Long live the King … Long live CLFMA

This month, on May 6th, 2023, we celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the United Kingdom) and 14 other Commonwealth realms.

With long service as the Prince of Wales, and the access that has given him to all aspects of society, he comes to the throne with a comprehensive understanding of not only UK life and global affairs but an appreciation of agriculture in particular. In fact, it is likely he is the most informed King to come to the throne in history.

For example, he founded The Prince's Trust in 1976, sponsors The Prince's Charities and is a patron, president, or member, of over 800 other charities and organisations.

Besides being an advocate for the conservation of historic buildings and architecture, he is an environmentalist and supports organic farming along with the prevention of climate change and has a healthy opposition towards genetically modified foods.

He has a keen interest in farming and food production and will not only be valued by the UK agricultural industry but appreciated by farming communities everywhere.

In my region, King Charles III became president of what was then the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester (which was granted university status in 2013), some 40 years ago in 1982 - the same year I arrived in the UK. He follows on from Royal connections with the university that date back to Queen Victoria, who granted a royal charter to the then college in 1845. Sovereigns have been patrons ever since, visiting the university in every reign.

We as a magazine are fortunate to have not only the University on our doorstep - with its strong global contributions to agriculture - but also to witness this month the coronation of a head-of-state who is keenly interested in all forms of food production. Long live the King!

Our event reports

There is a comprehensive range of topics in this edition which will please all our readers. Besides our regular sections and features I would like to draw your attention to our events section. Our Global Group President, Darren Parris, attended the 127th IAOM Conference and Exposition in Minneapolis, MN in the USA from April 17-21, 2023. It’s great to get a brief report into this edition.

And by the way, we feature IAOM in our regular Mill Training section and look at its Correspondence Course set up for flour milling that has no particular start date but offers eight units for completion, which can be taken at times to best suit the student.

In that section we also carry information on Bühler Group’s two-week on-site Wheat Milling for Operators Course which takes place in Uzwil, Switzerland from August 28 - September

08, 2023 in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish - other languages are available on request.

You’ll find our focus on events in this edition also covers VIV Asia 2023.

The Build MyFeedmill Conference which was held during Victam Asia 2023 in mid-March included some 10 quick-fire presentations that highlighted the latest equipment now available to the feed industry and about which presenters had limited time to spell out the advantages of each.

The saving of energy was a common thread throughout these presentations. Don’t overlook our Product Focus section which highlights other equipment that will prove useful in milling processes.

There is a second focus highlighted in our event’s section and that is on aquaculture and aquatic feeds.

Manufacturing aquatic feeds is a specialist area of feed production and the 7th Annual Aquafeed Extrusion Conference, hosted the day prior to the opening of the VIV Asia 2023 in Bangkok attracted over 60 delegates.

Our sister publication, International Aquafeed, hosted the event with VIV and moderated by Dr Mian Riaz who is the head of the extrusion technology programme at Texas A&M University, in the USA. Our report covers the highlights of all the critical areas of feed production covered but is one of those conferences that being present and engaged delivers greater benefits.

Similar courses will be held in VIV MEA 2023 in Abu Dhabi UAE from November 20-22.

This edition will be the third for this important and growing regional event which was disrupted as were many other events by the Covid Pandemic in 2021-22.

You’ll find towards the back of the edition the Victam Insights Newsletter that again highlights aquaculture - this time in Latin America when this global event organiser is planning its first VictamLatam event from October 3-5, 2023 in São Paulo, Brazil. We finish off the edition with our Market Place (which all companies offering equipment into the global milling sector should be appearing in along with our Milling Directory which was published in April 2023).

Finally, we come to our interviewee of the month - Suresh Deora, who is the new chairman of the Compound Livestock Feed Manufacturers Association (CLFMA) of India.

This is an association that oversees the production of feed for livestock which in turn supports the country that has just taken over the mantel of being the most populated country on the planet at 1.427 billion inhabitants – overtaking China on 1.426 bilion.

These figures each represent one-sixth of the world’s population and will continue to grow; combined, one-third of the world’s total population.

Providing animal feeds for the livestock to meet the demands of India’s non-veg population is a challenge for any organisation. When I visited Mr Suresh Deora, he certainly conveyed confidence and being up to the task of guiding the industry forward. Long live CLFMA!

Greetings my lovely readers and welcome to the May edition of Milling and Grain magazine and the Global Miller. How are you finding Spring? We’re nearing the end of the season now and closing in on Summer so I hope you’ve been using this time wisely and getting all of you spring cleaning in while you can.

Whilst in the Northern hemisphere farmers will be spreading fertiliser for their silage fields for Spring, the Southern hemisphere will be wrapping up their Autumn farming and preparing for Winter. The farmers will be planning their crop rotations and new beds for next spring whilst also planning what winter crops will be planted.

Interview with Aidan Connolly, Agritech Capital

President of Agritech Capital, Aidan Connolly, talks to Roger Gilbert about his new book, ‘The Future of Agriculture’, whilst at this year’s 2023 IPPE Exhibition which was held over three-days in Atlanta, Georgia, USA from January 24-26, 2023.

His book covers a comprehensive range of topics in agriculture, including chapters on aquaculture, grains, pigs and poultry, robotics, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, the metaverse, insect and vertical farming, as well as meat/ milk/egg alternatives.

His main takeaway from writing this book is that the innovation we need is taking place in small companies.

He says it is vital to engage, encourage and find ways to facilitate these companies, as it’s critical for the feed and milling business that these technologies come to market.

Farmers in the Southern hemisphere will be checking their fruit trees too; cutting out the old wood in berry trees to allow new cranes to emerge and picking all the stone fruit to remove any harbouring insects while preventing disease. Young citrus plants should also be protected when the weather turns chilly too.

In the UK here, the NHS after multiple strikes, have accepted a deal from the Government for a one-off payment of 2 percent of members' salaries plus a Covid recovery bonus of 4 percent for the financial year 2022/23, along with a 5 percent pay increase for 2023/24. This is an incredible bonus after the previous offer of a simple one percent pay rise the Government offered back in 2021.

After the last few years, the health care staff who looked after all of us during the pandemic deserve so much more then they’re getting. From the health care assistants to the doctors and nurses to even the administrators and janitors who stayed to help our health care providers deserve some hefty rewards from the Government, not just here in the UK either but all over the world. Definitely something better than some clapping on the streets on a Monday evening.

Some interesting news globally though is that DSM have proved that methane-reducing feed additive Bovaer is ready for roll-out after testing in a large-scale pilot in the Netherlands. Whilst this is happening, Unibio, Wealth Club’s first ever single company Enterprise Investment Scheme announces a $70m deal and BDC Systems Ltd designs and delivers an upgraded grain handling plant following the fire destroying the grain drier in 2021.

The Milling Journal

Milling Journal is a new online publication by Perendale Publishers Ltd., United Kingdom with its distinguished track record of technical and trade magazines in the agricultural, aquaculture and food sciences. This new peer-reviewed scientific journal will serve academia and the commercial milling sectors and related cereal and grain industries with high-quality papers. Milling is at the heart of products for both the human and the animal feed sector. It is envisaged to address fundamental and advanced technologies in the conversion of grain, cereals, pulses and legumes via milling to create diverse and bespoke secondary products. For example, ground wheat, corn, oats, barley, sorghum, beans and peas are widely used for human foods. The downstream by-products of bioethanol and potable alcohol from fermentation of ground grain are notable areas for research findings towards provision of sustainable animal feed ingredients. The Journal will particularly embrace scientific and technical

information on novel processes enabling the generation of ingredients for manufacture of bread, cakes, confectionary, pasta and a plethora of applications for diverse types of breakfast cereals, beverages and the infant formula markets. We also consider papers on complete animal feed manufacture as a core topic. These usually require pre-grinding and milling/flaking of grain and cereals for terrestrial animal feeds such as for poultry, swine, ruminants and equine. Animal feed production can involve drying, milling, pelleting, steam and pressure conditioning, shaping and texturisation dependent on specific machinery. Processes such as extrusion, cooking and expansion are of paramount importance with much research being undertaken on engineering, both mechanical and electrical. Effective storing and preservation methods offer opportunities for papers.

Bovaer® is ready for rollout in the Netherlands

Dutch dairy company Royal FrieslandCampina, DSM, and feed supplier Agrifirm have successfully incorporated Bovaer® into the regular farming activities of 158 dairy farms in the Netherlands in the world’s first large-scale on-farm use of the methane-reducing feed additive for cattle. The six month program, which started in 2022, confirmed that Bovaer® can easily be introduced at scale without affecting animal health, milk production or milk composition. This work supports the quicker adoption of Bovaer® by the dairy sector, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping the Netherlands to reach its climate targets.

In 2022, history was made by launching an extensive project to gain practical experience with Bovaer®, involving more than 20,000 cows and 158 farms. The successful collaboration between the member dairy farmers of FrieslandCampina, DSM and Agrifirm led to a decrease of 10,000 tons of CO2e in methane emissions (an average of 28 percent less enteric methane emissions). The project’s success also opens the door for Bovaer® to be more easily implemented across the entire Dutch dairy herd. This move towards sustainability in the Dutch dairy industry stands to benefit consumers and farmers alike. Starting this year, farmers that are using Bovaer® in their feed can be recognised for its use through the KringloopWijzer (Annual Nutrient Cycling Assessment), the carbon footprint tool of the Dutch Dairy Sector (ZuivelNL).

Lars van den Nieuwenhof owns a farm with 125 dairy cows with his parents in Someren, North Brabant. He participated in FrieslandCampina’s pilot to reduce greenhouse gases on his farm with Bovaer®. Mr Nieuwenhof says, “As an industry, we are at a tipping point. We have to move along and try to reduce methane emissions. We were therefore eager to participate in this pilot. Moreover, participation is low-threshold and it requires little effort. The Bovaer® is mixed into the minerals we feed to the cows. Every day we mix the minimum dose of 150 grams of those minerals through the ration. We also participated in workshops to exchange experiences with other participants. I am definitely satisfied with the results. The cows are producing well, are healthy, vital and fertile. We will continue to use the feed additive. I am happy that we can make an additional contribution to reducing our impact on the climate.”

Together with André Kleistra, Jelle Heida has a dairy farm with 400 cows in Hoornsterzwaag, Friesland. Like other farmers, they have invested in mono-manure fermentation and a nitrogen stripper and farm in a way that suits them: efficient and environmentally friendly. Jelle says, “I participated in the Bovaer pilot because I was curious whether the feed additive would affect the fermentation process. I did not notice any effect as we added Bovaer to the ration. We also did not observe any changes in the health of our cows or in their milk production and composition. It was an interesting experience in which I learned a lot about how Bovaer

works. I’m very positive that through our participation, we experienced a simple and safe way to further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.”

The successful collaboration between Bovaer® and the member dairy farmers of FrieslandCampina has opened the door for Bovaer® to be implemented across the entire Dutch dairy herd. This move towards sustainability in the Dutch dairy industry will benefit farmers and consumers alike.

Together with its member dairy farmers, FrieslandCampina aims to achieve a 33 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on its member dairy farms by 2030 (vs. 2015). It is therefore working on various solutions to achieve this, such as using guaranteed deforestation-free soy in cattle feed, digestion of manure, generating sustainable energy on farms and reducing cow methane emissions using Bovaer®.

Sanne Griffioen, Director farm sustainability FrieslandCampina, “Together with our member dairy farmers, we are working towards producing net climateneutral dairy by 2050 at the latest. It requires continuous improvement and innovation to reach our targets. We are proud to be the first dairy company in Europe to gain valuable practical experience with Bovaer® on a large scale. I am very happy with the results of the pilot and the feedback from our member dairy farmers. We are looking forward to continue our journey with our partners, clients and members.”

