Ruby Tuesday: Casual Jewel Or Just Junk Food?

As 2013 ended, the stories in the business section of many newspapers and websites all seemed to report the same thing: Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday. Everyone from Daily Finance to Forbes is predicting that the restaurant chain's sales are so sour that RT may not last the entire year of 2014. In fact, the demise of Ruby Tuesday has been predicted by more than a few business columns and magazines for three consecutive years now. So what's wrong with the Tennessee-based chain, which boasts more than 700 U.S. locations? Why is it failing so badly when other chains such as Chipotle and Panera Bread are raging casual dining successes? And how is it that the chain as a whole seems on the brink of disaster when its location in Westbury seems to have lines of people waiting for tables on most weekend nights – the sign that it's a restaurant that people actually like? In recent years, Tuesday seems to have tried everything it could to entice customers to its menu of signature burgers, ribs, and other casual dining staples. It has refurbished the decor of its locations; it constantly tinkers with its menu; and the company as a whole offers

Our answer is yes and no. We dined at two Long Island locations in recent months, with varying results. People line up in rows for the chain's vaunted self-serve salad bar, but standing in that line is as depressing an experience as any we've encountered short of a prison cafeteria. The salad one of the most aggressive discount selections and array of vegetables are platforms in the casual restaurant passable though jejune, but standing industry, filling e-mail boxes with behind a horde of coupon-clipping half-price enticements and other seniors filling plates with twice their special offers. Still, the body weight's worth reports of poor sales and of pasta salad (and a weak financial outlook sneaking some tidbits (shares of RT were down into their pockets to more than 20 percent in Standing in the take home) is an the two months preced- salad bar line is experience akin to a ing press time) crop up into a about as depressing jumping more often than orders government cheese for its newfangled an experience as a line when you don't “Pretzel Burgers.” really have to. It's prison cafeteria. Our question is, nearly as bad as an obviously: Is it the food afternoon as at that's keeping people Golden Corral, from Ruby Tuesday?

but not quite. Some RT entrees are exceptional. The chain's new chicken tenders are light and crispy, not greasy in the least and an unexpected treat. Ribs here fall off the bone and are layered with tasty sauce, and they're better (and less expensive) than could be expected. However, the chain's steaks (acceptable), burgers (passable), and pastas (think Stouffer's frozen entrees) aren't the type of thing that would make anyone but the most discountoriented diners leave their homes. As for service, don't expect much; from the attitudes, speed, and professionalism of the servers, the place is and always has been Burger King with “waiters.” Ruby Tuesday has always confused us; it’s the king of low-priced offers, yet hordes catsup by serving it in tiny aluminum “eye cups.” That's RT in a nutshell; it’s never figured out exactly what it wants to be. What it may soon be, sadly, is closed forever. Quick Bites: Recently, Corner Stone Diner on Union Turnpike in Flushing closed its doors for the final time; despite decent food and generous portions, the diner's short shelf life – just a few years – proves again that diners remain hit-and-miss.

Dear Mr. Watterson Starring Seth Green, Bill Watterson, Steven Patsis, Berkeley Breathed, Jenny Robb Directed by Joel Allen Schroeder Gravitas Ventures

Oh, those funny little drawings. Coming to you almost for free in daily newspapers, comic strips have long had the ability to add just the right touch of mirth to many of our lives. One of the most beloved of modern times was Calvin & Hobbes, the daily adventures of an antic little boy and the stuffed tiger that only talked to him – but at the height of the strip's popularity, creator and artist Bill Watterson shocked fans by deciding to retire. It was 1995, and many comics fans have yet to recover from the loss. Enter Joel Allen Schroeder's loving, deliberate documentary Dear Mr. Watterson: An Exploration of Calvin & Hobbes, which takes a new tack on matters such as this: Instead of hunting down Watterson and detailing what the former C&H cartoonist is doing now, Schroeder instead focuses on the comic strip itself and shines a spotlight on what it all meant not only to the comic's fans, but to other artists and animators as well. One thing is for sure about Calvin & Hobbes: Those who liked it adored it. Adults loved the premise and the not-too-cute humor, which at times could be rife with satire – but children really took the characters into their hearts, buying books of the old strips by the millions and loving every page of them. It could be stated that Calvin &

Hobbes was the last of the “old time” daily comedy strips; it was never hip, and never wanted to be. Watterson's funny characters relished every moment of being young, and that's one of the major reasons why the series has remained so popular. The film is mainly interviews by those affected by the comic strip, and it all flows in breezy, enjoyable fashion. Noted strongly in the proceedings is that unlike virtually everyone else in the free world, Watterson never licensed the rights to his characters to toy manufacturers, probably costing himself millions of dollars in easy revenue.

