Happy New Year...We Hope

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” Walt Disney

W

ell, the new year’s finally here but, with the current news on covid, I’m not really sure it’s something to celebrate. I’ve been OK throughout the pandemic up to now. Walking the dog, visiting a small group of friends and the occasional restaurant review trip – but

early, when there’re few people around. Now somehow, coming to the end of 2021 and entering 2022 with the situation seemingly little improved, both I and the dog are getting a bit bored. I really feel for people who have had to home school and look after families, in sometimes very difficult circumstances, over the last couple of years – at least the dog just needs a ball throwing and a treat to chew on. Still, all this time for reflection did give me the idea for this month’s cover story in which we’ve put together a mini bucket list, some from the FACT team, others

from readers and friends. I wonder if you can guess which were mine and hope they all offer some inspiration for when life gets back to normal, And in our big announcement, you’ll find the culmination of several months’

work as we announce the nominees for this year’s FACT Dining Awards. To help with the judging the team has been out and about on several food reviews. We’ve also spoken to two chefs this month, who had plenty to say about their food and Qatar’s ever improving dining scene. And Asad caught up with cinematic storyteller Shaima al-Tamimi to hear about her latest documentary. Elsewhere in the magazine you’ll find lots of local news in the Listen Up section, as well as the latest in fashion, books, films and music and plenty more besides. A SOUNDWAVE ACROSS DOHA Born in and supported by Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, this multidisciplinary platform aims to create awareness about contemporary culture related to electronic music.

S

onic Jeel, an experimental and imaginative experience, has been carving a niche for itself in Doha’s art scene. Born in and supported by Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) – a Qatar Foundation partner – the multidisciplinary platform aims to create more awareness about contemporary culture related to electronic music, sound installations and audiovisual approaches, while working alongside the wider creative community in Doha and the region. Sonic Jeel is a collaborative initiative made up of artists investigating sound design and audiovisual media within the context of Qatar and the Gulf region. The group is comprised of VCUarts Qatar faculty members – Associate Professor Michael Hersrud and Simone Muscolino, Director of Art Foundation – with other VCUarts Qatar faculty, students and alumni. They describe their ambition as building a platform for “exploratory research production and distribution of experimental sonic work in support of the growing creative local industry.” Their energetic sound is heavily influenced by the unique experience they are living in Doha. “Our work is deeply influenced by the place in which we reside, the sounds we hear around us and the people we meet,” said Simone. “It's kind of embedded in the creative process.” “It’s a special experience,” said Michael. “We are fortunate to 8

collaborate with an international pool of students and faculty at VCUarts Qatar, and I'm happy that this mix of culture can be heard in the unique sounds that Sonic Jeel has produced.” Over the past year, Sonic Jeel has worked closely with VCUarts Qatar Assistant Professor Hadeer Omar, who is also an independently practising new media artist. Hadeer, a primary collaborator with Sonic Jeel, has been integral to several recent performances, specifically contributing her expertise of projected video and light to create immersive spaces. The artistic collective has participated in multiple local and international events over the past year. “Sound is often intangible, so we attempt to connect our sound production to something physical that could translate to an object or activating a space for an event, similar to what we did for Printed Matter’s Virtual Art Book Fair in New York,” said Michael. In partnership with Getfadaa, an online platform connecting artists and spaces around the world, and Msheireb Downtown Doha’s Al Hosh Gallery, the group represented Doha under the theme ‘When the World Closed’, which also saw ambitious acts from Khartoum, Beirut, Gaza and Marrakech through different art forms such as dance, visual arts, music and theatre. ✤

CROSS-CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING Qatar Foundation has launched the Alif Ba Exhibition in Washington DC to mark Qatar – USA Year Of Culture 2021. Children and families in the USA are being given a taste of the Arabic language through an exhibition in the nation’s capital, organised by Qatar Foundation (QF) as part of the Qatar-USA Year of Culture 2021 celebrations. The Alif Ba Exhibition – an interactive experience that allows people to explore the Arabic alphabet through 28 hands-on displays of letters – was launched on December 18 in time for Qatar National Day and World Arabic Language Day. The show, being held at the National Children’s Museum in Washington DC, will run until the end of February 2022. After this, it will be based at the Qatar America Institute of Culture until August 2022. Visitors can touch the letters that make up the Huruf alAbjadiyah – the letters of the Arabic alphabet – and listen to the sound of each, to discover Arabic words that start with those letters. From this, they can practice writing and tracing the Arabic alphabet for themselves. The exhibition is part of the latest edition of the Years of Culture cultural exchange programme run by Qatar Museums (QM), with the US being Qatar’s 2021 partner country. Through activities, events and festivals, the programme promotes cross-cultural understanding and respect, with the Alif Ba Exhibition being designed to help enhance people’s appreciation of how language and communication can connect societies and cultures. 10

“As a culturally diverse organisation committed to building bridges of knowledge, preserving and promoting the Arabic language, culture and heritage, and fostering social interaction, we are delighted to have brought the Alif Ba Exhibition to the capital of the US,” said Hend al-Mousawi, Head of Culture Engagement and Activation at the QF. “This exhibition is an engaging, interactive, and fun way of sharing the beauty, richness, and enduring relevance of the Arabic language with a US audience and reflects how QM’s Years of Culture programme – which the QF is proud to support – broadens minds and perspectives through bringing people together to learn, explore and discover,” she added. To celebrate the opening of the Alif Ba Exhibition, QF International partnered with the National Children’s Museum to host a festival that included an exploration of calligraphy, Arabic music and storytelling. Among those who attended the opening of the Alif Ba Exhibition were a group of students from schools within the QF’s Pre-University Education ecosystem, who, during their time in Washington DC, also attended an event to mark the Qatar – USA Year of Culture 2021, at the Qatar American Institute of Culture. ✤

ARTEFACTS ON DISPLAY An exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art is showcasing a range of items from the Museum of Islamic Arts’ (MIA) artefacts collection. For the first time in the US, the Smithsonian is showcasing an exceptional group of 17th-century textiles and fulllength oil portraits from Safavid Iran (1501 – 1722), on loan from MIA in Doha. Fashioning an Empire: Safavid Textiles, on view until May 15, 2022, forms part of the Qatar – USA 2021 Year of Culture, an annual international cultural exchange designed to deepen understanding between nations and their people. Complemented by some of the finest illustrated manuscript paintings from the National Museum of Asian Art, the exhibition underscores the importance of silk in the social, economic and religious life of 17th-century Iran and its role in positioning the empire at the nexus of a vibrant global exchange. In addition to fuelling economic prosperity, textiles served as powerful intermediaries for new artistic ideas and stimulated a vibrant new Safavid pictorial language. “It is very meaningful to have this collection on view in Washington, DC, for audiences outside of Doha to see these precious Safavid textiles and full-length portraits for the first time,” MIA director Dr Julia Gonnella said. “These exquisite carpets and brocade textiles speak to the importance of Persian silk to the country of Iran as an export to the Ottoman Empire and Europe. And their details delight on their own as well.” Fabrics were fashioned into clothing and used as indicators of status and wealth; they played an equally important role as furnishing, upholstery, covers and curtains. As visitors’ journey through the exhibition, they will encounter a range of Safavid luxury textiles, including silks 14

made with gilt silver or silver covered threads, the most expensive type of fabric on the European market. These fabrics were often fashioned into clothing and furnishings and, most importantly, into ‘robes of honour’. Such robes were only distributed by the ruler to high-ranking officials or visiting dignitaries as a sign of respect. Some of the silks in the exhibition carry stylised designs; others are inspired by more naturalistic patterns, inspired by Indian models, while still others draw on Western examples, presenting a tremendous range of motifs and production. “We are delighted to welcome visitors to this landmark exhibition that tells such a poignant story of global and artistic exchange,” said Chase F Robinson, the Smithsonian’s Dame Jillian Sackler director. MIA is currently carrying out a facilities enhancement project to reinstall its permanent collection galleries to provide a more accessible, engaging, and educational experience. The reimagining of the space will introduce a comprehensive visitor trail, the creation of expanded interpretive materials to help contextualise the masterworks, and provision of new mobile- and child-friendly resources to make the museum more accessible for families and younger visitors. Many newly acquired and conserved works of art will be on view with a large percentage displayed in MIA’s permanent galleries for the first time, alongside the masterpieces for which MIA is known internationally. ✤