Wealth Club’s first single company investment, Unibio announces US$70m deal

Unibio, which was Wealth Club’s first ever single company Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) offer to its clients in 2017 has announced an investment of c.$70million from the Saudi Industrial Investment Group (SIIG). Unibio has developed technology to convert natural gas (methane) into organic, high quality sustainable protein for the global animal feed market on an industrial scale.

The investment follows the signing of a major licensing agreement with Gulf Biotech in Quatar to produce its product Uniprotein.

Wealth Club clients first invested in Unibio alongside lead investor and adviser West Hill Capital in 2017 at a share price of UK£4. Those who invested in the first tranche will have seen a 2.27x unrealised return on their investment. To date Wealth Club clients have invested UK£2.8 million.

Unibio’s product, Uniprotein is a high-quality and sustainable protein on par with other high-quality proteins such as fishmeal and soy and studies have shown that this increases yield and resistance to disease. For instance, in tests, cattle fed the UniProtein® food yielded 10 percent more milk. In addition, the physical properties of the feed are advantageous in terms of particle size, relevant for good distribution in feeds, storage shelf life and traceability

It has patented technology to convert natural gas such as methane into high quality sustainable protein on an industrial scale. Creating significant amounts of sustainable feed for farm animals and without the waste. It holds 70 percent protein content and is produced with no pesticides and significantly less water than plant-based protein sources. In addition, it does not take up farmland. The company is now developing the product for human consumption.

The US$70million investment will facilitate the rollout of the company’s breakthrough technology to help meet a soaring global demand. The US$70million investment from the Saudi Industrial Investment Group, which values Unibio at c.UK£250million upon completion, is expected to form part of up to US$100million raise that the Board expects to conclude in the coming months.

The Saudi Industrial Investment Group is a leading independent petrochemical company listed on the Saudi Exchange with a market cap of about US$5billion.

Depart and DM Packaging sign agency agreement

Depart which exports spare parts for milling machines and provides after-sales services to more than 80 countries all over the world; expanded its packaging product range by shaking hands with the Italian packaging company DM Packaging.

Alapala Holding’s group company Depart, after milling spare part sales and after-sales services, announced its name in pasta spare parts, telescopic conveyor systems, sorting&rica machines, end of line packaging machines in many industries.

With the agreement signed with Italian DM Packaging, Depart will now carry out sales and marketing activities of primary horizontal/flowpack packaging systems for the food industry specially in bakery, chocolate and confectionery products in many countries especially in Turkey as well as end-of-line packaging machies in the field of packaging.

Depart’s General Manager Cengiz Tiryakioğlu made a statement regarding the agreement; “As Depart; we recently stepped into the packaging field. In our evalutations, we realized that we have achieved a rapid progress during this period. Since we are a company that targets to meet all needs of its customers, we decided to expand Depart packaging solutions.

We agreed and signed an agency agreement with DM Packaging, one of the leading companies in Italy. DM designs and manufactures primary packaging flowpack systems and offers individual solutions to food industry including bakery, chocolate and confectionary.

UK£9.13 million awarded to develop cutting-edge farming technology

Three cutting-edge projects will receive a share of UK£9.13 million in government funding to carry out research and development on proposals to boost agricultural productivity, sustainability and climate resilience, it has been announced.

The funding will support projects developing robotic crop harvesting for horticulture, an autonomous system to change cows' bedding to improve their health, welfare and productivity, and a more environmentally friendly approach to potato cultivation.

The three projects are being supported through the Large R&D Partnership competition, which is part of the government's UK£270 million Farming Innovation Programme, and a second round of the competition is currently open for applications.

This is all part of the government's commitment to spend around UK£600 million on grants to provide support for farmers to invest in productivity, animal health and welfare, innovation, research and development over three years. It will be funded from the UK£2.4 billion annual farming budget, which is being maintained at its current level for the rest of this current Parliament.

Alongside the ongoing roll-out of the Environmental Land Management schemes, the grants will help to deliver long-term sustainable food production and support farmers to halt and reverse the decline of nature as set out in the Environmental Improvement Plan.

Farming Minister Mark Spencer says, “It's important that we fund projects like these – and those still to come in future rounds – as we support farmers to deliver sustainable food production and protect the environment.

“Innovation, research and development will help keep the sector at the cutting edge of technology as we look into the future.”

Successful projects

The Agri-Opencore project, led by APS Produce, has been awarded over UK£3.8m to accelerate the delivery of robotic crop systems for horticulture. With labour shortages affecting the horticulture sector around the world, there are huge opportunities to reduce costs and labour requirements. The funding will help the project create the world's first open development platform (software and hardware) for agri-robotic crop harvesting. The open development platform will enable multiple organisations to contribute, allowing cross-sector collaboration and demonstration of technologies on English farms. It is hoped that the project will help to accelerate the adoption of robotic picking by two years.

The AG ARC project, led by Garnett Farm Engineering, has been awarded over UK£2.5m towards the development of an autonomous cow cubicle bedding unit. Cow comfort is a key factor in reducing the chances of cows suffering from mastitis, a fatal inflammation of their mammary gland, with dry and clean bedding and careful management of cubicles being vital. Currently, this must be done manually by farmers, but this project will develop an intelligent robotic cubicle bedder to monitor and respond to key sensor data to optimise dispensing of bedding. This will help to boost cow health and welfare, improve farm productivity and reduce costs through efficient use of bedding.

The Potato-LITE project has been awarded UK£2,830,000 to explore optimised systems for potato cultivation. Current systems require the soil to be cultivated to create a deep and uniform seedbed, free from stones and clods, to provide a favourable environment for potato growth.

Milling Industry in Shanghai: The Opening of a New Mill, Wah Shing Flour Mills

“A representative of a Shanghai newspaper recently had the pleasure of eating some very delicious cake, which had been wheat in the husk that very same morning”

Milling (20 Dec 1902) reported that the newspaper man quoted above was attending the opening of the Wah Shing Flour Mill on the North Soochow Road, an establishment which was only one of many industry ventures which owed their origins to the enterprise and commercial sagacity of Mr. Chu Lai-Fong, better known as Yuen Chong. No doubt the marked success of his experience of operating two mills in Shanghai inspired Mr. Chu with the idea that there was room for a third. There was luck proverbially in odd numbers and, as he had already a rice mill running on the creek-side and room for a kindred industry, he decided to install an extensive mill grinding wheat. The result was to be his fine new, well-equipped mill.

Visitors at the opening of the mill were conducted over the establishment and had the entire working explained to them by

experts, at the end of which they had a fair idea of the processes the wheat had to undergo before it could be delivered to the baker to make bread. The processes, they were told, involved cleaning and grinding, which required a multitude of elevators, scourers, sieves and rollers, all connected together by a bewildering mass of shaftings and wooden spouts and chutes.

On the ground floor the main line of shafting was fixed on brick pillars, with the required number of double and single elevators. The packing apparatus for the flour, bran and shorts was also on this floor. A staging above the ground floor had been added to the building to accommodate nine sets of double roller mills of neat design.

Above these, on the main floor, were two centrifugals, two rotary sieves, three double purifiers and two scalpers, one for the first and one for the second break. There was also a line of shafting for driving these machines as well as those on the floor above. On this upper floor there where 14 centrifugals of 24in. diameter and 2 and a half sheets in length as well as the flour-

dressing department, where the finished product was transmitted through wooden chutes to the ground floor to be packed.

The machinery in the wheat cleaning department was especially interesting. Great care had been taken in its selection. The apparatus handled the grain by an elaborate system of dry cleansing, a method which had always given the best possible results wherever it had been adopted. The wheat on being delivered into the department from the elevator passed into one of the three bins. From here it was drawn as required on to a magnetic separator where it passed to two scourers then to cock and barley cylinders, after which it was washed and sent along to be treated by an ‘Invincible’ brush, which gave it a final polish.

The entire work of equipping the mill was entrusted to Messrs. Jardine, Matheson and Co., and reflected well on their expertise. The firm was not called upon merely to import the machinery and erect a suitable building to cover it, they had to alter existing buildings, engines and driving apparatus. This proved a difficult

undertaking to suit the flour mill machinery imported.

The entire equipment, machines and accessories came from Messrs. E.R, & F. Turner of Ipswich, whose special expert at that time, Mr. P. Gillen, saw over the installation and starting up of the plant. He had just been in Constantinople to fit out a mill when he set off to China. The mill at Shanghai could turn out 850 bags of finished flour per day. The flour was ‘first class’ in quality and bore the name ‘Flying Horse’.

“Who’s who in China” (China Weekly Review, 1936) records that Mr. Chu Lai Fong was, at the end of the 19th century, Chairman of the Wusih Chamber of Commerce and Director of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai. He came to Shanghai in 1872 establishing a company trading in coal and other minerals. With the profits made, he invested in mills, amassing sufficient capital to also build the Yuen Chong Rice Mill, established in 1888 and later amalgamated with the Shanghai Rice Mill.

Brock Grain Systems expands their manufacturing capability in Sheffield, Iowa

Agroundbreaking ceremony was held on April 5 commemorating the expansion of Brock’s LeMar manufacturing facility in Sheffield, Iowa.

The expansion and workflow reorganisation will help Brock meet the growing demand for the grain sweeps and transport conveyors produced at the plant. It will add nearly 20,000 sq. ft. of space to the facility, providing more room for equipment assembly and allowing drive-through access for shipping and receiving. Connecting all southside buildings will improve production while alleviating weather-related problems with storage and movement of product.

Brock manufactures 1500 Series On-Farm Grain Bin Power Sweeps as well as 3500 Series Electric Sweeps and MAVERIK® 4000 Series Hydraulic Sweeps for the commercial grain market. The plant also produces LeMar® Transport Conveyors used to build grain piles at commercial grain facilities.

John Tuttle, vice president of sales and marketing for Brock Grain Systems, says the expansion will help Brock increase grain bin sweep production from approximately 800 sweeps a year to more than 2,000 sweeps per year.

“This investment will also enhance flow optimisation at the facility to improve employee efficiency and safety,” explained John Stambaugh, vice president and general manager for Brock Grain Systems. “It is part of a multisite improvement plan at Brock manufacturing facilities in Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City, Missouri; and Vincennes, Indiana; to continue to provide reliable inventory for our Brock dealer network and our customers.”

The Brock Sheffield facility currently employs 37 people. The new plant expansion represents a $2.6 million investment in the Central Iowa community of Sheffield and is expected to ultimately add up to 10 jobs to the local economy. Dean Snyder Construction of Clear Lake, Iowa, is overseeing the construction. The expansion is expected to be completed by October of this year.

Egypt all set to boost wheat self sufficiency

The Egyptian Ministry of Finance allocated 45 billion EGP (US$ 1.5B) to purchase local wheat from farmers this year, a step forward in supporting and encouraging farmers to expand the cultivation of strategic crops.

According to Egypt Today, Mohamed Maait, the Finance Minister revealed the grant in a statement, adding that the allocation surpassed last year’s bill by more than 19 billion EGP. He added that the government has stated to buy the local wheat from the beginning of this April to the mid-August, with an additional cost to increase the price of one ardab (150 kilograms) by 74 percent.

Recently, the government cabinet approved new incentives to increase local wheat prices to support local production and reduce the import bill of wheat. According to the decree, the incentives would bring the price of wheat to EGP 1,500 (US$ 48.54) per ardeb (1 ardeb= 150kg), up from EGP 880 (US$16.4).

Egypt has one of the highest per capita consumption of wheat in the world. At 180kg, the country’s per capita is almost thrice the global average. However, the country, which has been a major wheat importer in the world, has been suffering from a crisis of wheat supply from conflicting Russia and Ukraine, the two biggest wheat exporters to Egypt.

