Unearthing Hidden Gems and Celebrating Shining Stars

Half the year is over. Take a deep breath. Yes, we’re past the halfway mark. January to June is gone. If you blinked, you might have missed it. At the height of this summer season, and to celebrate moving beyond mid-year, we are celebrating in style. Like the typically spectacular Superbowl halftime show, we’ve put on a big show for you for this edition. For our cover story we’ve subverted the narrative and gone undercover. Our team has done some serious detective work to uncover off-beat places, undiscovered sites and untapped experiences to recommend to you. Some of the places and experiences you might have heard of, but perhaps never tried. Others will be completely new to you. Either way, we’re betting your curiosity will be aroused as much as mine was when we dug up these ideas. This cover story is all about uncovering unusual, inventive, interesting and inspiring things to do, as an individual, a couple, a small group of friends, or an entire family. I hope you enjoy our secret dossier of Doha’s dopest to-do list. June was awards month. It saw us celebrate the most important event of the year for the food and hospitality fraternity, and of course, for us, The Fact Dining Awards 2021. Modifying this year’s ceremony to accommodate Covid restrictions, over two consecutive days at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, the FACT team celebrated the crème de la crème of the Qatar dining scene, with awards handed out in segmented 30-minute timeslots for socially distanced groups of five. We celebrated 72 winners across 36 categories as more than 63,000 unique online votes were cast by the public, with winners receiving the coveted Fact Dining Awards 2021 plaques in addition to stylish goodie bags from our sponsors. We’re not just into awards, but rewards too. Your regular fix of fashion, arts, culture and travel is waiting for you in this edition, with all the usual features you look forward to. The clock is ticking though, so let’s get on with show.

rom June to August, local artists create and exhibit their paintings at the mall on the first-floor WestSouth hallway. The art display is hosted under the umbrella of Doha Festival City’s ‘Qatar Unites Us’ CSR initiative. Committed to supporting Qatar’s artists, Festival City will offer local painters their own canvas to unleash their artistic talent live during the mall’s working hours. Once finished, the paintings will be displayed across the mall, allowing guests to enjoy their shopping journey with a unique cultural experience. The self-taught Romanian artist, Cristina Dinu, a member of Doha Artist Collective Group, said: “Sports is a universal language, and therefore I decided to link my artworks to the much-awaited 2022 FIFA World Cup. A DATE WITH DELICIOUSNESS The Qinwan team talks authenticity, flavour diversity and global ambition. Tucking into a gorgeously presented box of luxury Qinwan dates is one of life’s great pleasures. The Qatari company, founded in 2017, offers inspired collections that combine Arabian culture with contemporary creativity. Through a focus on artisanal excellence, sustainability, and unparalleled quality – from the beautifully bespoke packaging to the exquisite range of fillings and customisation options – the award-winning Qinwan aims to bring the world’s most delicious dates to you. “At Qinwan, we love dates,” the brand’s team tells FACT simply. “Whether it’s visiting a friend’s home for dinner, enjoying time with family during the Holy Month of Ramadan, or arriving at an event, dates are a sign of hospitality in Middle Eastern culture. They feel familiar, but also special. From fig, ginger and orange, to saffron and cardamom; chocolate coated crunchy praline; lotus cream and pecan; and even peanut butter, our experts obsessively search for new and exciting flavour combinations to continue surprising and delighting our clients. “We pride ourselves on the exceptional, premium quality of our dates. We offer the prized Medjool, Ajwa, Saggi, Sukkari, and Khalas dates. Our premium Medjool dates are widely known as the ‘King of Dates’ due to their large size and delightful taste of rich caramel, hints of wild honey and a subtle touch of cinnamon, each one is lovingly cultured, chosen, and handpicked by the Qinwan team of date experts. From selecting the best locations for our dates to grow and carefully handpicking each one, to lovingly and locally filling them, we put freshness first. You can enjoy our dates knowing that each one is as fresh today as the day that it was harvested. “In addition to providing plain dates, Qinwan offers dates with over 50 varieties of delicious fillings!” That attention to detail extends to the Qinwan packaging. From vibrant and modern boxes to bespoke velvet and leather; elegant trays; and even an inspired Oriental wooden drawer box. Exceptional design is very much at the heart of the brand. It’s that merging of style and substance that has seen Qinwan experience a meteoric rise. “We’ve just returned from the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2021) as part of the official Qatari delegation,” the Qinwan team continues. “In addition to our own Qinwan stand, our dates were offered to visitors at the State of Qatar booth as a sign of our warm Qatari hospitality. That was wonderful to see given that our vision at Qinwan is to bring the world’s finest dates to a global audience. Today, with six boutiques in Qatar, and our website making our dates available internationally… “We are making our dream a reality, one date at a time.” ✤

Scientists have suggested that the friction caused among the sand grains as they rub together makes them deliver their unforgettable low-frequency melodies. There are less than 30 sites worldwide where you can experience this phenomenon, so it’s well worth the half-hour drive to the site. You head out from Doha down Salwa Road, taking Exit 24 to Messaieed, then continuing for 15km through two roundabouts before turning right towards Al-Kharrara.

UNEARTHING THE MYSTICAL SIREN SONGS OF THE SAND Who knew that the desert does its own version of karaoke in a poignant and beautiful way? When we got wind of this natural spectacle, our undercover investigations led us 40km south west of Doha to a place known mystically as ‘The Singing Sand Dunes of Qatar’. Here the large dunes emit a lyrical and distinctive humming noise as a result of wind and friction. Several crescent-shaped dunes make up the formations known

PAWS FOR REFLECTION Small actions can make the world of difference. A little altruism really goes a long way for one of Qatar’s most under-exposed voluntary activities. Paws Rescue Qatar is an animal welfare group that provides shelter and support to homeless or discarded dogs and cats in Qatar, where public volunteers can add value in several ways. You can impact an animal’s life with a low-commitment contribution by simply visiting Paws to walk the dogs, cuddle the cats or help with any duties at the retreat. Almost nothing else on earth feels as good as making a difference in the lives of those that offer unconditional love in return. As an individual or small family, you can make your difference any day between 9am and 5pm by freely walking in. Larger groups should preferably make an appointment first. On a more sustained level, fostering is a great way to help an animal without making a lifetime commitment, as Paws looks for temporary homes for cats and dogs. Adoption is the top tier commitment for those who want to make a permanent difference. • COVER STORY IN SINK WITH MOTHER EARTH Geology fans and people with a proclivity for natural phenomena landmarks take note. We figured it’s time for you to uncover your inner Indiana Jones and discover somewhere very special. Musfur Sinkhole is an evocative ecosystem that should be on your radar to explore. Heading out from Doha on Salwa Road, you take Exit 35 for about 10km and continue on a dirt track for another 12km until you encounter this ancient sinkhole. Formed in a time before the smartphone – 325,000 to 500,000 years ago to be precise – the cavity recess is about 12 metres wide and plummets to a cavernous depth of 92 metres, making it the largest sinkhole in Qatar. Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, which is naturally dissolved by groundwater circulating through it. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground causing most of the sinkholes in the Arabian region. It’s important to note that due to the nature of their formation, sinkholes are not guaranteed to be safe, so all visits are taken at your own risk. GO: Just enter ‘Musfur Sinkhole’ into your Google maps and off you go.

IS IT A BIKE? IS IT A PLANE? Imagine owning the skies for a moment in time. We found an experience that fuels that emotion full on. A paratrike flight provides you with the unforgettable sense of majesty and freedom you’ve dreamed of. By far the lesser known of all the aerial sports in Qatar, paratriking is an exhilarating escape from down-to-earth everyday life. A paratrike is essentially a three-wheeled light vehicle supported by a large paragliding chute and powered forward by a motor to which the propeller is attached. On arrival at Sealine Beach, home of most paratrike operators, you begin with a short pre-flight briefing, then put on a set of in-flight headphones, strap safely into the back seat and get ready for take-off. A certified instructor will talk to you via the headset as you taxi the long stretch of beach and then gently lift off the ground. Flying is a controlled adrenaline experience that isn’t over in a flash like a parachute jump yet provides the same sense of freedom. The paratrike is an open structure, unrestrained by fuselage, windows or wings, where only the sky surrounds you. Leaving from Sealine Beach and flying low and slow is the 22

THE SNOWBALL EFFECT If you’re looking to chill this summer, we’ve got a secret tip for you. Qatar has its own answer to snow-capped peaks, deep white pistes, and ice-cold winter sports activity. Snow Dunes at Festival City Doha is a 9,500sq/m indoor park covered in wet-packed snow generated by 17 snow-machines in a minus four-degrees Celsius environment. It’s an exciting and unique winter wonderland in one of the hottest places on the planet. There are a dozen different attractions that cater to every age and active capability. You can go to Snow Dunes Park in your own warm gear, or you can hire snow-friendly attire on arrival. Talk about a warm reception. Among the attractions, Dune Dash is a 50-metre ride that’s all downhill and very, very fast, while Snow Storm is a dual racer thrill slide. Snow Slide is a slightly more subdued kid-friendly experience. You can also hike up Snowy Mount, meander through the snowy hillocks of White Dunes or snack at Snow Dunes Restaurant. If you’ve only just heard of Snow Dunes Park, it’s time to experience the snowball effect and make some white noise about it. GO: Visit https://www.snowdunes.qa/ for more information.

