Editor’s Letter

The weather is still hot and humid, and it seems that any fresh breeze is still far away from us in this part of the globe. However, on September 21, autumn is officially here, and the fashion world is ready to embrace the cold months ahead with their AW 2021/2022 collections. As fashion lovers at OHLALA , we picked our favourite trends to welcome the new season in our wardrobes and share them with you in this exclusive fashion spread (pg 30).

Our Style Focus pages are also dedicated to the new season must-haves. After reading our magazine, open your closet and examine it with different eyes — you might find out that a tiring piece is now the new hot pick (pg 14). Still in the fashion universe, we talked to Noof Al Shekar from NS by Noof to find out more about her creative and architectural handbags (pg 36).

Our beauty pages bring you the latest ways to improve your unique beauty kit; discover a new blush (pg 44) and an exclusive limited-edition powder (pg 46). One of our contributors went for a pampering session with his significant other and reinforced the fact that sometimes, we need to press pause (pg 50). We also celebrate the industry with our OHLALASpa and Wellness Awards 2021 — votes are open! Visit http://ohlalamag.net/spawellnessawards/ and choose your favourite beauty destination in town. We love all things luxury, and the desire to enjoy beautiful and exciting things also applies to our food choices. This month, we had a Thai feast in one of Doha’s finest dining spots, and it was one to be remembered in months to come (pg 70). As usual, we ended our journey behind the wheel of a car; this time, we got to drive an imposing SUV (pg 78).

Wearing one colour from head-to-toe is always a great choice and for the cold months of 2021, opt for earthy tones. Beige, camel, khaki, ochre or hazel work well together and team up for the perfect autumn and winter outfit.

COLOUR MATTERS

Leather is a resistant material worn by bikers and a good pick if you want a long-lasting clothing piece or accessory. Faux leather does a great job in replacing the original textile and has been the choice of many brands that want to be environmental-friendly. This season, choices are coming in an array of eye-catching colours.

Luxe Tee

The Italian luxury brand, Max Mara is completing 70 years of fashion, and has selected seven artists to be printed on seven special-edition T-shirts to celebrate. As one of the precursors of today’s prêt-à-porter, the brand tells a bit of its history with these T-shirts. One portrays the photographic shots by William Wegman of the elegant Weimaraner dogs wearing the Max Mara 101801 camel coat. There are also nautical themed graphics by Brian Grimwood that were in the Max Mara SS 2016 runway show and the graphic prints seen on the AW 2021 catwalk in Milan, inspired by Erberto Carboni’s work. These images swirl in a continuous dance between the past, present and future. The T-shirts are made in pure cotton jersey and feature appliqué panels specifically crafted to enhance each artwork.

We all want a world in which every woman uses her power to make change for the better. This is the inspiration behind the new #MouawadWomenWithPower campaign launched by Mouawad. The photoshoot features models wearing unique jewellery pieces by the brand, alongside horses, which play a strong role in Arabian cultural traditions, alluding to notions of strength, wisdom and liberty. Mouawad Co-Guardians Fred, Alain and Pascal Mouawad commented: “The #MouawadWomenWithPower campaign invites every woman to believe in their potential and advocates for women’s rights in every country. Mouawad firmly believes that as countries of the Gulf continue on their paths of diversification of their economies, greatness can be achieved through giving women their rights to create a better future.” The jewellery featured in the photoshoot consists of unique masterpieces showcasing natural gemstones, including sapphire, topaz, rubellite and diamond, in mesmerising designs.

It is Winter in Your Wardrobe

The ball of fire above us is still shining very bright and warming (heating, burning) our days. However, it is time to assess the autumn and winter 2021/2022 trends to embrace the new season in style!

The fashion world has endured the ongoing pandemic. Readapt and recreate were the words of command that designers understood and interpreted in their creations. Some fashion shows happened with safety measures, distancing chairs and reducing attendance, while others opted for just a photoshoot to showcase their new collections.

Either way, designers in the four main fashion capitals showed us that they are done with comfort and dull stay-at-home structures. Bold hues and party-ready are the new vibes of the cold season.

Brands such as Givenchy, Alberta Ferretti and Paco Rabanne showed

sparkly dresses for that grand event or party you’ve been waiting for since this whole pandemic situation started. When it finally happens, it will be epic, and an over-the-top outfit will be required!

But if you want something less flashy, denim is the call, as seen at Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen but use a different approach, cover your accessories in blue jeans. Fancy loafers are the classy touch to your looks in the footwear arena, while fashionable clogs add a folksy element to your casual outfits.

Get your wardrobe ready to embrace the stylish trends of autumn and winter 2021/2022.