Earlier in April month, Egypt signed a grant agreement of €40 million (US$43.5M) with the European Union (EU) in partnership with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) to support the production of wheat in the country. Under the AICSimplemented deal, the AICS will cooperate with the Agriculture Ministry to support the production of wheat and grains with €25 million and complete the information control system of wheat in Egypt with €15 million. The grant comes as part of the 100-million-dollar EU food security support program that was signed with Egypt last year.

International Cooperation Minister Rania Mashat said the deal comes as part of the Egyptian State's efforts in cooperation with bilateral and multilateral international partners to face food security challenges resulting from the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian

conflict in cooperation with bilateral and multilateral international partners.

Talking about efforts taken by Egypt to face food security challenges, she said Egypt had signed many program agreements since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict to secure food, including a 500-million-dollar food security program with the WB and another 271-million-dollar program with the African Development Bank.

According to the recent report by USDA, Egypt’s wheat production for MY 2023/2024 is expected to remain unchanged in 2023-24 at 9.8 million tons, the same as the current year, the USDA said.

Post forecasts Egypt’s wheat consumption in MY 2023/24 at 20.5 MMT, up by almost 2.0 percent from the MY 2022/23 estimate of 20.1 MMT following the increase in food, seed, and industrial use (FSI) consumption due to the increasing population. Therefore, the country has devised raft measures to meet the growing demand in a way that contributes to achieving selfsufficiency.

Wheat imports are expected to fall to 1.05 million metric tonnes from 1.08 million tonnes in the current marketing year; the USDA said in its annual Egypt grain and feed report.

Forecasted imports in 2023-24 are the second lowest over the past decade, with imports of 10.15 million tonnes in 2013-14, it said.

"The decrease is attributed to the economic fallout from the war in Ukraine, which generated an ongoing foreign-currency challenge, causing disruptions for Egypt's wheat trade," the department said.

In the period from July 2022 through February 2023, around 7.4 million tonnes of wheat was exported to Egypt, a 16.7 percent decrease from the same period the prior year, it said. In 2021-22, Russia and Ukraine were the largest foreign suppliers of wheat to the Egyptian market, supplying 4.96 million tonnes and 4.93 million tonnes respectively, the USDA said. However, Egypt has been forced to diversify its sources due to the war in Ukraine, it added.

Grain unloading technology selected for new West African hub port

Bruks Siwertell has secured an order from Senegal Minergy Port SA (SMP) for a high-capacity grain handling Siwertell ship unloader for a new port development, Bargny-Sendou, located near Dakar, Senegal, West Africa.

SMP has been established to undertake the development of the bulk facility, which will be the largest and most sophisticated of its kind in West Africa. The contractor made its analysis for selecting which dry bulk handling system to invest in based on three factors: unloading capacity; unloading efficiency; and environmental impact.

'SMP is a new customer but was aware of Bruks Siwertell's reputation for delivering world-class dry bulk material handling assets, which are efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly,' notes Bertil Andersson, Sales Manager, Bruks Siwertell.

'Grain is the third largest cargo that our machines handle, amounting to around 600 million metric tons every year, so we understand what it takes to ensure the quality of grain shipments and meet high-demand, high-capacity import requirements,' continues Mr Andersson.

'So far, we have been very impressed with Bruks Siwertell's work,' says Alexander Zalocosta, CFO, SMP. 'As well as being technical leaders in the dry bulk handling industry, the project team has been extremely personable throughout the process, showing keen attention to detail and professional rigour, which is second to none.

'Understanding that the success of any ship unloader will depend on the overall efficiency of the port's dry bulk material handling system, Bruks Siwertell's team has taken a hands-on approach to all elements, not just the unloader. This has been extremely useful to us, particularly given how important the successful integration of all elements of the port's material handling system is,' adds Mr Zalocosta.

In addition to minimising any material degradation in grain handling, the low weight of Siwertell technology also ensures specific advantages to this new port development. The Siwertell 640 M-type ship unloader will be installed on a jetty 1,500m from the shore, and so minimising infrastructure weight, reduces the cost of jetty construction.

Around ninety percent of Senegal's trade comes through its current Atlantic Ocean port, the Autonomous Port of Dakar. Growing import and export demands has outstripped the port's capacity and Senegal urgently needs to address this issue.

SMP are looking for the new port to improve environmental protection and act as a major hub for global trade, not only as a gateway to Senegal and its neighbouring countries, but as a hub for the wider West African region as well. Bargny-Sendou will have an initial capacity of 20 million metric tons and will handle 15 million metric tons of commodities in its first year of operation.

The totally enclosed unloader will have a continuous rated grain handling capacity of 1,200t/h, and ensure spillage-free operations with minimal dust emissions. It will be assembled on site under Bruks Siwertell supervision and is planned to commence operations in mid-2024.

The unloader is being financed by the Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN) and the Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK), which only invests in environmentally sustainable enterprises.

IAOM Correspondence Course in Flour Milling

Developed and reviewed by industry experts, the IAOM Correspondence Course in Flour Milling is comprised of eight units encompassing all aspects of flour milling from wheat cleaning, basic milling principles, storage, and grain handling to milled-grain product additives, plant management and mill mechanics. One unit is dedicated to an overview of how to mill other grains.

The Units are divided into lessons, with a testing component at the conclusion of each lesson. The testing option is available online or by hard copy. A certificate is issued on the successful completion of each unit, with a

Buhler Group is running a two-week ‘Wheat milling for operators’ course, that will take place in their Milling Academy in Uzwil, Switzerland.

On the course, you will learn how to make a mill efficient - about basic milling processes, machine design and plant operation. But this isn’t just theoretical training. You spend two days at our fully operational school mill to learn cleaning, conditioning and milling techniques. You also have access to some of the latest milling machines for a close-up look at how they work. You will also learn about lab analysis and cereal science – the science behind different grains,

particularly wheat, everything from intake to the finished product.

The course is designed for shift millers with little to moderate working experience in a flour mill. This course is well-suited for mill operators who are new to milling.

Included in the course are an invitation letter for visa application, hands-on access to some of the latest milling machines, two days of practical experience at our fully operational school mill, printed training documents, unlimited access to Wi-Fi and Internet, and one social event with dinner each course week.

Languages that the course caters for include English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and others on request. The programme is scheduled to run from August 28 to September 8, 2023.

Pre-cleaners by Ottevanger

The pre-cleaners are designed to safeguard the plant equipment against foreign objects. Its ideal application is in the intake line of raw materials shortly after the intake of raw materials. The Ottevanger pre-cleaner seperates pieces of wood, stones, clothes etc. from the mainstream. In general, items that can cause damages to transport – and process equipment. For situations where raw materials may be contaminated with ropes and strings, a proven catching device can be installed.

The cleaner consists of a rotating drum, clad with a mesh screen with holes of 40×40 mm. The material is fed to the inside of the drum. The good material passes the screen and is normally send to an external magnet. The oversized material is transported by flight to the back of the machine and collected in the second outlet.

The inlet section of the machine contains a manually operated bypass valve and is fitted with replaceable wearing plates made of manganese steel.

Premix

It is a paddle mixer which has been designed in order to mix homogeneously raw materials, vitamins, minerals and compounds. Shaft housing have completely dust-proof design. Mixing capability is increased with the mixer is provided with pneumatically actuated butterfly valves and exit of it with the gate placed in the middle of machine. The shaft is driven by horizontal type reducer and belt-pulley system. Mixing (homogenization) is performed to evenly distribute the particles of different sizes and quantities in the mixture. Mixing is one of the factors that directly affect the quality of the pellet. There are two different types of mixing: batch and continuous. While batch mixers vary according to the paddle types and number of shafts, continuous mixers vary only according to the number of shafts. There are two important properties of mixers: the duration and quality of mixing. These properties may vary depending on the desired CV ratio.

Turnhead Distributors by Essmueller

Essmueller designs and builds turnhead distributors for many different material needs. They offer round and flat-back designs in 60°, 50° and 45° slopes and sizes from 6” diameter to 48” diameter with capacity of up to 120,000 bushels per hour. These turnheads are available in manual and electric controls. Our standard model features the (TE) dust tight enclosure or with the (IIG) explosion-proof enclosure per customer request. Electric models can be ordered with our optional “Smart” control package that moves the turnspout in either direction for the shortest route to the selected spout. Holmen

The Holmen NHP200 Series 2, is our flagship pellet durability tester used worldwide for calculating the Pellet Durability Index (PDI) of feed and wood pellets by simulating the pellet transportation environment from mill to trough.

Once a sample of pellets is loaded into the machine it removes any fines, weighs the sample, tests the pellets by agitating them with air at a fixed 70mBar pressure, weighs the remaining sample and calculates the PDI.

This automatic solution removes the chance of human error, providing an accurate and reliable test method. The reduction in human input also allows other tasks to be completed while a test is done, ideal in a busy laboratory or where a wide number of staff carry out the testing. The average test lasts only 4 minutes and the test time is automatically set according to the pellet diameter entered. Suitable for pellets 3mm-12mm diameter.

Alternative ingredients for piglet nutrition

During early life, piglets face many social, environmental, and dietary stresses that can impact their growth performance and increase the risk of digestive disturbances. Finding suitable ingredients for piglet nutrition in this important stage of their life is therefore key.

Feed producers are also faced with rising concerns around the environmental impact of raw materials, greater scrutiny from authorities, present and future price pressures, and logistical and supply issues. This is driving demand for alternative nutrient sources, such as locally produced plant-based alternatives, that can deliver both a good nutritional profile and improved technical properties. Here Karel Thurman, Commercial Director Animal Nutrition at BENEO, discusses how feed producers can use ingredients derived from faba bean and rice - either separately or combined - to support piglet health and growth, helping promote farmer profitability.

Piglet weaning and feed transition impact long term performance

Due to average litter size increases, there has been a reduction in piglet birth weight, with a growing proportion of small piglets (less than one kg birth weight) in large litters. The long-term effects of a low piglet birth weight are higher morbidity and mortality, and lower growth rates. Weaning weight is also an

important influencing factor of post-weaning growth, morbidity and mortality. Notably when farmers practice ‘early’ weaning to achieve a quicker return to oestrus and improve fertility for the sow, piglet weight can be negatively influenced. So, the challenge is how to achieve the best performance for both the sow and her piglets if early weaning occurs.

Like any young animal, piglets are sensitive to digestive disturbances. This is because their digestive tract and immune system are not fully functional and the intestinal microbiota not yet well established. Add to this the environmental stresses and contact with pathogenic organisms and it is no wonder that the switch from sow’s milk to solid pre-starter formula feed can trigger a range of digestive issues, impacting both piglet’s health and long-term performance (e.g., time to slaughter). According to Professor Jana Seifert from the University of Hohenheim, the piglet immune system is not complete until six weeks of age. By this time, it is possible to support piglets’ growth and digestive health by switching them to a feed that is based on rice.

Rice ingredients promote digestibility

Compared to wheat, corn, tapioca and potato, rice has a very small starch granule size (2-8 µm) and presents a neutral taste that is palatable for piglets. The unique granular structure of its starch fraction allows rice flour to be a highly digestible ingredient, making it of particular interest for use in feed for sensitive or young animals such as piglets. While most cereal ingredients are further processed or cooked to gelatinise the

starch and improve their digestibility, the rice flour can either be included raw or cooked, as in both states it is highly digestible. In a digestibility trial, cooked corn was substituted with raw or cooked rice in feed for weaned piglets. The results showed a marked improvement in the average daily feed intake and apparent total tract digestibility for the piglets consuming the rice-based diets. Alongside improved digestibility, the research also showed that replacing corn with rice in piglet diets also significantly improved average daily growth and growth-to-feed ratio. In addition to its starch, rice flour also contains a certain percentage of protein, that is an easily digestible source of plantbased protein with a well-balanced amino acid profile. Rice flour has low ash and fibre levels (maximum 1 percent each). This is important as too high ash levels in feed can degrade its quality and lead to intestinal disturbances.

