JUST LIKE STARTING OVER

“It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.” Eleanor Roosevelt

T

he holidays have been fun. And what better time than after a good break for a post-holiday planning mission. “One of these days, I’m going to get organised…” These were the immortal cinematic words of a young Bob DeNiro in Taxi Driver and, while we aren’t contemplating any Mohican-bearing madness, we are endorsing the idea of prioritising putting things in order, both personally and professionally. Procrastination is so last summer. Our cover story maps out pragmatic solutions for optimal functioning and organisational efficiency with a series of articles that suggest good ideas, provide simple strategies for decluttering and connect you with the right professionals to help you implement these ideas. I was lucky enough to meet with local bloggers and organisational experts to give me hands-on help with our cover story. We’ve tackled home order with our ‘Declutter Delegation’ piece; a systematic approach to sorting out your living spaces, and we’ve addressed the after-holiday academic blues with a ‘Back-To-School Blueprint’ for your kids. For those with some closet issues on dumping out-of-fashion outfits, our ‘Be a Wardrobe Warrior’ section should get you racking up brownie points for a leaner, meaner wardrobe. If you’ve landed a new job, ‘The Career Without The Chaos’ will leave you primed and prepared to make the best of your career move, including some invaluable reading material to start you off on the fight foot and in the right frame of mind. Just because it was the holidays, don’t think we slacked off here at FACT. The regular features you love are all in this edition, including restaurant reviews of Sel & Miel, Sofra and Cucina. These detailed and delightful culinary experiences are yours to savour this month. We’ve got arts and culture to absorb, and if the City Rides Audi review doesn’t get your motors racing, nothing will. In this edition’s Staycation supplement I take three days and two nights to review that Qatar-based bastion of luxury and hospitality, The Sheraton Doha, sampling fine food, indulgence-inducing amenities and luxurious accommodation at the city’s first five-star resort. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it. On that note, I’m getting back to work. Good magazines don’t create themselves.

SUPERFRUIT SUSTAINABILITY Brazilian and Arabic Açaí partnership plants 1,500 trees in the Amazon.

I

n an important collaborative initiative to help mitigate climate change through the reforestation of deforested areas, Tropicool Açaí and Superfruits, of which Qatar’s own Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Thani is co-owner, has replanted 1,500 seedlings of native Amazonian and fruit trees in Mâncio Lima, Brazil. The replanting of these 1,500 seedlings sprouted from a partnership between the company and SOS Amazônia, entitled ‘Faça Florescer Floresta’ (loosely translated as ‘Make It Bloom Forest’.) The efforts ensure the restoration of 15 thousand square miles of the Amazon. An agreement made with families of the region includes the purchase of seedlings and preparation of the agroforestry systems method. This is just the first step of a project that will recur regularly. In the partnership, Tropicool Açaí and Superfruits will plant a tree for every 10 litres of açaí sold in the world. Present at the initial planting, Sheikh Mohammed, a member of 8

the Qatari royal family, clarified the importance of the initiative saying: "Our promise is to return to the Amazon what it offers us as raw material, and which we work to take to the whole world." Açaí berries are known as the most delicious member of the superfood pyramid. The Amazonian Forest areas are the main source of raw material for açaí bowls, ice cream and juices. Tropicool Açaí and Superfruits produces product via aseptic technology, making it possible to preserve the flavour and natural characteristics for up to 15 months without freezing the fruit. Properly packaged, the product can be transported over long distances, making it possible to share these super bowls with more than 50 locations across the GCC, Brazil and Mexico. ✤

The Declutter Delegation Home Is Where the Start Is

D

ecluttering a home can feel, at first, like an overwhelming task but ends up being an intensely rewarding labour of love. Once you’ve completed the exercise, your personal spaces will only contain things that serve you. There are simple rules and logical processes around keeping what you need. We’ve organised our thinking on the subject with a little help from our decluttering guru in Qatar, Bibi Boshoff, who mapped out a basic decluttering delegation of tasks for your home. Having a simple and systematic approach is fundamental. Bibi suggests that the most important foundation for this mission is to get four separate boxes and label them under the following categories: keep, donate, trash and relocate. Designation of these boxes and allotting items to them is key as you move from room to room. Apply logic to the lounge Your lounge or living room takes a beating daily. It’s your high-traffic area and for that reason needs regular attention to decluttering. Book a day to deal with literature and trinkets. Begin with bookcases and side tables. Completely empty them and review the items. Sort out any old mail or papers, and either throw away the junk or file the important paperwork. Dump magazines you don’t need and put the books back on the shelves

Don’t entertain chaos. Clear up your entertainment centre by sorting out the devices. Remove everything that is not connected to your home theatre. Store items like chargers, gadgets and gaming equipment close to the source. Toy story can be a cool kids’ movie or an ongoing saga of mess. Among your catalogue of kids’ toys just lying around, take stock of each, and gather up those that have seen better days for donation or recycling. If your kids still play with it, move it into a dedicated toy box space. Batten down the bathroom The bathroom should be a shrine to simplicity. Start by clearing your medicine cabinet, discarding expired skincare products, makeup and medication, and then return all items to be kept back to the cabinet. Place your most used items at eye level. Clean up the kitchen Clutter and the kitchen are often synonymous. The kitchen is a multi-purpose place of activity and for that reason, it often gets filled with unnecessary items. The key to decluttering the kitchen is to select one category of the item at a time. Pick three or four categories in total, like glassware or appliances, and then complete one category before moving on. Have a hard look at appliances. If you have limited space in your kitchen, appliances are more trouble to store than they’re worth. Test key appliances to check whether they still work. Immediately repair any non-working ones you still want, so they’re not just taking up space. Toss anything that you won't be using anymore. Those items you want that are not in use regularly, must be

• COVER STORY boxed and placed in a dedicated storage space. Throw out all your expired pantry items. Anything even a single day past its use-by date goes in the trash. Be ruthless. Decant leftovers and items like rice into labelled food storage containers for quick and easy access. Clean up your kitchen cupboard shelf space by separating and putting the most regularly used condiments and key necessities, such as your everyday spices and oil, for example, in front of less used items. The bedrock for peace of mind Baby steps are best for the bedroom. Begin by making the bed. Psychology dictates that when the bed looks pristine your mind is better equipped to make good decisions. Tackle vanity tables and beside stands next. Clear the drawers and use your four-box system to sort out the items in them. Don’t look and return, delegate to the boxes with clarity and conviction. Lose the useless papers, dry pens, expired bills, and items that really offer no value to you. Make sure you allocate secure dedicated spaces in a single defined drawer space or safe for your critical documents. Passports, divers’ licences, wills and insurance papers must all go into one space that doesn’t change. When it comes to sorting items, Bibi tells us the rule of thumb here is, if you haven't used it in a year, get rid of it. Try donating

Back-To-School Blueprint

A

ugust is always a second chance to begin the year. You come back fresh after the holidays looking forward to a clean-slated start to another year. To map out an holistic approach to beating backto-school blues and organising your kid’s routine, FACT met with Elmira Kahrobaie, a full-time mum and influencer based in Qatar. Being the best parent you can be, begins with being your ultimate you Everything starts with you and, once you start practising and learning how to organise yourself, you can implement that in every aspect of your life, leading and motivating your kids by your good example. Most of us struggle with not having enough time. Elmira’s biggest advice is always to “wakeup early and go to bed early”. This not only increases the quality of your wellbeing but also gives you the opportunity to start your day a little more slowly and with more focus. Giving yourself the chance to wake up before your kids allows you time to enjoy the few minutes of peace before the mayhem commences. It is particularly important to find some time during the busy week for yourself. Self-care will enable you to recharge and ensure that you are pouring from a full cup. Pick a day and a time and indulge in a little self-pampering, whether it’s a game of squash, face mask or just unplugging and reading a book. 18

