DIGITAL RETAIL AT ITS BEST

Batelco, part of the Beyon Group, unveiled its first fully-fledged digital experience shop at the newly opened Marassi Galleria Mall with an exclusive launch.

The outlet offers a convenient, contactless shopping experience designed to help elevate the customer’s journey and change the face of retail in Bahrain. It enables customers to complete all their transactions through a simple, smooth and hassle-free digital journey.

A special feature that sets the store apart from any other shop is the smart vending machine, the first-of-its-kind in Bahrain. It allows customers to purchase a new device on the spot with a few easy steps, without the help of a sales representative. Another unique aspect is the product display zone, where customers can compare up to three devices side-by-side and explore their specifications, assisting shoppers to make better buying decisions.

The outlet also includes advanced self-service kiosks that incorporate a wide range of functions, including the ability to activate a new eSIM or replace a SIM card, as well as upgrade a Postpaid or Prepaid or Fiber line. Customers can also refill a prepaid plan, inquire about their bill, make payments and much more.

“We are delighted to unveil this shop to our customers offering them a quicker and more convenient shopping experience,” said Aseel Mattar, General Manager Consumer at Batelco. “Now, customers can explore the details of the devices in the interactive product display zone and then make a purchase through our smart vending machine independently.

“We aim to continuously improve the customers’ digital retail experience and take it to the next level, and adding a smart vending machine alongside advanced self-service digital kiosks at the retail shop, is a big leap to elevating the experience further.”

The launch event showcased a live demonstration of a purchase through the new vending machine, which dispenses various types of devices and accessories.

Batelco aims to launch more of these machines in different areas of the Kingdom soon. The new shop is located on the ground floor of the Marassi Galleria Mall. ✤

FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE

Great news for budding racers as Bahrain International Circuit takes a major new initiative to nurturing motorsport talent with the launch of a new racing school.

The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) has joined hands with the French Winfield Racing School to launch The Winfield Racing School Middle East, which will be tasked with the mission of detecting, training and evaluating young motorsport talent from all over the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

Celebrating its 60th birthday this year, Winfield Racing School has an unrivalled reputation in Europe for the training and selection of talented young racing drivers. Between the mid 1960s and the end of the '90s, the school produced 30 Formula One drivers, including 10 Grands Prix winners and two World Champions: Damon Hill and the legendary four-time Formula One World Champion, Alain Prost.

Relaunched in 2016, the school has been involved in the early careers of reigning Formula 2 champion, Théo Pourchaire; Red Bull junior driver, Isack Hadjar; Scuderia Ferrari development driver, Arthur Leclerc, and 2024 F1 Academy debutant, Doriane Pin.

Bahrain International Circuit, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Bahrain Grand Prix this year – the first Formula One race in the Middle East – has largely contributed to the creation of a true motorsport culture in the region. In conjunction with Winfield Racing School, it intends to continue its efforts by promoting access to driving and motorsport professions for as many people as possible.

Together, with the support of the Bahraini authorities, Winfield

Racing School and BIC will develop a global education programme through a training centre on the Sakhir circuit capable of developing the most promising future drivers and mechanics. Additionally, the project will offer fantastic activation tools for businesses, VIPs, opinion leaders and key people by organising Formula 4 single seater driving experience days. This initiative also aims to spread further motorsport culture and deepen understanding of the sport in the Middle East.

Both organisations will strive to empower the next generation by giving them the tools to succeed in their careers, whether in mechanics, engineering, marketing or communications. The mission is to serve the professional ambitions of talents in the Middle East and help them realise their dreams.

“A partnership, such as the one we are developing with Winfield Racing School, is a natural progression for Bahrain International Circuit, given the work we do to support the next generation of drivers,” said BIC Chief Commercial Officer, Sherif Al Mahdy.

Frédéric Garcia, President of Winfield Group, said: “Discovering, training and evaluating potential young talented drivers will be our primary mission at the Bahrain International Circuit; but we will also develop the events side of the business.” ✤

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

The Holy Month is a time of giving. From food drives to donations, there are plenty of charities on the island that you can support. Check out our list and spread the kindness.

Ramadan is a time for reflection, personal spiritual growth and for giving back to the community. Although charitable acts are encouraged throughout the year, Ramadan is a good reminder to support those in need. In Bahrain, several charitable organisations are leading the charge to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the less fortunate.

A Box of Goodness

Founded in 2016, A Box of Goodness has a simple yet profound ethos of sharing blessings with the less fortunate. This unregistered charity receives no financial funding and relies solely on donations in kind. Each year, as part of their Ramadan Food Drive, they collect food donations and repackage them into boxes for needy Muslim families and individuals observing the fast. Foods that can be donated include dry, non-perishable items such as rice, dates, flour, dhal, oil, spices, pasta, sugar, tea, coffee, canned foods or meats.

The drive runs from March 1 to April 8 and the drop off points are at St. Christopher’s School, Nadeen School Bahrain and Bahrain Rugby Football Club.

GO: Follow the charity’s Instagram account @ aboxofgoodness for more information.

British School of Bahrain (BSB)

Following on from the success of previous years’ initiatives, the BSB Charity Committee is organising its Annual Ramadan Charity Appeal in partnership once again with the Migrant Workers Protection Society. This Ramadan, the goal is to surpass last year's success by raising more than 500 Ramadan boxes that contain basic food necessities. Like last year, these boxes will be distributed in various labour camps in Bahrain. The BSB Parent Community Ambassadors will also be collecting children's toys and clothes, which will then be re-packed and distributed by the BSB Charity Committee to underprivileged children in different support groups and orphanages in time for Eid.

GO: Call 1761 0937 or WhatsApp 3999 2410 for more information.

Indian Ladies Association (ILA)

The oldest expat ladies’ association in the GCC, the ILA has been organising special charity drives during Ramadan for several years. This year, it plans to distribute dry rations and meals at various labour camps at Tubli, Askar, Juffair and Manama. The charity drive will run throughout the Holy Month. The ladies from ILA will also hold the Ramadan Bake Sale, where bakers from all over the island unite to generate funds for ILA Sneha Recreation Centre, which runs free of cost and provides a safe haven for children with special needs. More details on all the initiatives will be announced soon.

GO: Follow ILA’s Instagram account @ilabahrain for more information.

There are plenty of other notable charities on the island that accept both financial and non-financial donations online, including Royal Humanitarian Foundation, Bahrain Red Crescent Society, Conserving Bounties Society (Bahrain Food Bank) and Kaaf Humanitarian, to name a few. All you need to do is open your hearts and discover the joy of giving!

TIMELESS TRADITIONS

Discover the essence of Ramadan through its rich tapestry of traditions. Join us as we explore cherished festivities, elegant attire and exquisite home décor that mark this special time of year and tell you where to find them.