• COVER STORY EMBRACE CACAO MEDITATION AND SOUND THERAPY When we go undercover at FACT, we go deep; in this case the deep breathing and even deeper soulfulness incumbent in Cacao Meditation and Sound Therapy. This unusual and inspiring experience, hosted at a Villa in West Bay, invites people (currently in strictly limited numbers during Covid) to attend free-of-charge, and to try sound healing, meet others and share yummy food afterwards. You can reconnect to yourself while experiencing the health and spiritual benefits of pure 100% ceremonial cacao straight from the jungles of Guatemala. Among many wonderful health benefits, cacao boosts oxygen and blood flow throughout the body, which should help you feel both relaxed and focused during meditation. Evenings begin by sampling a cup of Ceremonial Grade Cacao followed by breathwork and meditation. Sound, in the form of hang drum, guitar and singing bowls, is one of the most important conduits to core meditation, and is an ‘instrumental’ part of any evening session. REVEALING AN OUGHT-TO-SEE AUTO SEA Call it an extreme way of reducing one's carbon footprint, or a grave way to see where automobiles spend their retirement, we’ve uncovered a haunting spectacle not far from Doha. Just outside Al Wukair is an eerie and compelling experience. On a lonely desert site lies an ocean of about 22,000 deserted and dilapidated cars. These abandoned autos – a combination of current rust buckets and former star performers of the street – now cover a one square kilometre expanse of the desert, as they rest in peace, and sometimes pieces. There are two separate lots: one for cars still to be claimed, and another where vehicles are salvaged for scrap. The amazing sight is not done proper justice by Google Maps. You need to be there to feel the atmosphere and absorb the truly massive scale of so many cars in varied stages of abandon, some still bearing traces of use by their former owners. GO: The site is located off Al Wukair Street. 24

NO TIME TO WASTE It’s no secret that the environment needs our help, and plastic waste on beaches is a good place to start. Plastics pollute the environment and contaminate the seas, killing sea life and degrading the ecosystem. What we’re uncovering is how much of a difference you can make simply by taking time one Friday to make a clean sweep of a beach near you. Recommencing this August with Friday sessions, Doha Environmental Actions Project (DEAP) gives you the chance to action change through a few hours of voluntary work. Founded in May 2017, DEAP is a volunteer organisation focused on beach clean ups as a way to lead the fight against plastic pollution in Qatar. DEAP has already organised 150 events with more than 9,000 volunteers collecting over 90,000kg of trash and is a completely non-profit organisation without funds. It is given the necessary clean-up supplies, including plastic trash bags, by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. GO: Follow @deapqatar on Facebook or Instagram for updates.

here are few joys greater in life than getting behind the wheel of a truly exceptional vehicle. Well, that’s how we motorcar enthusiasts feel anyway. When we at FACT found out we were to receive the keys to the 2021 Porsche Panamera, compliments of the outstanding team at Porsche Centre Doha, we knew we were in for a treat. However, having test-driven many exceptional Porsche models over the years, the bar had been set very high and were excited to find out how the new Panamera stacked up against them. As soon as the 2021 Panamera came into view it was obvious it has a sharper visual appearance and greater presence than ever before. The front end is now equipped with the previously optional Sport Design, complete with distinctive air intake grilles, large side cooling openings and an adapted single-bar front light layout. Additionally, the modules of the dual front lights are now set much further apart. At the sides, the powerful yet sleek lines of the new Panamera flow effortlessly from front to back with the 21-inch wheels, available in 10 different designs, adding to the robust stance of the vehicle. The side-sills and rear spoiler lip are finished in the exterior colour, creating a distinctive contrast against the high gloss black finish of the front air intakes. The rear light strip has been revamped and now runs seamlessly over the luggage compartment lid with an adapted contour, gracefully linking the two newly designed LED tail light clusters to create a

As we slipped inside the cabin of the new Panamera, we were greeted by loads of space as well as the supportive, eight-way adjustable comfort seats that can be easily adapted to the needs of the driver and front passenger. The overall feel of the interior is one of ambience, with all materials, trimmings and finishes being of the highest quality. The optional panoramic sunroof adds to the already spacious feel of this luxury sedan as does the ample head, shoulder and leg room available throughout. The luggage compartment can hold 495 litres, a total that increases to 1,334 litres with the rear seats folded down. The new Panamera is now equipped with sports type C USB ports as standard and can be used to charge compatible devices with a power of up to 15 watts. The cockpit has been ergonomically orientated towards the driver, giving it a genuine sports car feel. The new multifunction sports steering wheel feels great in hand and comes complete with shift paddles and a rim finished in smooth leather. The driver is offered almost unlimited assistance by the Porsche Communication Management System (PCM) which incorporates new digital functions and services, including Voice Pilot online voice control, Risk Radar, Radio Plus or wireless Apple CarPlay. The range of Porsche Connect services has now been extended to include a multitude of assistance features especially designed to ensure your driving experience is as easy and impressive as is possible. Once out on the roads, we had the privilege of experiencing what this remarkable vehicle has to offer under the bonnet. Our Panamera houses an impressive V6 biturbo engine complete with petrol particulate filter. It has a maximum power output of 243kW at 5,400 – 6,400rpm and a maximum torque of 450Nm at 1,800 – 5,000rpm. This translates to an acceleration of 0–100km/h in around 5.5 seconds and believe us when we tell you that this motorcar can move! Boasting a steel suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), this car effortlessly absorbs the bumps of any and all terrain it encounters and ensures one comfy ride for all occupants. With a premium braking system, great traction control and exceptional manoeuvrability, we enjoyed every moment of our new Panamera experience and spent as much time as we could putting it through its paces. The expert designers at Porsche have made sure to incorporate a wide array of safety features to ensure you and your loved always arrive safely at your chosen destination. These include: Lane Keeping Assist including road sign recognition; Adaptive Cruise Control; Night Vision Assist; Lane Change Assist; Park Assist including Surround View; Head-up Display; multiple airbags and so much more. All-in-all we found the new Panamera to be a great inclusion to Porsche’s legacy and we highly recommend that anyone looking to purchase an aesthetically pleasing, technologically advanced, performance orientated and practical vehicle gives it a try. ✤

DEFINING FUN DRIVING Unveiling the 296 GTB, Ferrari’s new mid-rear-engined Berlinetta sports car.

The 296 GTB, the latest evolution of Maranello’s mid-rearengined, two-seater Berlinetta, was premiered during an online event broadcast on Ferrari’s social media and web channels. The vehicle redefines the whole concept of fun behind the wheel, guaranteeing pure emotion not just when pushing the car to its limits, but also in day-to-day driving situations. The 296 GTB ushers in an authentic revolution for Ferrari as it introduces a new engine type to flank the marque’s multi-awardwinning eight- and 12-cylinder power units. A new 663cv 120° V6 coupled with an electric motor capable of delivering a further 122kW (167cv). This is the first six-cylinder engine installed on a road car sporting the Prancing Horse badge. It unleashes its massive 830cv total power output to deliver previously unthinkable performance levels and an innovative, exhilarating and unique soundtrack. The 296 GTB’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system guarantees it is an incredibly usable car as well as cutting pedal response times to zero and delivering a 25km range in all-electric eDrive mode. Its sporty, sinuous design and extremely compact dimensions also visually underscore its exceptional modernity, brilliantly referencing the likes of the 1963 250 LM, the perfect marriage of simplicity and functionality. 30

APP-LICIOUS What’s on the smartphone agenda for July?

Voilà AI Artist Have you ever wondered what you’d look like as a Disney character? Or perhaps your kids are obsessed with a particular franchise and would love to resemble their heroes? Well, the wait is over. A new app called Voilà AI Artist that allows you to transform into a super-cute, cartoon version of yourself has arrived and you simply can’t miss it with users posting their ‘Disney’ pics all over social media. Boredpanda.com even did a feature in which celebrities and historical figures were given the treatment and it’s great fun to see. The app uses artificial intelligence to create these 3D-looking cartoon characters. It did a great job, and we love it. And, if your taste doesn’t run to Disneylike cuteness, you can also turn your photos into stunning pieces of art such as Renaissance paintings or hand-drawn caricatures using a combination of human creativity and Artificial Intelligence. Take some time out during the summer holidays to engage in this with the kids or maybe even set up a family competition to see who can come up with the best image.

