There are some things that we can't possibly change, and time is one of them. Time will continue passing whether we like it or not. What we can do is keep track of it in style. Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023, one of the biggest fairs dedicated to timepieces, happened last month, and the OHLALA team went there again this year to check it out. We share with you some of the new pieces we liked most. Our fashion pages are full of inspiring summer trends and we focus on the eyes with a new serum and mascara in our beauty pages. The travel and lifestyle brand TUMI has launched a limited-edition partnership with supercar maker McLaren. The TUMI | McLaren 60th Anniversary collection celebrates six decades since the founding of the automobile label. The capsule is the final instalment of the brand’s spring 2023 campaign entitled Unpack Tomorrow, featuring Lando Norris, the McLaren Formula 1 driver. “We are thrilled to have collaborated on this collection with McLaren, utilising their famous papaya colour and combining modern, lightweight materials to create luggage, bags and accessories that celebrate their 60th anniversary,” said Victor Sanz, TUMI’s Creative Director. The campaign features the racing superstar in a short-film montage of his travels, showcasing a hybrid McLaren Artura supercar and the ways that his TUMI bags' performance matches his own.

Upgraded Streetwear

H&M has been collaborating with big names in the fashion industry since 2004 – Karl Lagerfeld was the first to design a capsule for the streetwear label. The latest collaboration to hit the stores on May 11 is with the iconic house of Mugler. Discussions for this partnership began before Manfred Thierry Mugler’s passing in January 2022. The collection unites the house’s history with its present and future, offering various Mugler classics and signatures. The pieces showcase the Mugler world today and the intriguing ways that the American designer Casey Cadwallader (Mugler’s Creative Director) has twisted and reinvented the brand to make it fresh and relevant for the new generation. “It is truly an honour to collaborate with H&M. The collection is a celebration of everything that defines Mugler as a house, and each piece is authentic Mugler, from the bodysuits, which have become a signature of ours, to the sharp tailoring and worked denim. It is a showcase of our icons,” said Casey Cadwallader. The limited edition includes womenswear, menswear and accessories.

Immortalised Karl

Another collaboration is between Bosa, an internationally known Venetian ceramics workshop, which has been creating completely handmade objects and pieces of furniture since 1976, and Karl Lagerfeld. The KARL LAGERFELD X BOSA collection is comprised of two distinctive sculptures inspired by the signature look that made Karl Lagerfeld an instantly recognisable figure. POP KARL is a humorous and playful representation embracing Karl’s irony and wit. Designer Elena Salmistraro uses colour and contrast to create a vivid, textured piece, while Nika Zupanc’s ROCK KARL captures his signature look in more monochromatic tones. Each piece measures 41cm in height and 18cm in width – a homage to the designer’s endless ability to create from an innovative perspective. The sculptures are limited-edition, handmade and crafted from ceramics, 24-carat gold and platinum paints.

Feminine Summer

Maison Chloé has teamed up with swimwear brand ERES on an exclusive collection. Chloé’s Creative Director, Gabriela Hearst, partnered with ERES and its Creative Director, Marie-Paule Minchelli, to craft unique swimsuits and bikinis. Chloé has made a range of beachwear essentials to complement the capsule, such as ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, eyewear and hats. The items are inspired by the maison’s design signatures, including broderie anglaise and trademark ‘C’ detailing. The Chloé X ERES swimwear is made from Peau Douce – an innovative second skin material created by ERES that combines elasticity, resistance, shape and comfort and comes in earthy colours inspired by the Mediterranean. A commitment to continuously improving environmental and social impact is reflected throughout the collection. The Peau Douce material is derived from castor oil-based polyamide, and the Patricia shirt and Paloma skirt are cut from embroidered linen. Linen cultivation emits fewer greenhouse gases and requires less water, making it a lower-impact material in nature compared to other conventional fabrics.

AN ODE TO TIMEKEEPING

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 –a journey into watchmaking and its marvels.

For a whole week, the Swiss city of Geneva stopped or better to say that it was beating to the rhythm of watchmaking movements with one the biggest fairs in the field: Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023. Activities ‘In the Salon’ happened on April 1 and 2 and ‘In the City’ ran from March 27 until April 1. During the fair, numerous innovations were presented to keep pace with the rapidly growing global watch market. The booths of the biggest players in the field were beautifully decorated and specially designed for the event. A large concentration of some of the most incredible timepieces in the world was under the same roof – an unforgettable celebration of these timekeepers that first appeared in the 15th century. The event was extended beyond Palexpo (the convention centre where the fair happened), and the ‘In the City’ experiences were as grand as the buzz in the event’s corridors. They marked a turning point in the development of Watches and Wonders Geneva, engaging the city and the general public, who were drawn by special events in the boutiques and at other points of interest in the watchmaking capital.

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 closed with record figures, with 43,000 unique visitors (22,000 in 2022) over the whole week, 5,400 retailers, 125 nationalities, and 35,000 overnight stays, while the number of end consumers doubled during the first five days.

In the following pages, we will bring some of the latest launches that happened at this extraordinary exhibition and around town. The OHLALAteam was there again this year and we had the opportunity to experience this fascinating event firsthand –we are looking forward to going back next year!

