Summer is almost at an end and students young and older are heading back to their desks (as parents across the country breathe a small sigh of relief). For some youngsters it will be their first time in a classroom while others will be looking forward to greeting friends and getting back into their term-time routine. However your kids (and you) are feeling about going back to school, our main feature this month offers tips and advice on everything from homework to after-school activities. Our other big feature this month is the announcement of the nominees for the much-anticipated Fact Dining Awards – make sure you check them out and get voting online for your favourites. In the Motoring Section, we got behind the wheel of the latest offering from Volvo. And, in the Dining Section, we’ve journeyed from North America to the Med and back to the Middle East at some restaurants that are sure to become firm favourites. We turn the travel spotlight on one of my personal bucket list spots, Montenegro, I’m more keen to visit than ever after reading about it. And elsewhere you’ll find lots of news about things happening around the island as well as our usual round-ups from the fields of technology, entertainment, fashion and grooming. I hope you enjoy this cool-down issue.

Under the patronage of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, Bahrain Cinema Club will host the second edition of Bahrain Film Festival from October 1 to 5. This year, the festival will be held under the slogan ‘Cinema for You’. In 2017, the club organised a local contest, Bahrain Club Film Competition, which witnessed the participation of 15 short films. The second edition of this competition was held in 2018 and saw 25 short films taking part. In 2019, the club decided to take this annual competition to the next level – from local to pan Arab –and conduct it in 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic had different plans. Nevertheless, Bahrain Film Festival was conducted in 2021 where awards were distributed to the winners offline and the films were screened in October. This year, Bahrain Film Festival is ready to have a full-scale physical event, which will host celebrities from the Middle East and see participants from 28 Arab countries. So far, 300 short films have already entered under three categories: short movie, short documentary and short animation. The submissions will be reviewed by a panel of experts who will shortlist a few films to showcase at the festival. Awards will be presented in these categories, as well as for one best movie by students and a special jury award. The shortlisted entries will be screened at a venue in Manama over five days and the films will be primarily in Arabic but with English subtitles.

The festival aims to celebrate young Bahraini and Arab cinematic talent and create a supportive environment to launch new talent in the field. Additionally, it seeks to contribute to the revival and advancement of the Bahraini cinematic movement to achieve a place in the cinematic movement of Arab Gulf countries in particular and Arab cinema in general. ✤ GO: VISIT BAHRAINFILMFESTIVAL.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION.

fact magazine 23 BACK TO SCHOOL •

here’s an old saying that your school days are the best days of your life. With pretty much all schools going back to in-person teaching, starting or returning to school for the new educational year is likely to bring a mixed bag of emotions. While many youngsters will be raring to go, excited for what the new term will bring, there may also be anxieties, hidden or obvious. Whether your youngster is gung-ho or feeling just that little bit nervous about the whole thing, we’ve got a range of strategies to help.

THE BEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES

We’ve also checked out some of the best apps to help students as they head back to the classroom and sought out a range of after-school activities, to help you make the best of the free time your kids still have.

Routine, Routine, Routine Psychologists unanimously agree that routine is the number one factor in getting kids, both young and older, ready for a smooth return to (or first time in) the classroom. And this is not just about establishing a term-time bedtime and sticking to it. You also need morning and after-school routines – this is crucial both to give kids a feeling of security and consistency but also for parents’ sanity.

T

Whichever routine you decide to establish, be prepared to stick to your guns. After the long summer holidays, youngsters may have gotten into the habit on going to bed late and getting up equally late as well as spending a lot of time playing either online or with favourite toys or friends. You can incorporate some of this behaviour into the new routine with promises of additional play/ sleep time at weekends but it’s important that, during the week, school-age kids are getting enough sleep.

You may wish to incorporate small jobs that youngsters can do themselves such as making sure, when they arrive home, that their school bags are packed for the next day and their uniforms are properly put away or dropped into the laundry basket.

Lush Lunches

Homework Helper

Making the start of a new term fun can go a long way to easing any anxieties kids big and small may be feeling. Try shopping for stylish stationery and great accessories. For little ones, particularly, this will help them to get excited about going back to the classroom and, for this age group, participation and a feeling of choice are key. But, make sure their more outlandish choices are fit for the job they need to do. You could also have a fun session with them personalising their bags and belongings to make sure they always come home at the end of the day. For older kids, setting a budget and giving them the independence to shop for themselves might be just what’s needed.

Now’s the time to get in the homework habit. For age groups that will have regular out-of-school work to do, set a time period, either directly when they arrive home or – if that’s precious playtime –perhaps after supper, for them to sit down and hit the books (or, these days, screens) to ensure their homework is done on time. This may mean making time for mum or dad to be available to help, particularly for little ones, and this can be a great opportunity to talk about their day. For days when there is no homework, this period can be used for reading or another enjoyable but mildly educational activity – if they’re used to taking this time out, it won’t seem like a chore. If, as a parent, you feel you’re not up to the task of helping with homework – this may be particularly evident in the case of older children – now’s the time to speak to your children’s teachers and perhaps seek out a tutor if you feel there’s an area where extra help is needed.

This may seem obvious but, when parents are often rushing to fit in after-school activities, homework and making sure the kids are prepped for the next day’s lessons, conversation can easily take a back seat. But, though communication is hugely important all year round, at the start of a new school year or term it takes on added significance. It’s a good habit, for all ages, to take a few minutes, perhaps before bed, to just check-in, talk about your kid’s day and gently ask if there’s anything bothering them. If all’s hunky dory, then congratulations, for now. But, if issues do develop, having this practice established will, hopefully, make it easier to spot problems early and take appropriate action.

Check out puckarabia.com for cheesy ideas, modernhoney.com for some great looking, healthy options, or aheadofthyme.com for gourmet goodies.

fact magazine24 • BACK TO SCHOOL Make It Fun

It's Good To Talk

Another great way to get youngsters excited about going back to school at the same time as helping build your own routine is to get them involved in choosing and preparing their own lunches and snacks to take with them. Of course, you want them to be eating a nutritionally balanced selection of foods but there’s certainly no harm in catering to their particular whims and making the contents of their lunchbox look appealing will go a long way to ensuring they actually eat the things you pack.

The positive effects of meditation are well-known. As a child, life can be quite stressful especially with school and other challenges that come with it. Children’s Meditations offers timed meditation modules for children of different age groups. There is a range of components that help children fall asleep, find their inner calm, be mindful and more. In addition to the free options, there are those you can purchase in-app as well.