Ramadan Fashion

Ramdan is a time of restraint and that’s true for dressing too. The Holy Month is all about modest dressing but that doesn't mean a compromise on style. While the men usually wear smart, traditional thobes, the women up their dressing game, especially on evenings out for Iftar or Ghabga. Beautiful flowy kaftans, intricately crafted jalabiyas and embroidered abayas make an appearance at most gatherings.

Intricate gold thread work takes the spotlight in traditional creations and dress fabrics can vary from soft comfy linens and chiffons to silky satins and even shimmery rayons. Colours can range anywhere from natural earthy tones and muted pastels to vibrant blues, greens and pinks.

Home Décor

Ramadan brings families and friends together in shared experiences, not only through food but also by welcoming others to your home. And decorating it for the festive season is an essential pleasure. From traditional carpets and ornate home items

to beautiful table settings, Ramadan accents are seen everywhere. One of the simplest ways people embellish their surroundings is through light, be it fairy lights outside the house or moon and star motifs adorning the living room. Ramadan lanterns, from small hanging ones to outdoor garden décor, are extremely popular and ideal for creating a serene ambience.

When entertaining, hosts enhance Ramadan food flavours with refined dining settings, including crockery, table runners and napkins, featuring classic mosaic or floral patterns. Accents of traditional green, vibrant blues and gold lend an elegant touch. Living rooms are brightened with decorative serving trays and sofas made more inviting with Ramadan-inspired throw cushions.

Gurgaon

Celebrated on the 14th day of Ramadan, Gurgaon is a custom that goes back hundreds of years to reward fasting children. Similar to Halloween, children dress up in traditional clothes and go from door to door collecting sweets and singing songs. Young girls wear colourful, embroidered jalabiyas, while boys don thobes, embellished jackets and caps. In the past, kids were given dates but this has now evolved into receiving sweets and nuts. It's also become customary to reward children with money in the form of coins, often gifted in cute little cloth bags.

RAMADAN WELLNESS

While fasting from dawn to dusk is a spiritual obligation for Muslims during the Holy Month, it is equally important to maintain good health throughout this period. Here are some essential tips for staying healthy and energised during Ramadan.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping yourself hydrated outside of fasting hours is extremely important during Ramadan. It's crucial to drink plenty of fluids between Iftar and Suhour. Opt for water as your primary choice and avoid aerated drinks such as sodas, as well as caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee, which can lead to dehydration. Remember, staying hydrated helps maintain bodily functions and prevents fatigue.

Eat Hydrating Foods

Make sure to include hydrating foods into your meals. Dishes like soups and stews, as well as fruits and vegetables that have a high water content, such as watermelon, squash and spinach, are a good choice. These will not only provide essential nutrients but also help to replenish any fluids lost during the fasting period.

Choose the Right Foods

Start your day with a balanced Suhour meal comprising of complex carbohydrates, such as fruit, vegetables, beans, chickpeas or lentils. These release energy slowly, keeping you energised throughout the fasting hours. Avoid fried and processed foods and instead go for more nutritious options, including low-fat dairy and healthy unsaturated fats, such as avocado, nuts, salmon, olives and olive oil.

Eat Slowly

For a more comfortable fasting experience, take your meals slowly to avoid overeating, particularly when breaking your fast. With mindful eating, you’ll not only help prevent any discomfort from overindulging, but you’ll also enjoy your food more!

Exercise Moderately

Although it’s important to stay active during Ramadan, heavy exercise while fasting can lead to dehydration and fatigue. Instead, try to limit yourself to moderate activity, such as walking after Iftar or before Suhour, so as not to put too much strain on your body.

Prioritise Sleep

Try to get at least seven to eight hours of quality sleep every night to support your overall health and well-being. A good night's sleep has countless benefits and will help rejuvenate your body and mind to keep you energised and alert while fasting.

Consult a Doctor

If you have any underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or cardiac issues, make sure to consult with your doctor before fasting.

DELICIOUSLY LOCAL

Food is a physical expression of the people living in a particular place. It tells a story about who they are, where they come from, as well as their culture and traditions.

Food also serves as a means through which we maintain connections to our ancestors and customs. We have always used food to socialise with others, be it with within our communities or outside of them. Simply put, our food is important.

FACT takes you on a journey of discovery to explore traditional Bahraini food. Read on to find out what’s popular and where to find it!

TRADITIONAL FLAVOURS OF BAHRAIN

Bahrain is a wonderful island country and quite the melting pot of customs and traditions, having welcomed and embraced various cultures. However, the indigenous Bahraini food is still preserved and is an integral part of the nation’s story. Like most countries in the Gulf, the Kingdom’s native food has a slight influence of Persian and Arabian flavours and preparations. But locally, it’s cooked in its own specific style and character. Traditional Bahraini cuisine uses simple elements, such as fish, meat, rice, dates and spices.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular local dishes.

Popular Favourites

Baid Tamat: A popular breakfast staple – scrambled eggs cooked with crushed tomatoes and aromatic spices.

Balaleet: A sweet and savoury vermicelli preparation, usually sweetened with sugar and cardamom, topped with an egg omelette, traditionally served at breakfast.

Harees: A well-known porridge-like dish, made with cracked wheat and meat, slow-cooked for more than eight hours, usually topped with melted butter, cinnamon.

Machboos: Considered the national dish of Bahrain, it is extremely popular. Seasoned rice along with chicken (sometimes fish) is prepared with a blend of aromatic spices, such as cloves and mainly black lime (also known as lumee), garnished with fried onions and served with tomato sauce.

Muhammar: A distinctive sweet rice dish made using dates or sugar, rose water and cardamom, usually served as a side dish alongside grilled or fried fish.

Mumawwash: An aromatic rice preparation cooked with green lentils and spices, topped with dried shrimp.

Quzi (Ghoozi): A popular dish of roasted lamb, slow cooked with spices, served on a bed of rice with fried onions, nuts and raisins.

Local Catch

Because of its location in the Gulf, Bahrain also offers a great choice of fresh fish. A favourite is hammour (grouper), which is typically served grilled, fried or steamed. Then there’s Safi (rabbit fish) and Sobaity (sea bream), both equally popular local varieties, usually served with rice.

Street Food

Bahrain also dishes up some delicious snacky street food, such as falafel – deep fried chickpea fritters, served in Arabic pita bread pockets with fresh greens and sauces; shawarma –chicken or lamb meat carved from a rotating spit, wrapped in pita bread with salad and sauces; malgoum – shawarma served in Indian paratha bread with cheese and French fries; the alltime-favourite samboosa – deep fried stuffed pastries filled with cheese, vegetables or meat; and many others.

Sweet Delights

Bahraini Halwa: A favourite traditional dessert enjoyed by all, made with cornstarch, sugar, saffron, rosewater and nuts.

Luqaimat: Donut-like fried dumplings with saffron and cardamom, soaked in sweet syrup.

