BACON & BEER CLASSI C AT CI TIFI ELD

BEER & SPIRITS

Bacon & Beer Classic At Citi Field: Move over baseball: Make way for two other American classics as bacon and beer take center stage at the home of the New York Mets this summer. What could be more American than beer and bacon at the ball park? Cannonball Productions brings The Bacon And Beer Classic (baconand-beerclassic.com) to Citi Field in Flushing for a unique doubleheader on July 26. The brunch session runs from noon until 3 pm, followed by an evening session from 7 to 10 pm. Fans can attend one or both, but need a ticket for each session. VIP ticketholders will be admitted one hour earlier … yes, an extra hour of beer and bacon! This special event is part of a national series Bacon On A hosted by Major League Stick With Baseball stadiums. Fans Maple Glaze can get a taste of history as they walk through the stadium sampling craft beers and special bacon-inspired treats prepared by local chefs. There will also be live music, interactive games, and cooking demonstrations and beer schools where everyone – from expert to novice – will learn a thing or two about bacon and beer. “This certainly won’t be a run-of-themill experience for guests. The Bacon and Beer Classic brings together the best in local food, brews, and entertainment,” said Cannonball Productions and Bacon And Beer Classic founder Kate Levenstien. “Because New Yorkers are such die-hard sports fans and so knowledgeable about craft beer and gourmet food, we’re thrilled to be hosting our next event at Citi Field in July.” The starting lineup for New York’s event is strong, and continues to grow. Already, more than 80 area restaurants and breweries have signed on, with each brewery serving at least two of its most celebrated brews. Restaurant chefs are being challenged to prepare their most delectable bacon-inspired dishes. Attendees can expect to taste several bacon classics and bacon creations they’ve never seen (or tasted) before. To keep track of all the tasty treats, guests can download a mobile application that not only lets them vote for their favorites, but provides useful, interactive features for

use during the event. After each session, votes will be tabulated and awards presented to restaurants and breweries. Cannonball Productions ensures the experience is local by partnering with businesses and groups that provide the best the area has to offer, including D’Artagnan, a gourmet bacon provider. The event’s charity partner is Citymealson-Wheels (citymeals.org), which unites volunteers from the Greater New York City area. Citymeals-onWheels provides a continuous lifeline of nutritious food and human company to New York’s homebound elderly, last year delivering two million weekend, holiday and emergency meals to 18,000 frail and aged residents. The Bacon and Beer Classic is an all-inclusive event, with guests receiving a souvenir Bacon And Beer Classic cup. General admission tickets are $59; VIP experience tickets are available and provide access to a variety of exclusive privileges, including but not limited to: one hour-early entrance, access to VIP areas on the warning track and inside the dugouts, and exclusive brew tastings. Angelina Jolie: She’s Maleficent

When Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie got wind that a movie about Maleficent, her favorite Disney character, was going to be made, her interest was piqued. “I loved Maleficent when I was a little girl,” said Jolie. “I was afraid of her and I loved her. So, when I’d heard rumors that there might be a Maleficent movie, I asked around to find out what was going on. Then I got a call asking if I was interested and I said absolutely.” When Jolie read the script, she was moved by it and felt it was like uncovering a great mystery. “We all know the story of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and we all know Maleficent and what happened at the christening because we’ve all grown up with that,” said Jolie. “But what we’ve never known is, what happened before?” As to what audiences can expect from Disney’s most iconic villain this time around, Jolie said, “People will see that she’s the same wicked Maleficent. What I loved about the original Maleficent when I was little was that she had a wicked sense of fun. She enjoyed being evil and she reveled in it. She still gets to do that and she will satisfy, hopefully, the people that, like myself, are fans of the original. But you get to learn more about her and how she became evil.” Explaining how she approached playing Maleficent, Jolie related, “I wanted to make sure we didn’t lose her sense of wicked fun because I think it’s a very beautiful story. It’s kind of a different but

classic fairy tale and it has a lot of heart. We want to revel in that and that was very important for me as well as that she was somebody that was relatable.” Jolie admitted that Maleficent was one of the most difficult characters that she has ever played because “she represents all sides of what it is to be human, even though she is not.” “For me, the journey of playing her has been much heavier, much more emotional, and much more difficult an experience than I expected,” said Jolie. “There’s a part of me that plays big fun roles, but never this big. She’s slightly crazy, extremely vibrant, a little

They become best friends but as they grow up, the way they view the world changes and they have very different opinions. They both, at different times in the story, go very dark. They end up becoming enemies.” Maleficent can turn her raven Diaval, played by Sam Riley, into a man or any animal that suits her particular purpose. When Diaval is a man, he is Maleficent’s confidant and conscience. Explaining their relationship, Jolie says, “They have a very bizarre relationship. At first Maleficent’s quite controlling over him and then he tries to stand up to her and they bicker a lot. They’re like a weird married couple that watches Aurora as she grows up. Maleficent has a disdain for Aurora and everything that she represents and Diaval’s a little more nurturing.” When moviegoers sit in their seats to watch Maleficent, Jolie expects that they will have a great experience: “Everybody involved is hoping to bring audiences the feeling that we’ve respected the classic film and if they loved the classic, we’ve tried to bring them what they’ve remembered and loved about this story. Film Reviews