But the secret of Calvin and Hobbes was simple: They were just Calvin and Hobbes, inseparable friends from the onset of the strip all the way through its run. Who wouldn't relish a best pal who is always there for you through thick and thin? Love was the reason for the success of Calvin & Hobbes, and that love lives on through its millions of fans. This film is surely worth the rental cost – and if you're already a fan, it's not to be missed. – Bob Smith [Editor's note: Dear Mr. Watterson played for several weeks in indie houses late in 2013 and was released to streaming video at the same time; it can now be viewed at Amazon Prime and iTunes.]

aren't that many jokes in this film, but Hart and his director seem to believe that as long as he's making some sort of squawking or bleating noise, it's hilarious. However, to anyone who likes wit, class, or actual humor in their comedy, an hour and 40 minutes of watching Hart overact is like watching ... well, Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Or Dumb And Dumber . Or The Mask. Or ... Our “plot”: A Georgia-based detective (Cube) doesn't like the douchebag security guard (Hart) that his sister (Tika Sumpter) is dating, so the detective invites the goofy gigalo to spend a day with him on the job ... can you tell where this is

going? Boom, bang, pratfall, dirty joke, pratfall, sight gag, detective discovers that deep inside the goofy douchebag guard isn't so bad after all, bad ending joke, credits. It would be unfair to solely criticize Hart for his constant braying, as he's only doing what some people find so utterly delightful, but Ice Cube is to acting what Jenny McCarthy is to ice fishing. This is pure popcorn – but aren't silly films meant to be, at the very least, entertaining? Our five-year-old nephew makes silly noises and won’t STFU all day, but we’re certainly not pegging him to be the next Eddie Murphy. – Cody Bell

Ride Along

Starring Kevin Hart, Ice Cube, John Leguizamo, Bruce McGill, Lawrence Fishburne, Jay Pharoh, Bryan Callen Directed by Tim Story Universal

Think of it: The very same week the Oscar nominations were announced – flush with artistic, triumphant nominees such as 12 Years A Slave, Gravity, American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf Of Wall Street, and Nebraska – the #1 film in America (and by almost double the box office take of the second-place film, Lone Survivor) was Ride Along, an action/comedy that co-stars standup comic and Professional Bowling Association team owner Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, star of many well-received Coors Light commercials. The Oscar nominees? Few went and saw them, cementing the United States’ reputation as the land of the best and brightest. The week after? Ride Along ranked as #1 again. Clearly, comedy is slipping. Years back, Jim Carrey, as annoying an on-screen performer as any since bungalow flies, starred in a universally lambasted minor comedy, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Shockingly, the film soared to #1, and the same critics who stomped all over Carrey were soon dubbing him a “comic genius.” Cut to 2014, and we get Hart, whose comic persona seems to be simply that if he can be hypertensive, grating, noisy, and non-stop manic, it must be funny. So, here, Hart is hypertensive, grating, noisy, and non-stop manic. Much like his standup act, there