• COVER STORY

Schooling yourself on home economics If you’re a home executive, Elmira is a firm believer that you are not meant to do everything every day. When it comes to cleaning, remember that each day is not a spring-cleaning mission. Try to organise and do one of the main chores daily. For example, laundry is one of those duties that you may need two days to complete, so try to plan it for the end of the week, so on the weekend (when you have more time) you will be able to fold, iron and pack away. There are certain tasks that will need daily effort, like mopping or vacuuming. Make these daily tasks short and simple. Elmira’s favourite tip is to always do the dishes at the end of the night, to avoid waking up to the task. Organising your ‘mini me’ When it comes to organising children, there are some common challenges with re-establishing routine after a year of the pandemic. A go-to method of following up on things with your child is to use a checklist. Your personal expectations and school expectations must be marked clearly on this checklist. This helps a lot with instilling responsibility and will encourage your children to become organised. Elmira’s top tip here is to let your child choose a day where they can enjoy rewards. Set a budget for them so that they can buy anything the money will afford. This way they learn about effort and reward as well as how to budget their finances. Is very important to highlight your expectations and goals in the upcoming academic year. Start by motivating your child to focus on the areas that need to improve. Make it fun by putting those tasks as priority and rewarding their progress. Remember you are not a teacher. Separate this role from yourself as much as possible. Try to keep the relationship as it is. As a mum or dad, you are always there to support and remind your children of their 20

goals and assist them by being present. Balancing learning at home, remote schooling and classroom attendance is easiest when you set the easier tasks for home learning and the more challenging ones for the classroom. The key is to keep your child motivated with praise, often reminding them that these COVID-related interruptions are temporary. Children and adults perform best in any task for about 20 minutes. When home learning is in progress, use a visible clock to keep track of time. When the task is completed well, you can reward them with an extra five minutes of video games or whatever it is that they enjoy doing. Ask for feedback from the teacher as often as you can, to help to set boundaries for your kids. During summer vacations keep reminding them of what they did well in the previous academic year. Appreciating and expressing how proud we are of them is a great platform to then address the topics that require improvement and how they need to keep practising. There are many great applications that motivate and help children to play and learn. GO: FOR MORE PEARLS OF WISDOM AND MOTIVATION FOLLOW ELMIRA ON INSTAGRAM @ELMIRASWORLD

Be a Wardrobe Warrior

W

ardrobe clutter can overwhelm you. Sometimes your clothing range needs a dressing down, and not just with words but actions. FACT sat with personal stylist and image consultant Juliana Heide for some professional wardrobe organisation hacks. Ever feel that you have a tonne of clothing and nothing to wear? Feeling bogged down because most of your clothes don’t fit right, don’t match or are so last season? When it comes to clothes, we tend to think that the more we hold, the more choices we have, but in fact, the opposite is true. Too many clothes become overwhelming and can make getting dressed a chore. The trick to a stress-free wardrobe clean is breaking down the process and focusing on the main actions. Here are some easy steps to help you sort everything, figure out what you really need, and keep the pieces you truly appreciate. Define your style Purging without a plan is just going to lead to poor decisions, or you’ll purge and organise only to end up cluttered and disorganised in a couple of months. The first step is to start thinking about what your style is and keep this vision in mind when paring down. Ask yourself these three questions. What type of clothing you always feel comfortable in? What pieces do you wear on repeat all of the time, and why? What type of clothing suits your lifestyle?

Word of caution: we can often get caught up in defining our style for our fantasy life and not our real life. Consider clothing that matches your personal style and lifestyle. Try sorting clothing into five main categories: (1) active – working out and going to the gym clothes, (2) daily – running errands and day-to-day clothes, (3) work – office attire, for meetings or if you have a corporate job, (4) going out – entertainment-style clothing, to go to the movies, girls’ night out, date nights, special events, and (5) lounge wear – clothes you wear around the house. Once categorised, ask yourself how you usually spend the day. Which two are your primary ones? Those need to represent the majority of your wardrobe and occupy the biggest space. Categories help you put your wardrobe into perspective. When you realise you spend 10% cent or less of your days in going-out attire, it won’t make sense to have more than that portion of your wardrobe dedicated to them. Purge your clothes Grab five boxes and divide your clothing into: keep, toss, sell, donate and customise piles. Interrogate your wardrobe piece by piece and ask yourself a couple of questions about each item such as ‘Have I worn this in the last year?’ The majority of cluttered closets are the ‘just in case’ pieces, which we convince ourselves we might need for some upcoming event, or just a personal attachment to what we wore once, or even because it was an expensive item. Once a year goes by without wearing any of those items and they are still there sitting there untouched or with intact tags on, its time lose them. Your style changes. It’s not an easy task but ask

fact magazine

21

• COVER STORY yourself the following questions: Does it fit, and do I like the way that it looks on me? If you haven’t worn it in a year, you won’t next year. If I saw this in a store now, would I want to buy it? If you had an event right now on your calendar, would this piece be the one that you would wear? Get your wardrobe waxed Once all your clothing is purged it’s time to put it back in your wardrobe and organise your pieces. Before you do so, it's important to deal with those items you purged and prevent them from taking up space and potentially making their way back into your closet. Put the trash bag in your bin right away, get the charity bag to the donation point and get to work on the items that need to be cleaned or restored. Once ready to put everything from the ‘keep pile’ back in your wardrobe, organise them by use. Each piece serves a different purpose and provides a distinct use. Organising by type makes the most sense. Consider an ‘off-season wardrobe’ while you are delegating, but in the same spot. Designate wardrobe space to store clothes that you won’t be wearing in the next six months. When you are done, you’ll feel how freeing it is to have a neat and organised wardrobe filled only with pieces you absolutely love. The Career Without The Chaos

A

fter holidays, fresh opportunities often arise. As Qatar’s borders open, travel increases and trade picks up, there is an increased scope for career development. If you’re about to begin a new job, this is a chance to make a fresh start for yourself and a strong first impression on your new employer and colleagues. That means being well prepared and fully organised. We’ve identified four key organisational tips for starting your new job the right way. Maximise your transition time If you have the luxury of a week’s break between positions it’s the ideal opportunity to rejuvenate, re-energise and, of course, re-organise your battle approach. Consider taking a few days to get closer to nature, enjoy a camping trip or have an indulgent spa break. The getaway will do wonders for your spirit on day one of the new job. If there are any outstanding errands to complete, smash them all before you start the new position. You don’t want to be burdened by any personal tasks in your first month, so do a big grocery run, pay your accounts – whatever it takes to clear your calendar – for that all important first day. If you’re working from home in these pandemic times, make the effort to create a dedicated home office space, as noise and distraction free as possible, with an efficient fully equipped workstation, replete with a supportive and comfortable chair, a 22

neutral backdrop for video calls, notepad and pen, desktop and spare screen, good headphones, and some snack treats. Forewarned is forearmed Do your homework. Check out your colleagues’ LinkedIn profiles to gain insight into the corporate culture. Request or try to obtain a copy of the employee handbook before your first day so you can review it and know in advance what questions to ask. Consider researching your new company’s competitors, or testing out software you’ll be using on the job. Scrutinise social media. Review your new employer’s social media policy. Some organisations don’t care about employees posting on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or other social media sites during working hours. Others have policies that prohibit it. Scrutinise what seems to be acceptable before you start posting and vet your own social pages. Colleagues or the new boss might send you a friend request, so ensure what they can view is fit for public consumption. Check your privacy settings and be careful about who gets to see what. Left to your own devices? Enquire in advance if, on your first day, you're expected to use your own laptop, or have the option to use it. Some employers have Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) policies. The employee’s new clothes Whether you’re heading into the office or working remotely, clothes make more of a difference than you might imagine. First things first. When working the old-school way at the office, it’s important to go in armed with the appropriate attire information. If your new employer hasn’t advised you of a dress code you can enquire in advance what is ideal for your workplace or visit your organisation’s website page that talks about people and management to observe what the key players are wearing in the photos and gauge the style and level of formality, or check