Action Aplenty

Transformers: Age Of Extinction Starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles, Jack Reynor Directed by Michael Bay Paramount Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Starring Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman Directed by Matt Reeves 20th Century Fox

Here we go again: Two more critic-proof action/ sci-fi mellers that teens will flock to regardless of their quality. And there’s absolutely no question of that: This edition of the Transformers epic (anyone remember the original toys that became the rather benign cartoons?), upon its release, earned a near record-low 17 percent “fresh” at Rotten Tomatoes, yet earned an incredible $301 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Even more newsworthy: It’s starting to look like this film will soon become the top-grossing movie in history in China. Maybe it’s because those going to the mallplexes there actually worked on making those toys – but, more than likely, Chinese audiences are relating to the film’s Chinese locations and actors. Apparently, the Chinese are as tasteless as we

are, because this nearly unwatchable two hours and 27 minutes (!) of sheer bombast is enough to give even Evertlasting Gobstopperfueled moppets a lousy headasche. We like action as much as the next neanderthal, but the noise and jangly crashes just ... never ... stop. It’s like paying 12 dollars to get locked inside of a noisy MRI machine, only with better-looking attendants. Old hands Kelsey Grammer and Stanley Tucci try their best; Mark Wahlberg is this generation’s Keanu Reeves, all “duh” and “wha...” However, sexy Nicola Peltz just explodes off the screen in her role replacing Megan Fox in the challenging role of Walking Sex. At least there’s something soft and real about this soon-to-be legendary stinker, box office tallies and the overrated Michael Bay be damned. Things fare much better with Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, as the re-envisioned series betters the original films by only about 50 miles. This is sci-fi with a brain, as this actually moving and intellectually riveting film is buoyed by a stellar cast (Oldman in full ape-hating mode, as always, is particuarly good) and some of the best special effects we can remember. The allegories here remain the same as the first film,

but action and battle sequences here are utterly breathtaking without being overdone. It’s sci-fi that manages to be life-affirming, sad, and thought-provoking, all at the same time. Not all sequels suck, and there will no doubt be more Planet Of The Apes thrillers in the years to come – and in a weak summer for film box office results, we’ll wager that this one will blow the tallies for Transformers right out of the water, China be damned. – Cody Bell

I

t is still hard to figure out what was so special about Team USA’s run in the 2014 World Cup. They won a grand total of one game and blew a 2-1 lead to Portugal with less than a minute to play, settling for a dispiriting tie. The World Cup knockout round began on the same day that The Fancy Food Show was taking place at The Javits Center. The Belgium food exhibitors showed great sportsmanship, as nearly every American they met was trash talking about how Team USA was going to whip the boys from Brussels. The Belgium contingent did not get offended, and seemed upbeat that Americans actually cared about the sport. Of course, Belgium had the last laugh, as they sent the Americans home from Brazil. There is little argument that the World Cup was great for businesses, as restaurants and bars were packed all over our area. Zumba Fitness, a company best known for workout apparel, created a line of Brazil soccer shirts to try to cash in on World Cup Fever. While more Americans watched and talked about soccer than ever before because of the 2014 World Cup, the two problems that plague the game became apparent: the lack of scoring and the fact that no one really knows how much time is left in regulation play. The referees should have the power to stop the clock so that the true remaining game time is never in dispute. Chaos always seems to be the natural order with the Brooklyn Nets, going back to the team’s days at

By Lloyd Carroll Bartolo the Nassau Coliseum Colon when then-owner

Roy Boe had to trade Julius Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers in order for his team to stay solvent. Back to the present, it’s easy to assume that former head coach Jason Kidd was clearly rankled when new New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher was given a five-year $25 million contract by the Knicks’ Phil Jackson, and also to fathom that Kidd believed that he was giving his labor cheaply by going into his second-year of a three-year $10 million contract. Rather than ask to have his contract renegotiated in light of what Fisher, who has no head coaching experience, was getting, it was reported by several news outlets that Kidd asked team owner Mikhail Prokhorov to put him in charge of Nets basketball operations. That would have meant that Nets general manager Billy King, the man who hired Kidd and stuck by him, would have been reporting to Kidd, and probably would have been dismissed by him. It’s to his immense credit that King took the high road at his July 1 press conference in East Rutherford when he thanked Kidd for doing a fine job in his one year as Nets coach and wishing him good luck in his new role as Milwaukee Bucks head coach, and did so without a trace of sarcasm or bitterness.