If kids (or parents) find themselves taking too many breaks or, even, perhaps don’t know when to take a breather, Clockwork Tomato is the answer. It helps users stay productive based on the Pomodoro Technique, a time management system where you divide your workday into 25-minute chunks separated by five-minute breaks. However, you can set timers (and sounds) to fit the type of work being done. You can also keep a log of achieved and unfinished intervals. Further, you can personalise the app for days and times so it knows when to start keeping track. Drive Thru Getting back to a routine after a holiday can be tough. Not to mention the stress that classes and exams bring. Drive Thru helps recognise and understand emotions by asking users how they’re feeling and what is making them feel that way (triggers); there are options you can select, making it that much easier. Further, you can practise breathing exercises and journalling. There’s also a library of helpful reading and listening material, as well as writing exercises including modules specially made for students. Qualified therapists offer courses that you can take, depending on the problem you’re facing. While a lot of the material is free, there are components available to purchase in-app.

Volvo’s all-new XC90 B6 Hybrid elevates the driving experience with an integrated electrified powertrain. VOLVO EMBRACE THE FUTURE • ISLAND RIDES

As expected from a Volvo vehicle, the 2022 XC90 comes packed with safety features and advanced driver assistance

The subtle Scandinavian styling of the interior creates a calm and balanced environment. Headlining, roof pillars and sun visors are all finished in exclusive nubuck textile and this, combined with metal mesh aluminium décor creates a truly luxurious environment. The leather-free, hand-stitched, three-spoke steering wheel houses several control functions, and features a stylish satin silk trim with colour-coordinated stitching. A Swedish crystal gear lever adds to the deluxe feel of the cabin, along with a harmonious blend of various premium materials. Being an adjustable, three-row, sevenseater SUV, our XC90 provided sufficient head, shoulder, knee and leg room for all occupants, with the large panoramic sunroof adding to the light and airy feel of the cabin. The rear seat backrests and head restraints have been designed for easy folding, allowing for up to 1,856 litres of storage capacity.

Volvo has committed itself to the path of electrification by slowly phasing out internal combustion engines. The B6 is a mild hybrid that uses an advanced kinetic energy recovery braking system, coupled with an internal combustion engine to create a new integrated electrified powertrain. This newly-developed powertrain ensures that drivers save up to 15% on fuel, whilst substantially reducing CO2 emissions. The XC90 B6 utilises both, a turbocharger and supercharger that produces 220kW and 420Nm of torque. This all-wheel-drive model is combined with an eight-speed, drive-by-wire Geartronic transmission. This combination allows for the B6 to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds, and to produce an electronically capped top speed of 180km/h. Not bad for a vehicle weighing in at around two tonnes. With competent off-road capabilities, a great braking system, decent suspension and plenty of grip on the corners, we found the XC90 B6 to offer a proficient and versatile driving experience.

Interior Entering the XC90, we were greeted by Volvo’s ergonomic Comfort seats that offer almost endless adjustment options.

fact magazine36 V olvo has developed a global reputation for being one of the safest and most reliable automobile brands on the planet. This is, in part, due to their unwavering dedication to constantly improving their vehicles with each and every new offering. This Swedish motor vehicle manufacturer has won more awards for safety and performance than most other car brands could ever dream of. In fact, the Volvo XC90 is the most awarded luxury SUV of the century. This month, thanks to Volvo Bahrain, the FACT magazine team had the opportunity to thoroughly inspect and test drive the 2022 Volvo XC90 B6 —a model that once again showcases the brand’s unyielding commitment to the continuous advancement of the driving experience. Exterior

The XC90 is Volvo’s top-of-the-line, flagship motor vehicle and we were fortunate enough to experience an XC90 boasting the top-of-the-range ‘Ultimate’ trim. The SUV has held its shape over the years, however, the aggressive yet luxurious nature of the exterior design has been improved with subtle upgrades. The iconic front grille is finished in matte silver, complete with chrome bar insert, chrome frame and the renowned Volvo badge. The distinctive ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights further add to the car’s bold demeanour. The shapely body of the XC90 is easy on the eye, comprising of clean lines that flow effortlessly from bonnet to boot. At the flanks, door mirror covers are colour coordinated, as are the door handles - featuring LED lighting. The side windows are surrounded by a bright aluminium trim that accentuates the shiny integrated roof rails. Twenty-inch, 10-spoke, black diamond cut wheels are fitted as standard and greatly contribute to the XC90’s solid stance. The rear exhibits an integrated spoiler, signature taillights and chrome surround exhaust tips.

The storage compartment itself has a flat floor making the loading and unloading of goods an easy chore. There are multiple options for opening and closing the tailgate, including via sensors under the rear bumper.

We found one of the most impressive aspects of the 2022 Volvo XC90 to be its modern infotainment system. The XC90 houses the Volvo connectivity and infotainment system called Sensus, that is operated through a large, highly-responsive touchscreen interface. This setup combines car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment applications, including Spotify and Pandora. It’s also compatible with both, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. We found this user-friendly system to allow for fast and easy access to a host of functions and features. Google Assistant voice control is now accessed through the mere touch of a button located on the steering wheel. This novel feature fulfils your every command and is activated by the phrase “Hey Google”.

Emanuel Valim, Chef de Cuisine, Wyndham Garden Manama, on his love for the flavours of his Brazilian homeland.

fact magazine 53 VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

The magic of how those ingredients were turned into very delicious food always fascinated me. The pictures of chefs on the covers of the recipe books inspired me. I really wanted to be a chef, I really wanted to be a man who enjoyed his work cooking tasty food and giving others the pleasure of enjoying great food. You are currently head chef at the hotel’s Brazilian steakhouse, Via Brasil, and you say you were ‘Born and raised on the South American cowboy culture’ – what does this mean to you in terms of food?

In terms of food, when I say ‘I’m born and raised on the South American cowboy culture’, it means a lot. Where I come from, the way that we celebrate, meet with friends and receive visitors, is always by doing a churrasco (Brazilian barbecue), with happy music and good food. Also, I have memories of my travels to the countryside and the neighbouring countries, like Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, which bring me back to the ‘gaúcho’ lifestyle. Wake up early to milk the cow for the full table breakfast, work in the fields, ride a horse, prepare the things to gather after work to make churrasco, and many other things. This is reflected in my cooking style. For me, making churrasco is a happy time. When diners visit Via Brasil, how do you communicate your Gaucho lifestyle to them through the menu and decor?

