t’s summer in the city and though it’s hot, hot, hot, I can’t help but smile as I see social media posts from back home in the UK and Europe as friends, having spent the winter complaining about the cold wet weather, are now complaining about the heat. And, yes, I know that we’re better prepared here with 24/7 air conditioning from our cars to our homes and

entertainment venues, but sometimes I can’t help but think it’s a case of ‘be careful what you wish for, folks’. Speaking of being prepared for summer, this month we visited two venues that make it clear you don’t have to leave Qatar to enjoy your vacation. In fact, with all the facilities on offer at the Al Dana Club, going anywhere else would actually seem rather silly. We also checked out several restaurants to give you our verdict on some of the best food around. I was particularly excited to see this month’s City Rides, the new BMW Z4 – there’s a little nostalgia there for me and it looks as if the new version is a great improvement while staying true to the nifty little roadster I fell in love with all

Elsewhere, you’ll find our usual round-ups of news from the worlds of motoring, tech, fashion, beauty and more as well as a whole feature on Qatar’s newest five-star venue, Pullman Doha West Bay. BMW UNLEASH THE LATEST GENERATION Z4 BMW have upgraded their legendary roadster, further adding to the appeal of this already popular luxury convertible. 28

fact magazine

CITY RIDES •

I

t’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since automobile giants, BMW, released their very first generation Z4. From day one, this stylish two-seater proved to be an exceedingly popular German roadster, with its sporty good looks and highperformance capabilities. Fast forward to 2022 and BMW have just released their much anticipated, fourth-generation BMW Z4. This month, FACT magazine received the honour of test-driving the latest BMW Z4 sDrive30i, compliments of the team at BMW Qatar. Exterior: The exceptionally stylish exterior of the new Z4 exudes confidence and sporty prowess. This legendary car is everything we’ve come to know and love about the Z4, except it now boasts several upgrades including an even more impressive external design. Despite all the improvements, there is no mistaking what model car this is, especially from the front end. The elongated clamshell bonnet that is synonymous with the Z4 features arrow-shaped contour lines that draw the eye towards the front grille. The broad, new-look mesh design, BMW kidney grille combines a track-inspired honeycomb pattern with a three-dimensional structure, giving the Z4 an ultra-modern appearance. This novel grille design is underscored by a powerfully sculptured front apron, complete with large air intakes. LED headlights are fitted as standard, with the two light sources located one

above the other, for the first time. The clean-cut nature of the Z4’s surface doesn’t stop at the hood. The joints at the bonnet’s sides merge seamlessly into the upper character line of the flanks, running all the way to the car’s back end. A second character line glides from the large air breathers, effortlessly connecting with the rear wheel arches. Seventeeninch, light-alloy wheels are fitted as standard, along with the black soft-top roof. Able to open or close in 10 seconds, the fully electric soft-top can be operated at speeds of up to 50km/h. At the tail end, the boot’s lid sports a harmoniously integrated spoiler as well as horizontally arranged, L-shaped light assemblies. The robust looking rear apron is complemented by the side surrounds, whilst the trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes sit proudly at the edges of the prominent diffuser. Interior: The exclusive nature of the Z4 sDrive30i is further enhanced by the interior. We were greeted by a first-class cabin complete with a driver-focused cockpit design. Supportive and uber-comfy sports seats are fitted as standard and feature integral head restraints. From this commanding position, the driver orientated setup becomes even more obvious. The structured arrangement of the controls, along with the shift paddles on the adjustable sport steering wheel, have all been designed for an optimal driving experience. fact magazine

29

• CITY RIDES With the soft-top up, there is still plenty of room on offer for both driver and passenger. The roominess of the 2022 Z4 is complemented by the use of premium materials throughout the vehicle. One of our favourite features of the interior design was the way in which the door panel contours echo some of the exterior graphic elements. This accentuates the harmony of the external and internal designs. The boot capacity has been increased by 50%, now offering a convenient 281 litres of storage space. This makes the latest generation Z4 far more practical for everyday use. Infotainment & Technology: The new Z4 includes the BMW Live Cockpit Professional; a superb package offering a fresh display and operating system which provides the ultimate in connectivity and is powered by the new BMW operating system 7.0. This system is controlled through a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, along with the Control Display, located in the centre console. Both screens measure an impressive 10.25 inches (diagonal) and offer crystal clear graphics. The voicecontrol system has also been upgraded and contributes greatly to the user-friendly and convenient nature of the new Z4. This setup also includes an adaptive navigation system and a hard-based multimedia system. Thanks to Remote Software Upgrades, your Z4 will always feature the latest software. We found this setup in its entirety to be very intuitive, easy to navigate and exceptionally helpful when attempting to access all manner of features and information.

and a very effective braking system, the responsive Z4 is a pleasure to drive. An added bonus is the fuel-efficient nature of the car, consuming only 6.0 - 6.1 litres per 100km. CO2 emissions are also low at 139 - 137 grams per kilometre. Safety: It's no surprise that BMW have included a wide range of both safety and cutting-edge driver assistance features in the new Z4. Included as standard are front, side and head airbags for both occupants, three-point inertia-reel seatbelts, crash sensors, a rollover protection system, a tyre pressure indicator and Electric Power Steering (EPS) amongst many others. Optional extras include Active Cruise Control, Lane Change & Lane Departure Warning systems, Parking and Reverse Assistant, BMW Head-Up Display and much more. ✤

Performance: The highlight of our day was engaging the ignition, as the roar of the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, TwinPower, turbocharged petrol engine was exactly what we had wanted to hear. The powerful engine of the Z4 sDrive30i delivers a maximum output of 258hp and produces a peak torque of 400Nm. This combined with the standard eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with optimised efficiency, allows the sDrive30i to surge from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds, and to reach an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. With excellent cornering capabilities, finely tuned suspension,

Meaning ‘custom-built’ in the manufacturer’s native Italian, Fuoriserie provides a suite of customisation options for the Quattroporte, Ghibli, and Levante models. Customers can start writing their own audacious story by choosing one of three unique collections: Corse, Unica, and Futura. The Quattroporte Trofeo Unica features a white paint job with rainbow-colored metallic flakes, while the windows have a multicolored finish – in shades of yellow, green, orange, blue, and purple – that vary in colour depending on the viewing angle. Inside, Maserati has opted for white and turquoise upholstery. Finally, the Levante Trofeo Futura uses a Textured Blue Graphite paint job for the first time, along with a rough satin finish and small cross-shaped reflectors that highlight the 3D scan points. The interior of this one-off version sports Alcantara and white leather seats. CELESTIALLY ELECTRIC Cadillac has unveiled the CELESTIQ show car, a model that previews the brand’s future handcrafted, all-electric flagship sedan.