Longtime New York Mets fans lamented the recent death of former general manager Frank Cashen, the architect of the 1986 World Serieswinning team. It’s safe to say that Sandy Alderson will never be able to accomplish what Cashen did. I remember interviewing Cashen in late 1981 when I was writing for the NYU Grad School of Business Administration newspaper, The Opportunity. I was discussing the changing economics of the game as free agency was in its infancy. I asked Cashen about

South Region Rookie of the Year Connor Pickford on June 22 at the third annual PBA Reality Check Classic at Brunswick Harbour Lanes in Melbourne, Florida. Jones defeated Pickford in the title match, 246-238, to win $2,500 and his 11th PBA Regional title after Pickford – who qualified 16th for match play – raced into the top qualifying position for the stepladder finals earlier in the day by rolling a PBA South Region-record four 300 games (most 300s in one day and in a single tournament) and posting a 10-2 record during the 12-game match play competition. Jones defeated defending champion Sean Riccardi, 300-205, in the semifinal round match to advance to the title match. – PBA PBA Champions Challenge: Four champions in four unique areas of elite bowling competition – Professional Bowlers Association Regionals, PBA50 Tour, PBA Women and Teen Masters – will be crowned in a two-hour ESPN telecast from the PBA World Series of Bowling VI in Las Vegas this fall; PBA Commissioner Tom Clark announced the breaking news in late June. The new PBA Champion’s Challenge will culminate with the top stars of the PBA50 Tour, PBA Regional Tour, the new PBA Women’s Regional Tour, and the Teen Masters boys’ and girls’ division champions, all bowling in the four-match television show at the South Point Casino complex over the Nov. 1-2 weekend. Preliminary rounds in the PBA50, Women’s, and Regional competitions will be covered live on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. PBA World Series of Bowling VI will take place

beginning October 24 at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas. “The new PBA Champion’s Challenge telecast gives us an opportunity to showcase the diversity of competition the PBA provides,” Clark said. “It will focus attention on our senior players, the legion of players who compete in our extensive regional program, women bowlers who have had very few opportunities to bowl on national television over the past few years,

Tommy Jones and the future stars of bowling ... It will add another dimension to our already popular World Series of Bowling.” – Bill Vint, PBA

rock acts. Two years ago, REO Speedwagon played Citi Field; last year it was Foreigner. Last Saturday, Huey Lewis & The News regaled fans at Citi Field following the Mets game against the Miami Marlins. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Belmont Park used to routinely feature late afternoon concerts as a way of both creating new horse racing patrons as well as trying to ward off the competition from the Meadowlands Raceway across the Hudson River. For some dumb reason, NYRA stopped the concerts. Its new president, Chris Kay, promises to restore Belmont’s pop music tradition in 2015. Last month, Glenmorangie Scotch had one of its more prominent spokesmen, golf legend Sir Nick Faldo, give a clinic at Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers for both the media and some lucky members of the public. Faldo went over a lot of the basic mistakes that duffers make, such as the failure to follow through properly on their swing; put too much weight on their heels; and not take the club past their back foot enough. Major League Baseball has long been concerned about the diminishment of African-Americans playing the game. They may have more reason to

the big market Mets acquiring players who were in the last year of their contracts from smaller market teams who couldn’t afford to re-sign them: “It’s funny you should mention that. George Foster of the Reds is the kind of player who I would be interested in.” Sure enough, he traded for Foster a month later. I appreciated Cashen’s candor as well as his willingness to give a scoop to a young writer from a small outlet. Back to the depressing present: Barring a reversal of fortune in the win-loss column, the Mets should be sellers at the July 31 trade deadline. Pitcher Bartolo Colon, given a two-year, $20 million contract by Alderson during the off-season, has pitched better than expected and should interest contending teams. The problem is that the Mets would have to absorb some of that financial commitment to get back any kind of credible prospects. On a brighter Mets note, here’s some credit to the Mets’ promotions department for booking postgame concerts, particularly ones featuring classic

