All work and no play…

Growing up in Bahrain, September was my favourite month – it still is! One of my happiest memories is waiting for the school bus as I enjoyed the perfect weather – a combination of warm sunlight and cool breeze.

For many of you, it’s back-to-school season. Rising early, packing lunches, running errands… the whole shebang! It’s going to be a crazy time, at least until you and your kids settle into the new routine. Hoping to make things slightly easier, this month, we bring you a collection of tips and tricks. From a parents’ survival guide to a back-to-school starter pack, we have it all. Our career quiz packs a punch so, make sure you get your children to take it – maybe you could give it a go too – hey, it’s never too late to pursue your passion! In other news, we are thrilled to reveal the Fact Dining Awards nominees in this issue! We have close to 800 entries across 55 categories, and this year, we introduce a bunch of new categories. Hurry and vote for your favourites! Elsewhere, you’ll find our experience cruising in the Volkswagen Touareg. Boy! This is one impressive luxury SUV. We also dined at a great, family-run seafood place tucked away in Adliya. The variety of rustic fish preparations blew us away – enough said! Go, check out our review.

There’s other bits, as always, to keep you entertained – movies, music, gadgets, travel and more.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue. Until then, breathe – you got this!

Architecturally, each villa showcases the distinctive colour palette

of the gem it is named after, creating a unique and captivating ambience. Sofitel Bahrain has sourced the finest materials and craftsmanship from around the world. Light fittings from Turkey, hand-crafted Zellige tiles from Morocco, rugs from India and the finest fabrics from France, Italy and the United Kingdom adorn the interiors.

‘PUTH’ YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR...

musical acts Charlie Puth, Maroon 5 and 50 Cent are among the exciting lineup of artists and bands set to perform in the Kingdom this season.

The good times keep coming as Al Dana Amphitheatre, one of the most happening live entertainment destinations in Bahrain, has announced thrilling concerts guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get your feet tapping.

American singer-songwriter and four-time Grammy-nominated hitmaker Charlie Puth is set to perform on September 29 at Exhibition World Bahrain. Making his first impression for going viral on YouTube with his soulful cover of Adele‘s Someone Like You, Charlie eventually cut his teeth co-writing tracks and producing songs for many other top artists, which included his breakout hit See You Again along with Wiz Khalifa that was part of the Fast & Furious 7 soundtrack.

It wasn’t long before he broke onto the scene delivering his own original music, starting with his 2015 debut, Marvin Gaye featuring American music artist, Meghan Trainor. In 2016, Puth released his debut studio album Nine Track Mind with the hit track We Don’t Talk Anymore that featured Selena Gomez and peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. He followed that up with his second album Voicenotes in 2018 that included the hit singles How Long and Attention

Charlie Puth has amassed eight multi-platinum singles, four Grammy nominations, three Billboard Music Awards, a Critic’s Choice Award and a Golden Globe nomination. His 2018 Grammynominated LP, Voicenotes had the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) gold certification only four days after its release and has logged more than 5.6 billion streams worldwide. Also performing later this year at Al Dana Amphitheatre are popular Irish pop group Westlife on October 29; sensational American pop rock band Maroon 5 on November 13; and Emmy and Grammy awards-winning hip-hop superstar Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson on November 23.

On October 26, three of the most iconic names in the Arab world will come together to ignite the stage with an electrifying performance. Catch Hussain Al Jassmi, Hanan Redha and Faisal Al Ansari live at Al Dana Amphitheatre. ✤

AN INNOVATIVE BLEND

After 20 years of dedicated research, Nespresso has launched N°20, a new and bespoke coffee.

With a dream to create the ultimate cup of coffee, Nespresso began identifying the finest Arabicas from its collection. After experimental plantings in Colombia, Nicaragua and Indonesia, N°20 was eventually found to thrive best in the soil of the Cauca and Caldas regions of Colombia. There, the coffee was grown by just 59 farmers who collectively planted and cared for one million coffee trees of this new and unique Arabica variety. The result is a coffee that boasts an exquisite taste profile, featuring enticing orange blossom aromas and fresh citrus notes. N°20 is Q certified by the Coffee Quality Institute, an independent non-profit organisation that designates high standards of quality in the coffee industry.

In keeping with Nespresso’s commitment to making coffee a force for good, the 59 farmers are part of the brand’s AAA Program and were consequently paid a premium as a reward for their investment in sustainable high quality.

Guillaume Le Cunff, Nespresso CEO, said: “N°20 is the

embodiment of Nespresso’s values: an obsession with perfection and a determination to innovate. Twenty years of dedication has resulted in an exquisite taste unlike anything that coffee lovers have tried before. I’m thrilled to be able to share this labour of love with people – its quality is a true testament to what decades of passion can produce!”

N°20 is a seasonal coffee, meaning you can enjoy its elegant and aromatic profile for a limited amount of time each year. Nespresso recommends you experience the subtle flavours of this blend as an espresso. It has been launched in the coffee cup-shaped Original capsules and will be available in the domeshaped Vertuo capsules next year. ✤

SURVIVAL GUIDE

Best Meal Of The Day

Make sure both you and your kids eat something before they head out the door. You may all have got into the habit of grabbing something mid-morning but it’s really important that they have brain fuel to concentrate before they get to class. Peanut butter and wholemeal toast is a great way to start the day and, if they really don’t want to eat first thing, it can always be wrapped for when the hunger strikes. Healthy after-school snacks are also important, so they don’t fill up before dinner. Make sure you stock up on fruit, yoghurts and other things they might like that won’t be over filling.

Say Goodnight

There’s nothing worse than sitting at your desk and struggling to keep your eyes open (trust us we know). Imagine how much worse it must be if you’re feeling like that and, at the same time, trying to take on board new facts and knowledge. Going back to school means getting back into a bedtime routine to make sure your kids have enough sleep to get them through the rigours of the day. If they, or you, are having trouble getting to sleep due to all the excitement of the new term, try relaxation sounds to help them nod off.

Keep It Clean

It’s an established fact that when kids start school, they initially pick up lots of germs from their new friends. The same can be said when they return to the classroom after a long break. Make sure their vaccinations are up to date and do some education about hand washing and sanitiser use before they head out the door to keep the worst of the lurgies out of your home.

Save The Date

Create a family calendar so everyone can see what’s coming up – when does PE kit need to go to school? When is Fatima’s birthday party? What’s planned for the weekend? – it gives everyone things to look forward to and helps stay organised. You could also include a homework timetable to keep your youngster on track.