Car Summer Games 2021 For those of you who are lucky enough to be travelling this summer, this is ideal for keeping kids (and adults too) happy on long journeys. And don’t be fooled by the name. This is not something to be played in cars, though, of course, you can. No, this is something much whackier. Imagine your favourite sporting events… with cars! Hurdle run with cars? Long jump with cars? Even hammer throw with cars? Yup, all of that is possible. Features: ● Take part in multiple sport types… in a car! ● Beat your high scores and advance in the ranks ● Unlock new cool cars for your progress ● Buy awesome upgrades and become even better With nearly a dozen cars to choose from and half a dozen awesome events (with more coming in future updates!) the game offers a wide variety of challenges. This is the fun car experience you’ve been waiting for and you can even play it on a plane.

In Conversation with… Sean R Spinks General Manager Centara West Bay Hotel & Residences Doha

What first sparked your interest in joining the hospitality field and who have been your inspirations or mentors? Sawasdee krab (Thai greeting) A summer vacation job as porter at The Royal Albion Hotel, Broadstairs, Kent, England, ignited my passion for hotels and hospitality at the tender age of 14. After graduating in Hotel Management, I then travelled extensively through Southeast Asia, where my passion for Asian cuisine, culture and the hospitality scene developed. My career started at the innovative restaurant group 1 9 9 7. Whilst in Hong Kong, I met mentor and creative restauranteur Paul Hsu, of Elite Concepts fame… who engaged me to set up the first Elite Concepts venture in Indonesia. My Food & Beverage (F&B) background has led to high-profile roles across many continents such as Executive Assistant Manager in South Korea and Director of Operations in Canada. As well as Corporate Director for hotel pre-openings, Asset Management and General Manager roles in Qatar and Africa. During my tenure in Dubai, I was fortunate to work with the inspirational and visionary Anthony Liddiard, who had a major influence on my workstyle, enhanced my creativity and shared his vast knowledge. He remains a mentor and friend today. 34

What have been the greatest challenges in guiding such a large property as Centara West Bay through the pandemic and how have you overcome them? Centara Hotels, being a Thai brand, first responded to the pandemic in January 2020. At Centara West Bay we also followed all company trainings and protocols for Covid-19; by the end of January, we had conducted the hotel’s first internal Covid-19 training and set new levels of wellbeing and safety for guests throughout the property. A strategic decision was made to increase our long-stay base to compensate for other decreasing segments coupled with a cost saving plan. We partnered with local delivery apps to promote all food and beverage offerings to develop new revenue channels, and we started hotel drivethru, pickup, delivery and takeaway. We also transformed an underutilised area into a ladies’ salon and an underperforming area of the lobby into a modern Lebanese resto-lounge – The Mezze House – to support business growth through a time of change for the hospitality business. Team members were set clear goals that were reviewed periodically and amended when needed. We are most proud to have retained all full-time employees throughout the pandemic and successfully delivered outstanding guest service and financial results. You have previously mentioned your excitement at taking on an area role in Centara’s expansion in Doha, what will this entail? An expansion plan has been in place for the past two years, which has developed key talent to support both the growth of Centara and retain our position as a preferred employer; this now has translated into being a hotel brand of choice for owners. Qatar expansion for Centara Hotels and Resorts will encompass six distinct brands making their debut

over the next five years: COSI affordable lifestyle, modern hangout hotels appealing to the digital generation; the value-driven midscale brand Centra by Centara; the curated and stylish leisure brand Centara Boutique Collection; the distinguished upper upscale Centara Grand; and the Iconic, new luxury hotel brand Centara Reserve. In terms of food and beverage, Centara will showcase innovative and authentic signature brands; Thai Suan Bua, Japanese Hagi, Spanish UNO MAS and Coast, the international beach club and bistro concept. World renowned bars, including rooftop destinations Red Sky and Blue Sky, will also feature within the new properties. Centara is one of Asia’s leading spa operators and the award-winning SPA Cenvaree brand will make its Qatar debut early next year. Do you have family with you in Doha, how do you spend your free time? I consider myself the luckiest man alive to be the proud father of two amazingly talented wonderful girls, Sofia and Summer, and married to French-Canadian photographer and artist Melissa Rouzier. Free time includes spending as much time as possible together with trips to the wonderful beaches and parks of Qatar. Due to the pandemic restrictions, we have not been able to go ice-skating or to the cinema recently. However, movie night at home with homemade glutenfree pizza is now a firm favourite for the entire family.

Our home is very musical, Sofia, Summer and Melissa play the piano, sing and are also learning the guitar; recently they purchased me a drum kit which is a work in progress. Living in West Bay we are looking forward to the completion of West Bay North Beach development later this year which will transform the entire area into a unique leisure destination. Post summer, I will be back on my mountain bike enjoying early morning rides in the amazing desert locations of Qatar. If you were not a hotelier, what other career might you have chosen? It is difficult to comprehend not being in the hospitality business, every day is so different with new opportunities, interactions, and innovations that keep my focus firmly in the role I am passionate about. Being a hotelier for me is a way of life. My career has given me the opportunity to visit, live and work in so many wonderful countries, experience new cultures, cuisines, music, customs; I have so many fond memories from everywhere I visited, and met friends from all over the world. Being naturally creative with a talent for drawing, I enjoy the design phase of hotels, restaurants and bars and look up to many interior designers. Would I have chosen to be an interior designer or architect? I am not sure… If I had chosen that path, it would have still been linked to hospitality in the end! ✤ fact magazine

SOLACE IN WONDERLAND Embracing a Mondrian State of Mind 36

L

ast month in this feature article we continued our journey through the looking glass exploring the architectural curiosities and signature design language of the Mondrian Doha. The experience got curiouser and curiouser when we uncovered a heady mixture of bold ambition, detailed opulence and eccentric whimsy in the external architecture and internal artistry evident in the feature designs of this hotel. In this edition, Lindsey Steenkamp dips her toe in the waters of personal pampering and luxurious rejuvenation as she samples the undisputable delights of the ESPA Spa and Fitness Centre at Mondrian. Mondrian’s ESPA Spa is no ordinary experience, let’s be clear about that. The commitment to fully immersive treatment – the kind that truly takes you away from the strains and stresses of everyday life for a few hours – reveals itself right away. Mondrian’s signature spa is the first ESPA facility in the Middle East and the largest of its kind in the world. As we know from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, scale is everything, and in this case, bigger is better. All 2,000sq/m of relaxation and holistic care make the space a world of its own, removed from any hustle and bustle. The spa is comprised of 12 spacious treatment rooms, each with its own character and raison d'etre. While the spa is clearly part of the established ESPA international franchise, renowned for its integration of advanced technology and organic materials in the rendering of spa treatments, at Mondrian Doha there is a distinctive and delightful deference to Arabic culture and Qatari heritage, which is unmistakeably evident throughout the aesthetic. The spa is genuinely breathtaking in its beauty. With the unique sense of feeling like an Arabian Princess, at least for a few hours, I enter this wonderland ready to submit to its soothing treatments and personalised pampering. As I walk in to start my treatment sessions, strains of whimsical music resonate from the pristine walls and floor spaces. It feels dreamlike and incredibly relaxing, as if I’m entering the inner sanctum of a safe space. I certainly welcome that sense of sanctuary.

I take a few moments in the pre-treatment relaxation room with its pearly-white couches. Rose-golden floor tapestry and gold-leafstyle collages on the chairs and walls. The pearl idiom comes full circle via a giant bead-chain of pearls form a dome in the centre of the room. I recline on one of the concentric couches under the dome contemplating the day ahead. Phase one of my journey through wonderland is the Finnish Sauna. With its ultra-stylish Scandinavian, wood-panelled walls, the dry heat of the sauna opens the skin pores for some serious cleansing. To refresh after the sauna I head to the shower; in this case a supreme version of one. Shimmering mosaic-tiled walls surround me as I step into a Swarovski crystal rain shower. Standing below the full body jets encircled by crystals feels like bathing under the world’s most opulent waterfall. This surreal iteration of a daily ritual is pure glamour and I love the sensation. The shower area includes iconic hanging egg chairs, essentially hammockstyle suspended basket seats. It all adds to the uniqueness of fact magazine

the design language. The Finnish Sauna and Swarovski crystal showers are integral parts of a multi-level heat experience ‘secret garden’ that should be experienced first-hand to do it justice. The facility has heated floors throughout. In the post-treatment relaxation room, the nod to nomadic Bedouin tents is evident as billowing white sheets weaved into a delicate architectural feature emerge from the ceiling and walls, creating an intimate ambience laced with the alluring mystique of the Middle East. With five treatment rooms and a VIP treatment suite, the female spa emits feminine energy through its look and feel. The spa’s services run the gamut from immersive pampering massages and facials that employ LED lights, to scrubs using locally grown dates. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to try everything. Being pampered takes time and, on this occasion, I need more of it. I’ve got a sole-soothing, nail-enhancing appointment to keep in the spa at the dedicated manicure and pedicure stations serviced by London-based beautician Margaret Dabbs. I enjoy every moment of this experience. The therapists are friendly and confident but fully respectful of one’s personal space and very professional in their rendering of treatment. I enjoy my chat with the nail technician, Aizhamal, as I sit in pampering nirvana. She helps me relax and goes the extra mile in making sure my nails are perfect for the upcoming FACT Dining Awards. Attention to detail and genuine warmth are the lasting impressions I get from this session. After I nail the manicure and pedicure treatment, there’s a brief interlude to review the fitness centre, a tech-infused 38