Besides food, Gahwa or Arabic coffee is another favourite – it has a distinct cardamom flavour and is usually served with dates. Although, the Indian-inspired milky, spiced karak chai is becoming increasingly popular too.

MONTERO GETS NEW LEASE OF LIFE

FACT spent the day in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport GLS, a spacious and capable sports SUV with a respectable range of technical features.

• ISLAND RIDES
ISLAND RIDES •

It’s hard to believe that after all our years of test-driving quality vehicles, this was the first time we found ourselves behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Montero. It was, however, worth the wait as the new Montero Sport proved to be a capable 4x4, one showcasing appealing interior and exterior designs along with convenient tech.

Updated Exterior

Our first impression of the latest generation Montero was that it now has a bigger, bolder and more aggressive exterior design than its predecessors. In our opinion, this rugged off-road SUV definitely looks the part.

The front end of the GLS features a sleek and stealthy black grille, complete with a large Mitsubishi logo right in the centre. Chrome bars in the upper grille section are flanked by sweptback LED running lamps, bestowing the vehicle with a sporty flair. Combined with the LED headlamps and foglamps, this arrangement results in an eye-catching face that announces this premium SUV in style.

The solid look and feel of this quality car continued at the sides. We admired the clean body lines running from front to back and the well-designed, low side bumpers sitting flush with the body.

Our vehicle was fitted with two-tone, 18-inch alloy wheels, with larger than average hubs, providing better grip and more precise steering in both wet and dry conditions.

At the back end, we agreed that the deep bumper and the protection plate emphasise the vehicle’s stability and strength, with the roof spoiler further accentuating the SUV’s streamlined styling. We also recognised how the distinctive rear LED lamp clusters add further character to the car.

Spacious Interior

Once inside, what struck us first was the ample space available throughout the vehicle. With three rows of seating, this comfortable sports SUV provides sufficient room for up to seven adults. The presence of an electric sunroof ensures plenty of natural light throughout the cabin, further adding to this 4x4’s spacious nature.

We appreciated the power-adjustable, dual-layered front seating with shoulder and side support and deeper centres that maximise back support. Offering ample head and leg room, the front-row seats certainly have a nice wrap-around feel. The second and third rows are built with the same quality materials and are also comfy but did prove slightly tighter than those in the cockpit.

Additionally, the storage area is greatly increased with the rear seating folded flat. To add to the car’s day-to-day convenience, this model is fitted with automatic tailgate opening – meaning with hands full and keys in pocket, a little kicking motion under the rear of the vehicle is all it takes to trigger the sensor.

We took note of the freshly designed floor-level console, positioned between the front seats, with its smooth edges and improved storage space. We also appreciated the little smartphone shelf in the main console, complete with a rubber mat to prevent the device from sliding around.

Easy-to-Use Tech & Infotainment

One of the most useful aspects of this new Mitsubishi is the included modern tech. For starters, we found the customisable eight-inch colour LCD meter on the dashboard directly in front of the driver, to be very user-friendly with easy-to-read graphics. We effortlessly manoeuvred through the settings, adjusting the display to suit our preferences.

Secondly, the previously mentioned centre console houses a Smartphone-Link Display Audio (SDA). This in-car infotainment hub has a large display screen, an upgraded TomTom navigation system and a swift processing speed. We discovered the SDA can support Apple CarPlay through an iPhone, providing smart access to Apple music, Apple maps, messages and more through Siri. We could also link Android Auto to the vehicle via a smartphone, allowing us to operate many well-known apps via voice commands.

We also discovered plenty of additional features available through the Mitsubishi Remote App, which is free to download.

Other must-mention features include the sturdy steering wheel with its gratifying grip, housing all the necessary button functions, as well as the two power outlets in the Montero Sport: one in the centre console and one in the cargo area for rear passengers to charge devices or play music.

Reliable Power & Performance

As always, our favourite moment of the day was getting the vehicle out and about on the roads, thanks to the team at Zayani Motors. Our ride was powered by a 3.0-litre MIVEC petrol engine, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although not the quickest off the mark, once the SUV picked up speed on the highway, it managed to showcase its power far more effectively. We enjoyed the new Montero sports mode that delivers

more verve and agility, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-100km/h in under 10 seconds and to achieve a top speed of around 182km/h.

A brief but enjoyable spell in the sand proved this 4x4 to be as capable off-road as it is on the tarmac.

Mitsubishi have also equipped the Montero with Forward Collision Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control and an Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS), amongst other vital safety features.

Our Verdict

This attractive new offering from Mitsubishi has proven itself capable, comfortable and safe to drive. ✤

In Conversation with Zaher Mohammed Al-Ajjawi

The CEO of National Hotel Company (NHC), owners of The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, talks abouts his achievements, future projects and what impresses him most about hotels.

You’ve been the CEO of NHC for more than five years now. What achievements are you most proud of during your tenure?

One of the more important achievements that I am particularly proud of is growing NHC’s financial strength and stability, while executing the corporate strategy developed and approved by the board. The company is now more visible within the Kingdom and is truly a key player in the hospitality and tourism sector. Strengthening NHC’s relationship and further aligning strategic interests with our stakeholders, relevant local authorities and key players within the Kingdom has been a catalyst to NHC’s achievements. In my opinion, COVID has left an everlasting impact on the rules of engagement across the whole world and NHC wasn’t immune to this. Accommodating and dealing with the sudden changes

imposed upon us and yet surviving the financial strain and obstacles that this pandemic imposed, is another achievement that I am particularly proud of.

I would add that celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel was a remarkable achievement.

As the owning company of The Diplomat Radisson Blu, how does the NHC contribute towards its growth and the Kingdom's hospitality industry?

Let’s not forget that the success of the Diplomat Radisson Blu reflects that of its owning company. And the journey to this stems from the selection of a renowned and professional operator, coupled with the ongoing strategic monitoring, investing and

realignment of interests and objectives along the way. NHC allocates generous resources to upgrade and enhance the hotel's infrastructure, facilities and amenities. These investments help maintain the hotel's modernity, enabling it to meet the evolving needs and expectations of its guests and visitors. By consistently upgrading and investing in the property, NHC ensures that the hotel remains competitive and attracts a diverse range of visitors. The Diplomat Radisson Blu supports various tourism-related industries, such as transportation and entertainment, creating a multiplier effect that benefits the overall economy. NHC's role in driving the hotel's success translates into economic growth, job creation and increased business opportunities within the hospitality sector, further strengthening Bahrain's position as a thriving tourism destination.

Are there any upcoming projects or expansions planned for the hotel?