Faba bean ingredients - locally sourced alternatives with sustainability credentials

ingredients are produced from faba bean varieties which are low in antinutritional factors (e.g., tannins, vicine and convicine) and are guaranteed to be non-GMO.

BENEO’s faba bean range also includes faba bean protein concentrate, which is a concentrated source of vegetal protein that serves as a good alternative to e.g., animal and soy proteins. GENOME BOOST FOR NATUREFRIENDLY PEST CONTROL

New open resource will accelerate research

towards better targeted crop protection

Anew database of 19 insect genomes encompassing some of the most damaging pests of crops worldwide has been made publicly available. It includes some of the most common pest threats faced by UK farmers including wireworm, cabbage stem flea beetle and pollen beetle, as well as other globally important species.

It is hoped that the new database will help speed up the development of novel pest control approaches that can overcome resistance and create more nature friendly solutions to crop protection.

The four-year Pest Genome Initiative (PGI), a consortium of Rothamsted Research and the agriscience companies Syngenta and Bayer, firstly sequenced the genomes, and then assembled them into their constituent chromosomes before adding information about what individual genes code for.

Benefits of the project

The team say their efforts will help in the development of crop protection products that are more species-specific and overcome the problem of resistance. They will also help develop nonchemical pest control methods, such as manipulating insect behaviour; focusing on the genes that control how insects find mates and host plants and hence shepherd them away from crops.

Before the research team set to work, detailed genomes had been assembled for only a handful of the planets one million plus insect species – and even fewer of these were crop pests.

The team say their efforts will also help in the development of pesticides that are less likely to incite resistance evolving in their target species – a huge problem for farmers and often the reason for excessive pesticide use.

Rothamsted’s Professor Linda Field, one of the research leaders, said the future of farming would be ‘smarter’ and involve less pesticide use: dovetailing the electronic surveillance of insect movements and measures that encourage natural pest control, with these newer, more targeted pesticides.

She said: “Currently as much as a fifth of all crops are lost globally to pests, and this is predicted to increase to 25 percent under climate change. Whilst non-chemical control methods can have some success in reducing crop losses, pesticides remain a necessary weapon in our fight against devastating crop losses and will so for the foreseeable future.”

Target specific pesticidies

Pesticides have long been implicated in wider biodiversity declines, most notably with the impact some neonicotinoids have on bee populations, leading to the subsequent banning of these pesticides in Europe.

By assembling these detailed genome ‘maps’ of annotated sequences, researchers can start to develop the next generation of pesticides – ones that very specifically target the pest whilst leaving other species unharmed, said Professor Field.

All the pests included in the Pest Genomics Initiative are well known for attacking vitally important crops worldwide, including oilseeds, vegetables, cereals, fruits, beans, sugar and cotton.

The hope is that by having these higher quality genomes available, researchers will be able to better understand how resistance to pesticides evolves – and it will also improve their understanding of insect chemical communication channels, opening up the possibility of non-lethal control methods that ‘hijack’ insect behaviour.

comparing these proteins to the proteins made by nontarget species, we can tailor control methods that only work on pests. Examples include those proteins that allow pests to de-toxify pesticides, the basis of much evolved resistance.”

Another exciting area for research will be into the genes involved in insect behaviour, the so-called odorant binding proteins and receptors, which allow insects to find mates or host plants. she added.

“If we can produce products that target those, we can potentially manipulate pest behaviour and shepherd them away from the crops.”

A further use for these genome sequences is in identifying insect species that have the potential to switch diets to feed on other crops – something that may become an issue in certain countries as pests migrate or new crops are grown as the climate changes.

The genomes will also be an important resource for the wider entomological community studying insect evolution, physiology, biochemistry and ecology.

In recognition of the fact that the future of pest management will involve both better targeted chemicals and other techniques, the project also assembled the genomes of three beneficial insects, the European hoverfly, and the pirate bug, both of which predate crop pest species, as well as a species of parasitoid wasp that lays its eggs inside the crop pest, the cabbage stem flea beetle.

Professor Field said: “It’s important we understand differences between insect species, so that we can both protect crops from pests and conserve beneficials.

A sustainable alternative for soybean meal

Pannonia Bio operates a biorefinery in Tolna County, Hungary, which is a leading hub for the development of new bio-based technologies. Today, the plant produces nutrition, health, biochemical ingredients, and fuel bioproducts that offer alternatives to fossil materials.

One of the key products manufactured by Pannonia Bio is Dried Distillers Grain with Solubles (DDGS), a protein-rich animal feed ingredient sold under the brand name Pannonia Gold. It is an excellent source of nutrients (protein, fibre, minerals) for a variety of livestock, including beef and dairy cattle, swine, and poultry. Pannonia Gold is also used as a substitute for fish meal in the aquaculture industry and as a source of protein in pet food.

The organic nature

What sets Pannonia Gold apart from other feed ingredients is that it is produced using state-of-the-art production processes under completely environmentally friendly conditions. There is no waste, every part of the corn kernel is used: from the starch they produce ethanol, from the fibre they produce biomethane and organic fertiliser, the oil and protein fractions of the corn is used in the feed industry.

The corn used in the production of Pannonia Gold is free from genetic modification, hormone treatment, and antibiotics. It is a co-product of the ethanol production process, which is helping

to secure European feed independence. Nutrients (protein, fat, phosphorus, fibre, etc.) in DDGS are concentrated by a factor of approximately three times (except for starch) compared to the raw material grain.

One of the biggest advantages of Pannonia Gold is its costeffectiveness. Soybean meal is one of the most expensive ingredients in animal feed, and its cost is only increasing due to its high demand. Pannonia Gold offers a viable alternative that can partially or fully replace soybean meal.

World Mycotoxin report 2022

Nutrition has a powerful and meaningful impact on an animal’s health. Mycotoxins in feed ingredients at certain risk levels can threaten animal well-being if not effectively managed, weakening animal immune systems and elevating their sensitivity to pathogens.

Cargill has collected and compiled mycotoxin contamination reports for years. As we have received more questions and interest in changing mycotoxin contamination levels from around the globe, Cargill has published the first-ever Cargill Global Mycotoxins Report which gives a detailed look at mycotoxin contamination levels across countries, regions, and the globe in 2022.

Seven years ago, Cargill animal nutrition business built a global, web-based tool powered by worldwide mycotoxins analyses. Today, with 300,000+ mycotoxin analyses captured each year from 135,000+ raw material samples taken across 150+ global feed plants, farms, and ingredient storage locations, Cargill hosts the most comprehensive mycotoxin contamination database in the world. Thanks to data centralisation efforts, Cargill generates a critical information mass to characterise regional, species, and/ or ingredients risk in real time. When calculating mycotoxin risk there are three key considerations: 1. Contamination rate

(percentage positive analyses with at least one mycotoxin) 2. Contamination level (analyzed mycotoxin concentration); and 3. Species sensitivity

Year-Over-Year Contamination We observed a slight increase in mycotoxin contamination levels in 2022 and expect this trend to continue. From 2021, analyses above Cargill performance risk thresholds increased 4percent. The largest performance risk increases include ZEN (+12%), T2 (+8%), and AFL (+3%). DON and FUM remain at high levels. Increases were due to seasonal weather variation, improved technology enhancing contamination detection abilities, increased byproduct and alternative ingredient use, and agricultural practice changes such as crop rotation, less tillage, and lower fungicide usage.

2022 Increased Contamination Level Influencers

• Supply challenges and high raw material cost. 2022 was a challenging year as inflation rates and raw materials costs rose and the industry experienced supply chain disruptions. We attribute higher mycotoxin contamination levels to increased byproduct and ingredient alternatives use (considering cost and supply chain challenges) that may have contributed to higher contamination rates.

• Climate challenges. Changing weather patterns impact mycotoxin distribution and prevalence. In 2022, record-breaking heat waves led to wildfires, droughts choked crops during growing seasons, and floods put regions underwater. Extreme

Despite a lack of visible symptoms, mycotoxins can wreak havoc on your animal’s health under the surface, affecting reductions to animal health and performance that can impact your bottom line. Good Practices for Storage

Proper storage practices include three control areas: temperature, moisture, and relative humidity. Each must be carefully managed

to protect ingredients and avoid mould and pests. And time is of the essence: if the correct practices are not followed and conditions deteriorate, the entire parcel may be lost. Temperatures should be kept as low as possible – especially below 77ºF or 25ºC as that is the optimal temperature for Aspergillus, the species of mold responsible for aflatoxin and ochratoxin production, to develop; moisture levels should remain below 14 percent, avoiding high moisture spots; and relative humidity should remain below 70 percent. The following practices, organised into three key stages, will help facilitate safe storage and decrease mycotoxin risk in corn as well as other feed ingredients.

Before Storage Intake:

- Evaluate risk based on ingredient origin to apply the right mycotoxin controls. Cargill offers a raw materials risk assessment and tools on mycotoxins.com to help inform this process.

- Drying: Ensure the parcel is homogenously dried below 14 percent and eliminate spots of high moisture. Sieving: Sieve the parcel before storage to remove small particles, which

During Storage Ventilate:

Take advantage of low autumn temperatures to ventilate and reduce temperature. The lower the temperature, the lower the aflatoxin and ochratoxin development risk.

Test the ambient air: Before ventilating the parcel, measure relative humidity and temperature of the ambient air, and use the psychrometric chart to check that ventilation will not increase moisture or cause areas of condensation.

• Monitor temperature: Measure temperature frequently to detect increases, which usually indicates high moisture levels, mold development, or insect infestation.

• Watch for infestation: Pay attention to insect presence in parcels, as it can create physical damage to the kernels and high temperature spots.

• Plan outbound controls: Consider implementing outbound

Sampling Systems for Cereal Products

Cereals and cereal products, which are the staple food of mankind, have been the source of farmers, millers, feed, food industry, trade, science, and consumers worldwide for thousands of years.

The most important stages in determining the quality of Grain and Grain Products is to sample in accordance with the standards, prepare the sample as stipulated by the specifications, prepare the minimum amount determined by the regulations to be sent to the laboratory for the first analysis and finally analyse it accordingly.

While dry cereal grains with low moisture content generally show little change during normal storage, some negative changes are observed with the increase in moisture content and temperature of the grains. Under inappropriate storage conditions, many adverse conditions such as browning, mould, germination, rotting, seizing, burning, rancidity, and alcohol odor formation occur due to these changes and as a result, serious economic losses occur.

A part of the mass taken from the piles of grain and grain products to determine any property of the pile and subjected to various chemical, physical and biological analyses is called a sample.

In order to carefully examine the physical and chemical changes occurring in the storage process of cereals and to take the necessary measures quickly against possible negative changes, samples are taken from the stacks of cereals and cereal products at certain periods to represent the entire sample mass and the physical, chemical and biological properties of these samples are examined, and time and ground are created for taking the necessary measures by detecting the problems occurring in the storage of cereals before they occur or at the initial stage. Otherwise, in the late detection of problems to be seen in grain samples, the complete disposal of the grain pile, production inputs, time, labor and energy consumption are seen. The sampling of granular products such as cereals, cereals, oil seeds, and pulses differs and probes are generally used for granular materials in sampling processes.