CLASSICS TRANSFORMED

Cartier has added a new timepiece to its Cartier Privé collection: the Tank Normale.

It is interesting to notice how Cartier sees time. They see it as cyclical instead of linear, explaining why the luxury brand is constantly engaged in transformation and reinvention and how Cartier watches make their mark in the present with an eye to the future.

Cartier’s new watch collections reflect this concept very well this year, with timepieces revisited by the maison and transformed through the prism of creativity. A selection of outstanding luxurious items is rethought: the elegant Tank Américaine, new interpretations of the Baignoire, Panthère, Santos de Cartier and the Clash [Un]limited watches. However, the spotlight goes to Tank Normale.

Each year, a rare timepiece enters the Cartier Privé collection, the meeting place for collectors celebrating the brand’s legendary models through watches produced in numbered limited series. Cartier Privé reveals its seventh opus: the Tank Normale. Created in 1917 by Louis Cartier and launched two years later, the Tank is one of the maison’s most remarkable creations.

The new version borrows the proportions and the bevelled sapphire crystal of the original and is available in yellow gold on a brown alligator strap and platinum on a black alligator strap. In addition, this model is supplied on a yellow gold bracelet or a platinum bracelet, with satin and polished finishes evoking the spirit of the 1970s.

Cartier has added a skeleton (when the inner work is exposed) movement to this emblematic model, accompanied by a 24-hour complication, marked by a sun and crescent moon, that is also skeletonised. While the minute hand turns around the dial in one hour, the hour hand goes round in 24 hours instead of 12 hours. As a result, daytime hours appear on the upper part of the dial and night-time hours on the lower part.

A limited edition of 50 numbered watches comes in yellow gold on a brown and green alligator strap with a blue sapphire cabochon on the winding crown and platinum on a burgundy and grey alligator strap with a ruby cabochon.

A version set with brilliant-cut diamonds completes the ensemble in a limited edition of 20 numbered pieces featuring an alligator strap in two shades of blue with a brilliant-cut diamond on the winding crown.

POWERFUL AS A LION

CHANEL Haute Horlogerie brings a new chapter to the Mademoiselle Privé collection with four new pieces.

Gabrielle Chanel, the founder and namesake of the CHANEL brand, was an iconic French fashion designer with a taste for luxury and creativity. To honour its founder, the Métiers d’Art collection is designed as a jewel box revealing the cherished symbols and objects she loved to surround herself with. The skills of the finest artisans make this collection an exclusive expression of expertise and savoir-faire. In 2023, CHANEL presents four new pieces in the Mademoiselle Privé collection celebrating Gabrielle Chanel’s star sign, Leo.

The Mademoiselle Privé Lion line brings a series of watches each hidden inside a button with a sculpted lion head. The Mademoiselle Privé Lion Cuff is an 18-carat yellow gold and titanium cuff with a black coating and a large lion head in yellow gold set with 252 brilliant-cut diamonds and onyx eyes, nose and ears. It hides the watch’s face which is made with a black-lacquered dial and an 18-carat yellow gold bezel set with 32 brilliant-cut diamonds. The Mademoiselle Privé Bouton Lion Cuff is a similar version, with a smaller lion head sculpted in 18-carat yellow gold with an 18-carat yellow gold dial set with 142 brilliant-cut diamonds. The Mademoiselle Privé Bouton Lion Watch has a satin-effect calfskin strap, an 18-carat yellow gold buckle and 47 brilliant-cut diamonds. To complete the collection, the Mademoiselle Privé Lion Necklace places the watch in an 18-carat yellow gold necklace set with black facetted onyx, 18-carat yellow gold spheres and 51 brilliant-cut diamonds.

NEW COLOURS AND SIZE

Chronographs in ceramic.

IWC Schaffhausen is a pioneer in the use of ceramic for watch cases. In 1986, the company introduced the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, the world’s first wristwatch with a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic. IWC was also one of the first watch brands to push forward the development of different ceramic colours.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Oceana (Ref. 389404) features a case made of blue ceramic, developed in collaboration with Pantone and inspired by the colour of the U.S. Navy’s working overalls. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN (Ref. 389401) is IWC’s first 41mm Pilot’s Chronograph in black ceramic – a Jet Black black zirconium oxide ceramic case. This marks the first time IWC offers the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 in a case made of ceramic – an extremely hard and scratch-resistant performance material.

Both timepieces are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69380 calibre, an extremely robust and reliable mechanical chronograph movement. This calibre family has been engineered with a strict focus on robustness, reliability and durability.

At the Watches and Wonders exhibition in Geneva, IWC Schaffhausen introduced its first 41mm Pilot’s

TRADITION MEETS MODERNITY

A model born from a combination of contemporary design and the wealth of Vacheron Constantin’s watchmaking heritage.

The new Traditionnelle tourbillon retrograde date openface watch design combines an avant-garde aesthetic, mechanical sophistication and the desire to share Vacheron Constantin’s creative expertise. A retrograde date display is one in which the indicator does not complete a full turn of the dial, instead travelling along its entire measurement segment and returning to its starting point. Complemented by a tourbillon stylised in the shape of a hollowed-out Maltese Cross, the retrograde date display gains depth in a functional and contemporary style. At Vacheron Constantin, retrograde displays first became popular in the 1920s, when the maison’s creations were inspired by the aesthetic principles of Art Déco, with extravagant touches. The opening uses the architecture of the 2162 R31 movement – with its slate grey shade achieved by an NAC (Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum Oxide) surface treatment – visible on both sides, highlighting its mechanical power.

