2012, racking up an incredible 93 million views, and she is now selling out tour dates across Europe, America, Russia and Asia. Her selfreleased debut album has sold more than 320,000 copies in the U.S., and is certified-platinum in Germany, where she recently won the Echo Award for Best Crossover Artist. This summer,

Lindsey will complete a 44 city North American tour from May to July – with one of the performances being at The Space at Westbury.

Overall, Stirling is a classically trained violinist from Gilbert, Arizona, who has entered a futuristic world of big beats and animation – imagine Vanessa Mae leaping through the pages of a Manga comic with Skrillex in hot pursuit. This really happened: It is hard to believe that Piers Morgan told Lindsey Stirling the world had no place for a dancing dubstep violinist. But being voted off 2010’s “America’s Got Talent” at the quarterfinals turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her. Rejection simply strengthened Stirling’s resolve to be herself: “The same reasons I was told I wouldn’t succeed are the reasons people travel hundreds of miles to see me now,” she laughs. “Because it’s different. Because it’s something you haven’t seen before...” Stirling’s debut album features 12 original tracks, including viral smashes “Crystallize,” “Shadows,” and “Electric Daisy Violin.” She has created a new musical world where the romance of Celtic folk music and modern classical meet the infectious energy of dance and electronica. On stage, Stirling moves with the grace of a ballerina but works the crowd into a frenzy, “dropping the beat” like a strange, electro-pastoral rave fairy.

Frankly, this year’s Turtles tour sounds better than ever, mainly because it’s likely to rock more with the inclusion of Farner (Grand Funk) and Negron (Three Dog Night). The ultra-poppy Lewis and his bunch seem a little misplaced here given the hard-driving Farner and Rider are also on the bill, but the always amiable Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan – the irrepressible Flo & Eddie – will certainly insure a good, wacky time enjoyed by all.

Folds, as unique and quirky an artist ever to hit the Billboard 200, seems intent on forging a new path for his music these days. Although he toured with Ben Folds Five last year as part of a package tour, this time out he’s a solo artist, and the raves have come fast and furious as the veteran singer/songwriter seems less introspective and a lot more outgoing these days. Perhaps that’s because he’s been romantically linked with the gorgeous actress and fellow singer/songwriter Alicia Witt in the tabloids, but we surmise he’s simply maturing as both an artist and a performer.

Most artists stick to one or two genres at most, but he spans every one that he can. It would be too much to post all of the songs I’ve downloaded from his Facebook (around 35), but you should definitely check out Benasis on Facebook as soon as you finish reading this. It will be worth the time, I promise. Now, staying on the topic of twerk, I’ve recently downloaded a Tropkillaz song that is absolutely incredible.

The tour stops at The Beacon Theater on June 21; a second date has been added by popular demand (tickets via ticketmaster.com). “Move: Live On Tour” will be a complete stage production with sets, costumes, and a cast of professional dancers, with the Houghs headlining in solo, duet, and group performances in styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa and hip-hop, and everything in between. “No matter where we go in the world, the question we hear most from people is ‘when are you going to do something together?’” said Julianne Hough, who has graduated from her appearances on “Dancing With The Stars” to become an A-list film star. “We feel that everything we’ve done up to this point has led us to creating this show, and we can’t wait to share it with our fans.” The “Dancing With the Stars” champions conceived the show, which they are staging with Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo (Nappytabs), best

