He will be seen in the forthcoming feature film The World Made Straight, co-starring Minka Kelly, Noah Wyle, and Haley Joel Osment. He is also host of “The Steve Earle Show: Hardcore Troubadour Radio” on Sirius XM Radio. Earle is also an author, penning his debut novel, I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, in 2011. Based in Brooklyn but raised in Louisville, Kentucky, singer/songwriter Dawn Landes has been writing songs for most of her life, and at 33 has more than a decade of

a ride. Juke joints and cotton fields, rotgut whiskey and back alley crap games, lowdown, lonesome, trifling women, and hard times. That’s the blues, y’all.” True To The Blues: The Johnny Winter Story lives up to its title with a chronological track sequence of studio and live material that underscores Johnny Winter’s hard-won reputation as an American blues master. The contents are sourced from no less than 27 separate albums on the Imperial, Columbia, Blue Sky/Epic, Alligator, Point Blank (Virgin), Friday Music, Megaforce, and Columbia/Legacy labels. These range from his independently recorded and released The Progressive Blues Experiment of 1968 (“Bad Luck And Trouble,” “Mean Town Blues”) up through 2011’s all-star duets project, Roots (“Maybelline” with Vince Gill, “Dust My Broom” with Derek Trucks). Guests abound throughout True To The Blues, starting with the third track as fellow blues guitar giant Michael Bloomfield introduces Johnny

Winter to the Fillmore East audience in December 1968, during a “Super Session” live concert date with Al Kooper. It was Winter’s first trip to New York City. Among other notable musicians on True To The Blues are Dr. John on “Illustrated Man,” recorded in Chicago in 1991. A year later, Winter was invited to the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration at Madison Square Garden, to reprise his blistering version of “Highway 61 Revisited,” one of two indelible covers of Dylan, along with Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower,” that defined the closing of the 1960s. Joining Winter at MSG was that night’s all-star “house band” of G.E. Smith, Steve Cropper, Booker T. Jones, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Anton Fig, and Jim Keltner. True To The Blues not only showcases Winter and the band lineups he has led over the years, many of them (up through 1976) including his brother, Edgar Winter, on vocals and an array of instruments including keyboards, reeds, and drums.

roofs and tear down walls with her infectious, intelligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking roadhouse blues, and heartfelt ballads. Castro has been playing his signature brand of rocking rhythm and blues professionally for more than 25 years, thrilling fans around the world with his incendiary live performances and superb guitar acumen. With his new, stripped-down, turbocharged band The Painkillers, Castro has embarked on the next phase of his storied career. Starring Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Patton Oswalt, Kathryn Hahn, Shirley MacLaine, Sean Penn, Adam Scott Directed by Ben Stiller 20th Century Fox On a talk show appearance about two months ago, comic actor Patton Oswalt gleefully waxed on about his role in Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, praising the upcoming big-budget film as an “epic comedy.” Most critics and films buffs also were thrilled about the prospect of one of James Thurber’s short stories being retold by the deft mind of Stiller, clearly one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men during the past decade. Now, as we approach February, the smoke has cleared, and the judgment has been made: This new ultra-expensive version of Mitty ranks as not only one of the biggest film failures of 2013, but it also failed to earn the critical notice the film seemed destined to obtain ever since it was originally conceived. During the holidays, audiences flocked to family films such as Frozen and The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug as well as to adult dramas American Hustle and The Wolf Of Wall Street, leaving this expensive failure to lay in positions seven through nine in the Top 10; even older films such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire drew better numbers in