workout station that includes personalised audio options on the treadmills. The centre’s gym offers expert personal trainers as well as uplifting panoramic views of West Bay Before my journey through wonderland concludes, I spend time at the atrium pool area beneath the ornate stained-glass dome. With a maximum depth of 1.5 metres, this is purely a relaxation pool, so you won’t better your Olympic qualifying times here. The pool is fashioned in the shape of ‘60s-style sunglasses pure whimsy that’s hard to resist. With customised treatments for pregnant women and nursing mothers, the spa leaves no stone unturned in its quest to deliver a fully inclusive experience. There is also a matching and equally luxurious men’s spa section at Mondrian, providing complete comfort and comprehensive services across four treatment rooms, a VIP treatment suite, wet and dry steam rooms as well as showers and heated daybeds. Décor embraces the ancient Arab souk aesthetic. My time at ESPA Spa and Fitness Centre at Mondrian was a much-needed break from the intensity of city life. There's so much to enjoy that I would definitely want to stay longer than just a few hours. Next time I plan to simply get lost here. This wasn’t an adventure exactly like Alice’s in the classic Lewis Carrol novel, because, despite the pure escapism of the experience, more than anything it provided the sense of peace, harmony and rejuvenation I was craving. I would call it solace in wonderland. ✤ GO: CALL 4045 5550.

The Man Behind The Mondrian Lindsey Steenkamp met with Vasileios Oikonomopoulus, General Manager of Mondrian Doha, to discuss the inspirations, innovations, and insights behind his successful career and the evolution of the Mondrian brand experience in the local market under his stewardship.

A

s lockdown eases in Qatar, and we enter the dawn of the revitalisation of Qatar’s hospitality industry, I wanted to get to know a little more about what makes Mondrian’s new chief tick. I start with a little background history of Vasileios and how his journey led him to the business of managing a unique destination hotel like Mondrian Doha. He details the backstory of his 20-year career in hospitality, revealing that the journey initially was beyond his study ambit. “I joined due to a passion for service. I love being of service,” he says. “I fell in love with the product. Coming from a bar, beverage and nightlife background, I always felt at home with the management of people – teams and guests. Then this passion progressed to project management. I became adept at adding value to the owners of the brand and the people who use it.” Vasileios tells us that during his career spanning many countries, he has been blessed to work with many good people all over the world. As this conversation thread unfolds, I want to know which country offered him the most interesting or valuable experience. He starts by listing a few of the countries he has worked in such as Morocco, France, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, China and now Qatar, and then diplomatically adds: “Each country infuses one with an understanding of people and cultures, and that’s what I value.” His holistic ethos emerges as he continues: “I see myself as a curator of experiences, and that requires a measure of maturity, humanity and nuance. I often reinvent myself, keeping an open ear and open mind and, above all, staying humble, so that I’m always open to fresh insight. “ With a clearer understanding of the journey, I ask what intrigued and lured him toward the Mondrian brand. He immediately mentions both the attitude of the brand and its signature style. I see the match-up here with his assured and open-minded approach. “I like the improvisational quality of my colleagues and the confidence that the brand invests in me, where I can be myself and they trust me with that. There is no rigid rule making,” adds fact magazine

Vasileios. “One needs confidence to deal with guests across the spectrum. Our team is a small tribe of people who are dynamite and, due to this diversity and freedom of self-expression, we apply the same principle to guests; for example, never defining them by the suits they wear.” I’m intrigued about his vision for the iconic hotel. “I’m new here and must make sure to bring value to my owners and the guests. Mondrian is unique and has set new standards for the brand and the industry in the Middle East. “With diversification of the guest profile and the rise of Middle Eastern hospitality, the hotel must constantly reinvent itself through new offerings that satisfy changing clientele in an evolving market. We have significant milestones ahead like the World Cup 2022 and we need to be mindful of the bigger picture for Qatar.” I ask him how he would best describe his leadership style. In response he is self-effacing and frank. “It feels overwhelming to have that leadership title in the question. It’s too big a name. I would say it’s a working style. We have many leaders in the hotel – each person has a leadership role or is a leader in their own right. How we collaborate is very important. I work at a very energetic pace; I speak and engage in discussion often and at any point in each day. I’m naturally drawn to people and constantly talk to them. People, I think, feel at ease talking to me, so I like to create a vibe where everyone feels comfortable to shine in front of me.” This inclusive style leads me to asking him to share a piece of wisdom he has learned as a GM that one can apply to ordinary life. He fires back with a nuanced and thoughtful reply: “There is 40

a mantra I live by. I’m really not sure if life taught me this about hospitality or if hospitality taught me this about life but it’s this: [you need] the capacity to catch the heart of a person or situation and to rise above and see the bigger picture. If you can do that with life and at work, you’re good. We deal with hundreds of people daily. Understanding the well-being of people and seeing the bigger picture is very important. So, it’s a balanced mixture of micro insights and macro vision.” I ask Vasileios his thoughts on the spa and fitness facilities at Mondrian Doha, something I have recently experienced. “I believe our spa offering here is unparalleled” he says. “I have worked in several hotels across multiple continents that offer this component, but the combination of partnering with a very prestigious international brand together with the hardware that we have is unique. Considering the equally spectacular male and female sections, the design and organisation of the experiences is sublime. If you add on a feature like the Turkish bath and the

serious note, he references a quote from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey as his current favourite: ‘Make every detail perfect and limit the number of details to perfect’. He adds: “I'm a firm believer that less is more. Perfectionism is one of my traits, but it is essential to be able to dilute that into realism and marry both. From one side we need to push ourselves for our colleagues, our guests and our brand, but we also need to find ways to accommodate differences in pace and expectations of others.” With this combination of warmth, passion and balanced leadership, it’s clear that Mondrian Doha is in good hands going forward. ✤

pre- and post-treatment areas, then we have a real value offering. It’s about mental and physical wellness for all our guests.” Asked if he ever uses the facility, “I’m very spartan myself,” he laughs. “I enjoy the occasional sports massage and we have a highly capable specialist to render that brilliantly”. Time has flown and our chat is, unfortunately, drawing to a close. I ask Vasileios if he has a favourite quotation. He tells me he has several but that they frequently change. Right now, there is a sign on his office door quoting Don Corleone from The Godfather that reads ‘Bring me my coffee and nobody gets hurt’. On a more

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

What or who inspired you to become a chef? In my early days, at the age of 12, watching as my grandmother cooked made me want to join her. I liked the delicious dishes she created. When I was 13 years old, school was closed for summer vacation and only my younger brother and sister were at home one day. They were very hungry, I tried to cook for them, and they liked my food very much. Since then, they always wanted me cook for them. After graduating from high school, my uncle knew that I like cooking and he encouraged me go to culinary school to learn more. When I started my first kitchen job, I had the opportunity to work with one of Hong Kong’s famous chefs, Cai Ziwei, his passion and skills in cooking enriched my food knowledge and inspired me to begin my kitchen career. So, if I had to name a few people that inspired me, it would be my grandmother, my brother and sister and my uncle, along with Chef Cai Ziwei. Chinese is the cuisine you’re most known for, but do you cook other dishes when you not working? At home, I like to try cooking some Italian foods like pizza and pasta and Thai foods such Tom Yum Goong and Pad Thai.

How do you like to spend your free time – is it all about food or do you have hobbies that you enjoy? My hobby is to watch cooking channels to see chefs from different countries. I really like watching the cooking methods of other chefs. I have learned new skills from those cooking channels, and sometimes it may inspire me to create my own new recipes. And I also spend my free time on reading and sports... What is your signature dish and why? Please tell us about the development of the dish and what makes it so special, both to you and to your customers. My signature dish is Stir-fried Prawns and vegetables with XO mushroom sauce. Why? Because XO sauce is a very special component in Cantonese cuisine. The traditional XO sauce ingredients are meat and mixed seafood. XO mushroom sauce is a new recipe created by me. It only uses mixed mushrooms, not mixed with meat and seafood. The signature dish is made of fresh prawns and XO mushroom sauce, the two foods complement each other, and the taste is very delicious. The XO mushroom sauce can be cooked with many foods, and it is also a favourite sauce for vegetarians. ✤ fact magazine