When diners come to Via Brasil, they can feel in the atmosphere the gaúcho culture; on the wall you find a bull’s head, the smell of churrasco is in the air, the buffet features recipes that have been passed down through generations and the meats are cooked exactly in churrasco style. The churrasco technique is credited to the gaúchos of the cattle ranching lands of the Rio Grande do Sul in the 1800s. After long days of herding cattle, they would gather their communities

What is your signature dish? What makes this dish popular? My signature dish for sure is the Picanha cut [steak], grilled on a charcoal fire, using a technique that has been passed down through generations in my family. Picanha also is the most popular dish in the Brazilian steakhouse, because it is a very special cut, tender and flavourful. ✤ How did you first become interested in a life in the kitchen? Did you know from an early age that this was what you wanted to do? My passion for the life in the kitchen started at a very early age. When I was young, I had a stool that I liked to place beside the stove, in the kitchen, to watch my mother cooking.

to enjoy a large meal of barbecued meats which they called churrasco. And at Via Brasil we do the same, we gather to enjoy churrasco.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

There are two menus, one for lunch and another for dinner. We were served a tasting selection of signature dishes from each. We began with Bagatelle salad – mixed leaves tossed at the table in a large wooden bowl which, to be honest, I would usually avoid. However, the simple dressing of vinaigrette with Dijon mustard, made it extremely palatable and I wolfed it down. Next came Tomato and Burrata salad. Small, sweet tomatoes, creamy, oozy burrata with a savoury lemon basil dressing that pulled the flavours together and was the perfect foil to the sweetness of the glistening red fruits.

Interiors are blue, white and gold – offering a refined but casual feel.

Plush turquoise velvet seating, in sofas and chairs, is very comfortable – which is just as well since you’ll want to stay all night long. The floors are wooden and ambient lighting does dual duty to provide an intimate dining atmosphere early in the evening and then changes shade and intensity as the restaurant transforms into the ultimate party spot at 11pm with the staff marking the transition with a mini show that is totally bonkers but a whole lot of fun – think great music and dancing on the tables.

fact magazine56 • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT W ith its French-New York roots, Bagatelle aims to bring a feel of the Riviera to all its venues. The menu, designed by Chef Rocco Seminara, is made for sharing and is the same worldwide, with a guarantee of the same quality wherever you try the famous dishes.

While dining, table service is hugely important in creating a show, from the pouring of dressings and sauces to the deboning of the whole sea bass or carving of the salt-crusted chicken right at the table. Each staff member has to be able to pull off these tricks of the trade, at speed.

Barbajuan fried ravioli stuffed with pumpkin, parmesan, ricotta and hazelnuts was really surprising and tasty. The unexpected texture was satisfyingly crunchy and the quite strong flavours merged well. For me, one of several stand-out dishes was Parmigian D’augergines crème de parmesan – it’s like a hug in a bowl. Rolled slices of eggplant are stuffed with parmesan mixed with tomato sauce, mozzarella and herbs and served in parmesan cream. Cheesy, perfectly rendered and overall delicious.

Moving on to raw fish, hand-diced tuna tartare came with the perfect accompaniment of lightly roasted guacamole and radish shavings. Aji Amarillo pepper and a dusting of citrus powder including orange gave a delightfully sweet piquancy to the tender tuna. Seafood ceviche with sea bream, lemon, lime, coconut milk and passion fruit made for another one of those delightful palatepleasing surprises. If you’re going to try either of these dishes, make sure you are really paying attention, the flavour combinations are interesting, unexpected but remarkably successful. A simple tomato and pasta dish, Linguine Aux Tomates Cerises, Stracciatella Au Basilic featured Italian-produced pasta baked in Puglian tomato sauce made with onions, olive oil, garlic and fresh herbs, topped with Stracciatella, basil and olive oil. The flavours of the sauce with the light, sweet cheesiness of the Stracciatella were absolutely perfect and I had to stop myself going back for seconds. Next up came Lobster Fettucine – pasta bound in the juice of the lobster with butter, Espelette chilli and lime zest. The flesh was super sweet and there was no battle to get it out of the shell –

The semihard Castelmagno Italian cheese fills Plin pasta from the Piedmont region, which floats in a sauce made with melanosporum truffle served with grated seasonal truffle. Simple, yet totally indulgent, I honestly believe our party could all have gone home happy at this stage. But, of course, there was more to come. A whole sea bass cooked in a jus of tomato, lemon, white grape, butter and lemon leaves was deboned in a show at the table. Served with caramelised red onion and chopped lemon, orange, grapefruit and jewel bright pomegranate, the fish was buttery and smooth in texture with a lightly piquant flavour perfectly complemented by the accompanying aromatics and house special mashed potato with its secret ingredient of brown butter. Next came a bit of a mouthful, Poulet Entier Fermier à L’estragon, En Croute de Sel aux Aromates – a whole chicken in a salt crust, the crust made all the more impressive with the addition of flour to fully encase the bird. This method of cooking, aside from adding visual interest, aims to ensure that the flesh remains moist and flavourful and it did not disappoint. Again, the crust is removed and the chicken carved at the tableside which makes for a great show and demonstrates the training of the staff. No visit to Bagatelle would be complete without trying the signature dish – Pizza La Truffe de Saison – seasonal truffle pizza with extra black truffle. The dough is really something else and unlike any I have tasted before. Made with organically-farmed mixed flour that includes sesame, rye, oats, barley and more, it is refrigerated for 48 to 72 hours then brought back to room temperature and hand spread with durum wheat semolina before baking. The result is a really interesting flavour and texture combination that almost dares the taste buds to identify the different components. Then there’s the topping – I did honestly say “this is actually not a pizza” since, aside from its shape, it bears little resemblance to the pies we are used to. The cheese is fior di latte – made with the highest quality cow’s milk and cooked to a perfect chewy consistency. It’s topped with daubs of foam made from mascarpone truffle bechamel and grated truffle slices. This is probably the most luxurious pizza I have ever eaten – and I’ve eaten a lot – but it, once again, fits perfectly with Bagatelle’s sharing concept. It’s so rich that you wouldn’t want more than one slice, but that slice will forever be the one other pizzas must live up to. Stuffed to the gills, we took a little time out to appreciate the surroundings and some great mocktails before tucking into the desserts. My idea of heaven was the Tropezienne Al La Vanille – a delicately light brioche pastry filled with sweetened cream. Soft, yielding and almost like eating sweet, fluffy air, I had to stop myself from devouring the whole thing so I would have room to at least try the international-award-winning chocolate pizza. The dough is the same as its savoury counterpart, but even thinner and with a crispiness to the base, and the topping is every sin you could imagine – a milk chocolate disc, hazelnut cream, dark chocolate cream, light vanilla cream, hazelnut praline, roasted hazelnuts and more. Oh my gosh! That is all. Bagatelle is open daily for lunch from 12:30pm to 3:30pm and for dinner from 7pm to 2am. A friday brunch will be launched soon. ✤ GO: CALL 1667 7770 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A RESERVATION.

FABULOUS MEDITERRANEANLEBANESEFEAST

Layal Al-Mahmoud headed to new eatery, Em Sherif, for Mediterranean cuisine with a taste of her Lebanese homeland.

often avoid going out to crowded destinations during the weekend. However, this recently opened spot sparked an exception as one of the interesting new additions to the culinary scene on the island. Fasten your seatbelts and ride along…

fact magazine 59

Location: the waterfront shopping centre The Avenues-Bahrain.