Conceived to lead Cadillac’s electric future and inspired by the brand’s 120-year heritage, CELESTIQ serves as a touchstone for the Cadillac design and engineering teams, who continue to develop the model as it moves closer to production. “The CELESTIQ show car is the purest expression of Cadillac,” said Magalie Debellis, manager, Cadillac Advanced Design. “It brings to life the most integrated expressions of design and innovation in the brand’s history, coalescing in a defining statement of a true Cadillac flagship.” In developing the show car, the design and engineering teams immersed themselves in the artisanship and customisation that defined early Cadillac sedans such as the bespoke V-16 powered coaches of the pre-war era, and the hand-built 1957 Eldorado Brougham. The CELESTIQ is the culmination of that heritage, brought to life with innovative production methods and new technologies. Designers drew further inspiration from classic architecture such as the mid-century masterpieces of architect Eero Saarinen, along with other iconic American designs, which made era-defining statements when introduced and endured with distinctive timelessness. Realising and infusing those influences within an Ultium-based EV architecture resulted in a clean-sheet expression for the CELESTIQ show car that considers the entirety of travel as a 34

curated experience — one intended to evoke an emotional response. 5 OVER 5 •

How did you become involved in leisure industry management? It’s quite an unusual career goal. I grew up going to amusement parks with my family at an early age. When I got to college, I began lifeguarding as a way to pay for school. I studied at Central Michigan University and went on to receive my Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Northampton in the United States. I have a passion for aquatics which is why I spent my summers working at a large waterpark. I slowly moved up into management and felt like I could really make a difference. I still feel that I make a difference with my team here at Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park. What first brought you to the Middle East? I first moved to the Middle East in 2012 to be part of the opening of Yas Waterworld, Abu Dhabi. After positions across the region managing major water and theme parks, I was at Ferrari World, the world's largest indoor theme park. I have stayed to work at one of the largest theme parks in the Middle East, Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park. We have a diversity of rides and slides that are jaw dropping! What’s the best part of your job at Desert Falls? The best part of my job is training skills that will last our team members a lifetime. Whether it’s CPR, computer skills or teamwork, this is knowledge they can take anywhere. Teamwork is imperative and continuously encourages a fun and engaging environment for everyone on my team. Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park is one of the largest theme parks in the Middle

East, which attracts guests from all over and we train our lifeguards to keep our guests safe. After 20 years in the industry, do you still get a thrill from going on the rides sometimes and which are the ones everyone should try at Desert Falls? There are certain rides that never fail to provide the excitement and thrills, no matter how many times you ride them. My favourites at the park are the Family Abyss and Whizzard Mat Racer. The Abyss is different each time depending on where you are positioned within the tube. It also stays a thrill because you can ride the slides with different people each time and the looks of excitement, nerves and sometimes fear, get me every time. The Whizzard is always a thrilling slide due to the experience of travelling head first down the slide while competing against your friends. Although those are my favourites, I would highly recommend guests to also try our canyoning experience. The canyoning attraction at Desert Falls is the first manmade canyoning structure in the Middle East. Therefore, many of our guests have never experienced anything like it. It is not only a thrill to take guests but truly inspiring to see how they conquer the fear and jump into the pools from various heights. Everyone should experience this when visiting Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park. What do you like to do in Qatar when you’re not working? Qatar has a lot to offer and tourism has a big role within the country and more and more attractions and facilities are available for people to explore. Personally, I have really enjoyed exploring this country from sinkholes to heritage sites, to museums, there is always something new and exciting to discover. ✤ fact magazine

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

T

onight, we are in for a treat; Nozomi – Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl. Japanese fine dining with a European twist awaits us, in an intimate setting overlooking the sea and grand façade of the main hotel. Plush leather chairs are our chariots for the night, which transport us to the best of contemporary Japanese cuisine, alongside mellow world music containing chilled beats to ease us on our way. Our server, Tausif, swiftly provides liquid refreshment before proudly bringing forth a selection of Nozomi’s most delicious offerings. We are in extremely safe hands with Chef Vugar, who has long been a creator of Japanese delicacies in restaurants all over the world. Spicy Edamame, Rock Shrimp, Nikuman and Nozomi Tacos are our first encounters. The spicy edamame are warm and sweet, coated in a chilli sauce containing sriracha and kimchi, and the shrimps are elegantly served in a tall glass – delicately soft prawns, coated in an airy, crispy batter, drizzled with Japanese sriracha mayonnaise. If steamed buns are on your hit list, then you must try the Nikuman: these are doughy and fluffy. They contain Wagyu beef marinated in a sweet teriyaki sauce and mixed with a delicious onion marmalade. Branded with the Nozomi logo, they are a show piece as well as a dish. The Nozomi Tacos are again Wagyu beef, marinated in Chef Vugar’s secret spicy sauce, placed inside crunchy taco shells, garnished with chopped chives and served with guacamole and some all-important lime wedges, which set off the sweetness, lifting the flavours. Fresh from the sushi bar in the restaurant’s centre, where chefs are on display creating sushi, nigiri and maki for all, we are served Arabian Gulf Prawn Tempura Maki, Spider Roll and Khalij Maki, alongside the Nozomi Green Salad (from which truffle scents are tantalisingly wafting). Fresh ginger and wasabi adorn each of the maki plates – there is no hint of vinegar here, they really do taste as fresh as they are. The Arabian Gulf Prawn Tempura Maki combines tempura prawns with avocado, glazed in a teriyaki and gently spicy sauce, and is showered with a flurry of panko breadcrumbs. Crucially, the maki has been rolled in sesame seeds, adding a beautiful nuttiness and texture to the dish. The Spider Roll is deep-fried soft shell crab, mixed with crunchy cucumber and tobiko (Japanese flying fish roe), and served with sriracha mayonnaise and ‘spider legs’ (tiny, deep fried potato shavings) covering the maki hiding underneath. We also have the Khalij Maki, chargrilled chicken with an almost smoky taste to it, small shavings of pickled cucumber and spring onion, served with Japanese mayonnaise and a blob of chilli garlic sauce on the top. All of this is accompanied by the Nozomi Green Salad, which contains avocado tempura (think ‘lightly crunchy meets smooth and creamy’), salad leaves and a white truffle oil that has been blended with parsley in a vinaigrette that is fragrant and indulgent. Then we meet the main courses. Wagyu Beef Fillet and Mushroom Takikomi-Gohan. Both are out-of-this-world delicious. Chef Vugar recommends we have our steak medium rare, and I can wholeheartedly say that this man knows what he is talking about! The steak is divine; taken from Takima Wagyu cattle raised in Hyogo, Japan, Nozomi serves only grade 9+. There is Wagyu and then there is Wagyu. This is the latter. A steak not only rare fact magazine

