Holiday Sing-Along At Staller Center

The seasonal traditional concert at Stony Brook University – an annual tradition and a true favorite of Suffolk County holiday revelers – will feature members of The University Orchestra, vocal soloists, and several conductors in a performance of Handel’s “Messiah” on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 3 p.m. in the Recital Hall at Staller Center. Annual Dickens Festival In Port Jefferson Village The eighth annual Charles Dickens Festival takes part throughout Port Jefferson Village daily from December 6 through December 8. It's amazing how well Sykes' music – he's considered one of the fathers of blues piano – holds up today … The changing world of blues music was highlighted in the annual Blues Blast music awards, which were held on October 31 at Buddy Guy's Blues Club in Chicago. Winners included Shaun Murphy, the former Little Feat singer whose album, Ask For The Moon, was named Album of the Year – as well as The Cash Box Kings, Albert Castiglia, Southern Hospitality, Curtis Salgado, Doug MacLeod, and Doug Deming … For those of you who think blues music sells for less, think again: Longtime Blues record collector and expert John Tefteller was the winning bidder at $37,100 for a rare 78 RPM record by blues legend Tommy Johnson. This marks the highest price ever paid for a single 78 rpm blues record, as well as one of the highest prices ever paid for any record. The record, Tommy Johnson on the Paramount label from 1930, is one of only two known and verified copies. All other copies of this disc are presumed lost or destroyed. The two songs on this record "Alcohol And Jake Blues" and "Ridin' Horse," are considered masterpieces of the genre; Johnson ranks among such other early blues legends as Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, and Skip James.

hey lived hard, died young (Billie Holiday at 44, Janis Joplin at 27 from a heroin overdose) after battling drug and alcohol addiction, and sang of heartache and relationships gone bad – they sang the blues. Now, these legends have been brought back to life, both offBroadway in “Lady Day,” and on Broadway in “A Night With Janis Joplin,” bio musicals that recreate the singers’ most famous numbers in semi-concert settings. Both shows are blessed with exceptionally talented performers – Dee Dee Bridgewater and Mary Bridget Davies, channeling Holiday and Joplin – but their faithful interpretations of the Holiday songbook and the Joplin canon are undermined by mediocre books that don’t serve them or their shows well. Bridgewater, a three-time Grammy winner (most recently in 2010 for her Billie Holiday tribute album) who also won a Tony for “The Wiz,” has been committed to this work since the mid-1980s when she starred in an earlier incarnation in London, and she has the vocal and acting chops to channel Holiday brilliantly. “Lady Day” is based on a concert Holiday gave in London in November 1954 at the end of a European tour. A run-in with the law resulted in the suspension of her cabaret license in the States, and Holiday had

been in involuntary exile, performing throughout Europe. The first act opens with her four-man combo (led by musical director Bill Jolly) vamping and complaining about the jazz legend who is hours late for their rehearsal. When she arrives, offering far-fetched excuses, they run through thrilling renditions of such A Night With classics as “A Janis Joplin Foggy Day (in London Town),” “Miss Brown To You,” and “Strange Fruit.” While not sounding exactly like Holiday, Bridgewater captures her vocal stylings, timbre, and aching melancholy. Unfortunately, in between the marvelously performed songs, author/director Stephen Stahl saddles Bridgewater with clumsily written flashbacks as Holiday reminisces about her unhappy childhood and feelings of abandonment by her mother. And Bridgewater must reenact (in a child’s voice) Holiday’s horrific rape at the age of 10, as well as her initiation into heroin use. The second act recreates the actual concert as a progressively drunken Holiday – in a gorgeous white gown and furs – rambles on about her troubles and attacks the audience in between delivering smashing renditions of “God Bless The Child,” “Good Morning Heartache,” “Ain’t Nobody’s Business, and “I Can’t Get

