elcome to the September issue in which I finally admit that the heat in our part of the world is becoming too much. Anyone else, or is it just me? This month we’ve taken a look at how digitalisation is transforming our lives. From apps for education and

commerce and from the entertainment industry to home security. I have to confess, being of a certain age, much of it passes me by. Don’t get me wrong, I can Facebook and Tweet with the best of them but when it comes to setting up a Zoom meeting for 100 people or using home tech, I’m a bit lost. So, it made interesting reading for me. Elsewhere, we’ve sampled some of the best dining options across the island from a new Greek experience at Opa, to Mexican delights at Cantina Kahlo and the deliciousness of Royal Thai. It’s safe to say, I’m somewhat chubbier than I was last month. Our extended motoring section brings you a test drive in the fantastic MINI John Cooper Works, with which our resident car fanatic was more than a little impressed. And we also chatted to Tom Lee, the man at the helm of MG Motor across the region, who explained the brand’s meteoric rise. And make sure to check out the Hotel Highlight, this seriously classy venue has us longing to book a trip Stateside. As always, there’s our usual round-up of great gadgets, music, film and book releases and a look at the coming season’s fashions.

YOUR HEALTH WILL ALWAYS COME FIRST The thing about dining from Healthy Calorie is that it's not just about opting for a cleaner food option, but also about choosing a nutritious meal that your body will thank you for.

W

ith the opening of the newest branch in Busaiteen, conveniently right opposite RCSI, Healthy Calorie furthers its mission to provide healthier and cleaner food to the population, with ease. Evidentially a leader in the fast-casual dining scene for wholesome food, Healthy Calorie has always been one of our favourite clean food options – but it’s really more than just that. Providing high-quality, well-sourced ingredients and vegetables from all around the world, this fast-food spot has stood by its vision since its opening by providing customers with a cleaner meal option – with the right nutrients and proteins in their yummiest form! Take it from us – we know that giving in to our cravings is something that we can’t get rid of, so we're here on a journey to ensure those choices aren't ones we come to regret. With poor nutrition potentially a direct contributor to stress, tiredness and our capacity to work (let alone illnesses and other health problems), we're constantly working to swap out these poor habits for better ones. And it's easier than you think! Whether you're craving a juicy burger – the chicken-spinach mix is freshly made and put together in whole grain bread – or in the mood to use some chopsticks – Asian-styled noodles, cooked with olive oil, topped with either chicken or beef and fresh veggies, making you feel like you're somewhere in Little China – Healthy Calorie's well-balanced meals are a direct show of the 8

dedicated chefs and team, who continue to offer great food that allows us to cave in to our cravings, with a clear conscience. Constantly changing it up and adding new items to the menu – stay on the lookout for some sweet surprises soon – Healthy Calorie also has an exclusive menu of Keto Platters and High Protein dishes, putting together the right ingredients as well as being considerate enough to always include a calorie count. Smart eating is the right way to go! Did you know that Healthy Calorie, which opened in 2010, was actually the first to introduce the concept of a calorie count for the dishes in Bahrain? Alongside ALWAYS mentioning the number of carbs, protein and fat that you’ll be consuming from one of their dishes, this is just another show of the establishment’s dedication to putting their customers’ health first. With only four months of the year left, we’d like to remind you that it’s never too late to make a different choice. Tweaking your mindset and making the right choices for your body only takes a single moment, and when you come to realise what you've been able to do, you'll be beyond thankful to yourself for turning it all around. NEW AND OLD Two new limited-edition coffees from Nespresso enrich the Ispirazione Italiana range, celebrating Italian master roasting through the ages. Over the years coffee roasting styles have evolved. Indeed, despite Italy’s long coffee history, the speciality coffee scene in the country is flourishing. Nespresso has captured the tastes and aromas of both the traditional and modern with Ispirazione Novecento and Ispirazione Millennio, each of them a true masterpiece of Italian roasting history. Ispirazione Novecento New limited edition Ispirazione Novecento has been inspired by the classic Italian espressos of the 1940s. It is a smoky dark cup that paints a picture of the country’s early stand-up coffee bars, in an era when roasting was slower and often wood-fired, and blends were dictated by the beans available in wartime Europe. Anchored in Brazil, Ispirazione Novecento is embellished with heirloom Arabicas and West African Robustas to give an intense espresso with raw spicy, nutty brown flavours and a dense, dark crema. Ispirazione Millennio The limited edition Ispirazione Millennio, meanwhile, takes its aromatic cues from the new trends of artisanal roasting sweeping the country, alongside growing preferences for brighter, fruitier flavours. To achieve this fresh, modern taste, lighter and shorter roasted Brazilian and Colombian Arabicas have been blended with beans from the Indian subcontinent. The result is a well-rounded and pleasantly intense coffee with spicy notes, fine acidity and a hint of fruit. 12

fact magazine

Art comes in many roasts “Nespresso’s Ispirazione Italiana is more than a range of Italian-inspired coffee, it’s a skilfully crafted masterpiece, balancing varied aromas, tastes and geographical influences,” says Yassir Max Corpataux, Nespresso Coffee Ambassador for the Middle East and Africa. The permanent range of seven coffee capsules offers a broad variety of espressos and ristrettos, each capturing the roasting essence of an Italian city or region, from the spicy North African influences in Palermo to the rich depth of history of Rome. The range is available in Original with certain coffees also lending themselves to being prepared as longer coffees with milk. Inspiration for the budding coffee artist To accompany this launch, Nespresso is introducing its popular small Nomad travel mug in a blooming rose colour, as well as releasing new recipe inspirations to elevate your coffee moments. Limited editions Ispirazione Novecento and Ispirazione Millennio will be available online and at Nespresso boutiques from September 3. ✤