be concerned based on my conversation with Clemson forward K.J. McDaniels, taken by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft. McDaniels grew up in Mobile, Alabama, the home of such Mount Rushmore baseball players as Hank Aaron, Willie McCovey and Billy Williams, as well as former Mets stars Cleon Jones and Tommie Agee. When I asked McDaniels if he played baseball, he replied, “No, and none of my friends did either.” He then added that he never heard of any of the aforementioned players that I named – with the exception of Aaron, and that was probably only because a stadium and a street are named after him. As expected, forward JaKarr Sampson, who left St. John’s this spring after his sophomore year, was not selected in the 2014 NBA Draft. He will be playing for the 76ers NBA Summer League team, but that is the equivalent of when baseball teams extend non-roster invitations to longshot hopefuls as insurance in case of injury. Techno Beat As I sit here tired and falling asleep, I only have one thing in mind: you, the readers. And you should be proud and honored as I have chosen you over an extra hour or two worth of sleep tonight. I’m going to get straight into things and talk about a name that you might not be hearing too much of right now; and that is Rusko. The L.A. based king of bass music returns from a year-long slumber to fuck up dance music in a big way. Rusko’s new EP, “!”, is an introduction to a new era of sound exploration. “This is the first time I’ve ever released a record that’s not dubstep or drum and bass. It’s not house or techno either – I tried to create 5 fun tracks that fit into no genre, or maybe a whole new genre altogether… and be prepared, this is only volume 1.” This album is going to be all over the place, and I, for one, am very excited to hear where it takes us. I got to hear “Sunshower” and can say that it takes you on a chill type of journey that I can only hope that the other tracks will compliment nicely. If you want to grab the EP, be sure to check it out on July 29. On the longest day of the year, June 21st, a lineup of incredibly talented artists came to the IZOD and turned up for close to 6 hours. But, not only did they go hard, so did the entire crowd. In the paint. Ladies and gentlemen, I am talking about none other than Life In Color; and I will tell you that that is exactly what it was. Putting DVBBS, MAKJ, Chuckie, and Carnage on the same stage in the same night was equivalent to a mini festival. It had the feel of one at least. From the amount of people, the setting, the lighting, the visuals, every aspect was big. Carnage’s set had a definitely “festival” influence to it as it wasn’t as much trap as he normally would have played. However, I think I enjoyed this set the best for him; not only because of his song choice, but because of the quality of the performance. I’ve seen Carnage many times and watched his progress in terms of technical skills and he keeps getting better each time and, in my opinion, more deserving of obtaining a spot as one of the top DJs out there. If you missed out on LIC, don’t fret! There are plenty more events coming up this summer in the NYC area. Dannic will by stopping by Webster Hall on August 2 as part of Webster Hall’s “Brite Nites” series they hold every Saturday. That SAME night and the SAME venue, D!Rty Aud!O will be stopping by with Tincup to get real grimey in the basement of Webster for “Bassment Saturdays”. And if you really want it dirty (pun intended?), on August 16, Dotcom and Aylen will be at Webster Hall. So, hopefully I’ll see some of you out there at one of those shows. Pacha will also be throwing down in the next few weeks, both at

their club in NYC and at Governor’s Island. We’ve got 3LAU at the club venue on August 1 and have Thomas Gold set to tear down Governor’s Island on August 2. However, the event to highlight, mostly because I am biased and love them is the Adventure Club show at Governor’s Island on July 26. I literally can’t get enough of these guys. I think I’ve seen them at least 2-3 times in the last 3 months and can’t wait to see them again, as each time I see them, they get better. They are always constantly changing up their set, using new samples and one shots, and bringing a different vibe to the crowd. When I saw them last year at Governor’s Island, they had a chiller dubstep set whereas last month at Pacha, they had a dirty house and dubstep set. I’m not sure what to expect from them this time, but I know it will be good. Hopefully they have some banging opening acts to help out, and then it will be 8 hours of pure gold. As I had a gig this past Friday at the Zebra Club in Copiague, I needed to get some new songs in my set to throw down that people hadn’t heard before. And because I got to do that, you guys get to reap the benefits of it and hear some new shit I recently downloaded. The first one is a song you may have heard at one of Carnage’s shows before and may recognize it as the “Harry Potter” song. I know I’ve thought to myself, “Damn, I really wish they would release that song because I need to have it.” Well, lucky for all of us, they have released it. Combined with Alvaro, “The Underground” has that big, festival feel to it and although it isn’t anything technically spectacular, that’s never stopped me (or most people) from putting it on their iPod. Another name that’s been getting big recently is Caked Up, known for this dirty twerk remixes of popular songs. And this time, he’s done it again with his remix of “Most Pit” by Flosstradamus. This is definitely a jaw dropper and just makes you say “damn…”, stunned by his ability to take vocals and mash them up like that. I’m about to take a rather different turn than normal. And by that, I am about to recommend to deep house. I’ve never really listened to deep house before, but have found a new appreciation for it in certain settings, especially when there is a 30 minute mix released by Dillon Francis (well, in this case, DJ Hanzel). DJ Hanzel takes to BBC Radio and puts “only the deepest house” out on the internet for us to marvel at. If you’re hesitant, definitely take a listen. It’s pretty darn deep. Gotta run everyone, but make sure you hit me up at richiegtechno@gmail. com and shoot me any questions or comments and such. Keep raging my friends.

Lord Huron

Ted Nugent

The Paramount, Huntington July 21 at 8 PM • paramountny.com (631) 673-7300

There’s little question that Ted Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock & roll history as the ultimate guitar-shredding showman, selling more than 40 million albums, performing more than 6,400 high-octane concerts, and continuing to set attendance records at venues around the globe. He returns to Long Island with a vengeance – and our ears are still ringing from the interview he gave us last year: “Mellowed? I think not,” said Nugent. “If the 25-year-old Ted showed up in his loincloth tonight, I’d kick his skinny ass and eat the loincloth.” Clearly, Nugent isn’t one to shy away from controversy ... or delivering hot concerts.