most cities. At press time, the new The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty truly ranked as a secret, languishing at #13 in the box office tallies. Truly, this Mitty is a pity. But why? Perhaps the biggest factor is the “epic” part that Oswalt hinted about. Not content to achieve the lilting charm of the original James Thurber story it was based upon (or of the warm, silly 1947 version starring Danny Kaye), Stiller’s Mitty, who imagines himself in a variety of heroic situations in response to a humdrum life, isn’t nearly as likable as previous versions of the character. Stiller’s precious yet dark telling of this time-worn tale is elaborate and detailed, yet immensely boring. Among the performers scheduled to appear in Westbury are Rick Thomas, Farrell Dillon, and Michael Giles, among many more. Thomas is a premier illusionist, having completed five world tours covering more than 50 countries. scenarios – don’t ring with any sort of excitement. It makes matters worse that even with all the attention to detail during the action sequences, the juxtaposition of what’s real and what is Mitty’s fantasy isn’t always made outwardly clear; it’s more annoying than arty. In all, it makes this Walter Mitty a muted oddball of a hero that is absolutely impossible to root for. Wiig is winning as the Life Magazine office co-worker that Mitty is smitten with, but the building romance isn’t enough to save this oddly unmoving fantasy film. Too adult for kids and far too juvenile for adults, this “secret life” tries to be all things for all people, but doesn’t work on virtually any level. The soggy box office tallies are justified, as this ranks as one of the most disappointing big budget movies of the first half of this decade. – Cody Bell Las Vegas and at The Planet Hollywood Saxe Theater. hat is most surprising about the Alex Rodriguez scenario is how many members of the media were urging “A-Rod” to meekly accept the 2014 season-long suspension handed down to him by arbitrator Frederic Horowitz. If Rodriguez were take to take Major League Baseball to court, all of the sordid dealings between MLB and Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch – Rodriguez' onetime confidante and alleged supplier – would come out. That is a gift to every media outlet in the world. The problem is that most sportswriters and broadcasters like covering games and detest Alex the idea of hanging around a Rodriguez courthouse to cover real news, even though that story would clearly be in the financial interests of their media companies. Even if a trial were to prove that “A-Rod” was the biggest PED used of all time, he could do significant damage to Bud Selig and Major League Baseball. It's still quite confusing why Rodriguez is suing the Major League Baseball Players Association, a move that won’t endear him to his teammates whenever he does return. From a media viewpoint, “A-Rod” is the gift that just keeps on giving. To no one’s surprise, former Atlanta Braves pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine were

elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, as was slugger Frank Thomas, in their first year of eligibility. Kings Park native Craig Biggio fell a measly two votes short of induction. What is most bothersome about the voting is that Mike Piazza received only 62 percent of the vote in his second year of eligibility. He should have been an automatic in his first year on the ballot, but too many members of the Baseball Writers Association of America have taken a “guilty until proven innocent” view of Piazza because they suspect that he used steroids. It doesn’t matter to them that he never tested positive, nor was he named in the Mitchell Report. He also wasn't called to testify before Congress the way other players were. These BBWAA guys are guilty of McCarthyism, with steroids replacing Communism as the bogeyman. It is going to be difficult for Piazza to get the votes necessary for enshrinement in 2015 as well, since Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, and John Smoltz should all be shoo-ins, and Biggio may finally squeak in as well. Piers Morgan interrogated Kenny Anderson on his CNN program last week for being one of a number of former NBA players who went on Dennis Rodman’s latest ill-advised tour of North Korea.

have done in a similar situation; if Anderson refused to shake the North Korean dictator’s hand, he might have met the same fate that Kim’s uncle did. Although he earned millions as an NBA star, Anderson has admitted that he squandered it all, and has to do whatever he can to feed his family. New York Jets general manager John Idzik did a smart thing by extending Rex Ryan’s contract into 2016. Idzik won’t be signing Kellen Winslow, Jr. to a contract extension after the tight end was arrested by New Jersey law enforcement authorities for alleged lewd conduct – apparently a euphemism for publicly masturbating. For a guy who did not catch many passes for the Jets last year, he sure was