or all of the consternation about Erin snow and bitter cold screwing up Andrews the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium, it was actually fairly temperate for the game by New York standards for early February. It’s funny how all of the whiners in the media obsessed over what the meteorological conditions would be like on Super Bowl Sunday, yet nary a word was said about the absolute frigid conditions that local hockey fans had to put up with to watch two “Stadium Series” games at Yankee Stadium. New York Giants co-owner John Mara is one of the most accessible sports executives you will ever meet, and it was surprising to see him wandering through the Super Bowl media party without any aides. In fact, he seemed happy to be recognized: “Even if you are not a football fan, the energy and excitement of the Super Bowl raises the spirits of everyone living in the metropolitan area,” Mara told me. He concurred with my analogy of how even diehard Democrats enjoyed having the Republican National Convention in New York in 2004. To the NFL’s credit, the league hasn't shied away from the topic of concussions. On the first day of Super Bowl Week, former All-Pro players Mike Haynes and Ted Johnson, along with a number of medical experts, discussed the newest technology designed to record needless helmet hits in youth football leagues. and onetime WWE star Christopher Nowinski is spearheading the drive to get leading technology companies to work with helmet manufacturers so that blows to the head can be counted the way pitches in Little League are counted for young arms. Stamping out concussions is dear to Nowinski’s heart; his WWE career ended prematurely because he absorbed a few of them. Both he and Haynes concede that it will be difficult for old school Central Texas Pop Warner football coaches (the kind that you see on Esquire Network’s “Friday Night Tykes”) to change their ways of teaching how to tackle without using one’s head. Nowinksi also emphasized to the press that concussions don’t just occur in football, but in popular high school sports as lacrosse and soccer as well – and women are no more immune to the dangers of head trauma in sports than guys are. year. Even though it is cold here, the weather is currently far more treacherous in Atlanta and New Orleans.” Buck was happy to have the Super Bowl in New York for another reason: “I am leaving for Europe from JFK the day after the game,” he said, citing his vacation plans. The Super Bowl chill in the New York air gladdened the hearts of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, in town since Glendale, Arizona will be the home of the 2015 Super Bowl. The Caribbean island nation of Aruba had a booth at the GBK Suites, as well as a gifting lounge for NFL players and assorted VIPs, many of whom were certainly looking for a warm weather getaway after the big game. Video game manufacturer Electronic Arts (EA) used the Super Bowl to kick off the silver anniversary of its famous Madden NFL game by having an exhibition at the Museum of Moving Image in Astoria. It is amazing how in 25 years, Madden graphics of NFL players have gone from being Pacman-like to being so lifelike that you have to remind yourself that you are not watching a live game on network TV. Super Bowl week is a big time for product launches and rebranding for corporate America. Radio Shack executives showcased a remodeled Manhattan store and spoke about how exercise technology such as FitBit, which measures cardio and calorie-burning activity, and Sol Republic earbuds popular for those working out, are becoming key parts of their business. When I pointed out how pro wrestlers were like movie stars in her hometown, Andrews replied: “I grew up following Larry Bird and Michael Jordan, not Hulk Hogan.” I think that she protested too much. Fox’s witty baseball and football lead play-byplay voice, Joe Buck, told me that he felt that Sherman’s outburst was both premeditated and inspired by the WWE. He also said that he thought all of the hand-wringing over having a Super Bowl in the New York area was needless: “The Super Bowl week weather was far worse in Dallas last

The end of the NFL season means that spring training is imminent. If you are planning on seeing the New York Mets play exhibition games at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, you may want to stay just a bit up the road in Vero Beach. It has been a number of years since the Dodgers left Vero, but the town in still quite picturesque. The Vero Beach Hotel & Spa is located on the Atlantic, and it’s affordable luxury. Another fun and new-old attraction, Vero Bowl, recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation; it's a sports fan’s destination spot that includes a lavish sports bar as well as recreational bowling and date night and game day specials.

Hot Shows & Sounds All Around The Region

Tracy Morgan The Space At Westbury February 22 Tickets: Ticketmaster.com

The former “Saturday Night Live” (who can ever forget Brian Fellows and Astronaut Jones?) and “30 Rock” star is back on the road, and his recent standup appearances have brought rave reviews. Log on to thespaceatwestbury.com to view a hilarious recent clip of the legendary standup messing around with late night host Conan O'Brien on the redheaded funnyman’s TBS show.