FROM SCHOOL TO STAGE GEMS (AAQ) music teacher, Martin Farragher, recently performed at Qatar’s inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix. For GEMS American Academy – Qatar (AAQ) music teacher Martin Farragher, music has always been a part of his life, from singing in bands in his home country of Ireland to performing at weddings. In November 2021, the guitarplaying teacher swapped singing to Grade 3 students for performing at Qatar’s inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix. Farragher, who performs under the stage name Faraway Martin, landed a last-minute opportunity to play on the main stage. For the teacher, music is a passion that he gets to share with his students at AAQ and the whole community. “The staging and the setting were amazing but, for me, the real highlight of performing at the Grand Prix was seeing some of my students there with their parents. My students think I’m a celebrity (I’m far from that!), but it certainly seems to motivate them to pay more attention in class.” Gala al-Alansari, a Grade 3 AAQ student, who was at the Grand Prix performance with her parents said: “I loved hearing my favourite Faraway Martin song, Let You Down. There were so many people and it was cool that Mr Martin came down from the stage and took pictures with me and my family.” Faraway Martin finds that having a repertoire of songs and videos to show the students inspires them, and enables them to connect with different genres and instruments. “This term, my Grade 2 class has been learning Three Little Birds by Bob Marley in sign language, and some of the students were not connecting with the music,” he explains. 22

fact magazine

“But when I showed them a video of me playing the same song at a gig, it really motivated them. “Performing at large gigs like the Grand Prix is awesome, especially as many live events were cancelled due to Covid-19. Getting back on stage and performing original music is a wonderful feeling. As a teacher, I have the unique opportunity to share the joy of music with the next generation and teach them to find their own voice.” Faraway Martin’s grand prix performance has led to further opportunities and his latest single, I Wanna Go, has recently been released to radio stations in Qatar, where it has made its way into the Top 40 most played songs on QBS Radio. Additionally, the teacher is preparing new music for 2022 and is planning an all-ages concert in Doha where his students and their families can come to support, and sing along. Mark Lentz, CEO / Principal of GEMS AAQ, said, “We are very proud of Mr Farragher’s achievements in and out of school. We are fortunate to have such an excellent musician and inspirational teacher on our staff. Students at AAQ get to enjoy creative arts and music throughout their school careers, and it is an integral part of our school culture.” ✤

GROUND-BREAKING MUSICAL RESEARCH Researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q) have explored the cognitive and neural basis of human creativity by monitoring the brain activity of a musician improvising on the ney, or Arabic flute. The research, published in Frontiers in Psychology, a leading journal, is the first scientific study of the neuromusicology of Middle Eastern music. Led by Dr Ghizlane Bendriss, PhD of Neuroscience and Assistant Professor of Biology, the team of researchers used a wireless electroencephalographic (EEG) headset to record the brainwaves of a musician as he played a total of 24 improvisations at low, medium and high tempos on the ney. Dr Bendriss designed this project after a student, Mohamed Yaghmour, demonstrated strong interest in research. She gathered a complete team to mentor him for this original and first-of-its-kind study in neuromusicology. The team was composed of psychology specialist Sarah Roach, biostatistics expert Padmakumari Sarada, and music educators Ibrahim Kadar and Zhivka Pesheva from Qatar Music Academy. Dr Bendriss said: “Middle Eastern Music is characterised by the use of additional microtones, resulting in a tonalspatial system called maqam. These scales have played an important role in healing and medicine since the 10th century in the Middle East, and many theories associate the use of specific maqams with treatment of specific conditions.” Using sophisticated computer software, the researchers compared the data from the EEG signals and observed that each maqam was characterised by a topographically unique combination of significant EEG changes, suggesting the existence of what they termed “maqam electroencephalographic signatures”. The study also provides further support to previous research that has associated musical improvisation with increased activity in the left-brain hemisphere, particularly of low-

frequency brain waves in the frontal and temporal areas of the left-brain. It additionally supports the observation that musical improvisation is also characterised by an increase in levels of integrated activity in both brain hemispheres at highfrequency signatures. Until now, almost all research in the field of neuromusicology has concentrated on Western music – it’s believed this is the first project to use EEG data to study brain activity while improvising with Arabic maqams and while playing a Middle Eastern instrument, the ney. The researchers found patterns in the EEG data that showed similarities in the perception of maqams with similar intervals. In common with studies of Western music, a greater incidence of high-frequency brain-waves, which are associated with negative emotions, was observed in relation to improvisations based on nahawand, which approximates to the minor scale. Dr Bendriss said the results of the study are highly relevant because they highlight the importance of considering intervals, tones, and microtones in studies concerned with the processing of music and emotional correlates. “This study on spontaneous music performance backs up evidence from pre-existing research which suggests that the prefrontal cortex is of critical importance for creativity, self-reflection, and sensory processing. We intend this study to be the first in a series; with the help of Ibrahim Kadar, who is well versed into studying combinations of maqams in Middle Eastern music, we hope to develop a greater understanding of the emotional correlates of the maqams and by doing so to gain insight into the effects and applications of music-based therapeutic interventions, especially in the context of the Middle East, its people and its rich traditions of music and medicine.” ✤

HEAD TO THE HIMALAYAS Meditation and retreat together is a proven process for training your mind to focus, directing your thoughts, increasing awareness of yourself and your surroundings and connecting with your higher self. What better than sitting, breathing and going for inner and outer adventure that could lead to a lifetransforming experience of growth and self-discovery. The best way to maximise relaxation is by getting closer to nature. Breathing in and out in a fertile valley that provides isolation from the rest of the world in an idyllic, utopian environment of sorts. Biting organic apricots, cherries, grapes, plums and peaches while absorbing the breathtaking yearround scenery is something you need to start your year. Offgrid destination for American and European backpackers since the 1990s, Hunza, located in the Himalayas (northern part of Pakistan) is a place to be this year. Even arriving there requires you to slow down. Rough passages and steep ridges will excite you to forego the Jeep and trek through on your own two feet. Serena Hotel in Hunza offers detoxifying hydrotherapy spa treatments overlooking the valley for a perfect getaway. There are several meditation sessions offered there as well, on an open-air terrace that works really well to help connect your energies. It’s a proven thing: all the stress and negativity that you take with you will be washed away effortlessly, leaving you with a feeling of just being. No wonder, the Hunza tribe, one of the most mysterious tribes on Earth, lead the happiest and healthiest life with an average life span of 100 years.

PICK UP A PAINTBRUSH Do you think of yourself as a creative person? Even if you don’t, give it a chance. Try your hand at canvas and pursuing painting as it has massive potential to promote positive mental health. Painting helps to let it all out and express yourself and your emotions. Such creative activity can enable a person to process the stress and strain more successfully, whilst also giving a creative, calm perspective to situations. So where to start? When it comes to paints, there are many different types you can choose from. However, three main options to consider are watercolours, oils and acrylics. It’s all about flexibility and looking for what works for you. However, if you’re new at it — try oil paints. A little expensive and they take time to dry out but once dried you can always repaint and add layering. So, there’s room for mistakes and redoing everything all over again. But also, there’s nothing that’s a mistake in art — art is just art. Once you’ve got all the relevant materials, putting everything on canvas might still be a task you can’t quite get a hang of. You can draw inspiration from your surroundings. From a vase of flowers on your credenza to the outside view you see. Something simple could make such a stunning minimalistic piece of art. Don’t strive for perfection at once, but just try to explore your colour palette and what you like to make out of it.

