THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET

By Rich Branciforte

Arby’s Really Does Have The Meats

Friends who have followed my eating habits over the years have come to the same, unfortunate conclusion: They're really not great. I never saw a Chinese buffet that didn't beckon me, I'm a ghoul for burgers, and can't pass up fast food. That's why, after years of shying away from eating contests, I wound up entering the Arby's East Meadow Meat Mountain eating contest. Because it was there! I had visited the recently opened new location in East Meadow and was delighted that one of my favorite sandwich places had moved closer to home base. Although I enjoy the jaunt to Bellmore or Fresh Meadows, this was within shouting distance of the Good Times office. I was there to sample the bourbon brisket item; in this case, went with The Triple Stack, roast beef and double brisket topped with delicious sugar cured bacon. We replaced the turkey with the double brisket. It was delicious. The brisket really tasted like brisket, not some food chain’s idea of it. And of course, we had the delicious curly fries. That’s when I noticed the flyer on the wall for the challenge.

It was a contest to see who could devour the secret menu item, The Meat Mountain, the fastest. I did my homework, and saw that the 23-ounce behemoth contained some of every meat they serve. That mean, the sandwich contained chicken tenders, ham, corned beef, smoked brisket, angus steak, roast beef, bacon, and cheddar and swiss cheese. Showtime: I showed up an hour early to scout the competition. Not

bad: Two women, and two guys named “The Handyman” and “The Hungryman.” I'm not a speed eater, but it seemed doable. The prize was dinner for two for a week. The sandwiches came out, we went into battle mode, and the race was on. The sandwich was absolutely delicious; the meat was tender and very tasty. I split it in half to make it easier to eat. I didn't win; Handyman won easily, but I was more into savoring the meal, although the Arby's gang kept prompting everyone not to slow down. After the event, I spoke to Scott, the manager, and Brian, one of the owners. I told them that I thought this was the best Arby's around. Brian said the reason was simple and explained that they use

fresh ingredients and cook them fresh; that makes the taste stand out. The staff was really pleasant, something you don't always find in a fast/casual spot. In all, a winning event at one of my favorite places. Stop by and say hello to the boys, and be aware: The Meat Mountain is from their secret menu and you have to ask for it at the register. The price? A mere $10, well worth it for this giant. My regret? The next time, I won't go to a Chinese buffet for lunch. Just kidding! I think I could have knocked off at least three of these big boys if there was no time limit. Congrats to Jason The Handyman on his big win. But watch out, man, I'm on a roll ...

The New York Mets have to accept the fact that David Wright will resume baseball activity, followed by his having to stall his efforts because of what will be termed “expected unexpected setbacks,” for the next three years.

SportsBeat With Lloyd Carroll

However, it's hard to blame Wright and Mets ownership for this situation. The third baseman would love to get back on the field, but it seems unlikely given both his spinal stenosis and his neck vertebrae issues, not to mention his new shoulder troubles. No one can expect him to announce his retirement and forfeit the remaining three years on his contract. The team's management has to keep up the charade that Wright will one day play again in order to collect sizable insurance proceedings on his guaranteed contract, which would otherwise be a worse financial albatross than it already is. Wright worked his butt off in rehab to try to buck the seemingly insurmountable odds so that the insurer,

whichever company that may be, is in no position to try to cancel the Mets’ policy. It was ironic that the only Mets veteran with an expiring contract who general manager Sandy Alderson did not trade was infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, the only player to go public with a request to be traded. Cabrera was upset when he was asked to vacate his shortstop position in favor of prospect Amed Rosario. While attention will be understandably be focused on the young shortstop and first baseman Dominic Smith during this season’s waning games, it will also be crucial for catcher Kevin Plawecki to prove that he is a bona fide