KEEPING WARM

Long coats are a mandatory item in low temperatures, and they don't have to be boring! Opt for a checked number to walk in style. Wool pieces are the best pick when the thermometer drops. However, in mild winters, like the ones in the Middle East, you can show off this trend in lighter fabrics such as cotton and fleece.

ACID GREEN

A touch of colour is the ultimate focal point of an eye-catching look. It can be painting one of your clothing pieces or accessories, or you can be bold enough to go full-on luminescent green. Add a fluorescent verdant note to your outfits to embrace the vibrant energy of this hue.

Love them or hate them, clogs are a retro staple that bring back the hippie vibe of the '70s. The bulky footwear adds a touch of vintage style to your looks, ensuring that your fashion radar is working at its best! They are traditionally made with wood or reinterpreted in rubber.

QUILT ME!

This multi-layered textile is the warmest choice of the season. Sewn in different shapes, it traditionally comprises three layers that can be thin or thick, depending on the materials used. The most popular designs are a sequence of diamonds, but creativity is the key here and, during the cold months, it can be worn from head to toe.

BLUE JEANS

Once a fabric related to labouring, denim has long conquered the fashion world and has been starring in catwalks around the globe. From stone washing to solid dark blue, the well-loved textile can be spotted in dresses, jackets, shoes and handbags.

COLOURED TIGHTS

Even though we are entering the cold-weather season, designers went big in the miniskirt and dress departments, and the solution to keeping your legs warm is colourful and printed tights. They are daring, adding a striking detail while serving their purpose.

LAYERING DUTY

They say that living in the past is not a good practice; however, this statement is not applied to the fashion world, and we re-live trends from time to time. A staple in old times, men’s vests (waistcoats) are now a fave element in cool girls’ looks. Tailored and sweater pieces are this season’s best bet!

FANCY LOAFERS

The classic men's shoes have returned to girls’ wardrobes, but chunkier and higher this time. The office high-heeled loafers and Oxfords are stepping out of the corporate world and hitting the high street with block heels for a feminine touch. They are smartly worn with skirts and dresses and if you want an edgy approach, wear them with cute socks.

INTO THE WILD

Animal print is a common find in autumn and winter collections, but this season's highlight goes to this spotted cat: the leopard. The pattern in this animal’s coat mixes brown, black and white tones, with hints of dark orange. The perfect colour combo for a fashionable look.

PARTY READY

It was fun when we discovered that wearing stay-at-home clothes was a thing, and it would be part of our lives for a while. However, after a year and a half of it, we are done and ready to release our inner party animals. Even though life is not fully back to normal, whenever we find the opportunity, the outfit will be breathtaking!

Architectonic Designs

OHLALA spoke to the designer Noof Al Shekar from NS by Noof to better understand the concepts behind her eye-catching clutches and accessories. Come into her geometrical world with us!

OHLALA - When did you know that the world of fashion was going to be part of your life?

Noof Al Shekar - I always had a passion for fashion, and the idea of having my brand started in 2009. The statement behind my label revolves around jewellery and handbags, the two things women cannot resist.

OHLALA - How is your process of creation? What are your main inspirations?

Noof - The process starts from the 3D shape of the clutch and then breaks down to the geometric pattern in the brass sheet that shapes the clutch. My inspiration is mainly from architecture and old jewellery. My creations are complicated to construct and bring to life, and that’s what makes them

unique. We use sacred geometry [the underlying geometry in nature] as a spiritual symbol and combine it with semi-precious stones that have the Earth energy to balance each piece out.

OHLALA - Your pieces are very architectural. Would you say that this is a trademark of your brand?

Noof - Yes, my love and passion for architecture do reflect on my brand. In the beginning, I used lots of Arabic and Islamic patterns to reflect my heritage in my work. However, the more I educated myself about architecture and sacred geometry, the more my pieces took bolder shapes and looks. It became the soul and heart of the brand.

36 www.ohlalamag.net
DESIGNER Focus

OHLALA - How important are the materials used in your handbags and clutches? How do you source them?

Noof - We always use the best material to create a high-end brand. The brass used is all gold plated, and the lining is from genuine leather. We are now launching a new line of sustainable bags using recycled plastic and ocean waste; we have still maintained the brand DNA by keeping the geometrical patterns.

OHLALA - You don’t follow trends; instead, you create timeless and eyecatching accessories. What is the formula?

Noof - Our pieces are indeed classic and timeless. I believe in owning something unique that will stand out and be with you for a lifetime. Trends are fun and inspiring, but you touch the clients’ sense of fashion by creating unique pieces.

OHLALA - You are a mum and an entrepreneur; how do you balance your work life with your personal life?