Current industry trends

Sampling systems known in the literature and used in industry are hand probes, horizontal probes, and vertical probes. In

horizontal probe systems, the mouth of the probe is inserted into the load with the probe pointing towards the bottom, rotated 180°, and slowly withdrawn to collect a single sample from the entire cross-section. To ensure that the sample is representative, the granular element in each sample batch is collected from three different heights (upper, middle, and lower levels) and from different points. In the case of vertical probes, three different methods of sampling are possible.

a) It is a method of sampling from a single chamber with a single or double pipe system with only pulling (vacuum) or pulling (vacuum) + pushing (blowing) method starting from the sample surface until it reaches the bottom of the vehicle body or from the vehicle body to the vehicle surface.

b) When the specially designed probe patented by Bastak Company with at least 8 or more sampling chambers on the sample probe reaches the required depth, the sample chambers are opened and the sample is filled into the probe from the chambers and then the chambers are closed by rotating the movable inner chamber. When the probe is taken out of the vehicle, the vacuum process is started and the sampling process is carried out.

c) It is a single chamber sampling method (generally used in mines such as fertilizer, coal, etc.) with a single pipe system with a single spiral method starting from the sample surface until it reaches the bottom of the vehicle body or from the vehicle body to the vehicle surface.

In addition to this; manual sampling method can also be used for taking samples from large piles such as wagons, trucks and lorries. In the manual sampling method, the personnel stand on the granular pile and take the sample manually with brass or aluminum long rods, which are defined as hand probes, ranging from 1-2 m in length. However, there are some problems in this case; the main one is that the sample cannot be taken correctly due to the sloppy work of the sampling personnel. In this case, if the sample does not represent the main bulk sample correctly, no matter how accurate the subsequent physical and chemical analyses are, the result obtained is incorrect. Analysing with a sample that does not have the correct representation can give false information about the quality of the granular product and in this case, it can cause great economic losses to the company that purchases the powder and granular product. In manual sampling process, occupational safety problems occur during sampling. At the beginning of this, during sampling from the pile, the risk of falling of the personnel climbing on the pile, in the case of sampling from each wagon, climbing up to the wagon, taking the sample, going back down, transporting it to the laboratory requires extra time and manpower. The maximum length of the hand probe is 2 metres and the stack height is much higher. Therefore, it is not possible to take samples from the bottom points with a hand probe. In addition, it is not possible to take accurate and homogenous samples in very cold and hot and rainy weather.

Fixed sampling systems used and known in the literature and industry do not take samples that are representative of the sample, but with the sampling device models mentioned above, it is possible to take real samples representing the product in the desired amount, in the desired regions and in the desired number from each layer of the products with probes determined according

to the product characteristics.

As a result of analysing with a sample that does not have the correct representation, incorrect information about the quality of powder and granular products is obtained. In this case, the company that purchases the product in the construction, mining, oilseed, legume, grain and grain industry can suffer great economic losses.

Wheat finding ‘equilibrium price’?

The old trade adage that markets move as much - if not more - on sentiment than on fundamentals, seems to have been borne out again in the past year. Did the wheat price really n ed to explode to record levels in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (albeit in against the backdrop of Canada’s drought-ravaged 2021 crop) – and stay unusually expensive for so long? After all, Russia itself was estimated to have boosted its own 2022 contribution to world wheat supply by at least 20 million(m), possibly as much as 30 million tonnes, eclipsing the 12m drop in Ukraine’s output. At the same time, Australia was turning out yet another record crop – 10-15m tonnes more than its usual level for a second year running (soon to be followed by an even bigger harvest for 2022/23). Among other key suppliers, there were no major problems in the EU or, at that time, in Argentina. While the once dominant US crop was continuing to shrink, market attention there seemed far more focused on the lack of interest from world wheat importers in America’s relatively expensive wheat. Still, markets had to respond to the sentiment borne of an unprecedented (in modern times at least) situation in the Black Sea region. Like the covid event a year or two earlier, no-one could be sure quite how this would pan out, i.e. affect world wheat supplies, export patterns, sellers’ ideas of what their commodities were worth. Amid the equally bullish input from the energy market, maybe it was unsurprising that something akin to panic mentality was bound to linger on the markets for many months.

Since then, wheat costs have retreated sharply (roughly halved from the peaks) as markets have calmed down. The Russia/Ukraine conflict remains a potential source of strength, evidenced by the way prices rose recently amid Russia’s implied threat not to renew the Black Sea grain corridor which had allowed Ukraine to return its export role to something approaching normal. Its seasonal wheat trade is still predicted to drop but by only 5m tonnes now to some 13.5m while Russia’s rises by 10m to 43.5m. Europe’s export contribution is expected to rise 5m tonnes to 37m, Australia’s by 4m to 30m and Canada’s by 10m to 25m tonnes. These gains put a far more bearish slant on a market that has seemed a little too eager to focus on another key exporter, Argentina’s recently drought reduced crop (exports seen down 11m to 6.5m) or the occasional exporter India’s smallerthan-expected crop (enabling perhaps 2m rather than the 10.5m tonnes it managed last season).

Bearish overall is the world wheat crop for 2022/23, still expected to reach a record level of some 790/800m tonnes - depending largely on which Russian crop source you believe. Taking the top number for the latter would suggest global production does not, after all, fall behind consumption and that world stocks go up rather than down - albeit remaining lower than the average for the previous five years or so.

Despite that, some mildly bullish factors are emerging to rein in the bears. Apart from Russia’s ability to interfere directly with Ukrainian grain exports (or indeed affect the latter’s production potential, already challenged by input costs and the hostilities themselves), there is the likely steep drop coming in Russia’s 2023/24 crop. It’s lower planted area and sometimes challenging weather suggest this could fall back by perhaps 20m or 30m tonnes but, depending again on whose 2022 figure you believe, probably remaining adequate to meet perceived demand - albeit without adding to Russian stocks as it has in 2022/23. Ukraine too will probably have spent the stocks it accumulated during the first Russian imposed lockdown on its 2022 exports and with another relatively smaller crop, looks unlikely to repeat the competitive role it played jointly with Russia (and Canada, Australia, Europe etc) in lowering 2022/23 export prices to more normal levels.

Australia still has more wheat to export than usual from its current record harvest while Canada’s contribution from last year’s crop rebound may linger further than usual into mid-calendar year. The EU crop appears to have travelled through the winter without major weather issues, rainfall having improved and frost damage avoided. Argentina’s unusually small exports will restrict its competitive role in pricing. So will India’s unusually low security stocks which, after this season’s rather disappointing harvest, will make its government less keen to up its export role for the time being. The US meanwhile has some drought issues but has finally started to sow more wheat, so could exert influence either way. Amid this mix of factors, world wheat prices seem poised around a US$6.50/$700 range, possibly testing this as an ‘equilibrium level’ (what economists see as a fair response to known input regarding the actual or prospective supply/demand balance.) Further forward

the US futures market still points to a potential 8-10 percent price gain. That appears to mainly reflect caution relating to Russia’s 2023 crop outlook as well as its continuing temptation to spook the markets with statements on the Black Sea export corridor. It would not be surprising if that prognosis turned out a mite too bullish.

Brazil, US may fill maize gaps

Global maize production appears to be falling well short of earlyseason predictions, thanks largely to weather issues in Europe and Argentina. At the start of 2022/23, the world crop was expected to total around 1,172m tonnes. The most recent figure from the US Agriculture Department is 1,144.5m. The biggest drop has been in Argentina’s drought affected crop, down from an initial projection of 55m tonnes to between 35m and 40m, some say as little as 32m tonnes. That follows a drought/heat reduced European corn harvest which fell from an expected 68m to just 53m tonnes. The all-important US harvest had already been flagged smaller by last year’s much lower sown area but has also contributed to the overall 72.5m tonne (near 6 percent) fall in the 2023/24 world crop from last season’s bumper 1.217bn tonnes. On the plus side for supplies, the Brazilian crop evaded most of Argentina’s weather problems on a larger sown area and is still seen reaching a record 125m tonnes, some local analysts think as much as 128.5/131.3m versus 116m in 2021/22 (and the average 97m of the previous three seasons). That has enabled it to add at

least 20m tonnes (about 60 percent) to its 2022/23 export potential.

Though down by almost 15m tonnes (about 36 percent), the Ukrainian 2022 crop was a little better than expected earlier and with the help of stocks carried in from 2021/22 and the Black Sea corridor agreement with Russia, has still managed to reach a reasonable level of exports after a slow start. As we go to press, the sustained influx of relatively cheap Ukrainian wheat and maize is reported to be upsetting some EU farmers, not least within Ukraine’s staunchest ally, Poland. Although the European Commission is continuing its favourable import duty policy for Ukraine, the flow might be expected to ease next season if Ukrainian production stays low and, this time, without carryover stocks to supplement supplies. Recent forecasts suggest its crop could be around 25.6m tonnes versus last year’s 27m but way below the 42m of 2021 and the previous three-year range of 30/36m tonnes.

Elsewhere on the corn map, it’s interesting to see most analysts looking for some increase in US planting in response to corn’s improved price versus that of its key rival, soybeans. The US government recently estimated area would rise by 4 percent

which, given better weather this summer, should mean the next US maize crop is up significantly. A yield bounce-back, barring another drought, could also bump up EU supplies going into latter 2023. In total the International Grains Council recently estimated world corn production could jump this year to 1.202bn tonnes.

The Paris corn futures market reflects potentially easing supply with a near 7 percent discount on late 2023 positions (around €233 per tonne versus prompt delivery in the €250’s. When this season started, it was over €350. The US (Chicago futures) market also flags cheaper corn ahead, latter 2023 almost 13 percent cheaper than now, under $5.50/bushel. Recent price support for maize in the US has come from a surprise burst of Chinese buying from the USA, totaling several million tonnes. It might suggest the Chinese crop (the world’s second largest after the USA’s) has not done quite as well as expected. However, that still leaves total US export sales, under pressure from Brazilian competition, running far behind those at this time last year, a persistent more bearish factor.

… & boost soya supplies

Like the grains, oilmeals are looking cheaper into latter 2023 as supplies increase, albeit by less than expected after Argentina’s worst drought in 100 years. Spot delivery on the US futures market was recently offering just over $450/ton, falling to just under $400 towards the end of first quarter 2024. On the benchmark Hamburg market, the monthly average soya meal price had dropped from the March 2022 high of $590 to as little as $526 by November but has since edged back up to a new peak of $610.

The main cause has been Argentina’s rapidly shrinking, droughtdevastated crop. At the start of this season, it was expected to jump to 51m tonnes from last year’s rather low 43.9m. The USDA recently had that falling back to 27m tonnes but some local analysts have dropped their estimates as low as 23m tonnes. It suggests Argentina’s exports of soya meal will drop by at least 4m to 6m tonnes, probably forcing it cede its place as top meal exporter to Brazil. The latter, in contrast, is heading for its biggest ever harvest, possibly as much as 153/155m tonnes compared with last year’s 129.5m and the previous record 139.5m achieved in 2020/21. (One analyst was recently as high as 157.7m tonnes). Brazil’s crush and meal exports will clearly be shooting up accordingly, possibly meeting the entire Argentine gap without a massive end-season stock drawdown. The next key factors will be US sowing (just starting under less than ideal cold and wet in the main Southern Plains growing belt) and summer crop weather. The USDA’s hotly awaited planting intentions report at the end of March surprised the market as drop in the previous strong soya/corn price ratio resulted in a forecast of 87.5m acres, hardly changed from last year (earlier seen significantly higher). If yields improve on last year’s relatively low level, it could return the next US crop to around 121m tonnes.

On the demand side, world soya meal consumption had been forecast to grow by about 5m tonnes, led by China (plus about 3.5m tonnes). China could put a bit more strength into prices if its bean imports rise by the predicted 4.5m tonnes – something not guaranteed in the current febrile eonomic climate (which

may slow growth in Europe and some smaller markets too). Overall, soya supply looks adequate going forward and, as said, the US futures prices for beans and meal point ‘South.’

