Going Green

Qatar may be a small country but we’re batting well above our weight in terms of sustainability and this month’s cover story looks at all the ways we’re going green. I was particularly impressed to see the measures being taken to produce the very first carbon neutral World Cup. In my view the very idea makes this sporting extravaganza even more special. I’m also very excited about the new recycling hub and look forward to telling you more about it once it’s open.

Still on the subject of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, we’re starting to hear about the various fan zones that will be available across the country, from the official national entertainment options to hotels and venues putting on special events to mark the occasion. We’ve begun our coverage this month with information on the Qetai-Fan Beach Fest and Aravia from MDLBEAST and we’ll be adding more info as it becomes available on our website at www.factqatar. com as well as with a comprehensive feature in next month’s issue.

Elsewhere this month we got behind the wheel of the latest offering from Chinese luxury auto maker Hongqi, which was very impressive, You’ll also find plenty of food reviews, from an exceptional lounge to a Middle East first, in our dining section alongside some of the best foodie deals around. And don’t forget to catch up on news from across Qatar in the Listen Up section as well as the latest on entertainment, fashion and more. Happy reading everyone!

The future of cruising is here, with MSC World Europa, MSC Cruises’ new flagship, which will soon have its naming ceremony in Doha, Qatar.

Thenaming ceremony of MSC’s most environmentally advanced cruise ship, MSC World Europa is set to take place in Doha on November 13. The Cruise Division of MSC Group in partnership with Qatar Airways made the announcement. As part of the event, the city’s brand-new Grand Cruise Terminal will be officially inaugurated. This highlights MSC’s commitment to Qatar and the continued importance of the Middle East, where MSC Cruises is brand leader. It also supports Qatar’s Vision 2030 pledge to triple the number of international tourists visiting the country by that year.

Doha’s Grand Cruise Terminal is a state-of-the-art, 24,000sq/m facility that will handle up to 28,000 passengers a day and has the capacity to host two mega-cruise ships a day. It features an aquarium and a gallery specialising in Islamic art, among other things.

Starting December 20, MSC World Europa will offer sevennight cruises to Doha, Qatar; Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas Island, United Arab Emirates; and Dammam, Saudi Arabia. She will move to the Mediterranean Sea in March 2023, where

she will offer seven-night cruises to the Italian ports of Genoa, Naples and Messina, as well as Valletta in Malta, Barcelona in Spain and Marseille in France. In the winter this year, MSC Opera will offer seven-night itineraries in the Gulf region to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas island plus two destinations in Oman, Muscat and Khasab.

Spanning 22 decks with 40,000sq/m of public space and 2,626 cabins, MSC World Europa has been designed to offer a range of premium experiences for vacationers. It will be the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessel in MSC Cruises’ fleet and the most environmentally advanced to date. LNG is one of the world’s cleanest marine fuels available at scale and is set to play a key role in the decarbonisation of international shipping. It virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions like sulphur oxides and reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 85%. ✤

Qatar has been leading the Gulf region when it comes to sustainable solutions and protecting the environment. Last year the Gulf state created the Environment and Climate Change Ministry and last month it showcased its FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 initiatives at the UN. It’s not taking its commitment towards a greener, cleaner planet lightly. It’s national week-long campaign to raise awareness and showcase the progress Qatar has made in the areas of sustainability begins on October 8.

Qatar has launched a series of sustainability initiatives as it gets ready for the biggest event in the country’s history, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. It’s the first country in the region to host the tournament and sustainability is the core of its plan to present the beautiful game to the world. And that’s not all, it’s vowed to slash emissions by 25% as part of the National Vision 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. So how does it plan to reach these goals?

The First Carbon-Neutral World Cup

FIFA and Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy have committed to reducing and offsetting all carbon emissions related to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. It promises to be the first ever climate-neutral experience in history, meaning that during the event, carbon footprint will be offset through some of the green initiatives the government has invested in. These are some of the ways Qatar plans to host the first carbon neutral world cup:

Compact Tournament

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be the most compact in modern history. All eight stadiums are close together, with the longest distance being between Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor to Al Janoub in Al Wakrah at 75km. This will reduce carbon emissions caused by transport of teams, officials and fans during the event. Players will also be staying in the same location throughout the tournament, meaning less travel and less pollution.

No-Fly Zone

Fans, players and officials will not need to take any domestic flights once they arrive in Qatar. Due to the compact nature of the event, they won’t be far from a stadium, training site or tourist attraction. This is in stark contrast to previous tournaments, where fans and players often flew thousands of miles between matches.

Sustainable Stadiums

The matches will be held in eight sustainable stadiums all of which have been built to be water- and energy-efficient. They were built using 40% recyclable materials. Constructed from shipping containers and removable seats, the Stadium 974 is the first fully dismountable FIFA World Cup stadium in tournament history. The 40,000-capacity venue will be completely dismantled and repurposed after the event, with parts going to other sporting facilities in Qatar and abroad. Some of the stadiums will also be partially lit using renewable energy.

Doha Metro

The new Doha Metro will be responsible for transporting thousands of fans around the country. The electric metro system uses regenerative braking systems which help to reduce its carbon footprint. In addition, its stations carry various green credentials and operate under green building certification. The Metro forms the backbone of Qatar’s integrated public transport system and promoting its usage is a key ingredient of Qatar National Vision 2030. It is set to revolutionise the way people move around Doha and its suburbs during the tournament.

Sustainable design, construction and operation has been incorporated throughout the metro network achieving industry leading GSAS Five-Star and LEED Gold awards. An LEED Certification is the most widely used global standard which recognises buildings that are efficient, cost-effective and better for occupants and the environment.

THE FUTURE IS GREEN

Planting Trees

Qatar has also pledged several planting initiatives coupled with a comprehensive climate action plan, which will help the country reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Among these is the ‘Plant a Million Trees’ by the end of this year campaign and plans to plant 10 million trees by 2030. It’s hoped the initiative will tackle the issue of global warming. To keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C, global carbon emissions need to be reduced by 45% by 2030.

But it’s not just trees, in a step toward a greener future, authorities have been successful in almost doubling the number of mangroves along the country’s shores, taking 9km of green land to 14km in less than three years. Mangrove forests produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide and toxic gases, and this helps greatly in reducing global warming.

Electric Cars

Qatar is positioning itself to be a leader in the Gulf region for the adoption of electric vehicles. They play an important role in Qatar’s achievement of its National Vision 2030. As global demand and government support and subsidies increase for electric vehicles, Qatar is moving quickly to facilitate their adoption and reduce its carbon emissions. The Gulf state is diversifying its investments to transition to an eco-friendlier, more sustainable economy. Qatar’s electric vehicle strategy aims to install more than 600 charging stations to support electric buses ahead of the World Cup. While electric cars are not uncommon in Qatar right now, market share for electric cars is expected to increase as car chargers are installed throughout the country.

Eco-friendly PublicTransport

Qatar established an ambitious Electric Vehicle Strategy that was set in motion in September 2021. One of the goals outlined in the strategy was to transition 25% of Qatar’s public transit bus fleet from petrol to electric by 2022, which it has completed successfully, and reach 100% compliance by 2030. plans have also been put in motion to take a closer step towards greener initiatives, including progressively switching to electric on public buses and government school buses.

Greener Taxis

Mowasalat declared this year that all Karwa municipal taxis will be replaced with hybrid electric eco-vehicles in line with the country’s sustainability plan. The cars use a self-charging hybrid electric powertrain that combines an electric motor and a highly effective, low-emission fuel engine. In addition, a total of eight bus stations with electric charging stations will be entirely run by Mowasalat at Al Sudan, the Industrial Area, Al Wakra, the Education City, Lusail, Gharrafa and Msheireb. The West Bay Central Bus Station is set to open for business in November 2022.

Cleaner Energy

Qatar is a leading exporter of one of the cleanest fuels in the world, helping countries meet their energy needs while reducing carbon emissions from coal. Most recently QatarEnergy signed an agreement with US-based General Electric (GE) to develop a carbon capture roadmap for the Middle East nation’s energy sector. The Qatari state-owned company said it aims to “explore the feasibility of developing a world-scale carbon hub at Ras Laffan Industrial City which, as of today, is home to more than 80 GE gas turbines”.

