The Global Miller blog is an online offshoot of Grain and Feed Milling Technology magazine. While the bi-monthly magazine covers milling technology issues in-depth, the Global Miller takes a lighter approach. Our columnists have a keen eye for the most interesting, relevant and (let’s face it) bizarre milling stories from across the world. Each weekday we scour the internet for top-notch news and package it for your perusal in one neat daily digest. The Global Millers are also massive fans of industry events and shows and can often be found out on the road. Here they share stories (and photos) from their travels and, being unable to keep a secret, share details of upcoming events. But the Global Miller is your space too; feel free to comment and share your views.

07/01/13: new year, new news

Welcome to 2013. I hope your new year is getting off to a flying start. We're as busy as ever and have lots of exciting events in the pipeline. Let's start with a look at the news... While parts of the USA experienced unprecedented droughts in 2012, the UK saw one of the wettest years ever. In response, farmers are looking at new ways to protect their crops from flood risks. Delegates at the Oxford Farming Conference told the Guardian that they are turning to GM crops with a resistance to extreme weather. Read more... Russian leaders have learnt from the mistakes of 2010 by not banning wheat exports in 2012 says Douglas Busvine of Reuters. This analysis piece gives an clear insight into how the decision has been beneficial for farmers as domestic wheat prices have closed in on international levels. Read more...

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will eliminate the daily and weekly limits of grains in the school-meals program for the remainder of the 2012-13 school year. The changes come partly as result of criticism by parents and lawmakers who expressed concern that some children aren't getting enough to eat. In addition, school nutrition professionals have faced significant menu-planning, operating, and financial challenges as a result of the new meal requirements. USDA's new guidance gives schoolmeal programs more flexibility. While the broader calorie limits are still in place, the new rules adjustment will allow school- lunch planners to use as many grains as they want. USDA has not announced whether these new flexibilities for grain requirements will continue into the 2013-14 school year. More information...

08/01/13: Thailand replaced as top rice exporter...

Thailand has lost the top spot as the world's biggest rice exporter. Both India and Vietnam have overtaken the Southeast Asian country as exports fell 35 percent in 2012. Thai rice exports reached 6.9 million tonnes of rice last year, compared to 10.6 million tonnes in 2011. In the same period, India shipped 9.5 million tonnes and Vietnam sold 7.8 million tonnes overseas, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Association. Read more... NAMA pays tribute to National Birth Defect Prevention Month and 15 years of folic acid fortification The North American Millers’ Association (NAMA) pays tribute to National Birth Defect Prevention Month. This year marks the 15th anniversary of grain millers fortifying grains with folic acid to help prevent neural tube birth defects in the United States. This week is folic acid awareness week. Folic acid consumption is critical for the prevention of neural tube birth defects, which affect the brain and spinal cord.

Enriched grains, such as white bread, tortillas, cereal, and pasta, are the number-one source of folic acid in the diets of most Americans. “Millers are proud of the role they have played in reducing neural tube defects in the U.S. by fortifying their products with folic acid,” said Mary Waters, NAMA president. “National Birth Defect Prevention Month and the 15th anniversary of folic acid fortification is an opportunity for millers to acknowledge their link between grain and goodness,” she said. Since the FDA required fortification of enriched grains with folic acid in 1998, the number of babies born in the U.S. with neural-tube birth defects has declined by approximately one-third. The CDC acknowledges enriched grains, rather than supplements, as responsible for lowering the rate of neural tube birth defects by approximately one-third in the U.S. The CDC recently named folic acid fortification of enriched grains as one of the top 10 public health achievements of the first decade of the 21st century. 'The Bread Trail', a broadcast public service announcement created by NAMA’s consumer education partner, the Grain Foods Foundation, and the Spina Bifida Association, celebrates the achievements over the last decade and a half. You can view the video on YouTube here NAMA is the trade association of the wheat, corn, oat, and rye milling industries. Member companies operate mills in 38 states and Canada, representing more than 90 percent of total industry production capacity.