43

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT in consumption form, but also a rare find in the Wagyu world. Lightly charred on the outside, it is soft, tender and wonderful to eat. Beautifully served on a leaf, with sakura cress on top, a pot of Wafu sauce (flavours of sesame, soy and shredded carrot strands), and a small mound of salt; everything comes together to make the perfect steak. Alongside this, we thoroughly enjoy the Mushroom TakikomiGohan – a decadent blend of truffle oil, silky portobello, shitake and oyster mushrooms, mixed with sweet, but still savoury, Japanese rice. It is so moreish, and I do really want to save myself for dessert, but honestly find myself unable to stop. My guest and I steel ourselves, as we cannot possibly forego the Nozomi Chocolate Fondant being brought to our table. A warm chocolate fondant, inside which streams flowing chocolate, stylishly presented with the trademark Nozomi logo in a dusting of cacao powder at the centre of a large white plate, some freshly made vanilla ice cream sitting on a rich, buttery biscuit and a single redcurrant berry. It’s a thing of beauty. Warm Nozomi-branded towels, infused with lemongrass, are the perfect opportunity to refresh ourselves after this delectable feast. We meet Chef Vugar on the way out, who is all smiles, especially when we tell him how much we adored his Wagyu and Takikomi-Gohan. First established in London’s Knightsbridge area, the Nozomi brand is going from strength to strength, with new Saudi outlets opening up in Al Khobar and Riyadh. This award-winning restaurant is a favourite amongst the many people who have been welcomed through its doors. Indulge in an array of Japanese haute cuisine, but whatever you do, make sure to indulge in that Wagyu steak. ✤

DINING DELIGHT •

N

estled in the heart of the Pearl’s Medina Centrale; we find ourselves set for a mid-week morning indulgence at La Casa Twenty-Eight. A recent FACT Dining Award winner as the Favourite Mediterranean Restaurant of the year, it offers guests nothing less than a palate pleasing journey. And with their newest breakfast menu addition - you’re in for a treat! The ambience is a tasteful blend of modern and classic styles – a brightly lit, sprawling space with soft velvet seating, elegant white walls, a high ceiling which brings out a French essence and cosy corners to fit the Instagram era. On entering, we are warmly greeted by the Restaurant Supervisor Ryan, who leads us to our table, whilst the Italian Executive Chef Matteo casually talks us through the newly introduced breakfast offering which is wrapped in simplicity of thought, giving you that home-made and wholesome feel. A freshly brewed cappuccino to start my day, as I scroll through the set menu and options to choose á la carte. The humble kitchen rustles up culinary delights which are all made to order – nothing is prepared in advance – and serves generous portions if you’re in the mood to share. In my case, this was much needed to keep enough space in my stomach to taste both the savoury and sweet dishes. With the open kitchen concept, you can watch your food being prepared every step of the way as well as enjoy the aromatic journey. Before we know it, La Casa’s executive chef whets our appetite as he stops by our table with a trolley full – a wide selection of fruits, house-made breads, freshly baked Italian pastries, which include mini croissant, mini Bombolone doughnut, mini Cannolo fact magazine

47

• DINING DELIGHT and Sfogliatella Napoletana, alongside a variety of cereals and cheese. What better way to start your morning? I could probably write a novel about my love for avocado toast, so it’s no surprise I go with the Avocado and Tomato Tartine to begin – keeping it healthy with whole grain bread toasted to perfection with just the ideal crunch, layered with soft herbed cream cheese, avocado, a hint of lemon and poached eggs cooked to our liking. Believe me, this is comfort on a plate. My attention then turns to a very delicately presented dish; their Hummus Toast with a twist – perfect for a quick midday snack and boost of energy. A delectable beetroot basil hummus with orange wedges to add just the right amount of sweetness on freshly made sourdough bread – just out of the oven and topped with boiled egg. I must say, there’s a pleasing simplicity to the dishes. Moving forward, I savour the signature Benedict La Casa – medium poached eggs Benedict on a soft English muffin with Canadian bacon. Who doesn’t love seasonal potatoes, with gently roasted plum tomato and buttered asparagus alongside truffle-infused Hollandaise sauce to pour over, which exposes just how spot-on the cooking is – nothing is hidden in a medley of competing flavours. My favourite is most definitely the open-faced bagel topped with smoked salmon on beautifully light and fresh dill cream cheese, alongside a leafy green arugula salad tossed in vinaigrette and drizzled with olive oil – easy on the taste buds. Your experience at La Casa isn’t complete without something to satisfy the sweet tooth - as I go headlong into my calorie quota of the day! The Brioche French Toast is to die for – fluffy enough and filled with decadent pistachio cream and Vanilla Chantilly with macerated fresh strawberries and maple syrup. It’s a mouthful of cloudiness...simply delicious. As a fusion restaurant with roots in both Italy and Andalucia, La Casa has its own take on its dishes, making them a gastronomical journey from start to finish. They cater to a wide range of different tastes. Whether you get your hands on the set menu or choose à la carte, you will need to bring your appetite. Believe me, it’s the breakfast of your dreams. ✤

A

sunny Saturday afternoon just off the coast of downtown Doha, Riva re-opens its doors – welcoming lovers of traditional Mediterranean cuisine. Here you can tuck into succulent seafood, mouth-watering grilled meats, hearty salads, homemade pasta, as well as indulge in pizza; all made with love by Head Chef Julio Sanz. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by our attendant, Zahra, who walked us to our table by the window where just the right amount of sun was shining through. The indoor dining area is characterised by refreshing modern décor, with a relaxed ambience and nonchalant island vibe – displaying a live kitchen for preparing wood-fire pizza, for a beautiful aromatic experience. Open for both lunch and dinner – I suggest, to squeeze every drop of deliciousness from your visit, come by early for a leisurely stroll along a series of pathways fringed with lush botanical gardens as you eventually find your way to Riva. Sip on a nonalcoholic aperitif in the lavish outdoor seating – the perfect place to appreciate the golden beach and stunning views of the ocean front. For a split second, I almost had an ‘out of Doha’ experience – you might even think you’re in the Maldives. How’s that for a change of atmosphere this holiday season? We started off with a welcome peach iced tea shot; the best way to beat the heat and cool off! On special request, and with such close attention to detail, Zahra prepared a warm ginger honey tea to soothe my sore throat while we looked through the extensively revamped menu which introduces famous flavours from different parts of the Mediterranean area. fact magazine