Yes, we are excited to announce that The Diplomat Radisson Blu has several upcoming projects and expansions in the pipeline. Currently, we are undergoing a comprehensive renovation of our serviced apartments. This aims to provide our guests with fresh, modern and completely renovated one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses. We are committed to creating a comfortable and luxurious living experience for our residents and these renovated units will reflect our dedication to excellence. We are also thrilled to unveil our new outlet, SOL Lounge. This pool lounge will offer a unique Mediterranean-inspired style

and ambience, providing guests with a refreshing and relaxing atmosphere to unwind and enjoy. We believe that this new addition will enhance the overall guest experience and further elevate our hotel's offerings. We have several other projects in the pipeline that will be revealed in due course.

What is your favourite travel destination and why?

Since Bahrain is an island, I am obviously more comfortable with sea destinations. In my opinion, travelling is all about admiring the destination’s beauty and charm, learning and experiencing the culture and history and interacting with the people.

One of my favourites would have to be Scandinavia. The rich scenery, culture and vast areas offer a lot to see and experience. It is like living in an adventure or a dream. De-stressing and relaxing comes naturally over there and the people are very nice and pleasant to deal with.

What’s the one thing that impresses you most when you check into a hotel?

It would have to be the hotel’s elegance! The first thing that strikes my attention and leaves a lasting impression upon check-in is the hotel’s ambience and general appearance; its façade, lobby and ultimately the rooms.

It doesn’t need to be a particular design theme but it needs to be tasteful and give me a feeling of comfort, welcome and happiness. ✤

Cluster Director of Sales and Marketing, Swiss-Belhotel Seef and Swiss-Belsuites Admiral

How many properties do you manage and how do you ensure collaboration between all the sales and marketing teams?

Managing two distinct properties, SwissBelhotel Seef and Swiss-Belsuites Admiral Juffair, requires a strategic approach due to their different niches and separate sales and marketing teams. I collaborate with each team through strategic planning sessions to define and reinforce their unique selling points, while also respecting the features of each property and maintaining confidentiality between them.

Clear and open lines of communication serve as the backbone of our success, ensuring that ideas are exchanged seamlessly, challenges are addressed proactively and everyone is on the

same page. By fostering a collaborative environment, we empower our teams to work cohesively towards shared objectives.

What unique challenges do you face with Bahrain's growing hospitality scene? It presents both opportunities and challenges. One unique challenge is managing the increasing number of hotels in the pipeline. The saturation in the market, with numerous accommodation options, necessitates strategic efforts to differentiate and attract diverse customer segments.

To address this, the focus should be on diversifying the customer base. One way to achieve this is by hosting more international and global exhibitions. These events can draw in business travellers, contributing to

the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) segment. By actively promoting Bahrain as a venue for conferences and events, the aim is to not only attract a varied clientele but also to position the destination as a dynamic and appealing choice for both business and leisure.

How long have you been in Bahrain and what's your favourite thing about living and working here?

I've been residing in Bahrain for eight years and what I love most about this place is its people. Bahrainis are incredibly friendly and approachable; they stand out as some of the most pleasant individuals I've encountered.

As an expat, living and working here definitely creates a sense of belonging.

With more than 15 years of experience under his belt, Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa's Executive Pastry Chef, Anis Mouldi, talks about his passion for all things sweet.

fact magazine 72
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

What led you to become a pastry chef and what is your specialisation?

My journey to becoming a pastry chef was greatly influenced by my family's rich culinary background. Hailing from Tunisia, I was fortunate to be born into a family with deep-rooted ties to the world of baking. My grandfather, celebrated as one of the finest bakers in our country, instilled in me a love for the craft from an early age. Additionally, having an uncle who excelled as a pastry chef further fuelled my passion for all things pastry related.

Growing up surrounded by the sights, smells and flavours of baking, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the artistry involved in transforming basic ingredients into exquisite delicacies. The sheer magic of this process, coupled with the joy it brought to those who indulged in the final creations, left an indelible impression on me.

It was this fascination with the alchemy of baking that ultimately led me to pursue a career as a pastry chef. I am deeply committed to honing my skills and expanding my knowledge in this specialised field, with a focus on creating unique and unforgettable desserts that bring delight to others.

Sofitel Bahrain hosted the Haute Croissanterie event recently. What's the inspiration behind this curated croissant menu and what's on offer?

The inspiration behind the curated menu is to enhance the guest

experience by offering a unique opportunity to elevate their culinary journey. This concept aims to position Sofitel as a preferred destination for experiencing luxuriously decadent croissants infused with local culture. Picture this: a lineup of carefully crafted croissant creations that blend Sofitel's classy vibes with a taste of Bahrain's culinary scene. It's all about adding a little flair to your pastry fix, while soaking in the best of both worlds.

What emerging trends in pastry and baking excite you most?

What really gets me excited is the art of transforming just a handful of ingredients into something truly spectacular and delicious. I'm particularly drawn to the world of sorbet and gelato. The way these frozen delights can be crafted with precision and creativity to deliver not only incredible taste but also stunning visual appeal, is simply mesmerising.

What is your signature croissant within the Haute Croissanterie selection and what makes it special?

Our signature croissant at the hotel is a delicious blend of French expertise and Bahraini flavours. Using local ingredients such as Bahraini Halwa and cardamom custard cream, each bite is a journey of taste and tradition. The halwa brings a rich sweetness, while the cardamom custard adds a subtle spice. It's a unique culinary creation that celebrates the best of both worlds, making every bite unforgettable. ✤

For a taste of authentic Kushiyaki, Apple Sharma headed to Le Jardin, the newest culinary gem at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain.

The recently opened Le Jardin introduces the Japanese art of Kushiyaki, which refers to meat and vegetables that are skewered and grilled. If you’re craving some Japanese street food in a refined setting, then this is the place to be.

Tucked away on the pristine white sands adjacent to The Ritz-Carlton Villas, this quaint little restaurant offers an exquisite dining experience that will tantalise your taste buds in a serene surrounding.

As we stepped into this charming open-air eatery, we were greeted by the gentle rustle of palm trees, chirping of birds and the soothing sound of waves. Arriving at sunset allowed us to experience the ambience, both during the day and into the evening. With only five tables, Le Jardin offers an intimate al fresco setup right on the beach, complete with tiki torches, ideal for sundowners and quick bites. Surrounded by a herb garden, illuminated palm trees and moonlight shimmering on the water, the restaurant’s picturesque and tranquil setting was a welcome retreat and the perfect way to end the weekend.