out their Social Media spaces. Suit yourself. Nothing makes you feel ready for success more than a good business outfit. Spoil yourself in a professional way by suiting up with some new office threads. Whether it’s a formal or informal environment, the act of purchasing a dedicated outfit for the workplace will empower you. A crisp, well-tailored, highquality ensemble lets others know you mean business and contributes to your own commitment to the new position. The buck-naked stops here. Even if you’re working entirely from home, apply the principles listed above and get into a routine of wearing office-appropriate attire every workday. Like a Samurai warrior preparing armour for battle, the ritual act of putting on an outfit every morning before work will adjust your mindset to work mode, and help differentiate home time from office hours Read all about it Making the best possible start at a new job is about evolving your personal brand. By expanding your vision and enhancing your knowledge base you’ll attain the ideal kick-starter for your orientation phase. hat is it that sets a motor vehicle brand apart from its competitors? Is it the premium look and feel of its models that elevates it above its rivals? Is it the amount of space and comfort that the automobiles offer? Or is it purely based on the technology and performance capabilities of their mechanical creations? In truth, it is all of these traits that distinguish a great brand from a good one, along with the professional attitude its representatives adopt towards its customers, ensuring they always have a positive experience. Audi is, without a doubt, one of these prestigious brands. For over a century, this German-based car manufacturer has been creating an outstanding lineage for itself, developing a global fanbase and attracting millions of happy patrons worldwide. This month, FACT was given the opportunity to test drive the new Audi S3, compliments of the fantastic team at Audi Qatar, an opportunity we immediately seized with both hands. The moment the all-new Audi S3 came into view, we were struck by its dynamic appearance and had to restrain ourselves from immediately jumping inside and setting off down the freeway. However, we were soon distracted by the finer design details of the exterior as we made our way around this impressive vehicle. A singleframe dominates the front end complete with large rhombus-patterned grille and distinctive air inlets. The fact magazine

• CITY RIDES Matrix LED headlights are aggressively shaped and contribute toward the S3’s confident demeanour. The exterior mirrors have a sporty shape to them and add a touch of bling to the car with their aluminium finish. The shoulder of the body extends prominently from bonnet to boot, whilst the areas below are curved inward, a new design element from Audi that has placed more attention on the wheel arches. The vehicle’s seamless rear finish is accentuated by the stylish lip spoiler, with all elements coming together harmoniously. The sporty attitude of the all-new S3 flows from the exterior into the interior, where we were greeted by a driver focused cockpit. All materials, trimmings and finishes are of an exceptional quality and the abundant comfort and space on offer added greatly to this already impressive experience. All the controls and instruments are perfectly positioned and, along with the superbly designed steering wheel, ensure that the driver has everything she or he may need at any time. The sportiness of this car is once again accentuated, this time by the distinctive air vents that form a single unit with the instrument cover. In the centre of the instrument panel sits a 10.1-inch MMI touch display with MMI Navigation Plus, all of which come as standard in the new S3. This system recognises letters entered by hand and provides acoustic feedback. If that is not enough, the infotainment can also be voice-controlled using natural language, a feature we found to be exceptionally useful when out on the road. We also found plenty of room on offer in the rear, with ample head, shoulder and leg room for three passengers. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 325 litres, a volume that can be increased to 1,145 litres with the rear bench folded down. Finally, it was time to get the new S3 out onto the tarmac and we were soon all nodding at each other in appreciation at the sound of the inline three-cylinder engine. This sturdy sounding engine is coupled with a six-speed manual transmission that allows the vehicle to produce a maximum power output of 81kW at 5,500rpm and a maximum torque of 200Nm at 2,000 to 3,000rpm. This combination allows the S3 to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 10.3 seconds, as well as to offer an electronically limited top speed of 210km/h. As we made our way along the streets, our appreciation for this vehicle grew as we experienced all its capable performance features. The electromechanical steering with speeddependent power assist allows for super smooth navigation, whilst the dual-circuit brake system with diagonal split and hydraulic brake assist, ensures you are always in complete control of the driving experience. The driver assist system is yet another example of Audi’s technical superiority, boasting an array of assistance and safety features designed to keep you and your loved ones safe at all times. All of this combined with excellent traction control and the general responsiveness of the S3 provided us with one memorable test drive. If you’re in the market for a technologically superior, highperformance, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing premium motor vehicle, we would recommend you try the S3. ✤ GO: CALL AUDI CENTRE QATAR ON 4445 2375 FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO BOOK A TEST DRIVE OF YOUR OWN. 26

Headlined by the brand’s new AI EcoBubble range and developed to complement today’s lifestyle, make life easier for consumers and present greater convenience than ever before, the lineup will customise laundry processes and achieve desired results with less time, energy, and effort. Samsung’s Add Wash, EcoBubble and QuickDrive technologies form part of the lineup.

AI is the gateway to greater convenience Adding to Samsung’s reliable performance is artificial intelligence, which learns users’ behavioural patterns to recommend cycles. With AI Control, the new Samsung washer familiarises itself with user preferences and combines that knowledge with big data to provide the industry’s first automatic suggestion of wash cycles on its display. Paired with a simple user interface, AI Control eliminates the need for users to scroll through cycles or input their individualised settings each time. The AI Wash feature uses sensors to detect the laundry load’s weight and determine the optimal amount of water and detergent to dispense. Furthermore, the appliances are compatible with SmartThings, offering users control over laundry settings from their smartphone.

Valuable benefits The new AI EcoBubble range brings together Samsung’s most powerful technologies that cut down on wash times and energy consumption. Samsung’s revolutionary QuickDrive technology

cuts washing time by up to 50% and energy usage by 20%. The independently moving drum and backplate allows for more dynamic actions, cleaning garments more thoroughly in less time. Moreover, Samsung’s Digital Inverter Compressor adds to energy efficiency, utilising strong magnets for quieter and stronger performance while using less energy compared to a universal motor. The new washers also come with Samsung’s EcoBubble technology that maximises the effect of detergent by turning it into soft bubbles – allowing for faster penetration into fabrics, even in cold water. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.SAMSUNG.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, including where you are today, professionally, and what got you here? I was born in the heart of the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a northeast Italian area bordering the Adriatic Sea with beautiful vineyards that produce excellent white grapes. This area has proud culinary roots and I think my interest began there. I’m a member of the Italian Chef of the World organisation, representing Italian cuisine around the world. I am grateful to have been honoured as a Master Chef of Italian Cuisine by the Italian Academia Barilla, and have gained culinary success working in New York, London, Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai. What drove you to become a chef and where do you draw your inspiration from? I chose to become a chef when I realised what happiness and joy food can bring to people. Sharing my creations and connecting with others on this level is the main motivation for my career choice. I put my passion into creating exciting and fulfilling dishes for people. I would describe my style as traditional, selective and somewhat improvisational. When I need some ideas, I often take an inward-lookingout approach, which in my case comes right down to the ingredients. Simply adding one single new element can change the complexion of an entire dish. I enjoy culinary brainstorming with peers. My colleagues and other chefs often motivate me with fresh ideas and I regularly spend my time referring to books and magazines for the latest trends and contemporary creations. I believe that each seasonal ingredient is important in completing every unique and specialised dish, so I do not subscribe to

limitations in this area. My kitchen is an open book, and the ingredients are like new words waiting to be written every day. If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be and what would you make? Well, football is another passion of mine. In light of Italy’s recent triumph in the Euro Cup, I’m feeling extra patriotic. I would love to prepare a dish for the Italian national team. What is your signature dish and why? Please tell us about the development of the dish and what makes it so special, both to you and to your customers. Spaghetti Lobster is my secret weapon when it comes to dishing up taste bud artillery. This dish makes everybody happy and is an ensemble that I feel can be served on any occasion. It’s understated and comforting, yet carries the swag of freshcooked lobster meat. The method is simple, relying on a short list of honest ingredients that trigger wonderfully fresh flavours. It’s special but not pretentious and has sentimental meaning for me. I have beautiful memories of my childhood attached to it, as I grew up in Lignano Sabbiadoro, where lobster is a daily part of the place. It’s the quintessential summer food, associated with the seashore and bare feet, accompanied by nutcrackers and paper bibs. ✤