Kanye West Nassau Coliseum February 23 Tickets: Ticketmaster.com

Bob Weir & Ratdog • NYCB Theater At Westbury, Feburary 21 & 22 Tickets: Ticketmaster.com

How long can it go on? The Grateful Dead's many splinter acts roll on down the U.S. highways, keeping their rabid fan base of millions happy; it's a teeming one that never seems to dwindle. Neither do the skills of Weir, who remains as affable and pleasing a performer, not to mention as talented a guitarist, as any who graduated from rock's classic era. The current edition of Ratdog features as stellar a cast as any Weir has presented to his fans thus far in Robin Sylvester, guitarist extraordinaire (and longtime area favorite) Steve Kimock, Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane, and Rob Wasserman. Intrepid Dead fans – especially after enjoying this concert – might want to venture to decrepit Greene County in this spring, as Ratdog will headline the annual “Mountain Jam” on June 5 and 6 in Hunter Mountain – but don’t get stuck in Oak Hill; you’ll never forgive yourself. – Bob Smith

His relationship with the bodacious Kim Kardashian seems to garner more interest than his recent music of late, but it's a stone cold fact that West is one of the most popular artists in modern music history. The numbers add up: He's touring to support Yeezus – his sixth consecutive album to debut at #1 on the charts.

Tower Of Power February 15 B.B. Kings, New York City bbkingblues.com

The legendary big band wowed the audience at NYCB Theatre in Westbury this past fall, but already there's a major difference: TOP now features a new lead singer in Ray Greene. Regardless, Emilio Castillo's touring unit remains one of the tightest and funkiest in R&B history.

The amazing Abbie Gardner (also a jazz singer with solo albums to her credit), Laurie MacAllister, and newest member Molly Venter have already turned the folk music world on its ear since the act's out-of-the-blue 2004 debut, and with good reason: Their modern take on acoustic music is as robust as it is accessible. If you're not familiar with them, this is a great chance to get acquainted; one listen and look and you'll forget that folk music was supposed to be a “passe” relic of an era gone by. Red Molly makes everything they play sound fresh and unique. Albums to check out include Light In The Sky, James, Love And Other Tragedies, Never Been To Vegas, and their debut four-song EP from 2005, as well as their associated solo discs. – Bob Smith {Other shows at YMCA Boulton Center during this February period: Taj Mahal and his renowned jazz trio on February 19; standup comedy with the multi-headliner “Big Laughs In Bay Shore” on February 21; big, brash bluesman Popa Chubby on February 22.]

Between The Buried & Me February 21 The Paramount, Huntington ticketmaster.com; paramountny.com

Between The Buried And Me seems to be a band that's “on the verge,” all angsty and terse and rocking like the young folk do these days ...well, a few of the young folk, anyway. Also on this jam-packed show are Deafheaven, Intronaut, and Kindred; make ticket plans now to see BTB&M, which clearly is one of the hottest acts on any scene.

Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show February 11 (Finals) Madison Square Garden, New York City ticketmaster.com

Don't laugh: Mt. Rushmore’s Beanbag Chair and his many contemporaries have been top draws at the “World's Most Famous Arena” for ages; these televised dog shows draw huge ratings for The USA Network. The finals, on this night, are rife with tension as the winners in various breeds vie for the “best in show” trophy.

With tickets in high demand for their current tour, Queens' favorite sons, Bayside, will release their sixth studio album, Cult, on February 18. Pre-sale tickets for their “Great American CULT Tour” are significantly outpacing all previous Bayside headline tours; they'll return to the area on April 4 when they headline Best Buy Theater in New York City. Although Bayside cut their teeth on several Vans Warped Tours, they’re so hot at present that they surely seem to have arena in their future. The band remains Anthony Raneri, Jack O’Shea, Nick Ghanbarian, and Chris Guglielmo.

TECHNOBEAT By Richard Joseph Branciforte

F

or Hardwell fans: You’ll be happy to hear that the artist is doing his Revealed North American bus tour with Dyro and Dannic. I’ve had the privilege of seeing him multiples times and would urge you to get your tickets ASAP. The tour starts in April and goes around to a few cities over the course of 10 days including Syracuse and Columbus, Ohio.

Hardwell

He was also voted the world’s #1 DJ in DJ Mag’s Top 100 World. Hardwell is a force to be reckoned with and if he’s coming near you, or you’re willing to travel, I would make sure you get online and get your tickets. Coming out soon we have a powerhouse team of artists who have put their forces together in order to make a new hit. I’m talking about the likes of Steve Aoki, Autoerotique, and Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike. These guys have come together to put out “Feedback” on Dim Mak records. It has a big room, empty sounding drop (something that is becoming very big nowadays) and has a

similar sound to that of “Make Some Noise” by Chuckie. Nevertheless, I am sure with a trio like this, the quality of the song, and the promotions that are sure to ensue, that “Feedback” will make its way towards the top of the dance music charts without a problem.