major leaguer and not a 2011 first-round draft bust. I had to chuckle when Alderson touted that relief pitcher Jacob Rhame, who he acquired from the Dodgers in the deal for outfielder Curtis Granderson, “throws very hard.” This may sound cynical, but these days I assume that the vast majority of young pitchers throw hard. Alderson’s boast would be the equivalent of Best Buy boastfully Rich Gannon advertising that they sell color television sets. One of the few upbeat stories of the second half of the Mets’ season has been the surprising performance of starting pitcher Rafael Montero, a perennial disappointment for the organization because of his poor control. His wildness has been the key reason why he has shuttled between the Las Vegas 51s and the Mets so often. At the recent CBS NFL Media Day, analyst Rich Gannon said that while the New York Jets Photos: PBA winners courtesy PBA, LLC

throughout the country, and continues to grow and expand. “Although we’ve long known about the great things BVL does to brighten the lives of America’s veterans, we decided that on the occasion of their 75th anniversary it was time to launch a targeted collective campaign amongst all our pro shops and our online offerings,” stated BowlersMart owner Cliff Barnes. are not playoff bound, they may not be as awful as many are predicting. He is a fan of new offensive coordinator John Morton, who he worked with as a player for The Oakland Raiders. Gannon believes that QB Josh McCown has more talent than naysayers claim, but concedes that McCown can’t do much with below-par receivers. The loss of wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for the season definitely hurts. Gannon and studio co-host Bill Cowher both like the Jets defense, particularly rookie safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Moye, and that factor should make the Jets competitive in most games. Conversely, there is no way the defense can play well if they don’t get off the

field during games; too many Jets drives last season were three downs and out – it seemed as if the punter was on the field more than QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. CBS Sports CEO Sean McManus has always been known for his candor, and he didn’t sugarcoat the fact that he is frustrated with the Jets’ direction. New York is obviously the biggest televison market; prior to the Rex Ryan years, the Jets were a ratings underachiever for CBS, and things have gone back to the bad old days under Todd Bowles. McManus made it clear that the Jets are as atrocious as many predict that it will have a corrosive effect on both NFL ad rates as well as the Sunday ratings for Jets games on WCBS-TV. There is a famous Chinese proverb: “Be careful what you wish for because it sometimes comes true.” For years, the NFL’s broadcasting partners, Fox and CBS, clamored for an NFL team in Los Angeles since it’s the second largest American market. Unfortunately, neither of LA’s two teams, the Rams or the Chargers (who have just relocated from San Diego), appears likely to be playing in a

Super Bowl in the foreseeable future. “Los Angeles football fans have gotten used to seeing the best games televised into their homes, and now they are going to have mostly Rams and Chargers games,” McManus told me. Given the year-round beautiful Southern California weather, McManus is right to be concerned about whether Los Angelenos will tune out if both of those two franchises stink this season. The Long Island Nets of the NBA’s G League will kick off their season November 4 at The Nassau Coliseum when they take on The Fort Wayne Mad Ants. Season tickets and individual game tickets are now on sale. Thoroughbred racing has returned to Belmont Park after The New York Racing Association’s traditional summer sojourn to Saratoga.

The FallÕs Hottest Comedy Event: Funny Has No Expiration Date

aul Anthony – the comedy impresario and standup star whose Long Island Comedy organization has become an area tradition, particularly with The Long Island Comedy Festival – is a funny and naturally likeable guy, but one day he looked around the comedy landscape and decided he didn't like everything that he saw going on, and he was intent on doing something about it. “I work with comedy on a lot of different levels,” said Anthony, explaining what his newest brainchild, The 50+ Comedy Tour, is all about; the events begin on September 30 at The BroadHollow Theatre at BayWay Arts Center in East Islip. “Some of the comedians on the Long Island Comedy Festival's yearly summer tours are either turning 50 or are past that point, and they've all been Stevie established GB headliners in their own right. After having a lot of conversations with these comedians, I'm finding out that a lot of them aren't working as much as they used to. A lot of the comedy clubs gravitate to a younger crowd, to sell them drinks and nachos and things like that. Yet, I see these same older comics just go out and kill every time they hit the stage … We're trying to get away from the stigma of once you're in the your fifties, you're not operating at the level you used to – as far as I'm concerned, these performers are still in their

primes.” Recent performances of the Long Island Comedy Festival have borne that out. Audiences at some of the area's top showplaces, such as Madison Theater at Molloy College in Rockville