Housed in an 18-carat pink gold case measuring 41mm in diameter and only 11.07mm thick, this new timepiece is eye-catching yet not heavy. The openface dial features the watch’s technical nature and meticulous and consistent attention to detail, fitted with a grey alligator strap secured by a pink gold folding clasp.

FUN, FUNCTION AND SPARKLE

ProPilot x Kermit Edition

This watch is a partnership with the TV show Sesame Street using one of its characters – Kermit, the frog. The timepiece is based on the 39mm titanium ProPilot X Calibre 400 with a green dial and a twist. On the first of every month, the date window at six o’clock is filled with a Kermit emoji – ‘Kermit Day’ is all about not taking life too seriously.

ProPilot Altimeter

The new ProPilot Altimeter has an improved altimeter module capable of indicating altitudes up to 19,700ft or 6,000m (two available configurations). The new watch’s case is made in lightweight carbon fibre produced using an innovative process developed and perfected by a partnership with 9T Labs.

Aquis Date Diamonds

This is Oris’ first watch with a dial and bezel set with lab-grown diamonds. The bezel is set with 48 brilliant-cut, lab-grown diamonds and 44 diamonds are set into the dial. In total, the watch comes with 1.2 carats of diamonds.

Parmigiani Fleurier presents timepieces displaying three calendars: Gregorian, Islamic and Chinese.

Parmigiani Fleurier has created a trilogy of watches made in platinum that bring three different calendars using their alphabets. The Gregorian calendar is a solar dating system adopted by most of the world using Western-Arabic numbers. The Islamic calendar is a traditional lunar calendar and uses Eastern-Arabic numerals. The Xiali calendar brings the complex Chinese system based on lunar and solar elements with Chinese numerals.

Human history has always sought to control time, its flow and its predictability to organise and impart a distinctive rhythm to social, religious and agricultural life. The calendar is a universal concept enabling us to identify dates that appear like milestones. All civilisations have created them according to their perception based on the path of the sun, moon or both. While time is the same for everyone, its reading and measurement are specific to each human society.

The three watches are made in Platinum 950 with a sandblasted finish. The indices come in 18-carat gold rhodium-plated appliques; the moon phase is represented in blue aventurine. This exceptional trilogy is issued in a strictly limited edition of three box sets.

Bell & Ross gives an opulent twist to its BR 05 –painting it in gold and green. The new model has been designed for urban explorers.

The new BR 05 Green Gold complements the Bell & Ross BR 05 family. The BR 05 design is inspired by the iconic BR 03 but with a more refined style. It integrates the case and bracelet, resulting in a clean, stylish design with an edgy aura. The urban model launched in 2019 has been a great success for the brand.

The distinctive green colour of the dial characterises this new collection. The painted metal plate that serves as the base of the dial has a sunburst effect, changing colour when tilted. Depending on the reflections hitting its surface, it varies between an almost fluorescent shade to dark bottle green.

Made in 18-carat 5N gold, it gives the illusion of a gold ingot for the wrist. The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the beating heart of the automatic BR-CAL.321 mechanism, with an oscillating weight that is also adorned in gold – a third off-white shade to ensure better readability in the dark.

The integrated bracelet is designed entirely in satin-brushed gold; only the small links have a polished finish. A second alligator-leather strap is available in a classic style that pairs well with this elegant timepiece. This is the first time the BR 05 has featured a leather strap.

Not everyone is so lucky to go for a massage after a busy day at work (or at home; we know how hectic a day can be in the life of a stay-at-home mum), but everyone should! At least once a month, we all deserve to destress, put our phones on silent mode for an hour, and let ourselves be pampered. This month, my relaxation session happened at The Ritz-Carlton Spa.

The reception area is spacious, with luxurious pink velvet sofas and acid green cushions. Rezel, the spa receptionist, was waiting for me with a big smile. It was my first visit to The Ritz-Carlton Spa, so after giving me a health form to fill out, Rezel took me for a walk around to show me the facilities. After passing through the ladies’ area glass door, we entered this incredible beauty haven – a space much bigger than I expected. The décor of wood panels and cream upholstery gives a calming yet elegant vibe. The whole area works with the concept of circles, which offers a cosy ambience with round ottomans, cabinets and curved walls. The changing rooms have a coat of floral wallpaper to add a feminine charm, and indirect lighting gives a sense of intimacy. Beautifully illuminated alcoves highlight the two brands The Ritz-Carton Spa uses: the British ESPA (body, face and scents) and the French Valmont (face and fragrances). It is very tempting to leave with a few items as they are some of the most praised brands worldwide for spa care.

Moving forward, we reached the treatment rooms, all gracefully named after flowers and herbs such as lavender, juniper and thyme. But the crème de la crème in this lavish scenario was behind another glass door – a jaw-dropping thalassotherapy pool. With an eye-catching statue in the middle and a glass dome on top, its natural light illuminates the whole space. Unfortunately, I would not have time to enjoy it, but I will on my next visit.