Destination: Em Sherif Sea Café is a seafood concept with a beef bar corner created by acclaimed restaurateur Mireille Hayek, AKA Em Sherif, as an homage to Lebanon’s Mediterranean face. Past the welcoming counter, you enter an indoor space with marine-inspired design. A grandeur imposed by the high ceiling, the huge cylinder poles dressed in gigantic ropes, the cosmic chandeliers and, most significantly, the charming sea mural in blue. The water is your companion outdoors (when the weather is right). The furniture is quite simple yet comfortable. You absolutely can sit on those chairs for hours, thank God! The one detail that captured my heart would be the bag stand that they offer the ladies. The menu is vast featuring a variety of fresh seafood dishes with a rainbow of other options for any meat lover. And, with the diversity of Lebanese cuisine, vegetarian and vegan foodies will not be disappointed. With the Catch Of The Day display counter, guests can select their favourites from a range of fish and shellfish, to be expertly prepared to their liking.

From the innovative creations, we encourage you to try the Fish Kibbeh, a bed of kibbeh dough topped with pieces of grilled fish,

To start from the beginning with a few cold mezzeh dishes, such as shrimp or regular mutabel, hummus, a refreshing seafood cabbage salad and fattoush, is always a must!

fact magazine60 nibbles of orange for that zesty freshness and a glorious tahini sauce. It was a winner! Mixing the mains with hot mezzeh is always a good idea. The mixed grill had to be put to the test and it passed with an A. But the fish shawarma sandwich was the discovery that ticked all the boxes, it is glorious! It reminded me of the famous Samki Harrah a speciality of El-Minaa in Tripoli… OMG! The butterflied seabass was a super delicious, figure-friendly pleasure, the fish was perfectly prepared and the assembly of green on top with semi-sundried cherry tomatoes added a layer of bright freshness. Deep fried calamari? Why not! And Batata Harrah, or spicy potatoes, are an absolute must, perfectly crispy and delectable. They’re not too spicy but you can always ask your host to spare the green chilli slices. Of course, you can settle for water or take a soft drink but we decided to try different kinds of mocktails. The combination of jasmine tea, pineapple and soda was bitter sweet, great for tea fans. The Passion Fruit Mojito was sour perfect. When the food is good, we often sacrifice the sweet ending. But why would you do that? Great food probably means great sweet creations as well! Yes, I thought of that all by myself hehehe… go ahead and order Um Ali if you are a fan. Or go for the Ashta ice cream Usmaliyeh because you can. You won’t regret it. So, my thoughts on Em Sherif? Mouth-watering, high quality Mediterranean food prepared to perfection and presented to please all the senses with five-star service… I am in! Life is short my friend and if the recent pandemic taught us one thing, it is that we must enjoy every moment with the company of those we care about, be it family or friends. If you haven’t been to Em Sherif Sea Café, make the trip and live your own food discovery. You can thank me later! ✤ GO: CALL 7710 0777 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A RESERVATION.

fact magazine 63

The space has been transformed into a modern setting, featuring neon signs, metallic accents and mesh detail. A huge mesh wall hanging displays the names of all the outlets –eight and counting – expansion plans are underway. We also spot black and white photos of the other branches, all a testament to the legacy of this family-friendly, casual-dining restaurant. New amenities include a sky patio, which is the outdoor area on the top floor, outdoor seating on the ground level, large-screen TVs showing various sports, a game zone, a family area and a topping bar. The outdoor section, you’d think, is more suited for cooler weather. However, we learn that guests are already enjoying the al fresco ambience despite the heat! It’s worth mentioning that even after the renovation, the essence of Fudds, as it’s affectionately known – great food and fun vibes – remains untouched; lively chefs in action behind the grill counter, catchy music playing in the background, friendly servers ready to host… let the Fudd-venture begin! We start off with the Appetizer Platter, an ideal dish to share. It features a variety of moreish delights: chilli cheese fries, mozzarella sticks, buffalo chicken wings, pizzaiola quesadillas and onion rings served with carrot and celery sticks and creamy ranch and honey mustard. I particularly enjoy the quesadilla, stuffed with just the right amount of warm cheese and offering a nice crunch from the pizzaiola flavoured vegetables. It has a pizza sauce-like taste, tangy and herby. We also try the Chicken Tenders, juicy chicken fingers encased in an earth-shattering

any may not know that Fuddruckers’ Sanad branch was established in 1995 and was their first on the island. Two months ago, they reopened on July 6 after a complete renovation.

The Half Pound Sliders are next on the chopping block. There are three per serving. The beef patty is succulent, lathered in cheese – sharp cheddar and stringy mozzarella – as well as a silken cheese sauce. Peppery arugula leaves add freshness to the burger. Sweet and smoky grilled onions and piquant pickle slices complement their companions. Orchestrating this scrummy symphony is a homemade Fudds’ sauce, which brings it all together and lends the burger a certain je ne sais quoi. We wash all of this down with regular iced tea, blue soda and fresh orange juice and still have room for dessert. The Brownie Blast is a fudgy square of happiness crowned with a sphere of white vanilla ice cream, all drizzled in a heavenly chocolate sauce. Just the sweet note we want to end on but only until we’re back for more. Fudds has an application too, so you can get a feel for what’s on offer. However, we strongly recommend trying the renovated space as well! ✤ GO: CALL 1762 0999 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A RESERVATION.

fact magazine64 crunchy coating. You can add them to your Appetizer Platter upon request. Next, come the Family Nachos, a larger version of Fudds Nachos. Golden fried 2D corn pyramids topped with a magical medley of mashed black beans and sour cream, as well as spring onions, olives and creamy guacamole, which add freshness, and jalapenos and homemade beef chilli, which create a bit of heat. Finally, they’re drizzled with gooey Fudds’ cheese sauce – everything’s better with cheese! The contrast of textures and temperatures in this dish tantalises our taste buds. Balancing these fried favourites is the refreshing Buffalo Chicken Salad. Chunks of chicken breast tossed in Fudds’ signature hot buffalo sauce, which is tangy with a bit of a kick. It’s served on a bed of crunchy mixed lettuce, cheese blends and zingy pico de gallo, and drizzled with a cool ranch dressing. It comes with a Texas toast and is the perfect transition to our hearty mains, the first of which is the limited-edition Wild Mushroom Double Smash Burger. It will be available all of this month. Loaded with a double-decker, certified Angus beef patty that’s grilled to perfection, smothered in a garlic parmesan sauce and topped with an exotic array of wild Shiitake and Portobello mushrooms – these wild ones are meaty, infused with flavours from the juicy burger. The sauce, creamy, slightly sharp from the garlic and savoury from the parmesan, complements the other ingredients. The lettuce and tomatoes add freshness and further crunch and the grilled onions have a certain sweetness, elevating the overall experience. All the burgers are served with either a side of French fries or Fudds Fries – wedges. We recommend dipping them in the jalapeno cheese sauce from Fudds’ ‘legendary’ Build Your Own Topping Bar. All the items on there are freshly prepared daily. I’m delighted to discover that the potato salad is back! Fudds makes all of its food in-house; the protein is butchered in-house, never frozen and the sesame-topped buns are freshly baked every day.