BORDERLESS FLAVOURS OF THE LEVANT

L

evantine cuisine is the true traditional food found in the Levant region, known in Arabic as the Bilad ash-Sham, or Land of the North, which today spans Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Southern Turkey and Cyprus. To understand this style of cooking, we have to appreciate its history and geography. It’s a section of the Middle East that circles from the Mediterranean Sea, passing by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and the Dead Sea. The food is seasonal and colourful, uses a lot of flowers and spices and is well known for its opulent aromas. Many of the dishes are similar but made in different ways. Sofra restaurant, which transforms the richness of traditional tastes into contemporary cuisines, is located on the ground floor of the Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery Hotel Collection. It is one of our favourite hotels in Qatar, so there was quite a bit of expectation before we got there. It did not disappoint. As we arrived at the hotel, we were ushered to the hallway that lets you feel the theme as you walk towards the restaurant reception, then we were warmly welcomed and led to our seats. We were immediately impressed with the interior, intricately adorned with the details of Qatari traditions. Images of dhow boats on the ceiling made a remarkable impression; one of the most stunning and unique ornaments I have seen. There is an outdoor seating area as well, so you can dine amidst the views of the Msheireb and Souq Waqif. The food started to come with a lavish selection of dips, salads and cold and hot mezza. With each plate, we were more and more impressed with the presentation. First to arrive was the beautifully served amuse bouche, a teaser of a portion, a plate on a stone. It is not only picture perfect, but also made our taste buds swoon with a playful mixture of lamb and creamy sauce. That was followed by Moutabel, chargrilled eggplant mixed with tahini, yoghurt, lemon juice and garlic. It was so flavourful! Tabbouleh with pomegranate was next, an even more enticing mixture of fine-cut parsley with tomato, onion, bulgur, fresh mint and lemon, complemented with dried pomegranate seeds and dressing. The

Lebanese Fattoush is a delightful discovery, displayed in a clear glass bowl and shaken in front of us before it’s served, is a mixture of fresh cut tomato, cucumber, capsicum, lettuce, mint leaves and fresh zaatar, with an exclusively made chef dressing. We continued on our Levantine feast with the staple hummus, and we were served with the Sofra Signature Hummus Selection, a palate-teasing offering of six chef-speciality versions. Each was so tasty but, in the end, I decided my favourite was the meat hummus, with seared minced lamb and pine nuts. It was so good, it disappeared in minutes. The hot mezze ensemble was started by Fried Shrimp Kibbeh; homemade kibbeh stuffed with minced shrimp, fresh coriander and pine nuts. This was followed by Fried Lamb Kibbeh with Cherry: minced lamb, pine nuts and onion in perfectly seasoned cherry sauce. Then, my favourite of the night was the tasty and flawlessly tendered sausages in a tangy pomegranate sauce called Soujok with Pomegranate Molasses. The flavours of the sauce and meat blended so well I could not have enough. The main courses started with a Grilled Meat Grand Platter which is made up of charcoal grilled Australian lamb chops, shish tawook, lamb kebab and kofta served with Khashkhash sauce, muhamura flat bread and steak fries. Savoury Chicken Shawarma arrived shortly after. Served with tasty homemade garlic sauce, cucumber, pickles and fries, it is easily understandable why it’s the crowd’s favourite, as we were told. Levantine desserts are truly amazing. Household masterpieces that have travelled through time and transport you from one tradition to another. So, for dessert, we chose Arabic style puff pastry, Umm Ali with fresh milk, nuts and Chantilly cream to go along with Arabic ice cream with pistachios. Sofra’s version of these desserts with the delicate pastry crust and the rich aroma attributed to the Arabic essences, made these sweet dishes even more of a treat. I have always believed that food is culture and the Levantine cuisine served at Sofra impeccably distorts the border lines to create a food journey with dishes that are similar in substance and yet different in interpretation. Each represents a tradition, and the experience at Sofra is a flavourful voyage that will transport you to the very heart of the region. It honours each area’s cuisines in a contemporary way but keeps them refined. It was so enriching that we have decided to go back for more, as the dining experience was more than a culinary exploration, it was a heartwarming celebration. ✤

G

one are the days where you had to hop on an aeroplane to enjoy wondrous Italian cuisine, with eateries in Doha serving every conceivable variety of pasta, risotto and much more. Of course, in the list of restaurants serving authentic Italian food in the city, Cucina is among the best. A warm, cosy place, with quaint rustic-style décor, red bricked and smelling of freshly-baked bread, it is transforming Qatar’s food landscape from its out-of-the way spot right in the centre of the city at the Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha Hotel. It is led by Chef Claudio Trovata. Actively involved in each order that leaves the kitchen, the chef pays tribute to Italian delicacies in the most delicate way, producing only flavoursome taste and aroma. On the menu? Melting burrata, artful plates of antipasti (caponata, caprese, insalata Napoletana, focaccia, bresaola…), cleverly prepared calamari, ravioli burro e salvia (spinach taking over the taste buds so subtly as the cream cheese dominates the bite) and a plethora of fresh pasta dishes. It also wouldn’t be erroneous to say that the restaurant seduces guests with its menu of fine Italian selected beverages. As I enter the venue, I spot cicchetti (quick bites) sumptuously displayed on the counter in front of the typical Italian pizza oven, and I just know instinctively that it’s going to be a wholesome noon. Amidst the warm, dim lighting I can feel the restaurant beat brimming with customers, even on a weekday, and music complementing the pan crackling in the open kitchen.

DINING DELIGHT •

I head towards the private dining area that is minimalistic in décor but speaks volumes of Italian heritage. The frames hanging on the wall, the wooden dining table with cloves of garlic, a huge cactus in the corner of the room and the presence of Chef Claudio that fills the air; it feels like I’m home, just not mine but rather Chef Claudio’s. Everything seems personal. There I am, with a menu of rustic Italian dishes in my hand and bewildered as to what to try, because everything on the carte looks delicious. It’s sparkling water with ice and lemon for me to start: something refreshing to balance the outside heat. I ask the chef to surprise me with the best he has to offer. And, oh my, that’s an opportunity you do not want to miss! A charred pile of hop-fried aubergine and other vegetables arrives accompanied by fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, sweet basil, Italian bread and air-dried thin, salted slices of beef (bresaola) in olive oil with a vampire-obliterating dose of subtle spices and a vibrant thwack of chilli. The starters are truly great. So great that even the well crusted calamari with zucchini and tartar sauce, that is my staple, takes a back seat. The calamari is good but I’m more interested in the sun dried tomatoes and beef on the other plate. I could happily continue building lunch like this, from the amazing starters. However, the main course is practically why I am here. Ravioli Burro e Salvia is al dente and the sauce is minimal to let the flavours of the spinach and freshly homemade pasta shine through. Paper-thin, sublimely al dente sheets draped prettily in a sticky, gritty mess of tomato sauce paired with cream cheese. At the heart of the menu, Chef Claudio’s pasta goes back to basics. I can taste the sploshing warm butter and I need another quick bite before I move on to the Risotto ai Porcini with mushroom that has just been served. Risotto is an Italian staple; you cannot visit an Italian restaurant and not order this. It would be an absolute ignominy! To my