ADVENTURE AT ALTITUDE If adventure is one of your pursuits, then hiking Mount Kilimanjaro should definitely be on your list. It’s tough, long and challenges you to the core in the most beautiful way. You’ll get to experience so many different backdrops in one hit. The journey from the base to the peak is quite similar to travelling from the equator to Antarctica in a matter of a few days as the path spans over five distinct ecological zones, from rain forest to the frozen zones, with temperatures almost below freezing. Layering up and layering down is just a part of it whilst trekking through it. Just when you start thinking it’s getting cold, the weather will change tremendously encouraging you to strip down to shorts. This is the beauty of this place. Navigating slowly through the steep and treacherous mudslides — rock by rock and step by step. We’d be lying to you if we said hiking ‘Kili’ is easy. Because it’s not. You’ll have to be prepared for at least three to eight hours of hiking a day for five to 11 days straight, so you will definitely need to get in shape. On your feet and let’s go!

BRING ON THE BAND It’s time to stop pretending to pin a favourite guitar solo in the shower. Step up and take the lead. Whether you dream of swaying crowds of people or playing something for your own self enjoyment and peace, a musical instrument can for sure help you express your thoughts in a way better way. All it’ll require of you is a little patience and voila! You’ll find the hidden artist in you. Start with online courses first and get familiar with the type of instrument and its levels before joining a class physically. With online courses you’ll start with the basics, going from learning how to hold the instrument and then to playing easy scales and chords. It’s always a good idea to begin by producing or reproducing simple rhythms to get familiar with keys and which string makes which voice when struck with a specific force or pressure. If you master that quickly, then this is just the first level of many different advanced-level journeys. Also, don’t just practise solo. Whatever you learn, play it for others, in front of others — so they can give you honest feedback and root for you to do even better. It is totally okay if you have no prior knowledge of music notes. You only need to practise for half an hour each day to see major improvements. So, are you set to surprise your friends with a little performance the next time you all gather?

GOING GREEN This one might be the most important to achieve. Because it’s about giving back to Mother Earth. The Emissions Gap Report 2021 indicated a global rise of 2.7 degrees in temperature by the end of the century, which is well above the goals of the Paris climate agreement and is expected to lead to catastrophic changes in Earth’s temperature. So why not play your own little part in making a change. Your carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases you produce as you live your life. You can use an online website carbonfootprint.com to find out how much you’re doing and what happens if you take some steps. Calculating carbon footprint includes approximately how many kilometres you travel by car, bus, train and plane, the energy usage in your home, your spending on shopping and the composition of your diet. Some of our suggestions to reduce your carbon footprint? For starters eat low on the food chain. This means eating fruits, veggies, greens and beans. Opt for organic and local products that are in season. This will reduce transporting food from places far away — reducing the emissions caused by trucks, ships or rail. Avoid buying fast fashion and instead opting for recycled, sustainable clothing is also a step forward. To directly impact the environment positively, you can also pledge to planting trees, two trees every week. This would result in you planting 104 trees in one year alone.

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE If you’ve ever watched TV or online documentaries of African wildlife, from the big five – elephants, lions, leopards, rhino and buffalo – to their slightly less famous but still wonderful counterparts, such as giraffe and impala, you can’t help but be enthralled by these amazing creatures. And, if you’re anything like us, at least one item on your bucket list involves getting up close and personal with some of them. Of course, you could go on a safari, which are available with varying levels of comfort and luxury and daily or twice-daily game drives. But, if you really want to get to know these incredible animals, then imagine volunteering at a sanctuary or game reserve where you are sure to get a once-in-a-lifetime experience while learning more about these creatures, their habitats and the people who live alongside them. Harnas Wildlife Foundation, in Namibia, has a great backstory and a good reputation. Or check out wildlifeact.com for ethical projects across the African continent. To get involved closer to home, you could begin by sponsoring an animal on any of the volunteer projects which will usually get you updates on your refuge resident as well as species-specific info. Or try volunteering at a local animal sanctuary such as QAWS or Paws Rescue Qatar to get a feel for what it’s like to actually be around animals. You can find information for both on social media.

BAILA FLAMENCO EN MADRID Hands up all those who’ve ever watched a dance movie or performance and wished they could move like that. Whether it be the suppressed energy and forbidden ambition of the ballet in Billy Elliot, the classic disco moves of Saturday Night Fever or watching Kpop heroes Omega taking on super-hard dance challenges on Tik Tok, there’s a dance (and a dance video) for absolutely everyone. For us, it’s the passion of Flamenco. The drama and sinuous rhythm of the music matched to the stamping and tapping of the dancers’ feet, the women’s dresses, the castanets, guitars and eloquent reminiscence of times almost past. In 2010 flamenco was recognised by Unesco as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage and references to the music date back to 1774. It originated among the Gypsy people of southern Spain and went on to become a worldwide phenomenon. These days, the Spanish capital, Madrid, is recognised as the home of the world’s best flamenco and we’d love nothing better than to visit and experience this musical art form ourselves. But we know that this inspiring but technical dance style is not one to be emulated without significant study and practise. Of course, the obvious step is to take classes but if, like us, you can’t find a flamenco class locally or simply can’t fit regular sessions into a busy schedule, we suggest beginning with any form of dance to get your body moving from following flamenco videos online to joining in a salsa class at your local bar or even just shaking your booty around the kitchen at home. Before you know it, restrictions allowing, you’ll be booking your flights and getting immersed in the world of Spanish dance.

BEST FOOT FORWARD We have to admit that this one’s smacks of ‘New Year, New You’ but it’s honestly been a long-held ambition to compete in a triathlon. Yes, we’re desk jockeys who can raise a sweat just coming up the stairs to the office but this is something that’s been on the radar for several years. We simply love the idea of being among the wetsuit-clad hoards throwing themselves en masse into the region’s somewhat chilly winter waters to complete the swim part of the challenge then exiting the water to bike or run the next stage. However, there’s the small inconvenience of our current fitness levels, or lack thereof, to consider. So, how to begin? Well, first things first, if you’re a non-swimmer, then you need to learn. The distance for a mini or super sprint triathlon can be as low as 400km for the swim but, trust us, that can feel like an awfully long way if you’re not a particularly strong swimmer. So, learn and then swim regularly building up your distance. Most of us have ridden a bike at some stage but how many could set out cold and take on a 10km ride in the morning? Yeah, but no! Get yourself a comfortable bike, join a cycling club to make sure you have regular sessions and get pedaling. Not a runner? Then we recommend the Couch to 5k running programme which was developed by the UK’s National Health Service and has been taken up by would-be runners all over the world. You can find details at www.nhs.uk and there are loads of apps you can download to help. It’s also a good idea to join a local running group such as Qatar Running Club for regular meets and details of events. Put them all together and get ready for the run, ride and swim of your life. 32

TAKE TO THE WAVES Boating, in this part of the world, tends to conjure up images of motor-powered yachts, from small to immense, slicing their way through the waves. Even the traditional dhows have engines these days. But the lure of the sailing boat is what’s captured our hearts. Gliding gently and silently into the sunset as the wind ruffles the sails. A pretty picture, no? However, for our bucket list, gently gliding could not be further from our minds. We’re all about action and one of life’s really big adventures, in the form of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. A biennial race that takes paying amateur crews on one or more legs of a circumnavigation of the globe. Eleven specially-designed identical yachts take part with professional skippers and other qualified people, alongside the volunteers, on a 10-month journey. The beauty of this race is that you don’t have to be an experience sailor to take part. There’s a four-week training period for volunteers carried out aboard the yachts they’ll be crewing and the vessels carry a double crew including the professionals. A great way to get started is to check out www. clipperroundtheworld.com and maybe think about booking some lessons in our somewhat milder waters to get a taste for sailing sans motor – it’s actually a great fitness activity and a good way to meet new friends. So, this year, we’ll be heading to Regatta Sailing Academy, clutching our motion sickness pills and taking a step towards the adventure of a lifetime.