BREAKFASTBRILLIANTBITES

Looking for a quiet getaway breakfast place for a simple yet delicious meal? Look no further. This month, Amal Sarhan headed to Lemon on the Budaiya Highway, and boy oh boy are you guys going to love this!

fact magazine 67 DINING DELIGHT •

C oming into the block where Lemon is, I could feel that lazy Sunday feeling already coming on. The restaurant itself is both elegant and relaxed and I could imagine anyone being comfortable there, be it a young crowd, older visitors or a large family gathering. As we sat down on the soft sofas, we instantly felt at home. The first thing we were served was tall glasses of warm karak tea, just cool enough to drink and hot enough to feel amazing. I could instantly taste that lovely cardamom and a hint of saffron. Not too milky and smooth on the tongue, it provided us with the gentle calm we needed to begin our meal. We started off with Zaatar and Halloumi Manaeesh, freshly baked, warm, and topped with cherry tomatoes, black sesame seeds and fresh whole basil leaves. After taking a minute or two to decide which I wanted to try first, I went ahead with the halloumi. Upon taking a bite, the pungent flavour of the cheese instantly invaded my mouth, enveloped by the soft texture of the bread and injected with the sweetness of the cooked tomatoes. Then came the Zaatar Manaeesh. Now, when I heard I was going to get Zaatar Manaeesh, I was slightly worried there would be a lack of zaatar, as is often the case. But to my delight, the bread was soft and crispy and laden with a more than generous helping of the perfectly blended spices and black sesame seeds. Next came the Breakfast Platter, with a selection of hummus, labneh, eggs and potato, mixed beans, ful mudammas and chicken liver, as well as some hot fresh bread.

DINING DELIGHT

The labneh was tantalisingly good. The fresh sour taste was well balanced out with toppings of cucumber, radish and a drizzle of zaatar, as well as sumac, all of which complemented each other well. I took a bite of the eggs and potato and discovered a perfect combination of textures, the pleasant lightness of the scrambled eggs, firm and not too runny, and the slight crunch of the wellfried potatoes was really pleasing and satisfying Tucking into the mixed beans, I was instantly in awe. Harbouring a rich savoury taste and a hint of lemon, I was left wanting more, not to mention the addition of fresh mint leaves and pomegranate, adding a peppery and sweet tinge. Hands-down my favourite of all six servings. The Ful Mudammas was next. This orangeybrown dish topped with a heavy drizzle of tahini and a sprinkle of sumac was simply to die for. It packed in so much flavour with a rich tangy tomato sauce and the chewiness of the lentils making it a good and filling starter.

The avocado toast came with poached eggs and chopped fresh coriander, topped with sumac and radish. Mixed grain seeded bread gave a nice, crunchy base and a topping of black sesame seeds gave the whole mouthful a subtle nutty flavour atop the creamy avocado. A note for future visits though, I will ask for my eggs slightly more firmly cooked for this dish. We moved on to Eggs Benedict with creamy Hollandaise sauce. This time the eggs were perfectly poached for my taste and there was a great contrast with the beef bacon cutting through the heaviness of the sauce. Sunflower toast topped with paprika spice and freshly chopped coriander gave this dish a satisfyingly chewy bite and I loved the presentation with three small, baked cherry tomatoes served on the side. Saving the best for last, I finally dug into the tantalising pancakes. Topped with a daub of toffee caramel, slices of banana and strawberry, a twig of fresh mint and a generous helping of maple syrup, it was hard not to want it all to myself! The pancakes were not too sweet, allowing the fruit and caramel to really shine. A classic and hearty breakfast item. Crispy edges, soft texture, easy to chew and not too heavy or sweet. This alone would make the perfect breakfast. Lemon serves a range of dishes throughout the day and its friendly, welcoming atmosphere makes it a favourite among expats and locals alike. For breakfast, the sheer range of items on the menu means there is something to suit every taste and I will definitely be going back for more. ✤ GO: CALL 1360 6880 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A RESERVATION.

Turkish Eggs were then laid on the table and I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Perfectly poached eggs laid on a blanket of creamy labneh and garnished with freshly chopped coriander, sumac, pomegranate seeds and a special Turkish spicy sauce, served with freshly cut baguette slices buttered with garlic and coriander. The cheesy tang of the labneh worked really well with the runny egg yolks and the crunchy bread was perfect for mopping up this melting combination adding that elusive hint of garlic.

Overlookingup!Bahrain's sparkling waters and only about 4km from Bahrain National Museum, Hilton Bahrain finally opened up its doors in Juffair offering 348 beautifully designed guest rooms, six onsite restaurants and a well-rounded urban experience that we could not get enough of. I got a little too excited about this particular staycation though as I packed my bag – I made sure to include some food and treats for my best friend, since he was coming along! As the aggressively excited wagging of the tail began, me and my furry friend, Blackberry, jumped in the car and headed out on our latest adventure. As we reached the lobby of the Hilton Hotel, the ever-sokind concierge team helped with our luggage and welcomed me inside. Not even moments later, the Director of Food & Beverage was already kneeling on the ground welcoming Blackberry into the hotel with cuddles. He was loving the attention so far. The check-in process was extremely smooth – I had to answer some questions about my four-legged friend (his weight and age) and received a well-put-together letter with useful insights for our stay! These included where we could take a walk, pet grooming facilities, pet-sitting services, inroom pet massages as well as pet in-room dining. Honestly, at this point, I was already beyond elated with all the interactions Berry and I were getting before we had even entered our room. The lovely team at the Hilton had put us up on one of their highest floors in a 775sq/ft King Deluxe Studio with phenomenal views of the sea from every corner. Equipped with a 55-inch smart TV (that rotates so you can comfortably watch from the bed, or even from the plush sofa bed in the living area), a full kitchenette, a dining table, a designated wardrobe area and a stunningly long balcony to enjoy the views from, I put our things down and soaked in the luxury. There's something quite refreshing about feeling at home, even when you're not at home. Berry ran around the room in circles as he got acquainted with the new location – luckily the hotel had prepared for him his very own special bed with a toy and set up feeding bowls for him to use! We both made ourselves at home very quickly, got comfy and ready to enjoy the sunset from our 27th-floor view. Having taken the day off to spend some quality time with my best friend, we both sat down to explore the hotel's 24-hour in-room dining menu for a late afternoon treat – I enjoyed some deliciously crispy fish fingers whilst he munched away on his dry food.