Bill McCarty

Center, Theater Three in Port Jefferson, and The Gold Coast Arts Center in Great Neck have seen stellar sets by veteran stars such as Rich Walker, Stevie G.B., Tom Daddario, Carie Karvavas, Robin Fox, Bill McCarty, and other masters of the mic, who have left Carie audiences of Karavas all ages rolling in the aisles. In that light, everything about The 50+ Comedy Tour – which Anthony hopes to expand into a regional touring show as well as in Long Island – will be first-rate, using only theaters such as these to bring the comedy to fans in a comfortable environment. “Our comedians have done it all; some have opened for a lot of top names from (Jerry) Seinfeld to (George) Carlin,” explained Anthony, whose opening sets often set the tone for the mirth that's about to unfold. “We're taking it all back to a theater format – every one of these comedians is a headliner in his or her own right. Everyone gets equal time.” If you're a comedy fan, you don't have to have salt-and-pepper hair or a limp to enjoy these shows; funny is funny, and Anthony is promising some of the best lineups he's yet assembled. Waistlines may spread and skin may sag, but the funny bone never ages. That being noted, these are shows that shold appeal to anyone who simply wants to get out and laugh. “The shows are a lot of fun,” said Anthony, who seemed as excited about this tour as any that he's worked on. “We really do package these shows so they'll appeal to that older

demo – not a lot of profanity or blue material. These folks are pros, and they understand who their audience is. The audience is just absolutely loving that these comedians are really speaking to them on all topics – politics, health care, the economy, everything that's going on. That's why the shows work.” For more information and advance tickets for these enjoyable (and affordable) comedy events, log on to 50pluscomedy.com. Eli Moscovitz Of In Focus Eyewear: LI’s ‘Rocktician’

What do Buddy Holly, Elton John and Eli Moscovitz have in common? You guessed it: They're all musicians who wore glasses. Except, in Eli's case, it's quite a bit more than that. Eli is also a Licensed Optician and Contact Lens Fitter, and owns In Focus Eyewear in Albertson, a sanctuary for those who want to escape from the big box stores and get quality eyewear at great prices. Eli is truly animated, I can say this honestly as someone who has now spent several hours in his store. Mention any topic to him, either about music or eyewear and it gets him going on a trip of fascinating stories and anecdotes that are a pleasure to listen to. For example: Bet you didn't know that Buddy Holly wore two styles of glasses, and he started

to wear the ones with the thick plastic frames as a stage prop. Hank Marvin of The Shadows wore the same kind of glasses, and this look influenced many of the British bands of the ’60s and

’70s. Ever hear of Elton John? The man was known to have a few sets of glasses, some that

have gone for thousands of dollar at auction. Fast forward to the groovy 1960s, and think of Janis Joplin or Roger McGuinn wearing their glasses as a fashion statement on stage. The ’60s were when wearing glasses went from nerd to cool nearly overnight. Everyone wanted to be part of the counter culture, and wearing glasses was definitely COOL! Eli, who has worn glasses since he was a young boy, realized that eyeglasses had morphed into something cool, and now were considered a fashion accessory. He also realized that he wanted to bring his fascination with eyewear into his business life, went to school, and became an optician in the ’80s. His love for music

also crossed over into his professional life. Eli is an accomplished performer in the Rolling Stones tribute band Streetfighter, which has performed since the late ’70s. Eli worked for someone else for 29 years, where he built up a cult following from those who wanted someone who truly cared about both their health and eyewear in the same way that someone trusts their doctor or dentist. Eli opened In Focus Eyewear with the belief that customers want an optician who knows their entire history, someone who is familiar with you. Meanwhile, eyeglass manufacturers were coming out with more and more stylish glasses, and even those who didn't need glasses wanted them. The sunglass business also skyrocketed as companies poured money into the cool “beach look.” Eli forged the two into a popular spot which became a “happening”