surprise risotto is prepared here at Cucina with Acquerello rice. One of the only restaurants in Doha exclusively serving it, Acquerello (Italian for watercolour) is an aged Italian Carnaroli rice. Only grains that pass the 20 processing and selection steps become Acquerello. This is an obligatory risotto, but the mushrooms are also irresistible. In the perfect combination it’s like a friend – a savoury, butter- and cheese-loaded friend. Before I’m done with the savoury cut, I’m just leaning over to the other end of the table to grab a quick slice of Capricciosa pizza, because anchovies, olives and wholesome mushroom with lots and lots of cheese is just too tempting to not try. The base of the pizza is medium crust but well-done, just the way I like it. And, Cucina’s ingredients flow with the season and are all ethically sourced – further making this restaurant so special. Now the sugary delights. Cassata Siciliana and Torta Caprese are a ‘must try’ to end your meal. Cassata brings the traditional ricotta recipe infused with chocolate, raisins and dry fruits to give it a local taste. While Torta Caprese is more like a molten lava cake in a simple foodie version but healthier and vegan. Torta Caprese is prepared with almond flour and chocolate and served with vanilla ice cream. What stands out in this dessert is the absolutely perfect balance of sugar. It’s not very sweet, yet sweet enough to make your day! It’s divine. ✤

Food is an important part of the French culture. Throughout the various regions of France, dining is both a pleasure and a deep-rooted ritual, and each dish at Sel & Miel is a simple combination of flavours put together with passion and respect for each ingredient used. The experience genuinely let us live the brasserie’s motto ‘La joie de vivre’. We will be back for more, and we know exactly what we want! ✤

not easy to perfect—served in a white sectioned bowl, its rich aroma and flavours are undeniably tempting. The soft delicately chewy Burgundy snails took on the flavour of garlic and the spice sauce that they were drenched in. Next to the table was my favourite for this course, the Market Beet Salad, appealing to me mainly because of the creamy 95 grams of goat cheese with it. Most of the time, you don’t even see the goat cheese in a salad. The combination of dry and sweet beetroot makes it juicier and the succulent shavings of pear and walnut blended flawlessly. For our Les Plats and Les Poissons, we were instantly drawn to the sight of the C’ote de Boeuf, or the Ribeye steak, when it arrived. Cooked ‘medium’, as per our request, the taste was like heaven on earth, tender and juicy with a perfectly seared crust, every bite melts in your mouth with all its opulent flavours. It’s the best steak I’ve had, as far as I can remember, and was served with sweet roasted onion, garlic aioli and house truffle fries; its deliciousness more than words can say. The impeccably cooked salmon in herbs served with fresh fennel and asparagus was a very close second. It was followed by the Bouillabaisse, or Provencal Fish Stew, a delightful mixture of prawns, mussel, potatoes and fish of the day in a rich tomato-based sauce – a scrumptious ensemble of essences. The mains were served with the most amazing and tasty mashed potatoes I have tasted, literally no need for salt and pepper or any seasoning; and the green beans soaked in basil pesto and pumpkin seed crust are a revelation! Very simple and healthy, yet very tasty. And oh, did I mention the Ribeye steak? It was truly so excellent; it deserves another mention. Chef Glynn Trollip, who was handson and very busy as I could see through the open-kitchen window, checked on us and, among other compliments, I must have raved about the steak about a hundred times over. fact magazine

t’s no secret that the sweltering temperature, sun, dust and chlorine play havoc with your hydration and PH levels from top to toe. What a wonderful relief it was when Bioskinspa Doha invited me to their newly renovated premises to indulge in some innovative and exclusive treatments. Bioskinspa Doha pride themselves on their revolutionary treatments, combined with top-of-the-line machines to aid in their efficiency. On the menu there is something for any cosmetic concern you might face and most of the therapies are exclusive to the clinic. These results-driven treatments, courtesy of their exclusive products and developed in their laboratories in Switzerland and Italy by top dermatologists, are delivered by an exceptional team of therapists. It’s rare to find places that focus on skincare, weight loss as well as hair, with such dedicated programmes. The therapeutic spaces are light and designed to feel upmarket, clean and modern, reflecting the ahead-of-time innovation on offer. And the therapists are neatly dressed resembling nurses from another dimension. Here they mean business. I certainly do love over-the-top golden cappuccino experiences like the ones at The Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, but this is on another level. The first thing I am booked in for is the signature Instaglow treatment. A pure 24-carat gold mask is gently applied to the face and then melted onto the skin with a liquid nitrogen lamp, essentially freezing age in its tracks, and promoting silky smooth, young and revitalised skin through its firming, lifting and anti-ageing properties. It is a strange sensation to feel the inside of your skin. I am told by the therapist that this cryotherapy facial treatment outshines botox, minimises pore size and lightens the complexion.

• SPA & WELLNESS This treatment is only available at Bioskinspa Doha. If there was an award ceremony underway, I would most certainly pass as a golden statue glimmering amid the paparazzi flashes right about now. As we complete this luxurious affair, I glimpse in the mirror and notice that my skin already appears younger and smoother and feels plump and energised from the inside. My opulent beauty journey continues with a therapist named Nancy transporting me to the next treatment room. It is time to let my hair down. Blonde hair in the Middle East is the most difficult to maintain. The tap water, sun and dust destroy the ends and challenge the roots, combatting optimal growth. Hopefully, my less than luxurious locks will be saved with this Keratin Silk Infusion treatment. They start by steaming my tresses, optimising vitamin absorption into the follicles and scalp. They cool the skin with cold steam and apply a machine with red and green lights. The red stimulates blood circulation, while the green promotes hair growth. This experience is focused purely on rejuvenating and treating your hair, while using microelements to generate mist and warming it in accordance with the scalp and hair type. After all the different hot and cold applications and light therapy, the final result is instant. My hair is soft and glowing from root

to tip and restored to a glossy and bouncy state. I am sold! For the grand finale, my entire body is about to be transformed by a brand-new machine that only recently arrived in the country. The magic behind this technology is the three-inone science promoting the natural formation of nutrients, improving the tone and enhancing the aesthetic appearance of the skin from the neck down to the feet. Cue, the weird space suit! If no one had briefed me on the benefits of this treatment and just showed me this otherworldly outfit, I would have been in there already. With a combination of micro-electric shocks to the muscles and firm waves of pressure and heat throughout the bodysuit, the objective of this treatment is to break down stubborn fat that will pass through your sweat and urine within a few hours. Total time in the suit is 20 minutes and the intensity is increased in increments. Benefits include improving lymphatic drainage, toxin removal, reduction in cellulite and varicose veins, and total skin toning. It's an overall uncomfortable 20 minutes, but completely worth it. After the treatment, my body feels light and refreshed. It is recommended to try a package of a few sessions to fully reap the benefits in the long run. If you are a practical results-driven beauty connoisseur, I would definitely recommend Bioskinspa Doha for their wide range of targeted and innovative treatments. I head home feeling better, brighter, and bouncier than ever. And who couldn't do with a little bit of that? ✤

I

arrive at The Sheraton Grand Doha with a sense of anticipation. While I’ve visited here many times over my years in Qatar, this will the first instance where I’ve been a stayover guest. Normally I make the most of the fantastic recreational facilities and the renowned hospitality touchpoints, but this is going to be something special; two nights and two days at Qatar’s first landmark five-star resort and convention centre. Built in 1982, the iconic ‘Pyramid of the Gulf’, as the hotel has been affectionately dubbed due to its outstanding architectural design, stood alone for many years as the key feature of Doha’s cityscape. The project took pride of place while the rest of the city rose around it. Now, almost 40 years later, the Sheraton Grand Doha remains a firm favourite among locals and tourists alike. I can’t wait to get better acquainted with it. I’ll be staying in a Club Room for my two-night sojourn and I have an agenda filled with great meals and experiences to soothe and rejuvenate body and mind. I arrive with a laptop and a longing for some rest and recreation after a hard week. My mind is torn between the call of duty for this article and a very real need for some down time. Turns out I can achieve both. I really do love my job.