T

he word mosaic describes a surface decoration made by inlaying small pieces of variously coloured material to form pictures or patterns. Mosaic at Mandarin Oriental, Doha applies this creative principle to a destination dining experience. True to its name, this unique restaurant represents a collage of flavours and cultures as it integrates authentic tastes from nine open stations serving classic dishes from around the world. As Aristotle once said: "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts". This is particularly true for this food review. While each part of the Mosaic dining experience has its own charm, it is the overall experience that gives the restaurant its character. The speciality stations and their creations serve as chapters in the Silk Road story that lies at the centre of the Mosaic experience. I can choose from Japanese sushi and sashimi, dishes from the Arabic grill, Asian wok creations, rotisserie treats, and meals fresh from the tandoori oven. Add to this the unique flavours from the Yakitori and charcoal grill, traditional bread oven taste sensations, irresistibly delightful dessert choices, as well as light refreshments from the Juice and Smoothie Counter and I’ve got a veritable world of options waiting for me. The conceptual approach to Mosaic captures the titular spirit – to sample and share – as a couple or as a group, from among the many elements and options. In the words of Sophia, one of the hosts at Mosaic: “There's such a lovely variety that everyone will be happy. So, if you come with your friends no

one will be marginalised or not find what they love. There’s something for everybody.” Never one to decline a culinary challenge, I deicide to test that claim by sampling a wide variety of options at Mosaic. The journey begins with a taste of the Mediterranean courtesy of the Caesar Salad. I discover some interesting flavours in the gem lettuce mix. The cold prawn is understated and appealing, not overwhelming in its piscatorial aroma. I find myself delighting in the crunchiness of the caramelised pecan nuts while the Parmesan cheese adds a delicious saltiness in contrast to the sweet nuttiness. The signature dressing is lovely. It’s fair to say that I’m somewhat of a soup snob, so it’s not easy to impress me on that front. Mosaic does. The Cream of Mushroom Soup with sautéed wild mushrooms and truffle oil is absolutely amazing. The long and crispy dippable herb croutons only add to the indulgence. I really enjoy the Prawn and Shrimp Tempura sample as a starter. The tempura is wonderfully fresh, particularly crispy on the outside and succulently juicy on the inside. I start my mains expedition with Chicken Tikka Masala. The dish is presented in an ornate brass bowl. The rice is infused inside the steam bowl capturing every aromatic nuance. Incredible flavour sensations erupt as I savour the marinated chargrilled chicken in its spicy tomato curry sauce. My next mains foray is a dish called Kaeng Kung which consists of tiger prawns in a pineapple curry with lime coconut and lemongrass. The flavour of the prawns is superb. Last on my mains voyage is a mix of lamb kofta, prawn, beef and lamb kebabs, and garlic aioli in the Arabic Mixed Grill. Variety is the spice of life with its inclusion of a Mini Shish Taouk, but I can’t try too much as I still aim to do justice to the dessert dishes. The final decadent chapter starts with Bourbon Vanilla Cheesecake, a flavour-filled burst of taste with wild berries and raspberry sorbet. Next up is a decorative storm of milk chocolate whipped ganache, caramelised pecan nuts, chocolate shards and vanilla gelato that constitute the Chocolate Brownie Dessert. Generally I don’t like anything too sweet, so I’m cautious. To my delight, the chocolate shards are light and subtle, while the plain gelato offsets the sweetness of the brownie perfectly. For anyone with a particularly sweet tooth, I recommend the Local Dates Pudding; cracked wheat cooked in a local date syrup, light caramel sauce and vanilla gelato. The open cooking stations at Mosaic make the experience classy, elegant and intimate despite all the international personnel cooking up a storm. Each station is staffed by experts from that cuisine’s region of origin who specialise in creating authentic dishes. This attention to detail and quest for perfection permeates across my interactions with the team at Mosaic. Every staff member is attentive and passionate about their work. I can sense the care that's been taken across all touchpoints. Located near the top of Mandarin Oriental, Doha, Mosaic features indoor seating and an outdoor terrace with panoramic views of West Bay. The décor is modern with an infusion of local materials. While it offers all the requisite privacy, it also embraces a sense

of sharing. At Mosaic the lightness and openness create intimacy and connectivity simultaneously. Like a tile in a beautiful collage, guests are part of a bigger picture – a story of shared culture. ✤

AN ANDALUSIAN ADVENTURE

M

y burning question on arriving at Bibo was why hadn’t I been before? It opened in January 2020. Well, the truth is that, because of the pandemic, they were forced to close twice so it is with great relief that their doors have reopened and the chef is back in the kitchen. BiBo Dani Garcia started in Spain and, so far, the Qatar iteration is the first in another country, so we should feel rightly honoured. The restaurant is run under the careful eye of Spanish-Filipino Chef Santiago Guerrero, who has a long association with Chef Dani Garcia going back as far as 2012 when he was opening head chef for the latter’s Manzanilla Spanish Brasserie in New York, which was awarded Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide in its first year. Having received a First Class BSC (honours) in Culinary Arts Management, during his 20 years in the kitchen Chef Santiago has garnered multiple awards and worked alongside Michelin-starred chefs all over the world. The most famous of the BiBo restaurants in Spain is bright and the design is louder; here they’ve kept the modern décor but toned down the lighting, so it feels more intimate, stripped back and rather sexy too. Situated in the Al Gassar Resort opposite St. Regis, where the old ballroom complex used to be, BiBo is a large restaurant divided up with booths for groups, side tables for couples and high tables for casual drinks too. The bar in the middle looks like a park bandstand and there are tall metal archways skirting the edge of the room. We found ourselves sitting underneath one such arch. Hidden away at the back are the most spacious private party rooms I can recall anywhere, so this is a place with options and a place for all manner of occasions. In a word, the theme is Spanish although it deserves a few more words. Andalusianinspired with other flavours from Greater Spain and the Hispanic world probably better explain the menu. It’s not strictly tapas but the sharing mentality is the way to go. A trolley arrived shortly after we sat down and our waiter, Borja, started plating up freshly made guacamole with nachos and it was unique and distinctive. Different from a Mexican guac but unique in that its ingredients included burrata, edamame and mint. It’s one of their best sellers and some people go there and just chomp on that all night. Luckily, they took it away from us so we could focus on other light starters like the

striped bass ceviche, which had a crunchy texture from finely chopped green apples and jalapenos and was lighter and less acidic than your usual ceviche due to less sauce. They like burrata cheese here, and we had it with confit cherries on top as well as orange wedges. We then tried what is one of their tastiest and most popular offerings globally. Oxtail brioche doesn’t just sound good on paper, it tastes great in the mouth. Presented on a platter with their signature B’ bull sauce, the top slice of brioche is upside down. The waiter invited us to flip it over so that the sauce would drip across the pulled oxtail and then no other instructions precluded us from eating it in one bite. Seafood is in abundance at BiBo. The squid ink croquettes are another example of popping something in the mouth in one and letting the flavours do the rest. The Tempura prawns were good, ably aided by the impressive in-house spicy sauce. The classic marinated sea bass came on a long board with Andalusian adobo taking up the whole table and you could pick up the pieces like the fanciest fish fingers you’ve ever seen. The food here is definitely fine-dining quality, but the way you eat it is pleasantly informal. Two highlights for us were the slow-cooked beef ribs which took three days to cook! We could taste virtually every minute of that loving attention. And the grilled octopus, of which there was a lot, came in a bowl of black rice and roast garlic alioli. Both were of the highest quality and utterly delicious. Instagram addicts won’t struggle to find plenty to snap. Presentation is on a par with the cooking. The dessert was a real performance with our waiter bringing a trolley bearing what looked like a school chemistry experiment but resulted in salted caramel ice cream. Three-Michelin-starred Chef Partner, Dani Garcia, is credited as one of the world’s first chefs to use liquid nitrogen in restaurant cooking and uses it at -195 degrees to help quickly freeze the ice cream while whisking it table side. This allows the creation of a freshly churned ice cream that’s extra creamy as the ice crystal formation is very small since the mixture freezes in less than two minutes, leaving a velvety smooth texture. This restaurant is worth several visits as there is so much to enjoy. BiBo is back and I will be too! ✤

here is nothing more rewarding than stumbling upon a wonderful café as you leave work on a Thursday afternoon. Yet that’s exactly what happened when my friend and I decided to have an evening catch-up with bites and coffees at Vortex Coffee. Located on the ground floor of the Tornado Tower, right in the heart of West Bay, we had heard about the place for its classic coffees and brilliantly prepared breakfast. Yes, I am one of those people, I will have breakfast any time of the day. Vortex Coffee can be easily reached from its al fresco section, as it has a separate parking area, or through the main lobby of the Tornado Tower. Spacious, bright and airy, the ambiance is conducive for an intimate tête-à-tête, and casual or business meet ups. My first thought was, I will definitely remember this place when I need to work with my laptop while I enjoy endless servings of coffee; surprisingly, even with the construction nearby, the indoor area was very quiet, literally noiseless. Meanwhile, gracefully adorned, the outdoor area is perfect for hanging out while you enjoy your hot or cold coffee. We were comfortably seated on elegant leather chairs, next to the intricately designed book shelves. As we went through the menu, the interiors gave an ‘old school library’ feel, with a fusion of modern decks and rustic ornaments. The menu selection is unpretentious and not excessive, that made me remember an article by a popular chef saying, a simple menu means that every dish will be impeccably palatable as you can expect it was masterfully crafted with time and devotion.