• ON THE MENU

The lunch starts the way all good meals should: with a sizeable slice of house made sourdough bread, served with harissa and garlic oil to begin the culinary journey. Thereafter, we were treated to a selection of main menu items chosen specifically by Chef Julio. First up, and my all-time favourite, juicy Heirloom tomatoes with creamy rich burrata. It is truly one of the best food combinations in existence; every time I eat this dish, I’m overwhelmed by how good it is. Refreshing for a hot summer day – lightly coated with olive oil, balsamic jelly and pesto sauce to moisten – but just enough, so that nothing overpowers the flavours of the fruit. We opted for the ever so tender Black Angus beef medallion, dressed with seared Foie Gras and served Rossini style. The plate was artfully offset with baby carrots, crispy asparagus, cèpe mushrooms, melt-in-the-mouth truffle mashed potatoes and jus, to pour over to your liking. Itching to travel to Spain? Riva brings to you a Spanish essence with the flavourful classic seafood paella that followed – vibrant, bold and just delicious! It featured gently grilled prawns, calamari, mussels, scallops and bell peppers. To add that extra oomph, a little drizzle of herbed chilli oil and we were more than satisfied. The main-course game was a tantalising competition of taste and provenance, with each element on the plate battling it out to impress the palate and score sourcing points. We finished on a sweet high with an old faithful – the tiramisu. However, with chef’s twist – it is not overly sweet yet the rich 52

mascarpone really allows the flavour of the espresso to bloom on the tongue. Made with a velvety banana cake, chocolate, coffee cookies and dusted beautifully with cocoa powder and rock salt, nothing could compare to this airy delight – every spoonful hit the mark! I must say, the staff were extremely friendly and attentive to our needs – with suggestions and recommendations on hand. This is not a meal to be rushed but one to really be relished. Riva offers you quality and quantity on all the various dishes – I believe it would delight anyone from the Mediterranean region and impress anyone who was trying the cuisine for the very first time. So, get on that boat and make your way to Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara. ✤

DAYCATION •

I

am indulging in some pre-summer R&R today at Doha’s Al Dana Club, a private members club with a family focus and traditional values. There is plenty to occupy all the family here, from exercise, relaxation and dining to playtime events and even business meetings, all in an intimate yet homely setting. We are greeted at reception by Executive Secretary Victoria, and immediately feel we are in a grand and traditional residence – high ceilings, Arabic architecture, paintings depicting Qatari history and heritage and decorative coloured glass windows. Set against the skyscrapers of West Bay, Al Dana Club is a small oasis of calm, and a cooling shelter from the elements. Despite its 26-year history, Al Dana Club continues to refresh its offerings, moving with the needs of members and their families. An American Chiropractor Centre and a flower shop, Blossom and Bloom, will open later this year. Later we visit the newly restyled Bayt Al Dana restaurant, now serving Middle Eastern cuisine, which opens its doors to all. Additionally, Al Dana Club welcomes non-member ladies through its doors every Sunday, who can access all areas, alongside their children (males under eight years also permitted). We are given a tour of the many private member facilities, which include Adults Lounge – which displays a wonderful selection of loose-leaf teas to smell and sample and offers a place for members to conduct meetings in quietude; Dorra Lounge Café, conveniently placed next to the Adults Lounge; Al Wajih Barber Shop; and Al Wajih Ladies Beauty Centre. There are also family and children’s lounges – Nimro Family Lounge, incidentally gloriously decorated with ornate ‘door artwork’, serves Amorino Gelato Al Nashrale overlooking the outdoor pool and, during the cooler months, replaces the ice cream with barbecue. Attached to this is the Nimro Kids’ Lounge; a haven for children to play – füßball, air hockey, gaming stations, computer stations – and relax with comfy sofas, tables and a projector wall for the Movie Nights that they put on every Thursday. There is even a play area for smaller children, with soft mats and a playhouse. All the changing rooms we see have baby changing facilities; always extremely welcome for those of us with nappy experience! Talking of entertaining children, there is a Kids’ Gym dedicated to fitness and exercise for eight to 12-year-old members, supervised at all times so that children can safely exercise without the need for their guardian to be present. The gym is cheerfully decorated, with child-sized crosstrainers and exercise bikes, mini weights, a climbing wall, floor ladders and running machines (on top of which are individual television screens). Such is the family focus at Al Dana Club, they will also host a summer camp for children aged eight to 12 years (open also to non-members), run by Ultra Sports from mid-July to mid-August. We are shown into the Jewan Hall; an expansive, plush, carpeted space with capacity for 1,000 guests. High ceilings, archway cornices and historically used for wedding fact magazine

celebrations for both male and female functions, the space is also available for bookings to non-members. Next, we see (and later enjoy) the Bahar, indoor pool area, for which there are female only and mixed timings throughout the week. The changing rooms contain steam and sauna rooms, and a massage room, for which there are dedicated therapists. Super Bowl food and beverage bar is situated next to the pool for healthy drinks and snacks before, during or after exercise or play. The pool has a bold ceiling of pale blue and white cornices, with a domed Arabic star at its centre. Its gently toasty pool is divided into a children’s area, lane swimming and free swimming (which plays host to aqua aerobics classes at various times during the week), and then has a hot Jacuzzi, and, for the brave, a cold Jacuzzi in its wings. We loved the hot Jacuzzi but were not brave enough to attempt the cold one – maybe we had done an insufficient amount of exercise to warrant it! If you are looking for adult exercise, do not fear, there is plenty to keep you occupied! Overlooking the pool is the main gym, in which there are dedicated PTs, and a range of supplementary activities for members. Just outside the gym we find the multi-purpose courts (tennis, basketball, and football), a children’s adventure play area, trampoline and ping pong table, along with an indoor waiting area for guardians preferring some shelter. There are also male and female praying rooms and washrooms located outside, just next to the main entrance. We nip back inside to see the two indoor tennis courts, 60