Started.” David Ayers and Rafael Poueriet have thankless roles as Holiday’s patient manager and assistant stage manager. “A Night With Janis Joplin,” written and directed by Randy Johnson, delivers just what the title promises – another Baby Boomer tribute show – this time for diehard fans of the late psychedelic blues-rock icon. The inexhaustible Mary Bridget Davies, an explosive dynamo who has been touring the country with this show and starred in the earlier bio-musical “Love, Janis,” brings the house down channeling Joplin’s distinctive hoarse wail and emphatic body language. Too bad the concert is interrupted by sanitized (and drug-free) confessional ramblings about Joplin’s middle-class childhood and family life in Port Arthur, Texas, and her need to sing the blues to honor and emulate the singers who inspired her. To give the hard-driving Davies a respite, some of her inspirations – Bessie Smith (portrayed by Taprena Michelle Augustine), Etta James (Nikki Kimbrough), Aretha Franklin (Allison Blackwell), Nina Simone, and Odetta (De’Adre Aziza) – perform their signature songs. This gifted quartet also backs up Davies as The Joplinaires. In hippy bell-bottoms and psychedelic flowing tops (spoton costumes by Amy Clark), on a concert stage circa 1970, the wild-haired Davies gives fullthrottled performances of Joplin hits “Down On Me,” “Piece Of My Heart,” “Spirit In The Dark” (a rousing duet with Blackwell’s Aretha Franklin), “Cry Baby,” and “Me And Bobby McGee.” – Jane Klain

usician/songwriter Judith Owen and her husband, actor and humorist Harry Shearer, will send up the season with their annual “Holiday Sing-Along” tour with special guests Teddy Thompson, Alice Ripley, and others on Saturday, December 7 at 9 pm at The Brooklyn Academy of Music. Admission is free for this unique event. The duo will provide holiday music, mirth, and guest performances from their friends. With a circle of friends this expansive, anyone can show up; past guests have included Owen's close friend and collaborator Richard Thompson, Christopher Guest, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Jane Lynch, Keb' Mo', Loudon Wainwright III, and Fountains Of Wayne. Geared toward Christmas lovers and Scrooges alike, the "Holiday Sing-Along" grew out of the Christmas gatherings Owen and Shearer (“The Simpsons,” Spinal Tap, “Saturday Night Live”) hosted around their family piano, and the tour continues to reflect the same intimate, anything-goes spirit. The show is divided into two acts; the first features performances by Owen, Shearer, and their cast of guests, each of whom picks two holiday songs of their choice – selections range from sentimental ("Winter Wonderland," "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas") to irreverent ("F&*k Christmas," "Jesus Was a Dreidel Spinner").

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings Directed by Alan Taylor Walt Disney Pictures We thought it, too: Our first thought after looking at the fine actor playing Thor, Chris Hemsworth, was probably what a lot of people thought – at least if they were raised on the 1960s Thor cartoons: “Shouldn't he be a lot bigger – and where's the helmet?” Okay, old timers, put those worries to rest; after two pictures, it's safe to say that the Thor franchise of the entire Marvel universe of movies might be the best of them all, as they're certainly the best-acted. Our first questions with all these superhero films, from Thor to Green Lantern remain: Is it true to the original comic book? Despite the violence inherent in comics, does the film manage to not go over the line, and does it detail what’s right and wrong? Thankfully, this film is a resounding yes to those questions. Thor: The Dark World manages to be both a follow-up to not only the 2011 Thor film, but to last year's Marvel's The Avengers as well. This time, the super villain Malekith, the leader of some quite nasty elves, has plans to rearrange the universe to his own liking. Now, it's up to Thor and, believe it or not, Loki – yeah, the head case villian and brother of Thor from the two aforementioned films – to conquer the evildoers and save not only the earth, but their high-in-the-sky homeland of Asgard. Dumb stuff, of course, but fun dumb.

Hemsworth is quite unlike the orignal comic book Thor – he's capable of coming up with a smart, funny line, something the tight-assed original Thor never once did – and Tom Hiddleston's quirky Loki might be the best character of any of the Marvel films to date. A nice addition is the radiant Natalie Portman as Thor's love interest, Jane Foster, who manages to not be the usual sort of whiny, helpless girlfriend character that's usually in the comic books – in fact, Portman's Jane Foster and Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts in the Iron Man films are smart, brave, independent women, quite unlike their original 1960s characters.