Limit Screen Time

Yes, it might not be a popular one but, given the amount of lesson time spent on screens, it’s a really good idea to limit screen time at home. Make a plan that you and the kids can agree on and instead try to spend that time doing something as a family – yes, that means parents also have to limit their screen time, which may not be a bad thing.

MAKING THE MOVE

With the start of the new academic year, many students will be making the transition from local schools to boarding or university overseas. It’s an exciting time of making new friends and gaining maturity. However, it can also present some nerves, both for students and parents, and it may feel overwhelming trying to juggle everything at once. Use these suggestions from St George’s University, Grenada, to help everyone cope.

Stay Connected

Students may miss their former school community. So, it’s important for them to stay connected with their social circle, family and friends. Setting up WhatsApp groups in advance of leaving can help with this. What's equally as important is staying connected to themselves and being in touch with their own emotions. Journalling about personal experiences and expressing the feelings that accompany these events is always better than bottling them up.

Get Organised

Being organised can help students adapt more smoothly to their new surroundings and responsibilities. For example, students can more efficiently plan what they would like to do during the first week on campus if they have organised their agenda in advance. This habit will also help them plan other areas in their life, such as organising their schedule to know when to study and when to take time out.

Don’t Make Comparisons

Students going overseas might find themselves thinking that other people are managing the transition better than them, but this can be detrimental to their confidence and well-being. All students will have come from different backgrounds and it’s important that they focus on their own goals and progress.

Connect With Peers

It’s always a good idea for students to connect with the cohort who planning to go to the same place before the academic year starts. It will help enhance the student’s overall experience and ease the transition into a new academic environment. Building a network of friends even before arriving could give a sense of belonging and support.

Learn To Relax

Learning how to relax will not only help students as they psychologically prepare themselves to start university or boarding school, but it will also help during stressful exam periods and in other aspects of life they may encounter in the future. Practising relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, meditation, muscle relaxation exercises, deep breathing and mental or guided imagery could help students focus on being calm and thinking clearly.

To summarise, some students may find the transition to boarding school or university life stressful, especially if it involves travelling abroad. However, there are ways to cope with the anticipation of making new friends, academic pressures and leaving familiar support systems behind. If students still find themselves looking for guidance, they should not be shy about asking at their school or university, which will be experienced in dealing with various issues.

BUILT TO MEET YOUR CHALLENGES

FACT spent the day in Volkswagen's Touareg, an impressive luxury SUV housing several innovations.
• ISLAND RIDES
ISLAND RIDES •

This month, FACT experienced Volkswagen’s (VW) premium class construction capabilities in the form of the Touareg, compliments of Behbehani Brothers. We were pleasantly surprised to discover this dynamic SUV is jampacked with the latest high-end technology and equipped with the most convenience and comfort features ever integrated within a VW vehicle.

Exterior

The Touareg we experienced was no less than the fullyloaded R-Line model. Starting at the front end, we appreciated numerous features emphasising the dynamic character of this luxury SUV. These included the wide, assertive chrome grille, complete with ‘R-Line’ badging, that effortlessly extends into the LED matrix headlights. Adding further touches of class are the Gloss Black front air intake and the R-specific bodycoloured bumper.

At the flanks, our eyes were drawn to the distinctive 21-inch, R-Line alloy wheels protected by R-specific wheel-arch trims. We found the crisp lines of the Touareg’s exterior to flow seamlessly from bonnet to boot, endowing the vehicle with a unique, sporty yet distinguished style. Sleek silver roof rails add to the capable character of this attractive SUV.

The athletic and elegant nature of our Touareg was underscored at the back end through the inclusion of a stylish R-specific diffuser, dynamic LED combination rear taillamps, a roof spoiler and chrome trapezoid tailpipes located on both sides above the R-specific body-coloured rear bumper.

Interior

As we slipped inside the cockpit, the sporty and dynamic attitude of the exterior gave way to the calm and relaxing feel of the interior. This serene space is made possible through the ample room, meticulous craftsmanship and the technologically advanced comfort.

One of our favourite internal features was the 14-way active, front, climate-controlled seats. This uber-comfy seating provides electric adjustment for the seat height, seat length, seat cushion angle and backrest angle, along with four-way electrically adjustable lumbar support. Also included are a memory function option for the driver’s seat and door mirror, along with an optional massage function that provides the choice of eight independently, pneumatically controlled settings via air cushions. From this supportive and elevated front seating, we admired the ergonomically designed, driver-orientated cockpit, with all the vehicle’s advanced technology perfectly placed for ultimate convenience.

The exclusive Touareg R-Line-specific interior styling means extra attention to detail with high-quality materials and finishes present throughout. The multifunction steering wheel features the R-Line logo, complemented by stainless steel pedals and ‘Wave’ aluminium decorative inlays in the dash and doors.

‘Soul’ black roof lining and R-Line stainless steel front-door sill protectors provide the finishing touches. With ample rear room for three passengers, reclining rear seats

that split and fold in a 40:20:40 ratio and a luggage compartment capacity of 810-litres, we found the generous proportions of VW’s Touareg to ensure flexibility and everyday functionality.

Infotainment

The 2023 Touareg features a pioneering first for Volkswagen, namely its Discover Premium high-resolution, 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system that merges seamlessly into the high-resolution 12-inch Digital Cockpit. VW have removed almost all protruding buttons, knobs and dials from the setup, meaning we effortlessly accessed and controlled the functions and systems by touch, gesture and voice. The home screen offers smartphone-like customisation, with all operating systems controlled through the central interface.

A must-mention feature is the Head-up Display projected directly onto the front windscreen through the touch of a button. This display provides information in the driver’s primary field of vision, meaning eyes can remain on the road ahead.

Power, Performance & Safety

The Touareg is powered by a capable 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine that produces 450Nm of torque and an overall power output of 340hp. These figures translate to a respectable 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds.

The Touareg comes with an off-road driving mode and felt at home on virtually all terrain types displaying exceptional stability on unstable surfaces.

We appreciated many aspects of the Touareg’s performance capabilities, including the all-wheel steering that ensures tricky cornering and parking is much easier. We loved how the air suspension adapts the car height to the terrain, always ensuring a high level of comfort. Providing further precision and agility to the driving experience is the electromechanical active roll

stabilisation. We found it to react quicker at lower speeds than conventional stabilisers, even when tackling rougher terrain.