caught in the act. Sad to learn that Chris Wheeler will not be part of the Philadelphia Phillies TV broadcasting team next year. It would be nice if the Phillies could find a way to place him back in the radio booth. Much like John Sterling and Mike Francesa, Wheeler is either beloved or despised. He bleeds Phillies red, but he is quite candid when they are screwing up on the field, which was often last year. He also points out things about the opposing team which the home broadcasters would never say. In all, it makes it fun and educational for New York Mets fans to eavesdrop on the Phillies’ broadcasts when they are playing the “Amazin’s.” More from the City of Brotherly Love: Philadelphia Magazine writer Richard Rys took his life in his hands when he attended various Eagles games in 2013 dressed in the jerseys of opposing NFC East teams when they were playing at Lincoln Financial Field. He wanted to see if the maniacal reputation of Eagles fans was true. He claims that while he did encounter a few yahoos who threatened him with violence, most folks attending the game were polite, and at worst offered gentle razzing. The Mets signed former Washington Nationals starting pitcher John Lannan – who grew up and still resides in Long Beach – to a minor league contract last week. General manager Sandy Alderson is hoping that home cooking will help revive the lefty’s career. It was good to see Todd Pratt as one of the instructors at the Mets’ fantasy camp in Port St. Lucie two weeks ago. Pratt was one of the leaders on those

late-90s pennant-contending Mets teams, and did a fine job backing up Piazza. Pratt delivered numerous big hits, including a home run in 1999 that won a playoff series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In spite of his heroics and being both a fan and media favorite, Mets management has not done right by Pratt; they did not invite him to the 2008 closing ceremonies of Shea Stadium, even though he had one of the biggest hits in that ballpark’s history. Pratt has a great baseball mind, and is similar to Clint Hurdle because he can come up with a humorous quip for writers and knows how to both teach and motivate players. Perhaps Mets management is looking at Pratt in a more favorable light now; better late than never. World Wrestling Entertainment used the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to announce that it was forming the digital pay network, The WWE Network, which will debut on February 24. Another new cable network, El Rey, announced it will air an independent wrestling promotion as part of its programming lineup.

This all-Beatles weekend, which will include films and concerts, begins on Friday, February 7 at 8 pm with “Legends: The Beatles.” Archivist and filmmaker Joe Lauro will open long-dormant film vaults to present a special event detailing the history of the “Fab Four.” From their first known film shot at The Cavern Club in 1962 to their final 1969 “rooftop” concert, The Beatles will be in the house performing their music on film like it was only “yesterday” ... get it?

ea Michele, the much-photographed, much-coveted star of Fox Television's popular series “Glee,” is set to release her debut solo music album, Louder, on March 4. Marking the Bronx-born beauty's first career foray as a solo artist, the album is underscored by the singer's already renowned pop voice, beautiful ballads, and emotionally driven lyrics. The album is currently available for pre-order, and includes an instant download of the lead single, "Cannonball," which Michele unveiled on December 12 during a performance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” The new single has already achieved hit status during initial streaming; you can find it at smarturl.it/CannonballPseudo. "Louder really encompasses my experiences over this past year and my journey as an artist up to this point," said Michele, also noted for her sensational, headline-making pictorials in magazines such as Rolling Stone and Maxim.

LEA MICHELE

From ‘Glee’ To The Pop Stratosphere

"There's a lot of emotion but it's also very encouraging and hopeful—it's about pushing forward and living your life in a way that's louder, stronger, and bolder. I'm so excited to share this new side of me with my fans." Recorded over the past year, stand out tracks on Louder include the Sia-penned lead single "Cannonball," the pop/rock anthem "On My Way," and "Battlefield," a heartfelt ballad also in collaboration with Sia. Other album selections include the

edgy pop song "Burn With You," and the title track "Louder" which culminates this eclectic album. Standout contributors to the disc include Christina Perri, Colin Munroe, and Stargate. Lea Michele's debut album, Louder, is available for pre-order now, and includes an instant download of her debut single "Cannonball." Visit LeaMicheleMusic.com for more info. The track list for Louder includes