09/01/13: Canadian Grains Act overhaul; Thai fragrant rice; Pancosma staff

Yesterday we reported that Thailand is no longer the world's largest rice exporter. Today we learn that the country is also in danger of being toppled from the top spot as a fragrant jasmine rice exporter. Over the past decade, Thailand has faced fierce competition in the fragrant rice market from countries such as Vietnam, China and Laos. In fact, in the last 10 years, Thailand's market share of fragrant rice exports has dropped from 80-90 percent to that figure. The Nation pinpoints distorted prices and neglect by farmers as the causes behind the drop. Read more... In the first review since the 1990s, the federal government in Canada has announced changes to the Canada Grain Act. Fundamental changes in the industry over the last 20 years means changes are necessary. For example, the number of primary elevators in Canada decreased to 344 in 2012 from 976 in 1999. Read more...

The Institute of Mechanical Engineers has released a report which claims that up to 50 percent of food is wasted. World production of food stands at around four billion metric tonnes of food per annum, so the wastage amounts to two billion tonnes. The report pinpoints poor practices in harvesting, storage and transportation, as well as market and consumer wastage, as the causes behind the losses. Download the full report. The Indian wheat industry has received a boost in the form of cold weather. The world’s second-biggest producer, may reach a record for a seventh year as cold weather boosts yield prospects and record domestic prices spur planting, potentially aiding exports. Read more... UK imports of grain have risen as millers accept better quality grain. According to Emma Croft of Anderson Grain Marketing, milling wheats have accounted for a significant proportion of the imports, with more than a quarter (224,000/T) originating from Germany (a key source of high protein milling wheat) – that’s five times the amount the UK had imported at this point in the season last year. 14/01/13: Climate change and wheat; Indian wheat exports set to boom; Lallemand buys Aviguard business

Over the last 50 years developments in agriculture have improved yields. However, it's feared that increasing heatwaves will undo this progress. A study on corn grown in France predicts losses of up to 12 percent for maize yields in the next 20 years. A second study says that, without action against climate change, wheat and soybean harvests will fall by up to 30 percent by 2050 as the world warms. Read more... Although much of the world has suffered from a slow down in grain exports in 2012, due in part to bad weather, India has fared much better. The country is set to triple its wheat exports to a record six million tonnes in 2013. Over the last five years India farmers have stockpiled large quantities of grain which will help plug the global shortfall in lower-quality grain. Read more.... Lallemand Animal Nutrition has announced that it acquired Microbial Developments Ltd, the UK based manufacturer of Aviguard, on December 31, 2012. Aviguard is a well established avian competitive exclusion product that aids the rapid establishment of normal gut flora in day old chicks thereby minimising colonisation by transient pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella, E. Coli and Clostridium perfringens. Aviguard is sold in over 36 countries and is widely used in broiler and layer breeders, parent and grandparent stock. Yannig Le Treut, general manager of Lallemand Animal Nutrition says, “Aviguard is a well established and cost effective competitive exclusion solution used by many of the world’s leading poultry breeders and integrators to help prevent the colonisation of the gut by salmonella and other pathogenic bacteria. With ever increasing consumer and regulatory pressures on the poultry industry to minimise the routine use of antibiotics, we believe Aviguard is well positioned for the future and will complement our existing portfolio of poultry products, which includes Bactocell, Alkosel, Agrimos and Levucell SB”. EU compound feed production in 2012: stable vs. 2011

The compound feed production in the EU-271 in 2012 reached an estimated level of 151.9 mio. t, i.e. the same volume as in 2011 and 2010, according to the preliminary statistical data provided by FEFAC members. While pig feed production dropped by 2 percent, cattle and poultry feed have seen their production grow respectively by +1.5 and +1%. As a consequence, poultry feed consolidated its position of leading segment of EU compound feed production slightly above pig feed.

8

THE GLOBAL MILLER | January 2013

The most important factors which have weighed on the EU feed demand in 2012 were the still fragile economic situation of the pig sector and soaring feed material costs. Among the largest producing countries, Germany and UK performed rather well, with annual growth slightly above 2 percent, while France and Poland remained stable and Spain, Italy and The Netherlands saw their production fall at rates between -1 and -2%. Production of poultry feed in Southern Europe was affected in particular by the implementation of the new welfare standards for laying hens.

• • • • • •

Andritz Feed & Biofuel Brabender Clextral Dinnissen BV Extru-Tech Inc Jiangsu Muyang Group Co Ltd.