before touring the Tawash (ladies only gym and studio). Trainer Emily tells us that classes here include Zumba, Pilates, Core, Yoga, Circuit Training, Spinning, Step, Boxing, and ‘Bums, Legs and Tums’. After a gentle morning enjoying the hospitality and relaxing environs of the Bahar, we walk to the newly reopened Bayt Al Dana restaurant (open to non-members), via the outdoor pool, which is stunningly set against the backdrop of the West Bay skyline, with sun loungers to enjoy pre or post relaxing dip. We are treated to so much wonderful food this lunchtime, but before I talk about the food, I must mention the considered and beautiful décor that has been used. ‘Dallah’ (traditional coffee and tea pot vessels), pots and pans line walls, with small and intimate lamps, traditional artwork, Arabic tiles and an open kitchen, into which we can see while our food is being prepared. Jordanian Head Chef, Mohammed Kamleh, has taken traditional recipes, passed on through generations, and made them accessible and interesting to a modern crowd. Solid earthenware is used for all the dishes, and the food is well-balanced, flavoursome and moreish. Our server Yassine brings out a selection of mezze and salads (Chef Mohammed tells us that, where possible, the mezze are prepared a day in advance, to enhance flavours and deliciousness). We try Horaa Osbao (traditional slowcooked lentils, fragrant with spices, and then run through with pomegranate molasses), Chicken Liver (wonderfully caramelised, and served with pomegranate sauce containing hints of lemon – delicious), Fattoush (fresh and crunchy, balancing citrusy lemon with pomegranate sweetness), and Beetroot & Feta Cheese (a colourful salad, where the deep red of the beetroot contrasts with the dusting of feta, glazed in a super dressing that contains just a hint of honey). Our mains are Lamb Tagine (a light take on a traditional Moroccan tajine, in which dates have been switched for dry plums, which bring out the cumin flavours, balancing the sweet and savoury perfectly) and Samak Bil Sanayah (seasoned hammour, marinated in tahini and served on basmati rice with caramelised onion shavings, spices and nuts), and we barely have space to fit in (don’t worry, we managed!) the Kunafa Bil Ashta and Ghazal Al Banat Arabic Ice Cream desserts. The Kunafa is light, and served with a lemon rose jam, and the Ghazal Al Banat is a pistachioencrusted ice cream, on top of which rests traditional Arabic cotton candy. A little touch of sweetness to round off our eatathon! A quiet and homely haven, where traditional Qatari culture runs through the very fabric of the building, Al Dana Club is welcoming, with a family feel. Here, members are received as extended family rather than guests and encouraged to exercise, unwind and dine; we definitely did all three! ✤

he Banyan Tree bears with it a meaningful reputation, symbolising eternal life, and is fondly referred to as the ‘blessed’ tree. Sustainability is on the tip of everyone’s tongues these days, and rightly so, and, for that reason, as well as the very real need for a weekend of rejuvenation, I was delighted to be invited to try this eco-conscious haven for the first time. As I arrive with my partner on a bustling Thursday afternoon, I am greeted by a friendly team led by General Manager, Jose Portocarrero. The lobby is impressive yet whimsical, with rhythmic music accompanied by impressive LED lights bouncing their glow off the largerthan-life banyan tree sculptures. I’m told by one of the welcoming front office staff that the renowned interior designer Jacques Garcia, author of this experience, aimed to express all the elements of life from the moment you enter, right up to the top floor, where Vertigo lounge provides an impressive display of the ‘air’ element. On the left of the lobby, you experience a fire element dancing through the sculptures and on the right, the water element is expressed in flowing terms. The check-in is smooth, and I’m pleasantly surprised that our bags make it to the room before us. We are whisked away to see our room as the concierge unpacks the history and unique touchpoints of the property. The Banyan Tree Doha also offers recreational indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor experiential theme park and an exclusive cinema multiplex for all ages to enjoy some escapism. In addition, a variety of exclusive dining options define the brand's commitment to quality of life. We enter our urban retreat suite and I am welcomed by a delightful array of sweets, fruits and cheeses with a personal welcome note. The room is absolutely breathtaking! With sumptuous turquoise velvet wallpaper, lavish mirror doors and elegant furniture, the space makes you feel like royalty. Exquisite views of the city are emphasised by the floor-to-ceiling windows. I’m a sucker for detail, so I really enjoy the motion-activated light that illuminates the area where your slippers are placed. The 60sq/m room feels airy and spacious, yet intimate with its subtle divisions. A mandatory flop onto the bed proves that it is fit for both King and Queen, adorned with sleek sheets and fluffy pillows. My favourite part is the glamourous bathroom sporting sleek white and grey marble and mirror separations. The bathroom products are all biodegradable and dispensed in stylish re-usable ceramic containers. The night is young, and my partner and I head out for a romantic sundowner at Vertigo as we await a guest visiting from out of town to join us for dinner. Vertigo only opens its doors at 6pm, but it is worth the wait as the sunset vista sets the tone for the evening. fact magazine

It’s been a long week and we are eager to enjoy our food. I am no stranger to the renowned Italian cuisine of Il Galante, but I am eager to return and see if they are still as good as before, as I have more recently developed a rather picky palate. Culinary inspiration was drawn from Vincenzo Corrado’s cookbook called The Il Cuoco Galante Cookbook, revering traditional Italian cuisine with the best ingredients served with love and passion in a classy setting. Head Chef, Rosario Cavallaro recommends that we start with a Meleanzane Alla Parmigiana and Scala dei Turchi (tuna tartare), which is a fresh addition to the menu. The Meleanzane (eggplant with parmesan) makes a dramatic entrance with a cloud of smoke and is neatly constructed on a rock-like plate, infused with a fresh flavour and a comforting richness. Chef’s interesting spin on the tuna tartare is innovative and creative with the perfectly seasoned tuna served on a bed of fresh mandarin slices and garnished with fennel, toasted almonds, basil, lemon zest, Maldon Sea Salt, avocado and black pepper, and accompanied by a side of Almond Granita. For mains, my partner opts for the Risotto Porcini made with Mascarpone sauce and roasted hazelnuts. I’m not a risotto fan, but I absolutely loved the rich mushroom flavours and the creamy sauce. I am served with another new addition to the menu, the Wagyu Beef Tenderloin, drizzled in a coffee cream and chocolate beef jus. The dish is complemented by its integral ingredients of rocket salad, pecorino cheese, caramelised figs, toasted 66

pine nuts, truffle mayonnaise, Maldon Sea Salt, avocado and black pepper. Cooked to perfection, this delight is an assured crowd-pleaser. We end the culinary extravaganza with another new kid on the dessert block, a larger-than-life lemon serving dish that presents a lemon sorbet on a bed of ice. Rich and tangy lemon flours tantalise the taste buds and are a firm favourite with me. I thoroughly indulge in the unique Black Truffle Tiramisu ensemble and call it a night. Overall, the food is spectacular, the service impeccable and the romantic atmosphere a must to experience. situated in the beautiful garden and is perfect for a morning swim and great for kids to enjoy too. Afterwards, we simply have to try the stylish Jacuzzi to unwind and soak in the intimate environment. With the spa due to open in August, I book myself a Therapeutic Moor Mud Bath treatment. Seeing the range of bath treatments that Banyan Tree offer is exciting. They provide a range of different rituals as an ode to the ancient Greek and Roman cultures designed to work their alchemy and calm body and mind. Presented via a rose petal path way lit-up by candles, and served with sparkling grape juice, fruit and a chocolate platter, the Moor Mud Bath is total unadulterated indulgence. SUMMER HOLIDAY – CZECH. Experience glorious historical architecture, a picturesque ancient spa city and scenic hiking trails in Czechia, a popular European destination.