Noof – Well, I started the business after having my first two boys - they are young men now - and I always had so much energy and wanted to direct it into something that represents me and make them proud. Having a niche brand did help as well with the small quantities and limited clients that look for something unique and different. Now they are all grown-up and very supportive of me. The denim designs were all created with the input and cooperation of my eldest son Abdulla who is going to study architecture this year.

OHLALA - What is the piece of advice that you would give to all creative minds out there wanting to start their own business?

Noof - Start today, start with an idea, dream about it, think about it, and it will be created. Life does happen; don’t let that stop you. Take baby steps, and you

are still moving towards your dream; baby steps are better than no steps. Set your priorities in life and put in an ethical goal, and you will achieve the world.

OHLALA - Do you think that being born and raised in the Middle East influenced how you design your handbags and clutches?

Noof - Definitely, I am a very proud Arab and Muslim, yet I am a very openminded person and love to learn and explore different cultures and religions. They all have symbols and geometric shapes, making it a very interesting playground to create my own patterns, structural styles and characters reflected in my designs.

Audemars Piguet’s 2021 collection for women offers four new timepieces that echo their multifaceted personalities.

udemars Piguet is adding four more designs to its already beloved Royal Oak collection. Eclectic in colour, savoir-faire and style, these timekeepers resonate with women’s different preferences and individual flair. Blending tradition with an avant-garde twist, the new pieces offer creative contrasts from the sleek aesthetics of black ceramics to the shimmering sparkle of frosted gold or the vivid hues of multicoloured gemstones. These versatile mechanical pieces become true statements on your wrist.

The Royal Oak Selfwinding (34mm) in black ceramic with touches of pink gold brings a refined aesthetic to this model. The timepiece is enhanced with pink gold accents for a subtle two-tone contrast. Timeless and ingenious, the black hues seamlessly complement the unique style of its wearer.

The Royal Oak Frosted Gold Selfwinding (34mm) with a light blue dial has an 18-carat white gold case and is adorned with frosted gold and enhanced with a tapisserie dial in new shades of blue. This unique combination celebrates the elegance and refinement at the heart of the manufacture’s craftsmanship.

The Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph (38mm) comes with a purple dial and baguette-cut amethysts on the bezel. Developed by the manufacture’s artisans, the dial displays a range of purple hues that dance and change in the light. The amethysts decorating the bezel match the tones of the purple dial to perfection.

The Royal Oak Frosted Gold Double Balance Wheel Openworked (37mm and 41mm) has a rainbow bezel set with multicoloured gemstones. The attention to detail at the heart of these timepieces and their interplay of colours, materials and refined decorations draw inspiration from diverse worlds, including haute joaillerie and haute couture.

Horology

The photographer Harley Weir combined haute horlogerie and haute couture when shooting the new Royal Oak watches. He explored how a timepiece or a couture look reflects the wearer’s personality and freespirited attitude. “My inspiration for the shoot was to think about the way the watch was made and its different materials and then think about how the woman is made, what is part of her personality, what is her character and who she is,” said Harley.

Chasingthe Light

Bringing a new meaning to light, the Holographique collection from Boucheron catches the complexity of luminosity where every piece reveals all the colours of the world.

JEWELLERY

Beauty and ephemeral designs are at the heart of Holographique, the new breathtaking collection from Maison Boucheron. After evoking the moving beauty of the sky, the brand’s Creative Director, Claire Choisne, is taking her quest further into the theme of light and its power to change one’s surroundings. Such as to reproduce the moment that a rainbow appears, evoking a sweet euphoria teamed with emotions and memories of innocence.

Claire Choisne was inspired by the work on light and colour by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Luis Barragan. While her search to define the significance of colour for Boucheron has lasted many years, it is in the magic of this accidental crossing, when sunbeam diffracts into myriad, electric atoms, that she has found the solution. Each piece across this High Jewellery collection places the holographic effect as its central theme. The collection encompasses nine sets, which include 25 unique pieces that delve into the roots of this photosensitive phenomenon and its Greek etymology, which means ‘to represent everything’. By spraying precious metals at high temperatures onto ceramics or rock crystals, they have succeeded in recreating this natural magic through a process that is able to cement what is traditionally a fleeting moment in time. The workshops at the 26 Vendôme Maison have had to surpass their own limits to explore the full richness of this mirage. The collection brings ever-changing structures destined to vary depending on the brightness of the place, the viewing angle and the contrast with the skin. A radical and euphoric release, which goes against the discipline that defines French High Jewellery, except, of course, it matches the very spirit advocated by Frédéric Boucheron. The freedom to create above all else.