Opening the balcony door to step out and overlook skyscrapers and the beautiful ocean of blue, I sighed with contentment as I watched the day turn into dusk and the city lights start to light up the skies. I also thoroughly enjoyed sleeping in that magnificent king-sized bed and lucky enough for my furry friend, he even found himself up there with me as we snoozed several alarms before finally waking up the next morning. I opened the blinds to let in some sunlight through the large windows, got in a few stretches and quickly got dressed to catch the breakfast buffet on the sixth floor. Entering the all-day dining restaurant, Origin Kitchen & Culture, you could just feel (and definitely smell) the good energy and high vibrations of the morning. With breakfast options laid out strategically all around the venue, I picked the corner table with some of the best scenic views and set out on a mission. From a live egg station to hot and cold foods, to fruits and desserts and even a gluten-free stand, I made sure that I sincerely indulged for the most important meal of the day. They also had tons of coffee machines available – I like mine cold during the summer, so they were sweet enough to put in the extra work and make sure that was delivered to me! After breakfast, I took a quick stroll to explore the rest of the hotel. Right outside there’s a fantastic pool equipped with a bar that serves refreshments, closely followed by Cocoluna Lounge that was radiating all the chill vibes,

AN ADVENTURE ON THE ADRIATIC A coastal paradise with rich historic and cultural undertones, Montenegro is a definitely a country to add to your travel bucket list.

TRAVEL •

Montenegro is a Balkan country with rugged mountains, mediaeval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline. A popular tourist destination, it has much to offer from historical sites and monuments to natural attractions, vibrant nightlife and more. This time of the year, Montenegro has hot days and balmy evenings. Expect some rainfall too. In this article, we will explore three coastal cities steeped in culture. BUDVA Budva Riviera has many beaches with restaurants and all the basic amenities such as washrooms and showers. The water is warm enough to swim at this time, which makes it the perfect city to enjoy some beach time. Mogren Beach is flanked by verdant hills and features golden sands and clear blue waters. There are designated spots to dive from. Further, you can swim, snorkel or simply relax with a summer cooler and enjoy the view. Located about 3km from Budva is Jaz Beach. There’s a parking area in case you decide to drive down. The shore is pebbly but you can rent recliners and sunbathe. You can also enjoy water sports such as waterskiing, surfing and kayaking by renting out the equipment at the beach. Divided from the bustling town of Budva by a beautiful peninsula, Bečići Beach also offers watersports, as well as land activities such as volleyball. Old Town Beach is a small, charming stretch of sand right outside the Budva town walls. Steeped in history, the old town itself is home to many monuments and sites from the Middle Ages. The ancient walls of the city still stand and you can explore the labyrinth of lanes and inroads, which connect town squares, on foot. Dotted with restaurants and cafes, serving traditional Montenegrin cuisine – these can be the perfect pitstop for your expedition. The citadel is a major attraction. Also known as Fortress of St. Mary, it now houses a library and restaurant. The views from the rooftop are said to be mesmerising. There are religious monuments too, such as the Church of St. John. According to oral tradition, it was built in the seventh century and is one of the oldest in the coastal region. Exhibiting a Gothic style, it has a bell tower which adds to its charm. Entry is free and once you’re inside, you will see the popular Madonna of Budva icon, as well as other religious icons and paintings. The Church of the Holy Trinity has unique frescoes. Many summer festivals are held in Budva right up to September, featuring culturally diverse poetry, songs and dances. A testament to its many cultural influences throughout history. The Old Town of Budva is also known for its energetic nightlife and there are many bars and pubs that you can visit to try the popular Montenegrin fruit spirits.

ULCINJ Located about a 90-minute drive from Budva, Ulcinj has some nice beaches too. Velika Plaža or Great Beach is

fact magazine92 • TRAVEL popular, combining warm, sandy shores and beautiful views of the Adriatic coast. The longest in Montenegro and one of the longest in Europe, it stretches for over 10km and offers ideal conditions for kite surfing. Mala Plaža, also known as City Beach, is popular too but can get quite crowded. Yet another well-known beach is Ženska Plaža or Ladies’ Beach. As the name suggests, it's exclusively for women. Naturally positioned in an alcove, it offers privacy and even has a guard at the entrance. This spot is known for its sulphurrich springs, which are located in the shallow waters and said to have curative properties for infertility in women. You could also visit Valdanos Beach, which is located about a 15-minute drive from Ulcinj. It’s rocky with sea urchins and most known for the olive grove that flanks the shores. This expanse of about 80,000 olive trees belongs to local families. Some of the trees are said to be centuries old. There are family run restaurants that sell bottles of premium quality olive oil that you could take home as a souvenir. Also check out the oldest lighthouse in Montenegro located on Cape Mendra, which is close by and offers beautiful views.

Montenegro is known for its nature reserves and biodiversity. Ulcinj Salina, which is about 5km from the city centre, is the largest salt pan in the Adriatic and a bird habitat. Home to more than 200 species some of which are migratory. This time of the year right up to November is bird-watching season, the flamingos that have become a symbol of the area are very popular. In addition to being a beach town and nature haven, Ulcinj is also a historical hub. Take a walk through the picturesque, narrow streets of the Old Town. A major attraction here is the fortress, which has been restored many times over the centuries. The architecture of this ancient structure is note-worthy; make sure to visit the Balšić Tower, which offers breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding town, bulwarks coming out of the sea and ancient edifices restored as luxury accommodations for visitors. Other major attractions include religious monuments such as the church-mosque or Imperial Mosque or Church of St. Maria; a former church and mosque, it now hosts the town museum. There are many restaurants here that you can visit to try the local cuisine. Being a coastal town, seafood is common.

Buzara is a stew-like dish made with prawn, clams or squid with garlicky undertones. Meat and poultry are widely eaten too. Try the Brav u Mlijeku, meat braised in milk with root vegetables. Cevapi, grilled meat sausage or patties,

Escape to Our Lady of the Rocks, a small man-made island created from a bulwark of rocks and sunken old and seized ships loaded with rocks. You can easily get here by boat from Perast, which is about a 20-minute drive from Kotor. The Church of Our Lady of the Rocks is the largest structure on the islet. It houses a collection of paintings and a tapestry embroidered with gold and silver threads. The church also has a museum and a small gift shop to visit. Speaking of museums, Kotor is home to a cat museum. If you’re an animal lover, then this one’s a spot to watch out for. It’s a testament to the locals’ love for felines; they even leave bowls of food and water all over town. The museum has on display a curated selection of photos, some up to 100 years old, across two rooms and a hallway. The pictures depict cats in human-like poses, reading books or swimming. There are also medals from international cat shows, portraits of people with their furry friends, antique books, postcards, posters, advertisements and stamps. If you’re lucky, you may catch a live exhibit inside the museum. Strays adorn the streets of Kotor as well and it’s not uncommon to find them lounging on the laps of tourists, purring and seeking affection! ✤

Perched atop St. John Mountain is Kotor Fortress or San Giovanni (St. John) castle. At 280m high, it offers sweeping views of the surrounding neighbourhood and sea. The Old Town of Kotor has vibrant nightlife too.