The Space at Westbury July 17 at 8 PM thespaceatwestbury.com (800) 745-3000 Lord Huron is a musical and visual project created by Ben Schneider; originally a solo project, collaborators now include Mark Barry (percussion, vocals), Miguel Briseno (bass, percussion), and Tom Renaud (guitar, vocals). Years back in Lake Huron, Michigan, Schneider recorded the three songs that would comprise the Into the Sun EP. He released the EP online, and dispersed a small number of CDs complete with his own artwork. Lord Huron’s first live show was in August 2010; since then, they’ve become one of the hottest touring acts in the land. Now signed with IamSound Records, their Lonesome Dreams album has cemented their stardom. Added bonus: James Apollo opens.

James Taylor

Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre, Wantagh July 16 at 8 pm ticketmaster.com (516) 221-1000

Death, taxes ... James Taylor on a summer tour – he even sang about how his fans return to his annual shows in one of his own songs. Now a humble, wizened, and witty live performer, Taylor has assembled one of the best bands he’s ever hit the road with, and he never fails to perform the songs that made him famous: “You’ve Got A Friend,” “Fire And Rain,” “How Sweet It Is, “Your Smiling Face,” “You Can Close Your Eyes,” and too many more to list here. Here’s a nice open secret: If you log on to Taylor’s official website (jamestaylor.com), this legendary guitar master offers free guitar lessons for those who are interested in learning how to emulate his unique acoustic sound. How cool is that?

Deep soul with real heart – it’s a sound and style that’s eternal. Hamilton is one of this era’s most notable R&B singers and songwriters, able to capture raw emotion in a way that few of today’s artists can. His Comin’ From Where I’m From album (2003) cemented his stardom for good – and now he’s bringing a pair of fellow stars in Keke Wyatt (“Nothing In This World”) and Shaliek (his new album, Blood Sweat Tears, has just been released) to the famed theater in the round.

What a lineup for genre fans: South Shore Entertainment presents the legendary Lisa Lisa (“Can You Feel The Beat,” “I Wonder”), George LaMond (“Don’t Stop Believing”), Noel (“Silent Morning”), Nayobe (“Please Don’t Go”), Cyre (“Last Chance”), and music by DJ Impact playing the best of old school throughout what should be one hot evening.

18 • Good Times Magazine - July 15 - 28, 2014

You say you want metal? The kind that makes the hair stand up on your arms and makes old ladies cover their ears? This area band should be just the tonic. Perry Como/Michael Bublé fans, be forewarned: “Awake In the Fire set forth with sheer brutality to shred the faces off your skulls,” reports the band’s bio. Members of this hot band include Jonathan Buckley on vocals, Andrew Schmadtke on bass, Michael Altman on lead guitars, Kevin Riggio on rhythm guitars, and Daniel Reynolds on drums. Obviously with AITF, serious, take-no-prisoners rock is the deal.

Ryan Broshear

K.J. Farrell’s, Bellmore July 17 at 7 PM • kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925

This early show (scheduled for 7 pm) will give fans a rare opportunity to see a superstar on the rise in the intimate environs of Farrell’s, one of the area’s most popular venues. Broshear is about as hot as a young artist can get; this stop on his tour, supported by Roscoe Beer Company, will deliver a singer who was recently named one of the “top artists to watch in 2014” and a real, down-to-earth country music performer. He’s already shared stages with such luminaries as Merle Haggard, Diamond Rio, and other national artists. Learn more about this rising talent at ryanbroshear.com.

PERFORMANCE

Willie’s Way

On an unassuming Wednesday evening in New York City, Willie Nile prepared backstage for a show at Highline Ballroom. It was the band's first area appearance in quite some time. “I've learned a lot from New York City,” Nile explained. “On the streets here, there's rich, there's poor, and everything in between. For a writer, there's a lot of meat.” New York City is a lyrical and thematic constant throughout Nile's extensive discography, which has produced eight studio albums and four live records. As the doors open and the crowd shuffles in, one can feel the anticipation; although Nile and his band have played New York City countless times, the show still feels like a homecoming to both the artist and his fans. Jefferson Grizzard opened the show with a tight set of original roots rock. The band’s latest album, Learning How To Lie, features a song co-written by Nile and Grizzard, which pays tribute to Levon Helm. Shortly after the opening set, Nile took the stage along with Johnny Pisano, Matt Hogan, and Alex Alexander. Their presence

commanded the crowd’s attention from the first song, and didn't let it go for the duration of the evening.

to Nile's latest album. The show continued on in fine form with “Bleecker Street,” “This Is Our Time,” and “She's So Cold,” which Nile jokingly introduced as a “song he wrote for the Stones.” The first set was brought to a close with an energetic performance of “One Guitar,’ which left many in the crowd on their feet and obviously wanting more. The band returned on stage to thunderous applause, and paid tribute to Lou Reed with “Sweet Jane.” They wrapped up the evening with “House Of A Thousand Guitars” and “Little Light.” Even after delivering an electrifying evening of music, Nile remains focused on the next big thing. “I am currently working on two albums: a band album and a more piano based record,” he said. Nile’s plans are a testament to his prolific artistry that has produced so many memorable songs. “When a song comes to life, that means you've done your job,” said Nile. It may be a tough job, but Nile and his band proved they are up to the task. – Peter Mancini