Mastering Colour

Givenchy is expanding its commitment to add extra radiance to your skin with its new Prisme Libre Blush. Glow-up, girl!

new make-up product will always put a smile on a beauty queen’s face, and Givenchy is doing that by adding a new item to the Prisme Libre line. Conceived in 2006 by Nicolas Degennes, Givenchy’s Make-up and Colour Artistic Director, it started with a loose powder that has proven itself to be an ultimate light source. The powder was then followed by Prisme Libre Skin-Caring Glow, a hybrid foundation containing 97% ingredients of natural origin with a formula that includes a 90% skincare base to act on the skin’s radiance and hydration. Now, the Prisme Libre family is growing with its first four-colour loose powder blush – the Prisme Libre Blush. The new product promises to release colour, boost your glow, sculpt your face and naturally enhance your cheeks with utter lightness. The concept of this blush revolves around the fact that each palette brings four different complementary shades that blend perfectly, creating a new dimension to your make-up. Lasting up to 12 hours, the Prisme Libre Blush comes in six different ranges and their names are a nod to the brand’s couture DNA referencing the finest materials used in the fashion label. Mousseline Lilas and Taffetas Rosé are the best matches for very fair skin types. Voile Corail and Organza Sienne are designed for light to medium complexions, while Popeline Violine and Flanelle Rubis are flattering on medium to dark skin types.

For the best application of this 3D-effect blush, Nicolas Degennes gives us some tips. For a sunny effect, add a stroke of your favourite shade on the bridge of your nose. And if a natural but lively result is what you are looking for, sculpt your features by using the Organza Sienne or Flanelle Rubis palettes (depending on your complexion tone) instead of a bronzer.

Guerlain’s Terracotta collection has been reinvented with two new and exclusive limited-edition powders. Bring on the perfect light!

Sometimes the ideal sunshine-glow effect on the skin is better achieved with the help of the right make-up. Guerlain is introducing these limited-edition powders to play with the sun’s light on the face. Terracotta Light Bloom and Terracotta Sun Bloom capture the fresh glow of daybreak and the soft warmth of the setting sun. Terracotta’s organic-shaped compact reveals two sunny, blooming powder flowers infused with subtle golden shimmers and either a delicate pink or a coral centre. Terracotta Light Bloom captures the energy of the rising sun, promising all the radiance of the daylight. It brings the fresh, dewy pink light of a summer dawn. Guerlain’s bestselling N°3 shade is enhanced with a delicate pink centre and fine golden accents for a radiant blush finish in

this powder. The Terracotta Sun Bloom has taken inspiration from the end of a summer’s day when the sunlight dims and the horizon fills with gold and amber reflections. This compact is also a twist on the brand’s N°3 shade, but, in this option, the centre comes in a coral tint and an array of gold shimmers that reproduces the intensity of a stunning sunset. The compacts can be applied all over the face or in touches to veil the complexion with sunlight. When the shades are mixed, they warm the skin and enhance the natural glow of a tan. If you opt to apply separately, the blush tones highlight cheekbones. Terracotta Light Bloom and Terracotta Sun Bloom create a made-to-measure illuminating effect. Shades and strength can be altered to suit any mood.

Hair Care Homemade

Are you facing hair problems? The answer to treat your locks might be in your garden and pantry. Dive into OHLALA’s DIY beauty tip for our September issue, sponsored by The Spa at Park Hyatt Doha.

Herbs have been used as essential ingredients in the kitchen but also in medicine and in the beauty world back to antiquity. Masters of herbal traditions and some scientific studies show that rosemary is a valuable ingredient to treat hair and scalp health. The plant stimulates circulation and acts as an anti-inflammatory element.

From the pantry, another natural ingredient, apple cider vinegar, can be an ally to your hair health. Rich in vitamins C and B, it also contains alphahydroxy acid, which helps exfoliate scalp skin, and its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties help with dryness and dandruff. The popular dressing ingredient also balances the scalp pH level and can be used regularly. When combined, rosemary and apple cider vinegar make a natural remedy that can keep your scalp clean and looking healthy. Follow the steps below to create your own homemade powerful hair cleanser.

OHLALA’s Rosemary and Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

What you’ll need:

1 cup apple cider vinegar

½ cup fresh rosemary sprigs

¼ cup dried rosemary leaves

2 cups water

How to make and apply it:

1. Get a glass jar (mason jars work well, but use a plastic lid, vinegar erodes metal lids) and add the apple cider vinegar and fresh rosemary. Close the jar and leave it on a shelf for almost three weeks until the rosemary leaves lose their bright green colour.

2. Once the vinegar is finished steeping, remove the fresh rosemary sprigs and extract the rosemary essence from the dried rosemary leaves through a process called decoction.