Some local desserts that you can try include the Montenegrin cake or Kolači and Montenegrin pancake or Palačinke. The latter is typically filled with chocolate, jam, bananas or nuts or simply dusted with sugar.

KOTOR Start in Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We recommend a guided tour around the fortified town, which is an architectural gem. Clock Tower in Arms Square is a quaint renaissance structure. Once a warehouse for ammunition – hence, Arms Square. St. Tryphon, a Romanesque masterpiece, is Kotor’s most impressive edifice. It houses a gold altar, a stone ornament depicting the life of St. Tryphon, Baroque frescos and more. There are other monuments worth visiting, particularly the Church of St. Nicholas and the 12th-century Church of St. Luke. Also, the Maritime Museum, which has on display models of ships, along with photos, paintings, uniforms, and other artefacts – a testimony to the maritime heritage of the Bay of Kotor. The fortifications surrounding the Old Town of Kotor are a UNESCO site too. Walk along the ramparts, which climb up to the top of St. John Mountain, which backs the city. The Church of Our Lady of Remedy stands on the slope of this mountain, it can only be reached by foot by climbing over 600 steps. The oldest known building in Montenegro, a Christian basilica, which dates back to the sixth century, has been found under the Church of Our Lady of Remedy.

Malo, the historic Florentine maison specialising in cashmere knitwear, presents Authentic Charme, its Autumn-Winter 22/23 collection.

The brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a collection that sublimates the enchantment of natural charm. The protagonist, with its absolute beauty, is cashmere, treated with natural washes. Warm, enveloping, refined and worked only as the skilled artisan hands of Malo have been able to do for exactly half a century. Its fibre, in all its elegance, opens up giving a full and rich appearance, inviting the eye to rest and the hand to touch. The colours too are those of natural tones: white, beige and cream, with hints of ultramarine turquoise, midnight blue and mineral greys. Pomegranate orange, intense coral, warm camel and the nuances of the darkest earth. For her, knitted trousers in several versions, made entirely without seams, in fabric stitch for sustained comfort. Comfy-chic style sweaters embellished with hand embroideries reminiscent of weaves made with basket effect ribbons. Knitwear is combined with printed silk or dresses in plissé technique in metallic colours. Hand stitching runs on the pea coats and outerwear. Sweaters with large volumes boast a honeycomb net effect in alpaca and silk. Thin silhouettes convey a graphic, feminine sign for a modern and international woman. A collection with great fitting options, to satisfy the tastes of every type of woman. A woman who wants to dress a contemporary refinement, free to interpret her style. For him, shirt jackets come in double cashmere and eco nylon. Sweaters with seed stitches, jacquards with geometric motifs, light and bright, kaleidoscopic tweeds run on men's vests to combine with light sweaters. Jumpers are constructed in soft alpaca and silk with hand-coated textures, for an all-round personal style, since each garment is unique. Enveloping and technical coats with comfortable and flowing volumes can be worn casually. Batik dyeing techniques and manual prints that play with surprising techniques are shown on Nordic sweaters or torn alpacas. In this collection too, for both men and women, the Recashmere is present, regenerated cashmere for a total look in a nod to sustainability. ✤

Director: Ron Howard Cast : Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, Tom Bateman

Well, if you’re a fan of Brad Pitt, you’ll want to catch the veteran actor at his wry and, sometimes hilarious, best. That said, this film, though billed as an action comedy, is more than a little ridiculous. With a pair of English assassin brothers known as Tangerine and Lemon and the unfeasibly young (or is that just us?) Joey King as a supposedly hardened mercenary posing as a British schoolgirl, it’s clear that everyone is playing it for laughs. Loosely, the plot revolves around Ladybug attempting to retrieve a briefcase, which is protected by killers Lemon and Tangerine, on board a train travelling across Japan. Throw a grieving father, hellbent on revenge for his son’s death, into the mix, alongside the son’s ‘schoolgirl’ killer (who has her own murderous agenda) and a few other alltime bumbling baddies and it makes for a somewhat comically gory ride. Watch out for uncredited cameos from Channing Tatum and Ryan Reynolds.

Need to Know: Billed as an action comedy, Bullet Train is based on the 2010 novel Maria Beetle by Kōtarō Isaka which sees Brad Pitt, as retired hitman Ladybug, hurtling across Japan on one of the country’s famous highspeed trains which just happens to be full to the gills of other killers – all of whom are out to get each other.

You would have to have been living under a rock in June 2018 to have missed the story of the Wild Boars junior football team – 12 boys and their assistant coach Ekkaphon Chanthawong – who, after practice one day, took the fateful decision to explore the nearby Tham Luang cave. When the boys failed to return, their concerned parents went looking and discovered their bikes at the mouth of the flooded cave. And so began a rollercoaster, nail-biting 18 days as a rescue attempt was plotted and successfully executed – totally against the odds. Initially the Thai Navy Seals arrive, but it’s immediately clear that this is very far from their speciality and it falls to British Cave Rescue Council divers Richard Stanton (Viggo Mortensen) and John Valanthen (Colin Farrell), along with supporting divers Chris Jewell and Jason Mallinson and Australian doctor Richard Harris, to attempt the seemingly impossible. From the ability of Ekkaphon to seemingly keep the boys calm through meditation, to the revelation that the youngsters were actually drugged during the final extraction, this is edge-of-the-seat stuff and, despite being fully aware of the ending, the quality of the acting and underwater cinematography makes it feel as if you are watching events in real time.

No Rules Sandy By Sylvan Esso POP ROCK

A bizarre and thought-provoking tale in which protagonist, Anders, awakes one day to find that his race has changed. Overnight his white skin has darkened and, with this transformation, comes a sea change in the way he is treated in the unnamed middle American town he calls home. But Anders soon realises he is not the only one as each and every white man undergoes the same transformation. No explanation is given for the phenomenon, it’s almost as if this is just a by the by and the purpose of the book is to force the reader to examine their own reactions to imagining such a scenario while negotiating those of Mosin Hamid’s characters.

BOOKEDFULLY

Friends and Emily’s wealthy family close ranks and the investigation stalls leaving the killer to walk free. Now, 40 years later, Andrea is sent to the town on an unrelated assignment and is determined to solve the mystery.