To ensure the well-being of all occupants, VW has included a full suite of safety and driver-assistance features. This extensive list includes an optional innovative Night Vision System that uses infrared beams to scan an area up to 130 metres ahead, detecting thermal radiation and projecting an image onto your Digital Cockpit or Head-up Display.

The Touareg is now on offer, starting from BD21,999 with three years'/45,000km service, three years' roadside assistance and five years' / 200,000km extended warranty. ✤

NEW SUV MAKES REGIONAL DEBUT

FACT was among a handful of publications invited to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the big reveal of the all-new Hyundai Kona, a multi-talented SUV-B that boasts a hybrid variant and a whole host of advanced features.

• REGIONAL RIDES

Hyundai Motor Company Middle East and North Africa - Regional Headquarters hosted us in the JAX District of the Saudi capital for an exciting first-hand view of the new vehicle’s class-leading design upgrade as well as its advanced safety and comfort features.

With one of the most comprehensive product packages in the B-SUV segment, this second-generation Kona offers a wide range of engines giving drivers the choice of either hybrid (HEV) or internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrain options in addition to the N Performance version of each. An all-electric EV variant will follow soon in selected markets.

First Look

Our first impression was that Hyundai have reconfigured the new model with active drivers and their families in mind who’ll be served by the unique proportions and increased dimensions. At 4.355m long, it’s 17.5cm longer than the previous generation, with a wheelbase of 2.66cm, an increase of 6cm. It is also wider and higher giving a feeling of improved strength and sturdiness. Between the aerodynamic front and tailgate, sculpted wheel arches and parametric surfaces give a feeling of pure volume, with dynamic lines of chrome connecting the belt line to the rear

spoiler and integrated high stop lamp. The bright exterior colours further emphasise the iconic design.

N Performance versions offer an extremely capable family vehicle with a little extra pizzaz, featuring black mirrors, an optional black spoiler and roof, more aggressive front and rear styling with a wing-shaped bumper to emphasise the lowered stance, dual exhausts and silver-painted trim.

Designed For Life

Making use of the model's improved dimensions, Hyundai’s designers created a larger interior ‘living space’ to suit a wide range of lifestyles. The driver-focused front row is accentuated by a horizontal floating C-panel with integrated dual 12.3-inch panoramic displays that underscore the model’s tech-savvy personality.

As part of the interior upgrades, the gearbox shifter has been moved from the centre console to behind the steering wheel via paddle shifters, allowing for more storage. The new design imparts a feeling of space and comfort which is reinforced by the fact that all the driver's controls are now found around the steering wheel. Ambient lighting is also supported by over-theair maintenance updates and new features.

The comfort reclining seat option for the first row has been optimised for ‘weightless’ body pressure distribution to help

fact magazine 47
REGIONAL RIDES •

reduce fatigue after driving by adjusting to the body’s natural positioning. A reclining option in the second row also ups the comfort level for passengers.

The fully folding second-row seat and rear deck offer up to 466 litres of cargo space and loading anything from luggage to shopping bags is easier than ever thanks to the convenient Smart Tailgate customisable interior that enhances access to luggage space.

Convenience Via Technology

Inside, dual 12.3-inch panoramic displays are integrated into the audio and video navigation (AVN) system to give drivers an immersive digital experience. And the 2023 KONA will be the first Hyundai model to implement the new Vehicle Connected Cockpit (ccNC), which provides advanced graphics and a perfect match between vehicle displays. When parking, the Surround View Monitor (SVM) displays the vehicle from different vantage points for safe and easy parking while wide-projection LED headlights illuminate the road.

The second-generation Kona is equipped with the next level of Hyundai SmartSense Advanced Driver Assistance System features not available in most other B-SUVs, ensuring the highest levels of safety and comfort on the road.

The Driver Condition Monitoring (DSM) system uses the vehicle's interior camera to analyse the driver's face and, if drowsy or careless, alerts or intervenes, if necessary. The Smart Parking System (RSPA) helps drivers enter and exit parking spaces remotely. Pressing the smart key button moves the vehicle forward or backward.

The Blind Spot Vision Monitor (BVM) assists when the driver changes lane by sounding an alert to warn of the risk of collision with vehicles in the blind spot. If necessary, the brakes are applied automatically to prevent a collision.

The all-new Kona model is also packed with various other safety aids such as Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Collision Avoidance (BCA), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW) and High Beam Assist (HBA). It is also equipped with many driving comfort functions, such as Intelligent Cruise Control (SCC), Navigation-Based Intelligent Cruise Control (NSCC), Lane Departure System (LFA) and Highway Driving Assistance (HDA).

Entertainment

Bose engineers have fine-tuned the Bose premium audio system with eight speakers plus a subwoofer to deliver a rich and immersive listening experience. Driver and passengers alike have access to two USB-C charging devices (one with data support) and a 12V power outlet in the front as well as two USB-C charging devices in the rear. The Kona is also equipped with the latest version of Hyundai's connectivity technology and Bluelink music and video service will be made available later.

Our Verdict

We were impressed with the muscular, dynamic design of this upgraded model – which has been a firm favourite since its launch back in 2017. With the increased dimensions and numerous technological advancements, all-new KONA is true to the model’s distinctive character while offering an even safer, more connected and even more comfortable experience. ✤

The Deputy CEO of Spring Travel & Tourism W.L.L. talks about his love for travel, what sets his agency apart from others in the market and the Kingdom as a global tourism hub.

You’re a mechanical engineer by qualification and have worked in the banking sector for more than a decade. How did you finally realise that your true calling was travel and tourism?

When I enrolled in university in 1997, tourism was not an accredited programme. Tourism did not exist in people's consciousness, despite a passion for travel and an interest in exploring other cultures and learning about them. The majority of my work in the banking sector was in administration. During the last 14 years, I have satisfied my passion for travel by visiting more than 60 countries across the globe. A milestone, in 2015, was the establishment of Spring Travel and Tourism Company, which was founded with the intent to serve people from all over the region. Today, we have more than 20,000 customers and not only from the Kingdom. We successfully raise the Bahrain name on many occasions.

What sets Spring Travel & Tourism W.L.L. apart from other agencies on the island?