3. For the decoction, add the two cups of water and ¼ cup dried rosemary leaves to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Leave it to simmer on a low heat until the volume is reduced by half. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool before straining.

4. Add the strained rosemary decoction to the jar of infused vinegar. Store at room temperature away from light and use within three months.

5. Use about a quarter of the infused vinegar before shampooing, pouring it generously over your scalp and roots. Massage it into your hair thoroughly, then shampoo and condition as usual.

SPA Spotlight

ith an aesthetically pleasing design reminiscent of Marrakesh architecture, a diverse array of spa facilities and services and a team of dedicated multinational professionals, eforea Spa at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas has everything you need for a rejuvenating guest experience. Upon arrival with my better half for a couples’ massage at Hilton Salwa, we had mixed emotions and impressions about the place. After entering the premises, we came across the hustle and bustle of a busy family resort as kids were hanging on the side of a 4x4, rushing towards the waterpark. I shook my Dutch head disapprovingly and laughed at the same time. The Hilton Salwa lobby entrance seemed hectic, which was oddly charming and enchanting. Entering the spa, it felt as if the lobby chaos transitioned into blissful Arabian bathhouse décor. Spaciousness, comfort and splendid architectural features were pre-massaging our eyes. A warm and hospitable hostess greeted us as cold towels, and herbal drinks were served. The massage menu was presented, and options were explained patiently and accurately.

Browsing through the rich massage menu with my habibti, our eyes glanced over the Balinese Massage option. Knowing the mental strain and physical stress my partner has been under, I advised her to pick a 60-minute Balinese massage and 30-minute head massage, as I chose 90 minutes of bliss through herbal sacs, deep heat and long strokes: the Thai Herbal Poultice massage.

51 www.ohlalamag.net

SPA Spotlight

In the herbal poultice massage, the application of heat through sacs (made of cloth) combined with long strokes by hand and acupressure ensure an all-around experience with maximised wellness benefits. These benefits include better blood circulation, which leads to accelerated tissue rebuilding, relief of joint pain and relaxation of muscles. Compresses can be filled with dried and crushed mixed herbs such as tamarind or acacia leaf, borneol camphor, lemongrass and salts. The spice-based poultice can be made of a mixture of peppercorns, cloves and other leaf-like ingredients, which all have their specific healing properties, according to Ayurvedic science.

The in-room and massage experience, in our case, a very spacious couples’ room with an en-suite Jacuzzi, steam room and showers, can be described as magnificent. Our massage therapists, Ratima and Jocelyn, were professional, skilled and worked in unison. From the moment we lay down, the anticipated journey began with a soft voice and a soft touch. I am a massage enthusiast, but what satisfied me the most in this experience was the sight of my better half being in a deep state of relaxation and at utter peace with herself. She even slightly dozed off, looking peaceful with a smile of satisfaction on her pretty face. For once, she did not nag me for Thai food.

52 www.ohlalamag.net

The dreadful moment when we heard our therapists saying, ”Your treatment is finished now,” was luckily followed by an astounding experience in the wet areas of the establishment. Your post-massage experience will be at either the male or female wet areas where one can enjoy luxurious facilities, such as a sauna, steam room or a spacious jet pool. The lovely attendant will encourage you to enjoy the Experience Shower, which I would highly recommend.

The newly opened eforea Spa at Hilton Salwa will soon be sought after and renowned for outstanding quality and excellence. This spa truly has award-winning potential. Covid-19 rules are tough on the spa industry and may hinder spas’ abilities to provide top-notch wellness experiences. But I can honestly say, it won’t be long before Doha residents will be gladly making the trip to destination eforea Spa at Hilton Salwa for an unforgettable massage experience and well-deserved leisure time.

We did. We would do it again, and you certainly should!

Wind Weaving the

The Azzi & Osta haute couture autumn and winter 2021/2022 inspiration started with a trip to the International Perfume Museum in Grasse, France. The vast universe of essences was the perfect place to imagine an ethereal and dreamy collection. At the museum, one of the things that caught the designers’ attention was the world map illustrating the origin of each flower, each plant extract — osmanthus from Japan, pine needles from Canada, sandalwood from India. The map draws attention to the different territories, climates, civilisations, and cultures that can intersect in a perfume’s composition — so many hands, so much work, so many communities, so many talents in one single flask. Georges Azzi and Assaad Osta saw in each perfume a choral masterpiece. The idea of this worldwide collaboration to obtain the most subtle, the most abstract product possible obsesses these two nature lovers. In the light of climate change, it also reassures them that if humanity can join hands to create beauty, it can also save the Earth. The designers wanted to materialise the lightness, volatility and pervasiveness of a fragrance. They also wanted to contribute to species protection, which resulted in the creation of feathers without feathers and fur without fur. Just as perfumery uses artifice to replace or refine rare essences, the designers pipe the organza and assemble it into moving ears of wheat on a ready-to-fly stole. A swirl of tulle, gauze and silk organza invaded the workshop, followed by a custom-made floral fabric, printed in 3D with verbena and patchouli. A new material is also introduced: raffia, a natural and renewable fibre inspired by the baskets and straw hats of the flower pickers. The palette is as soft as the heart notes that linger on the skin when the brighter tones have evaporated.