Sylvan Esso are an American electronic pop duo from Durham, North Carolina, formed in 2013. The band consists of singer Amelia Meath and producer Nick Sanborn. They have created their own niche of electro-pop: transparent yet intricate, airy but serious, fond of pop structures yet eager to bend them. No Rules Sandy is Sylvan Esso’s fourth LP via Loma Vista Recordings. Staying true to the album’s watchwords, the duo has tossed away any loyalty to previous sounds in this one. Packed with elaborately scaffolded production, from the ringing doorbells of Sunburn to the strings that pulsate under Meath’s voice on Your Reality. Interplay – between beats and chords, between unsettling synths and the soft fabric of Meath’s endlessly settling voice – is what Sylvan Esso do best, and No Rules Sandy has it in spades. The album lifts its name from the track Your Reality on which Meath sings “Let me remember how to live my life / Were there rules originally? / Or are we learning how to be / Surreal but free?” over pulsating synth and strings arrangements as the phrase “no rules Sandy” echoes in the background. In the opening track, Moving, she calmly muses, “How can I be moved / When everything is moving?” over a hissing, scurrying beat, octave-swooping blips and stereo-panning whooshes that keep things spinning. The beautiful Coming Back To You pares everything back to Sylvan Esso’s foundation stones, with radiant-sounding guitar and Meath’s celestial voice. Pale Waves are an English rock band from Manchester, formed in 2014. Their early work is often described as ‘80s-inspired indie rock or synth-pop. However, with their second album, the band have begun to experiment with the pop-punk genre. In Unwanted , they wholeheartedly embrace early 2000s pop-punk, an evolution that has entranced fans. Released via Dirty Hit, the album begins with an instant burst of angsty punk in Lies, the perfect breakup ballad. The song’s edgy-punk tune of choppy guitar and drums sets the tone for a vengeful, yet uplifting anthem. The title-track Unwanted features classic rock guitar notes and revolves around feelings of worthlessness caused by someone you love. The album touches on many other themes such as separation on Without You, finding your tribe on Reasons To Live, standing up for those targeted by bullies on The Hard Way and letting go of someone who destroyed you on Only Problem. The closing track So Sick (Of Missing You) feels like the perfect conclusion. It speaks to the lovesick – one among many examples of Pale Waves’ gift for crafting music that resonates. Packed with 40 minutes of ferocious energy stylistically akin to pop-punk greats such as Avril Lavigne, Paramore and Sum-41 – yet still strikingly original in its own right – Unwanted is a body of work that will certainly live up to fans’ expectations.

is not a happy man and he wants them prosecuted for harming Venice’s image. Is it just us or does this seem to be going a bit far?

Game publisher Annapurna Interactive even promoted the product by renting out a New York cat café and giving copies away to rescue organisations for fundraising raffles. Apparently about 80% of the game’s development team are cat owners who took inspiration from their own pets as well as a familiar orange stray tabby – we hope he got a home and no longer has to wander the mean streets, considering his starring role.

The importance of representation is becoming ever more recognised, particularly with different segments of society voicing how important it is to see themselves, or people who look like them, appearing on stage and screen. So, it’s no great surprise that kids often feel the same way. With a deaf four-yearold at home, British mum Clare Tawell was disappointed to find a lack of dolls available for differently abled kids, so she decided to create her own. And Clare’s dolls don’t just have hearing aids, she now also offers baby dolls with cleft lips and palates, birthmarks and other conditions. The much-loved Barbie, aside from getting ready to star in an upcoming film, has also gone down the representation route with the iconic dolls coming with hearing aids and a range of other disabilities. We love the idea of toys that are representative of the kids playing with them, it’s been a long time coming but we’re glad they’re here at last. Hello Dolly!

We couldn’t help but smile at the tale of two Aussie adventurers who took to the sedate and beautiful canals of Venice on motorised surf boards, much to the horror of Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who branded them “imbeciles”. The city dignitary posted video of the pair on social media offering a free dinner for anyone who could identify the brazen boarders and his wish was soon granted.

You all know how much we at FACT love our furry friends, so we’re delighted to tell you about a video game that allows players to have fun at the same time as raising funds for stray moggies. The game, Stray, follows a daring orange tabby as he negotiates unidentified sludge and decodes clues in a seemingly abandoned city. And, thanks to online fundraising platforms, gamers are live streaming to eager cat loving audiences and raising funds for cat rescue at the same time.

Yes, we know Venice banned personal watercraft some years ago due to overcrowding by the likes of kayaks and paddle boards but, to us, traversing the Grand Canal on a surf board sounds like great fun and we reckon Sig Brugnaro is in danger of branding Venice a city of misery gutses.

You have only recently come to Bahrain. What decided to you to make the move and how are you finding the country so far?

fact magazine122 Tugce Goksel Director of Public Relations and Communications, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay ISLAND INSIDER

Our hotel is the destination of choice for both business and leisure travellers. The gastronomy experiences will be further elevated in the upcoming months with new tastes and projects. We will bring back the highly-demanded Arabic pop-up at the beach. You will also see more projects related to social events, celebrations and outside catering, which are key business segments. Also, with the Festive Season and, of course, the World Cup approaching, we are preparing pleasant surprises and experiences for our guests, so stay tuned! Please tell us a bit about your role and what is your favourite part of the job?

My passion for travel was ignited early on by my parents, who are also in the hospitality industry. I travelled a lot due to both business and leisure; still, I was always looking for a reason to step outside my comfort zone in Istanbul for an international experience, and a couple of opportunities in different countries came up at the same time. I knew Bahrain was a great destination due to its prosperity, the convenience of life and the friendliness of people, so I didn't need to think much before making this move. Last but not least, I was always impressed by the culture of the Four Seasons and I knew that our hotel was one of the best properties within the Four Seasons portfolio. So, being a part of this family was an inspiring and exciting journey for me to take on. I love it so far and the people in Bahrain being very friendly, helpful and welcoming made my adaptation smooth and easy. the people in our organisation and their craftsmanship is the most exciting part for me. And, of course, meeting with people from all around the world and the great network it provides are some of the best features.

What should visitors look out for at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay over the coming months?

I handle the marketing communications and public relations activities of Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. My primary responsibilities are effectively using digital and traditional marketing tools, establishing the social media strategy and brand collaborations, managing media relations, promoting all the hotel experiences and ensuring everything is up to brand standards. My favourite part of the job is that it is far from routine. Of course, there are core responsibilities, but in today's rapidly-changing marketing environment and with new trends, you always need to keep yourself updated and develop new perspectives. So, marketing communications is the perfect fit for someone like me who is very keen on reading and curious about learning new things. Also, I love the storytelling aspect of my job.