Mets relief pitcher Carlos Torres sympathized with Jackson: “It’s not easy to throw a pitch from a major league mound to home plate if you haven’t done it. I have seen many professional athletes badly bounce their throws to the catcher.” Media critics love to take aim at the New York Yankees radio team of John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman for a multitude of reasons, but I have always admired their chemistry as well as their desire to appeal to listeners who are neither stat geeks nor diehard team rooters. A good example of Sterling and John Waldman at the top of their game Sterling was a couple of weeks ago as the Yankees were getting soundly beaten by the Minnesota Twins, when Sterling suddenly started getting peeved. “I have been broadcasting baseball games for a long time, Suzyn, but for the life of me I can never understand why fans do the wave,” he steamed. “It’s a way of relieving the boredom, John,” Suzyn replied. “Standing up and throwing my hands up in the air every few seconds wouldn’t relieve my boredom!” Sterling retorted. Williamsport, Pennsylvania may have the Little League World Series, but the National Youth Baseball Championships will be taking place in Yaphank during the first two weekends in August. The NYBC differs from the Little League in that it features teams of 12 year-olds that travel around the country to compete. It also incorporates all major league rules, such as stealing bases. Catcher Travis d’Arnaud was a key (along with Noah Syndergaard) in the R.A. Dickey trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, and I have faith in his abilities. What I don’t get is why the Mets didn’t ease him into the job by letting his understudy,

Anthony Recker, get more playing time before d’Arnaud was sent to AAA. Recker has shown that he can call a great game; he blocks pitches in the dirt, and is no slouch at the plate, particularly in clutch situations. If that weren’t enough, Anthony is personable and possesses matinee idol looks. Sports is part of the entertainment industry, and he is certainly a player that the Mets can market. Willie Randolph has published an autobiography, The Yankee Way (It Books). It’s a fun read as Willie recalls the enmity between Graig Nettles and Reggie Jackson, the nuttiness of his former Pirates teammate, Dock Ellis, and his close relationships with Joe Torre and Don Mattingly. What is disappointing is that he devotes just a flimsy chapter to his tenure as Mets manager, and provides little about what led to his dismissal. The Philadelphia Phillies have always had great giveaway days. They may have outdone themselves on Father’s Day, when they gave out fedoras to all the guys in attendance.

Darryl’s Day: Classy Darryl Freeman waited five years to win an LIGBT trophy. His $1,000 victory came at AMF Garden City on June 1 as he defeated two other LIGBT champions with a great performance. Freeman, who resides in Forest Hills, shot a 223 to defeat second place finisher and threetime champion Dexter Sapp of Valley Stream by eight pins. Sapp shot a 215 to earn $500, while third place finisher Dave Martorella of Meriden, CT earned $300 with a 201. The AMF Garden City tournament drew a crowd of 117 entries, advanced 20 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,930. Kegel’s 39-foot Winding Road pattern was used; scoring was on the moderate side (a 680 cut at 1 pm, and 698 at 3 pm). LIGBT’s next tournament is a two-squad (1 pm and 3 pm) handicap event at AMF East Meadow on Sunday, June 22; top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000 and $500. Film Reviews

A Million Ways To Die In The West

Starring Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson Written, produced, and directed by Seth MacFarlane Universal Pictures

For baby boomers and their parents, westerns were an entertainment staple. Gary Cooper became a film icon playing the good guy sheriff who said little, but always defeated the villains. Roy Rogers and Gene Autry delighted both kids and adults with their short films, and even their respective horses, Trigger and Champion, were household names. Two of the longest running television shows of all time were “Bonanza” and “Gunsmoke.” However, it has been a long time since westerns have been part of mainstream entertainment. Clint Eastwood tried his best to keep the genre going with the critically acclaimed Pale Rider (1985) and the Academy Award-winning Unforgiven (1992). So did Kevin Costner with another Academy Award winner, 1990’s Dances With Wolves. Nonetheless those are the few notable westerns in recent memory. Humorist Seth MacFarlane of “Family Guy” fame obviously has a soft spot for the western as he applies his offbeat, frequently raunchy, humor in this new film. This marks his followup to 2012’s Ted – but unlike that hit, where MacFarlane provided the voice for an animated teddy bear, MacFarlane is front and center portraying violence-averse sheep farmer Albert Stark, who is trying to eke out a living in fictitious frontier town, Old Stump, Arizona, in 1882. Although the film is set in the 19th Century,