The short but sweet synopsis: The special effects are wonderful (although the entire film has the usual dark pallor that affects so many GCIladen productions); the characters are attractive and fun; and there's so much BAM! POW! BOOM! that it becomes almost dizzying. The best part is that you'll feel like you got your $11 worth upon leaving the theater. In 2013, comic book films and animated features are the highest quality movies you'll find in any mallplex. And unlike the 1960s, they beat the tar out of junk like the movie version of TV’s Batman and Alakazam The Great any day. – Cody Bell

t was hard not to Robinson chuckle when the story Cano about the New York Mets’ “secret” dinner with Robinson Cano and his management team came to light. It’s obvious that the Mets cannot afford Cano, and I had doubts that they could even afford to take his reps out to a decent restaurant. The scuttlebutt is that CAA, led by front man Jay-Z, actually bought the Mets dinner. Score one for Jeff Wilpon. The Mets once again diplayed their pennypinching ways when they decided not to match the Colorado Rockies’ $2.5 million offer to retain free agent relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins. This had to have been demoralizing news for Mets fans, considering the fine job that Hawkins did last year. It’s not as if the Mets’ bullpen is full of potential setup men and closers. One former Mets executive told me that he couldn’t believe that they wouldn’t pony up what is chump change by MLB standards to keep a guy who not only performed well, but was a mentor in the clubhouse to young players, was one of the rare leaders on a Mets team bereft of leadership, and a go-to guy for sportswriters. I was saddened to learn of the passing of Major League Baseball Players Association executive

director Michael Weiner, who succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 51. I frequently ran into Michael on the #7 train on the way to Citi Field, where he would meet with both Mets players and those on the visiting team. It was indicative of the down-to-earth man that he was that he eschewed a limo in favor of using the subway. He also valued the opinions of those of us from smaller media outlets as much as he did those who were from major publications and networks. One of Weiner’s last acts was helping arguably the most famous member of his rank-and-file, Alex Rodriguez, prepare his defense against a 211-game suspension by MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. Former Atlanta Braves outfielder and Falcons defensive back Brian Jordan was one of the luminaries at the annual Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association event that raises funds for youth baseball clinics. Having played two professional sports, Jordan certainly has a unique vantage point to comment on the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin hazing process. “I was in a lot of clubhouses and locker rooms, and I never

Freeman's Fine: Congratulations to Dennis Freeman of Glendale for proving that “lighter can be righter” by winning the LIGBT tournament at AMF Plainview on November 10. Freeman won his first LIGBT trophy with a 254 handicap game shot with a 13 pound ball. While Freman earned $1,000 by finishing with four strikes in a row, Ron Moskow of Huntington took home $500 by finishing second with a 229. Third place went to 15year-old Scott Kampf of Levittown with a 226 worth $250; fourth place went to Daniel Goldberg of Douglaston, who was seeded into the final shootout with a 772 high series of the day, earning $225 with a 218. The final spot in the shootout went to Andrew Mienkiewicz of Plainview, who won $200 with a 206 rolling in his home house. The AMF Plainview tournament attracted a crowd of 77 entries, and paid out $4,635. The author goes into great detail about how wrestling played up ethnic stereotypes to attract and enrage fans right up through the late 1980s, yet it was an endeavor that attracted a lot of minority athletes such as Bobo Brazil, Ernie Ladd, and Pedro Morales. While Shoemaker spends a lot of pages discussing WWE superstars Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, he does not ignore lesser grapplers such as S.D. Jones, whose job was to lose (and he did that well), as well as one of my all-time favorites, “Ravishing” Rick Rude,” whom Shoemaker describes as “a preening narcissist in the ring.”

ryan Adams, who ranks with Rush, Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, and Neil Young among the most successful rock performers ever to hail from Canada, will make a rare area appearance as he brings his “Bare Bones” tour to Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville on Thursday, December 12 at 8 pm. Tickets are at ticketmaster.com. Adams is currently on the road with his “Bare Bones” tour in support of his new CD, Bryan Adams – Bare Bones. The 20-cut disc was released on November 16 in the U.S. and Canada. Recorded on the road in the spring of this year, Bare Bones came about in response to fans requesting a CD of the songs they’d just heard – stripped down, raw, unplugged – the way they had originally been created. The resulting CD is a window into the sold-out highly acclaimed tour that Bryan has interspersed with full band stadium dates over the past few years.