The high cereal prices over the last two years contributed to improving the competitive market position of industrial compound feed production vs. home mixing. However, this gain was offset to a certain extent by the development of alternative pig feeding strategies based on roughly grinded feed and liquid feeding. As a result, Germany’s position as leading EU country in terms of total compound feed production before France was strengthened, with Spain scoring third place.

Feed processing

The final estimate and detailed breakdown of the 2012 results will be presented on the occasion of the XXVI FEFAC Congress on June 5-8, 2013 in Kracow. CRAFTMANSHIP IN THE ANIMAL FEED AND FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

Market Outlook for 2013

FEFAC market experts foresee a stabilisation in poultry feed production, a further reduction in pig feed production (-1%) and a slight increase in cattle feed demand (+1%). Further market uncertainties are linked to the impact of the implementation of the new group-housing requirements for sows. Overall, compound feed production is expected to remain unchanged vs. 2012.

The demand for agricultural commodities is expected to remain high in 2013, with the main consequences of maintaining quotations at a high level. The quotations for agricultural raw materials increased significantly during the second half of 2012. With prices expected to stay high, the average cost for supply of feed materials could be higher in 2013, as compared to 2012. After two major crop failures for soybean in South and North America, a record harvest for soybean is expected in Brazil in 2013, but its positive impact may be undermined by the storage and logistics issues it could trigger. On the cereals side, the uncertainty is still important regarding the quantity and quality of the next harvest, due to bad weather conditions in major exporting countries. More information...

21/01/13: DDGS now a non-hazardous cargo in the US; BASF launches Novasil Plus; Indian poultry feed prices

The classification of US distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as a non-hazardous cargo became final and mandatory under the code of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on January 1, 2013. This was the culmination of a process initiated by the US Grains Council (USGC) in 2010 in coordination with DDGS producers and shippers and the US Coast Guard, which is the official US representative to the IMO. Erick Erickson, USGC director of global strategies said, "Previously, DDGS had not been classified by the IMO. But as DDGS trade grew, several insurance organisations communicated their opinion that DDGS was a hazardous cargo, raising the prospect that DDGS cargoes would be required to be shipped on vessels equipped with special fire suppression equipment – thus raising the cost of DDGS shipments." 23/01/13: FAO stats on Armenian crop production, rising wheat prices in India, Cargill beef plant to close

The FAO has released a report into food production in Armenia. We haven't featured Armenia on the blog much in the past so I thought I'd share the key points of this story. Crop production increased by around nine percent in 2012 and prospects for 2013 winter cereal crops are favourable. The cereal import requirement of the country is expected to decrease by 16 percent in the 2012/13 marketing year (July/June) compared to the previous year. However, the country is still heavily dependent on cereal imports, mainly wheat. Prices of staples, wheat flour and bread, increased steadily in the second half of 2012 and reached record levels in November. The increase mainly reflects higher prices in the regional export markets, as the country imports some 60 percent of its wheat consumption requirements. Read more...

28/01/13: Idaho Barley Commission; US GM labeling

• Alicorp SA

The Idaho Barley Commission is considering creating a $1 million research endowment with the University of Idaho. The money would be used to fund a scientist who would specialise in barley agronomics and soil fertility. The move that could result in the state checkoff fee for Idaho's 1,500 barley producers increasing one cent per hundredweight. The current assessment is two cents per hundredweight, which is less than one cent per bushel. Read more... Several states in the US are considering plans on GM labeling. Washington is has delivered a ballot of about 350,000 voter signatures to the Washington Secretary of State asking for mantatory labeling of GM foods. Initiative 522 – the so-called People's Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act - would require food and seeds with GM content be labeled beginning July 2015. Assuming the signatures are certified by the Secretary of State, the state legislature would have three options: adopt the measure into law, refuse to act on it but place it on the November 2013 ballot, or approve an alternate measure and place both it and the original on the ballot.More information...