Next topic to talk about is something that I know is on a lot of peoples’ minds and that is Ultra Music Festival in Miami. I’m sure if you’re reading this article right now you have heard of Ultra and may have even been to it once or twice. I was blown away when Phase 1 of the lineup was released. I wasn’t looking as much forward to Phase 2 because, frankly, that’s just how it works. Usually, all of the top artists are announced at first and then there really isn’t anyone else to look forward to for the next phase. With that being said, I was thrilled when I saw Phase 2, including some of my favorite artists. Alvin Risk, Clockwork, Dirtyphonics, Crizzly, Figure, RL Grime, Pegboard Nerds, MAKJ, Gramatik, Paper Diamond... and the list just goes on and on and if I were to write all of the Phase 2 artists, it would take up a good portion of my column. What I’m trying to say is that you are going to have something to look forward to this year. Ultra is looming and may be something to look forward to, but you can’t forget about those smaller shows that pop up all the time. I recently got to see Getter, Heroes x Villians, and Datsik at F Shed at The Market in Syracuse. The night started off with Getter, playing some really heavy dubstep. As the night went on, he worked some trap and big room into the mix including “Stampede.” He did a pretty good job mixing as the songs blended together well. He was a great opening act and finished with two of my favorites: “Terror Squad” by Zomboy and

Datsik

“Gun Finga” by Eptic. Next up was a set filled with trap as Heroes x Villians took the stage. I was okay with this, as trap is one of my favorite EDM genres. He played a lot of good remixes including “Mara (ak9 remix)” by Carnage and “Flute” by New World Sound. He killed it up there and I’d have to say he was my favorite act of the night (only by a little, though!). Last up was the kind of bass music, Datsik. The first two opening acts didn’t have much lighting on them, which was upsetting, but it was for good reason. When Datsik came up, the curtain the dropped and revealed his new “Vortex” which he travels around with. It’s an encapsulating piece of equipment with Datsik deejaying in

the middle of the swirling visuals. He also had an absurd amount of strobes and other lights with him, easily making it one of the best visuals show I’ve seen at a standard concert. All of Datsik’s drops were extremely bass heavy, with wub to the max, making every person want to jump and go crazy with each song he played. He also happened to play one of my personal favorites ever, “Tequila (J. Rabbit Remix)” toward the end of his set, as well as “Bonafide Hustler (Trap VIP).” He also did a great job of throwing it back and incorporating some really popular hip hop songs such as “The Next Episode” by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg and “Juicy” by Notorious B.I.G., and mixing them together with dirty dubstep to create some really awesome samples and drops. That’s one of the things that distinguishes bigger name DJs from the smaller ones – their ability to not only mix but to create unique and interesting song combinations and to incorporate songs that people know and are familiar with to create their own individual experience. That’s about all I have for today. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns at richiegtechno@gmail.com. See you soon, and remember, keep raging my friends.

The Finest Of 2013 A.J. Lee

N

o time like the present to look back at the very best of 2013: Best TV Concept – WWE Network: Whether you enjoy pro wrestling or not, this is a brilliant concept. Instead of bartering with cable companies, World Wrestling Entertainment is launching its own network on February 24 that utilizes the best of new media – Roku and other set-top boxes, tablets, PCs, tablets (including Amazon's Kindle), video game consoles (which millions of customers already use to watch Netflix), and many Smart TVs – as its main distribution platform. It will enable the company to charge a flat $9.99 monthly fee, which will include all of its pay-per-view events (and scads of other programming) at no extra charge. This means that consumers that enjoy watching WWE superstars