More canola, less sunseed

World rapeseed supplies turned out better than expected this season, a new peak of 86.3m tonnes (plus 12.m tonnes of 16.6 percent) aided by bigger crops in Europe, Canada, Australia, Russia –even Ukraine. The recovery has resulted in considerable downward pressure on prices, the Paris futures benchmark recently recording a low of just under €419/tonne, its cheapest since mid-2021. Its Canadian counterpart in Winnipeg meanwhile hit lowest levels since the start of that year.

Canada needs to keep raising production to meet local crush demand. Global Agri-business giant Dreyfus announced this month that it plans to double its Canadian processing capacity to some 2m tonnes within two years. It follows a series of similar moves by other big crushing players in the past year.

As Europe’s second most consumed oilmeal, the rise in rapeseed product supplies helped offset a smaller than expected sunflower seed crop (50.3m versus the previous year’s 57.3m tonnes) largely due to the 7m tonnes collapse in Ukraine’s crop amid the Russian invasion. Top sunflower producer Russia’s own crop has gone from strength to strength in recent years, hitting a record 16.25m in 2022, amid total oilseed production of 29m tonnes. Russia’s crush capacity lags crop expansion and while the government plans to remedy that in the coming year, current season stocks have recently looked excessive and possibly at risk of quality deterioration, that might mean increased efforts to export the surplus although the authorities are reported to have no plans to lower export duties to achieve this. Despite the smaller global crop, world sunflower meal output was expected to increase in the current 2022/23 season, using up unshipped extra stocks carried in from last year in Ukraine. In total, world oilmeal output is estimated be rising from 349.3 to 356.2m tonnes, led by a 4.35m tonnes increase in rapeseed meal.

In 2021, WF Wells & Sons’ grain drier caught fire and had to be replaced. A five-brother partnership, and the third generation to farm near Bath, WF Wells & Sons’ farming enterprise grows OSR, winter wheat and barley, spring barley and beans, plus maize and has a dairy and beef herd.

“The drier caught fire as a result of an accumulation of dust. The dry weather meant that the crop was particularly dusty and dirty and the location of the drier, which had been installed in a tight space, meant that it was dragging in dust laden air which was settling on the burner tubes,” explains Andrew Wells.

“After the fire I called Andrew Head, Sales Director, BDC Systems Ltd, with whom I have a long standing and trusted relationship. He quickly confirmed the cause of the fire, which coincidentally aligned exactly with the view of my insurer,” continues Mr Wells.

Despite a new drier having to fit within the same tight space as that of the destroyed drier, and the top of the drier having to protrude through the roof of the grain shed, Head worked closely with Wells to re-design the plant so that the risk of fire was greatly reduced.

The challenge!

On Mr Head’s recommendation and following discussions with the insurers around BDC Systems’ ability to provide the best value for money, Mr Wells decided to install a Svegma 37tph continuous flow drier with a 4m footprint so fitting it into the existing space was potentially a challenge.

The careful design of the new plant allowed the Svegma to fit safely into the tight space by rotating it 180 degrees enabling dust-free fresh air to be drawn into the drier’s furnaces.

Working closely with BDC Systems, Mr Wells now

has a future-proofed plant which takes advantage of the most up to date grain handling equipment.

From the field grain is now tipped into a large gravity discharge intake bunker from where it is elevated via an existing belt and bucket elevator and dropped through an Aagaard heavy duty aspiration pre-cleaner to remove any light dust and chaff, helping to reduce the fire risk.

The grain is then transported via a Skandia SEI35/14, 60tph belt and bucket elevator which feeds a Skandia KTIFFR20/33, 60tph flow and return conveyor, to the Svegma drier. Once full, the overflow/surplus grain from the drier flows by gravity back to the intake bunker.

The Svegma is fitted with vertical turboclean dust extraction fans and dust extracted is pneumatically conveyed to the dust box by a Kongskilde TLR blower, rather than remaining airborne around the furnaces.

The drier is discharged through a Skandia KTIFb20/33, 60tph chain and flight conveyor with grain being transported through an existing reciprocating cleaner or direct to store using the existing handling system.

The additional choice

Mr Wells also chose to deploy BDC’s Moisture Monitoring System (MMS) to monitor the moisture content (mc) of the crop going into and out of the drier. Should the mc fall below or rise above the predefined levels an email or text message alert is sent, allowing any necessary adjustments to be made remotely.

The drier was supplied with BDC Systems’ PLC touch screen control panel incorporating the drier, grain handling equipment and MMS controls enabling Mr Wells to remotely view and adjust the drier settings as well as logging all drier data including: drier operating temperatures, discharge speeds, incoming and outgoing moisture content.

BDC Systems worked with Mr Wells to configure the control panel so that a chemical to prevent grain beetle infestation could be applied, using an existing applicator, to the grain once dried and on its way to the grain store via the Skandia conveyor.

‘The upgraded plant is a dream to use,’ says Mr Wells. ‘I dared not leave the old drier in case there was an issue. Now I am no longer tied to the grain shed during harvest. The remote access to the control panel means that I can log-in and check what’s happening and make any modifications, including shutting the plant down, regardless of where I am.’

Mr Wells cannot overestimate the value of working with grain handling experts, such as BDC Systems, who have a wealth of knowledge and are able to look at a project, no matter how big or small, and have the vision to design a bespoke solution that meets a farmer’s individual needs.

‘Andrew Head even provided the answer to the challenge we first struggled with. How to extract the grain from the fire damaged drier – he took one look and told us to get a demolition team in!’ Mr Wells adds. ‘We did and they were brilliant, dismantling the drier without damaging the shed itself, leaving the way clear for the installation of the new plant!’

INDUSTRY EVENTS 127th Annual IAOM Conference & Expo

The International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Annual Conference & Expo was held on April 17 - 21, 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Serving as a gathering for professionals in grain milling and seed processing from around the globe, the conference offered three days’ worth of networking, seminars, awards, and connectivity. Presented by multiple seasoned professionals in the field, the numerous educational and technical programmes covered a variety of topics such as assisting millers in improving yields, productivity, and safety.

The annual conference featured over 100 companies with some of the world’s biggest in the industry attending such as Pingle, Ozpolat, Sefar, and Gazel Makina. Our team that attended visited many of these companies and we were so happy to reconnect with old friends and make new connections. The exhibiting companies displayed a range of their products, from various types of machinery and equipment, videos depicting the multiple services that they offer, and new innovations.

Alapros began the conference on Tuesday with a reception and the following day 5000 people attended the IMEF breakfast on Wednesday morning. Giving the keynote address during the

breakfast was Meredith Nelson, Senior Director in field sales and foodservice ingredients at General Mills, who mentioned the importance of empathy and belonging to employee performance and retention.

Throughout the event awards were given out with the biggest award being the 2023 ‘Milling Operative of the Year Award’, awarded on April 20 during the IAOM banquet. Tim Carroll, Vice President of Operations at Grain Craft, presented Jack Keltz, Director of Grain Craft with this award.

Other awards that were given were the ‘Allied Trades Technology award’ to Steve Humphreys, Vice President of sales for CETEC Cereal Technologies, Inc., the ‘Arlin B. Ward Commendation for Excellence in Milling Education award’ to Enzo Galluzzo, a university milling instructor from Bogota, Colombia, and the ‘Aspiring Miller award’ given to a miller under 30 years of age who has provided exemplary service to the milling industry, Ramsey Hundley, mill superintendent at ADM Milling.

The show was an incredible success, and we look forward to attending future IAOM events. 128th Annual IAOM Conference and Expo is planned to be held on April 15 – 19, 2024, at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. We hope to see you there!

Highlights from the 7th Annual Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference at VIV Bangkok

Aqua Feed International, VIV and Dr. Mian N. Riaz from Texas A&M University hosted their annual 7th Aqua feed conference at the VIV Event in Bangkok, Thailand on March 7th, 2023. This conference was attended by more than 60 participants from all over the world. Below are the highlights for each talk given by ten international speakers at this conference.

How to Select an Extruder for Making Aqua Feed

Dr. Mian N. Riaz, Head of the Extrusion Technology Program at Texas A&M University, USA explained that in today’s market, several companies offer all kinds of extruders for making aqua feed, which can make the process of selecting an appropriate extruder very confusing for the consumer. There are too many choices in the market for buying an extruder. For examples, Single screw extruder; twin screw extruder; wet extruder; dry extruder; interrupted flight extruders; segmented types extruder; non-segmented extruder; high sheer extruder; low or medium shear extruder; extruder with vented barrel; conical screw extruder; thermal extruder; intermeshed co-rotating or counter rotating twin screw extruder; extruder with constant speed motor drive vs variable speed drive; extruder with back pressure valve; extruder with external density control system; extruder with manual, semi-automatic and fully automated control system; extruder with capabilities for online analysis; extruder with volumetric or gravimetric feeding system; extruder with different compression ratio; expanders without preconditioner and with preconditioner. Additionally, there are even several options available for preconditioner, for example, single shaft preconditioner; double shaft preconditioner; differential diameter preconditioner (DDC); two stage preconditioners; high intensity

preconditioner (HIP) and high shear conditioner (HSC), etc. Deciding on an appropriate selection depends on what kind of aqua feed needs to be made. Questions such as is it floating, sinking, slow sinking, high fat or low fat, semi moist or dry, the size of the pellet need to be considered first. An extruder can make feed from 0.6 mm to 60 mm; thus, selection of an extruder will depend upon the size of the pellet. All these factors will dictate what type of extruder you should select for making aqua feed.

Why Particle Size Matters in Aquaculture Feeds

Phil Erickson from Reynolds Engineering and Equipment, USA, explained that the first step in making aqua feed is to prepare your raw material using proper grinder and pulverizer for extrusion and that can be very costly, if not careful, you can spend lot of energy and efforts and then still ended up with poor quality pellets. Size reduction requirements for most feed and food industries vary upon application, which in aqua feed is between macro and micro particles. The size of particles bound together in a pellet, whether pelleted or extruded, influence feed production in the plant and performance in an aqua enclosure. This talk was focused on size reduction equipment currently used in agriculture and aquaculture applications and physical properties of particles, focusing on current and upcoming issues associated with size reduction in aquaculture.

Advanced Techniques for Extruded Shrimp Feed

Michel Bauer Pereira, Global Application Manager – Aqua and Pet; Andritz, Denmark gave an overview about making shrimp feed with extrusion technology. There are several different types of shrimp feed that is being made such as larvae and post

larvae, starter, grower, finisher and brood stock. This feed can be herbivore and omnivore and pellet stability in water and making it 100 percent sinking are most important factors for shrimp feed. Finished feed must have high protein, low starch and fiber and the required amount of minerals and vitamins. To make good quality shrimp feed grinding is most important, then conditioning of the raw material and extrusion processing. He discussed the expansion control system which can be used to make 100 percent sinking feed and this system can be adopted with extruder after the die. After extrusion drying of these small pellets is a challenge and then coating these pellets with oil and digest for palatability is also an art because of the small diameter.

Albert Wang – from CPM Asia provided an overview of drying theory, dryer in feed industry, what are the factor which effect dryer effectiveness can one dry fit all the industry and most importantly energy and cost of drying. He explained different types of dryer for the aqua feed industry, including horizontal dryer, vertical box type counterflow dryer, and carousel dryer with vertical cross counter rotatory flow. He also provided dryer comparison for all these dryers for the moisture uniformity, retention time, energy demand, product change over, area requirement, cleaning in place and steam consumption. He explained that not one dryer fits all needs, some of them can over dry and some of them can under dry the fish and shrimp feed. All these variations translate into energy loss. He concluded his talk, that not one dyer fits all. Moisture uniformity is the key point to effective drying process and uniform moisture dryer can increase profit.