As light and engaging as a fragrance, the Azzi & Osta autumn and winter 2021/2022 collection takes you to a world of haute couture in a bottle.

OUTSIDE IN

As we finally begin to anticipate a drop in temperatures, we can look forward to the open windows and garden evenings of late summer, a time when our indoor and outdoor living spaces become one. This month, we’re looking at ways to bring the outside in with style, while preparing for the chillier months ahead.

68 www.ohlalamag.net OHLALA Homes
MARTA DZEDYSHKO ON PEXELS

Going Green

The first option when putting together a garden-style room is always plants and, if you’re blessed with high ceilings and a large living room, embrace the idea of ‘the more, the merrier’. You can get away with an abundance of flora in all shapes and sizes and, sticking with the time-worn clichés, it can also be a case of ‘the bigger, the better’. Think ceiling-skimming Monstera in interesting pots, ignore the usual brass or plain ceramics in favour of something different, perhaps a hessian bag or aged copper-look. You don’t have to forsake the giants if your room is smaller, simply pick one large plant and then accompany it with some smaller companions. And, if you’re not keen on the hassle of caring for houseplants, you can still achieve this look using some of the very realistic synthetic options that are now widely available.

Up The Wall

Walls don’t have to be white! It’s a simple statement but one so many of us forget, particularly if living in a rental property. At the base level, go for a painted feature wall. For this scheme, anything from teal to a rich dark green would be perfect and, if you go for a plain painted wall, it’s the ideal space to showcase some gorgeous pale artwork. One big picture works really well but a large wall will also welcome a series of smaller prints or even 3D pieces grouped together.

Step it up a notch and choose one of the many stunning wallpapers that are around at the moment such as Madagascar Leaves from Boråstapeter, Kejsarkrona by Arne Jacobsen or Protea by Emma J Shipley. With fantastical designs like these, it’s tempting to leave the wall space to do the talking but don’t be shy of placing selected pieces of furniture close by such as metallic or painted shelving to add a slightly industrial feel. Go all out and commission your own mural. This is not as hard as it sounds since local artists are often more than willing and very able to interpret

your ideas, from a simple floral pattern to a full-on statement piece. The result will be stunning and truly exclusive. Or, if you really want to bring the garden into your living space, look into constructing a living wall. You’ll spot these in restaurants and hotels but there is no reason they can’t be adapted for an individual space.

Warm It Up

As the months progress, we’re likely to feel the need to warm the atmosphere at little. It’s a great excuse to shop for luxurious throws and pillows in eco-friendly wool, angora, cashmere, heavyweight crushed velvet or even faux fur. If your furniture has a bold pattern, it’s best to keep these plain and classy and choose colours to either tone with or contrast to your feature wall. However, if your main furniture pieces are plain then you have the choice of either simple block colours or patterned options. You can either drape them over the back of the furniture or fold neatly in a welcoming pile in a basket but whatever you choose, remember these are accent pieces, don’t let them takeover the room.

The Fun Factor

Yes, we appreciate the ethos of high design and recognise its appropriateness in formal settings. But, for a family home, there’s always room for a little fun. Try one of these fabulous hippos and you’ll be adding a unique piece to your home (each one is different) at the same time as doing some good. They’re made from discarded flip-flops by Ocean Sole, a Kenyan social enterprise project that removes trash from the oceans and coastlines and makes art to support marine conservation, while creating employment. This scheme also lends itself to a touch of steampunk sassiness, so why not add some industrial-inspired pure cheek. This lamp is a handmade, upcycled creation but there are plenty of options available from lighting and design stores.

The Art of Balancing Flavours

The dining experience at Saffron, Banyan Tree Doha at La Cigale Mushaireb’s signature Thai restaurant, preserves the Thai values of connection that create harmony among a variety of authentic and indigenous flavours, as OHLALA’s Emille Loyola-Artigas discovered.

70 www.ohlalamag.net

CHIC Eats

Thai food is known for its balance of many flavours in one dish: spicy, sweet, sour, salty and bitter – as well as the textures and aromas. The reliance on freshness as part of the dining experience and how the changing of the seasons plays a role in the selection of dishes. By satisfying the senses: sight, taste and smell, the creativity makes Thai food an experience unlike any other.