Warmly greeted by Restaurant Manager Jomjit Cheepchol and Supervisor Jenallen, we were handed a refreshing welcome drink of herbal-infused tea, a signature concoction that changes daily, followed by a round of colourful mocktails expertly crafted by bartender Shampu. The refreshing Tokyo Twist with its subtle ginger and pineapple notes and the vibrant Wasabi Berry with a hint of spiciness, transported us to a beachside paradise with every sip. Le Jardin has a strong focus on sustainability and locally sourced produce. From the avocado straws to the use of fresh, seasonal ingredients, we were thoroughly impressed and off to a great start. features mainly Kushiyaki from the small kitchen on site. We began with an assortment of starters. First to arrive were two condiments – soy and universal sauce (a mixture of ponzu and soy with sesame seeds) – followed by Hammour Chips. Delicately fried to perfection and served with spicy wasabi mayo, these delightful bites of fish with their crispy exterior and tender interior, were a crowd pleaser. Equally impressive and one of our favourites was the Corn Tempura. These crunchy, golden balls were mouth-wateringly scrumptious, so much so that the chef prepared extra for us at the end of the meal. The sweetness of the corn harmonised beautifully with the zing of the wasabi mayo, making them the perfectly moreish snack that you can’t get enough of.

Next up, the Wagyu Beef Salad proved to be another palate pleaser, featuring tender Wagyu slices dressed in a tangy, sweet in-house ponzu sauce and garnished with delicate micro herbs. This was followed by Tuna Tataki, which was beautifully plated and garnished with edible flowers. The tender pieces of seared tuna were dressed in ponzu sauce and served with ginger, wasabi and lime. The vegetarian option of Radish and Cabbage Salad was also a big hit, featuring crunchy julienned red cabbage and radish, smothered in a creamy sesame sauce – in a word, delicious. Moving on to the main stars of the show, we were treated to a Kushiyaki extravaganza from the BBQ Skewers menu. Grilled to perfection over an open flame, these bite sized pieces of meat offered a tantalising array of flavours and textures. Each dish is meticulously prepared – first barbecued on steel skewers, then seasoned with salt and pepper and finally brushed with a mouthwatering tare sauce made of mirin, soy and sugar.

The grilled shrimps stood out in their simple presentation. The fresh catch did all the talking – plump and succulent, with a slight golden caramelisation. The grilled octopus was cooked to perfection – sous vide for an hour and a half and charred for a delightfully smoky taste.

For poultry lovers, there’s plenty on offer at Le Jardin. We tried the grilled chicken breast with spring onions, which had a beautiful barbecued flavour, but the chicken thigh was something else – these tender, flavourful bites were heavenly and are a musttry. The vegetarians amongst us indulged in grilled leeks and shiitake mushrooms, which had a lovely velvety texture and a rich earthy flavour.

The beef bacon and spring onion skewer presented crunchy, sweet onions wrapped in crispy, salty bacon, while the Wagyu beef tenderloin was a melt-in-your-mouth experience with its buttery texture and rich flavour. Finally, the salmon belly perfectly blended soft, flaky fish with zesty acidity to create a unique flavour profile.

All the meat is served off the skewers, dressed in the glossy tare sauce and comes with a refreshing wedge of lime – simple yet satiating flavours that linger on your palate.

As our skewered journey drew to a close, we indulged in the ultimate finale – mochi dessert. We were treated to four delectable flavours, including sesame, green tea, strawberry and chestnut, providing a sweet and satisfying end to our evening. Le Jardin isn’t just about its delicious food; its versatility makes it an ideal venue for intimate gatherings and small events, with the option to extend onto the beach.

With every dish presented with care and finesse and every bite enhancing the natural essence of the ingredients, Le Jardin promises a serene dining experience that will beckon you time and time again.

The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday on regular days and Wednesday to Sunday during Ramadan. ✤

A TASTE OF ITALY IN BAHRAIN

DINING DELIGHT •
Embarking on a culinary journey, Apple Sharma indulged in authentic Italian cuisine at the Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa’s La Pergola restaurant.

La Pergola, one of Bahrain’s oldest Italian eateries, is renowned for its elegant setting and traditional flavours. It’s been a while since my last visit, so I was excited to reacquaint myself with this all-time favourite.

Upon arrival for lunch, we were warmly greeted by the recently joined Restaurant Manager, Giuseppe Casciaro, and Head Chef Wakil Jetu. As my dining companion and I took our seats at a table by the window, we couldn’t help but notice the inviting ambience. With pleasant Italian music filling the air, the modern Mediterranean-style setting had a perfect balance of daylight and mood lighting, creating a cosy yet lively atmosphere. Edison bulbs hung from the ceiling and accents of bubble patterns were displayed throughout the décor, from the table lamps to the surrounding backlit wooden panels.

We made ourselves comfortable as the chef walked us through the menu, explaining the dishes we were about to taste – all from the Chef’s Specials. Our gastronomic adventure began with warm bread served with olive tapenade and whipped butter –a simple yet comforting introduction to the meal, whetting our appetites for the delights to follow.

First up were the salads. The Burrata Pugliese, one of my favourites, featuring soft, silky, melt-in-the-mouth burrata cheese paired with tomato coulis, semi-sundried cherry tomatoes (slow cooked at 60°C for three hours) and basil oil, was a delicious start to the meal. Next was Insalata di Cavolo, a new signature kale salad with pickled beetroot, roasted almonds, dried cranberries and parmesan cheese, tossed in a lemon balsamic dressing, garnished beautifully with a crisp tuile and micro herbs. The crunchiness of the finely chopped leaves and nuttiness of the almonds added a lovely texture, while the sweetness of the cranberries cut through the acidity for a harmonious blend of flavours. I’m not usually a big fan of kale but this little bowl of vibrant green goodness has most certainly transformed me into, dare I say, a kale lover.

With our palates off to a great start, we moved on to the Primo Piatto, or first course, as we were presented with more tantalising options. First to arrive was Lasagna di Carne, a newly introduced signature dish, featuring thin and crispy layers of homemade pasta, with creamy béchamel and rich beef ragu, topped with mozzarella cheese and dollops of pesto and basil garnish. Slightly different from a regular lasagna, this dish featured round sheets of fresh pasta, cooked à la minute. Comforting yet indulgent, it disappeared from the plate as quickly as it arrived! Meanwhile, the Rigatoni al Limone e Salvia offered a simple classic, with generous sized rigatoni tubes smothered in a creamy lemon sauce, comprising garlic, cream, lemon zest and juice, finished with parsley and garnish of sage. It offered a delightful tanginess to the entire dish.

Embracing classic Italian tradition, the portions at La Pergola are ideal for sharing, which my dining companion and I were happy to follow as we proceeded to the Secondo Piatto or main course. A vibrant plate of chef’s signature Pesce al Forno arrived at the table, presenting a locally caught black sea bass served with a medley of colourful courgettes and cherry tomatoes. Grilled for a little caramelisation and then topped with veggies and baked in the

fact magazine 80

oven, the fish was cooked to perfection – soft, flaky and golden. With a hint of chili, it paired beautifully with the crunchy veggies and aromatic fennel, creating a marriage made in heaven. No Italian meal would be complete without the classic dessert, Tiramisu. And at La Pergola, it is famous for its live preparation.