Premium Extruded Shrimp Feeds

Dana Nelson Extru-Tech, USA gave his talk on premium extruded shrimp feed. He started his talk by explaining what extrusion is and its benefits. Cooking extrusion offers many advantages over alternative forming technology and as a result has been the preferred method for producing many aquatic feeds. Critical attributes for shrimp feed are that it must sink and stay stable in water for some time. He explained that shrimp feed production has not been standardised globally. Finding the ideal method for producing shrimp feeds is not a new debate and worldwide there is no consensus about the “best” method. He provided several different options to process shrimp feed. One of those options is to control expansion with the new concept of advanced Densification Technology (ADT) refinements which make it quite different. The basic concept is to move the cooking process away from the forming process (the die) in new ways. ADT components can create HIGHER heat and shear in the initial stage of the extruder than is typical (online control). The goal is to get sufficient heat early in the process allowing the final stages to focus on densifying and forming pellets. ADT equipped systems offer screw geometry, and conditioning dwell times that are atypical. The key components are: Mid Barrel Valve (MBV); Non-Conical final screw and head; Novel die and tube adapters; New die and cutting systems focused on increasing surface area for holes and longer knife options; Innovative configurations and screw segments. In summary, new die designs have eliminated the bottleneck small pellet sizes have been plagued with. This has always been a factor in low-fat shrimp formulations and feeds smaller than 3.0mm. Surface area is increased dramatically to permit more open area and hole geometry can be designed for densifying the pellet and facilitating higher capacity rather than restricting flow and ensuring sufficient cook.

Making Floating and Sinking Feed Using Twin Screw Technology

Hadrien Delemazure, Manager for Pet Food and Fish Feed Processing, Clextral France explained that twin-screw extrusion has been extensively used to manufacture quality aqua pellets for the last 40 years. Recipes are getting more complex and diversified, fishmeal and fish oil are being replaced by alternative raw materials, which sources may vary according to international prices fluctuation and availability. Furthermore, in order to produce both optimal floating and sinking feed, precise control of the pellet expansion and density is necessary Mr. Delemazure discussed the twin screw extrusion technology making the floating and sinking feed. Aquafeed production lines are today expected to offer more process flexibility, reliability

and durability that can be achieved using twin-screw extrusion technology. Currently we have choices to use single or twinscrew extruder to make aquafeed, and twin-screw extrusion provide more flexibility and choice to make different sizes of pellet and it allows to make floating or sinking feed as well. Twin-screw extrusion has been extensively used to manufacture quality aqua pellets for the last 40 years. While recipes are getting increasingly more complex and diversified, fish meal and fish oil are being replaced by cheaper alternative raw materials, which sources may vary according to international prices fluctuation. Furthermore, in order to produce both optimal floating and sinking feed, precise control of the pellet expansion and density is necessary. Aquafeed production lines are today expected to offer ever more process flexibility, reliability and durability that can be preferably achieved through twin-screw extrusion technology.

Aquafeed Production, Focusing on Precision

Dr. Michael Cheng, Global Business Development Manager, Pet and Aqua; Buhler, Switzerland disused Aqua feed extrusion; Focusing on precision. By explaining how the precision has move in extrusion technology from automated plant to digital assisted plants to self-adjusted plants to finally smart plants. These smart plants provide solutions to digital related services, and expert services. These plants are targeted to provide highest yield, optimize manpower, support operator, efficient energy uses, flatten consumption, optimise product flow, real time monitoring, enhanced quality, digital assistance for process tracing, higher capacity, optimal performance and reduce downtime. He explained how sensor technology can be used in granulation control loop for precision particle size distribution to make sure it is not too fine or too coarse. This can provide several benefits such as uniform granulation for downstream process, mixing, preconditioning, extrusion; real time data of production; narrowing start-up deviations with new products; adapting to raw material fluctuations; compensating wear of the hammers; compensating wear of screens and detection of broken screens. In extrusion precision can help in efficient eco control, flexible specific mechanic energy, operator friendly, bulk density control, quality control and preconditioner control. Precision control for moisture and thermal energy management in preconditioning. In extruder precision can help in product flow capacity which in result will be higher throughput, stable running, and consistent product quality He also discussed real time bulk density control precision system, which can help control the density automatically by adjusting the SME and thermal /pressure adjustment in extruder barrel.

Intelligent Application in Aquafeed Processing

Garrick Yan - Famsun Group focused his talk on new technologies to improve efficiency. He discussed startup waste control technology, extruded with better uniformity, and kept improving OEE/YE with data utilisation. He explained how a feed mill can reduce their start up waste with new type of preconditioners with water & steam injected separately in each layer. Optimised paddle configuration: automatic check the steam quality and adjust the parameters; applying thermal model to improve the temperature increasing speed. He also discussed different ways to improve the pellet quality such as density control system (P-DCS). In this system, the Pressure system enables the use of high energy input levels to cook the starch. After the pellet leaves the die, the high-pressure environment elevates the boiling point, which prevents the water converting from liquid to vapor, hindering expansion. It does not require a special screw configuration to produce both floating and sinking feed. The pressure level can be adjusted to manipulate the density. He explained how to improve water stability by better starch gelatinisation. Higher Temperature and more retention time leads to higher SG. Higher screw speed result in more gelatinized starch. High melt moisture has a cooling effect, leading to a reduction in melt viscosity and an increase in the total mass flow rate that negatively impact SG. He discussed some tips for producing micro shrimp feed. Extruded micro pellets can replace traditional crumble feed, enabling feed manufacturers to produce more nutritious high value.

Aqua Feed Coating System

Caleb D. Townsend- APEC -USA gave an overview of different coating systems. He explained all different types of coating system which are available for the aqua feed industries, discussed pros and cons for each system and then elaborated automated spinning disk coating system. Some of the advantages of spinning disk system is we can apply single or multiple liquids through one inlet, and it is totally closed system – no airborne mist. Overspray falls into mixing conveyor for further blending. Utilizing high speed rotating liquid disks for atomization and no spray nozzles – With this we can apply slurries and powders. There is no low-end limitation on liquid addition. Spinning disk provides greater product exposed surface area – a 13” diameter dry disk has a 40-7/8” long curtain

exposed to the liquid spray. A twin-screw mixing conveyor has gentle but active mixing – ribbon flighting with kick back paddles and it is 10 ft. conveyor = approx. 60 seconds of retention and mixing with C.V.’s of low teens to single digits. The goal is to coat the pellet uniformly and maintain the quality of coating. A typical coating system will have pumps and meter, control system and some types of scale to measure the flow of the material.

Soy Products for Aqua Feed in Thailand

Chuchai Kanjanamayoon from USSEC Thailand Technical Manager Aquaculture, explained nutritional value of soybean and its ingredients. He explained different methods to process soybeans and it different ingredients. He discussed advantages and disadvantages of soybean meals; soy concentrates and soy isolates. He elaborated on the new soy product which is getting lot of attention because of its better nutritional quality “fermented soybean. These are produced from SBM which is inoculated with fungi, bacteria, yeast or a combination of these microorganisms. Genera Aspergillus and Lactobacillus solid-state fermentation (SSF) or submerged fermentation. SBM is usually incubated at a moisture content of 45 to 50%. The wet substrate is inoculated with microorganisms and the fermentation process. Different microorganisms secrete different enzymes and in varying quantities. Improved nutritive value and reduced levels of antinutritional factors. FSBM has crude protein and amino acid contents about 5-10 percent higher than SBM. FSBM inactivation of the allergenic proteins glycinin and β-conglycinin and can potentially decrease the trypsin inhibitor, phytic acid, and saponin contents of SBM. He also explained the US soy Sustainability assurance protocol. A set of guidelines and standards developed by the United Soybean Board to promote sustainable soybean production in the United States. The principle behind the SSAP is to provide a framework for soybean farmers to adopt sustainable practices that protect the environment, promote social responsibility, and ensure economic viability.

Build My Feed Mill conference at VIV Asia 2023

Build My Feed Mill is a conference organised by Perendale with the support of VIV based on a flow chart of a typical feed mill and covers the many aspects of feed mill operations. It’s an incredible opportunity for companies that supply feed manufacturers with advanced equipment and other services to showcase and explain their most technically advanced innovations.

The Build My Feed Mill (BMFM) conference was hosted on the last day of VIV Asia 2023 on March 10. We have held this conference many times in the past with the support of VIV and VICTAM at many of their previous events, such as in 2021 at VIV MEA in Dubai and 2022 with VICTAM Asia.

One of the attendees had come to talk to us after the conference, telling us some of her thoughts, “The conference is filled with lots of interesting information. I plan to visit some of the companies that spoke soon!”

Lasting two hours, each speaker has ten minutes to present with an intended additional ten minutes at the end for the

audience to ask the speakers questions. We had ten separate speakers for the conference with eleven topics covered. We greatly appreciate every speaker and company that worked with us to make Build My Feed Mill the success that it was and we thank every one of them.

We started off the conference with Dr Olaf Nahrig from Amandus Kahl and his presentation ‘Roller Mills and Expander’. We then moved onto Marco Prati from PLP Systems and his presentation ‘Liquid & Powder additives: where and how to use in the feed process’, Claus Braunbeck from Frigortec and his presentation ‘Grain Management for reliable feed milling’ and Hang (Keith) Yin from Famsun and his presentation ‘How artificial intelligence affect the feed mill’. To complete the first hour was Jonathan Zheng from Zhengchang and his presentation ‘Application of Zhengchang horizonal dryer’. The first hour was incredibly fascinating to listen to and was filled to the brim with astounding knowledge.

We move into the second hour with a double presentation from Harold Schrojen

from Van Aarsen and his two presentations were ‘Conditioning: the secret behind a quality pellet’ and ‘Get a grip on grinding’. The last few speakers after Schrojen were Cornelis de Zwaan from Münch-Edelstahl GmbH with ‘New flexible container for feed pellet producing’, Harry Chiu from IDAH presenting ‘Carousel dryer’ and Dr Erfan Shahkar from Agentis Innovations with ‘Automation & digitalisation: Farm to plant’. We then end the conference with a presentation from Marty van Benthum from Triott with ‘Advantages of PTN MonoRoll pellet-mill’ which was followed by the wrap-up QnA. This second hour is just as amazing as the first with a variety of topics covered.

BMFM is always a successful conference, and I would love to announce that it was a major success once again; it was a full-house event with nearly every seat being filled. Aquafeed trends in Latin America

On October 3 – 5, 2023, Victam LatAm is launched in co-location with Grapas and GEAPS in São Paulo, Brazil. This complete and unique show in Latin America forms a very attractive market place for players that are active in the aquafeed sector. Each month we have a different theme and this Victam Insights edition is focusing on aquafeed trends in Latin America.

The market is broadly categorised by type into Fish feed (Carp Feed, Salmon Feed, Tilapia Feed, Catfish Feed, and Other Feed Types), Molluscs Feed, Crustaceans Feed (Shrimp Feed, Other Crustacean Feed) and Other Aqua Feed. More detailed: aquafeed is fish feed products made from vegetarian and non-vegetarian sources including soy, wheat, pea, corn, rapeseed protein, and fish oils and is commonly available in the form of pellets. They support easy ingredient dispersion and assist in the healthy growth of fish and crustacean species. The juvenile stage of aquatic animals requires a diet having maximum protein content for optimum growth. Aquaculture in general is highly influenced by the environment or temperature making it hard to anticipate how much raw materials are needed. There is a continuous high pressure on fish oil and fishmeal which leads us to low-marine-ingredient fish diets that are proven to be effective too. Salmon, for instance, can be produced with nutrients coming from ingredients other than fishmeal and fish oil, without altering final product quality.

In the region, there are basically three major countries that are standing out. Chile, the largest aquafeed producer in the region, has developed a highly advanced salmon industry, both in feed technology and nutrition. It is followed by Brazil, then Ecuador, which is a leading shrimp exporter.