MacFarlane provides a 21st Century perspective to his character. Rather than romanticize the west, his character complains from the beginning of the film: “Life in the west stinks. Who is not you is trying to kill you.” MacFarlane has a field day spoofing western clichés here, from barroom brawls to elaborate square dances to high noon duels over petty matters to corny county fairs to the way Native Americans have been portrayed as savages who enjoyed scalping settlers. In a nice touch, MacFarlane employs arguably the well-known Cherokee actor, Wes Studi, to portray Chief Cochise. In their lengthy scene together it’s clear that MacFarlane makes it clear that Native Americans got the short end of the stick for years from both historians and Hollywood. Even though he serves as his own star of a movie that he wrote, produced, and directed, MacFarlane is generous in giving screen time to the many big names in the cast. Neeson, who generally plays the action hero in films, gleefully plays sadistic villain Clinch Leatherwood, who tells his victims: “I am going to count to three!” and

Film Reviews 22 Jump Street Starring Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller Columbia Pictures

The 2012 cinematic reboot of “21 Jump Street,” which along with “Married With Children” and Beverly Hills 90210” helped establish the Fox television network back in the late 1980s, was one of the better theatrical film surprises that year. Even if you had never watched the show about undercover high school cops, you could easily enjoy the witty spoof that combined humor, fast-paced action, and surprising cameos. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill were great as a mismatched team of the handsome jock and the self-aware shlub who together knock off bad guys and drive their superiors at the police department crazy. As per longstanding custom with any film that does decent box office business, a sequel was commissioned and the result is 22 Jump Street. With the exception of Godfather II and perhaps a few other films, the law of diminishing marginal returns quickly kicks in for sequels both in terms of film quality and box office receipts. The filmmakers and the cast knew this coming, in and they let us in on the joke both at the beginning of the film where Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman at his deadpan best) informs Officers Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) that their next assignment will be exactly the same as the last one, even though it sounds slightly different and how it will ultimately

be a disappointing experience. Clearly, they are trying to knock down the mythical audience wall, and they are, at least, successful in that endeavor. It’s crystal clear at the end of the film that there will not be any more Jump Street installments, as the cast has fun spoofing predictable sequel plotlines as the credits roll. As expected, there are the now-standard crowd-pleasing cameos. The problem with this film is that everyone involved seemingly has so much fun with the conceit of how sequels disappoint. They tend to be such lazy forms of entertainment that it does become a self-fulfilling prophecy; it’s easy to get the feeling that the screenwriters and producers made up scenes haphazardly as the film goes along, instead of having a clear vision from the

then fires his bullet on two (The Clinch character is a tribute to Lee Marvin’s Liberty Vallance from the 1962 film The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance). Clinch’s wife is Anna (Theron), not only beautiful but is also a crack shot. While Clinch is looking for gold in the Arizona Territory, Anna arrives in Old Stump, where she meets Albert, the polar opposite of Clinch in terms of temperament and shooting skills. Adding to the supporting cast are Sarah Silverman as the town’s most successful lady of the evening, Ruth, and Giovanni Ribisi as her virtuous boyfriend, Edward. The joke is that even though sex is Ruth’s business, the pair have not had premarital relations because they consider themselves good Christians. Amanda Seyfried is Louise, an object of Albert’s affections who is icy and aloof, and enjoys humiliating Albert after she dumps him. The welcome Neil Patrick Harris plays wealthy and foppish Foy; MacFarlane wisely gives Harris a musicial number. A Million Ways To Die In The West is a fast-moving two-hour film that will have you laughing out loud even as you leave the theater. For those who are not familiar with MacFarlane’s humor, you should be warned that there are a ton of bathroom jokes, lots of foul language, and some violent depictions that go well beyond what you would see in a Three Stooges short – in short, this is certainly not a family film. – Lloyd Carroll