It was time to return to the changing area where my therapist, Jero, was waiting for me. I slipped into a robe in no time, and we headed to the Marjoram room. The space was cosy and perfect, making me feel like the world was far away behind the closed door. My therapy for the day was the Relaxing Massage, and Jero gave me two options of ESPA oils to smell and choose from. I went for the energising option, made with eucalyptus and peppermint.

I then put my phone away (staying one hour without my mobile is not something I do very often) and laid down on the pleasantly warm bed. Jero closed the curtain at the door, blocking the light from the corridor and creating a lovely atmosphere.

When I was filling out the form, it asked what kind of pressure I wanted and which body parts I would like my therapist to focus on. I opted for medium pressure and, as usual, I requested extra attention to my shoulders and back areas. After talking to Jero, she decided I would benefit if she combined the massage with hot stones.

A hot stone massage is a type of therapy that helps relieve tense muscles, reduces stress and anxiety and promotes sleep. Jero noticed, as soon as she touched my back, that I carried all my tension there. Sometimes it does feel like I am holding the world on my shoulders, but I can be dramatic at times. However, the multiple knots proved that I might not be exaggerating. The relaxing massage became more of a session to try to remove at least some of them. Jero was patient and incredibly skilled. Her expertise in spotting my real needs and treating them with the best technique available was a highlight. I appreciated that even if you go for a relaxing massage, the therapist will cater to your needs instead of opting for a generic treatment. After one hour of pure delight, mixed with a few moments of pain (the knots were not giving up easily), it was time to say goodbye. Jero asked if she could do anything else for me, and I replied that we could start our session all over again; we laughed, and I promised to return.

On my way out, I met Tania, the Spa Supervisor, who told me more about their commitment to treating the body and mind with various therapies. The menu is extensive with something for everyone – without forgetting that the specialised team is there to help you choose the best option. She also showed me the Spa Boutique that offers ESPA home diffusers, Coola sunscreen, an eye-catching clothing line, beautiful jewellery, and a selection of The Ritz-Carlton branded T-shirts, water bottles and more. Eye-catching pieces are at the core of this capsule from MAX&Co., designed by Duro Olowu.

MAX&Co. is a contemporary Italian fashion brand with original and versatile collections worn by stylish women around the world. The latest chapter in its &Co.llaboration SS2023 series brings a partnership with British-Nigerian designer and curator Duro Olowu.

The designer is well-known for his mesmerising use of print and colour. His deep knowledge of art history sets the tone for his creations and, for this capsule, the work of Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri has guided Duro to develop these pieces. “My collection for MAX&Co. is inspired by his beautifully poetic, dreamy, colourful and vivid photographs of Italy in the 1970s and 1980s,” says the designer. “I imagined the artist extending his travels to other parts of the world like Bamako in Mali and Saint Louis in Senegal, to capture with his camera the same powerful and captivating sunburnt colour images and vivid moments as he did in Italy.”

The result is the People, Places, Colour collection, a joyful and confident capsule made for women who are endlessly curious. Bold stripes, romantic florals and striking geometric prints are interlaced. The main colours are azure blue, hot pink and ‘Ghirri orange’, evoking a sense of wanderlust. Tailoring, dresses and shirts are intricately cut yet easy to wear. This month, OHLALA spoke to Nada Alawi, Founder & Creative Director of ANNADA, about her unique brand and passion for art.

OHLALA - Before entering the fashion world, you worked with safety in the workplace. What made you enter the art and fashion world?

Nada Alawi - Mine and my sister’s passion for art started as a hobby and grew to become much more. We built a whole business around this concept because we believe that art is a way of communication, it is a language and a voice.

OHLALA - ANNADA started as a company with the gifting concept. However, it has grown exponentially, and recently you released a new clothing collection. Can you tell us more about the company’s journey?

Nada Alawi - The art of gifting is at the heart of each ANNADA product, whether it be a gift to yourself or someone dear. Our initial collection had scarves of different sizes and materials. The clothing line was created from the desire to be enveloped in art; each piece of our apparel is a statement element that will draw attention at any event. We have continued our expansion to include over 100 product lines that vary between scarves, clothing, accessories, stationery and homeware accessories.

OHLALA - What makes ANNADA so unique?

Nada Alawi - There are many aspects. First, the story; each art piece is paired with a story that evokes feelings and sentiments. This added layer of depth within the art item allows the viewer to observe what they haven’t before in the artwork. Second, its versatility. ANNADA scarves can be worn in many ways, presented in a how-to-wear guide that comes with them. Third, each product is a piece of art at its core. Curated from regional artists, we transform the works into wearable pieces, taking art beyond the canvas. Fourth is the gifting concept. Each ANNADA product is wrapped in our signature teal box and silver ribbon, which makes the perfect gift for yourself or loved ones. It’s also important to highlight that each product is created with the concept of ‘living in art’ to bring art closer and promote joy and happiness.

OHLALA - The materials you use are of high quality. How do you select them?