From arrival the experience is amazing. The concierge is friendly, helpful and switched on, immediately going out of the way to bring me my laptop from my car. Fatigue is clearly setting in for me. I head up to my room as the lush red carpet and the luxurious wood finishes in the passageway imbue me with a regal sense. This is old-school luxury. My Club Room is a superb suite, very spacious and stylishly finished with a beautiful view of the bay and a lovely private balcony from which to sip coffee and soak up the scenery. The natural lighting, courtesy of the floor-to-ceiling windows, permeates the bedroom and lounge area. In a touching gesture by the staff, I’m greeted by a personalised welcome platter of fruits and healthy snacks. My bathroom epitomises five-star sensibility with its beautiful bath. After a refreshing walk-in shower, where the hotel soaps are lovingly gentle on my skin, I prepare for my first night’s dinner. I will be eating at Jamavar, the hotel’s renowned Indian restaurant. Considered by local food connoisseurs to be a landmark for quality Asian cuisine, Chef Debdash Balaga has prepared a comprehensive menu that covers both North Indian dishes and South Indian coastal delights. fact magazine

I enjoy a gastronomic feast, sampling an array of some the finest options. I try some delightful Punjabi samosas, a vegetarian serving comprised of potato, green peas and a Punjabi tempering, followed by sautéed Malabar prawns with white turmeric. Next in my banquet bouquet is a succulent Kid Goat Shami Keba with bone-marrow sauce and black cardamom. I dabble in some Dakshini Jheenga Southern Spiced Prawns as my definite weakness for seafood reveals itself. The prawns are very good. It’s time to savour some main course dishes. I’m tempted by the classic tandoor roasted chicken called Murgh Makhani, which is easy on the palate. My hosts also want me to experience Murgh Malligai, the tender buttermilk chicken. I’m glad I do as it melts in my mouth. Rounding out things is a touch of Sindi Methti Gosht, some tender kid goat meat with spinach and cinnamon. After a feast of this magnitude an early night beckons in my suite. The comfortable linen and pillows make their case persuasively, and before I know it, I’m in a deep relaxing slumber. I awake fully refreshed and ready to soak up the sunshine of a bright new morning at the Sheraton Grand Doha. My day is structured to include some yoga after lunch, but first it’s breakfast at Al Hubara restaurant, a respectful homage to Qatari heritage with an authentic ambience. After my tasty rise-and-shine experience it’s time for some sunsoaking recreation. I spend an hour or so midmorning on the hotel’s scenic and tranquil beach, reclining in decadent delight on my lounger as the occasional hum of a jet ski approaching shoreline earshot reassures me that I’m not quite dreaming. Together with my delightful host Fatma, I take lunch at La Veranda with its Italian cuisine. produce. After a chat with him, I try the beautifully presented Lamb Loin, marinated in coffee, with sweet korma and a lamb jus. Chef Marouane elaborates on how they try to satisfy lovers of authentic Italian food as well as those with local cultural tastes. He then presents me his signature Tiramisu with its de-constructed composition providing a rollercoaster of flavours as the different elements and textures combine in culinary craftsmanship. After a light but unforgettable lunch, I’m ready to stretch my limits in another direction. I really am partial to a yoga session. In this case I was satisfied in a big way. Vishnu Prasad, founder of Swasthi Yoga and resident instructor at Sheraton Grand Doha, is rather famous in Qatar. My session, some Swathi Transformation Yoga, is highly rewarding as he helps me master the technique, guiding me to hone my mind and push my body to do the poses. His approach is refreshingly down to earth and the whole class is unpretentious. The girls in my class even clap hands when we master a pose. The sea view from the yoga studio is absolutely stunning as we strike our poses overlooking the beautiful beachfront. A good yoga session is always the perfect precursor to dinner. Tonight, I’m experiencing some fishy fare at Al Hubara. As I mentioned, I’m a sucker for seafood so I’m duly excited that the popular seafood night is back at this venue. The live buffet station offers an extensive variety of options and, on this special occasion, I decide to indulge a little, having a generous portion of fresh oysters filled with flavour, transporting my taste buds to the deep blue. Next up is the delicious Rock Lobster Thermidor with gratinated creamy tails, shallots, button mushrooms, fresh 66

tarragon and cheese. The is a hands-down winner to end the evening. After a second night of blissful sleep I once again enjoy breakfast at Al Hubara before spending time exploring the natural charms of the hotel. After a morning working a little on this review and, quite frankly, a lot of stylish laziness, I take my farewell meal at the Pool Café. It’s a relaxed lunch, surrounded as I am by the stunning views of the lush, landscaped garden and crystal-blue waters of the Arabian Gulf. All good things must, however, end and post-lunch I very reluctantly wind-up my magnificent staycation at Sheraton Grand Doha. It’s been a blissful couple of days, and I leave vowing to return whenever I want to reward myself after a hard week of work. ✤

From snowcapped mountain peaks to arid deserts, from voodoo rituals to military might, from concrete jungles throbbing with artistic endeavour and urban decay to island paradises that are more laid-back than a broken pool-recliner, it’s a big, beautiful place. America even has conflicting rap styles depending on which coastline waves happen to break near your backyard, such is the breadth and scope of the nation. And inside that configuration of diverse states sits Florida. The Sunshine State is not just a giant retirement village or a metropolis of Latin-American rhythm, the central city of Orlando is the indisputable world capital of family entertainment. Theme parks and adventure entertainment locations are the lifeblood of the place. It’s not just the Disney-fication of Florida that brings millions of people there every year, it’s the wide array of competitor attractions and landmark all-American experiences configured inside one geographical hub that make it so popular. You visit Orlando for a fortnight and you’ve got a lifetime of funfilled family-friendly memories to take home. I spent seven days among the finest assortment of themed attractions on the planet. Turns out that I would have needed a couple more weeks to do it full justice. But my miscalculation is your good luck as I crammed a whole bunch of brilliant experiences into a single short trip which I’ve called Parks and Recreation. For this review, I’m covering the two heavyweight contenders for the family entertainment crown. First port of call is Disney. The thing about Orlando’s Disney parks is that they are the biggest most elaborate versions of the brand anywhere. Not only are they the flagship iterations of the Disney parks, but they are all in the same geographic space. There’s Disney World, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios all adjacent to one another. The system is set up to make your visit seamless. Magic Kingdom Park Walt Disney World Orlando is the behemoth version of the world’s most famous theme park. Whether you’re a child or a child at heart, it’s almost impossible not to be enchanted by a place that takes you away from the grit of everyday life into a realm of unadulterated escapism. In an ideal scenario, Disney World alone requires a full three days or more to fully explore. Six themed lands offer varied experiences for all age groups, incorporating gentle rides of wonder and adventure to more action-packed thrills. Starting from Main Street USA and traversing either by foot or elevated Monorail, you progress through Frontier Land, Adventure Land, Fantasy Land and Tomorrow Land in a 40-atttraction odyssey unparalleled on this planet. favourite Disney movie characters performing daily in a massive, majestic parade and you have a formula that’s hard to rival.