GET SCRIBBLING Did you spend your childhood with your head in a book or engrossed in an electronic reading device? Did you make up stories, probably never sharing them with anyone? All common things for kids, right? But, did that obsession with storytelling carry on into later life? Always scribbling story ideas on scraps of preciously preserved paper or, more likely these days, making notes on your phone that you keep meaning to develop? Then you, my friend, are a frustrated writer! Now, we may make our living writing the words you see each month but that doesn’t stop us dreaming of becoming published authors – you know, the next J.K. Rowling or E.L. James (only better written, of course). But seriously, never mind the book tours, celebrity and multi-million-dollar publishing deals; for us, the candle of that childhood dream still burns bright after all these years and we would love to see our names on the cover of a bona fide book. And it turns out that, these days, there’s an alternative to the traditional hunt for an agent and publisher. Options such as self-publishing on Amazon and other websites is now both common and, potentially, quite lucrative. If you share our dream start out by joining a writers’ group to instill discipline and get feedback. Carve out some time each day to write. Even if it’s only 20 minutes, it’s a start and will become a good habit. And never, ever stop scribbling down those ideas – you just never know what might become the next blockbuster. Meanwhile, we’re scanning lists of publishers and promising to get that already half written book out of the note pad and onto our screen.

n 2006 Audi launched its first SUV, the Q7. It was greeted with great enthusiasm by the general public and motorcar aficionados alike. Audi went on to expand the ‘Q’ range to five dedicated ‘Q’ models, including the launch of the Q5 in 2009, the Q3 in 2012, the Q2 in 2016 and the Q8 in 2019. Subsequently, this German-based super brand went on to launch further generations of each model, including their very latest version of the Q5. This month, compliments of the outstanding team at Audi Centre Qatar, FACT magazine got behind the wheel of the 2022 Audi Q5 45 TFSI Sportback Quattro, an experience we won’t be forgetting anytime soon. The Q5 Sportback is instantly impressive to the eye, exuding the powerful yet refined presence that is now synonymous with the ever popular ‘Q’ range. At the front, the LED headlights, with their signature daytime running light feature, are fitted as standard, whilst the flawlessly designed honeycomb octagonal Singleframe grille contributes greatly to the vehicle’s robust appearance. At the flanks, elegant lines flow effortlessly from front to rear, emphasising the stylish five-double-spoke alloy wheels as well as the subtle roof spoiler. The body of the Q5 tapers acutely at the back end, leading the eye to the wellcrafted LED rear combination lamps. Four chrome-plated oval

tailpipe trims sit under the tail end bumper, yet another striking feature highlighting the sporty intent of the new Q5. Slipping inside the Sportback, we were greeted by uber comfortable, electrically adjustable sport seats with four-way lumbar support and memory function, alongside a host of other driver-friendly features. The dark colours of the interior are complemented by contrasting stitching located on both the steering wheel and seating. The three-spoke, flat bottomed, sports contour, leather wrapped, multifunctional steering wheel, complete with electromechanical power steering and electric adjustment capabilities, is so impressive, it deserves a paragraph of its very own. As we carefully inspected every inch of the vehicle, we noted that all the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout were of a premium quality, as expected from a prestigious brand such as Audi. Space wise, there is ample head, shoulder and leg room for all passengers, with the adjustable rear bench able to comfortably fit up to three adults. The sense of spaciousness inside the vehicle is enhanced through the presence of a panoramic glass sunroof. Optimum comfort levels are maintained with the aid of the threezone climate control system. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 510-litres, a volume that can be increased up to fact magazine

The MMI navigation plus infotainment system is also paired with a 10.1-inch touch display and can be activated via voice control using the phrase ‘Hey Audi’. THE MOST PURE BLACK Rolls-Royce has launched its most advanced Black Badge vehicle ever in Qatar.

According to online resources, Black Badge is a trim level that adds more luxury, more power, improved handling and a darkened aesthetic. Rolls-Royce debuted Black Badge with Wraith in 2016, followed by Dawn in 2017 then Cullinan in 2019. Now, a new iteration joins the family. The purest and most technologically advanced yet, Black Badge Ghost. Exterior Clients are free to select any of the marque’s 44,000 ‘ready-towear’ colours or create their own entirely unique bespoke hue. However, the overwhelming majority of those who have requested this darker expression of Ghost have selected the signature black. To create the industry’s darkest black, 45kg of paint is atomised and applied to an electrostatically charged body before being oven dried. The vehicle then receives two layers of clear coat before being hand-polished by a team of four craftspeople to produce the marque’s signature high-gloss piano finish. To match this dramatic coachwork, the team created a process that allows Rolls-Royce hallmarks such as the highly-polished Spirit of Ecstasy and Pantheon Grille to be subverted to a darker shade. The bespoke 21-inch composite wheelset is designed in Black Badge house style and reserved for Black Badge Ghost. Interior Advanced luxury materials have been meticulously created and crafted. A complex but subtle weave that incorporates a deep diamond pattern rendered in carbon and metallic fibres 38

has been used. And multiple wood layers are pressed onto the interior component substrates, using black Bolivar veneer for the uppermost base layer. Engineering Key to its potent character is the 'Architecture of Luxury', RollsRoyce’s proprietary all-aluminium spaceframe architecture that debuted with Phantom. This delivers extraordinary body stiffness and its flexibility and scalability allowed Ghost to be equipped with all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and the award-winning Planar Suspension system, which have been comprehensively re-engineered. The Rolls-Royce twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine remains. However, the flexibility has been exploited to generate an extra 29PS, creating a total output of 600PS. A further 50NM of torque has been added, for a total of 900NM. And the powertrain has received bespoke transmission and throttle treatments. To bolster confidence when exploiting Black Badge Ghost, the braking bite point has been raised and pedal travel decreased. “This no ordinary motor car. Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost is dark, minimalist, post-opulent and subverts all expectations. The alter-ego of Rolls-Royce, Black Badge Ghost is assertive, dynamic and potent. We are proud to unveil the Black Badge Ghost in Doha,” said Nasr Jairoudi, General Manager of RollsRoyce Motor Cars Doha. Black Badge Ghost is available to commission now. ✤ GO: CALL 4406 5625 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

5 OVER 5 •

Do you recall your first foray into the hospitality industry? I started my career in 1986 in the USA with Marriott International, following a Master’s Degree in Hotel Management and Food Service. After occupying several managerial positions over 18 years, I ventured into other international chains such as Melia, Mövenpick, Shaza and currently Deutsche Hospitality as GM for the stunning Steigenberger Doha. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Were there any mentors who influenced the way you work and think? My inspiration comes from a great writer, Steven Covey, who inspired many generations with his famous book on Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. In general, the inspiration starts with oneself who is eager to serve others and create experiences with lasting memories. What is the role of tourism in the growth of cultural experience in Qatar? And how do you think Steigenberger can play a part in it as a whole? Tourism is becoming a major and vital sector in the Qatari economy. Following the great boom of country development and construction, comes the next phase which is based on tourism. Qatar does possess a lot of opportunities for the segment and the country is now fully developed with

sufficient room supply to accommodate increasing numbers of travellers. In addition, Qatar is becoming a major hub for international sports events throughout the year, which draws thousands of sports lovers. As an expat in Doha, what, for you, are the most interesting and unique aspects of Qatar or your favourite thing to do here as a domestic tourist? Beside enjoying the culture of Qatar and dealing with Qataris, the city of Doha is full of food and beverage and nightlife opportunities to suit most expats. The country is also a great haven for families offering variety, high-quality education and enjoyable living. Tell us about your cultural background and what’s it like being a host at home? Are there any traditions you follow when welcoming guests to your personal space? My cultural background is a mix of Egyptian and American traits, where the Arabic values are welcoming, generosity and caring for others, while American values are focused on planning and positive reinforcement to get things done right. So, delivering the best experience for my guests, either at home or at work, is driven by the same traits that make every encounter provide a lasting memory. ✤ fact magazine

CHEF IN FOCUS •

T

here’s no way if you’re a fan of authentic Indian cuisine, that you don’t recognise Chef Jolly. Surjan Singh Jolly, fondly known as Chef Jolly, is an Indian celebrity chef who has been Chef Judge for Master Chef India, a television personality and culinary consultant with over two decades of experience in the hospitality industry. He’s Corporate Culinary Director at Riyasat restaurant at the St. Regis Doha, which specialises in Indian cuisine. Riyasat celebrates Indian fine-dining cuisine with a contemporary flair whilst reinventing ancient traditions into a global, youthful and edgy setting. The music at Riyasat is upbeat and the lifesize canvas of Bollywood-inspired paintings transports you to India within a few seconds. FACT recently caught up with Chef Jolly, who was visiting Doha, for a quick rapid-fire conversation. What do you enjoy cooking the most? Honestly, home food — comfort food. I love cooking okra, slow fried with mango powder and onion. It’s simple with some rotis at home. Do you do all the cooking at home yourself? My wife is a professional chef as well. So, she takes charge at home and I bow down to her. So, what’s your favourite dish? Anything that’s made with lots of love and passion. It can be any cuisine and something I can relate to. Best moment of your career so far? Every day for me is a new day and I look at the surprise elements every day. I have been fortunate; I’ve had great moments in my life. Right from my childhood to travelling, exploring my culinary skills, playing with my daughter — trying to be educated by her. I love those moments. Something that is organic, authentic and original.