Nada Alawi - Our artisans work meticulously to weave the finest materials, amplifying the colour in each artwork while still offering the most beautiful and comfortable drape that transforms art into luxury. Whether silk, canvas or wood, we only choose the best quality for our pieces.

OHLALA - Every company has a story, but ANNADA seems to have a more profound purpose. What message do you want to spread with your brand?

Nada Alawi - Our main purpose has always been spreading happiness through art; we always choose art that gives joy to people and will instantly lift their mood. We also aim to offer a marvellous gifting experience and to provide quick style solutions for women on the go.

OHLALA - ANNADA has become a reference for gifting someone something representing Bahrain/the Middle East. It’s like giving a piece of the region to someone leaving or to a family member living abroad. How do you feel about the brand’s significance in so many people’s lives?

Nada Alawi - We are flattered to hear that ANNADA is the choice of many people for gifting. It is lovely to see people choose our pieces as souvenirs and understand that our carefully created items carry a hidden message and tell many stories through art.

OHLALA - What do you think about Bahrain’s art and fashion scenario?

Nada Alawi - Our beautiful Bahrain is rich in folklore. We aim to share tales from our country through art and heart-warming experiences. Overall, the art scene in Bahrain is wonderful. It is filled with creative people that keep impressing us all.

OHLALA - Which places in Bahrain should people visit?

Nada Alawi - Bahrain is filled with fantastic spots. I love the beauty, intimacy and great experience of the historical houses of Muharraq and the different art galleries around the island. Bahrain Fort is also one of the country’s many historical and mesmerising places. The National Museum is an amazing destination and it is definitely worth a visit. I also love attending concerts at Al Dana Amphitheater.

GREEN SOLUTIONS

Sustainability is the way forward, but how can you make your home more environmentally friendly? We bring some ideas!

If you are planning to re-design or build your home from scratch, there are many alternatives to embrace in this exciting process. With much research and technology being used to develop innovative materials and construction styles, building a house or renovating it with an ecological perspective has become more accessible.

You can begin reducing the impact on the environment by making it energy efficient. Installing high-quality windows with adequate insulation is a good starting point. Air conditioners blasting 24 hours a day for most of the year is a reality in this part of the world, and well-sealed windows keep the cool air inside, saving electricity.

Another idea that needs a bit more investment but would work wonders here is solar-powered homes. The solar panels are usually placed on the roof of a house, and the heat absorbed is used to generate electricity and heat water. Sun is something we don’t lack here, and using this renewable energy is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint (the total amount of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, generated by our actions). Moving onto something more advanced, we have the Passive Houses. They follow a set of design principles using rigorous standards for energy efficiency to reduce the building’s ecological footprint. They are built with an airtight construction style, superior insulation and triple-glazed windows. They also use efficient façades with innovative systems to cool down the building in summer and keep it warm during winter, such as the water-filled glass (WFG) system. The WFG window contains a thin layer of water between glass panels that absorbs heat from sunlight. When the sun’s rays penetrate the glass, the windows keep the buildings cool as the water absorbs external and internal heat. This warm water is then pumped through sealed pipes to a storage tank. When the outdoor temperature drops, the stored warm water can be brought back to the walls to reheat the building using a monitoring system similar to central heating.

Tech solutions are also becoming popular with domotic homes, also known as smart homes, that help with energy efficiency by remotely controlling lights, heating, shutters and air conditioning systems. Automating a home aims to keep the house cooler or warmer, depending on the season, at a minimum cost, benefiting the environment. There is also something a bit more challenging to sustain in the Middle East due to the harsh climate, but green roofs are pretty trendy in big cities. Apart from being a beautiful landscaping decoration, they are primarily a super-efficient insulation to a home, preventing energy loss. They also increase oxygen levels and protect a roof from the continuous attacks of wind, rain and ultraviolet light, helping your rooftop to last longer.

Eco-friendly ideas can also be found in interior design, and there are some projects worth highlighting:

PET LAMP

In the summer of 2011, the Spanish designer Álvaro Catalán de Ocón was invited by psychologist and conservationist Hélène Le Drogou to be part of an interesting project focusing on the reuse of PET plastic bottles and to give his point of view as an industrial designer. The PET bottle was chosen for its very short life span compared to the time it takes to decompose and even the incredible amount of energy necessary to produce and recyle it. With this in mind, the PET Lamp project was born. The initiative combines plastic PET bottles with basket-weaving traditions found in many communities around the globe. The neck of the PET bottle is used as the top part of the lamp (to pass the electrical components), and its body is cut into strings that are then weaved with natural material. In 2020 they launched the PET Lamp Bolgatanga collection in collaboration with the weavers of Ghana’s Baba Tree Basket Company. The Bolgatanga collection has become one of the brand’s best-sellers. Since PET Lamp’s launch in 2012, they have taken the project all over the globe, working with communities and artisans to build eight unique collections.

KRILL DESIGN

Another interesting project is developed by Krill Design, an Italian design studio specialised in developing home products within a 100% circular and sustainable process. It was created in 2018 by Ivan Calimani, Martina Lamperti and Yack di Maio, who share a passion for innovation, sustainability and design.