South

American aquaculture market outlook:

• The South American Aquafeed market is projected to register a CAGR of 5.2 percent during the forecast period 2020-2025.

• Brazil and Chile together with 1.9 million tons of fish production are the major producers which in turn is expected to lead the South American aquaculture feed.

• Ecuador had a 17 percent increase in feed tonnage in 2022, which makes it a record year for shrimp feed production.

• The Latin American aquaculture production mainly relies on small farms.

• Brazil only has more than 200 thousand freshwater fish farms, about 3000 marine shrimp farms, and about 100 aquaculture research institutions.

• The activity is diversified in the region, but the bulk production is concentrated in Nile tilapia, Tambaqui and Penaeid shrimp.

• There is a huge domestic market for edible fish and shellfish, ornamentals, bait-fish and juveniles for biomitigation.

• Aquaculture can grow using previously impacted areas, rice paddies and including benthonic species in monoculture fish ponds.

The challenge within the industry remains to develop sustainable production systems to support a perennial industry. New technologies and sustainable alternatives that can increase overall productivity and support the shift to a circular (bio)economy. Interview with IDAH

For this edition, Victam has interviewed IDAH, the total solution provider for food, feed, and biofuel production (very known for the shrimp feed machine solution provider). The company provides one-stop service which includes: R&D Prototyping, Education, Consultancy, Turnkey solution, Single Machine, and Spare Parts.

In recent years what are the most critical technological developments that you have witnessed in the Aquafeed sector?

Aquafeed is growing a steady number. FAO forecast showed that the global aquafeed fisheries and aquafeed production in 2022 reached around 180 Mt and projected to grow at 1.2 percent p.a. during the outlook period, reaching 203 Mt by 2031. The COVID-19 pandemic and the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict have increased the challenges in the Aquafeed industry. Industry practitioners are developing new technologies to counter these problems:

The introduction of novel raw material

In recent years, many scientists focused their research on the plant-based fermentation products, insect-based protein, and algal sources material.

IDAH as a machine manufacturer is keeping up with this trend. Our pellet mill incorporates the preconditioning and post-conditioning system to ensure sufficient feed mash cooking up to 50 percent (tested by Iodine colorimetry). The cooking is needed to ensure high PDI (>95) and water stability (> 1 hour standard)

Energy-efficient machines and production system

Natural gas and petroleum producers scaled-down operations and increased demand for energy directly affect the energy price increases. Aquafeed producers are also directly affected by this energy price increase. In aquafeed production, the biggest energy consumption is the dryer. Moisture is added to the feed mash during processing to achieve product storage stability, so feed drying is a necessity. IDAH drying system featured:

A. The total moisture controls

IDAH carousel dryer is designed to dry with moisture variance of +/- 0.5 percent. With the significant increase of feed, a 0.5 percent difference can go a long way in affecting your profit.

B. Air exhaust recirculation – for energy saving 15-30 percent and lower dust/odor exhaust by 30-50 percent In aquafeed industry, the air exhaust coming out from the dryer temperature is around 60C to 90C. The recirculation of this hot air can be used as make up air, to lower the additional energy input to heat up drying air.

2: What is your vision on the evolving aquafeed industry? How do you cope with the emerging trends in aquafeed?

IDAH's vision is to provide cost, energy, and timeeffective aquafeed solutions. Some of our newest development:

1. Small feed 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm will fully replace crumbled feed.

In shrimp feed, crumble feed is essential for the early growth of shrimp larvae. Production of crumble feed is inefficient because it will produce around 30-40 percent of dust that need to be recycled.

We introduced the 0.8 mm pellet die holes to the market in 2021. When producing the same amount of crumble product, this pellet die size will decrease material usage by 30-40 percent and eliminate the need for the dust recycling process.

2. No more over-drying your feed.

IDAH introduced the Carousel dryer to the market in 2011. The dryer is now applied in drying of fish feed and shrimp feed. The working mechanism of this dryer can guarantee that your feed is dried to the exact target moisture, not over-dried. Over-dying feed not only caused energy waste, but over-dried feed may also easily break, forming dust.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your latest innovations or technologies?

These last two years, we introduced two new products to the market:

1. Super extruders die

In the past, no one put the attention to the quality of the extruder die that they are using, and we saw this problem. We introduced the super extruder die in 2022. The precise manufacturing and heat treatment increases the holes inner surface hardness, thus, help with material output and longer use life.

2. The third-generation pellet mill system for shrimp feed

In the past, no one cared about the moisture of shrimp feed, but with the increase of raw material price, many producers started to notice the effect of the moisture content in feed. IDAH consider all the requirements and experience in the field and have developed a generation 3 (G3) pelleting system that incorporates the carousel dryer and cooler combination (TK-series). We sold this system to China and India back in 2022. The two benefits of this G3 system are:

A. Total moisture control: easy and fast.

The TK-series can produce feed with ±0.5 percent moisture variance in both the dryer and cooler. This machine combination solved the high moisture variance problem that usually occurs when applying the conventional box cooler. TK-series machine lessens the point to control the production flow.

B. Saving drying energy.

In a carousel dryer, the counter-flow drying airflow will support efficient heat transfer and give a low exhaust air temperature. The system utilizes the air exhaust from the cooler as makeup air for the dryer. The dust-free makeup air discharged from the cyclone (or jet filter) still contains some amount of heat and can lower energy use (25-40 percent) and reduce the amount of air emission (30-50 percent) and decrease odor problems.

He is involved with various Non-Government Organisations including Indian Red Cross Society, KARM, India China Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He also represents Industry on various Government Bodies National Advisory council Min of FAH &D, Bureau of Indian Standard and Food Safety and Standard Authority of India.

You have a rich career in the feed industry, what initially encouraged you to get into this field?

I saw this industry as a way to contribute to an exciting/ forward thinking and felt that by serving this industry, we can serve the f armers of the country.

From your new position as Chairman of CLFMA, what aspects of nutrition and/or production would you like to see addressed and why?

From the standpoint of CLFMA, we would like to emphasise on essential elements such as sustainable production, quality control, traceability, innovations, adherence to environmental regulations, etc. It should also include implementing animal welfare management systems and adopting international standards for animal welfare within the feed industry. Further, sustainable production is important in the feed industry in order to ensure that resources are used responsibly, and that the environment is not negatively impacted.

The war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia will have an additional impact on the availability of feed materials. How can producers in India optimise resource use and reduce wastage during production processes? How can the Association help?

The war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia have led to a decrease in the supply of feed materials from Russia to India. The Indian feed producers can maximise resource use and minimise waste during production operations by implementing lean manufacturing processes, using alternative feed ingredients, using by-products, implementing preventive maintenance, using recycled materials, leveraging automation, etc. The association can help feed manufacturers by providing access to a range of services, such as technical assistance, access to finance and technology, market linkages, and market intelligence.

How can feed producers lower the total cost of ownership of their processing plants in the current market conditions?

One of the best ways to lower the total cost of ownership of a processing plant is to increase efficiency and reduce waste. It can be done by ensuring that the production process is well-managed and that any inefficiencies are identified and addressed quickly. Additionally, waste can be reduced by implementing a waste management system focusing on reducing, reusing, and recycling materials. Further,

automation can streamline production, reduce labour costs and improve product quality. Indian feed manufacturers should look for low-cost alternatives to traditional processing methods, including switching to more modern equipment and technology, such as automated ingredient dispensers and pelletizers.

What are the key innovations that support sustainable goals within the feed industry?

To attain sustainable goals, feed manufacturing companies in India must increasingly look for ecofriendly feed processing techniques such as energysaving systems, solar energy, biogas-powered operations, etc. Companies in India are also taking steps to improve the nutritional quality of their feeds by incorporating more plant-based ingredients and natural vitamins and minerals. These additions are anticipated to replace toxic feed additives partially or entirely like antibiotics with additives like eubiotics (probiotics, prebiotics, essential oils, organic acids, etc.) and photogenic. The feed industry's sustainable aims are further supported by improvements in feed formulas, feed production methods, feed storage, meal delivery, and feed quality control. Non-GMO feed products are becoming increasingly popular in India as they help reduce the risk of contamination and reliance on external feed sources. The success of the feed industry hinges on its ability to meet customer demands for safety and sustainability while increasing productivity and efficiency to feed billions of people in the coming years. Feed formulation and production will become a more precise science by concentrating on analytical technologies such as near-infrared spectroscopy, in vitro fermentation modelling, nutrigenomics, and bioinformatics.

How will India's feed and livestock sector cope in future in providing foodstuffs for a population that continues to grow?

In the coming years, the industry needs to undergo some essential changes in its system to meet the desired food-related demand for continuously growing populations. The industry must adopt a more holistic approach and invest in modern precision and livestock farming technologies to increase productivity and efficiency. Additionally, the sector should focus on improving animal health and welfare and investing in sustainable agricultural practices such as organic farming. Furthermore, the industry should focus on diversifying feed sources, streamlining the supply chain, and reducing wastage.

Amlan® International welcomes new Director of Sales for Latin America

Amlan® International, the animal health business of Oil-Dri® Corporation of America and a global leader in natural, mineral-based feed additives that optimise the intestinal health of poultry and livestock, announces the appointment of Dr Robin Jarquin as its Director of Sales, LATAM. In this role, Dr Jarquin will work to advance Amlan's development strategies and present mineral-based solutions for customers in Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Dr Jarquin will also be responsible for recruiting and hiring new industry partnerships and talent to expand operations in the LATAM market.

Dr Jarquin spent over 17 years at a major poultry production company, most recently serving as Vice President of North American Sales and Tech Services. In this role, Dr Jarquin was responsible for establishing new business partnerships and managing all commercial and technical service activities for the North American region. Previously, Dr Jarquin held positions as a microbiologist, Director of World Technical Services, and Sales Manager (CAMEX region.)

Canada Grains Council welcomes new president

The Canada Grains Council (CGC) is pleased to welcome Erin Gowriluk, as its President. As the newest member of the team, Ms Gowriluk will bring her extensive experience in raising the profile of Canada’s grain, oilseed, pulse and special crop sectors and elevating the discussion around relevant policy issues at a national level.

“There is a lot of opportunity for the Canadian grains sector at the moment, and we are confident that Erin is just the person to help us stay at the forefront of a rapidly shifting political, trade and regulatory climate,” says Rick White, CGC Chair. “Erin’s history of strong leadership, strategic innovation and nurturing partnerships within our sector will be immensely helpful as we work to meet strategic goals.”

Most recently, Ms Gowriluk served as Executive Director of the Grain Growers of Canada, where she managed day-to-day operations and advanced federal policy work on behalf of 65,000 grain farmer members from coast to coast. She has also held senior policy roles with Syngenta Canada, and the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions.

USDA Announces new National Institute of Food and Agriculture Director

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announces the appointment of Manjit K. Misra as the new Director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). The NIFA Director leads the agency’s work in advancing agricultural research, education, and extension to solve societal challenges. Dr Misra will start his new role on Monday, May 8, 2023.

Prior to joining USDA, Dr Misra served as a Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University. For more than 30 years, he was Director of the university’s Seed Science Center. Dr. Misra also was founding Director of the Iowa State’s Biosafety Institute for Genetically Modified Agricultural Products.

In 2012, Dr Misra was appointed Chair of the USDA National Genetic Resources Advisory Council (NGRAC), a position he held until 2017. Dr Misra has served on more than 60 local, national, and international boards and committees. These include the Steering Committee for the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) International Conference on Biotechnology, the Scientific Advisory Council of the American Seed Research Foundation, the Board of Directors of the Iowa Seed Association, the Iowa Crop Improvement Association, and the First the Seed Foundation.