If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be? It’s a tricky one! But how about FACT team? And what would you make? I’ll actually check with you all what you love. I’ll have to make it very bespoke to your liking and preferences rather than putting my bits to it. So, what is the most challenging ingredient to work with? I don’t think there’s any ingredient that’s challenging as long as you understand the characteristics of it and what values it brings in. But I have to keep telling people all the time that food needs to be seasoned perfectly with the right ingredients. Don’t go too overblown and use fresh ingredients. Ghee or Olive Oil? Both Baked or Fried? Baked Breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast? Breakfast for dinner! How many cooking scars do you have? I just got one here on the arm very recently. That was me trying to get something out of the oven. One thing you love about Doha? I love the culture and how self-reliant the city and country are becoming. I happened to visit one of the farms the other day and I was so happy to see how they’re growing produce by aeroponics and hydroponics. I love the whole intent, idea and food. One word for FACT? How about two? Absolutely awesome! ✤

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

Do you remember the first time you prepared something in the kitchen and knew this was your calling? Well, I don't know if it was my first call that made me become a chef, but I remember that I cooked with my grandmother from a very young age. She had a small restaurant and I always used to help her. I loved the aromas and different dishes that paraded in front of me. I used to help her with basic things like making cookies or croquettes. Sharing that moment with her was magical, and I think that is what I like most about the kitchen, the union, the family spirit, the integration and, of course, the flavours. With South American cuisine becoming more prevalent throughout the industry, where do you find flavour inspiration to elevate your dishes and make them stand out? Define your flavour process. I believe a lot in the fusion of cuisines. When I create a dish, I play a lot with textures and flavours. I want to create an experience on the palate of my guests, an explosion of flavours in a bite. In Latin American cuisine, there is a lot of this and there is a lot of diversity of products and different cultures. In Peru, we have a lot of Asian,

European and African influences that make our cuisine unique, with a lot of flavour and technique. Can you share your signature dish or style with us, and what makes it special to you? One of my favourite dishes is ceviche. As a good Peruvian, I always look for a way to create new ceviche. It is an impressive combination of flavours, acidity, sweetness, spiciness and freshness that makes this a flagship dish. What is that one ingredient that makes South American an outstanding cuisine and devises the entire flavour? Several products make our food so unique and delicious in Latin America, but I will highlight two. The first would be the Pacific Ocean and its marine richness. The marine diversity we have is incredible, it is a luxury for all chefs. The second would be our agriculture. We have an infinite variety of vegetables, including our chillis, with many flavours. However, the most important thing is to cook with passion respecting your roots and products. ✤ fact magazine

FLAVOURFUL INDIAN DELIGHTS Asad Khan headed to Saffron at Katara Cultural Village in search of lip-smacking butter chicken and Indian delicacies.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

S

affron gives elegant vibes from the moment you step inside. Mimicking the vibrant colours you find in Indian culture, green, white and gold interior pieces give a luxurious vibe to the restaurant. Since it was a sunny day, I decided that I wanted the best view in the room; I sat next to the window and watched the waves striking the shore. The delicate table arrangement simply fit into the scenario, making it the best spot for taking Instagram pictures. For the past few months, I’ve had this craving for nice Indian street food and had been on the hunt to find some of the best in Doha. The menu at Saffron had a variety of such street food dishes and with a very reasonable price range, considering the prime location and the chic look of the restaurant. I was served with Dahi Papri Chaat and Raaj Kachori to start my meal.. I can categorically say for Papri Chaat that I had never tasted a fresher, spicier or more delicious mix and pairing of crisp papadi with sweetened yoghurt, tamarind and mint chutney than this. It was hot! These appetisers gave me a hint of summer warmth as I sat celebrating the start of our somewhat chilly winter. The chaats were followed by Tandoori Bharwaan Aloo (stuffed potato barrels, slow roasted in the tandoor) and Tandoori Malai Broccoli (broccoli florets marinated with cashew nuts, fresh cream and carom seeds). Both were extremely well done in terms of flavours and spices. If you’re thinking to go and try out an all-veggie option, this has to be on your table. The first bite of Malai Broccoli had me questioning myself as to why I don’t go for veggies that often and is it only here or generally that they taste fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT so good? I thoroughly enjoyed having something new and this fantastic on my palate! Then the mains arrived in sensational presentations. The Murgh Makhani is a light option, perfect for lunch, while the Dum ki Raan came in all its glory with a salted gravy — lamb braised in brown onion which unleashed soft, flaky meat and the familiar aromas of the Indian cuisine. However, the Gosht Dum Biryani stole the spotlight with its tender and melt-in-your mouth boneless cuts of lamb leg, cooked on dum and presented in a mattka enclosed with oven-baked naan. This dish truly glorifies the upgrade in quality from the kitchen. On the sides, I also tasted some butter chicken paired with garlic naan which was equally as tasty as the other mains. It was the first time I gave butter chicken here a try, but it definitely won’t be the last. Three words: ‘This was love’. An apparent favourite of the locals who love to try Indian food and devour the flavours of rich cuisine, I could tell why. I couldn’t leave without trying the infamous Gulab Jamun Ice Cream Jar and Saffron Rasmalai and, to my delight, they did not disappoint. A quaint fresh cottage dumpling soaked in saffron flavoured milk was delectable to the core. A ‘must try’ and recommended to end the meal. ✤

• DINING DELIGHT

I

t’s all asado. In Latin America, the word ‘asado’ could mean two things. One: a cooking technique specifically roasting or barbecuing beef or other meats on a grill or open fire. And two: a barbecue party where guests can pick out said barbecue and roast, like an open buffet. It wouldn’t be erroneous to say that Papagayo Brunch at Fuego, JW Marriott Marquise City Centre Doha, is fully focused on the concept. Too much eating to excess from a grand buffet that’s often only lukewarm is not my preference for a Friday afternoon. Brunches of that sort are no longer a novelty for me. So, imagine how relieved I was when I sat down at Fuego. It’s sophisticated, classy and hugely enjoyable, especially with the live band playing. Welcome drinks are made and served right before you on a trolley the moment you enter the place — oh how refreshing as you contemplate the afternoon ahead. The menu here starts with appetisers, such as Salmon Leche De Tigre, and ends with Wagyu Carne De Onca. They serve the assorted list of 10 appetisers at once, and then give you enough time to properly savour and enjoy them before bringing the mains to your table via waiter service rather than a buffet scramble. The menu offers a fair selection for vegetarian options as well with Salada Mista and Guacamole. Each of the appetisers comes with a selection of fun sides and sauces. An in-house guacamole is served in a small bowl with a generous helping of the freshest tortillas. I can categorically say I have never tasted a fresher, tangier mix of guacamole in all my days here. It was so Latin guactastic. The Moqueca De Garoupa (Brazilian coconut-seafood stew), potato gratin with jack cheese, Columbian-style bean stew and very tasty Argentinian-style braised and smoked beef with potatoes — everything was flavourful and perfectly cooked. The smoked beef was so meaty, dark, savoury and altogether delicious, you might want to have a little bowlful by itself for a takeaway. The selection of taste and menu offerings is a great mix of food here, along with some adaptations to provide familiarity to the local palate. The food is wildly impressive for the price you pay but it’s the compellingly designed space of the restaurant that makes up the overall experience. The dessert was the priceless finish. It was both a highly sociable dish but also a work of art. What looked like just a normal cake slice was much more. It was rather very festive featuring coconut and pineapple. And the best thing, naturally sweet and moist to the core. Apart from that, fried pastry dough with Dulce De Leche dip was very warm in terms of its texture. You’ll love every bite of it. With desserts on the table, it looked like a psychedelic fantasy and I thoroughly enjoyed getting stuck into it because of the sweet tooth. The brunch is superbly curated and the dishes carefully calibrated to deliver delicate flavours. Highly recommended! ✤