Craving Strange A Life Exceptional Horian Records

Who: Craving Strange remains one of Long Island’s true success stories, traveling the country and scoring airplay and concert dates throughout the nation thanks to their somewhat old-school hard rock sound. Members of the Amityville-based group are Tommy Balls (bass), Jimmy G (vocals/guitars), Jimi Tassone (drums), and Matt Abate (guitar). The Artists & Their Sound: From this album’s one-sheet: “Who the F’ is Craving Strange? A rock

and roll band from Amityville, NY, mixing the aggressiveness of bands like Guns ‘N Roses with the pop and melodic sense of Foo Fighters? Is it the band with the hilarious video of their remakes of Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ and ridiculous appearance on ‘Secret Wedding’ on TLC? Maybe they’re the band that puts on infectious, energetic live shows, impossible not to get swept up in till you’re singing along and havng as good a time as they are.” The Songs: “Dirty Rock,” “Your Last Day Alive,” “Here & Gone,” “A Life Exceptional,” “Do You Remember,” “Break The Skin,” “More Than Myself,” “Denial,” “Incomplete,” “Would You Do The Same,” “Angeline,” “Breathe,” “Your Last Day Alive (Clean).” To Learn More About The Artists: This album is available everywhere music is sold. If you have true Punk’ At The Space human spirit, you can’t fit into any genre, nationality or culture. To be a true citizen of the world, you can only be an ultimate outsider.” Hutz chose Pura Vida Conspiracy as the title because it represents everything the band has been moving toward since they first formed over a decade ago. “We’re not a whimsical band with a

Vermont, narrowing it down to the most compelling tunes for the album. The arrangements were done on the fly, with the musicians contributing ideas from their own areas of expertise. “Our sound comes from being a group of polyamorous musicians. The style comes from musicians born and raised in various elements, like (bass player) Thomas Gobena’s Ethiopian meters and (Russian violinist) Sergey Ryabtsev and (folkloric Russian accordion player) Yuri Lemeshev’s palette of colors. Everyone does their own thing to keep the train moving.” Hutz founded Gogol Bordello in New York

Hutz, explaining the philosophy behind that album, Pura Vida Conspiracy. Like everything they’ve ever done, this outing is an uncategorizable blend of international influences, anchored by the gypsy rhythms Hutz grew up with in Ukraine. “Most people are looking for a box to put stuff in,” said Hutz. “I try to avoid it. The message of this record is the quest for self-knowledge beyond borders and nationalities. Every culture is a useful mask, but it is just a mask. To get to know your actual human self, you have to get behind all the masks. With all the time I’ve spent in Latin

whimsical message, and some languages offer things that others don’t. As I made my way through Spanish, the phrase ‘pura vida’ – pure life – struck me. In Spanish, ‘pura vida’ has the gusto that true life should have, as opposed to words in English, French, or Russian. It sums up my need of joining fragmented parts and pieces to create a worldwide consciousness. It’s what we’ve had in mind since the first song on the first Gogol Bordello album.” The band did pre-production on 30 songs at studios in Mexico, Paraguay, and Burlington,

City in 1999, after leaving Ukraine in the aftermath of Chernobyl. In keeping with his vision of creating an international groove, he recruited bassist Thomas Gobena, from Ethiopia, Russian violinist Sergey Ryabtsev from Moscow and percussionist Pedro Erazo-Segovia from Ecuador. “When I stayed in Kiev for months, people thought it was my victory lap back home,” said Hutz. “When I told them I was leaving, they were disappointed that I didn’t want to be the rock guy on Ukraine TV. That trip back home made me certain of my mission as an ultimate outsider.”

Dog Society

COMEDY Keenan Ivory Wayans

They’ve Got It Made ‘In The Shade’

Who: Rock band Dog Society has returned in a big way after taking a hiatus and forging its own new hard-rocking credo; its new album, In The Shade, was recently released. The Artists & Their Sound: From their official bio: “Coming full circle

after their major label debut Test Your Own Eyes (East-West/ Atlantic Records) and their critically acclaimed 2013 release, Emerge, the renowned pop rock collective, Dog Society, has created an album that continues to fulfill their promise as a great American rock band. “The foursome; Brian Schnaak, Bruce Erik Brauer, Rich Guerzon, and Joe Ranieri, showcase their prowess in their newest studio album. The record traverses many styles, showcasing solid influences ... the 12 dynamic songs were recorded at FLUX studio in New York City’s East Village in January 2014. The plan was to track an EP, but the vibe was so good the band members spontaneously recorded enough material to flesh out a longer listening experience while calling in a few new additional players to add to their musical pallet. Chris Anderson’s chaotic trumpet playing and Breakdown Brass, a six-piece brass band from