The three founders decided to experiment with innovative materials, which, combined with the 3D printing method, gave life to a successful and environmentally friendly production process. They have created an ingenious material called Rekrill, which is 100% biodegradable and made with by-products of the food chain. They use different types of homogeneous organic waste, such as peels, shells, seeds and coffee grounds. The final objects are lamps, fruit bowls, vases, organisers and more. Ohmie, the orange lamp is manufactured with the peels of Sicilian oranges transformed into a 100% natural and compostable biomaterial. This product is an example of a 100% circular item, with a short supply chain and entirely Made in Italy. Each Ohmie is made from the peel of two to three oranges and saves one kilo of CO2. The table lamp is equipped with a light bulb, has a USB connection and the intensity of the light is adjustable.

CICIL

You can never have enough rugs and CICIL is a women-owned and sustainable rug brand based in North Carolina in the United States that offers an eco-friendly solution in this field. As textile-savvy and students of sustainability, founders Caroline Cockerham and Laura Tripp built a way to make home textiles outside of the usual carbon-intensive production for these types of décor. Their braided carpets are made with natural and renewable materials (no synthetic or petro-chemical based fibres, including polyester) with a sustainable supply chain to make their products traceable.

They source and manufacture in small batches, close to home, from traceable and responsible origins. They work directly with farmers and co-ops to assemble their naturally coloured, undyed wool. Renewable fibres, like wool, have inherent performance characteristics ranging from microbial resistance to durability, breathability, softness and more. CICIL’s wool comes from Romney, Wensleydale and Cotswold sheep, and they utilise all of their natural colours, ranging from white to blond, grey, brown and black. Using dark colours of raw wool is unconventional because they can’t be dyed, limiting their commercial applications (hence the term ‘black sheep’). By using the whole colour range, they are able to divert fibre from the waste stream. The result is a long, durable and soft fibre that takes on shades of grey when blended. CICIL’s pieces are made to order, and they ship rugs out within three to six weeks.

As we pulled up to Mandarin Oriental, we were still buzzing from the glimpses of the vibrant city we experienced en route. Even from the car, all the sights, sounds and smells beckoned us to explore this proverbial melting pot of the old and the new.

Nestled in the Naile Sultan pine grove in the sophisticated Kuruçeşme district, Mandarin Oriental sits alongside the shimmering shoreline on the European side of Istanbul. Its perfect location provides panoramic views across the Bosphorus Strait and a central location to explore the famous city.

The composition of the hotel itself is a marvel, with its low-rise design, elegant marble-clad façade and Ottoman-style slate roof. Lush gardens and private wooden pavilions along the waterfront add to the luxurious and welcoming nature of the premises.

Once inside, the marble, bronze and glass elements of the interior design create a contemporary setting that is both alluring and comforting. The hotel’s five-star status is always on full display, and we felt that we could have been the only guests there, thanks to the staff’s attentive service.

ROOMS FIT FOR ROYALTY

As we made our way along the pristine hallways of the hotel, we were fortunate enough to inspect various accommodations on offer to guests. Each guestroom and suite is spacious, fully equipped and offers picturesque views of the Bosphorus.

Most options include balconies or terraces and feature striking design elements comprising ornate bronze and onyx marble. Organic textures and patterns with bespoke metal and other details are also included in the impressive interior designs.

Many of these rooms are adaptable for family needs, and the hotel provides 24-hour room service to all guests.

Our suite was as beautiful and spacious as you’d expect from the high calibre of Mandarin Oriental. The highlight was, simply, one of the most comfortable beds we have ever had the pleasure of sleeping in.

CULINARY SPLENDOUR AT OLEA BOSPHORUS & THE BAR

On the first night of our stay, we were invited to the celebrated Olea Bosphorus & The Bar, an exceptional venue serving up authentic Italian flavours. Once seated, we ordered an array of options from the impressive menu, and thoroughly enjoyed every dish laid on the table. The octopus carpaccio was perfection and the oxtail fettuccine was worth every bite.

NOVIKOV ISTANBUL

On our second night, we indulged at the world-renowned, all-day restaurant, Novikov.

This spectacular ground-floor location offers a fusion of Asian, Mediterranean and Italian dishes, along with magnificent views of the Bosphorus. We found the pan-fried Asian delicacies particularly appetising, and we were hugely impressed by the quality of the ingredients and the warm service.

There are four additional dining venues, including: the contemporary Novikov Lounge Bar, the alfresco Novikov Pool Bar, the soothing Bosphorus Lounge and the enticing The Mandarin Cake Shop.

RELAX AND RECHARGE AT THE SPA

Perhaps our favourite individual experience at the hotel was our time at the luxurious spa, where we indulged in a relaxing 60-minute massage. The aroma of the signature ginger oil and the soothing pressure eased tired muscles and left us feeling deeply pampered and relaxed.

The spa’s 3,500sq/m facilities include 11 treatment rooms, a VIP treatment room, a sauna, a steam room and gender-separate Hammams, amongst other options.

At the end of our stay, we were transported back to the airport in a stylish BMW, feeling both tranquil and invigorated, thanks to having Mandarin Oriental as our home in Istanbul.

African-inspired cuisine is what’s on the menu at Kula and Sara Waddah went there to check it out.