T

he Czech Republic, or Czechia as it’s also known, is an ideal place to visit this time of the year. During the day, the temperature generally doesn’t exceed 25 degrees Celsius and nights are cooler. In this article, we will explore interesting things to see and do in two major cities, each offering starkly different experiences, as well as some popular hiking routes.

Prague The capital city, Prague, is said to have the one of the best public transportation systems in Europe so, getting around is easy. The architecture here is particularly noteworthy. You can spot a wide range of styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and more modern ones such as Art Nouveau and Neo-Classical. Prague Castle is a major attraction. It’s a complex comprising many structures exhibiting different styles such as the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral and the Romanesque St. George’s Basilica. The latter is the oldest surviving church building within this complex, which also includes a monastery and several palaces, gardens and defence towers. Most of the areas are open to tourists. Further, it houses many museums including the National Gallery Prague. The permanent exhibition here is dedicated to Czech history. In addition to being a historical hub, Prague has much for arts enthusiast. The Lennon Wall, inspired by the late former Beatle, offers the perfect backdrop for a memorable photograph with John Lennon-inspired graffiti; lyrics of the band’s songs feature in addition to designs relating to local and global causes. Lovers of literature must visit the Franz Kafka Museum, which exhibits first edition books and original letters, diaries and drawings – an absolute treat for fans!

Make a pitstop for a lunch cruise on the Vltava river and enjoy amazing views of the Old Town Bridge Tower and Charles Bridge. Czech gastronomy features hearty stews and meaty mains. Svíćková, which gets its name from the popular local sauce made of root vegetables and heavy cream, is a steak dish. The meat is cooked with vegetables and spices and doused in the velvety sauce. It’s served with knedlíky, which are the traditional dumplings. They are boiled, which gives them their distinct spongy texture. Whipped cream and cranberry sauce are typically served as part of the dish. The Czech goulash, a robust beef stew typically served with bread or potato knedlíky, is another staple. If you’re looking for something lighter, we recommend the ubiquitous chlebíćek – open-faced sandwich. If you’re on the go, get a Czech-style hot dog or párek v rohlíku. The local sausages have a thicker casing, offering a good bite. Czech brews are also popular and you could book one of the brew tours. Plus there’s much to appease the sweet toothed; trdelník, a hollow cylinder of dough dusted with cinnamon, sugar and nuts, is popular with locals and tourists alike. Or enjoy the spirit of the holiday season in summer with the immaculately decorated perníćky or gingerbread cookies and vánoćní cukroví, which are a selection of Christmas cookies; they’re sold all year round. Prague’s Old Town has many interesting offerings. The Prague Orloj, a medieval astronomical clock attached to the Old Town Hall, features interesting components; it indicates the position of the sun and moon in the sky and has a calendar dial and figures of Catholic saints. The architectural extravaganza continues here and in New Town, which is home to the famed Dancing House. The original building, which was destroyed during the war has been restored in a way that part of it appears slanted. fact magazine

Karlovy Vary Spa treatments are a great way to relax, especially on a holiday. Head to Karlovy Vary or Carlsbad, one of Europe’s best spa towns. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s home to numerous natural hot springs teaming with minerals, which are said to have cured illnesses for centuries. There are five main colonnades, flaunting beautiful architectural styles where the springs’ waters seep: Mill Colonnade, Park Colonnade, Market Colonnade, Castle Colonnade and Hot Spring Colonnade – which houses the biggest and hottest spring. You can collect the water at a fountain-like structure in the colonnade and sip on it. A caveat: drinking large quantities could give you a stomach ache. We recommend you check into one of the many spa hotels in the area. They offer a range of wellness treatments in addition to a prescribed [spring water] drinking programmes tailored to suit your medical condition. Even if you don’t have a health issue, simply unwind at the pool or get a massage. Some spa hotels offer thermal baths with water from the springs. You could even take a bottle of the hot spring salts home as a souvenir. Don’t forget to try the spa wafers or lázećské oplatky. Back in the day, they were sprinkled with sugar and served to spa guests. Spring water and salt are said to give this melt-inyour-mouth traditional snack its unique flavour. You can buy them fresh from street vendors or packaged at shops. These days, different flavours including hazelnut, almond, chocolate and vanilla are available. Other souvenirs include Becherovka, which is produced here. It 70

was first sold in 1807 as ‘English Bitter’, a remedy for stomach illnesses. Having the flavours of ginger and cinnamon, it’s consumed as a digestive or appetiser. Cheese lovers must take home some abertam, a traditional Czech variety from Karlovy Vary. A picturesque town, Carlsbad is also sprinkled with parks and gardens that are beautifully landscaped. Relax under a gazebo or head to an observation tower on the hills to enjoy breath-taking views of the city.

Nature Trails If you’re the outdoorsy type or simply want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, you’ll be pleased to know that the Czech Republic is home to numerous hiking trails. Bohemian Switzerland National Park has many well-marked routes. Most of them permit hiking and cycling – you can rent a bike or bring your own. Some areas are best accessed via boat, which is a paid service. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there’s a trail for every traveller. Located about two hours from Prague by road, the park contains the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, dense forests and deep gorges. If you are driving, parking areas are available for a fee. Or you could board a train from Prague. Bohemian Switzerland National Park is part of the larger Bohemian Switzerland, a picturesque landscape. While day tours are available, you need more time to fully experience this natural wonder. There are hotels in the surrounding area and campgrounds too. Some major landmarks to watch out for include Pravćická Brána or Pravćická Gate. Reaching a height of about 16 metres, it’s a rock formation in the shape of an archway. Tiské Stćny, meaning Tisa Walls, which also go by the name of Tisa Rocks, are sculpted sandstone pillars reaching a height of 30 metres. This attraction is popular with rock climbing enthusiasts and offers stunning views from the top. The gorges of the Kamenice River are another beauty to behold. The cliff walls tower at up to 150 metres. Another trekkers’ paradise, Lužnice Valley Hiking Trail’s 55-kilometre route is touted as one of Europe’s best. It leads through several nature reserves, forests, valleys, rocks, tunnels and historical and cultural sights. Mumlavský Vodopád or Mumlava Waterfall is a beautiful spot in Krkonoše National Park. It’s said to look different each time you see it, depending on the volume of water in the river. In winter, it’s frozen, in spring, the stream is strongest and in summer, water just trickles down. You can even enjoy a swim in the river at this time of the year. Due to the water’s force, the rocks at the foot of the waterfall are sculpted into deep bowl-like shapes where the water is collected; the deepest of these giant pots is three metres. Mumlava Waterfall is a destination in itself but also a starting point for hiking and biking trails. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site, Krkonoše National Park offers many. The park is nestled in the Krkonoše Mountains, which is the highest range in the country. Cable car riding is a popular summer activity, offering beautiful views of the rocky expanse. It’s mesmerising to witness the sunrise from atop the Snćžka – the tallest mountain in the range. You could hike your way to the summit or ride the cableway. Many plan their adventures before dawn so they can catch the first rays shooting across the horizon. ✤ fact magazine

AN ODE TO QATAR AND ITS WOMEN Budding artist, Maryam Ahmed, argues for the importance of art in society and its role in highlighting the strength of Qatari women.