JUICY AND SCRUMMY

Burgers are comfort food and that, paired with the chance to view your favourite sports on big screens, makes for a wonderful evening. FACT’s Asad Khan headed to the Hudson Tavern, at Mondrian Doha, that, apart from its juiciest burgers, also offers the ultimate sporty vibe! 58

FOODIE CORNER •

F

ancy a burger? Of course I do. The simple meatbetween-bread combo is always a winner for me, whether for a fast-food fix or a gourmet feast — it never disappoints. Over time, I’ve tried and tasted a vast range of patties in Doha but Hudson Tavern, at Mondrian Doha, has a burger game all of its own. Utter meaty marvels: juice-seeping, humming with flavour and far more complex in creation than they’re ever given credit for. And so, for the festive season I rolled up my sleeves and tucked in to one of the best flippin’ burgers in town. The vibe here is cosmic and sporty. You enter and see a bar on your left with a huge LED screen playing football matches. This is a sports bar with minimal background music for people to actually come-in, enjoy the sport, root for their favourite team and be able to listen to each other. The bricked walls give a ‘90s vibe, and so does the music. Burgers are considered ubiquitous and the ones served at Hudson are bona fide burgers of dreams. Although I was thrilled for the burgers and was trying to keep the maximum space for the buns, I was advised to try the BBQ wings and nachos. I placed the order and can easily say it was one of the best decisions. The BBQ wings had the perfect balance of BBQ sauce and sesame seeds. Nothing messy or overboard, giving a flavourful tanginess to the chicken. Now to the burger. I ordered The French One featuring beef patty, comte cheese, truffle garlic mushrooms, house onion relish and truffle mayo. It arrived in a house-baked, soft, bouncy bun with a buttery sheen. Inside, the patty and the layering of mushrooms added to the melody of flavours. The beef patty, medium well,

• FOODIE CORNER was chargrilled and smoky, thin and juicy. A smoosh of melted cheese and finely minced onion with mushroom were the high notes! Coleslaw with a heap of sweet, thin cucumber pickle was something your grandma would have made. To accompany this wholesome burger and coleslaw there was a generous portion of crunchy fries. Although you might have a temptation to double up the patty, like some other places offer, a single patty is more than sufficient here. Though Hudson is about classic burger options like chicken and beef, this is one place that gets vegetarian patties right too. People who want to be a part of the game but are not into meat can opt for the Beet Beast featuring beetroot patty, feta cheese, olives, tomato and walnuts! And, if you want to catch all your favourite sporting action but are not in the mood for a burger, there’s plenty more to choose from on the menu from steaks to roasts and sumptuous desserts. Now taking a departure from the burgers and putting across another thing that’s best at Hudson. Its sports-centric vibe. With screens throughout the space — Hudson can easily come out on top for match viewing. The seating gives you enough privacy to enjoy games with friends and it’s also spacious enough to accommodate large groups together. The music is subtle which means no match commentary will be lost in between. With 2022 being a very special football occasion in Qatar, male and female sports fans can easily head to Hudson to have some fun — it’s the epicenter of sports fanaticism. With loud energy and no demands on wardrobe — this is the place to sport the jerseys! ✤

fter food and drinks, one of the most important considerations whilst picking a lounge or bar for a night out with friends is its ambience. And the most stunning ones need to score big on both. There’s always something special about sitting somewhere beautiful in terms of views, lighting and the colour scheme of the interior. A well-designed space goes a long way towards a good time. And with La Vista 55 really taking off with a live music band playing, there’s never been a better time to try out one of country’s upbeat, lit places. The moment you exit the elevator on the 55th floor of the hotel, a huge Cuban-inspired art mural welcomes you with its vibrant colours. A fusion of exciting atmosphere and intricate flavours of vintage Havana brings Cuba to Doha. The dark interior, paired with a dash of pop art and neon colours, exudes a warm moodiness with amber walls, burgundy velvet booths and a view of the tall skyline from every inch of the bar and lounge. Murals here and there adorn the space throughout. Turn right from the reception and the first thing you see is a photo booth space featuring colourful wings. La Vista takes you on quite a journey of ambience with food and drinks to give you wings for the night. La Vista 55 takes up the 55th and 56th floors of the hotel. The upper deck serves up a more austere ambience and multicourse fare — the view gets better and better — and is spacious enough for a sizeable crowd. But if you’re into sitting in front of the band whilst sipping some drinks and eventually taking to the dancefloor, the more informal level of the space, the lower floor, makes a lasting impression. fact magazine

• LOUNGE LIFE Now the food: the menu is well curated with authentic speciality tapas that satisfy your cravings for mouth-watering Papas Rellenas. I ordered some Chupetas de Pollo (Latino glazed chicken drumsticks with hot mango chutney sauce), and Nachos Cargados (corn tortilla chips, with cheese sauce, a handful of jalapenos, sweetcorn, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole). The chicken drumsticks were very tender with salt and pepper and the pairing of mango sauce giving a kick of sweetness with sourness at the same time. Whilst the nachos, that are generally considered very basic, were uplifted with sour cream and guacamole. Perfect light starters to be paired with enhanced beverages. I also went on to try the lettuce and beans salad with guasacaca sauce. Fresh to the core and extravagant on the taste buds. If I had to define my experience of non-stop dancing with the live Cuban band at La Vista 55, it has to be Cuban-Caribbean meets hippie mid-modern. It’s hard to pin point in the more-is-more space. Every wall is a gallery here. ✤

taying fit is of the essence in order to keep healthy. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to focus on well-being and fitness. For the last few months eating out and no gym have been a kind of a thing. With so many events happening round the clock, I have barely had time for some physical activity to keep myself energetic, refreshed and refuelled. And so, when I got some time off for the festive season — there’s nothing I wanted more than to head to Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel and be part of their fitness regimen. The Sheraton Fitness Center offers fitness classes, an outdoor pool, beach access and on-site spa services. An unusually hot day during this time of the year turned out to be favorable for me to get in the pool and enjoy the waters to the max. The outdoor pool featured loungers, a shaded children’s pool, which was absolutely bliss for anyone doing hardcore swimming without the fear of someone coming in between and disrupting the flow, and a Jacuzzi overlooking the Arabian Gulf. I’ve never been great at swimming but the attempt to get better takes extra energy owing to the constant clumsy movements of arms and legs. The co-ordination has always been the hard part for me. But lifeguards at the pool really guided me in terms of the technique. Apart from professional trainers in the pool, since Sheraton is family centric hotel, I also spotted many dads teaching their kids to swim and helping them cope with the water. After an hour-and-a-half at the pool, I headed to the beach to enjoy some nature as I breathed in the fresh air with picturesque Doha’s skyline in the background. The water was cold but the sun quite complemented the contrasting effect. This had to be one of the cleanest beaches in Doha. If you think I just rested on the lounger for brief tanning — you’re wrong. I went all in, trying to float and swim in the salty water before it was time for my massage appointment at the Fitness Center.