QatarEnergy, which is spending more than USD50 billion for the expansion of its giant North Field, also aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint across its oil and gas operations. The company’s most recent sustainability strategy outlines several initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Qatar Foundation

Co-founded and chaired by Her Royal Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned more than 25 years ago, Qatar Foundation is a non-profit organisation focusing on research, community and development. It’s strategically orientated to help Qatar reach its maximum potential and one of the key areas it focuses on is sustainability. The organisation also has a non-profit research and policy centre Earthna which works on informing and influencing national and global sustainable policy by researching and testing within the confines of Education City focussing also on environmental issues and climate change. Some of its initiatives include working on ensuring sustainability is a core component of children’s education, that will teach them to love and understand their environment and appreciate their ecosystem.

Green Infrastructure

Qatar has more than 1,400 buildings under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), which highlights ‘green’ infrastructure across the country. GSAS is the first performance-based system in the Middle East and North Africa region that is developed to assess and rate buildings and infrastructure for their sustainability impact. It works on guiding projects on reducing their environmental footprint during design, construction, and operations stages. The innovative buildings are designed to cut electricity and water consumption while also reducing waste. This allows major infrastructure efforts to take place while also ensuring the environment is prioritised. An example is the recently completed Msheireb Downtown Doha regeneration project. It’s said to be the world’s first smart and sustainable regeneration project, the development has a high concentration of sustainable buildings accredited by the international green building certification system LEED, as well as 6,400 solar panels that generate four per cent of its energy.

Eco Schools

In 2018 Qatar Green Building Council became the national operator for Eco-Schools Qatar. Eco-Schools is the largest global sustainable schools programme created by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). It starts in the classroom and expands to the community by engaging the next generation in action-based learning. The Eco-Schools programme is a two-year commitment course. It encourages young people to engage in their environment by allowing them the opportunity

to actively protect it. Through the programme, young people experience a sense of achievement at being able to have a say in the environmental management policies of their schools, steering them towards certification and the prestige which comes with being awarded a Green Flag.

Eco Tourism

Last year, Qatar Tourism launched the country’s largest ever international tourism marketing campaign ‘Experience a World Beyond’ in a push to become the fastest-growing tourism destination in the Middle East. A new, dedicated website and mobile app was launched to showcase the world-leading destination as the launch of more than 100 new hotels approaches in time for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Since the launch, Qatar tourism scene has grown tremendously. However, a part of the country’s tourism drive also includes its natural environments ranging from wetlands to natural areas, flora, fauna and other habitats. Qatar has also taken advantage of the whale shark gathering, ensuring locals, residents and tourists can enjoy this natural phenomenon in a secured and controlled area, posing no harm or disruption to this habitat.

In 2014, the Qatar Tourism Authority developed the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 that designs the pathway through which the country will achieve sustainable development for the tourism sector by 2030.

Reducing The Carbon Footprint

Most recently Qatar held a national dialogue Climate Change and Sustainable Development, where the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmad bin

Ali Al Thani, emphasised the importance that Qatar places on tackling climate change saying: “Protecting the environment and supporting sustainable development has always been a top priority for Qatar.

“As one of the first countries to ratify the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1996, Qatar has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to addressing global environmental challenges.”

Use. Recycle. Repeat.

Qatar’s latest waste management centre is going to recycle 20,000 tonnes of waste and treat it to generate electricity. Authorities hope the project will take the country closer to accomplishing its strategic goals of building ‘a circular economy and helping protect the environment for future generations to come’.

In an attempt to deliver a sustainable FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, authorities are planning to operate three mobile waste transfer stations by the end of this year. The stations aim to collect waste while facilitating the transfer process with the help of greener, cutting-edge technology.

Earlier this year, Qatar Foundation announced plans to build the Gulf nation’s first-ever recycling hub to encourage sustainability within the community. The project is set to cover more than 8,000sq/m in Education City and will feature six recycling streams, including paper, plastic, aluminium cans, e-waste, batteries and organic waste.

As well as these national commitments, Qatar’s state-owned national carrier Qatar Airways has also reiterated its commitment to environmental sustainability and investment on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

While there is still plenty of work to be done in achieving Qatar’s National Vision within the next eight years, the Gulf nation continues to fly high in making sustainability and protecting the environment a top priority for the country. ✤

It is determined to change the public perception of Chinese luxury, as well as to compete with prestigious brands like Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Exterior

The designers have managed to create an old-school luxury cruiser with real presence, one that demands both the attention and respect of all those it passes by. In fact, Giles Taylor, the man who ran Rolls Royce’s design department for more than six years, had a hand in designing this outstanding vehicle.

Demanding attention at the front of the elongated hood is a large chrome grille reminiscent of what one would find on a Rolls or a Bentley. A distinctive strip of chrome and red lighting runs from the centre of the grille, extending into the bonnet. We appreciated the modern nature of this illuminated strip as an alternative to a classic brand logo.

At night, the H9 lights up. Along with the aforementioned red lighting of the logo, there is a long lighting strip that illuminates when the car is unlocked. The light flows from the centre

point underneath the grille, all the way around the LED lights, culminating in the illumination of the Matrix headlamps.

On its sides, HONGQI H9 shows its Welcome Lights in HONGQI Wings to illuminate the floor next to the doors in red. Approaching the H9, we felt like a red carpet had been rolled out in anticipation of our arrival.

The bodylines of this luxury sedan flow beautifully from the long hood, across the sleek flanks, to the fastback styling of the rear roof. Twenty-inch alloy wheels are available in three different style options and sit comfortably underneath the streamlined wheel arches. One of our favourite features of the exterior is the hidden door handles that only pop out when it’s time to open the soundless electric doors.

At the rear, full length LED taillights draw the width of the H9 and illuminate in a pleasing fashion, whilst dual chrome-tipped exhausts finish off the exterior in style.

Interior

The H9 includes an impressive Electronic Courtesy System, allowing for keyless entry and multiple remote-control functions, along with easy mobile phone operation.

Greeted by ambient lighting, it was clear that the lavish nature of the H9 continues inside the vehicle. We found the adjustable, ventilated, Nappa leather seats, complete with massage function,

fact magazine 35

to be very comfortable. The electronically adjustable, multifunction steering wheel houses conveniently placed controls and feels good in hand.

In the Comfort model, leather has been used extensively throughout the interior, along with plenty of chrome and Piano Black accents. With four interior colour options on offer, along with the 253 colours of the ambient lighting system, you can easily add your personal touch to the interior. Plenty of leg, shoulder and head room is available for all occupants, especially for the two passengers in the back. The ventilated, zero-gravity rear seating with massage function, is designed to transport two passengers in ultimate comfort. With access to a multi-function control panel located on the centre armrest, occupants can adjust settings to optimise their comfort levels.

Additionally, we love how the large panoramic sunroof lets in an abundance of natural light and adds to the already spacious feel of the interior.

With a storage capacity of 370-litres, the luggage compartment is not the largest we have seen; however, it can comfortably house a couple of carry-on bags. The fact that it is operated electronically adds greatly to its appeal.

Infotainment & Technology

The clean design of the infotainment system is minimalistic in nature, giving the setup a sophisticated feel. Included are two large touchscreens that have been beautifully integrated into the dash. One is for the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment screen. A small group of knobs and buttons located on the centre console helps the driver to navigate the car’s various infotainment functions.

The H9 comes fully equipped with an array of further fancy features. These include an impressive head-up display, smartphone remote control, wireless charging, car wi-fi hot spot, GPS and a BOSE sound system, to name but a few.

Performance & Safety

Performance wise, the H9 houses a six-cylinder, 3.0 litre turbo engine. It produces up to 283hp and 400Nm of torque. Combined with its seven-speed dual clutch transmission, this luxury sedan

can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 7.5 seconds.

We found the H9 to be a vehicle designed for cruising as opposed to being a performance orientated option. However, don’t be mistaken, the H9 with its four driving modes is responsive, handles well, offers superior braking and provides a very smooth driving experience. The emphasis is not on high speed, it is on comfort, refinement and safety.

A multitude of safety and assistance features have also been included to ensure the well-being of all H9 occupants. These include the ‘9H’ ultra-strong, cage-style design of the chassis, multiple airbags, lane departure warning, front collision warning and blind spot detection, amongst many others. ✤

STYLISH AND POWERFUL

Ferrari has unveiled the Purosangue, the first ever four-door, four-seater car in the Prancing Horse’s 75-year history.

The Purosangue, Italian for thoroughbred, has a mid-frontmounted engine with the gearbox at the rear to create a sporty transaxle layout. The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is coupled in front of the engine to provide a unique 4x4 transmission. This delivers exactly the 49:51% weight distribution that Maranello’s engineers deem optimal for a mid-front-engined sports car. Maranello’s iconic naturally-aspirated V12 engine debuts in this brand-new configuration.