Taking a drive down to Riffa, we went to explore the latest venue at RUW corner, where an exquisitely striking, vibrant and distinctive entrance was just waiting for us to step through into an alternate world.

A magnificent large elephant sculpture welcomed us before the loud bang of an African drum heralded the beginning of our culinary adventure. With hand-crafted interiors and vibrant colours everywhere I turned, stepping into Kula felt like taking a trip back to the motherland. I was loving this already.

With an interior that was put together with fine attention to detail, the restaurant had been split up into different sections – each inspired by one of the magnificent wonders found around the African continent. Starting with the East African country of Uganda which is known for its exquisite bamboo, The Forest is centred right in the middle of the restaurant and features plush couches for guests to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Strolling through the restaurant, we headed towards a semi-open section where the rays of sunshine were streaming in through large windows, highlighting the incredible patterns and stonework that has been inspired by Great Zimbabwe’s most enduring and impressive stone houses. It wasn’t even over by then. The next stop was The Lodge, a family-friendly, intimate, carefully decorated section that even included a beautiful fireplace – radiating the Mzansi experience from central South Africa.

CHIC Eats

You could really spend hours marvelling at the different colours, cultures and attention to detail that have gone into Kula – meaning eat in Swahili, the official tongue of several African nations – which all come together beautifully to create an environment that allows guests to not only feel the hospitality but the warmth and love of the various wonders of this rich continent, which some of us have yet to experience fully.

We were seated at a magnificent stone table and got ready to explore what the kitchen had in store for us. We let the staff make the choices for us as we knew that they were the experts.

Starting us off with refreshments from their bar, our entire party was able to enjoy a drink that really spoke to our taste buds – my favourite was the Stambo, which was a refreshing mix of lychees, raspberries and bubblegum! The bubble-gum gave the drink a fun characteristic and it felt like just the perfect combination of tasty and fresh. The Appletini was another hit – fresh, fun and the perfect pairing for our starters.

It’s notable to mention that the profits of the Muranga drink, a creamy avocado blend, are donated to Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Congo, which was really sweet to learn. It’s heartwarming to know that Kula not only values African cultures but is also making sure to give back to the continent.

My curiosities about Kula had been through the roof since its opening, and so, I was on the edge of my seat with excitement as I saw our first dish come out, a Moroccan-inspired Couscous Salad. Definitely not like any other couscous salad I’ve had before, this one included roasted butternut squash, pomegranate jewels, homemade fried labneh balls and was finished with a light, zesty dressing that gave the entire dish a kick! Alongside the salad, we also received Moroccan Matbucha, which was a tangy combination of fresh tomato, onion and capsicum tartare all together, served with a crusty house-baked garlic baguette.

Next up – Nigerian Jollof. Now, if you know anything about Jollof, you’ll know that it’s a staple in West African cuisine and has its own special characteristics when cooked in Nigeria and Ghana. I was delighted to see that Kula is one of the first restaurants in Bahrain to serve this as a sharing dish, accompanied by fried plantain and spit-roasted lamb. The rice was perfectly spiced and stewed with tomatoes and roasted bell peppers and trust me when I say we made sure nothing was left behind. Leaving West Africa and travelling to The Horn, we next got the Ethiopian Awaze Beef Tibs, which are sautéed beef cubes that have been garnished with herbs, green pepper and spiralised chilli. A true staple of Ethiopian gastronomy, we were also given bread to dip in some Niter Kibbeh, a spiced clarified butter with aromatic spices. I was truly on cloud nine floating with elation.

To be honest, all the different flavours we were experiencing only made us want to try more tastes from Africa, but we were also content with saving some space for dessert. We knew that there would be a show and something very special coming up.

The chitter chatter of the staff with big grins on their faces let us know we were really in for a treat. With a grand drum and dance procession that had us up on our feet with excitement and eagerness, out came the African Gold. Golden pumpkin fritters, edible gold, candied pumpkin and Madagascan vanilla ice cream sat in a deep dish. I carefully watched as it was doused with caramel sauce; it was a moment I will never forget. Provoking all my five senses, touch and sight for the interior, hearing for the perfectly curated Spotify playlists the staff had put together and smell and taste for each item we delved into, I’m super excited to have Kula on the island, and I’m looking forward to becoming a regular for sure.

WE GOT THE CHANCE TO PUT THE LATEST ALL-ELECTRIC SUV FROM MERCEDES-BENZ THROUGH ITS PACES.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB 350 4MATIC is a mid-size SUV that’s been brought into the electric age. It is the highly anticipated fully electric addition to the Mercedes-EQ range. This latest three-pointed model is based around the brand’s popular GLB-Class chassis, but instead of the regular combustion engine it has been modified to accommodate a dual-electric motor architecture. The vehicle is a durable and practical SUV that combines powerful proportions with compact dimensions and is very much capable of providing a generous amount of space for up to five occupants and in some cases seven, with an optional third row.

This month, the OHLALA team had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the new Mercedes-Benz EQB 350 4MATIC, thanks to the wonderful team at Al Haddad Motors.