Between gyms with luxe amenities and instructors, Sheraton Fitness offers something for everyone aiming for a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re training for a race or trying to incorporate more cardio into your regimen, the friendly and knowledgeable instructors are there to help in the gym. The membership gives the benefits of accessing the fitness centre, resort, and fitness classes along with complimentary non-motorised watersports rental. There are also certain discounts available on food and beverage, massage treatments, salon services and laundry. After a day of swimming, especially after a long break from physical activity, massage was really important to release stress from my muscles and relax the body. I was advised to take Swedish Massage with lavender oil to help reduce stress and ‘to improve sleep’ and I can happily say that the massage was deep enough (I love deep tissue massages), and left me feeling so much more relaxed. My masseuse, Ganga, not only managed to strike the perfect balance between intensity and comfort, but her rolls, kneads and strokes lulled me into an extremely Zen state. Post firm-yet-delicate, enjoyable-yet-probing massage, I headed to Hatha Yoga, The Transformation by Vishnu. Physical postures are just one aspect of it. Many people confuse it with exercise but Vishnu explained the class before delving deep into its benefits and the innumerable postures the body can take and the meaning of hatha — balancing the sun and moon in you. Starting with deep breathing exercises (pranayama) followed by asana (yoga postures), mudra (hand gestures) and finally cleansing techniques to de-stress the mind and body. If you’re looking for a fitness escape, Sheraton Fitness Center is a great place to go. You’ll feel energised and mentally and physically fit. ✤ GO: CALL 4485 4600 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A RESERVATION.

HISTORY For more than 90 years, since its launch in 1927 as one of the first Ritz-Carlton hotels in the USA, The Newbury has always been more than just a luxury hotel and a beloved landmark in the city. Rather it has given visitors a place to call home, and somewhere to make unforgettable memories. The Newbury, located in the premier shopping and dining neighbourhood of Back Bay, has served as a cherished and iconic destination, welcoming Boston residents, world leaders, dignitaries and celebrities alike. It’s no wonder that many guests return over and over to experience its timeless charm.

NEW STYLE Leveraging the talent of three world-renowned designers, the building has been thoughtfully transformed to offer 286 guestrooms and suites with 16,000sq/ft of spectacular event spaces, signature dining experiences and a reimagined entrance. The extensive restoration and revitalisation of the hotel pays homage to its rich history, while also incorporating modern luxury and carefully curated guest experiences. The main entrance was relocated from Arlington Street to Newbury Street and visitors are welcomed into an elegant, landscaped terrace plaza, which pays a visual nod to The Public Garden that lies adjacent. Dramatic window awnings and a new lighting design enhance the hotel’s neoclassical façade. In creating the new entrance and public spaces, internationally recognised architect Jeffrey Beers sought to invoke the spirit of the building’s heritage by incorporating many historic details, including the original cobalt blue chandeliers from the main dining room. 84

LIGHTS, CAMERA…ACTION! Shaima al-Tamimi, a Yemeni-East African visual storyteller, speaks about her recently screened documentary Don’t Get Too Comfortable shown at Ajyal Film Festival. that these linguistic and thoughtful abilities step from the same creative place where some rather ingenious proclivities ferment. Through the mediums of photography, film, and writing — and via a deeply-rooted documentary approach — Shaima merges historical and family archives with present-day portraits and visuals to create vivid narratives, offering a unique perspective on the life stories of her subjects. She speaks to FACT about what drives her inspiration and how Ajyal Film Festival plays a role in providing a platform to young filmmakers. You explore themes like migration, identity and culture via your documentaries. What drives you to this specific genre? What’s your inspiration? A big part of the work that I do stems from my own reality. I find that one can truthfully tell stories with so much depth and authenticity if they have gone through certain experiences. This is a great chance to take ownership of the narrative when you express it from an insider’s perspective. Tell us about your background in filmmaking? My background in filmmaking is very experimental and one that I’ve learned a lot from. As a visual artist, it’s important for me to push boundaries in the various formats of storytelling. This one, with my film, for example, fused different techniques within utilising archival footage, parallax animation techniques and video. It was fun and exciting to work on additionally because I collaborated with Mayar Hamdan, who not only comes from a similar background but also filled in the artistic gaps that enrich my experience in experimentation.

S

haima al-Tamimi, a Yemeni-East African visual storyteller based in the GCC has navigated this high-wire act to make a living as a storyteller, centring the narratives of those traditionally on the outside into the mainstream. She has explored themes relating to patterns and impacts of migration, identity and culinary culture. Shaima has a baroque way of talking that is spectacularly aligned to her way with a clashing style of storytelling in one deep, well-done take of high and low, past and present, deep and shallow. Such ability never gets lost in translation on the cinema screen. What’s clear is 88

fact magazine

How do you think festivals like Ajyal play a role in providing a platform to young filmmakers? To start with, it’s always important for local platforms to exist and offer filmmakers the opportunity to share their stories with the community. My experience with Ajyal was actually a lot more endearing than, say, going to the Venice Film Festival [where her film was also shown] purely because I was showcasing my film to an audience that could resonate with topics like migration and dealing with generational trauma from a regional perspective. Venice was amazing, of course, but the audience was different and that also helped open their eyes on what Yemenis and people in a diaspora from war-torn countries go through.

Don’t Get Too Comfortable also won the Bronze Tanit Award at the 32nd edition of Carthage Film Festival, 2021 in Tunis. Tell us about your documentary and how it all came together. My documentary was actually the result of my fellowship at the Magnum Foundation in 2020. It came together as I was delving deep into the question of ‘how am I going to tell this story truthfully?’ I gave myself a few brainstorming exercises and actually ended up journalling on paper, I wrote pages and pages of what I felt was very heavy to me and that process helped me unpack a lot of emotions and realisations. It organically turned into a film from then on. As a filmmaker and a storyteller, what’s your creative process? I work a lot with archival material and memory, that’s usually the first thing I approach in most projects I work on. I find that going to the past for answers or even to ask more questions helps frame how I want to go forward with things. How do you think the film industry was affected by Covid at large? Did it affect your creative energies? In my case it actually helped pivot my work to the current format, it allowed for more solitary time to self-reflect and go really deep. It was a bit challenging editing the project remotely, but we worked it out in the end. What’s next for Shaima Al-Tamimi? The film is still in its early festival tour stages, so there’s a lot of work to be done with regards to promoting outside. I have a few art commissions lined up as well and have been taking the time to also process everything around me. Alhamdulillah, I am grateful for everything and everyone who supported and cheered me through a difficult time. ✤ fact magazine

BIG SCREEN Arcane Need to Know:

Arcane is a 2021 animated series based on the League of Legends online multiplayer video game by Riot games. In it we follow two orphaned sisters as they navigate the treacherous and dangerous world they live in, as the series progresses more characters are introduced creating an intricate and exquisite story.

Creators: Christian Linke and Alex Yee Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Purnell, Katie Leung, Kevin Alejandro, Jason Spisak

Why Is It Worth Watching?

In this series we follow Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and her sister Jinx (Ella Purnell) as they navigate the growing unrest between the utopian and rich upper city of Piltover and the poor undercity of Zaun. With different ideologies and views of the future, each character has a unique perspective, and we are shown the points of view of various characters throughout the show. This gives the audience a deep and unique insight into the root of this story and this world's various issues. The character development is also marvellous, from the well thought out designs to the complex personalities. Not to mention the absolute masterpiece that is the animation and art style of the show. From the incredible use of colour and form to the absolutely mesmerising backgrounds, you are truly immersed in the show as you watch the fluid and dazzling movements of each character. The soundtrack is also excellent, with each song truly encapsulating the intense moments and successfully making the audience feel the passionate emotions displayed on screen. It is the ultimate binge show, after starting it you’ll surely be unable to stop watching.

“From the incredible use of colour and form to the absolutely mesmerising backgrounds, you are truly immersed in the show as you watch the fluid and dazzling movements of each character.”

The Power of the Dog Need to Know:

Set in 1925, The Power of the Dog is a Western drama that follows a ranch owner, his brother and his new wife. And the cruelty and jealousy that festers due to repressed emotions and loneliness. This is a truly fascinating movie with complex themes and characters.

Creators: Jane Campion Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, Kodi Smit-McPhee

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The series follows Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), a cruel and rough ranch owner, and his brother George Burbank (Jesse Plemons). After George’s marriage to widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst), Phil directs much of his aggression towards her and her awkward and stiff son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). This is not the easiest movie to watch, it is not as digestible and simple as many current movies. However, this is what makes it so incredible, you must read between the lines and the actions of each character to truly understand each person's intentions and thoughts. The eeriness and unsettling nature of the movie sets it up as a thriller without the classic parts of the genre. The incredible cinematography of vast empty land as well as awkward angles and silences are all perfectly placed to further the plot. This is a visually stunning movie as well as very interesting, as the audience tries to carefully complete the puzzle of the story. The perfect watch for deep thinkers who enjoy analysing deeper meanings in their films. It is most definitely worth a watch if not for deeper meanings, then certainly for the spectacular acting and visuals.