New solutions include synergy between the front bumper and wheel arch trim which generates an air curtain that aerodynamically seals the front wheels, preventing turbulent transverse air flows being generated.

The all-new chassis has a carbon-fibre roof as standard to keep weight down and lower the centre of gravity and is lighter than Ferrari’s previous four-seaters despite being larger. A redesigned bodyshell boasts rear-hinged back doors and the spacious cabin has four generous, heated electric seats; the rear seats fold to increase luggage space and there’s a large boot. A vast array of comfort-focused content such as the Burmester audio system and new Alcantara upholstery comes as standard and the Purosangue accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.3 seconds and 0 to 200km/h in 10.6 seconds.

Powertrain

Eighty per cent of the maximum torque is on tap at just 2,100rpm and it peaks at 716Nm at 6,250rpm. Maximum power of 725cv is reached at 7,750rpm and throttle response is characteristic of a real sports car. Performance from the eight-speed, oil-bath clutch transmission is 35% higher.

Vehicle Dynamics

The Purosangue boasts a unique, innovative system that is a world first: Ferrari Active Suspension Technology (F.A.S.T.) using Multimatic’s True Active Spool Valve (TASV) System. This new suspension archetype offers numerous advantages, starting with electric motor actuation that acts like a shock absorber, offering more control.

It’s equipped with the new ABS ‘evo’ controller, further developed

to cope with low-grip surfaces and in all Manettino settings, thus optimising performance and repeatability in all road conditions. This new controller uses information from the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) to much more precisely estimate the car’s speed in order to determine the slip target for the four wheels under braking.

The 4RM-S system with innovations coupled with the new independent 4WS optimises yaw management in cornering when accelerating.

The Side Slip Angle Control 8.0 integrates all the car’s controls (steering, traction and vertical control) and creates a natural synergy with the ABS evo.

Exterior

The design features two separate and distinct levels: the lower, more technical underbody and the gloriously sinuous, imposing upper body.

The Purosangue's form was conceived as a sculpture that showcases and heightens its stunning aerodynamic development. Physical evidence of this lies in various details including, for instance, the pontoon effect of the aerobridge between front and flanks. The concept of lightness and compactness was also applied to the roof with its characteristics emphasised by the imposing rear wings which give the car’s silhouette its unique proportions.

Optional Equipment And Personalisation

The Purosangue offers a vast range of optional content and personalisation choices aside from a huge array of exterior and interior colours.

Seven-Year Maintenance

Ferrari’s unparalleled quality standards and increasing focus on client service underpin the extended seven-year maintenance programme offered with the Purosangue. Available in all markets worldwide and from all official dealers. ✤

TUNE IT UP

Bose has announced the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II, with Bose CustomTune sound calibration technology, personalised audio and noise cancellation.

CustomTune is triggered every time the buds are removed from their case and placed in your ears. A proprietary tone is played, and a microphone measures your ear canal’s acoustic response to tailor both audio and noise cancellation performance.

CustomTune fully optimises the sound frequency profile to the unique properties of every ear, so the sound that reaches the eardrum is just as the artist intended. Each bud is one-third smaller than its predecessor, weighs just six grams and comes in a pocketable charging case. There are four microphones in each bud to sense, measure and send unwanted noise to a proprietary electronic chip. And they embrace a twopiece system: a stability band and an umbrella-shaped silicone eartip to create a firm seal. A Bose Fit Kit supplies three sizes of eartips and three sizes of stability bands — allowing nine customisation options for each bud. The new buds are compatible with Apple and Android devices,

feature improved voice pickup, include Bluetooth 5.3 capability, have an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance, and work with a mobile device’s built-in voice assistant. Enjoy six hours of battery with three additional charges. The case can fully charge the buds in one hour, while 20 minutes provides up to two hours of playback. The case itself fully recharges in three hours. Capacitive touch controls on both the left and right earbuds provide access to common commands. Additionally, the Bose Music app provides shortcut settings, noise cancellation modes and adjustable EQ. The buds are available in Triple Black and the Soapstone colour variant will also be available later this year. ✤

TASTY TURKISH TRENDS

Muhammed Senel, Cluster Executive Chef at Şazeli Qatar, discusses popular Turkish cuisine, culture and hospitality in Doha.

fact magazine48
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

Chef Senel, you’ve been producing culinary creations for a number of years now. How did you begin your career?

My career began with my family business in 1996, because my father was a butcher. In 2003 I completed my education and I gained experience by working in high-class restaurants in Turkey. The steakhouse culture which exists in the world today became a trend in Turkey in 2010. In 2014, I joined Şazeli which opened its doors in Qatar in 2017 and I was a part of the team at the time responsible for the opening. Currently my team and I represent Turkish cuisine, culture and hospitality in the best possible way with five different Turkish brands under the Aura Group in Doha.

Şazeli Qatar has achieved tremendous success here, what makes it unique from other Turkish restaurants in Qatar?

We serve the real experience; high-quality products, a great atmosphere and we run a disciplined business. We use a specific kind of meat from a farm in the USA that we have been working with since arriving in Qatar. This is how we maintain a consistent taste with a high-quality standard. The second key element to our success is that we use authentic Turkish products such as butter, pistachio, olive oil and white cheese, which captures

true authentic Turkish flavours. And we aim to provide true Turkish hospitality along with a great atmosphere to our guests. We carefully work on the quality of service and food and the discipline of the work environment continuously.

The menu at Şazeli Qatar is extensive, what is your favourite dish and what is your signature creation? That is a really tough question! However, I can say my signature dishes right now are the New York Steak and the Tomahawk Steak. Because these are dishes that will allow you to feel like what you have is unique. The meat we serve is exceptional, just like the other dishes in our restaurant.

When you’re not busy leading your team, how do you like to enjoy your time off in Doha?

My family is thankfully here in Doha, so I mostly spend my time with them when I have the chance. However, our operation is extremely busy. I am happy and motivated when I see our guests having a good time while enjoying our delicious meals. Therefore, I tend to spend more time in our restaurants. Our guests are important to us and I always appreciate their requests and feedback. ✤

EXQUISITE LEBANESEITALIAN FUSION

FACT’s Homara Choudhary experiences a Middle Eastern and Mediterranean medley at Mezzo restaurant

If you have a passion for fashion and fabulous food, then look no further then Mezzo. This hidden gem can be found located on the ground floor of the luxury fivestar AlRayyan Hotel Doha, with direct access to the Mall of Qatar. AlRayyan Hotel Doha was the very first Curio Collection Hotel by Hilton in the Middle East and has been described as the ‘epicentre of world-class hospitality’ in Qatar.

Mezzo is part of the extensive culinary offering at AlRayyan Hotel and opened in 2016. It offers a blend of the finest Lebanese and Italian cuisine, prepared lovingly from a lively open kitchen led by their new Executive Chef, Ali Gharib.

With beautiful gold and black accented décor and cream marble flooring, Mezzo prides itself in offering ‘authentic Arabian hospitality’.

Chef Ali has been put in charge of redesigning the menu and he’s very excited to showcase some of his favourite dishes with us, explaining that his inspiration came mainly from his hometown in Lebanon and they were created using the finest local ingredients.

We began our meal with one of the new items on the menu; the Carpaccio di Polpo. A generous serving of thinly sliced octopus which had been braised for two hours. It was lightly dressed with parsley oil and lemon vinaigrette and dusted with pink peppercorns, imported from Lebanon. It was truly a piece of art! The texture was soft and light, the taste flavoursome with peppery and citrus notes. I could see why this exquisite dish was popular along the Italian coast.

Chef Ali’s signature dish followed shortly afterwards; the Lamb Freekeh.

fact magazine 51 CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

A traditional staple cooked by families in the mountainous areas of Lebanon. Freekeh is an ancient grain made from roasting young, green grains of durum wheat, and has been popular in Middle-Eastern and North African cuisines for centuries. Christian Daou, the Executive Sous Chef, explained that it was harvested before the strong winds came in and roasted over an open fire. The lamb shank had been braised and roasted in olive oil and then slow cooked for two hours. It was beautifully decorated with Cornabria blossoms and looked too good to eat! The meat was tender and succulent, it was so soft it simply fell off the fork. A hearty and mouthwatering must-try dish for meat fans. We travelled to Italy next where Chef Ali prepared a firm family favourite pizza! The home-made crispy dough was created with Caputo flour that had been imported from Italy as had the San Marzarno plum tomatoes. The dough, which had been fermented for two hours, was deliciously thin and crispy. I felt like I was back in Milan! The tomato base had been lightly scattered with a sprinkle of Fior Di Latte, a semi-soft, fresh cheese, made in the style of mozzarella, and garlic mushrooms. Garnished with fresh basil leaves and virgin olive oil, I was literally in pizza heaven, it was hands down one of the best I’ve eaten in Doha!