Watching the skilled chef construct it tableside added an interactive element to the dining experience. And the taste? A true coffee lovers’ delight – simply divine! The rich flavours of espresso-soaked savoiardi, layered with creamy mascarpone cheese, a hint of vanilla and topped with generous sprinklings of cocoa danced on the palate, leaving a lingering sweetness that was the perfect finale to the feast.

As we sipped our hot Americano coffee to round off the meal, we couldn't help but reflect on the culinary journey we had experienced at La Pergola. Using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients, Chef Wakil’s fine dining experience shines through in all his creations and we can see why Giuseppe sings his praises, commenting that, as an Italian himself, he couldn’t prepare more authentic dishes than the chef.

So, if you’re looking for a true taste of Italy in the heart of Bahrain or simply seeking an elevated dining experience, a visit to La Pergola is a must. ✤

• NEW IN TOWN
NEW IN TOWN •

Located in the heart of Adliya, Block 338 is the famous dining district home to a variety of restaurants that appeal to a broad range of tastes. Ever evolving, there're always exciting eateries opening here. Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at one such place.

Stepping into the spotlight and raring to make its mark on the block is the new upmarket restaurant – Big Texas Steakhouse (BT Steakhouse).

On arrival, a favourable impression was made right off the bat owing to the fact that the outlet has its own private parking just beside the property.

Once inside, we were immediately grabbed by its elegant and classy décor. The mirrored walls, beautiful chandeliers and long draping curtains dressed the space with an effortlessly stylish and modern ambience. The room further extended to a moderatesized outdoor dining area. Then there’s an impressive first floor section that boasts a large bar with ample seating. Finally, BT Steakhouse also has a rooftop area that's currently under works and is set to open post Ramadan.

As we took our seats, the warm staff attended to us and made suggestions from the exciting menu. We were first offered a breadbasket accompanied with delicious butter, followed by a colourful looking plate of Caprese. Generous servings of marinated bocconcini were carefully surrounded with slices of ripe, red heirloom tomatoes, a handful of rocca leaves and topped with sweetly herbaceous basil gel and tomato cream. Combined in a bite, it amounted to an artful balance of flavours. Next came the lavish Lobster Bisque. Presented gracefully and

constructed at the table, the waiter poured the soup into a bowl full of succulent lobster pieces. The wonderful theatrics were swiftly followed by us immediately relishing this smooth, buttery and deeply flavourful sauce that was elevated with the generous portions of lobster meat that delivered on both texture and taste.

The final appetiser was the highly recommended Char-grilled Spanish Octopus. It took me one bite and I explicitly understood why this is certain to become a crowd pleaser. The octopus is painstakingly and carefully sous vide at a set temperature for several hours (the chef has this expertly figured out to the tee). It's then rubbed in garlic butter and grilled on an open fire to achieve that optimum char that completely enhances the taste profile. It's paired with celeriac purée that brings a subtly sweet and nutty flavour. But wait, it gets even better. Accompanying this was one of the best potato preparations I've ever had the chance to taste – layered potatoes. Beautifully fluffy on the inside and impossibly crisp on the outside, you'd genuinely have to taste this to believe it. Diverse and stimulating, the flavours here combined harmoniously into the perfect morsel.

We then received a round of refreshingly vibrant mocktails that were meticulously concocted using flavours such as passion fruit, kiwi, raspberry and peaches. The restaurant also offers a large selection of grape and special beverages for the discerning customer.

Back perusing the menu, we were gearing up for the reason we made this trip – to sample the steaks. While doing that, we were visited by BT Steakhouse's Executive Chef and General Manager, Paul Gindra. Very friendly, he welcomed us to the restaurant, enquired about our experience so far and helped us decide on our steaks for the night, ensuring we made the best choice. It didn’t take long, and we were soon served our delectable cuts. We opted for the 500g T-bone and the 450g Short Loin with

bone-in. BT Steakhouse uses only USDA Prime Beef, ensuring high-quality with plenty of marbling, and then masterfully grills them on an oak wood open fire. The results speak for themselves, as both the steaks had a deeply browned crust, with a crackling crispness and a satisfyingly intense roasted flavour. This was achieved by basting the meat with a mixture of rendered dryaged fat, along with clarified butter. Cooked to medium-rare perfection and seasoned sublimely with just salt and pepper, the steak was rich, buttery and exquisitely tender on every bite. For the T-bone, we added a little surf on the top with a delicious whole lobster tail, because why not? While for the Short Loin, we picked a special compound butter that's prepared using smoked brisket, cut-up and then mixed with fresh truffles from Italy. Slathered on the steak right after it comes off the grill, it melts and imbues the meat with a deeply savoury and umami flavour. We also picked a few sides, including the smoked mushroom and layered potatoes, once again, but this time prepared using duck fat and a highly enticing Black & Blue sauce – made combining blue cheese and a variety of peppercorns. All of which were absolutely great.

With minimal space left for dessert, the Honey and Saffron Panna Cotta was the ideal light option. The soft, milky pudding was served atop a praline of roasted hazelnut and with a perfectly zesty citrus sorbet.

BT Steakhouse is a truly exceptional destination for steak lovers. Offering a great setting, wonderful service and outstanding food, you might soon find it becoming your favourite new meat spot. ✤

DISCOVER SAUDI ARABIA

From breathtaking, expansive desert landscapes, to fascinating historical sites, impressive forts, thriving cities and more, Saudi Arabia has a lot to offer.

• TRAVEL AlUla Hegra

Situated in Western Asia and encompassing a major portion of the Arab Peninsula is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Shaped by its distinguished position as a historic trade hub and the birthplace of Islam, the country is steeped in rich culture, heritage and tradition.

In recent years, following the announcement of the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 and having undergone significant growth and transformation, the Kingdom has opened its doors to the world since 2019.

So, pack up and get ready for a unique experience. We’ve rounded up a few places that might interest you.

AlUla

An extraordinary desert landscape like no other, AlUla is an open-air archaeological, cultural and touristic area that has come to be recognised among the most notable places to visit in Saudi Arabia. Situated towards the northwestern side of the Kingdom, AlUla is a paradise for explorers, history buffs and archaeology enthusiasts.

Home to Hegra, the first Saudi Arabian site to enter the UNESCO World Heritage List, AlUla is an ancient land where cultures met and many civilisations were built. Once a thriving international trade hub, the archaeological site of Hegra (also known as Mada’in Saleh) looks similar to its more famous sister site of Petra, a few hundred miles to the north in Jordan. It was the second city of the Nabataean kingdom – one of the most enigmatic and intriguing civilisations. Among its historical landmarks, you will discover hidden stories, as its rocks are full of obscure symbols, exquisite inscriptions and texts dating back to the first century BC. Then, there are more than 100 aweinspiring, carefully carved tombs, of which the Tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza is the tallest and most famous. AlUla also has a wealth of natural wonders that are a mustvisit, including the dramatic rock formations, such as Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock), the Rainbow Rock, the Raqasat (Dancing Rocks) and the famous Face Rock. Venture to Gharameel for a rare view of the Milky Way, free from light pollution. You can camp in a traditional Bedouin setup, with an expert guide on hand to tell you about the stars and constellations. Then, on the other hand, you can also experience luxury living and fine dining like no other with properties such as Our Habitas AlUla, Banyan Tree AlUla and others, that offer Arabian opulence at its finest.