Brightside By The Lumineers

Barn By Neil Young & Crazy Horse

It’s hard to believe these guys have been going 17 years since founding members Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites began performing together in Ramsey, New Jersey, USA. They have a massive fanbase but, surprisingly, some people still haven’t heard of them. So, here’s a tip for you. Before you dig into Brightside, which is due for release on January 14, take a listen to 2012’s Ho Hey, it’s a track almost everyone will know, a real catchy tune that featured in the film Silver Linings Playbook. The title track of the new album, Brightside, starts with the question “What does love mean to you?” and there are certainly some cute answers. Wesley’s voice is beautiful and pure but despite the seemingly upbeat message, there is still a hint of hopeless melancholy borne out in lyrics such as: “You were tired of Tacoma, I was tired of believing we were right.” A standout is Birthday which is clearly a message for our current troubled times. It’s about carrying on and recognising that there are still people being kind to each other, still people wishing each other a Happy Birthday. And pandemic still in mind, of Big Shot Wesley told themusicuniverse.com that we’re all big shots in our own story and, now, we’ve all been humbled. The Lumineers, for all their popularity, remain humble indeed and true to their folky roots, though their music does seem to have taken a darker turn on both this and their last album III. But Brightside is definitely a grower the more you listen to it.

Announced in October 2021 and released in December, Barn is the follow-up to 2019’s Colorado and it distinctly illustrates the waning of the veteran rocker’s voice. That said, the choice of songs and the reliable backup from the skilled musicians of Crazy Horse, work well to both support and emphasis strengths. The opener, Song Of The Seasons, features the familiar harmonica gently leading into a beautifully lyrical tale of time passing and love as natural as nature “We’re so together in the way that we feel, that we could end up anywhere.” Elsewhere, Neil Young, ever the activist, takes some not some not so subtle digs at some of his fellow Americans. Change Ain’t Never Gonna calls out climate change deniers. Canerican is a short and sweet tale of changes coming to America “I am all colours, all colours is what I am, stand beside my brother for freedom in this land.” And Human Race is back to climate change “Where are all the children going to run and hide? The children of the fires and floods?” An apocalyptic siren call accompanied by screaming guitar. But there are also love songs and nostalgia aplenty. And overall, this album, is decidedly easy listening. Even with the political messages, it sounds like a group of old friends who know each other very, very well getting together to jam. And more power to them for that.

By Sarah Moss Sharply observed and bleakly comic, The Fell is a departure by Sarah Moss from Summerwater and Ghost Wall into a zone of relatedness and present times. She narrates the story of Kate, a woman in 2020 who slips out of her garden and turns up the hill, tired of pandemic gloom and breaking quarantine rules. Sarah explains beautifully how Kate cannot take it anymore. The story takes a turn when she falls and slips and what begins as a furtive walk of breathing air, turns into a mountain rescue operation. The novel is a story about kindness and compassion, what the place has become post Covid and what one must do to survive and live. This is a novel to be gulped in one sitting. The characters she chooses are easy to empathise with. Their small hardships can be a little overwhelming.

The Greeks: A Global History

By Robert Beaton If you’re an avid ancient history fan, this is for you. The Emeritus Professor at King’s College London pens an extensive history of the Greeks from antiquity to present day. The book covers a lot of topics and territories with clarity, managing to focus on Greek identity throughout. He explains how the Greek language serves as a guardian for the accomplishments of Greek people. Robert mentions Greek philosophies and their lifestyle and draws a parallel between current times and the past. “In April 1821, for the first time in centuries, Greeks were ready to seize their political destiny and take their future in their own hands,” he writes as he expands on the Danubian principalities. He also touches on the reason men from all over Europe were drawn to fight for Greece. This is an interesting book to keep you engrossed with facts, figures and realities of the past in detail. fact magazine

en’s and women’s pieces are cut with Dsquared2 codes: combat pants with patch pockets, the Canadian flag as a canvas for T-shirts and sweatshirts, jeans and chinos tagged and illustrated in the same way a student’s yearbook is signed by classmates after graduating. Upholstery florals—like those you see in grandma’s home— weave nostalgic romance with more attitude pieces of oversized sweatshirts, flocked velvet denim overalls, and a camouflage print created from tag style spray-painted design. Her collection has a youthful, feminine vibe. Peach and skyblue crepe tailored boyfriend jackets and loose cropped pants, tweed-style jackets and miniskirts and the wallpaper flower print in shirts and silk dresses. These looks, plus bralettes in crystals are complemented with super bleached wide leg jeans and denim shorts, red-and-black check skirts, a leopard print jacket, its spots spray painted. Hand knitted crochet hats and scarves, and feminine accessories contrast with graffiti platformsoled, chunky-heel, lace-up boots, and padded strap sandals.

Designed to be worn layered, the men’s collection explores military style with streetwear and grunge. Standout outerwear is accented in detail and hand feel: a trench covered in graffiti, papery fine nylon jackets and shirts. Hybrid pants are constructed from bleached chino fabric mixed with jersey, as are denim and sweatshirt hooded jackets. Camouflage patterns are created from stripes and graffiti tagging on cotton canvas pants and jackets, and tie-dye appears on sweatshirts. Denim is bleached out, or in dark washes embellished with drawings and words or hand-painted in limited edition. Evening wear also has a laidback approach, tuxedos are worn with T-shirts and jackets. Dsquared2 sneakers feature mixed materials or are graffitied to form part of the new shoe collection. ✤ fact magazine

What We’re (Still) Talking About Farewell to ‘The Arch’

Climate Crisis

RIP Eko

This month saw the passing of a vital social activist and emblem of freedom in South Africa. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, hailed as a national hero, relentlessly fought for human rights in a tumultuous era both in the southern state and internationally. He helped repeal apartheid and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984 for his efforts to achieve restorative justice for the black community. The much-loved cleric, known affectionately as The Arch, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the 1990s but never lost his smile and

Typhoon Rai has been marked as one of the most fatal natural disasters seen in the past year, but is it really all that natural? Many experts blame the climate crisis for the catastrophe and see it as a sign of a turning tide. With the continuing discussions on the climate, from COP26 and the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports on irreversible damage, deteriorating habitats, evaporating lakes and melting glaciers, this typhoon comes at the pinnacle of a year of disaster after disaster, sign after sign that governments and politicians are falling behind.

In the last week or so an endangered Malayan tiger named Eko died at Naples Zoo, Florida. At just eight, he was not old. Nor was he sick. No, he died of stupidity. That of a man who worked for a cleaning company, and should not have been anywhere near the tiger, who stuck his arm through the bars allowing Eko to grab him. Eko was shot dead. The man is in a critical condition but his victim, and, yes, we use that term advisedly, is dead! Sadly, this sort of event is becoming more frequent. In 2016, gorilla Harambe was killed after a child fell into his

infectious sense of fun. South Africa held a week of commemorative events to celebrate his life with joy, colour, music and reflection. For us, his passing feels like almost the end of an era personified by Archbishop Tutu, Nelson Mandela and their ilk. We can’t help but wonder what they would make of the confused and often embattled nation South Africa has become.

Despite all this, there is still much corruption and under-the-table deals that disregard the negative effects they might have on global warming. It feels as though despite all the international debates and cries for substantial action, we are still stuck with unchanged habits and a lack of care. Our only hope is that disasters like Typhoon Rai and many others in 2021 might ignite 2022 as a year of the much-needed turnaround to get ahead of the climate crisis.

enclosure. The primate seemed to be protecting the toddler, but he was shot anyway. And in March 2021 a man was arrested after sneaking his two-yearold into the elephant enclosure at San Diego Zoo just managing to escape as a giant beast charged at them. The ethics of zoos aside, when will people realise these are wild and, potentially, dangerous animals and leave their stupidity at the gate?!