M

aryam Ahmed, a rising star in the Qatari art scene, is making it to the top tier of artists in the country with her stunning portraits and awe-inspiring sculptures. Boasting themes of female empowerment and Qatari identity, her oil paintings, many of them live, feature prominent and graceful [mostly] female figures and elements of traditional wear. Using subtle hues and gold leaf backgrounds, she presents the Qatari woman as a powerful figure in society. “As a woman it means a lot to me to present women, as I understand their feelings. I love painting women and I believe Qatar is central to my art. Each of my paintings has been made in Qatar, inspired in Qatar, and made by Qatari hands. We work for the sake of Qatar,” she says with pride. Working with materials such as oil paint and pen, she also enjoys painting and drawing animals such as horses and eagles, which are native to the region. The artist is also

trying to develop herself as a sculptor. She says: “I always loved sculptures but didn't have the knowledge to make them. One day I saw an ad for a workshop on sculpting and I decided to go for it. I loved it and started to get better with practice. Now I like to sculpt head figures mostly.” Of her paintings, she explains: “I started out with colour pencils as a child, drawing cartoons and celebrities. As I matured, I started painting portraits and paying models to pose for me so I could paint them. “For my paintings, I start with an idea or a subject and arrange it on my iPad to see how it would look when finished, even with a frame and on a wall with lights,” she explains. Art has always been a part of Maryam’s life: “I have held on to it at my side, throughout school, college, marriage, motherhood and work. I never stop painting. The best thing is when I get to look at a finished work, whether it is sold or not. “I come from an artistic family. My father loves to collect

antiques, my mother loves to draw, and my older sister is an artist as well as an art teacher. As a child my mother always asked me to show off my drawings if we had some guests over at our house and I always received compliments. It always made me so happy.” Though art started as a personal hobby for Maryam, she has now sold a multitude of paintings, including portraits of the royal family. “In the beginning I was not interested in painting for financial benefit or selling. That was not my goal. I also did not like to be forced to paint a specific subject. I would not take requests. This contributed to the development of my own style and themes, until I had buyers who wanted to buy works that were my choice. This encouraged me and increased my confidence in myself.” With the limited time she has due to a busy schedule and family duties, most of Maryam’s work has now become requests: “I don’t mind it now and I even enjoy these requests because they push me to practice new skills. They challenge me and contribute to my development as an artist.” Maryam took some time off work between 2016 and 2021 to become a full-time artist. She was appointed at the Fire Station as an artist in residence for the span of nine months in 2016 and developed a website gallery store called ‘Iqtinaa’ (meaning ‘Acquisition’) where she sells her work. She also led workshops on portraiture and has illustrated a calendar, called the Qatar Wall Calendar 2022, bookmarks for the Doha Book Fair for the last four years, and a children’s book called The Traditional Games: Story Series by Dr. Maha Al Hendawy as per a request from Mathaf. The artist has also been a board member of the Qatar Fine Arts Society for the last three years. “The best moment came when I saw my paintings in the palace of His Highness Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. I went there to get details, take inspiration and get a feel for the colours in a certain area in the palace to work on a commissioned work requested by HH Shaikha Alanoud bint Hamad Al-Thani, and I saw two portraits that she bought back in 2014. I got so distracted just looking at them. It made me so happy.” Maryam was also visited by HH Shaikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani at her studio in the Fire Station. “She came to see my painting of His Highness Shaikh Tamim and was so impressed she immediately asked to purchase it.” Maryam also participated in a 5x5 exhibition at QM Gallery Katara, where she, along with four other artists, each chose five works to showcase. Maryam chose a group of female portraits which she named Power, Confidence, Stability, Calm, and Creativity, the first of which is extremely dear to her. The artist had her first solo exhibition in 2007 and has exhibited her work in Qatar, Algeria and Germany. When asked about what advice she would give to aspiring artists, she urges diligent practice and a confidence to ‘show your art' as well as seek a nurturing environment of likeminded people as ‘there are many artists that want to have connections and artistic friends’.

She then offers an additional word of encouragement: “We don’t need to change direction or go outside the box to prove ourselves. Realist artists face so many critics along the way but, for me, time has proven that our art is important and needed.” ✤

BIG SCREEN Persuasion Need to Know:

The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel published in 1817 under the same name. The romance revolves around Anne Elliot, a 27-year-old Englishwoman who, unlike other women of her age, isn’t married yet. She was once in love but was ‘persuaded’ by family and friends to end the relationship because her love interest was not a rich man. However, she deeply loves him and regrets her decision.

Director: Carrie Cracknell Cast: Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, Henry Golding, Richard E. Grant, Nikki Amuka-Bird

The film is a way to travel to the Amalfi Coast without leaving your sofa. The main attraction is undoubtedly the beautiful scenario where the story develops.

Under the Amalfi Sun Need to Know:

The film is an Italian romantic comedy and a sequel to Under the Riccione Sun. The story follows the young romance of Vicenzo and Camilla. However, just like its predecessor, the main character is the destination itself. The young couple put their love to the test on the picturesque Amalfi Coast in Italy while staying in Vincenzo's father’s incredible holiday house.