Shazam

A.J. Lee and Daniel Bryan will save money on special events that they used to have to order at prices just shy of $60 each via cable systems; it also means that WWE keeps its profits at home while continuing to offer its regular, highly rated cable programming and live traveling events. Pro wrestling has come a long way since it was run in armories and flea markets, and you can thank Vince McMahon for that. This seems imposible: It's a huge corporation that's about to save its own fans money while making them happy, loyal customers. Best Gadget – Roku: It was nearly two years ago that we proclaimed

this nifty little box would end up saving consumers hundreds of dollars per years on digital entertainment, and we'll be darned if it (and other devices such as MacTV) have more than surpassed

expectations. If you don't have one, you're missing out. Best App – Shazam: Hey, what's the song? Now you know – but will you stop holding that phone toward the sky while you use it? Best General Interest Website: TWiT.tv: This tech-happy website is everything CNET ought to be but hasn't been for years. Proof there's room for more if more is better. Best Special Interest Website: WatchLords.com: A group of hobbyists, treated like cattle at sites sponsored by watch companies, form their own splinter site with results just short of crusading journalism. WatchLords has uncovered such a wealth of misrepresented products, seedy home shopping networks, bad customer service, and flat-out lies within the watch industry that the

members would have already received some sort of award if anyone actually cared about consumers these days. It's for adults only (it's uncensored and the

WatchLords has uncovered flat-out lies within the watch industry; it’s a timepiece buyer’s answered prayer. language is raw), but WatchLords is a timepiece buyer's answered prayer. It also features some of the best satirical writing on the web – from people who don't even sign their names to their work, no less. Best TV Network: HBO. From “Girls” to “Game Of Thrones,” it's the only network that still is the main topic at the water cooler. Best Radio Station: Long Island’s FM band. There’s no need to subscribe to something; LI’s varied formats put NYC stations to shame.

wire; not a good thing. Yeah, Paul and Ringo returned. I was a little kid, there from the beginning, a true Beatles fan. The reports of Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney performing together were a big reason that so many people tuned in. It was fun seeing them together, but Ringo's demeanor reminded me of what I commonly refer to as "Mary Wilson Syndrome" – whenever Wilson is around her fellow former Supreme, Diana Ross. It was good to hear Ringo doing a great job on "Photograph," but I could smell the resentment coming through the TV screen. I'm looking forward to The Beatles' 50th anniversary specials that will be all over the place in February. Long live Yoko! The weddings? Madonna with a cane? Queen Latifah? Somewhere in

ot Your Grammy's Grammies: The Grammy Awards are certainly scoring well in the ratings these days, as most awards shows seem to be in the social media world where we all get to instantly comment every time someone sneezes. After a period where The Grammy Awards were downtrending (they ignored metal, hip hop, MTV, other trends for far too long), they finally came on board with the modern world and are generating ratings and ad rates like some football games do. Where to begin? Beyoncé was wearing almost nothing, her husband Jay Z joined her, and she stole the show from onset, performing "Drunk In Love" from her sneak attack album that had radio and retail up in arms – but sold like crazy as a digital-only release. Beyoncé and Z certainly keep their eyes on today's newspapers, so to speak, and have remained in step with the everchanging face of tech as it affects the music biz. Good for them. I just don't know what to think of Pink. She is a true talent, she has stood the test of time, and has had huge hits more than a decade after she first made an impact ... but the circus act? The flying trapeze? Again? I'm sorry, I don't get it. Every year? It was interesting the first time around, but this seems to now be a permanent part of her routine. It really takes away from the “artist” stance, and lots of folks thought she was lip synching when she was on the high

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

there was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and I'm a fan, have been all along, but the boys and the song ("Same Love") seemed to get lost in all the hoopla and circus of it all. Nonetheless, I'm glad they did it, and

Paul and Ringo returned; Beyoncé wore next to nothing; Pink offered her circus act once again. I'm curious to see and hear where the boys go next. That's all the fun of pop music, after all – who gets to stick around, who does not.

Who: One of the busiest Long Islandbased club acts of recent vintage, Johnny & The Triumphs, recently under went a metamorphosis: The group is now known as Three (or “3”). The band specializes in recreating the sounds of such legendary trios as Grand Funk Railroad, Cream, The Script, The Police, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, The John Mayer Trio, The Stray Cats, Jimi Hendrix, and countless three-musician acts.