red, yellow and green peppers. This tasted so satisfying, I would certainly go back for this dish alone. Though we were extremely contented, my prying eyes looked at the selections of coffees being made at the counter as the aroma filled the air. We had Flat White and Caramel Macchiatto to go with our dessert, a creamy sundae with chocolate frostings topped with hazelnut. As we dug into the cream, we loved what we tasted, a dessert that isn’t overly sweet but just enough to tease the palate and complete our similarly well-concocted coffees. Just what we needed for a perfect finish. Vortex Coffee demonstrates that beauty lies in simplicity and happiness is simple. From the ambiance and the service to the traditionally cultured coffees and flavoursome dishes, it is evident that passion is the main ingredient. It is truly worthy of another visit, once, twice, or even every day. ✤

That remained true with every dish we ordered. First to come, the French toast – a gypsy brown bread toast, served sweet with a distinctive mix of milk, sugar and vanilla, and then topped with maple syrup for the perfect finish. Then I chose another breakfast item, the cheese omelette, which reminded me of my childhood. Served with toasted white bread, green vegetables and topped with basil and parmesan, this omelette is heaven on earth for cheese lovers like me. The melted cheese texture is so consistent, and you feel the flavour in every bite. Served in freshly made ciabatta bread is a chicken avocado sandwich, which is next to arrive on our table. The essences of chicken and avocado are perfectly blended, and when complemented with some veggies and mayonnaise it is a revelation! Not surprisingly, we were told that this was also a crowd favourite and the most ordered item on the menu. It was so amazingly delicious, I had to order another to take home to my son. Spaghetti Bolognese arrived next and, again, it reminded me of how I enjoyed having spaghetti as a favourite dish growing up. The pasta perfectly done, topped with rich Bolognese sauce with the right mix of sweetness, beef and spices. Something I often crave for my lunch break but is hard to find is rice and chicken in one meal. So, we also ordered the chicken combo, which is chicken with cream sauce served with rice and a versatile ensemble of fact magazine

Invest in Yourself (and your family)

Be SMART!

GM Matthijs Alexander Bos It all starts with realising that a club membership is not an expense, but rather an investment in physical and mental well-being. Especially because we have been stuck at home for months now, you should be mindful of the welfare of your body and mind more than ever. It’s the best time to invest in the upkeep of yourself. To be an active gym member is ultimately cheaper than having to go through physiotherapy. A little-known fact is that people get injured because they ‘go at it alone’, overdo it after being inactive for a long time or workout at compound gyms with unqualified freelancers. It is undoubtedly more beneficial to be able to talk to and be guided by educated and experienced instructors in a professional environment. Anybody’s fitness journey throughout their life will be influenced by various factors inherent to life itself, such as age and medical history. Interests or physical abilities may change, therefore diversity in club services is key to an efficient workout. Plenty of members at Gymmito have moved from regular fitness to martial arts or taken on functional training at The Den. Parenthood can be a culprit causing fitness decline as lack of time and energy are common among parents. At Gymmito, parents can drop their children at our gymnastics facility and pop into the gym for a workout. My advice – look at your situation, find your fitness niche and invest in yourself!

Fitness Manager Colin Fraser Whether your fitness goals are short- or long-term, you should use SMART goal setting for the best outcome. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. This may sound like a cliché, but it is highly effective in, for instance, weight-loss management. When it comes to weightloss management, as a trainer I aim for 0.5 to 1kg per week, depending on circumstances. As a manager, I urge the Gymmito team to find a balance between providing top-notch, quality training while also keeping it fun. The fitness industry is about personalities. Each person has his or her own manual. No two clients are identical, so during our hiring process we specifically look at the personalities of the trainers, next to their qualifications and skillset. For example, Gymmito trainers Kris, Anita and Ahmed are completely different characters. Colin Fraser

Matthijs Alexander Bos

Take It Slowly Personal Trainer Kris Barr Be mindful when going back to the gym. It is wise to take a few steps back from where you left off. For instance, if you could run five times 10km per week but haven’t run in months, start at 5km and build yourself back up. Likewise, if you could bench press and deadlift 100kg, you should be sensible and pull the weight back. Go into the gym with a clear plan of what you’re doing that day and track your progress after each session. This will help you see your improvement numbers. Think about your meals too, fitness isn’t just pumping some weights. 74

Don’t waste your time! Spending 60 minutes at the gym training doesn’t work when you are on the phone half the time. Leave your phone in your locker! Don’t cancel more sessions than you show up for. Hiring a trainer isn’t the hard part; know that the heavy lifting can’t be done for you! Be prepared to work hard to achieve results, commit to yourself. Honestly, I am a nice guy but not a bubbly trainer, I expect punctuality and commitment.

Friend & Confidant! Personal Trainer Ahmed Jbili Personal training is my passion. As my client, you are my friend and I am your confidant, although sometimes you may dislike me for pushing you hard to discover your limits. Goals are important, but never forget comfort and fun, as your fitness journey should encompass all! Coming out of a lockdown, I’d say don’t rush things and keep it simple. If you’re a beginner, try to stick to the basics, don’t aspire to advanced exercises such as compound exercises and deadlift squats. My goal is to create consciousness and try to positively influence your lifestyle. Throughout our sessions, I will casually talk to you about nutrition and supplements. After all, exercise is not limited to, say, two or three hours of personal training per week. As we say at Gymmito: ‘fitness is a perpetual journey’. ✤ GO: CALL 4036 0678 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

For me, it is easy to energise myself, that’s why I chose to be a fitness professional. I have so much energy and am happy to share it with you. As a trainer, I always advise to diversify. That’s why I am all over Gymmito. You will see me in The Den, the studio or in the main gym leading a variety of classes. Positivity is key in training. If you find it difficult to locate that positivity within yourself, come to Gymmito. I will find it for you! estern males, like myself, may not be entirely accustomed to male-to-male spa treatments. It’s not a secret that guys can be skeptical about beauty treatments designed for men. I have always been reluctant, even though I have managed spas. At The Spa at Park Hyatt, this taboo has been broken for me. VITAMAN’s facial treatment by The Spa truly exceeded expectations. Before my treatment, I took time to work out in the well-equipped and cosy hotel gym. Weather permitting, you can also opt to chill at the designated relaxation area or take a dip in the pool. Facilities are what one expects from a business hotel, clean and tidy. Although not excessively large, the management clearly strives to provide excellence. The spa itself truly is a hidden gem that exudes quality. It is modern in design and no expenses were spared in furniture and fit-out. State-of-the-art massage beds, luxury in-room bathrooms and a rustic vibe, are key elements that complement a true spa experience. The spa boasts male and female areas on separate floor levels. At the reception I was approached and greeted by a warm and friendly hostess. An ever-so slight indication of a quality spa is when a hostess walks from behind the counter and approaches guests. It is understood that every spa experience starts at the reception. After being escorted to the appropriate floor, I was introduced to the therapist.

Rachid is a softly-spoken and friendly therapist, one of those unique spa professionals that radiates experience. You recognise a skilled therapist by their attention to physical detail. If fingers stop and detect a problem, like a knot, and they address the problem after the stroke sequence is finished, you know professional care is being given. What was meant to be light stretching turned into unknotting of my shoulders – exactly what the doctor ordered. Australia’s VITAMAN plant-derived products are applied in sequence during the facial treatment, but not before scrubbing and exfoliating (the process of removing dead skin cells). Once the mask was applied, all I had to do was lay back and enjoy tranquil melodies while Rachid stimulated blood flow by massaging my fingers, arms and upper body, using the right amount of pressure. A warm tingling feeling on the skin, due to eucalyptus and mint extracts, is a telltale sign of the mask at work. Once removed, toner is applied, which will revitalise skin and remove excess oil. It also has anti-bacterial and pH-balancing properties. As a finishing touch, non-greasy, fragrance-free moisturiser is applied, which distributes essential plant ingredients along the skin’s surface. Time passed by too quickly. My skin felt rejuvenated and I did feel truly relaxed. I have done quite a few couples’ massages as a romantic gesture but, to be honest, I thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility and serenity of complete privacy. The Spa at Park Hyatt offers the right environment for much needed me-time, secluded in the heart of town. The VITAMAN facial package includes gym and pool use and I’d recommend upgrading the package to 60 or 90 minutes and use as much time as possible at the gym and spa facilities. Get your money's worth and enjoy spa-hospitality at its finest. ✤

ocated on 3 million square metres of prime coastline in the tranquil southwest corner of Qatar, and less than 100km from Doha, the magnificent Salwa Beach Resort is a place where individuals, couples and families can escape to without the incumbent hassles of customs queues, baggage carousels and slightly dodgy taxi drivers. I drive for a manageable 90 minutes to transport myself from the cityscape of Doha to an island paradise, far removed from any urban pressures and stresses. On arrival I valet my car and begin a general guided tour with my host, Temitope. We take a golf cart ride around the perimeter of the resort to soak up the geography and expanse of the place. Spread out across 3.5km of picturesque private beaches, the resort is designed on a grand scale with an emphasis on space, beauty and luxury. As we head from South Bay towards the North Bay area, taking in the views, we pass the stylish Arabian Village where the secluded villas have a distinctive Arabic-inspired look and feel. Temi tells me there are various self-catering options at the resort from one- and two-bedroom apartments and duplexes, with their own courtyards, to these much larger two- and threebedroom luxury villas with outdoor swimming pools set among beautifully landscaped gardens. These ultra-stylish spaces serve as veritable homes from home, meaning one can occupy a private oasis with all the regular comforts and conveniences. It’s a beachside slice of perfection that people can book as a shortterm or long-term stay option. On our tour we stop a few times, firstly at the Marina. With its 56-berth capacity and white sands, it feels a little like a Caribbean bay. I’m also impressed with the Salwa Sports Academy. The football field looks fantastic and the beautiful indoor pool has a luxurious quality to it. fact magazine