“Cannonball,” “On My Way,” “Burn With You,” “Battlefield,” “You're Mine,” “Thousand Needles,” “Louder,” “Cue The Rain,” “Don't Let Go,” “Empty Handed,” and “If You Say So.” Michele is best known for her performance as "Rachel Berry" on the mega-popular, Golden Globe, Grammy, and SAG award-winning Fox television series “Glee.” She has been nominated for an Emmy, a SAG Award, and multiple Golden Globe awards. The “Glee” cast recordings have sold more than 10 million singles, and garnered more than 20 Top 40 US Billboard Hot 100 hits. Currently serving as a spokesperson for L'Oreal Paris, Michele will release her first book, Brunette Ambition, this spring, and lends her vocal talents as "Dorothy" in Summertime Entertainment's animated 3D musical “Dorothy Of Oz,” set for release in early 2014. The new album is available for pre-orders at both iTunes and Amazon.com.

Currently touring in support of a new single, “Dead Wrong,’ Caravan of Thieves “will treat concertgoers to a show that channels pop bliss through its trademark lock-tight, turnof-the-century, bang-out-a-beat-onanything-that-can-take-it approach,” according to a press release. Our take: The band is a hoot, and here’s an opportunity to catch it in the intimate environs of The Congregational Church of Huntington. Now in its 45th year, The Folk Music Society of Huntington presents two monthly concert series, a monthly folk jam, and a folk festival with The Huntington Arts Council.

Pennino-Smith Earns Song Award

Paradiddle Records children’s recording artist Lena Pennino-Smith recently took first place in the 30th annual Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest for the song “I Love U” in the Family Music category. The artist, who last year released her debut CD, Happy As Clams, on the Paradiddle label, also earned honorable mentions for “Grabby The Crabby” and “Welcome To This World.” All three songs are included on the debut CD, which last year was also named as a Parent’s Choice Award winner. Billy Joel’s Residency At The Garden

Backing It Up: Just out on DVD is a great documentary film, 20 Feet From Stardom, which details the ups and downs of the backup singers who are so close and yet so far away from that mic in the center of the stage. The most famous backup singer to ever cause a stir is Mary Wilson

there's Merry Clayton, the powerful female voice that you hear on "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones and everything from vintage Joe Cocker to "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Merry is truly one of a kind, and still has an astounding voice. Many of the iconic females featured in the film are 70 years old or older. Motown divas Tata Vega and Mable John show up, as does Susaye Greene, who did her share of backup sessions before becoming the very last Supreme in the mid-70s incarnation of the all time classic girl group. Lisa Fisher and Judith Hall are spotlighted, neither having made it onto the charts or breaking through in any way while making artists such as Michael Jackson and Sting sound good. There are interviews with Sting, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, and many others, all helping to piece together the interesting and frequently heartbreaking story of the “backup singer.” The film 20 Feet From Stardom will certainly keep you entertained as well as open your eyes to a part of the music biz that you don't get to see that often. CBGB Lives On: The day has come when you can stroll into Walmart and buy a CD with The Dead Boys, Johnny Thunders, and Wayne County on it, as well as the DVD of the CBGB film. Who would have thought that the day would come when once-reviled punk rock would burrow its way into the sales racks of middle America? The soundtrack is fantastic, and the movie is alright, although not what it could have or should have been – but punk has found its place into “housewives central.” Will wonders never cease?

of The Supremes, whose books and constant attacks on lead singer Diana Ross have kept Wilson in the spotlight for decades and have added fuel to the "Dream Girls"-style rivalry that people love to read about and gossip columnists love to report on. Wilson isn't in this documentary – and neither is former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland, who also had her ups and downs with that group's former lead singer, Beyoncé. Regardless, there is still plenty here to keep your attention. First and foremost is Darlene Love, who was part of Phil Spector's "Wall Of Sound" in the 1960s and who “ghost sang” the lead vocals on hit records by The Crystals ("He's A Rebel") and others. She was also the lead singer of The Blossoms (seen on Johnny Thunders the 1960s TV series "Shindig"), who sang on everything from Frank Sinatra records to the classic backup vocals on "The Monster Mash." Darlene's story (and breathtaking performances) are well worth the price of admission – but then