THE GLOBAL MILLER | January 2013

“Concerns about feed, feed ingredients and the effects of high performance rations on the environment, finite resource depletion, animal welfare, health and, ultimately, the health of consumers themselves, have come to the fore and placed feed in the spotlight. In order for producers to remain efficient, sustainable and profitable we need to revolutionise the way we feed our animals and our world. Join us in March as we share new technologies and ideas that will pave the way for the future of the agricultural industry,” said Pat Charlton, vice president Europe, Alltech. More information... Mary Waters resigns as president of NAMA

The North American Millers’ Association (NAMA) announced today that Mary Waters had decided to resign her position with the Association. The employment relationship is being ended amicably on mutually agreeable terms. NAMA thanks Ms Waters for the positive contributions she made to NAMA and wishes her the best. The two fundamental strengths of NAMA are the commitment of its members to actively participate in the Association through the committee structure and its strong staff. NAMA’s members and staff will continue to work with our grain chain partners, the growers who produce the most abundant food supply in the world, and the companies that turn our ingredients into great food, on the issues of food safety, the availability of wheat supplies through enhanced breeding, access to sanitation tools, nutrition education and promotional efforts. Alltech's world feed survey finds significant growth in Africa and aquaculture

The world is producing 959 million tons of feed and has increased its production by at least four percent in the last year, according to the 2013 Global Feed Tonnage Survey released by Alltech. Alltech assessed the compound feed production of 134 countries in December 2012 through information obtained in partnership with local feed associations and Alltech’s sales team, who visit more than 26,000 feed mills annually. “The 2013 publication of the annual year-end assessment by Alltech is being released as an industry outlook resource for the new calendar year and will hopefully allow governments, non-governmental organizations and the greater public to appreciate the value that the feed industry is generating globally,” said Aidan Connolly, vice president of Alltech and director of Alltech’s annual Global Feed Tonnage Survey.

THE GLOBAL MILLER | January 2013

Among the 134 countries assessed in Alltech’s survey, China was reaffirmed as the chief producer of feed at 191 million tons and an estimated 10,000 feed mills. Consistent with late 2011 assessments, the United States and Brazil followed with 179 million tons produced by 5,251 feed mills and 66 million tons produced by 1,237 feed mills respectively. Overall, a 26 million ton increase was observed in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) year to date. Asia continues to be the world’s number one producing region at 350 million tons. However, Africa exceeded Asia in percent growth over 2011 results, increasing its tonnage nearly 15 percent from 47 million in 2011 to 54 million in 2012. Globally, the survey identified 26,240 feed mills, with North America and Europe serving as home to more than half of them. The Middle East was estimated to have the largest feed mills, with an average of more than 63,000 tons produced per mill. Sixty percent of feed produced globally is pelleted, with percentages particularly high in Europe.

When analyzed by species: Poultry continues to dominate with a 43 percent share of the feed market at 411 million tons, likely due to religious and taste preferences as well as cost. It grew by approximately 8 percent over 2011 estimates. Sixty percent of all poultry feed tonnage is dedicated to broilers, with the rest fed to egg layers, turkeys, duck and other fowl.

The pig feed sector matched poultry’s 8 percent growth, moving to 218 million tons globally. The ruminant feed market, comprising dairy, beef and small ruminants, grew more than 13 percent between late 2011 and December 2012, and now requires 254 million tons.

Equine feed tonnage increased almost 17 percent to 10.8 million tons. Aquaculture is the fastest growing species sector by tonnage with growth greater than 55 percent since 2011. Pet food represents 20.5 million tons, 40 percent of which are produced in the United States, but Brazil continues to make considerable advances in this sector. “As we look to the demands of the future, chiefly the feeding of 9 billion people by 2050, these survey results should stir optimism and resolve within our feed and food industries,” said Dr Pearse Lyons, president of Alltech. “Our global feed industry is rising to the challenge, and we’re seeing growth across the board. Moreover, we’re seeing it in some particularly key areas– BRIC, Africa and aquaculture.” Global feed production has traditionally been difficult to quantify because many countries lack a national feed association. For this reason, Alltech began in late 2011 to leverage its global presence to obtain a finer estimate of the world’s feed tonnage. The results of the annual year-end assessment are announced in January as an industry outlook resource for the new calendar year. Connolly presented the 2012 Alltech Global Feed Tonnage Survey findings at a joint meeting of the International Feed Industry Federation and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in October 2012. The meeting identified the need to collect more detailed information, a request to which Alltech responded, engendering a deep appreciation for what the feed industry is delivering worldwide.