We weren’t allowed to leave without trying a classic Lebanese dessert. The Layali Lubnan is a traditional sweet dish and one of the oldest after-dinner treats enjoyed in Lebanon. The base is made with fresh milk, semolina and rose water. It was topped with whipped cream and Asht, a Lebanese clotted cream cheese, which was luxuriously rich and decadent. It’s wellknown and loved across the Middle East and it’s easy to see why. It was a plate of perfection. Garnished with pistachios and dry baby roses, the Layali Lubnan was light and creamy without being too sweet. The base was firm yet soft. It was the perfect end to a perfect meal.

Each item on the menu at Mezzo has been carefully chosen by Chef Ali. His creativity, flair and passion for food was evident in the quality and flavours produced by him and his team in the kitchen.

I am already planning my next visit!

It’s worth noting that Mezzo has launched a new family brunch menu and also offers a private dining room for special occasions. ✤

INNOVATIVE

JAPANESE DINING

FACT’s Homara Choudhary experienced Sumosan’s first stand-alone flagship in the Middle East.

Known for its consistency in serving ‘exceptional standards’ of contemporary Japanese cuisine, I was truly excited to finally try the critically acclaimed, award-winning Sumosan in downtown Msheireb. With locations in some of world’s most sophisticated cities, not to mention a popular A-list celebrity hangout, Sumosan is renown globally for serving elegant modern Japanese cuisine.

The Sumosan dining experience begins as soon as you walk through the door. You can’t help but notice the welcoming warm, honeyed amber tones and sophisticated elegant interiors with earthy accents of bronze. High ceilings are complemented with statement chandeliers, soft leather seating and smoked glass mirroring. The perfect setting for lunch or a special evening meal. When we arrived, General Manager Franco Di Tommaso explained that the menu had been revamped to cater for more local preferences and that we must try all the new items as well as some famous signature ones. That was music to my ears!

We began with the Seared Tuna Tataki with Wafu dressing. Cut in thin slices and infused with grapeseed and sesame oil, it was full of flavour with a hint of garlic and Japanese mustard. The texture was soft and the rice vinegar enhanced the taste without being too overpowering.

The second appetiser was also new to the menu. The Black Cod Korokke with mustard miso sauce. Imported from Alaska, the black cod was simply delicious. Combined with chives, mashed potatoes and miso bechamel sauce, it was truly a subliminal addition to the menu. Coated in Japanese breadcrumbs it was crunchy yet soft to bite. The mustard miso sauce complemented this starter perfectly.

fact magazine 55 DINING DELIGHT •

The popular Homemade Corn Tacos with piquant Wagyu arrived next. Since opening at the end of last year, almost 5,000 of them have been ordered! It was easy to see why this particular appetiser is a firm favourite. The Wagyu, which had been marinated for 24 hours, was juicy and flavoursome, contrasting excellently with the homemade taco shells. Garnished with galbi and sriracha sauces with fresh cress and lime to the side, these were mini bites of heaven.

Franco explained the reason customers keep returning to Sumosan is because: “We don’t compromise on quality. Food is the main focus here and that’s why we are one of the best Japanese restaurants in Doha. Our prices have remained the same and haven’t gone up and we consistently provide excellent service.”

Speaking of which, as I polished off the last taco a delightful mocktail was brought out for me to try. Made with fresh orange juice, passion fruit, strawberry puree and homemade Thai syrup, the Akai Fuji was light and refreshing. But you have to literally burst a giant bubble to drink this beauty. There’s a reason it’s one of the most Instagrammable drinks on the menu!

The Fried Tofu with Shitake Mushrooms and spicy teriyaki arrived as our first main dish. Coated with cornflour it had been dried and marinated overnight before being deep fried. Sprinkled with shitake mushrooms and toban teriyaki sauce, it was firm and yet had a soft texture. Topped with enoki mushrooms and chives, it was a mouth-watering choice with hints of garlic, ginger and soy. It was also an ideal option for vegetarians.

Head Chef Dario Mangoni brought out the Miso Baby Chicken next. It had been marinated in a unique sauce including hatcho miso, garlic, soy, mirin, ginger and shishimi before being chargrilled and lightly garnished with an assortment of roasted nuts and seeds. The crispy coating paired magnificently with the tender chicken, giving it a unique and tasty texture. Dario was particularly excited for us to try another new item on the menu, the Aburi. A bite size trio of traditional flavours. The Toro with Foie Gras consisted of lightly cooked tuna with Rayu dressing and Kizami wasabi. Smooth and velvety, it melted in the mouth. The Salmon with Ikura and caramelised onions was equally divine but my favourite was the Wagyu A9 with Caviar that had been imported from Iran. The high-grade Waygu with truffle and chives was succulent and devoured in an instant. Another delectable item from the menu was the Shishito peppers with yuzu den miso. They had just arrived from Japan and had been gently fried with yuzu juice and rice vinegar. Don’t be fooled by the size of the peppers, they may be small but they were surprisingly full of flavour. A must try side dish. No meal is complete without dessert and we were pleasantly surprised with the latest addition to go on the menu. The Green Tea and Banana Cake with Madagascan vanilla ice cream sent my taste buds into orbit! Garnished with caramelised bananas and salted caramel sauce, this exquisite treat hits the sweet spot beautifully. ✤

SOPHISTICATED, GRAND AND CONTEMPORARY

Ailsa Whyatt spends a glamourous evening at the newly-renovated Four Seasons Hotel Library Lounge

In the days of Prohibition in the United States, a special password or knock on the door gave you access to somewhere in which to smoke cigars, quench your thirst and listen to jazz. Tucked at the back of the elegant Four Seasons Hotel, Doha, is the newly refurbished Library Lounge, where New Orleans Prohibition nostalgia meets Middle Eastern essence. Gone however, are the days of needing a password to get in.

1920s’ jazz, cleverly under-lit book shelves, plush leather furnishings, solid woods and stylish décor create a cosy space to settle down nestled amongst the library books and humidors.

Looking after us this evening is JT, the Library Lounge’s mixologist, who is bursting with ideas about flavours and presentation, and who is passionate about ensuring guests are fed and watered with the unobtrusive attentiveness that Four Seasons is so tremendously good at.

Whilst we await our food, JT brings us our drinks. It is not often I am impressed by ice, but all the beverages we tried were served with transparently clear, hand-cut ice, for which JT and his team have a specific ice preparation room. Uniform blocks of the cold stuff, some branded with the Library Lounge logo, are an impressive touch to some rather extraordinary flavours, all of which contain nods to the Middle East.

My guest has a Mexican Bookmaker – infused with lime, honey, basil and watermelon, dusted with spicy Himalayan salt, thyme and basil in the shape of a bookmark, and served with parmesan chunks sitting on a sliver of red capsicum and basil as an accompaniment to soak up the spice. I am treated to the Le Souq Passoa – a shimmering, pink glass of beauty containing

a Brazilian and herbaceous Italian beverage, passionfruit and lavender glitter, adorned by an edible lavender flower and served with passionfruit ‘caviar’. It contains agar-agar (a plant-based gelatin) and passionfruit purée dripped very slowly through vegetable oil to create passionfruit pearls. Both are refreshing, light and crucially, JT’s own creations.

Our starters arrive. Watermelon Salad, Edamame and Crunchy Avocado. The sweet watermelon, which spends three days in a vacuum bag condensing its flavours, contrasts with lemon and vinaigrette dressing and nutty sunflower seeds. The edamame are plentiful and lightly salted, followed by a glorious blend of creamy avocados encased in a crunchy tempura served with the most delicious zingy yuzu aioli, as well as a spicy mayonnaise that has an extremely firm kick! I could gorge on avocadoes all night.

Next up are the Pulled-Beef Sliders; brioche buns packed full with their delicious contents and then the BBQ Beef Short Ribs. Oh my! These ribs have been slowly cooked for four hours, steeped and simmered in smoked water and drizzled in a perfectly balanced homemade BBQ sauce. With secret ingredients like chipotle paste and alpi sauce, they are the best of their kind I have ever tasted. The broccolini and baby carrots are charred yet crunchy and round off the dish deliciously. Thank goodness for my avocado self-restraint!