We have made extraordinary efforts toward direct and indirect presence since the company’s inception. We have focused on providing quality services throughout the customers’ journey, from the moment they contact us through any communication channel until they return from their trip, to give them the best travel and tourism experience, based on our cumulative knowledge. Additionally, we're one of the few agents in the GCC market who provide comprehensive services including reservations, visas, SIM cards and many others, as a one-stop-shop for all your travel and tourism needs. Travellers can enjoy peace of mind by choosing the best airlines, hotels, transportation and guides during their trip.

You have more than 15 years’ experience in this industry. What’s your view of Bahrain as a tourism hub?

It is my belief that Bahrain is well equipped and possesses the

elements that make it the centre of attraction for tourism, including beaches, archaeological sites, Formula 1 racing, shopping centres, associated events and international conferences. Also, Bahrain has entertainment centres that make it a popular tourist destination for families.

Spring Travel & Tourism released the Happiness Guide earlier this year? What according to it are the top three summer holiday spots, considering the temperatures aren’t going to drop anytime soon?

Every year, Spring Travel issues a booklet containing summer trips – the Happiness Guide – six months before summer. Preparation for summer is a big topic for us. During this process, all hotels will be visited, partners will be met and a balanced programme will be implemented to meet customers’ needs. In this booklet, you'll find all the information you need to know about your trip such as the tourism route, weather forecast, currency, visa requirements, etc. Türkiye, Austria and BosniaHerzegovina are among the most popular tourist destinations with our customers.

You’ve visited almost 70 countries so far. Tell us about your most memorable trip.

Since I've been travelling for years, I've been to 69 countries across six continents, and each country offers different attractions and programmes. It is very difficult to choose one but the most memorable was Iceland, where I drove and saw waterfalls, mountains, lakes, valleys and the aurora borealis. During the next six months, I will be visiting four new places: Antarctica, Rwanda, Uganda and Greenland. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

You’ve just moved to Bahrain. What made you decide to come here and how are you finding living on the island?

I have experience working in different markets in North Africa, therefore it was a great opportunity for me to get the experience of working and exploring the GCC market as well. Moreover, the weather here is just perfect for me. Although it’s still my first month in Bahrain, I can say that I really love the country and I can feel the hospitality here from everyone.

Engy El Mekawy

Marketing Manager, First Motors

What do you think makes the Genesis and Hyundai brands stand out from others in the market?

I think Hyundai and Genesis are great brands, covering both the mass car segment and luxury segment. The diversity of the models in both brands allows us to offer products to a wider audience. This is definitely supported by the outstanding aftersales services and the exquisite customer experience provided by First Motors, which strengthen both brands.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the automotive industry?

I have always had a passion for cars, so I can only thank destiny for giving me the opportunity of drawing my career path in the automotive field since a very young age. Moreover, I’ve always believed that anyone can succeed in any field! As long as you are dedicated and committed, you can overcome any hardships that may arise. A wise man once told me: “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. Success is not final; failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.”

How does your native Verona city in Italy, inspire your love for food?

My native city, Verona in Italy, has had a profound influence

on my love for food. It is known for its rich culinary heritage and the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients. Growing up, I was exposed to a wide variety of flavours and cooking techniques. This has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of using seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients to create dishes that are both delicious and authentic. Verona's vibrant food culture has shaped my culinary style and continues to inspire me to create memorable dining experiences for guests.

What is your signature dish and how does it reflect your personal style?

My signature dish is a traditional Italian creation called Gamberi alla busara. It originates from the coastal regions of Italy, particularly in the north-eastern part of the country, and is prepared using fresh, succulent prawns (gamberi) cooked in a rich tomato-based sauce. The sauce is typically made with garlic, onions, tomatoes, white grape and a variety of aromatic herbs and spices. The prawns are simmered in this flavourful sauce until they become tender and aromatic. The dish is usually served hot, garnished with fresh parsley and accompanied by crusty bread or pasta. The combination of the sweet and tender prawns with the tangy tomato sauce creates a harmonious balance. It is a dish that celebrates the freshness of seafood and the simplicity of Italian cooking. Gamberi alla busara reflects my personal style by showcasing my love for using fresh, high-quality ingredients and my passion for creating dishes that highlight the natural flavours of the ingredients. It also represents my dedication to preserving the authenticity of traditional Italian recipes and bringing them to life for guests to enjoy. ✤

A SATIATING SOJOURN

Lawson Misquitta experienced a dazzling showcase of Italy’s best at the delightful Mondo, Taste of Italy.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

On the same floor as the lobby of the wonderful Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa is a little gem that’s well known for serving authentic Italian preparations – Mondo, Taste of Italy. We arrived at the restaurant, a larger group than usual, and I found myself particularly delighted since our strength in numbers guaranteed the probability of us being much keener to explore more of Mondo’s broad menu. Heads up – we did!

The spacious interior has been gracefully designed, combining wood panelling and red-brick accents to evoke a sense of stepping into a rustic restaurant that could be stumbled upon on a visit to an old Italian town.

Having dodged the sweltering summer heat, we first scoured the drinks menu and quickly placed our orders, and soon a colourful round of Orange Sunset, Blue Hawaiian and Pink Lady arrived at our table. Cold, refreshing and flavourful we were pleased and ready to kick off our meal. We were also served a complimentary round of thin-crust garlic bread slices along with a tasty sundried tomato sauce.

Then commenced our lunch. First to arrive at our table was a plate of Octopus Salad. Fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, olives, orange segments and capers came doused in a wonderful extra virgin olive oil and lemon dressing. It set the stage for the meaty, tender and perfectly cooked octopus slices, which brought a mildly sweet and pleasantly oceanic taste to the light and enlivening salad.

Alongside this we were served Burrata Pugliese, a creamy, buttery mozzarella from Puglia that came with long, thin strips of charred bell pepper. I’ve had similar iterations of this dish before but mostly paired with tomatoes of various sorts. Unlike them, the texture and the subdued sweetness of the peppers embraced the creaminess and saltiness of the cheese in the most perfect union. Paired with the intense pesto sauce and the umami eggplant purée, this quartet of flavours melded together perfectly as they sang the sweetest of melodies to my taste buds. Oh, happy days!

Next came the Carpaccio of Angus Beef, a palatable serving of marinated raw Angus beef, parmesan cheese, capers and rocket. The beef was so thinly sliced that it immediately melted in our mouths, and the liberal splash of white truffle oil rounded off each bite ever so divinely.