But it doesn’t stop there, AlUla regularly hosts exciting events like the ongoing Desert X AlUla 2024, the upcoming AlUla Skies Festival 2024 and sensational concerts by some of the best musical artists from around the globe at the Maraya Concert Hall.

Al-Ahsa

Al-Ahsa, in the Eastern Province, is home to the largest palm oasis in the world. Spread across an area of more than 85.4sq/km, this picturesque desert escape boasts more than 2.5 million palm trees, including date palms, which receive

water from a huge underground aquifer. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's an ideal choice for visitors looking to delight in the oasis’ lush greenery and indulge in its famous Khalas dates, considered among the best in the world.

Next, explore the wonderful Souq Al Qaisariya and grab a souvenir from the wares that reflect the region’s rich trading legacy. Then, continue roaming Al-Ahsa’s major urban city, Al-Hofuf, and visit the famous King Abdullah Environmental Park that has playgrounds, a football field, mazes and a theatre – sure to keep the entire family entertained. The Al-Ahsa Archaeological and Heritage Museum houses more than 1,400 antiquities, coins, photographs, manuscripts and other archaeological treasures from the oasis’ long and storied history.

Then, take a quick 30-minute drive to the majestic Al Qarah mountains that are perfect for hiking or camping trips. Step into the stunning limestone caves that were formed by subaerial weathering processes. Nestled within these caves on the western elevation is the Dougha Handmade Pottery Factory. One of the oldest of its kind, local potters have been plying their trade for generations. Here you can also try your hand at creating something of your own at the wheel or pick up a souvenir to take home. Finally, located on the city’s outskirts, is the Al-Asfar Lake (also known as Yellow Lake). An

outstanding landmark and an ideal picnic spot, the contrast between the blue lake and golden dunes is breathtaking.

Jeddah

Offering a perfect blend of tradition and modernity is the ‘Bride of the Red Sea’ – Jeddah. This beautiful port city is a commercial centre and the second largest city in Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, Jeddah is derived from Jaddah, the Arabic word for grandmother. Legend has it, it’s the burial place of the first woman – Eve. Her remains are at the Cemetery of Eve in central Jeddah.

Then, take a step into the incredible Al Balad district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that was established in the seventh century and served as a gateway for Muslims making the annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah, as well as a significant trading destination. From the remarkable mosques to the gorgeous houses built with coral stone and decorated with intricate latticed windows, Al Balad is a living homage to Jeddah’s history.

For the art aficionados, the Athr Gallery is a leading contemporary art spot that regularly hosts engaging exhibitions and events. Get the kids ready for a fun-filled, exciting day at the Al Shallal Theme Park, which offers some of the most thrilling rides. Also, the Fakieh Aquarium boasts sprawling tunnels and vast tanks that house more than 200 species of fish, with around 85% being native to Jeddah’s undisturbed coral reefs. Moreover, the beautiful Jeddah Waterfront and Jeddah Corniche are great spots for a sunset stroll. Relax and enjoy the wondrous views of the Red Sea or take the time to explore and dive into the excellent local cuisine.

Riyadh

Visit the ever-evolving and flourishing capital of Saudi Arabia – Riyadh. Once a humble desert village to now being the largest city in the Kingdom, Riyadh has come a long way. First, how about getting the best view of the city? You can do that by visiting the Sky Bridge at the top of the Kingdom Centre that's located 300m above the city. Learn about the storied history at places like the National Museum, Diriyah Museum and Al Masmak Palace Museum. Visit one of Riyadh's oldest traditional markets that carries 100 years of history – Souk Al-Zal, found in the Al-Dirah neighbourhood. Or indulge in the growing finedining scene in Riyadh that’s seeing globally renowned restaurants opening across the city. Take a drive some 100km away from Riyadh and visit The Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn), an unexpected and dramatic geological wonder in the rocky desert, northwest of the city. While the aforementioned places could serve as a delightful start to exploring Saudi Arabia, there are numerous other destinations that also deserve your attention. These include Damman, which boasts some of the most scenic beaches, and the abundantly beautiful hill stations of Taif and Abha. Yes, you heard us right! The Kingdom is full of surprises just waiting to be discovered. ✤

ARTISTIC IMPRESSIONS

The latest collection from QASIMI, the London-based label with Middle Eastern heritage, draws inspiration from the work of Sudanese artist Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq.
• FASHION FOCUS

Having worked with Kamala on many occasions, this time the brand chose to use her prints in conversation with their own silhouettes and it’s hoped the SS24 collection will bring awareness to the current situation in Sudan and show QASIMI’s support for those affected.

1984’s Women in Crystal Cubes acts as the starting point for the collection, the centre of everything, alongside later works like My Plant, Blues for the Martyrs and Composition. “My life is full of folktales and legends – art comes from thoughts and memories,” says Kamala.

The artist’s potent words are mirrored by QASIMI’s earthly colour palette, rooted in the hues of the sun, sand and sky. Light blues, bright whites, bark browns and zingy yellows are grounded by shades of concrete grey, white lead and black.

Offering an artisanal blend of modernity and classicism, SS24 exercises two concepts: the first being beading and transparency, with the second centring around portraits and embroidery. New techniques like silk printing and embroidery are embraced this season, while the art of flou permeates both menswear and womenswear, juxtaposing cotton tailoring, technical wools and lightweight cotton with floaty layers of printed silk and organic poplin.

Building on the foundation blocks of QASIMI’s ‘Permanent’ collection, this offering fuses raw-edged sweatshirts and denim blazers with organza coats and printed silks. Cubic embellishment acts as another avenue for play, as clear embroidery comes in the form of strung-together cubic beads

adorning tops and skirts. The rich oils of 2016’s Composition become portrait prints across fleece and jersey, with Kamala's cubes transformed into physical manifestations of transparency and sculpture.

BIG SCREEN

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Need to Know:

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is an American comedy-drama television series inspired by the 1996 series and 2005 film of the same name. We see the couple dealing with a world full of dangers, as they figure out their newly formed, unpredictable partnership.

Director: Francesca Sloane, Donald Glover

Cast: Donald Glover, Maya Erskine, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Paulson

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Based around the action-packed 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie feature about married assassins who ultimately find themselves assigned to kill each other, this 2024 iteration, though borrowing inspiration for the basic plot structure from its well-known predecessor, now takes the liberty to tell a story that's very much its own thing. Moving away from the big screen and now presented in an eight-part TV series format, the show takes advantage of the opportunity to better flesh out the characters and their motives as the story progresses.