Or is it? Epcot (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) is a magnificent configuration of forward thinking and vivid imagination. First engineered in the eighties, the attention to detail in the conceptual rides like Space World is breath-taking. The World Showcase (essentially a global village) was a personal highlight as I sampled evening aperitifs in China, took a main course in Italy and topped things off with dessert in Norway. The commitment to authenticity is wonderous. Completing any night is a stupendous fireworks display; 15 minutes of the most magnificent pyrotechnics on the planet, while in the near distance you witness the same scale of show taking place at Disney World simultaneously. Disney spends USD50,000 per park every night on its firework displays and it’s worth every penny. A universal truth is that there will always be a challenger to any throne. Where Disney was once the undisputed King of the Theme Park Jungle, an heir apparent has been thumping its chest for the past decade. Universal, who own three major parks in Orlando - Universal Studios Florida, Universal's Islands of Adventure, and Universal's Volcano Bay water theme park - are smashing down the doors to the throne room. The very best of these parks is Universal Islands of Adventure, a destination that matches Disney World in its ambition and scale of excitement. Two separate islands are home to some incredible experiences. I spent a day in their domain and quite frankly it was nowhere near enough time. I recommend dedicating at least one full day to each of the different territories. Whereas Disney uses an extensive canon of classic original movie content to create their rides and attractions, Universal has leveraged their library of modern movie properties to generate pulling power. Not least of these is the Harry Potter phenomenon. The boys from Universal have built an entire

to-scale replica of Hogsmeade, replete with working shops and taverns, magical rides and a fully-functional Hogwarts Express train. I can vouch for the deliciousness of the Butter Beer (nonalcoholic) and the magical grandeur of Hogwarts Castle, home to some scarier rides and attractions that transport you into a world off credible effects and incredible wizardry. It’s like Disney on steroids. The Skull Island, Reign of Kong dark ride with its animatronic beasts was another that impressed me as did the Jurassic Park water ride. My personal favourite however was the surreal Dr Zeus Landing, a world unto itself filled with vivid colour, distorted designs and gentle kids’ rides to rival anything Disney has to offer. For adrenalin ride junkies (of which I am not one), Marvel Superhero Island is an unmissable feature. The Island is laid out like a graphic novel brought to life, where comic-book characters roam the streets. A couple of my mates took on The Incredible Hulk Coaster, a convoluted green monolith that dominates the park skyline and delivers a ride as aggressive as Bruce Banner on a really bad day. They assured me that its 67mph maximum velocity and zero-gravity loop was as white-knuckle inducing as it sounded. I’ll take their word for it. Before embarking on a trip to Orlando I recommend a planning session of military precision. There are a few key points to keep in mind. Firstly, you can’t see everything in one visit so plan your choices and stick to the agenda. Secondly, prepare yourself for the size of the parks – there will be huge amounts of walking. Thirdly, take a break day mid-visit. You’ll need it. And, last but not least, book a hotel in a central location where bus rides to the main parks are part of the package deal. My park recommendations for a visit relate to your personal demographics. For families with young kids and tweens, the Disney Parks are no-brainers. I would add Legoland to the itinerary, if time permits. For those with teens and young adults in tow, Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios offer the perfect mix of childlike magic, amazing live shows and adrenalised mayhem. If you’re single and adventurous, Kennedy Space Centre is an unmissable and truly indelible experience that you can humblebrag about for years to come. The ideal family vacation destination is both tiring and fantastic. With that in mind, I suggest overloading your senses in Orlando.✤

THE APPLE OF QATAR’S EYE Sebastian Delascasas. Remember the name. In the future you may be hearing a lot more of it.

S

ebastian is a homegrown talent with increasing traction globally. After the Qatar-schooled actor and writer wrapped the short film Live it went to Tribeca and Cannes. And speaking of wraps, strictly under wraps is Sebastian’s role in an unnamed major feature film shooting in Canada and due for release in July 2022. We can’t say much more about it, but it’s clear the young thespian is aiming to shoot the lights out. We chatted to the refreshingly modest and honest actor about his backstory, the characters who’ve influenced his life, and what’s in the script for his future. Tell us about your upbringing in Doha. I arrived here in 2005 at just seven years old. My dad is a pilot for Qatar Airways, which is why my family moved here. It was exciting coming to a new country as a young boy. It was a huge cultural change for me, but I couldn’t have been more grateful for it. You lived in Qatar for 11 years. What are your most precious memories of home? Having seen Qatar become what it is today is one of the most amazing memories I have. I think being able to look back and see how much has changed in such a short time is incredible. I remember there was no Pearl, no Villaggio, in fact, there really wasn’t much. I’ve been very lucky to see how much Qatar has welcomed and taken in other cultures to create a better place. When did you first get bitten by the acting bug? I only started acting in my senior year of high school. Until then I had never really thought about pursuing it. When I went with my little sister to a Doha Players audition for Peter Pan, I ended up getting the lead role, which was incredible. Ever since then, I knew it was what I wanted to do. You performed several times with the Doha Players. Do you have a favourite role or a production you are most proud of with them? I joined the Doha players in 2015. I did William Shakespeare’s The Tempest with them and very much loved playing Ferdinand in that production at the QNCC. It was my first time ever doing Shakespeare. I learned so much from the cast and crew and, to this day, it is one of the main reasons I fell in love with acting. It pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Please share the story of Some Like It Hot Theatre Company and the trip to the Edinburgh Fringe. Jane Williams cast me in the Some Like It Hot Theatre Company’s production of Cluedo. Inc. Although my audition for the show was terrible, she believed in me and really wanted me to be a part of it. I guess she really saw my potential if directed correctly, and I am extremely grateful to her. We travelled to the Edinburgh Fringe festival performing the play there which was one of my greatest experiences. I was also called a “comedic standout” in the Broadway Baby review, which encouraged me to pursue this career. We’re intrigued to know more about the short horror film 6. I wrote 6 as a junior in college. My friend and I shot and directed the whole thing with essentially no budget. After presenting it to my professor, we worked more on it with her and submitted it to a bunch of festivals. The film was nominated for 17 awards and won eight, including Best Actor at the Lee Strasberg Film Festival, Hollywood Blood Horror Festival, London Shorts and Dark Comedy Film Festival and for Best Dark Comedy Film at the Hollywood Blood Horror Festival.

What is the theatre culture like in Qatar? Theatre in Doha has been growing tremendously since I moved there. More and more people are being encouraged to take part in performances and shows. Doha has also made an effort to bring international Broadway productions to perform in recent years, which is an amazing opportunity for everyone. How do you integrate your heritage and your upbringing to the global film market? My Colombian heritage and my Qatari upbringing set me apart. Talent is important, but there are so many talented actors auditioning for things all the time. What makes you special is that you are you. My story is so unique and wonderful to me, that it shines through in my characters. ✤

If you can make it there you can make it anywhere. So, tell us about your New York odyssey. I went to NYU Tisch, studying acting for four years for my Bachelor of Fine Arts. I also studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, and at Stonestreet Studios. Life in New York couldn’t be better for an up-and-coming actor. I was lucky enough to get signed with the wonderful talent agency, A3 Artists, which has opened incredible doors for me. People are always trying to create and tell stories here, so it’s an amazing place to be. Want type of actor do you consider yourself? I studied at the Strasberg Institute, so I guess I would call myself a method actor. Method acting is the idea of using sense memory to trick your brain into reliving circumstances you have lived through and adapting them to the circumstances that your character is going through. Whenever I’m able to dive deep into the skin of another character, I really feel alive.