This was followed by two pizzas and a pasta. We tried the Diavola and the Pescatora. Both the pizzas had a great crust that wasn’t too thick or overly thin, it sat perfectly in that sweet spot, balancing between chewy to thin and crispy, which I appreciated. The Diavola was topped with a delicious fior di latte mozzarella and spicy beef salami. While the Pescatora was a feast from the sea with abundant toppings of prawns, calamari, mussels and again, more of that amazing olive oil. The Lobster Spaghetti was an indulgent pasta made up of simple but phenomenal flavours. All of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

For the main course, first came the Veal Chop Milanese, a traditional Milanese dish that comes with a bone-in veal chop pounded until very thin and tender, which is then seasoned, breaded and pan-fried. Served with crushed potatoes that were strongly imbued with garlic and rosemary. The serving was big,

fact magazine 70 • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

but the fusion of the taste, textures and flavours was even more immensely flavourful.

Next came the Grilled Salmon. In my humble opinion, this is the best way to prepare this fish, since grilling maintains the flavour and firm texture of the salmon while still retaining that succulent soft bite, and it also makes the skin exceedingly crispy – just as it was on our plates. Placed stylishly over asparagus, topped with grilled prawns and served with a creamy pink peppercorn sauce, this was among my favourites.

The final main course was the Island Style Seabass. The fish here was cooked in an oven and it was very flaky, moist and juicy with a buttery, tender texture compared to the salmon. Moreover, the dish was mildly flavoured with thyme, Heirloom tomatoes and the thinnest slices of potato, all of which were complementary but let the spotlight stay on that fabulous seabass. It truly was a unanimous hit at the table!

For dessert, we tried the tiramisu which looked irresistible and tasted even better. While the Rich Chocolate Soufflé we indulged in had this delicious velvety molten centre and was served with a mouth-watering Madagascar vanilla gelato. But a clear standout was the Semmifreddo al Limone that was a combination of lemon cake, almond and pistachio crust together with a luscious berry coulis. The sweet preparations met and even exceeded our expectations.

We thoroughly enjoyed Mondo’s extensive menu, a true celebration of classic flavours with a modern twist. The various dishes we savoured showcased some of the best that Italy has to offer right here in Bahrain. We truly had a great time and look forward to our next visit. ✤

FROM EGYPT WITH LOVE

• DINING DELIGHT
Liz O’Reilly paid a visit to a man who’s a legend on the Bahrain dining scene and discovered Uncle Hamed’s fame is well deserved.
DINING DELIGHT •

Restaurants and chefs come and go in Bahrain’s ever evolving hospitality sector. So, if you’ve gained a loyal following that still clamours for your food after almost 30 years in the business, you must be doing something right!

Such is the case with Uncle Hamed, the Egyptian-Bahraini chef who first started offering his irresistible Alexandrian-influenced seafood to local diners back in 1995. After various iterations of his kitchen, he opened Uncle Hamed’s Seafood Restaurant at The Curv Mall– Adliya around a year ago and both prices and quality ensure the place is always buzzing.

A simple, single-room establishment decorated in aqua blues and whites with comfy chairs and fish motifs giving a nautical theme, the overwhelming atmosphere is of a friendly welcome – you immediately feel as if you are one of the family and this is, indeed, a family affair with Uncle Hamed overseeing the kitchen and his son Mohammed taking on the role of genial host.

First to our table came a selection of salads. The Egyptian baba ghanouj is closer to what, in Bahrain, is called moutabel and benefits from grill-cooked eggplants for a deliciously smoky taste. My Egyptian dining companion explained that there is a subtle variation in terms of the spices used which makes all the difference.

A plate of round, golden-roasted eggplant slices topped with gritty spices, reminiscent of harissa, with crunchy dried chilli and coriander seeds, could have been a meal in itself. The richness of the oil saturating the yielding flesh of the vegetable created a uniquely flavourful, almost pulpy texture.

A typical Alexandrian dish of long, thin pickled eggplants, marinated for 24 hours with spices and tomatoes, introduced a zesty, salty bite. And a beetroot salad redolent with garlic and sesame also benefitted from a 24-hour marination. I am a big fan of beetroot but have never tasted anything quite like it. The combination of sweetness with the nutty tang of the sesame, piquant roasted garlic and high-quality olive oil made for a masterful blend that I kept going back to throughout our meal (and joyfully took home too).

Various other plates teemed with tasty, fresh tomatoes, chopped vegetables, green leaves and dill. The Egyptian version of tahini, with its authentic blend of spices, sat alongside Uncle Hamed’s own secret sauce – I detected a hint of Dijon mustard together with subtle herbs and spices – inviting us to dip the traditional morsels of crunchy, deep fried Arabic bread. Heaven!

Two soups, one indulgently creamy, the other a translucent tomato-based broth, tickled our taste buds with abundant plump prawns and other tasty seafood.

Then, it was time for the main event. The fish. And I was delighted when we were presented with plastic gloves, allowing us to dig deep to secure the tastiest chunks of meat from each plate that adorned the table.

Now, one thing to know about Uncle Hamed’s is that the menu simply lists the variety of fish available from hammour and safi to seabass and salmon. But, the method of cooking is the important thing. So, I attempted to get an education, while sampling dish after delicious dish, each more tempting than the last. We were mostly served sea bream, but the methods of cooking rendered each plate a masterpiece. First came a very

fact magazine 74
• DINING DELIGHT

traditional option cooked Rada style – the exterior coated in wheat bran – and blackened on the grill. No oil is used in the preparation resulting in a very clean flavour profile that’s both healthy and delicious.

Sea bream with garlic, lemon and olive oil also presented a very simple taste, the chef’s expertise shown in that the lemon and garlic didn’t overpower the delicate sweetness of the fish, which was cooked to perfection, flaky but still firm and not at all dry. A definite favourite at our table was the sea bream Singari. The fish is marinated with coriander, parsley, garlic, herbs, chilli and lemon juice and then stuffed with sautéed onion, peppers, tomatoes, carrots and spices before being baked on a bed of sliced potatoes. It was simply divine. The potatoes picked up the flavour of the fish, while the fish itself absorbed the different juices from the vegetables.

Another take on this, and a surprise even to my dedicated Egyptian foodie dining companion, was a sea bream Singari with béchamel sauce. Boasting all the robust flavours of its counterpart, the addition of the rich, creamy sauce, lightly browned and totally aromatic, rendered this already excellent dish a triumph of flavours and textures.