We sample a delicious rhubarb and ginger non-alcoholic gin, as JT talks us through similar hand-crafted beverage offerings that Library Lounge boasts – each with its own personality, flavour and accompanying garnish. From Pearson’s Hibiscus & Rose non-

alcoholic gin, to Uska’s chocolate non-alcoholic vodka, there is something to tempt you away from the classic (and in my opinion often too heavy and sweet) mocktails that are the mainstay of drinks menus. All come served with their own beautiful garnishes and accompaniments, such as edible gold and silver pearls, rendering them a unique and delicious offering.

We sample the Oiled Vieux Cave, a trio of Cuban, American rye and herbaceous Italian beverage, delicately blended with a wash of coconut oil which lifts the drink to coconutty nirvana, and the Deadpool, which is full of citrus and apple aromas, juniper beverage and lightened with peppermint cordial.

JT brings our desserts: Crunchy Profiteroles and Madagascar Vanilla Crème Brûlée. Two profiteroles, one with hazelnut ice cream and the other containing strawberry and basil ice cream are beautifully presented, with edible flowers, strawberries and passionfruit jewels scattered around the edges, and are dripping with hot chocolate sauce, poured à la table for extra wow! Our crème brûlée is equally beautiful, with meringue-adorned blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and beads of both mango and raspberry purées and the kind of crunch that a crème brûlée should always showcase. A bonus dessert – a liquid Tiramisu comes with chocolate swirls encrusted on the outside of the glass, and contains a moreish blend of Jamaican, coffee and a creamy Irish beverage, with mascarpone cheese, with hints of vanilla and cinnamon, topped off with an elegant white chocolate garnish.

Celebrated for its original, handcrafted beverages and range of cigars, Library Lounge should also be celebrated for its concise yet varied menu, which is set to expand in the coming weeks. Excellent news for me, as it gives me even more reasons to return and try everything else. Not sure I will manage to stay away from ordering the short ribs for a second, third or fourth time, though. They were perfection!

It’s also worth noting that the Library Lounge is set to reopen the terrace soon too, which is not only one of the nicest in town, but also a wonderful way to enjoy the classy spot without smoke. ✤

DIVINE DELIGHTS

Kalvin Ng sampled treats both healthy and decadent at the afternoon tea at AtTEAtude.

AtTEAtude is one of the finest hotel lobby lounges I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing in Doha. From the location to the décor and the carefully selected food and beverage menu, the outlet, at the Alwadi Doha – MGallery Hotel Collection is the ideal place for a light meal, a catch-up with friends or a casual work meeting.

The lounge, located in Msheireb Downtown, justifiably won ‘Best Tea Room in Doha’ at the 2021 Fact Dining Awards. It’s located just to the side of the hotel entrance, making it central yet exuding a relaxing ambiance. The interior is modern with touches of Qatari tradition: comfortable maroon lounges sit atop cream and purple patterned carpets on wooden parquet floors. A wall of artfully placed coloured glass bottles adds a touch of whimsy to the chic, yet cosy interior. Gentle ceiling lamps accentuate the natural light streaming in from the outdoor terrace. The menu emphasises on healthy options, but healthy certainly wasn’t boring! We were invited to try the ‘Healthy Lunch’ menu. For a set price, you could choose a sandwich, a salad and a smoothie from a wide selection. We began our meal with the Big Apple bagel. Generous slices of smoked salmon were layered on a light spreading of dill cream cheese, capers and pickled onions on a toasted sesame-seeded bagel. It was a great interpretation of a New York deli classic with a subtle balance of flavours. We followed it up with a Grilled Chicken Ciabatta. Perfectly seasoned slices of grilled chicken breast were paired with fresh avocado. It was slightly more substantial than the bagel, yet still remarkably light and balanced. Both were served with a fresh arugula and

tomato salad. Vegetarians can choose between a vegan burger and a vegetable sandwich.

As for the salads, the Organic Quinoa Salad really stood out. The innovative combination of quinoa, avocado and mango with passionfruit dressing was fresh, tangy and invigorating. Equally refreshing was the Green Smoothie consisting of apple, spinach, avocado and almond milk. It was healthy and delicious!

If, however, you’re interested in treating yourself to something more indulgent, AtTEAtude has a wide selection of freshly made pastries, croissants and desserts. The Afternoon Tea for Two is a decadent way to experience a mix of sweet and savoury delights. The presentation was a feast for the eyes. Canapes were presented on a three-tiered mirrored tray with gold trim, reminiscent of a gilded birdcage. The bottom tier included bitesized turkey ham and cheese sandwiches; a light and tantalising vegetable and mango wrap; and puff pastries filled with just the right amount of halloumi and zaatar. A delicate tartelette of olives along with bresaola and melon canapes rounded off the selection. With the savoury pastries well and truly devoured, it was time to satisfy our sweet tooth with the selection of desserts. Chocolate lovers have lots to look forward to. You could start with the Chocolate and Peer Verrine featuring candied pear in a rich chocolate sauce, topped off with a gold leaf – it is an indulgent afternoon tea, after all. Another delight was a delicate, bite-sized parcel of chocolate thins filled with cream and orange slices. The pastry chef’s skills were clearly on display here, as well as on the delightful matcha strawberry tart, topped off with milk chocolate. However, no respectable high tea would be complete without scones. AtTEAtude presented a delightful fluffy version with dried cranberries and orange, served with the obligatory clotted cream and jam. Now, what do you spread on the scone first, the jam or the cream? This simple question has divided people in the United Kingdom for many generations. Even the late British monarch got involved, when Queen Elizabeth II revealed that one prefers one’s scone with jam first, then cream. Whichever way you have it, the scone, accompanied with a traditional pot of hot English tea, was the perfect way to end our meal in Doha’s most relaxing and sophisticated tea lounge. ✤

A CHIC CITY ESCAPE

FACT’s Homara Choudhary steps into a luxurious haven at the new Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach.

Right in the heart of Doha, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, is a glittering new jewel.

The Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach opened its doors over the summer in Qatar’s financial district and offers magnificent views of the city and the Arabian Gulf. This modern five-star retreat is just 12 miles away from Hamad International Airport and only minutes from the City Center Doha shopping mall, Corniche promenade, and the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, making it the ideal choice for weekend getaways or a family staycation. I arrive on a Friday afternoon and I am greeted by the friendly reception team. Lillian offers me a refreshing hibiscus drink as she swiftly checks me in. The lobby is impressively bright with floor-to-ceiling windows and cream marble flooring. The accents of gold, white and black punctuated throughout the hotel nod towards traditional Middle Eastern culture while the captivating design is both contemporary and chic.

Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach is the latest addition to Wyndham’s portfolio of three luxury hotels in Qatar, which has two further properties currently under development. With 48 apartments, 30 suites and 200 rooms, the hotel caters for all your accommodation needs with stunning views of the city or the sea. The property exudes effortless class with a state-of-the-art fitness studio and a spa and wellness centre which hosts a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. There is even an outdoor

pool. Business travellers have six spacious corporate meeting rooms to choose from.

The hotel’s General Manager, Hayden Edgtton, says he and his team are looking forward to welcoming guests from all over the world ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: “It’s a significant moment for us. Qatar is known for its thriving and sustainable economic plans and we are confident that years to come will have even more success stories to tell.

“The journey of opening a new hotel is always an exhilarating experience and to see it from up-close, breathing life into concrete and stones to transform a building into a place where everyone can belong and enjoy, it's truly amazing.”

Fredrik showed me to my Executive one-bedroom sea-view suite on the 23rd floor. It was absolutely breath-taking! The glorious 90sq/m space was larger than most apartments in the city. The palatial suite included a separate dining area and a fully equipped kitchen with the latest mod-cons, including a built-in microwave and a full-sized fridge. The high ceilings and sumptuous off-white décor combined with stunning gold fittings and elegant furniture were mesmerising.

But it was the bedroom that blew me away. Views of West Bay Beach and the Arabian Gulf were captivatingly framed in the large window. More spacious than the living room, an opulent velvet lounge chair in teal, a matching feature wall and a king-size bed with pillow-top bedding were all artfully arranged to maximise both space and impact. sleek white marble bathroom complete with a tub and shower was waiting to soothe my aches away.

As tempting as it was to slip into a plush white robe and soak in the bath, I was meeting a friend for dinner at the allday dining restaurant bãzãr on the ground floor and didn’t want to be late.