Donald Glover, also a co-creator of the show, and Maya Erskine partner to play the pseudonymous John and Jane Smith. They begin as two strangers who independently agree to become agents for a mysterious organisation, under the cover of a married couple. Together, they must work through missions using their espionage skills and manoeuvre tensions as their developing romantic relationship is put to the test.

Driven by clever writing and the great on-screen chemistry between Donald and Maya, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a tenaciously original take, while also honouring the original.

True Detective: Night Country

Need to Know:

True Detective: Night Country is the fourth season of True Detective, an American anthology crime drama television series that’s airing on HBO. The season is set in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska, and follows the investigation behind the mysterious disappearance of eight men from a research station.

Director: Issa López

Cast : Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star LaBlanc, John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston

Why Is It Worth Watching?

After almost five years away, the series’ longawaited fourth season has returned, this time taking place in the harsh Arctic region of Alaska, far away from the hot and sweaty settings of earlier seasons.

The plot kicks off in the town of Ennis, where eight men working at the Tsalal Research Station unexpectedly disappear, leaving no trace at the scene, except for a woman's severed tongue. On investigation, Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) deduces that it belongs to an Indigenous woman. Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) believes the victim to be Anne Kowtok, an Iñupiat woman who was stabbed to death and her tongue cut out after protesting the construction of a local mine; the case remains unsolved after six years.

While Chief Danvers attempts to uncover a possible connection between Anne and one of the researchers, she gets news that a woman living on the edge of town has discovered the bodies of the researchers. How? She claims the spirit of a dead relative guided her to the spot. Raising only more questions about what's truly happening here?

COSY MYSTERY, THRILLER

How To Solve Your Own Murder

When something is described as just waiting for fans of Knives Out and The Thursday Murder Club, how could we not?

In 1965, teenager Frances Adams is shocked when a fortune-teller predicts that she’ll be murdered. Obsessed, she spends the next 60 years attempting to solve the anticipated crime.

In the present day, great niece Annie Adams has been summoned to her aunt’s country estate. But, too late, Frances has indeed been murdered before she arrives.

Since Frances has spent years digging up secrets, it’s no surprise that Annie encounters numerous suspects in her search for the killer.

Phasor is the eighth studio album by the notably innovative Helado Negro (Roberto Carlos Lange). The third release since his inimitably astonishing 2019 project, This Is How You Smile, do yourself a favour and give it a spin.

Phasor was recorded in Asheville, North Carolina, shortly after Helado’s move there. Deeply inspired by the Smoky Mountains and his renewed connection to nature, he manages to capture the breathtaking sights and sounds observed on long hikes and transfer those experiences into a highly imaginative soundscape for us to wander in.

On the opener, LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros), the dreamy electronics spiritedly move alongside the galloping beat. I Just Want To Wake Up With You and Best For You And Me expresses the simplest and sweetest emotions over a cascade of breezy synths and catchy rhythms.

The tranquil atmosphere on Echo Tricks Me and Out There is only further elevated with his soothing vocals.

Embellished with tambourine shakes, 808-clicks (drum beats) and pleasing chords, Wish You Could Be Here beckons you to dance.

Helado manages to, once again, capture the complexities of human emotions and uniquely express them on Phasor

What Now is the second solo album from the former Alabama Shakes singersongwriter, Brittany Howard. She reunites with Shawn Everett, who first collaborated with her as an engineer on Alabama Shakes’ S ound & Color, to help co-produce here. What Now is an absolute treat, with Brittany unleashing her impressively complex vocal harmonies, combined with her standout instrumentation choices over 12 songs that are jazzy, upbeat and oh so funky!

“Out there, there’s a love waiting for me” sings Howard on the first track Earth Sign The follow up I Don’t, sees her smoothly step into groovy Motown territory.

While the richness of rhythm and funk on the title track What Now is mesmerising. The jazz drumming on Red Flags starts off slow, then crescendos with Brittany's vocals shimmering over everything.

To Be Still let's everyone take a breather for a moment, then slowly breaks into a tight breakbeat, with vocals following.

The next track Another Day brings the funk and franticness back in a big way. Brittany belts the catchy refrain on house music inspired Prove It To You, which is sure to leave you tapping your feet and, like most of this sensational album, have you wishing you were on a dancefloor.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Boogie In The Bathroom

What do you do if you’re a common or garden convenience store, possibly with nothing much to recommend you other than, well, being convenient? Obviously, you provide your customers with a big button on the wall with a sign that says, ‘Do Not Push This Button’ and wait to see what happens. This was the scenario in the washrooms at one such store in Kentucky, USA and, human nature being as it is, it wasn’t long before the button was, indeed,

pushed. The result? A full-on disco party experience complete with coloured spotlights, mirror balls and cheesy dance music!

A store representative explained that they were looking for a unique selling point, which has now spread to several other branches. And we reckon this sounds like a great fun marketing idea. Who doesn’t want to dance in the bathroom while attending to business? On the other hand, all those flashing lights and loud disco tunes could just scare the **** out of you!

A Win-Win Situation Mind Your Language

Aside from the car crash (pun totally intended) that is Christian Horner’s personal and professional life as we go to press, the big story in the run up to the Formula One Bahrain season opener was Sir Lewis (we love him) Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari.

The British driver has been with Mercedes AMG for 11 years, this is his 12th season, and it initially came as a shock to learn his contract was short-term, which makes the move possible. Ferrari’s shares jumped and the company saw a massive

rise in value. And, it must be said, Lewis did rather well out of the deal too. In fact, it seemed the only loser was Mercedes with fans questioning why they would let their star go so easily. However, it’s now emerged that there was, indeed, method in Toto Wolff’s madness. The team principal explained that Mercedes had made the move to guard against potentially losing out on upcoming driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Apparently, a similar situation arose in regard to the young Max Verstappen, and we all know how that turned out.

As dedicated wordsmiths, we’re always learning new things and there is often discussion in the office on current meanings. One such happened this week as we were doing a little research about the lovely Chef CZN Burak. It turns out that the social media sensation – he has almost 55 million followers on Instagram – was once known as Smiley Bae, and it’s easy to see why, he is indeed very smiley. However, being ever inquisitive, we got to talking about the meaning of Bae. Some thought it was a shortened term for baby or babe, others were convinced it had something to do with Beyonce, who is

known as Queen Bey but also sometimes as Bae. All very confusing until one of our number informed us that BAE is, in fact, an acronym for Before Anyone Else. From the sublime to the ridiculous, we then surmised it would be possible for someone to be the OG GOAT BAE – for those not in the know, that means Original Gangster (or gangsta!), Greatest Of All Time, Before Anyone Else.

Language is certainly a beautiful, ever evolving thing. That being said, we still don’t understand Salt Bae – he surely can’t be the first person who ever put salt on a piece of meat?