start. The basic plot gist is that Jenko and Schmidt are now working undercover at a college as they try to figure out who is supplying the campus with an Ecstacy-like drug cleverly named Whyphy. Jenko, who got the short end of the stick when he had to re-enter high school in the original film, gets to blossom as a big man on campus here as he becomes a star on the football team. Schmidt, however, surprised to discover that he was part of the “in crowd” during his second go-round in high school, has it rougher in what would appear to be a natural milieu for him: college. Schmidt does meet an attractive art student, Maya (Amber Stevens, the daughter of radio personality Shadoe Stevens) at a Slam Poetry night at the college coffee house. Against all logic, she takes a liking to him. While there are occasional laughs throughout the body of the film, they seem to be an afterthought, as scenes drag badly; time is taken up by elongated chase scenes that will bring joy only to stuntman fans. The worst time-wasting offense is when the guys go to Mexico (in reality it’s San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Condado Beach) for the predictable spring break bacchanalia final scenes. It’s hard to blame the filmmakers for having a little Caribbean fun on Sony Pictures’ dime. Just about the only break from the monotony prior to the end credits is when Ice Cube, playing Captain Dickson, is on screen and goes into his angry dude routine. Few performers can act enraged yet whip out one funny line after another the way Cube can. Despite his efforts, don’t jump through hoops to see this one. – Lloyd Carroll

CHER DEFIES THE ODDS

While Mariah Carey never really went away, her return to the top of the Billboard charts has brought her more headlines and perhaps even more fame than she has already enjoyed during her legendary career. Carey isn’t the only legend returning to recording and touring after being Cher away for quite awhile: Cher is back. Absolutely ageless, this 1960s icon has kept her career going in various phases for more than five decades without missing a beat. She’s still in demand, as well; her “D2K Tour 2014” will stop at Madison Square Garden on September 19 and 20, at at Nassau Coliseum on September 22. She won’t be alone, either: None other than Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo will serve as her special guests. Amazing. Pat Benatar

Mariah Carey Pop’s Ultimate Diva Ushers In Summer

T

he multi-platinum global superstar Mariah Carey — Huntington, Long Island’s biggest gift to the pop world — has once again exploded onto the charts with her new album, Me, I Am Mariah ... The Elusive Chanteuse. The new disc, which features some of the most spectacular cover art of the beautiful singer’s career (pictured here), spawned two major hits even before it broke into the marketplace in late May: “You’re Mine (Eternal),” the initial single that Carey wrote and produced with hitmaker Rodney Jerkins that was this year’s official Valentine’s Day smash, as well as “Thirsty,” the current single that’s made headlines not only for dominating the iTunes charts, but for once again making this music legend the most talked-about female star on the current charts. As usual, Carey is about much more than simply making hits: Mariah continues her philanthropic efforts and opens her heart and home by partnering with Prizeo to offer

Carey traveled to Puerto Rico’s El Yungue National Rain Forest to film her video for “You’re Mine (Eternal),” and to experience firsthand the soaring natural beauty of this environmental wonder. She sought to further highlight the need to protect and preserve our planet’s natural resources and to raise awareness so our future generations will be able to enjoy the same. The new album Me, I Am Mariah … The Eternal Chanteuse has been released in at least three different versions, including one that’s exclusive to Target stores. unprecedented resumé: She is the best-selling female artist of all time, with more than 200 million albums sold to date and a record 18 Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles (17 self-penned), more than any solo artist in history. With her distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting, and producing talent, Carey is the template of the modern pop icon. She pioneered the latest trend of integrating different genres of musical collaboration now seen so often in pop music. As a singer, songwriter, and producer, she has been recognized with countless accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards, 21 American Music Awards, Billboard’s “Artist of the Decade” Award, the World Music Award for “World’s Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium,” and BMI’s “Icon Award” for her outstanding achievements in songwriting, to name a few.