The Artists & Their Sound: Provided by Three: “As our amazing fans have said, ‘With just three guys, Three sounds like a band of five!’ Three accomplished singers and three accomplished musicians ... Three is really something special. “Paying homage to the great trios that music has known – trom The Script, John Mayer Trio, The Police, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Cream to Buddy Holly – Three has it covered. “Three started out by pure chance in 2009. A band called The G-String Band was having a reunion party where all past and present members were invited to come and sit in for an all-night jam session. Although never officially band members, Frank C, Steve F, and Frank F were all in attendance to support their mutual friends. Through pure sympatico, when Frank F was called up to

sing and play a few tunes, Frank C and Steve were already on stage at their respective bass and drum posts. It was pure magic from the very first notes, and the seeds of Three were planted. “Originally, we started out as Johnny & The Triumphs (johnnyandthetriumphs.com). We had some fun basing the band around a fictitious frontman (after all, there is no ‘Johnny’ in the band). As we fine-tuned our band, we kept hearing the same thing: "All that music and sound from three guys?" So we knew that we were, as we always had been ... Three. To Learn More About The Band: Log on to threetheband.net, as well as facebook.com/THREEtheband. Upcoming shows on their packed schedule: February 15 at Toro Pazzo in Wantagh; February 28 at The Twisted Kilt on Bohemia; March 1 at Ziggy’s Corner Pug in Massapequa; and March 8 at Giacmo Jack’s in Amityville.

Katy Perry’s Prayer

Gets Answered (Ours, Too)

For some reason we can't fathom, the February issue of GQ, pictured above, has been flying off newsstand sheves. Perhaps it has to do with the cover and interview feature, Katy Perry, who speaks on a variety of subjects in her article – not the least of which is her, shall we say, pulchritude, which is something she admitted she prayed for when she was a child. “I lay on my back one night and looked down at my feet, and I prayed to God,” Perry told GQ. “I said, 'God will you please let me have boobs so big that I can't see my feet when I'm lying down? … God answered my prayers. I had no clue they would fall into my armpits eventually.” Those wishing to score a copy of this particular issue of GQ – which also features other arty yet sexy photos of Ms Perry – had best get a move on; area newsstand clerks informed us it's their biggest seller since WWE wrestler Chyna appeared on the cover of Playboy several years ago.

Four Shows Added To Run

More Allmans At Beacon: Thanks to overwhelming demand, The Allman Brothers Band added four more shows at New York City’s Beacon Theatre, with 14 total shows now running from March 7 to March 29. These added dates (March 25, 26, 28, and 29) are in addition to the 10 shows

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees and live music stalwarts have performed at the 2,800-seat Beacon more than 220 times since the tradition began. The group’s lineup – founding members Gregg Allman (vocals and keyboards), Butch Trucks (drums and tympani), and Jaimoe (drums), plus longtime members Warren Haynes (vocals, lead and slide guitar), Derek Trucks (slide and lead guitar), Otiel Burbridge (bass), and Marc Quinones (congas and percussion) – will perform all 2014 shows together. Lily Allen

New Lyric Video For Hit

Lily Allen:

There are pop stars, then there are musicians: After amassing more than a million views for the YouTube audio version of her song, "Air Balloon," Lily Allen recently released the lyric video for that same single, which can be viewed on the same platform. The track was written by Allen with Shellback, who also produced the song. Allen continues to work on her third album, slated for release later this year. Her previous two albums sold more than five million copies worldwide ,and she has charted three #1 singles. In December 2013, Allen surprised many by releasing two tracks at the same time: "Somewhere Only We Know," which reached #1 in the UK, and the ground-breaking "Hard Out Here," which reached #9 in the UK as a download-only release.

Initial orders of the CD will be stored in a Limited Edition Digipack with a pull out poster and include two bonus tracks as well as other limited edition bundles for the new effort. To order yours, log on to theprettyreckless.merchnow.com. The band wowed fans at their recent appearance at The Paramount in Huntington

the disc Momsen fell ill. Momsen is best described by her songwriting partner, Ben Phillips: “She went into the vocal booth and began to sing and we turned to each other and went, ‘Holy sh*t, she’s f**’ing great ... Her voice was astonishing. So many artists these days let their voices be discombobulated by computers. Taylor doesn’t do that. She doesn’t need to. She can walk into a room and kick your ass.”