Once the scouting tour is over, I check in at the main reception which is welcoming and friendly and uses a digital process to ensure safety in pandemic times. Before anything else, I feel the need to unwind, and head straight to the pool area on South Bay to take a swim, before reclining indulgently on a sun lounger. I have a chat with a fellow South African over lunch – the very friendly lifeguard manager Darren – who tells me how much he loves being at the resort. The aforementioned lunch is savoured at the South Bay restaurant and I try the confit duck leg salad with delicious mozzarella stick accoutrements. The salad comprises burnt coconut, charred pineapple and honey soy cashews. My meal is complemented by a cool zero cocktail of pineapple juice, watermelon juice, green apple syrup, lime and mint. The alcohol-free drink is fresh, light and ice cold, served in a hip brass pineapple cup. I picture myself lounging here for hours with festive music emanating from the pool bar area while sipping on sundowners, and with the beach only a brief walk away. I take a quiet walk alone on the beach before heading to my room to prepare for the evening. The accommodation is beautifully detailed with handcrafted furniture that feels modern yet simultaneously traditional. Leading from the king-sized bed, a natural wood door opens onto a magnificent en-suite bathroom with a beautiful bathtub backdropped by shimmering Arabic tiles in an arched frame. It feels as if I have my own private spa adjoining my bedroom. The elegantly subtle design of the room accommodates all the typical mod cons and amenities such as complimentary WiFi, mini bar and an espresso machine. I stand on my private terrace, contemplating the beach view. There are 246 deluxe rooms and suites at the Hilton property with these kinds of views. 84

Dinner that night turns out to be a treat. I eat at Dante Cucina Italiana, a restaurant with a beautiful modern interior that houses big neon light designs on a brick-face wall. My feast starts with a light and delightful offering of watermelon carpaccio, goats cheese mousse and Balsamic Caviar. It’s stylish but incredibly simple and refreshing. I then dive into a tantalising and flavourfilled Rocket and Burrata Salad that is dramatically presented as my host rolls me some of the signature steaming bread and cuts it at the table so I can fully appreciate its freshly-baked status. A pleasant surprise awaits as I delightedly try what, for me, is a first, the Ascolane Olives or as it reads on the menu, Cestino Di Olive Ascolane. I am an avid olive lover, so this truly moreish snack is a magnificent discovery. My hosts top off the evening with a decadent Torts Caprese (Italian Brownie). After a wonderfully restful night’s sleep, I awake refreshed by the soothing ocean air and head to breakfast at the Souk Kitchen, which delivers amazingly. Everything is incredibly fresh with a huge variety of options. Best of all, I have a spectacular ocean view while devouring my extensive international breakfast spread. I thoroughly enjoy the breakfast experience and feel fully satisfied and ready to take on a full day at the water park. A significant feature of Hilton Salwa Beach Resort is the Desert Falls Water and Adventure Park. One of the largest theme parks in the Middle East, when in full operation the park will feature 28 rides and attractions including multiple slides as well as surfing dunes, a torrent river ride and a lazy river experience. In addition, the park incorporates cliff jumping, diving and themed go karting. I meet my friend Jackie and her two little kids to experience the park from a child’s perspective. I find myself loving how most of it is built around and within a network of fabricated caves, so I don't have to be in the sun all the time. The Whizzard Mat Racer makes a big splash with me. I love the thrill of a heading down the slide face-first on a water mat. Guests can challenge a friend or a family member to compete in a face-off race, with the winner making it to the water first. The King Cobra themed ride is definitely the star of the show, though. This is an encapsulated twin-tube, adrenalin-filled ride that takes you to the mouth of a giant cobra. I also hear rave reviews of the Nimr Laser Tag experience but unfortunately, I don’t have time to try it on this visit. As the end of my spectacular, but sadly short, staycation approaches, I spend time at Nesma Lobby Lounge, a grand and constantly transforming space, to savour the High Tea experience, from a crafted afternoon tea menu with a Middle Eastern twist. A perfect treat to wrap up an ideal staycation. I depart Salwa Beach Resort and head back to the bright lights of the city, reflecting on how this staycation made me feel like I was out of Qatar, soaking up the sun on some Mediterranean island and basking in the escapist atmosphere of a different world. I definitely aim to return here to try out all the experiences I missed on my first visit, or to simply take a break from the fast-paced pressures of everyday life.

CALLIGRAPHY AS A CULTURAL CANVAS Rutba Rashid - young artist on the rise

ARTS & CULTURE •

R

utba Rashid is a young artist with a creative spirit that embraces Arabic tradition and heritage. The 23-year-old is rapidly becoming renowned for her calligraphy work, which she conveys on large canvasses. We caught up with this blossoming Arabic artist over lunch where she gave us some unique insights into the development of her artistic style covering some of her influences and inspirations on her journey. Rutba first developed a more serious interest in art when she moved to high school in 2008. At The International School of London, one of her majors was art which included abstract and fine art and even sculpture. At this stage however, she had yet to encounter the rich beauty of calligraphy. A visit to India had a profound effect on the artist. Rutba drew considerable inspiration from time spent at the iconic Taj Mahal landmark where she noticed the abundance of calligraphy and the depth of the expression in it. She tells FACT that she was also hugely inspired by the significance of the materials used. “Everything there has meaning, from the marble and stone of the structure to the cleaning materials, even the mud,” she says. Fuller's earth, also known as Multani Mitti, is applied like a mud face-pack to discoloured portions of the monument. She first began exploring the creative potential in calligraphy after this powerful experience. fact magazine

87

• ARTS & CULTURE

The influences of other artists are also visible in her earlier works. Rutba was inspired by the artist eL Seed, whose abstract calligraphy she calls “beautiful and compelling”. Currently this style of calligraphy doesn’t have a large audience, but Rutba likes the aesthetic disruption of the word order and has explored the creative canvas of the modern abstract approach as a contrast to the traditional work she specialises in. She was further influenced by the elegance of a Swiss calligraphy artist Shéma, who creates abstract textured work in gold and silver. Rutba has produced work directly inspired by her. After moving to Dubai to attend university, her first customer turned out to be a family member, when her uncle commissioned Rutba to create a painting for his new house. Her work soon got attention and, after launching an Instagram page on the advice of her mum, she started receiving orders from the social media platform. She hasn’t looked back since, selling 40 paintings online. Her audience consists mostly of young millennial art lovers and, in particular, mothers who find meaning in the work she creates. These mums often commission personalised calligraphy artworks to keep in their homes. According to Rutba: “Ninety per cent of my art is based on religious meaning and prayers” and calligraphy pieces like welcoming prayers and blessings are requested most often. Her intricate calligraphy has evolved through intense study and application to her craft, which she feels has helped her improve. Rutba had also observed on her journey how often Arabic calligraphy is employed in Qatar in hotels and restaurants as a way

88

fact magazine

to organically weave culture into these key tourism touchpoints. It’s a tapestry of tradition that resonates deeply with the artist. Rutba paints predominantly in oils and acrylics. It’s clear that first-hand cultural experiences influence her work in this medium too. She mentions how Turkish culture inspired her portrayals of whirling dervish dancers in some of her paintings. After a visit to Turkey, she painted several works reflecting this inspiration, incorporating movement and colour rich in heritage and filled with these cross-cultural references. Painted with a knife which lends a specific texture to the work, Rutba’s pieces are possessed of an inherent tactile experience. Audiences can touch the textured surfaces and feel the character of the art. Rutba shared some more personal insights about her creative process describing how she uses painting as way to deal with pain and sadness or even anger. For example, after her father had surgery, and during his recovery process, she dealt with it through artistic expression. She also explained to us how she sometimes won’t paint for weeks and then suddenly the art flows and results in some of her very best work. For the artist who works hard in the corporate world, her creative mode is centred around the evenings after an intense day of work. Rutba also talks about working outside as a conduit to creativity with sensory inspiration coming from nature and music. When asked what her next step is as a developing artist, she talks of her ambition to exhibit, in a space like Katara. She also mentions a desire to explore more disruptive types of abstract calligraphy. A full exhibition of her current work would be the ideal platform to celebrate Rutba’s love affair with Arabic culture and contemporary idioms. We can’t wait for our invitation. ✤