BIG SCREEN Fear Street Part One: 1994 Need to Know:

Fear Street Part One: 1994 is the first film in a trilogy, released in July 2021. This teen horror is loosely based on the novels by R. L. Stine of the same name. The film brings a supernatural twist to the nostalgic slasher motion pictures of the 1980s and ‘90s. The interesting and wellconstructed story will have you immediately hooked.

With bonechilling cinematography and an incredible soundtrack, this is a delightful watch.

Atypical Need to Know:

Atypical is a comedy-drama with the fourth and final season being recently released. It follows the life of 18-year-old Sam Gardener, who has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and how he deals with everyday problems, such as romance, school and family while being on the spectrum. His family also plays a big part in the show, and we get to see them leading their own lives and having their own issues.

Director: Leigh Janiak Cast: Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Julia Rehwald, Fred Hechinger

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Director: Robia Rashid Cast: Keir Gilchrist, Bridgette Lundy-Paine,

Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Rapaport

This teen horror has just the right amount of terror and gore. With a classic feel, it brings old-time nostalgia to horror aficionados. As the first film in the trilogy, it opens up the story very well and establishes the mysteries in this universe. With bone-chilling cinematography and an incredible soundtrack, this is a delightful watch. Sound is fundamental in horror, and Fear Street Part One: 1994 delivers; you are at the edge of your seat with each footstep and squeaky door hinge. The film centres around Deena (Kiana Madeira) and her friends attempting to stop the evil force causing brutal murders in their small town: Shadyside, nicknamed 'Killer Capital, USA'. As well as the compelling characters and exciting visuals, this show is most definitely worth your time. With all three films already available to watch, this is the ultimate weekend binge.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This heartfelt story centres around Sam (Keir Gilchrist), his relationships with those around him and how his ASD affects his life. We also get to see how his family members grow as they learn more about him and themselves. As the name suggests, this isn't your typical family, and we get to watch each family member discovering themselves, from his younger sister Casey (Bridgette Lundy-Paine) to his helicopter mum (Jennifer Leigh). Even though Sam's autism plays a big part in the series, it isn't the focus. Instead, the focal point is him, his interests, aspirations and connections with others. It shows that he gets to pursue his dreams and find his purpose. The depiction of autism won't always be perfectly accurate, but it is still worth watching to get to know a bit of this universe. The show is down to earth, and many situations are relatable. It is the perfect light-hearted family drama. 74

ONE: Pot, Pan, Planet

CATEGORY: POP Sour By Olivia Rodrigo

CATEGORY: JAZZ, ELECTRONIC, ORCHESTRAL

Promises Floating Points/Pharaoh Sanders/ London Symphony Orchestra

This is a Disney fairy tale with a twist. In the space of about six months, Olivia Rodrigo has gone from lead player on the teen show with the convoluted title, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, to the solo artist who dominates global music charts, outselling her more illustrious big-name competitors. She may be an overnight sensation, but there is more to the young songwriter than meets the eye. Her debut album Sour is a declaration of independence, a private mourning of a relationship past, and an anthem to teen spirit. Despite the hype, it’s a very good debut, written with genuine insight and suggests, in no uncertain terms, that Rodrigo will become far more than a fleeting viral sensation. The first single, Drivers License will be the song of the year. Fact. The second, good 4 u has already chewed up the chart scenery. One listen to the album and you’ll discover there are more singles threatening Top 10 status. Rodrigo’s album talks to a lot of issues that teenagers and young adults face, and it does so with refreshing grace.

Imagine an album that brings together an octogenarian luminary of the jazz world, an electronic music wizard and the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). Promises does all that and more in delivering an eclectic masterpiece. Technically comprised of nine movements, the album plays as a single track punctuated only by the nuances of the contributing artists and ensembles, where synths deliver a discourse with the saxophone exploits of Pharaoh Sanders and the symphonic majesty of a full orchestra. That a seven-note refrain can form the basis of an entire album sounds frighteningly boring, but it is not, empathically not! Jazz icon Sanders, now 80, is sublime, adding a genuine sympathy and tenderness. Driven by the rhythm of UK-based DJ Floating Points (aka Sam Sheperd) and the harmony of LSO, Promises offers episodes in musical exploration and emotional investment. From psychedelic synth to the crude yelps and subtle soulfulness of the saxophone, to luscious string phrases, this release provides a musical journey thoroughly well worth taking.

A Bright Ray of Darkness

By Ethan Hawke You may well know Ethan Hawke from the world of Hollywood, as the four-time Academy Award nominee and star of Training Day, Gattaca and Reality Bites. You might also remember him as the man who cheated on Uma Thurman, but you may not know that he is also an acclaimed writer. The author of three previous novels has not put digits to desktop in 20 years, but showcases his undeniable literary talent once again in this firstperson narrative novel with sardonic bite and deep poignancy. Beginning amid a media-storm around the Hollywood heartthrob protagonist, following their exposure in a compromising situation in Cape Town, South Africa, A Bright Ray of Darkness is a moving meditation on fame, fatherhood and art, as well as being a blistering read. fact magazine

What We’re (Still) Talking About Olympics, Yes or No?

Billionaires in Space

F1 – That Crash

Well, like it or not, as we write the delayed Tokyo Olympics are underway with elite sportspeople from across the world gathered in Tokyo. But this is not the Tokyo that was elated when its successful bid was announced back in September 2013. Last year, due to Covid, Tokyo 2020 became the first Olympics to be postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled. And, while it’s reasonable to argue that, at that point, neither the Japanese organisers nor the International Olympic Committee could have foreseen the devastating ongoing affects of the pandemic.

Did anyone else watch with bemused disgust as Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, hopped into his giant phallic symbol and headed for the stars? And did you, like us, find his thanks to the Amazon workers whose toil put him there (despite reportedly terrible working conditions) more than little tone deaf and distasteful? Some would say there’s no reason he, Richard Branson and, to a lesser extent, Elon Musk – who is at least working with NASA – should not indulge themselves with their colossal personal wealth but it’s hard to stomach when you learn that a study by the Woods Hole Research Institute estimates that reducing

That now infamous crash between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, at the British Grand Prix in July, has excited much debate. Verstappen is known for full-on, aggressive driving while Hamilton is often the more yielding, allowing Verstappen to forge ahead as he holds back and lives to drive another day. It’s a strategy that has served him well, leading him to equal the great Schumacher’s seven world championship titles. But, this season, Verstappen had a commanding lead going into the Silverstone battle and Hamilton, who’s been forced to give way to the Red Bull driver several times during the season, clearly decided

Is it too much to ask that these billionaires spend less time showing off what big wallets they have and more demonstrating big hearts too?

he wasn’t having it any more. His determination to pass the unyielding Verstappen resulted in the crash, which could have been written off as a racing incident. Instead, the Brit was awarded a 10-point penalty, which he accepted grudgingly – and showed remarkable skill to go on and win the race. What came after though was clearly not very sportsmanlike with Red Bull Team Principal, Christian Horner, spouting off furiously, Verstappen castigating his rival for celebrating when he himself was in hospital but unhurt, and Hamilton facing racist abuse online. It’s gonna be a long season ahead!

Those effects have become more than apparent in recent months. A huge percentage of the Japanese public have condemned the decision to go ahead. Thousands of athletes and their support teams, media and a huge labour force have flooded into Tokyo, and that’s despite the decision to hold the events without spectators. Japan is already experiencing a very serious upsurge in infections and there had been more than 120 positive tests connected to the games as we went to press. So, you have to ask was it really worth it? Tell us what you think. 82