destination. And at the base was still the belief that relationships are important, and that combining fair prices with great service would be a winner. And boy, was he right! In Focus Eyewear has flourished, catering to all ages from young kids through teens and college students up to the geriatric set. And there's something for everyone here. The store has vintage display cases filled with a large selection of styles. The Bruce Of Windsor Project: Lording Over Area Charts Shortly after its release, The Bruce of Windsor Project's new album, We Are One, captured a wealth of listens on the ReverbNation webiste, scoring as high as #3 on its Rock charts for the New York metro and Long Island areas, according to the group. As of press time, the BOWP has remained in the Top 40 of most listened-to indie artists in the New York metro area on the service. “This is a result of the listening fan base,” wrote the Hempstead-based group founder Bruce David Loeffert in an email letter to fans. “So, thanks to you and all the music fans that support independent artists like myself. The Bruce of Windsor Project is slowly getting more and more listeners. As we all know, the music business is super competitive and unpredictable ... Songwriters like myself often go unrecognized for years but then when least suspected with a little luck get recognized by a major publisher or promoter. That is the hope of most songwriters and recording artists.” Learn more about the group and hear tracks at reverbnation.com/

TV, but guess what? Now everyone does that, and there's nothing special about With Jimi LaLumia you anymore. Here's an idea: How Taylor-Made Retorts: “Battle about programming music videos records” are nothing new in pop and concerts again, now that the music, and became an art form unto YouTube videos that hurt you when themselves once hip hop established they were new don’t sting quite as its ongoing dominance. Yet, it's all bad. That honeymoon is over now, been going on for decades: Who can forget John Lennon penning "How Do and I'll bet people will return for actual music on MusicTV – and then, You Sleep" about Paul McCartney, perhaps, the VMAs, your showcase and Sir Paul responding with the and crown jewel, might get the life incredibly successful "Silly Love support that it needs to survive. My best regards Marc Bolan of T.Rex, and a favorite to you and your "TRL" reboot – and please make it about music, not selfies; that would be so last decade. Becker's Legacy: Yet another RIP, this time for Walter Becker of Steely Dan. I saw the group perform at Max's Kansas City in the early 1970s, when "Reelin 'In The Years" was a new hit record. Needless to note, they went on to dominate that decade, and then some. More on legends: There's a new book, Lou Reed: A Life, by Anthony DeCurtis, and it's quite the page turner, very much on the money, and impossible to put down once you start delving in. All sides of Reed appear – and I saw those various sides, including a combative evening when I brought him to WBAB-FM for a two-hour interview I co-hosted Walter with Joel Martin, and our last, Becker pleasant encounter when I introduced him on stage at The Bowery Ballroom, and brought punk faceoff was "New York" by The a tear to his eye in a conversation Sex Pistols, which was answered back stage. None of which appears with "London Boys" by Johnny Thunders. Should we be surprised that the omnipotent Taylor Swift has come back with "Look What You Made Me Do" for Katy Perry, Kanye West, and the rest? I'm not; I love the record and the video, and I love that she has shaken up the recently sleepy pop scene with this “call out." Brava! As for me? "Slander my name at Max's. Call the gang at Punk Magazine..." ("Mangle Me," 1978, the second Psychotic Frogs 7' single). Dear MTV: Time for an open letter: Hi, MTV; just dropping a line, as I read that this year's VMA's were the lowest rated in the show's history. Were you surprised by this? It's mind boggling; Video Music Awards on a channel where music is now an afterthought (except for spinoff and secondary channels that no one in Anthony's brilliant new book, but watches). Izzy Steve Miller: Bizu Rockin’ Retrospectives

Izzy Gets Cold(play): Bizu’s Big Moment

British artist Izzy Bizu performed a stripped back acoustic set at The Wynwood Yard Miami in late August – with a special impromptu appearance from Coldplay's Chris Martin. The duo performed a song in front of a packed crowd that had gathered for the venue's Reggae Sundays event. Bizu, who recently supported Coldplay on its stadium tour, took to social media to express her thanks to Martin, expressing that the show was "extra special" and shared photos across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. From South West London, the 22-yearold was selected as the 2016 Brits Critics Choice finalist, The BBC’s Introducing Artist of the Year 2016, and chosen as the voice of the 2016 Euros.