LIVING IN A DIGITAL WORLD Recent years have seen an explosion of digitalisation in our daily lives with technology becoming essential in everything from shopping and entertainment to education and healthcare. We look at some of the innovations and also their not so obvious uses.

F

rom crisis comes innovation and opportunity and when Covid-19 struck, it forced societal changes around the globe. In response, businesses and schools alike began to look for ways to continue their operations remotely, thanks to the Internet. They turned to technology, collaboration platforms and video conferencing to remain engaged with their colleagues, clients, and students while working from home offices. It’s a route the developed world was already heading down but a report from McKinsey & Company claims the pandemic may have accelerated the process by several years. But, outside these sectors, technology has been developing apace from digital homes to performing arts and even global projects quietly taking place behind the scenes.

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT Bahrain won worldwide acclaim for the way it tackled the pandemic. While boots-on-the-ground policing certainly helped with enforcement of restrictions, the BeAware app, introduced by the eGovernment Authority, provides users with a huge range of services as well as the latest information that’s constantly updated. Available in six languages, to reflect the Kingdom’s diverse population, registration allows users to register for vaccinations and also delivers that all-important green (clean) shield to your mobile phone. Without it, access to many services and venues is not allowed – though thankfully, this is about to change, thanks in large part to the app's success. The BeAware app may be the first time many of us have interacted with Bahrain Information and e-Government Authority (IGA). But in a briefing earlier this year IGA CEO Mohammed Al Qaed said that, in 2020, all essential government services had been migrated to various digital channels. The IGA is now providing more than 500 services digitally, mostly through the national portal Bahrain.bh, which received 11 million visitors in 2020 and increased total revenues collected by 48%. Services cover areas from vehicle registration inquiries and payments for e-Government services to a range of options in the education sector. But, of course, while the availability of e-government services makes our lives easier, when we think about apps, we’re usually looking at somewhat more fun options, from food delivery to listening to music, not to mention maps, without which many of us would be completely lost – thank you Google. According to statista.com 88,500 new apps were registered in February 2021, the lowest number of new releases since March 2019. And, as of the first quarter of this year, there were around 3.48 million apps available worldwide! But, what do they all do? According to phonearena.com, some of the weirdest apps around include Wakie (didn’t your mum ever tell you not to talk to strangers?) and Pimple Popper, which does exactly as the name implies and is really quite gross. And then, of course there are

20

those face and body swap options… What we want to know is where the inspiration comes from (and how do we get in on the game?).

NICE TO MEET YOU Hands up anyone in business who has not been on a Zoom call in the last 18 months. Yeah, not too many. And, of course, though it’s by far the most recognisable and profitable, a plethora of other video conferencing tools exist such as Google Meet Meet, Blue Jeans and Microsoft Teams. Without them, some areas of commerce would have completely shut down due to the pandemic. And, while that sharp spike in usage is already dropping as restrictions are lifted, a study conducted by Boston Consulting Group found that, in six countries surveyed – the USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan and India – more than 40% of companies expect remote or hybrid, flexible (office/home) working to continue as a new business model. Many reported raised productivity and a boost in employee engagement and satisfaction too. In the education space too, technology has allowed educators to continue teaching despite school and college closures. Some, like the American University of Bahrain, were already well equipped to take their operations online, while others struggled at first. But with students, teachers and parents becoming evermore tech savvy, the classroom is as likely to be the kitchen table as a school-based environment. Some countries have allowed all schools to reopen as normal, but this has, almost invariably, led to a rise in Covid-19 positives and it is now likely that schools will be requiring a greater degree of distancing than many educational establishments can manage, given space restrictions. So, some flexible split-attendance or blended learning is likely to continue. While online teaching appears, overall, to have been a success for developed countries with good Internet access, there have

been major concerns about areas where that access is neither good nor reliable. There are also the psychological affects from deprivation of peer and teacher interaction to take into consideration. A study by the Kentucky Counseling Center in the US found that: “Since the pandemic, there’s a lack of interaction and students face social isolation. This greatly impacts a student’s mental health. The lack of social interaction in online learning leads to feelings of loneliness, lack of motivation, and isolation.” The same report outlines the negative effects on parents who have taken on home schooling as well as their regular jobs. And the intense level of ‘information overload’ in this style of learning has coined the phrase ‘Zoom Fatigue’. Interestingly, Zoom itself has asked its workers to return to the office.