We were so thrilled for days leading up to our dinner at the new Saffron restaurant, Banyan Tree’s signature and award-winning eatery. A walk through the exquisitely designed lobby and 24 levels up takes you to an elegant reception, tranquil environment and an enchanting aroma that fills the air. Welcomed by our charming host and ushered to our table, we were immediately drawn to the spectacular views of the Doha skyline, which you can marvel at from all angles in the restaurant.

The menu is a collection of Thai staples, each dish enthusiastically presented to us by Milk, a member of the Thai team at Saffron, who knows all the dishes on the menu by heart. Our orders taken, we were served with Thai chips and dips, along with creative signature mocktails.

Thai food is traditionally spicy blending all the flavours in a dish – we requested a medium heat level. There was an unexpected ‘amouse bouche’, served before our starters. Crispy crusted shrimp spring roll, came with the refreshing Miang Kham (a bite-size wrap), a delightful pair of small nibbles promptly primed our palates for the next course.

Stunningly presented, the Khong Wang Ruam arrived at our table, a selection of freshly prepared Thai appetisers, with crispy rice noodle wrapped prawn, grilled tender chicken breast satay served with a dreamily tasty sauce, sea bass rice noodle roll and, our favourite among the ensemble, the Pomelo Prawn Salad.

71 www.ohlalamag.net

CHIC Eats

The most memorable in the appetisers queue was the Gai Thod Bai Makroot; fried and impeccably spiced chicken with kaffir leaf, flavoured with pepper and herbs, with a scrumptious crispy skin yet very tender inside. Although it comes with cheese and chilli paste dips, it is perfect on its own. Yum Ped Nahm Tok, for our salad, was spicy grilled duck salad, served with roasted rice powder and chilli-mint dressing immaculately complemented with fresh seasonal vegetables. We paired it with Som Tum Puu Nim, mildly spiced papaya salad artistically matched with portions of very tasty and crispy soft-shell crab, the epitome of a classic dish with an innovative twist that simply works.

The Thai gastronomic journey is not complete without soups, and our favourite was the Tom Yum Goong, the traditional spicy prawn soup with lemongrass and galangal. It was the best version we’ve had of this, from presentation to its divine aroma and distinct flavour. Chef Porntip Eurmanan explained the meticulous preparation that turned this into a masterful creation. The soups are served in a bowl and kept warm with a tealight candle and not very far away awaits our Tom Kha Gai, featuring chicken and infused with a flavoursome combination of galangal coconut broth, coriander and kaffir lime leaf.

Like a theatre performance, every move had its immaculate timing. The dishes were perfectly orchestrated, and the restaurant and kitchen were flawlessly in sync. Next to arrive was the pineapple sorbet, a refreshing taste

The world’s much-loved Thai main courses are on the menu. Meticulously arranged, was Phad Kaprao Nua, a stunning spread of soft and juicy wokfriend Australian beef tenderloin, served with hot basil and chilli, it’s easy to appreciate that it is one of the favourites from the menu. Next came Goong Thod Nahm Pla Waan, which is fried tiger prawns blended with the vibrant taste of sweet and sour tamarind sauce served with coriander salad, and then the aromatic flavours of Gaeng Kiew Waan Gai, the gently braised chicken curry, with the chicken so tender and infused with flavour, complemented with eggplants and sweet basil leaves, pedantically prepared for over four hours, served with crispy fish and boiled eggs. Our favourite from this course was the Khao Pad Saffron, the wok-tossed saffron rice, mixed with seafood, classic crispy shrimp and vegetables. The subtle yet enchanting taste blended impeccably with Gai Phad Med Mamaung Himmapharm, the wok-tossed chicken cashew nuts in a heavenly melded sweet chilli paste and oyster sauce.

After the savoury ensemble, your palates will certainly crave for some desserts, and what could be better than Saffron’s version of mango sticky rice, or the Khao Niew Mamuang and I-tim Kati. It’s an immaculate essence of sweet mango, sticky rice with just the right hint of coconut served with a scoop of creamy coconut ice cream. The perfect end to an exceptional gastronomic experience.

MASERATI LEVANTE THE 2021

MASERATI STRENGTHEN THEIR STANDING IN THE LUXURY SUV SEGMENT WITH THEIR LATEST GENERATION LEVANTE.