Brooklyn, can be heard on the single ‘Our Own Parade.’ “The Dog Society name was taken from the Hidatsa Indian Tribes of Dog Society Dancers, who played a dominant role in the Cheyenne resistance to American expansion. A fitting name for a group of New York rock rebels that have cast off the major label machine, held true to their camaraderie, and succeeded in coming into their own as a band through their unique, individual journeys. “The fluid mix of psychedelic rock and classic pop sensibility from such seasoned musicians is a testament to their long collaborative friendship and growth as songwriters. It is obvious that the turbulent and restless days that fueled their inception have given way to a period of free-flowing creativity that is in a sense, made in the shade.” To Learn More About the Artists: Log on to dogsociety.tv or dogsociety.bandcamp.com/album/ in-the-shade. Wild Wayans In Westbury: One of the msot successful comedic familes of all time – Damon, Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn Wayans – star in “The Wayans Brothers Live” at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Saturday, July 19 at 8 pm. Damon For more information, Wayans visit thetheatreatwestbury.com. The Wayans family, by this point, must rank with legends such as The Marx Brothers as the most successful comedy siblings ever. Damon, Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn are not only known for their appearances in movies, standup comedy, and television shows, but also for their work as writers, directors,

Shawn & Marlon Wayans

and producers. It was Keenen Ivory Wayans who was the first to achieve national prominence by successfully creating, launching, and hosting the landmark 1990s black-oriented comedy satire for Fox, In Living Color. The show, in turn, ignited the careers of his bothers Damon (who was also a creator and writer on the show), Shawn, and Marlon, as well as their sister, Kim. Collectively, the brothers have brought entertainment to millions of fans throughout the years. The first feature film Keenen directed, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988), starred brothers Damon and Shawn. Shawn co-wrote and starred in the hit Don’t Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice in The Hood (1996) with brother Marlon. A massive hit film, Scary Movie (2000) was co-written by Shawn and Marlon and directed by Keenen, and is one of the most successful feature films ever directed by an African-American. Keenen, Shawn, and Marlon

co-wrote the film White Chicks (2004), which Shawn and Marlon also starred in. The family also created Thugaboo and the subsequent Boo Crew animated specials for Nickelodeon, which premiered in 2006. The Wayans also wrote, directed and voiced the series, which took a humorous look at the trials and tribulations of nine inner city kids. Damon Wayans also known for his role on the now-classic sitcom My Wife And Kids (which ran from 2001 through 2005), a show he co-created, produced, and wrote. Marlon Wayans is the host of the new show, Funniest Wins (TBS), which premieired recently. Keenen Ivory Wayons is a celebrity judge on this season’s edition of Last Comic Standing (NBC), the Emmy Awardnominated summer series. And, yes: All four brothers will perform in Westbury.

CLASSIC ROCK

The Babys

Hey, Babys, What’s-a Happenin’: With a string of 70s classic rock radio hits including “Isn’t It Time,” “Every Time I Think of You,” “Head First,” “Back on My Feet Again,” “Midnight Rendezvous” and “Turn Snd Walk Away,” The Babys certainly made their mark – and now, against all odds, it’s comeback time. After a three-decade absence, The Babys have reformed with original lead guitarist Wally Stocker and drummer Tony Brock to release a new album, I’ll Have Some of That, slated for release on June 24, and a new single, “I See You There,” available now on iTunes. “The whole premise is to keep The Babys alive and have a good time doing it,” said Stocker about the reformed group, which also includes new recruits in lead vocalist/bassist John Bisaha and veteran guitarist Joey Sykes. The band is joined in concert by keyboardist Francesco Saglietti and “The Babettes.” Brock raves about the new members of the group: “John Bisaha is an incredible singer. When we held auditions, we had singers lined up around the block to join the band and

U rriiaahh H eeeepp

John was head and shoulders above the rest.” Stocker is equally enthused about his new axe mate: “Joey Sykes adds a whole new dimension to the band and has a style that works well in tandem with me.” Former members John Waite, Jonathan Cain, and Ricky Phillips have all given their blessings to the newest incarnation of the band. Waite

Favorites & Legends Rock On continues on as a solo act, while Cain is now a member of Journey, having penned a string of hit singles including “Don’t Stop Believing,” the most downloaded song in history. Phillips is the longtime bass player for Styx. “In recording this new album, we discussed the fact that the songs had to have the flavor of what we were known for,” said Stocker. “It was just a magical process,” added Brock. “By the time we finished, I knew we had the goods.” A Heep Of Rock: Uriah Heep, one of the pivotal hard rock groups to emerge from England in the late 1960s, returns with Outsider, its 24th studio album and the first since 2011’s Into The Wild. “We are very proud of our history,” said founder/guitarist Mick Box, “but it is equally important to keep producing new material. This new album, Outsider, is very much a rock album in true ‘Heep’ style. It shows that we still have the same passion and energy for our music that we have always had.” The record, which was produced by Mike Paxman (Asia, Status Quo), introduces bassist Dave Rimmer, who joined the band last summer after the untimely death of longtime member Trevor Bolder. Said Box of his late friend, Bolder: “We lost a world-class bass player, singer, songwriter, and friend. While Trevor was ill, he wanted us to continue working, so we used a bass player called Dave Rimmer, who Trevor approved of. It was only natural that Dave carried on with the band.”