We were also served a whole deep-fried fish which, I have to admit, looked a little off-putting to me, my slightly squeamish Western sensibilities not at all sure about staring my food in the eye, but the sight of my begloved companion digging in to the crunchy skin and soft flesh soon allayed my reticence and I joined in. Honestly, fish skin really shouldn’t taste so good – crispy and salty with just a faint tang of the seashore giving way to delicately soft meat. I’ll admit it, I’m a convert!

Alongside the full-fish platters, we were also served crispy fried shrimps and calamari – piping hot, their crunchy coating perfect for dipping in the tahini and secret sauce. And a bowl of nalta jute (molokhia), minced leaf soup. Slightly viscous and redolent with garlic and coriander, it gave a true taste of the land of the pharaohs – it’s a dish that’s served across Egypt coming with just vegetables or chicken, meat or prawns depending on the wealth of the diner.

Though there was still an array of rices, salads and various fish on the table, I was reaching my limit, so my last spoonful to try came in the form of the Tagine Uncle Hamed. And, my goodness, I chose well. Bursting with a combination of lightly sweet and savoury hints, big juicy chunks of tomato joined herbs and spices in a rich sauce enveloping a generous helping of succulent prawns. Tangy lemon, feisty coriander, gentle parsley and sweet paprika combined to render the gravy a sublime flavour explosion and I can happily say that, having taken home leftovers, this magical dish only improved the next day.

With not a centimetre of stomach space left, I can honestly say, Uncle Hamed’s is a restaurant everyone should try – but go hungry and get there early, you won’t be the only one eager to dive into this amazing seafood experience. ✤

A PIZZA PERFECTION

We, at FACT, are pizza lovers, loud and proud. So, we’re always curious when there’s a new name on the box. We tucked into a feast from Francesco’s to find out what’s cooking down in Juffair.

Francesco’s, the New York-Italian pizzeria, has been around in Bahrain for some time but, earlier this year, international franchiser Foodvest took over the company and set it up as a ghost kitchen alongside its recently refurbished outlets in American Alley. The pies are all made fresh on the premises with your choice of generous toppings and then sent on their way to you, piping hot and full of flavour.

Obviously, Francesco’s is about more than just pizza and we started with the best-selling vegetarian option of garlic knots. Baked, fluffy knots of dough infused with garlic butter and stuffed with parmesan. Their gently rounded exterior glistening and topped with parsley. Served with a generous helping of gorgonzola ranch, these were like morsels of paradise and I had to stop myself going in for second and third servings to keep space for what was to come.

We also snacked on some mozzarella sticks – creamy cheese, coated in breadcrumbs and served with aioli sauce – before diving into the big boxes.

Our first pizza was the Brooklyn Pie and our mouths were watering at the delicious aroma before we ever touched a slice. The crispy thin base was coated in garlic and tomato paste and then topped with mozzarella, beef pepperoni, ricotta, oregano and homemade Italian sausage. Together, the combination of tastes and textures was amazing but it was that special homemade sausage that really gave this pie its edge, its delicate combination of spices perfectly complementing the deliciously melting cheeses for a taste of the Italian coast.

fact magazine 77 FOODIE CORNER •

Next up came the White Pie, a new one on me and totally lush. Another thin, crispy crust bore an alfredo base redolent with cream and garlic and loaded with melted mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan and oregano. I managed just one slice of this, the sheer volume of delicious, melted cheese making for a supremely rich bite that was almost a meal in itself.

We also tried a couple of fire subs. Another new experience for me, these were apparently invented by former firefighters and they would certainly be easier than a regular pizza to eat on the go. Created from fluffy, oven-roasted dough, folded over like a sandwich, we had the Bronx and the Great Jones. The Bronx was filled with beef pepperoni, balsamic caramelised onions, roasted red peppers, mozzarella, feta, parmesan and tomato sauce. While its counterpart the Great Jones, stuffed with turkey ham, mozzarella, loads of ricotta, alfredo sauce and a generous helping of fiery jalapeños, was my favourite. Each was substantial, a real meal and a half and the heat from the jalapeños made for a fire sub in more ways than one. I’d definitely order this again.

We followed up with generous dishes of pasta – chicken alfredo and old-fashioned spaghetti with meatballs. The alfredo was creamy with homemade sauce packed with mushrooms and grilled chicken. Real comfort food for the soul and just an absolute delight. And the meatballs came with a classic tomato sauce teeming with fresh basil, garlic, rosemary and oregano. Such a wonderful combination of herbs, the dish was bursting with flavour and would make a great option if you’re having

guests over and want to spoil them. So, if you’re looking to impress visitors or just want a great New York-Italian experience at home, we’d highly recommend you try the new version of Francesco’s. With a great menu full of lots of options from Buffalo chicken wings to mac and cheese and 14 different pizza options, there’s something for everyone and the portion sizes are great, so you’ll definitely have your fill. ✤

A JOURNEY INTO CULTURE

• TRAVEL
Chirine Halabi headed to Vienna for a stay immersed in history, art and more.
TRAVEL • VOLKSGARTEN © WIEN TOURISMUS/CHRISTIAN STEMPER

Iadore the cultural side of Qatar, especially our many museums and galleries, so when an invitation came to visit Vienna, home of some of Europe’s finest collections, I jumped at the chance.

I was delighted to be staying at The Leo Grand Hotel Vienna which enjoys a privileged location in the heart of the city, providing guests with convenient access to Vienna's most prominent landmarks and attractions. Situated within close proximity to the renowned Stephenplatz, this exquisite hotel is surrounded by a vibrant array of shopping arcades, fine dining establishments and cultural gems. This storied hotel holds a rich historical past, tracing its origins back to the grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Initially established as a luxurious palace in the 19th century, The Leo Grand has stood witness to Vienna's shifting cultural landscape. Over the years, it has been meticulously renovated, preserving its timeless elegance while incorporating modern amenities to cater to the needs of discerning guests.

Design, Technology and Luxury

Stepping inside The Leo Grand Hotel Vienna, guests are immediately struck by its opulent design and attention to detail. The interior seamlessly blends classic elements with cutting-edge technology, creating a truly remarkable ambience. The fusion of exquisite furnishings and intelligent lighting systems adds a touch of modernity to the timeless elegance of the property.