We arrived for dinner and were greeted by supervisor Raheem who suggested we try some of bãzãr’s signature mocktails. Being a huge tea fan, I opted for the Earl Grey and Tonic. Delicately light, the taste was complemented by its ginger and rosemary notes. My friend went for the Indonesian Jamu; she was excited to be able to drink turmeric, known for its powerful healing properties. The mocktail, with its perfectly balanced sweetness, didn’t disappoint.

Before our starters a basket of warm bread arrived with butter. I couldn’t resist trying a fluffy seeded roll, which hit all the right (carbohydrate) spots. Thankfully my appetiser arrived shortly afterwards, otherwise I would have devoured the entire basket! I had ordered the Roasted Cauliflower Steak. Generous in size, it was large enough for two people to share. It was deliciously firm and had been drizzled in green tahini sauce. The za’atar gave it an interesting twist.

Next to arrive was the Roasted Chicken served with French beans, bok choy, cherry tomatoes and corianderjalapeno sauce. Tender and juicy, it was cooked to absolute perfection. The standout dish had to be the

Freekeh Lamb my friend ordered. Cooked slowly, it was served with broccoli, green peas, pine nuts and infused with the subtle taste of cardamom. The lamb was sliced into succulent bite size pieces – a creative surprise to this popular Middle Eastern delight.

Since we were both full from our respective main courses, we decided to share dessert and went for the Valrhona chocolate mousse. The dark chocolate was frothy and creamy in texture and the perfect partner to our green tea, which completed our superb culinary experience.

I woke up in the morning, refreshed after a deep and peaceful night’s sleep, and headed to the gym for an early morning workout in the state-of-the-art fitness studio. Fully equipped with brand new strength and cardio machines, there are even yoga mats if you want to practise your tree pose! The outdoor pool is located on the same floor and is the perfect way to start the day, with views of Doha’s famous skyline. I worked up an appetite and I was ravenous by the time I hit the lavish breakfast buffet at bãzãr.

There is a live cooking station for eggs and I treated myself to a fully loaded omelette with all the trimmings. Irfan brought me a latte and suggested I try the fresh juices too. The watermelon drink was revitalising and quenched my post-workout thirst. The buffet was full of appetising choices, including breakfast cereals, exotic fruits, yogurts, hot food options and a very tempting display of freshly baked pastries. It was impossible not to indulge!

Earlier this year, Japan opened its doors to tourists for the first time after the pandemic. Offering a blend of both, cultural and touristy experiences, it’s the perfect destination to visit especially this time of the year.

• DAYCATION

Autumn is a beautiful season to experience Japan. The weather is pleasant with temperatures never exceeding 23 degrees Celsius. The elevated parts of the country are cooler and may even experience snowfall, such as the Japanese Alps. There’s a wide range of things to see and do from religious shrines and museums to beaches, hot springs and gardens. There are touristy gems to explore too, such as traditional tea ceremonies and noodle-making workshops. In this feature, we explore three cities, offering some of Japan’s best.

TOKYO

Start at Ueno Park, a popular city space, which transforms into an expanse of maple and honey-hued foliage in autumn. It’s lined with over 8,000 trees including ginkgo, zelkova and cherry, features a pond with an extensive lotus bed and attracts a variety of bird species in the winter. Cultural highlights at Ueno Park include Tokyo National Museum, the city’s most popular art museum. It houses a comprehensive collection of artwork and cultural objects from Asia with a focus on ancient and medieval Japanese and Asian art along the Silk Road. The museum has many galleries, with different displays and gardens as well as restaurants and shops.

Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines are an important part of Tokyo’s landscape. There are several that you can visit in and around Ueno Park. You can’t miss Kan'ei-ji Temple’s five-storey pagoda. It’s one of the few structures in the original Buddhist temple complex that has withstood calamities such as war and fire; the original layout consisted of over 30 buildings spread across a considerable area of the park. Kan'ei-ji Temple is home to an engraved stone said to be a memorial to the souls of insects that died during a scientific study – a testament to the Buddhist principle of non-violence.

Ueno Tōshō-gū, which used to be part of the old Kan’eiji Temple complex, is a Shinto shrine in Ueno Park and a great example of Shinto architecture in the Edo period of Japanese history. The carvings on parts of the shrine are said to depict a total of over 200 species of plants and animals. Some areas permit free entry while others have a fee and some are out of bounds.

Other popular religious sites in the vicinity include Sensō ji, an ancient Buddhist temple and Tokyo’s oldest, located in Asakusa. There is quite a bit to cover here, from the Thunder Gate, featuring a massive, 700-kilogram paper lantern, to the two waraji or straw sandals, each weighing 400 kilograms. to the stately five-storey pagoda and main hall devoted to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Exploring all of this could easily take an entire day. However, Nakamise-dōri, the shopping street is lined with many food stalls so, you can rest and grab a bite to eat. Meiji Shrine is nestled in a forest covered by over 300 different species of trees numbering more than 100,000. The tranquil shrine grounds offer respite from the hustle and bustle of the urban cityscape.

Nature lovers can also explore Hama-riky ū Gardens. Beautifully landscaped, the gardens boast a teahouse that serves traditional Japanese tea and sweets. Don’t miss the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony from October 22 to 23 where you can experience Japan’s tea tradition, complete with wagashi or local confections, as well as traditional dance performances.

The Imperial Palace East Gardens are only a 10-minute walk from Tokyo station. Stroll through the grounds of the former Edo Castle and climb the ruins. While none of the main buildings remain today, the moats, walls, entrance gates and several guardhouses still exist. The garden itself is picturesque and wonderful to behold, with colourful flowers and plants that bloom all year round.

Often seen as a day trip from Tokyo, the mountain town of Nikko is the perfect base for Alpine sightseeing, particularly during autumn when the nearby Kegon Falls are absolutely resplendent. You can opt for a hiking or a bicycle tour. The scenic routes, with stunning views and colourful foliage are a true feast for the senses.

OKINAWA

Home to magnificent beaches and coastlines teaming with corals and other underwater life, Okinawa is a great destination to enjoy one last summer holiday before winter. The weather’s warm enough to enjoy the sand and sea and you can explore a range of activities including jet skiing, kayaking, parasailing, snorkelling and diving. Manza Beach is well-known and though it’s part of a resort, it’s open to the general public too. A 300-metre sandy stretch offers ample space to sunbathe or simply relax with family or friends. You can enjoy water activities as well. Don’t miss the chance to take in the blue expanse, standing atop Cape Manzamo, listening to the waves crashing against the rocks.

Yonaha Maehama Beach is also popular and known for its stunning sunsets. It’s relatively quiet, stretches for seven kilometres and is said to have the whitest sand in the Pacific.

Mibaru Beach is surrounded by coral reefs that you can explore aboard a glass-bottomed boat. These reefs are a hive of activity. Unusual rock formations also stand in the water, adding to the beauty of this white-sand beach flanked by clear blue waters. Other nearby attractions include Okinawa World theme park, where you can explore the Gyokusendō, a massive, five-kilometre-long limestone cave, and sample the local snake-infused medicinal drink, habushu – be brave! Explore traditional cuisine at Makishi Public Market, dubbed by the locals as the ‘Kitchen of Okinawa’. An erstwhile tributary state of imperial Ming China, Okinawa is known for its native Ryūkyūan culture, which is distinctly different from the mainland. Its cuisine is influenced by Chinese cooking styles. Okinawan soba is quite popular and made using flour rather than the traditional buckwheat. October 17 is even celebrated as Okinawa Soba Day. Gōyā Chanpurū, a stir-fry dish of bitter melon combined with eggs and tofu, is another staple. Soy-

based ingredients such as tofu are commonly used – a sweet dish to try is Jīmami dōfu or peanut tofu squares drizzled with sweetened soy sauce. A popular side dish is Umi-budō, which translates to sea grapes. Having a salty, ocean-like flavour, they are eaten raw and pop in your mouth. Other shores to watch out for include Furuzamami Beach, a popular snorkelling destination, in addition to offering other beach activities; Zanpa Beach, which is said to be one of the best for swimming even during low tide; Aharen Beach, which is budget-friendly and good for snorkelling; and Aragusuku Beach, known for its stunning coral reefs. A caveat, typhoons are common in Okinawa this time of the year so ensure you double check before you visit. Shurijo Castle Revival Festival is one of Naha, the capital of Okinawa’s, biggest and most important autumn events, celebrating the legacy of the Kingdom of the Ryūkyūs. Immerse yourself in the cultural performances. The Naha Giant Tug-of-War Festival is another one to note.