Rhett Miller and his merry crew are back in a big way. As the title implies, this record is marked by a wry punk attitude and ends up being the band's most rocking effort since the classic Too Far To Care. The epic opening track, "Longer Than You've Been Alive," sees Miller tear down the fourth wall as he ruminates on the last 20 years of life on the road: “Mountains of weed, a couple of pills, but never the hard stuff/that s*** kills.” Salim Nourallah returns as producer and The Replacements' Tommy Stinson makes a guest appearance, and the result is an album that is great the whole way through. This is a party record –

This followup to band's excellent debut, Birds Fly South, does not disappoint. Its sound, honed to a fine point by producer Jim Scott (Wilco, Son Volt), features their hallmark incredible harmonies hat simultaneously recall the glory days of The Jayhawks and Fleetwood Mac. The songs here deal with more political and personal topics; the title track is inspired by Senator Wendy Davis' historic filibuster. Highlights include the Westerberg-inspired shuffle of "Closer To You," "If I Wanted To," and "Time Is Tender," which recalls the beautiful road-worn ballads of Little Feat and The Band. American music is alive and well, and The Mastersons are bearing the torch. – Peter Mancini

has been download gold since its April release, with the bulk of the attention going to its new-age hybrids such as the merging of Missy Elliot and The Black Keys on “Get Your Freak On/Keep Me” and star turns by Icona Pop (“All Night”), Ke$ha (“Die Young”), and Fergie (“London Bridge”) – and it’s not half as embarassing as having your guests see Now That’s What I Call Music! #24,558 in your CD collection when they come over to watch sports/play cards/do yoga/start the swingers’ party. – Bob Smith Andy Williams The Essential Columbia/Legacy

This double-CD compilation is an excellent opportunity to take stock of Williams’ talents. There is a tendency to overlook Williams because he was more in the league of Jack Jones rather than stratospheric levels of Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett – but Williams and Jones battled it out on the pop charts in the fall of 1964 with renditions of Henry Mancini’s “Dear Heart.” Williams may be synonymous with easy listening music, but his supple tenor voice was both powerful and full of range, exemplified by “Born Free,” “Love Story,” and “Love Theme From The Godfather (Speak Softly Love).” – Lloyd Carroll

Off The Road K.J. Farrell’s, Bellmore June 27 at 10 PM kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925

The name of Off The Road couldn’t be more appropriate: These are seasoned musicians with national cred, doing what they do best in-between major artist tours. The band consists of bassist Greg Smith, who has played with so many nationally touring artists that we couldn’t possibly list them all here (among them are Rainbow, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper), drummer Chuck Burgi (Billy Joel, Meatloaf, Rainbow), and guitarists Phil Varca (The Slamjammers) and John Cannavo. Also: Performing at 7 pm at Farrell’s is noted area guitarist John Judd.

Not only does this Project inexpensive multi-act show feature some of the hottest young names in local rock at the moment, but it’s completely accessible for everyone from teens to grizzled classic rockers: This Jenna is a show for ages 16 (that’s Rose not a typo) and up. It’s only $10 in advance (ticketweb.com), and features not only the rocking Montauk Project (fresh off the release of their stellar new Belly Of The Beast disc – and who are under consideration for this year’s Van’s Warped Tour), the groovin’ Funknasty, and the tuneful Von Voight, but also beautiful young singer supreme Jenna Rose, who is being pegged by many industry insiders as a coming pop star.

Chris Fury LI’s Fiery New Guitar Sensation

Who: Chris Fury is a Long Island-based progressive rock guitarist who incorporates virtually all music styles into both his playing and original songs, including jazz, blues, funk, rock, R&B, fusion, and very other facet under the sun. A deft soloist and seasoned live performer, Fury recently took part in an official release party for his new album, From Darkness, at Revolution in Amityvile. He’ll take part in a tour in the coming months in support of the new disc. The Artist & His Sound: From his bio: “Chris Fury speaks, lives, and breathes music — all through the guitar. Born in Long Island, a breeding ground for instrumental rock guitar virtuosos such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and John Petrucci, Fury brings a refreshing sound to the genre. Fronting his own instrumental rock guitar band, The Chris Fury Trio, his music is an eclectic taste of progressive rock, fusion, blues, and jazz elements with the guitar in the forefront. “Based in Brooklyn, Fury’s band features bassist Ian Underwood, a Berklee College Of Music graduate, and Chris Markwood, a reputable Los Angeles session musician. Performing Chris’s originals as well as ambitious cover tunes such as Eric Johnson’s ‘Cliffs Of Dover’ and Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Little Wing,’ The Chris Fury Trio performs at a high level of technicality few musicians reach ... Chris is developing a unique voice on the guitar. His sound reflects the grace and funk of John Fruciante of The Red Hot Chili Peppers combined with the technique and virtuosity of Joe Satriani