The appropriately titled New is not going to make anyone forget Band On the Run, but “Queenie Eye,” “Save Us,” and the title track prove that McCartney is not too old to rock out. Much has been made of the formation of this new blues “supergroup” and the news it has made in the genre in the scant few months that its been on the scene – but the fact of the matter is that this simply is the product of three immensely talented friends who made a rocking, loose album simply because they wanted to. Plainly put, Stephen Stills hasn't sounded this good (particularly vocally) in years. His reading of “Don't Want Lies” features some shockingly emotive singing, and his raw guitar playing stands up well next to the flashier and younger Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who manages to make some blues chestnuts (“Honey Bee,” “Talk To Me Baby”) sound fresh. One can accuse Katy Perry of being lightweight, but she obviously wouldn't have it any other way. Her bent for concentrating on catchy hit singles has already propelled her into the all-timem upper stratosphere in terms of record sales (her last album contained that rarest of feats, four consecutive #1's), and this new effort seems to be on the same path – “Roar” already shot to the top spot on the charts, as did this album upon its release. Amazingly, Perry seems to be toning things down while others (the always naked Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, to name two) always ratchet up the sex quotient. Wonder of wonders, Perry's more serious “Unconditionally” sounds like a mega-hit, but so do the silly “This Is How We Do” and “International Smile.” Perry might be the current

Cancellations and schedule changes always seem to cause controversy on TV – even in the boonies. For years, a polka dance program called “The Big Joe Show” ranked as one of the most popular on the RFD TV syndicated network (which formerly ran Don Imus' weekday morning simulcasts before the program was picked up by the Fox Business Network). “Big” Joe – better known as Joe Siedlik – has starred on his own traveling polka music program for years, usually featuring a different band on each program, along with dozens of area polka dancers spinning around huge dance floors in armorys and VFW halls. The show is utterly quaint and has a huge following in rural areas, but what was described in press accounts as simply “a disagreement” a couple of years back forced Joe from RFD-TV. However, the always enterprising “Big Joe” is now offering more than 150 of his programs on a subscription basis on his new “Big Joe Family Shows” streaming network, available on Roku and other streaming devices. “Big” Joe is also hoping to put his show back on the road as soon as possible.This is the beauty of the digital age: Nothing ever has to be out of print, and nothing ever is Beck Bennett really cancelled if you don't want it to be. Even an enterprise such as “Big” Joe's polka hours – as rudimentary a program as you'll find – can stay around and perhaps even gain in popularity. Bennett is a sure bet for bigger and better things in the future … Speaking of the 1970s, the EPIX cable network recently aired Filthy Gorgeous, a documentary on Penthouse Magazine founder and publisher Bob Guccione, whose work in the men's sophisticate genre (okay, nudie magazines) will likely never be topped. The film reveals Guccione as a multi-faceted individual who was not only a lover of photography but of film and fine art as well … It surprised virtually no one when NBC canceled a bad idea gone wrong (a new version of “Ironside” featuring Blair Underwood) and a lame new comedy series, “Welcome To The Family.” In the latter's case, it's the most unimaginative title the network could have thought of, way too close to “Modern Family,” “Family Ties,” you name it … No question about it: The upcoming December 5 NBC production of “The Sound Of Music” with Carrie Underwood, Laura Benanti, and Audra McDonald is the exact opposite – a quality family event with a truly outstanding cast. Underwood, in Laura particular, may change her entire career Benanti in one night, as she's clearly destined for Broadway greatness ... David Diamante, the PA announcer for Brooklyn Nets games at Barclays Center, is utterly bush league. Best known for his boxing ring announcing, Diamante orgasmically shreiks out Nets’ baskets like John Sterling on steroids, but makes barely audible, dull, sullen calls when the opposing team dares to score. However, in a sports era when Mike Francesa lobs softballs at a grandstanding Alex Rodriguez, what more can we expect? It’s all show, not substance, and more of the dumbing down of pro sports culture.

Legendary former Mountain guitarist Leslie West chose to re-track the classic song "Long Red" for his October 29 solo release Still Climbing. His motive was to reclaim as his own one of the most sampled rock tracks in the history of hip hop. Originally released on Mountain's self-titled album (1969), the song has found a renewed relevance with consistent usage year after year on platinum recordings. Some of the artists who have sampled the track include Jay-Z on 2003's The Black Album with "99 Problems," De La Soul with 2004's The Grind Date with "Verbal Clap," The Game's 2006 album Doctor's Advocate with "Wouldn't Get Far," and 2007's Finding Leslie West Forever from Common with "The People." Recently, Lana Del Rey sampled West's voice saying "Louder" on the title track of Born To Die, while ASAP Rocky's massive hit "Ghetto Symphony" from Long Live ASAP samples "Long Red." On the steady usage of the track throughout the past two decades and continued relevance today, West simply shares, "In 1969, when I wrote the song, there was no hip hop."