78 www.ohlalamag.net

DIVA Drives

Maserati have been in the premium car manufacturing business for over a century now and show no signs of slowing down. Having entered into the luxury SUV segment only a few years ago with the Levante, this prestigious brand has ensured that every new generation model is more impressive than its predecessor. We at OHLALA were delighted when offered the rare opportunity to test drive the new Maserati Levante, compliments of the proficient team at Maserati Doha, a test drive we are sure to remember for many years to come.

The moment we laid eyes on the new Levante Gransport; we were in love. This new generation model is a beauty to behold, and we took our time slowly inspecting the vehicle, taking in every magnificent detail. At the front end, the imposing grille, inspired by the Alfieri concept, is accentuated by the flow of the front wings which in turn emphasise the shape of the engine compartment lid. The powerful Full LED headlights converge with the Trident symbol sitting at the centre of the grille like a precious jewel. From the flanks, the Levante’s feline-inspired headlights point the eyes towards the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, seamlessly following the shape of the side windows. The muscular rear shoulders give this model its distinctive Italian style, whilst the profile of the SUV is defined by a swaged line running the full length of the vehicle. This line veers away from the signature side vents at the front and fades over the rear wing, defining its muscular shape and emphasising its underlying power. The profile view is completed with sporty 21-inch, light alloy wheels, complete with Trident design neatly integrated into the spokes. At the rear, the car is finished off perfectly with its stylish roof spoiler and dual twin exhaust system.

Slipping inside the interior, we were greeted by the Levante’s breathtaking Italian flair as well as the effective automatic four zone climate control. Feeling more like a first-class lounge than a car’s cabin, all the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout the vehicle are of a premium standard and no expense has been spared in the creation of this deluxe environment. The comfortable heated and ventilated leather front sport seats, with wraparound shape for extra support, are multi-adjustable and fitted as standard in the new generation. The Levante range is now equipped with Maserati’s sport steering wheel that enhances the model’s sportiness and when coupled with the brushed steel sport pedals, recreates a sports GT setting. Thanks to the long wheelbase, there is a generous amount of space on offer throughout the vehicle with plenty of leg, shoulder and head room for all occupants. The luggage compartment has been designed to hold up to 580 litres, a total drastically increased with the rear seats folded down. There is also a 12V power socket in the luggage area, along with three more sockets inside the cabin. To ensure you, as the buyer, can express your own style, Maserati are providing a total of 28 interior colour combinations as well as contrast stitching options on the seats and headrests to select from.

The Maserati Levante boasts a highly intuitive interface unit, namely the Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC Plus). The tastefully designed dashboard and centre console have been created to perfectly house the 8.4-inch capacitive touchscreen, the cluster of drive mode buttons as well as the ergonomically designed rotary control and air suspension switch. The instrument panel is reminiscent of the layout in the Ghibli and Quattroporte models, complemented by ambient white lighting. Stunning aluminium and chrome finishes underscore the classy nature of this car, whilst the Harman Kardon Audio System with eight speakers provides the soundtrack for all your luxurious adventures. The new Levante is powered by a three-litre, twin turbo petrol engine that delivers 350hp and 500Nm of torque from 1,750 up to 4,750rpm. This combined with a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox, translates to an acceleration of 0-100km/h in around 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 251km/h. Everything about this vehicle felt fast and efficient. The traction control, stateof-the-art air suspension system, superior cornering ability as well as the uber responsive braking system, place you in firm control of the driving experience. A host of safety, security and assistance features are fitted as standard to always ensure the wellbeing of you and your loved ones. We at OHLALA cannot sing the praises of this outstanding premium SUV loudly enough.

THE POWER OF CLOTHING

HOW DOES YOUR MOOD INFLUENCE YOUR OUTFIT, AND HOW CAN YOUR CHOICE HELP YOU FEEL BETTER?

Even if you are not aware, your mood directly influences your choices when getting dressed in the morning. A study conducted by Professor Karen Pine, from the University of Hertfordshire in the UK, found that what a woman chooses to wear depends heavily on her emotional state. They also learned that the item most wear when depressed is a pair of jeans. One hundred women were asked what they wore when feeling down, and more than half of them gave this answer. Women also revealed that they would be 10 times more likely to wear a favourite dress when happy (62%) than when not feeling as joyful (6%). The psychologists concluded that the strong link between clothing and mood state suggests that we should get dressed in clothes that we associate with happiness, even when feeling low. It is a way to trick your brain and uplift your mood. “This finding shows that clothing doesn’t just influence others; it reflects and influences the wearer’s mood too. Many of the women in this study felt they could alter their mood by changing what they wore. This finding demonstrates the psychological power of clothing and how the right choices could impact a person’s state of happiness,” says Professor Pine. This means that even if you are not feeling your best, you can count on your wardrobe to help you feel happier or present yourself to others in a more upbeat state — just as a smile does.