RHYTHM TRACKING Brit Invasion: It was 50 years ago … oh, dear. I just watched A Hard Day’s Night starring The Beatles on TCM, and the host reminded me that this film was released in the summer of 1964 – and I saw it that summer, not yet a teenager, totally over the moon, as they say in the UK, over this mania that had infected the world. After all this time, it still brings a chill and a

and Steve Vai, creating a mixture of originality all his own. “Although predominantly selftaught, an obsession to further his musical skills led Fury to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2008 from Binghamton University. He has also studied under world-renowned guitarists Tom Hess (Rhapsody Of Fire) and Greg Howe (Michael Jackson, Enrique Iglesias, and a solo artist). In 2010, Fury’s track “Reborn” was featured on the compilation album Shrouded In Sound: New Guitar Music For A New Decade,” with 14 other artists from around the world. “Fury’s full-length debut release From Darkness is comprised of 13 instrumental emotional tracks, each telling a story within and showcasing Chris’s command of the instrument. The CD was written over a period of five years, with some of the earliest ideas coming from his college dorm.” To Learn More About The Artist: Fury’s new album is available on his website chrisfury.com, and is available everywhere music is sold, including iTunes and Amazon. thrill, and I can’t wait until July 4, when the film will be shown in theatres in the USA to celebrate its half-century (ouch!) anniversary. Criterion Collection is also going to release a Blu-ray, multi-disc box set to mark the event (meaning that I want to buy it again ... and I will!). It’s quite a trip to realize that The Beatles are still the biggest rock & roll band on the planet. Watching the film, I caught some interesting things: John Lennon is looking at a trade magazine, maybe Billboard (or the U.K.’s Music Week), with an advertisement for “Love Potion #9” by The Searchers on the back cover. In the night club scene, Ringo Starr and the big tall guy are actually inventing the pogo, jumping up and down in place, which would finally surface in the UK in 1976/1977 during punk, although there was no gobbing to be seen. The myth that The Monkees TV show was the template for MTV and music video? Sorry – it was clearly A Hard Day’s Night, and seeing it all again on broadcast TV was like seeing it for the first time. That night, TCM also ran Go Go Mania, Having A Wild Weekend, Hold On, and other “British Invasion” flicks featuring the also powerful at the time Dave Clark 5 and Herman’s Hermits, and forgotten names like The Rocking Berries alongside legends such as The Animals with Eric Burdon. My goodness, we had it so good

back then; I don’t think we realized how lucky we were to be around for all this ... until now. See you at the movies on July 4 for A Hard Day’s Night. Here’s To You, Ms. Robinson: The trend-setting Lisa Robinson has finally put it down in writing: A new book, There Goes Gravity: A Life In Rock And Roll (Riverhead Books), tracks the saga of this event-setting woman who glammed up the 1970s while providing even reportage. We follow her at her career inception, meeting and working with her future husband Richard and her editor status at Hit Parader Magazine before birthing Rock Scene Magazine. Like my mentor, Gloria Stavers, Robinson included herself in the mix, and being seen with all the scene makers – rightfully so, as no one was a bigger scene maker than she was. Her column in Creem Magazine, “Eleganza,” focused on fashion in rock & roll before anyone else did, and gave her the chance to turn us on to exotic creatures like The New York Dolls, Bette Midler, and Wayne County. Robinson, in fact, penned a Rock Scene advice column to County, “Dear Wayne,” which in the early-70s was a total mind-blower – imagine, transgendered advice to rockers in 1975! This book is a must, as it’s a historical document of who’s who and what’s what, and how ballsy Lisa Robinson was, and is. Her standoff with Berry Gordy for a Vanity Fair feature (where she has been music editor forever) is worth the price of admission alone. Enjoy There Goes Gravity, because it’s just brilliant.