EXTERIOR

The EQB 350 has a modern design that’s certain to grab attention, it sure did get ours! The model somehow manages to interpret Mercedes-EQ’s progressive luxury in an edgy and particularly characterful way. On first look, the EQB 350 has a striking but straightforward styling with its boxy silhouette and high roofline. The front grille is blank with a gloss black finish and showcases the characteristic Mercedes-Benz star bang in the middle. Full width LED lighting elements accent the vehicle’s front end. While the daytime running lights of the full-LED headlamps, ensure a high level of recognisability both in daylight and at night.

DIVA Drives

The confident presence of the model continues at the flanks with its sleek yet considered lines running from tip to trunk. Moreover, the 19-inch, five-spoke light alloy wheels give the EQB 350 a powerful stance on the road. As a further distinctive design feature, the squarer rear bumper’s LED tail-light assembly merges seamlessly into the tapering LED light strip across the width of the tailgate. A standard-fit reversing camera has been integrated into the automatically pivoting Mercedes-Benz star at the back.

INTERIOR

As we step inside the vehicle, the interior of the EQB 350 is full of highquality materials and exhibits luxury-level build quality with excellent leather and soft-touch fabrics. The cabin is exquisitely designed with ambient lighting, there’re 64 colours to choose from, and well-appointed with elegant metallic accents that lend an upscale look to the space. The model’s steering column is four-way manually adjustable to help find an ideal driving position and view of the instruments. Moreover, as a surprising departure from the usual, the gear selector is situated beside the sturdy flat-bottom steering wheel.

The front seats are power adjustable and provide four-way power lumbar support which we really liked. A memory system for each of the front seats recalls three stored positions with the touch of a button. Meanwhile, the roomy three-passenger second row seats include a centre armrest with built-in cupholders.

It has five adjustable vents in the dash and a pair of rear-cabin air vents to help maintain an optimal temperature for everyone. Owing to its boxy shape there is ample headroom and legroom within the cabin. While the large panoramic sunroof further enhances the roominess of the cabin’s space. Additionally, the second-row seats conveniently fold down in a 40/20/40 split, offering a variety of cargo and passenger configurations.

INFOTAINMENT & CONNECTIVITY

The EQB 350 features Mercedes-Benz's MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system consisting of a touchscreen, touch-sensitive control pad and voice recognition. Modern and vibrant in appearance, the MBUX tech interface is packed with customisation features that took us a little getting used to but, once learnt, it proved simple to use. Two screens composed of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system are integrated into a single wide screen that is central to experiencing the MBUX interface in the best way, and it looks great! A large touchpad controller in the centre console in place of the gear shifter let us operate the in-dash central touchscreen while we let our hand rest comfortably at our side, a feature we found quite handy. A total of four ports are provided in the first and second seating rows. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available and let us enjoy a variety of audio, entertainment and communication apps via an interface. Additionally, the EQB’s Advanced Sound System gave a rich and clear sound which we thoroughly enjoyed.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

After exploring and getting better acquainted with the luxury, technology and everything else the model had to offer, we were raring to see what the EQB’s performance would be like once on the road. The EQB 350 4MATIC is equipped with an advanced battery system that uses a 70.5kWh battery located under the floor. It provides a range of up to 426km on a single charge. The model also has a fast-charging capability, which means you can charge the battery up to 80% in just 30 minutes, absolutely amazing! This all-electric vehicle certainly impressed us during our drive. It is capable of generating 288hp with 520Nm of torque, which translates to a surprisingly quick top speed of six seconds to get from 0-60km/h, and we experienced an impressive level of performance. As we tested out the three other available modes, the Sport Mode especially stood out and left us thrilled with the model’s handling and power when pushed, though it will drain the battery a bit sooner.

SAFETY & ASSISTANCE

The team at Mercedes-Benz have made sure to fit the EQB with an advanced range of safety and driver assistance capabilities. Some of the standard features include active brake assist, active blind spot assist, adaptive high beam assist, parking assistant with cross traffic assist, along with several airbags located throughout the vehicle and much more.

OUR VERDICT

The EQB 350 is the perfect combination of style and sustainability. On road the EQB is composed and smooth offering a highly stable and comfortable ride. The model’s advanced technology and sustainability features in our opinion surely make it a top choice for those who are environmentally conscious and also value luxury.

What have you done in the past hour? Are you counting the days until something special? The truth is that time regulates our lives, and Miss Ohlala wonders about it.

Time organises our daily lives, creates events and gives us a true feeling of living. But it is also something we tend to fight with. It’s, without a doubt, a fascinating topic for fiction stories. How many books, films and TV series have been created around time travellers and time machines? It feels like we want to control it. We are always trying to look younger and, as time machines go, we seem interested in changing history. But most of all, it seems there is never enough of it. Throughout history, there have been numerous ways to keep track of hours by using sundials, hourglasses and punching tablets. According to archaeological evidence, the Babylonians and Egyptians started to measure time around 5,000 years ago. Their particular interest was in creating some sort of calendar and time recording to regulate planting and harvesting cycles.

Nowadays, as we’ve seen in our coverage from Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023, the passage of hours is tracked in magnificent timepieces. Skilled horologists have been using technology and incredible materials to develop unique watches. Some of them even look like stunning jewellery pieces. However, we still haven’t managed to rule and manipulate time as we want.