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The story follows Gus (Christian Convery), a young human and deer hybrid, who must search for a new beginning in a post-apocalyptic world where 10 years prior, a virus decimated humanity. On his adventure, he encounters Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) and Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen), who help him find his way in this dangerous world. With the show being filmed in Auckland, New Zealand, you can expect beautiful scenery with incredible cinematography to accompany it. You are truly immersed in the adventure, and the background music only furthers your immersion. The complex storyline and multitude of characters also make this story unique and attention-grabbing. How to Avoid a Climate Disaster By Bill Gates

SPANISH LANGUAGE POP

ACOUSTIC POP

Revelación By Selena Gomez

Little Oblivions By Julian Baker

It took a decade to come to fruition,

From punk-rocker roots and the thoughtful acoustic confessionals of her first two albums – 2015’s Sprained Ankles and 2017’s Turn Out The Lights - to the current day multi-instrumental iteration of the artiste, Julian Baker is going places, emotionally and aesthetically with her music. In her latest album Little Oblivions she has gone bigger on production while simultaneously pairing down the personnel involved. She has embraced a richer more expansive soundscape, most evident on the bombastic opening track Hardline, and yet does this very much on her own. Thanks in part to the quarantine restrictions, Baker plays almost every instrument featured on the album, with minimal backing from anybody else. Less is more, it seems. The good news is that she maintains the lyrical honesty of the first two albums while taking the arrangement to particularly interesting new places. Her ‘lockdown project’ is an exercise in going big-band but staying true to the little things that count.

but Selena Gomez’s first Spanish album justifies the journey. The 28-year-old

singer's

EP came with

this

seven-song quote

from

Gomez “I think it will be worth the wait," directly referencing her 2011 Tweet "Can't wait for y'all to hear the Spanish record”.

In deference

to a language which had seemingly become just a childhood memory and not a contemporary dialect for her, Gomez met with a Spanish coach every day while recording the EP and she has achieved what she committed to in her desire to be precise and respect the audience. A more mature artist these days, Gomez bares her heart on Revelación and has the confidence to show her insecurities, as in Baila Conmigo, where she playfully channels the criticism that she’s not fluent in Spanish. The multi-dimensionality of the language and hip-moving looseness of the production works for Spanish and English audiences alike.

Since ‘retiring’ as the world’s richest man, Bill Gates has spent considerable time making a positive impact on the planet. In his new book, the tech philanthropist reviews a decade spent investigating the causes and effects of climate change. Microsoft’s founder takes a typically analytical approach to the challenges we face, but makes it palatable for anyone, offering clarity about the precise problems and how technology specifically can solve them. With insights from scientists, engineers, and political and finance analysts, Gates articulates the need to work towards net-zero emissions and the innovation available to achieve it. It’s a profound book that deserves ‘must-read’ status.

His latest novel – a 500-page piece of exuberance – My Year Abroad, is one of the most exciting fiction works this decade. Focused on the central character Tiller, a New York college student who meets an array of characters in a traveloguestyled narrative of the passive protagonist, the novel is filled with dark absurdist humour, as well as some sleight-of-hand suspense and surprise. Playing out as a commentary on Western tropes, Eastern stereotypes, global finance and even mentorship, at its core it’s a subtle critique of the American Dream gone mad. fact magazine

Balmessence

NEW &

Summer Nails Balmessence has come up with five top tips for great summer nails in line with the launch of this season’s new products: • Keep fingernails dry and clean to prevent bacterial growth beneath the nail. • Moisturise! Moisturising is a well-known must for healthy skin, but it’s often overlooked in nail care. • Leave your cuticles alone! It’s common practice to cut, push back or try to get rid of cuticles altogether, but cuticles are not the enemy. In fact, the cuticle is the nail’s natural protective seal. • Practice good nail hygiene. Use sharp manicure scissors or clippers and trim your nails straight across, then round the tips in a gentle curve. Use a gentle brush to clean under the nails, avoid the urge to dig in with a sharp tool. • Rethink your products. Avoid using nail care products containing harsh chemicals. Natural/organic lacquers are better for your nails because of the quality and the exclusion of many harmful toxins contained in traditional nail polishes. Check out the latest Balmessence nail products: Fedua Ultimate Gel Effect Nail Paint in Candy, Azure, Peach Blossom and Dandelion Yellow; Fedua Golden Jelly Hand Mask; Fedua Macaroon Anti-Ageing Hand Cream; Fedua Rose Cuticle Gel and Fedua Rainbow Cuticle Oil.

Catrice Cosmetics Poreless Perfection Powder Tired of unwanted shine when you’re out and about? Catrice can help. Among its latest line of products is the silicone-free pressed Poreless Perfection Powder. Boasting an extremely soft texture and a universal shade, which claims to adapt to individual skin tones, it melts into the complexion and makes small imperfections disappear. Perfect for the humid days to come.

Flormar Kiss Me More As the summer gets into full swing, we look forward to days lounging by the beach and pool. However, one concern that many of us have is our make-up not holding up well when exposed to heat. One solution to lipstick smudging and wearing off is Flormar’s must-have Kiss Me More collection. Gorgeous shades, rich pigments and lasting hold are what this collection is all about. Aptly named Lip Tattoos, you can’t eat, drink or kiss them away. With a smooth and creamy texture, these liquid lipsticks are easy to apply and, unlike other mattes, they do not dry out the lips. The Kiss Me More Lip Tattoo collection is made up of 22 shades including six new natural colours to suit every skin tone.

Uriage Eau Thermale Water Sleeping Mask Available at Lifestyle, this mask gives the chance for your skin to dive into a real thermal bath. Uriage Thermal Water’s hydrating power comes in an ultra-light jellified textured night mask which, with the added benefit of eight hours of sleep, leaves the skin texture smoothed, fully moisturised, supple and soft for an ultra-fresh glow. The mask helps to rebuild the cutaneous barrier to maintain an optimal hydration rate; it recreates a surface film to progressively release moisturising agents from the cream and acts on the corneocyte cement to durably boost hydration. Edelweiss extract leaves you with fresh and glowy skin.

What We’re (Still) Talking About Tour de France

Great Barrier Reef

Sporting Personalities

So, finally spectators were allowed back at the Tour de France, the world’s biggest and most famous cycling race. Beforehand the riders had been saying they were looking forward to seeing the fans, whose presence has always been customary along the route of the road race. However, that fan-welcoming view may have changed after one woman, seemingly keen to send a poster greeting to her grandparents via the TV cameras and totally oblivious to her surroundings, stepped slightly into the road and caused the biggest pile-up in the event’s history! Horrifying images from the crash were all over the TV and social media showing the

The Australian Government is apparently up in arms after UNESCO said it planned to list the Great Barrier Reef as ‘in danger’. The reef is currently World Heritage Listed with UNESCO citing it as ‘A site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. It contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc. It also holds great scientific interest as the habitat of species such as the dugong (‘sea cow’) and the large green turtle, which are threatened with extinction.’ However, in recent years there have been several instances of bleaching due

Love it or hate it, or somewhere in between, you can’t escape football at the moment as the delayed Euro 2020 tournament reaches its final stages. And even non-fans can’t have failed to be touched by the plight of Denmark’s Christian Eriksen as he fell to the floor during the match between Denmark and Finland on June 12. Many broadcasters, among them the BBC, have been taken to task for continuing to transmit live as the player failed to get up and medics were seen administering first aid chest compressions on the pitch. Unlike the story-hungry press, his teammates really stepped up forming

to climate change, from which the reef may not be able to recover. And the UN accuses Australia, which has a significant carbon footprint due to exported fossil fuel emissions, of failing to protect this spectacular natural resource. Australia, on the other hand, says the decision is political. And, though not going so far as to outright accuse Beijing, China does chair the UN watchdog committee. We reckon it doesn’t matter who’s pulling the strings, the Great Barrier Reef is too important for politics.

a human shield around their fallen colleague, offering some much-needed privacy, and Team Captain, Simon Kjaer, was then seen comforting Eriksen’s frantic partner as the player’s life, seemingly, hung in the balance. Things did not look good as Eriksen was stretchered off the pitch but, thankfully, within hours he was texting his teammates and even demanding that the match resume. That’s some guts! The Danes, initially, had not looked particularly promising. But they went on to a rousing performance against Wales to secure a place in the last 16. As we’re going to press, they are due to play the Czech Republic on July 3. We wish them luck and if true spirit and teamwork has anything to do with it, they could just be the ones to watch.

front runners tumbling to the ground and those behind them piling on top. Several riders were hurt, some of them seriously. Meanwhile the cause of the mayhem appears to have escaped injury free and now faces jail as well as being sued by the event organisers. If you ask us, she should pay double for abject stupidity! 98