The Patio Deluxe room I enjoyed offers a sanctuary of comfort and luxury. The carefully curated furniture and décor exude sophistication and refinement. Guests can indulge in the convenience of controlling lights, temperature

and even the television through the tablet provided in each room. I found the system easy to operate and this seamless integration of technology into the hotel's design ensures guests can enjoy a personalised and comfortable stay. The hotel’s commitment to guest satisfaction extends to the smallest details, such as the distinctive blue towels and deep bathtubs. The luxurious bathrooms offer a haven of relaxation, inviting guests to unwind in the comfort of their elegantly designed private sanctuaries. And there is a range of accommodation types available including Grand Deluxe rooms and suites such as the truly majestic, two-floor Leopold Suite.

Food Glorious Food

DOTS at The Leo Grand is the gorgeous restaurant found in the Baroque inner courtyard, a hot spot in the city centre, offering avant-garde fusion cuisine accompanied by relaxed tunes in a wonderful location. The hotel prides itself on providing an exceptional culinary experience and I was very happy to start with its delectable breakfast menu. Guests are treated to a wide array of fresh and locally-sourced delicacies, catering to various dietary preferences and ensuring a delightful start to the day. I took full advantage of a hearty early feast, perfect to set me up for a day of cultural exploration.

Out And About

Vienna, the enchanting capital of Austria, is a treasure trove of art and culture, boasting a myriad of world-class museums. Within close proximity to The Leo Grand Hotel, visitors have the opportunity to explore the rich artistic heritage of the city. While strolling from the hotel to

these museums, one can also indulge in delightful dining experiences and indulge in some retail therapy, enhancing the overall Viennese experience.

The Belvedere is a magnificent palace complex that houses two prominent museums: the Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere. The upper is renowned for its impressive collection of Austrian art, including the iconic masterpiece ‘The Kiss’ by Gustav Klimt, my favourite painting of all time. This museum showcases a wide range of artworks ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. Just a short walk from the Leo Grand, visitors can enjoy the picturesque views of the palace gardens. Along the way, you will pass charming cafés and restaurants, offering the ideal opportunity to savour the world-famous Viennese delicacies or enjoy a cup of coffee.

A stone's throw away from the Belvedere is the Albertina Museum, home to one of the most important graphic art collections in the world. Visitors can immerse themselves in the works of renowned artists such as Dürer, Monet, Picasso and many more. Easily accessible on foot from the hotel, as you traverse the streets, you can explore fashionable boutiques, upscale shopping malls and traditional Viennese markets – yes, I added a touch of retail therapy to my cultural excursion.

The Leopold Museum, another notable institution, is situated in the MuseumsQuartier, a short distance from The Leo Grand Hotel. Dedicated to Austrian modern art, it showcases an extensive collection of works by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. The neighbourhood is known for its trendy cafés,

vibrant bars and boutique shops, offering a delightful blend of cultural immersion and urban exploration.

I also made my way to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, located near the famous Ringstrasse, which is a true gem for art lovers. This magnificent museum, and I have to emphasise the word MAGNIFICENT, houses an extraordinary collection of fine art, including works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Titian. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll from the Leo Grand Hotel, marvelling at the stunning architecture and grandeur of Vienna's Ringstrasse. Along the way, I discovered many elegant restaurants serving traditional Viennese cuisine, and returned to savour the city's culinary delights while enjoying the splendid surroundings.

The Leo Grand Hotel is surrounded by high-end shops, including designer boutiques and luxury department stores, where you can find the latest fashion trends and unique souvenirs. For foodies, Vienna is a paradise, with a wide range of restaurants serving traditional Austrian cuisine, as well as international dishes. Some of the must-try dishes include Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz and Sachertorte, a chocolate cake that is a Viennese speciality.

In terms of things to do, Vienna has something for everyone, from visiting historic landmarks such as St. Stephen's Cathedral, Schönbrunn Palace and the state opera house to exploring the city's museums and art galleries. The hotel

is also close to the famous Naschmarkt, a bustling market where you can find fresh produce, spices and souvenirs. For travellers from the Middle East, autumn is an amazing time to visit Vienna offering a welcome respite from our own scorching temperatures. festivals throughout the year. Or, you could choose to go in wintertime, close to Christmas, when the city is usually a veritable winter wonderland. ✤

PREPARE FOR A CLASSIC AUTUMN

While our weather may still be scorching, the fashion world is readying for the cooler months and Brunello Cucinelli presents a collection that will take you through the season in style.

For women, the Autumn-Winter 2023 collection is based on the clean lines, pure colours and compact fabrics that emerged in the 1990s. Neat and seductive arrangements bring to mind the British manor house with high-quality, handcrafted tactile effects, extremely soft, fleecy surfaces and a countryside feeling. There is an air of academic charm with regimental stripes and sartorial micro patterns, pleated miniskirts, tennis-style V-necks, ties, baseball caps and socks worn with loafers and heels. Demicropped sweaters and boxy jackets alternate with versatile and cosy coats with prestigious details such as knitted inserts, outdoor-style collars or soft shearling linings. Short Spencer jackets and puffy bombers are paired with midi skirts and relaxed trousers, spreading an idea of effortless tailoring that is contemporary and fun to wear.

Winter whites and beiges evoke a sense of luxury and serenity. Blue, with its magnetic character and noble ancestry, adds a sophisticated variation to the base tones.

Matching sets with straight lines and monochrome or tone-ontone effects come to life with compact fabrics, twisted wool yarns and mirrored surfaces. In contrast, bouclé, mottled and brushed effects, quilted fabrics, airy mohair, alpaca yak fibres, super-soft shearlings and fleecy materials evoke the dynamic and natural spirit of the countryside. Traditional patterns and details balance femininity and freshness with subtly flared or pencil skirts, shimmering textures and smooth, flowing surfaces. For the evening, traditional men's tailoring fabrics, enriched with precious embroidery, are glamorously interpreted to create new

tuxedos. The slip dress trend of the nineties is back for the most high-profile occasions. Dresses and skirts in satin, lamé and sparkling three-dimensional embroidery take centre stage. The men’s collection is based on the evolution of timeless classics. Every look is characterised by a key garment that is its focal point, expressing the overall style but, at the same time, defining the harmony of combinations. A tailored cashmere coat, a special hand-knit sweater or a suit made of a precious fabric can constitute this focus of attention, which is then balanced in a contemporary way by overlays, trousers and accessories. Colours take on intense hues, inspired by historic grape blends that have stood the test of time, transcending trends. Shades of red – barbera, maroon and burgundy – are presented in a grayish version to convey, in a palpable way, the passing of time, a long ageing process that enhances the finest and most subtle nuances. The overall harmony is created by precious tones of beige moving from medium camel and sand to light Panama and ecru, accompanied by fascinating shades of noble deep blue and modern light blue. Urban hues of grey complement the backdrop. The suit confirms its role as the cornerstone of the collection while the knitwear selection has been expanded with noble fibres such as virgin wool, silk and alpaca. And elegant styles dedicated to evening and gala events recreate the fusion of glamour and charisma iconic to 1950s’ and 1960s’ Hollywood. ✤