KANAGAWA

No holiday is complete without a bit of relaxation. Kanagawa is well-known for its hot spring resorts. Stay at one of the ryokans or traditional inns and soak in the mineral-rich waters. Many allow daytime visitors too but charge a fee.

Other tourist attractions include Ōwakudani, a volcanic valley. You can walk along the trail into the volcanic zone with numerous steam vents and bubbling pools. The views from here are to die for. A popular touristy thing to do is eat a boiled egg that’s cooked in the hot spring pools. The shell turns black due to the chemical reaction and eating it is said to prolong one’s life by seven years.

Enjoy a sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashi with a view of the nearby mountains and Mount Fuji. One of the famed Hakone Shrine’s traditional gates or torri stands in Lake Ashi and is a popular photo spot.

Located in Kamakura, Hōkoku-ji Temple is popular for its spectacular bamboo garden and a tea house where you can enjoy matcha green tea while taking in the surrounding view. Kōtoku-in Temple is known for the Great Buddha of Kamakura. A symbol of the city, this colossal statue towers at over 13 metres.

Nestled in a valley, Hase-kannon temple has the biggest Kannon statues in Japan. In order to reach the main hall, you need to scale almost 400 steps but the spectacular view of autumnal colours from the top makes the journey worth it. The capital city of Yokohama has some interesting things to see and do. The CupNoodles Museum in Minato Mirai 21, an urban centre, features exhibitions about instant noodles and hands-on workshops. Yokohama Chinatown, one of the biggest in the world, has numerous restaurants and food shops to try.

Yamashita Park is a popular place to relax and take a walk while enjoying waterfront views of the Port of Yokohama. Sankei-en Garden, a large traditional Japanese garden, with a ponds, streams and undulating pathways, is popular too. ✤

Missoni’s iconic zig-zag stripes make a bold return in the brand’s latest collections for both men and women.
ZIG AH!

Suggestions,

silhouettes and inspirations introduced for summer and amplified, creating a bridge between seasons are featured in the women’s pre-autumn pieces – a prelude to the upcoming winter show.

Like two worlds meeting and merging in a play of cross-pollinations, a typically Milanese bourgeois elegance mixes with a cool spirit which, vibrating with street suggestions, recalls New York in the 1990s, a creative hub for the rise of new styles and trends. The differences between these two, apparently distant, worlds disappear, giving life to a look transcending the concept of time and space.

Creative Director Alberto Caliri demonstrates a concrete femininity, ageless and stylish. Relaxed and soft volumes are combined with more fitted silhouettes, for an imperfect balance, reflecting the needs of today’s women.

Warm, cosy knitted coats find their place next to cropped bombers. Cigarette pants are juxtaposed to cargo-inspired styles, crafted from soft and precious fabrics. Laminated jeans are enriched with raschel inserts, while leather shines with a glossy finishing. The world of art, which has always been a great source of inspiration for Missoni, deeply influenced the brand’s men's collection for the autumn-winter 2022 season. In particular, informal abstract art, a movement that developed in Italy during the 1940s served as a starting point not only for the distinctive graphics characterising the collection, but also for the colour palette and the highly tactile textures.

GALLOPING INTO A NEW ERA

Montblanc has reinvented the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec, a chronograph that takes its inspiration from Paris’ Champ-de-Mars horse racing track.

The History

The story of this remarkable watch began 201 years ago when Nicolas Rieussec, watchmaker to the French King, tested his latest invention, a timekeeper designed to record the precise times of all the horses as they crossed the finish line at Champ-de-Mars.

The device used a fixed nib to place a drop of ink on two rotating counters (one for the minutes, the other for the seconds) each time a horse crossed the finish line. His invention was a success and a few weeks later, he presented it to the Academy of Science in Paris, whose members were fascinated and named it a ‘chronograph’ taken from the Greek word chronos for time and graphein to write. The word chronograph was born and Nicolas Rieussec became the inventor of the world’s first inking chronograph.

The First Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Collection

Fast forward to the modern day and the year 2007, Montblanc unveiled an intriguing wristwatch version of Nicolas Rieussec’s technology, featuring its first in-house movement. The configuration of Rieussec’s design was interpreted with two horizontally aligned chronograph counters, one for 60 elapsed seconds, the other indicating 30 minutes. Instead of each counter being static with its own rotating hand, the counters were the ones to turn and a single index marker placed between the two indicated the elapsed time.

A New Era

Montblanc is unveiling two new fresh and unexpected interpretations of this timepiece – one in stainless steel, and the other in DLC-coated stainless steel (limited to 500 pieces). Both come in a new ergonomic pebble-shaped case measuring 43mm in diameter (the previous size was 44.8mm) with blue details that recall the colour of ink – as a nod to the original device – and an onion-shaped crown.

The Parisian Connection

There are a number of elements that celebrate The City of Light. A graphic Clous de Paris motif on the dial is a traditional design that originates from the geometric design of Paris’s cobbled streets. The motif, not uncommon in fine watchmaking, is more unusually continued onto the textile strap and the oscillating weight.

Other modern details include open-worked indexes; dynamic dauphine hands with Super-LumiNova; dark grey baton indexes; a new typography on the chronograph counters; a black, semi-transparent sapphire crystal on the case back; blued screws on the dial and movement; and

strong colour contrasts between the anthracite grey and electric blue. Completing the Paris connection, a mention of the Academy of Sciences, Paris is engraved on the flange, as a reminder that the academy validated Rieussec’s invention in 1821. The name Chronographe Nicolas Rieussec is also engraved at 12 o’clock.

In-House Movement

The Montblanc Star Legacy Chronograph Nicolas Rieussec is powered by the self-winding manufacture monopusher chronograph movement MB R200 that was the very first in-house movement by the maison. Everything in the movement has been designed to reach a high level of technical efficiency and aesthetics. ✤

LIFE THROUGH A LENS

Qatar’s dynamic art and culture scene has exploded recently, especially ahead of this year's FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 with the launch of new exhibitions and public arts going on display every week. Home to some of the best museums and galleries in the Middle East, local artists have been given the opportunity to showcase their incredible work.

Jaber Ali Al Marri is an artist who fell in love with photography at the tender age of 10 when his parents bought him his first camera. The 28-year-old hasn’t looked back since and his unique talent has caught the eye of some of the industry’s biggest fashion houses, most notably Christian Dior, who he worked with on a recent perfume campaign.

Jaber said he was inspired by his parents who would take pictures of him and his siblings as children: “I remember my dad and my mother would take photos and videos of us as kids. It spiked my interest, how the older generation loved Polaroids and how they really attached their feelings to them. “In our digital age now, I feel the same. My Dad used to buy camcorders to shoot us and my mum always took pictures of us growing up. It sparked something in me. I wanted to document everything.”

Photographer Jaber Ali Al Marri discusses art, storytelling and the role of social media with FACT’s Homara Choudhary.
fact magazine90 • ARTS & CULTURE

Jaber said as he got older, taking photos became more than just a hobby, it became his passion but he had to be in the right mindset to take them: “I can only take photos when I am happy! It’s attached to happiness for me, I can’t take photographs when I am upset or sad.”

When asked what inspires him, Jaber answered: “Everything! My inspiration comes from everyday life, songs I’ve heard, movies I’ve seen, nature too. But most of all I like photographing moments. I am a huge fan of vintage photography. I love capturing emotions.

“I also have a fair collection of modern photographs, because that is what most people find appealing, but my personal favourites are abstract photos and vintage photography.”

The young snapper doesn’t like to be put in an artistic box. He said he prefers to keep his style varied and enjoys being creative with the lens: “I do everything in photography. I photograph fashion, jewellery, food and, at the same time, I enjoy capturing people, their moods and moments.”

But Jaber explained it’s not just the subject of the lens that makes a great photograph, editing also plays its part: “It can convey certain emotions and feelings. Editing can enhance the photo. It’s the same in fashion, with editing you can make the picture pop more. It’s the same with product photography and portraits too.”

Jaber, who has a serious social media presence with 133,000 followers, said his Instagram page has something for everyone, and that his favourite subject is the moon: “The sky to me is absolutely fascinating. I have taken so many pictures of the moon and I also adore taking photos of

clouds. I am a big fan of physics. I also studied mathematics but now I digress. I am basically a bit of a nerd!” He is modest with his geekiness and puts his growing popularity down to living in a country where everyone loves a good photo: “Everyone here loves taking pictures in Qatar! But I like to take my photos with a professional Canon camera, although it’s the lens that is important.”