After major tours of Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, and South America, upon the release of Outsider Uriah Heep will launch a world tour that will take in many continents as the band promotes the new album to an international audience. For all things Uriah Heep, visit uriah-heep.com.

Print Isn't Dead: Entertainment Weekly's early June edition featuring a stunning photo of a bikini-clad Jessica Alba – complete with an even more revealing pictorial and article – was by all accounts a huge newsstand Kennedy smash and generated Summers more online chatter than any magazine cover in memory… Conversely, Ladies Home Journal, one of the most popular magazines in America for much of its 131 years in print, quietly ceased publishing in mid-June. There's talk that LHJ may come back for quarterly “special issues ” … Following this year's WrestleMania, there has been much going on in WWE, and not all of it has to do with former champion Daniel Bryan's neck injury, which kept him out of action: The company recently parted ways with many stars, including former manager, referee, and figurehead general manager Teddy Long, hulking Brodus Clay, little-used Drew McIntyre (the former real-life flame of actress/wrestler Taryn Terrell), and others – and reportedly, their head writer as well. By all accounts, WWE is in cost-cutting mode after subscriptions to its WWE Network were disappointing and their new deal with NBC/Universal didn't Lori Thomas bring in the fees originally surmised, causing stock prices to plummet … Statuesque blonde Kennedy Summers, a longtime international model at the age of 27, was named the 2014 Playboy Playmate of the Year; she graced the June cover. – Bob Smith

LI's Queen Steps Down: The founder and executive director of the Miss Long Island pageant will officially pass her reigns to the co-directors of Ultimate Crown Productions, Inc. in front of a live audience at the annual Long Island pageant competition on August 10 at The Patchogue Theatre. Lori Thomas of Smithtown, a homegrown beauty queen herself, founded the Miss Long Island Pageant eight years ago to create a forum to bring together some of Long Island's most beautiful and influential young leaders dedicated to a myriad of community endeavors. Since then, she has crowned 14 Long Island queens. Each year under her direction, a Long Island queen has either placed in the Top 20 or higher in Donald Trump's New York USA State finals competition, or outright won the New York crown including backto-back wins for two of her Long

Island Teens in 2012 and 2013. "This truly has been an incredible journey," said Thomas. "I am humbled when I reflect on all the major accomplishments and the impact that not only the Long Island pageant queens have had on our community, but also every single young woman who has participated in our system over the years. They have dedicated themselves to making Long Island a better place for all of us, and I couldn't be more proud of their service." RHYTHM TRACKING

Sorry Sales: The mid-year sales report from Soundscan is not good news for labels or artists. Sales are way down, while streaming takes the lead. We knew this was coming: Why buy an album that you like when, for nine bucks, you can stream that album and every other album on the Billboard chart whenever and wherever you want – as well as classic tracks from every decade. It’s a win/win for the consumer, as the real collectors (like me)both young and old inherit the sales chart and have a greater say in what that chart looks like. That part is the part I actually like. Case in point: Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Since the totally fab film version of Jersey Boys hit multiplexes, both the film soundtrack and the best version of the Greatest Hits Of The Four Seasons CD and download albums have hogged the top two spots on the Amazon sales chart. Those of us who actually vote with our dollars have a better chance than ever to see our music choices topping the charts again, as if it was 1964 instead of 2014. I was pleased to see re-entries of greatest hits collections of solo Diana Ross, as well as Diana Ross & The Supremes, popping up on the chart as well, while Ross storms North America with a sold-out tour and the energy level of a kid in a van going from state to state to become famous ... the difference being that Ross is 70 years old. She certainly didn’t look or sound 70 when I saw her a few weeks ago at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden (the old

Felt Forum). She looked amazing, her voice sounds more vibrant than ever (although a slightly lower register which I’m sure is a result of age), and the packed house was on its feet from start to finish. It was a“greatest hits” show, reflecting her Supremes days and her solo career, and one can only hope that this was recorded or video-captured for a live album/DVD release. The performance, and the artist, were just stunning. Richie Rich: Like Ross, Lionel Richie is most likely also getting an uptick from the national success of Motown: The Musical, which features both artists as characters in the play, as well as their music. Richie was awarded the Lifetime Award during the recent BET annual program, and he, too, was in fine voice and spirit, and also is also touring the country, playing to sold-out crowds wherever he appears. After some of the hottest current talents, such as John Legend, performed Richie classics, Richie took the stage and nailed it, as Motown artists were trained and groomed to do. It is very satisfying to see these decades-spanning stars still doing their thing so successfully – including, amazingly, Four Seasons lead singer, Frankie Valli, who is touring with a two-hour solo show ... and he’s 80 years old! He makes Miss Ross look like a teenybopper in comparison. God bless these amazing stars

that so many of us grew up with. Yes, kids, you can make a lifelong career out of the music business – just stay off the hard stuff, if you know what I mean.