Director: Martina Pastori Cast: Lorenzo Zurzolo, Ludovica Martino, Davide Calgaro, Isabella Ferrari

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Despite being a centuries-old story, Persuasion is about love, a theme that never gets old. Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson) was once madly in love with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), but her family wouldn’t accept his humble origins and she decided to end the relationship. Eight years later, Captain Wentworth enters Anne’s life again, now in a much better position as a captain in the English Navy. However, though they are both still single, things between them are not clear and more complicated than expected. The story is lighthearted and full of unexpected twists. Fans of Austen’s work are not pleased with the adaptation, but they can’t deny that the movie is nicely produced with beautiful and well-researched costumes and the cast is spot on. Even the secondary characters’ performances make it worth a watch. If you enjoy romances with beautiful filmography and great actors, this is a good option for an easy watch with friends, family or, why not, in the company of your significant other.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The film is a way to travel to the Amalfi Coast without leaving your sofa. The main attraction is undoubtedly the beautiful scenario where the story develops. With impressive takes of Amalfi town, it will make you add this destination to your mustvisit places list. The story itself tells how young and mature adults navigate their love life. Vicenzo (Lorenzo Zurzolo) is a visually impaired young man who is ready to fully commit to his girlfriend Camilla (Ludovica Martino). However, after living apart for a year while she was studying in Canada, she is not so sure of her future with him. Meanwhile, their group of friends and Vicenzo’s parents are having their own doubts regarding their love lives. The story is very bland, but the secondary characters steal the scene and give some interesting insights to the plot. Extra attention goes to Vicenzo’s best friend Furio (Davide Calgaro) and his lack of love experience. The story itself is not exciting, but the cinematography takes you to this little piece of paradise and shows a taste of the life in this touristic destination during the summer months. A must-watch if you are not travelling this summer and want to virtually experience a sunny holiday on the Amalfi Coast.

POP ROCK

Entering Heaven Alive By Jack White

Emotional Creature By Beach Bunny

Released through Third Man Records, Entering Heaven Alive is American super star Jack White’s fifth studio album. It has an easy-going vibe, gentle and more acoustic. A contrast to Fear Of The Dawn that preceded it, which was primarily electric, more metallic. This one’s something you’d get if you were not to over-engineer. The album underscores White’s talent for roots-rock. I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love) has distinct jazz elements executed by pianist Quincy McCrary, which transform this centrepiece into a mini masterpiece. There are moments when the album exudes an early ‘70s energy. All Along The Way, which is one of a handful of numbers in which White is his own DIY one-man band, evokes a Paul McCartney feel as does the more surreal, guitar-less A Tree On Fire From Within in which White essentially plays lead bass through the whole tune. Olivia Jean, his newly wed wife and singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist joins him on the former. Love is a recurring theme throughout with tracks such as Queen Of The Bees or even Love Is Selfish, which deals with introspection. In If I Die Tomorrow, White muses on his early death. The album has a confessional rock feel with themes such as forgiveness as in Help Me Along. Or Please God, Don’t Tell Anyone, which is a plea to the deity for wrongs done in the past.

In October last year, Beach Bunny dropped the single Oxygen, followed by Fire Escape in March this year. It’s been a bit of a wait but Emotional Creature, the American rock band’s second album for Mom + Pop Music is worth it. Covering the full spectrum of emotions experienced in high school love stories, this sophomore album by Lili Trifilio and crew strikes a chord with most if not all. In the opener Entropy Trifilio wishes she didn’t have to hide a secret relationship. “Yeah, somebody's gonna figure us out And I hope they do 'cause I'm falling for you, whoa.” The album ends with the downtempo rock cut Love Song in which she is finally self-assured about her partner for what feels like the first time. While Karaoke captures the intoxicating beginnings of a new relationship, Weeds underscores a newfound emotional maturity in the way Trifilio realises how she deserves to be treated. All highlighting self-growth as both a person and songwriter. Whether one sees these puppy love anthems, so to speak, as borderline cringe or not, you can’t deny that everyone’s been there at some point. With lyrics that hit the nail on the head or, might we say, heart, and punchy, guitar-powered pop-rock music to complement, this album is one to watch out for.

By Karl Bartos If you are of a certain age, you may well have grown up with Kraftwerk – the German musical trio who introduced the world, or at least western Europe, to electronic music in the early ‘80s. Spawned by the incredibly fertile musical scene of late 1970s Dusseldorf, Kraftwerk gave us hits such as The Model, Tour De France and The Robots during an early career that has seen them dubbed one of the most important bands in modern music. Now Bartos lifts the lid of what it was like to be part of the scene unfolding at the famed Kling Klang studios during those heady days. Whether you’re a music lover, interested in the origins of today’s electronic sounds or just feeling a little nostalgic for the ‘good old days’, The Sound Of The Machine, officially due out in September, will be a captivating read.

What We’re (Still) Talking About Not So Friendly Tech

Plastic Not Fantastic

Up The Ladies

So, Google has apparently fired the engineer who contended that its AI had become sentient. We must admit, when that little gem of a claim first became public, it was a bit of a shocker. It’s all very well having machines that will do everything for us, from chatting to the elderly to deflecting enemy rockets, but do we really want them developing into thinking, feeling beings? Wouldn’t we then have to give them far more consideration than we currently do? There are some who argue that a

Social media erupted in fury after a plastic surgeon shared a Tik Tok video of procedures she would recommend for actress Natalia Dyer. Not surprisingly, fans told ‘expert’ Maranda Wilson that she must be crazy since the Stranger Things star is ‘drop-dead gorgeous’. One user even commented: “I could never be a celebrity because if someone made a video like this about me, I would get violent!” Having looked at the potential before and after, we have to agree that the suggested modifications would look

With all the excitement about the FIFA World Cup 2022, we’re sure it hasn’t escaped your notice that there was a rather significant footballing competition taking place in Europe during July – the women’s Euros. Hosted in England, stadia witnessed record turnouts for the later stage matches and, as we went to press, the English Lionesses were set to face either Germany or France in the finals at Wembley. Many have said how great it is to see the women’s teams getting the

machine will only ever be as good – read effective and efficient – as its programming. And those of us who are wary of the ever-greater advancement of AI can take some solace from this. However, when you look at stories of driverless cars crashing into people, the Tay chatbot, which quickly transformed into a deeply unpleasant persona, and the latest tale from Moscow in which a chess-playing robot grabbed and broke the finger of its seven-year-old opponent, you have to wonder if the rise of the machines is already here.

weird. But there’s a bigger question here. Where does a, supposed, professional get off in going after a complete stranger like this? It’s not as if the actress had asked for advice but Wilson just decided to air her views on how the actress’s face could be improved. Is this something that’s professionally acceptable in the Tik Tok age? All we can say is the plastic surgery business mustn’t be going very well if a practitioner has to come up with a gimmick like this for publicity – and we honestly hope Natalia Dyer never takes any of this person’s suggestions.

recognition they deserve and even David Beckham went on record wishing the Lionesses luck and saying how they have inspired his daughter, Harper. However, let’s not forget that though the teams playing their hearts out during the Euros are becoming little girls’ heroes, there are other women’s teams, particularly on the African continent, which has just hosted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where players are working two or three jobs to make a living while representing their countries. Fair pay for fair work, anyone?