Shelly Bhushan Truly ‘Something’ Special

Who: Shelly Bhushan is a young veteran pop/rock vocalist hailing from Queens. Her latest album, Something Out Of Nothing (available now via iTunes) has been opening eyes and making its way up several

charts thanks to standout songs such as the title track, “Flickering,” “Blinded,” and “Digging In Deep.” The Artist & Her Sound: In the artist’s own words: “My name is Shelly Bhushan. I'm an artist here in this beautiful and tragic metropolis called New York City; a land filled with runaways, go-getters, movers, shakers, low lifes, high lifes, artists, gypsies, tramps and thieves … oh, and a ton of artists and musicians. I’m just one of the above. “I’m half Mexican, half Indian (yes,

from India), born and raised in Texas. I moved to New York City for music, and I remember the moment my feet touched the ground. It was the first time I had seen people who looked like me. It was the first time that I felt energy. The streets sparkled and I knew I had found where I belonged; it was eye opening and awesome. I love this town. I’ve been here a long time, so I’m not sure if I’m a Texan or a New Yorker. Maybe I can be both. “I used to write songs about the basics: people sucking, love gone wrong, and being hurt and angry, until I got inspired by the world around me. Little things started to carry new meaning: house plants, laptops, the recession, the pending apocalypse of 2011 and 2012, a feather floating on the subway, taking the edge off via a few glasses of wine, really anything. I figured out a way to translate observations into bigger things, parallels. These little things helped me to see life in an entirely new, gorgeous, full, beautiful and bigger way. Maybe you feel the same way too.” To Learn More About The Artist: Bhushan’s newest album, Something Out Of Nothing, is available via both iTunes and Amazon.com – as are her previous efforts, The Shelly Show, Picking Daisies, and Make Believe. Happy (Fill In The Blank): Naughty America’s Hot Gift

It is now possible you can trade that Target, Best Buy, Starbucks, or any of the dozens of different popular retail gift cards for something you secretly really wanted this year. The fantasy masters at adult entertainment powerhouse Naughty America are now offering full access to its massive network of porn sites in exchange for your unwanted gift cards. The Starbucks card that would normally give you a short-lived moment with a hot beverage can now give you access to "more than 5,000 porn videos and over 2,000 porn stars, including the hottest models working today such as Lisa Ann, Nikki Benz, Julia Ann,Tasha Reign, Jayden Jaymes, Brandi Love, and Emma Starr," according to Naughty America founder Andreas Hronopoulos via The Huffington Post. "Nothing says America like the freedom of choice," Qunn Lemley Hronopoulos said. "Instead of using a gift card for a $5 coffee, you're getting a porn subscription." The list of accepted gift cards is quite long, and you can view them at naughtyamerica.com/

Following her single "Overdose,” Denmark's glampop queen Medina recently released her sophomore U.S. album, Forever. The new effort is packed with electro/pop anthems, including the forthcoming single, "Fool." "It's about having people in your life you just need to get rid of because they're just no good,” explained Medina. “The song's about feeling sorry for those who refuse to change for the better." Another single is "Junkie," a slick, progressive house track.

Allmans, Beacon:

The Allman Brothers Band

A Sign Of Spring

The Allman Brothers Band has announced plans for its 45th anniversary in 2014, including the annual string of concerts at New York City’s Beacon Theatre, with 14 shows kicking off March 7. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have performed at the 2,800-seat Beacon more than 220 times since they began the tradition in 1989. “It’s always good to get back on stage with the Brothers,” says ABB co-founder Gregg Allman. “Man, beyond the Brothers, that Beacon audience is like our family. You can look into their eyes — they’re right on top of you … there’s no other room like it.” All of their 2013 Beacon Theatre shows sold out. The Allman Brothers Band first began performing its annual multi-night engagements at the Beacon in 1989, with few exceptions, and have now performed there 222 times so far. The 2014 shows will mark their only metropolitan NYCarea performances.