Jaber said his social media account initially began as an emotional outlet with spiritual quotes and poems in 2020. It became really popular and friends encouraged him to post his photos because he carried his camera with him. Everywhere. “I started with quotes and poems and then I transitioned into quotes with photos and now I post mainly photographs. My friends were the ones who prompted me to share my work.”

When he’s not shooting models or the moon, Jaber reveals some of his other passions: “I started studying the economy. I read a lot of books and my new love is cryptocurrency. I enjoy watching how it moves, how it’s heavily influenced by psychology and politics of course.”

But it’s not all about the economy. The bright young star also enjoys a good drama, especially if it’s been made by the American screenwriter, producer and author Shonda Rhimes. His favourites include: Bridgerton, Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy. Jaber’s other idols include Steve Jobs and Stephen Hawking. Like the moon, there are many spheres to this extremely intelligent and talented photographer, a rising star in his own right. ✤

BIG SCREEN

The Sandman Only Murders inthe Building

Need to Know:

The Sandman is an American fantasy drama television series based on the comic books of the same name written by fantasy author Neil Gaiman. The story revolves around Dream (also known as Morpheus and Sandman), the entity that controls dreams and nightmares. He gets imprisoned in the living world for 100 years. After escaping, he begins a journey to find his stolen belongings to regain his power – a highly anticipated show for those who love this genre.

Creators: Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer, Allan Heinberg

Cast : Tom Sturridge, Charles Dance, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Jenna Coleman

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Neil Gaiman is well known for his books full of imagination. However, The Sandman, written between 1989 and 1996, was considered unfilmable until now. With complex scenarios and a hard-to-adapt storyline, that The Sandman has taken this long to make it to screen is a good reason to give this TV series a chance. The King of Dreams (Tom Sturridge) is captured by Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance), an occultist looking to summon and imprison Death, one of Morpheus' siblings. However, Dream is the one trapped by Roderick's dark magic. He stays locked in a glass dome for a century before he finally escapes. But when he returns to The Dreaming (his world), he finds it destroyed with few remaining servants. Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), the head librarian and one of Sandman's most loyal assistants, helps him in his journey to locate his sand pouch, magical helm and ruby. These tools will allow him to become powerful again. The show is filled with dark elements, and two other characters worth mentioning are the Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook) and Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman). A must-watch for those who love the Neil Gaiman universe full of references from religion and mythology.

Need to Know:

Launched in 2021, the TV show is an American mystery comedy-drama that gained success and recently released its second season. The first season ended with a cliffhanger and season two revolves around a new assassination that directly involves the three main characters: Charles, Oliver and Mabel. The latest set of episodes brings the unusual trio back to solve another mysterious murder in their building complex.

Creators: Steve Martin, John Hoffman

Cast : Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Cara Delevingne

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The unusual friendship between Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) grew stronger after they solved the mystery around the murder of one of the residents in the Arconia, the iconic building where they live. But just as they think they can go back to their ordinary lives, a new assassination happens; this time, they are the main suspects in the crime. The interesting aspect of this show, and probably in all the best crime shows, is that every episode introduces a new element that gives the audience a different impression of who the murderer is. Only Murders in the Building is not a regular crime TV series, though. The masters of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short, take the show to a completely different level with lots of laughter, wellbuilt characters and an amazing performance from the duo. An enjoyable watch if you are looking for something fun yet interesting; just be aware that you will be hooked!

ON THE RECORD

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

Keep On Smiling

Formed in 2007, Two Door Cinema Club are a three-member band from Northern Ireland – Alex Trimble on vocals, rhythm guitar, beats and synths; Sam Halliday on lead guitar and backing vocals and Kevin Baird on bass, synths and backing vocals. Their fifth and latest album, Keep On Smiling via Glassnote Records, starts off with the instrumental piece Messenger AD, which stands out from the other songs with its drones and dark synths. What follows is a surprise – Blue Light, a peppy number. However, this infectious beat then continues.

In many of the tracks, you’ll discover a background choir chiming in, sometimes with a playful vibe and at other times, possibly, to underline the emotions behind the lyrics. Either way, this format tempts you to sing along. A variety of themes pop up throughout the LP, which are easily relatable: “We’re leaving today

In search of a new life. We’ll change our colours and change our shape” on Blue Light suggests optimism and hopefulness; “It’s always a matter of time If I can get what I want, I’ll know it’s not enough” as on Millionaire, points towards an underlying realisation that no matter how much you have, at some point, you’ll want more; “We all get it wrong, so don’t stay mad for long” as on Wonderful Life is an exhortation to take back your life, your power regardless of the past.

In terms of the music, the synths and guitars keep things upbeat, offering dancerock vibes with ‘80s pop influences.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

The Pink Album

Unloved is an alternative music band formed in 2015 by American musicians Jade Vincent and Keefus Ciancia and Northern Irish musician David Holmes. They released their latest The Pink Album via Heavenly Recordings, which hits differently from the off. Speaking of the sound of the album, think electro-punk, percussion and turbo synths, glam rock stompers, throbbing bass…there’s variety, oh yes! Afterall, there’s plenty of room to explore across a whopping 22 songs that could seem never ending. The intro Rainbrose is an instrumental piece. It’s almost psychedelic with the many effects and church-choir chime “Ahhh”. Girl Can’t Help It combines catchy drumbeats with a trance-like vibe, which seems like a contrast but works, transporting you to a different zone. WTC screams ‘60s psych pop through electronica. The lyrics explore strong emotions. On WTC, for instance, “No one's gonna hurt you, baby no one's gonna make you sad,” followed by a shift from “You're the best thing I ever had” to “I'm the best thing you ever had,” all points towards some kind of redemption. “She makes no sound with her subtle smile (fire). Silently becoming who she was all the while (fire),” on early single Mother’s Been A Bad Girl is imbued with the kind of fierce courage that’s often accompanied by the vulnerability of letting go, which makes it relatable.

Fairly Tale

A boy, a dog, a mystery to solve and an adversary to defeat. What’s not to like? Stephen King is a masterful storyteller and early in the pandemic, he asked himself: “What could you write that would make you happy?” The result is a soaring tale of good versus evil in a dark fantasy world. Seventeen-year-old Charlie Reade is a regular high school kid with a very dysfunctional home life. He starts to do odd jobs for Mr Bowditch, an old man who lives in a big old house with a big dog, Radar. When the old man dies, he leaves Charlie the key to an alternative universe where evil powers are intent on destroying their own world and ours. Charlie and Radar team up to save the day.

Killers Of A Certain Age

This book was an instant New York Times bestseller and, given the subject matter, it’s no surprise. As is observed on publisher Penguin Random House’s description: “Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes that’s their secret weapon,” and therein lies the attraction and beauty of this tale.

Billie, Mary Alice, Helen and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for 40 years. Now their talents are considered oldschool and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills. Retirement looms but, of course, killers don’t get to just hang up their weapons. Now they’ve become the targets and they must work together to survive and teach their former bosses not to mess with killers of a certain age!

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Family Fliers The Very Britishness Big Numbers

A couple of stories have hit the headlines of late, including one from minor celebrity Vogue Williams (no, we don’t know her either), where plane travellers have refused to give up seats that they have pre-booked and, sometimes, paid extra for, in order for families to sit together.

Ms. Williams noted how she had got quite shirty towards a fellow traveller who did not want to move but, on being lambasted online for her sheer entitlement, she later backtracked and claimed it had been a joke that ‘didn’t land’. Hmm, really?!

Another person, who appeared on popular

Whatever you think about the death of Queen Elizabeth II, there’s absolutely no doubt that her passing, at the end of a 70-year reign, demonstrated some of the peculiarities and even, dare we say it, utter ridiculousness, of Britishness to the rest of the world. Of course, there was the expected pomp and ceremony of the official mourning period and funeral, but there were other fun things too. For example, the Royal apiarist telling the bees that they now have a new boss; the madness of ‘The Queue’ to see Her Majesty’s coffin lying in state which

Have you ever wondered how big a billion is? If, like us, big numbers seem a bit hard to comprehend, one way of looking at it is that a million hours is 114 years! A billion hours, though, starts to get complicated, particularly if you consider that in the UK a billion is a million million, whereas in the US it’s a thousand million. Suffice to say it’s a bloomin’ long time.

So, how about the latest announcement that the world has 20 quadrillion ants. The figure comes from a study by scientists