Good Omens Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Need to Know:

Good Omens is a British fantasy comedy series created by Neil Gaiman, based on he and Terry Pratchett's 1990 novel of the same name. The show’s second season picks up following the aftermath of part one and manages to find new ways of being hilarious and entertaining when you least expect it.

Director: Douglas Mackinnon

Cast : Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Nick Offerman, Adria Arjona, Jon Hamm, Miranda Richardson, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, Frances McDormand

Why Is It Worth Watching?

In part one, angels and demons are destined to face each other on the battlefield during the impending Armageddon. Demon, Crowley (David Tennant) and angel, Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), representatives of Heaven and Hell on Earth, are long-time acquaintances and have grown fond of each other’s company as well as to the pleasantness of life on Earth. Looking to maintain their mutually beneficial existence here, they unexpectedly team up to prevent Armageddon and succeed. The second season deals with the events following that conclusion. Now, with the end of times averted, the unlikely duo are separately going about their lives unbothered as intended. That is until supreme archangel, Gabriel (Jon Hamm) suddenly makes an appearance at Aziraphale’s bookshop sans any knowledge or memory of who he is, why he’s there and what he’s supposed to do! This unanticipated guest leads to Aziraphale and Crowley teaming up once again to figure out what happened to Gabriel as they also attempt to hide him from other beings from Heaven and Hell, who are eagerly looking to find him, while they figure out their next move. A top crew of actors dishing out great performances in another wonderfully crafted misadventure makes this show most certainly the good-est of omens indeed!

Need to Know:

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is an animated superhero film that is the second chapter of the Spider-Verse saga. This time, Miles is sent on an epic adventure that will transport him across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off against a villain more powerful than anything they have previously encountered.

Directors: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson

Cast : Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Shea Whigham, Greta Lee, Daniel Kaluuya

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The movie is a follow up to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which showcased stunning animation and remarkable characters and explored complex themes in such an impressive manner that even esteemed industry veterans such as James Gunn claimed it as his favourite comic book movie of all time. Most notably, the film also picked up the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in the same year.

Across the Spider-Verse builds on that masterful foundation and offers more of that same tone, form and style. We see Miles trying his best to balance being a student while also carrying out his friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man duties. He faces up against The Spot, an unpredictable new foe who was initially a scientist working on Kingpin's collider until an accident led to him get mysterious powers that let him open interdimensional portals. Miles reunites with Gwen Stacy, and is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the interesting Spider Society. But when the heroes clash on how to handle the new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. The movie culminates in another undeniable homerun!

ON THE RECORD

RAP

Utopia

The much-awaited album of American rapper and musician, Travis Scott, who has been teasing fans about this release, via Cactus Jack Records, since 2020, Utopia is a rap fest and much more. With a lineup of ace artists from James Blake to Daft Punk’s Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo.

Opener Hyaena sets the mood and has a catchy jingly background beat, against which the listener is introduced to a whirlwind of emotions.

Meltdown , featuring Drake, conjures an intense, trance-like vibe that keeps you hooked.

Bad Bunny’s addictive signature Latin influences reign on K-pop Telekineses , featuring SZA and Future, has softer edges, so to speak, offering aural variety, of which this album has heaps and loads.

Closing track Til Further Notice , featuring 21 Savage and James Blake, explores love and heartbreak in a medley of the former’s rhythmic poetry and the latter’s sweet and mild lyric baritone vocals.

Some might argue that Scott doesn’t stand out when compared to the artists he has tapped for this LP and that his rap isn’t anything to write home about. However, you’ve got to give the Houston-born artist credit for bringing the best on one platform, which makes Utopia a must-listen.

SYNTH-POP; ALTERNATIVE ROCK

American rapper, singer, songwriter and producer, Austin Richard Post has released his fifth and namesake album via Mercury and Republic Records. The lyrics suggest biographical undertones, hence Austin, which add to the feel of this poprock creation.

Opener Don’t Understand begins with a guitar set that endorses Posty’s affinity to the instrument.

Green Thumb, also guitar-centric, summons bittersweet emotions and the abrupt ending fits the emotional context of the track.

Chemical, the first single, was dropped earlier this year and creates an instant chemical reaction in your head. With fastpaced drum beats and stringsy tunes to match Malone’s variegated vocals.

Second single, Mourning has club song-like beats on which Malone explores bottledup emotions in an engaging, raspy tone. Overdrive features a catchy whistling set that’s sure to be on the lips of listeners for a while after they’re done with the album.

Something Real , with its chorus in the background, has an interactive element, which creates a rock concert-like feel.

A personal love album, Austin , in true Malone style, offers musical variety. The artist exhibits a range, dipping into his pop arsenal, endorsing his versatility – a quality he has become known for in his over-a-decade-long musical journey.

HORROR FICTION Holly

A new offering from the master storyteller is always a treat to be anticipated and we can’t wait to get our hands on this one which sees Holly Gibney, who’s first appearance in Mr Mercedes stole the author’s heart, back in fine form. Taking on a case she should really leave well alone, Holly utilises her considerable private detective skills in a bid to find missing Bonnie Dahl, who disappeared close to the home of two elderly professors with a very dark secret in their basement.

SCIENCE FICTION COMEDY Starter Villain

We love this as much for the cover as for the utterly bonkers premise – divorced substitute teacher Charlie living quietly with his cat until his long-lost uncle Jake dies and bequeaths him his supervillain business! Now Jake’s sworn enemies are coming after Charlie and it seems going bad is the way to go. Welcome to a world of unionised dolphins, hyper-intelligent talking spy cats and some proper, modern-day soulless villains. Sounds like a complete romp and we’re looking forward to learning more.