Zoom generated USD2.6 billion revenue in 2020, a 317% increase year-on-year.

THE DIGITAL HOME Do you have Alexa or Siri in your home to turn your music on and off, change the channels on your TV and whatnot? We all love these voice-activated assistants, right? But, have you considered just how useful digital applications in the home can be for differently abled people? Particularly for those with a visual impairment. Recently, a blind reporter told the BBC World Service how she prepared for a home ‘date night’ in her digitally-enabled home. From instructing her system to play some romantic music to cooking from a talking recipe book, using a digital weighing scales and a cup with a beeper alarm to tell her when she had reached required amounts of liquid, using a voice command to set the cooking time and temperature for the oven, and then heading to her wardrobe where an app could scan audio-labelled clothing and make-up items to help her choose her outfit and lipstick. For those of us who don’t face physical challenges, it’s difficult to imagine the feeling of liberation that must bring. There’s also the security aspect of home digitisation: turn lights on and off remotely or on a timer; use a door camera to see who’s visiting and even talk to them before you decide whether to let them in; some people have even gone so far as to install panic rooms, fully equipped with access to local emergency services and seemingly impenetrable doors, to which they can retreat if they feel threatened. So, next time you call Alexa out for misunderstanding your request or playing the wrong music, remember ‘she’ can do a whole lot more than turn up the volume and close the curtains.

Digital spaces can also keep us safe in other ways. The pandemic has seen the implementation of pure, or virus-free buildings. Using patented cleaning, filtration and particle monitoring technology coupled with temperature checks and isolation rooms, they guarantee a 99.99% virus-free environment.

LET THEM ENTERTAIN YOU Platforms such as YouTube have been entertaining us in the digital space for many years. You only have to look at the success of Justin Bieber who started out with the upload of a grainy video at the age of 12… the rest, as they say, is history. Today, according to the UK’s Guardian newspaper, more than 2 billion of us visit YouTube monthly and upwards of 500 hours of content is uploaded every minute! During the pandemic, many stars have publicised their performances in the digital space, often raising cash for worthy causes while doing so. Even traditional festivals, such as the UK’s massive Glastonbury gathering, went online – with the service eventually being made free when would-be viewers experienced difficulty in accessing the live feed. In Bahrain our own Sound + Fiction Festival was forced online with organiser Ali Al Saeed telling FACT: “It’s been well over a year since our last official gig. What’s clear to us now is that even when live music returns, it will never be the same. And the challenge we face is how to adapt to this reality and find new ways to sustain the scene and grow it. We’re looking at a new approach that centres around context, curation and focused experiences.” Many have bemoaned the lack of live entertainment but organisations such as museums, cultural authorities, dance and theatre companies and even libraries have stepped up making a whole range of never-before-seen content available. You can tour the tombs of ancient Egyptians and traverse the byways of quaint English towns, all from the comfort of you own living room. And these things are unlikely to disappear as restrictions are lifted, so overall, a win-win. 24

AND THERE’S MORE Aside from the everyday uses of technology and digitalisation, there are some incredible global projects taking place that you just might not know about. Human Cell Atlas – an international collaborative consortium that charts the cell types in the healthy body, across time from development to adulthood, and eventually to old age. This enormous undertaking, larger even than the Human Genome Project, will transform our understanding of the 37.2 trillion cells in the human body. It is only possible now thanks to global collaboration, technological and computational breakthroughs, and science at great scale. Its potential implications for biology and medicine are phenomenal and it’s also absolutely fascinating. The Migratory Connectivity Project – all about the migratory patterns of birds and mammals. Given the rapid advancement of 26

technology and migratory connectivity data, this project was created to facilitate development of new technologies and serve as a portal for gathering and disseminating information. The ultimate goal is to advance the conservation and understanding of animals throughout their full life cycle by promoting the science of migratory connectivity. Zipline – drones are delivering live-saving medical supplies, including blood, in isolated areas and Zipline is currently working with 25 hospitals across a trial project in Uganda. Amazon and Google are also both trialling drone delivery technology which, if successful, will be a game changer for remote communities everywhere. THE NEW MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS EDITION

MINI continues its evolution with a new generation of superior models.

I

t’s been 20 years since the successful launch of the modern MINI, with the brand still enjoying solid sales on these well-loved vehicles. The MINI brand has become known for its agile driving capabilities, high technology standards and overall superior quality compared to many other competitors in its segment. Now this beloved British brand has evolved into the latest model generation, with the MINI three-door, MINI five-door and MINI Convertible all being given an intensive makeover. This month, we at FACT magazine were handed the keys to our very first MINI experience, compliments of the outstanding team at Euro Motors. We were fortunate enough to be offered the MINI threedoor John Cooper Works (JCW) Edition for the day. The JCW models are high-performance vehicles, fitted with superior engines, interiors and performance capabilities, along with unique exteriors. The MINI’s new front design displays the characteristic hexagonal radiator grille, an enlarged black surround as well as the hallmark round MINI headlights. These headlights are LED and are now fitted as standard. Typical MINI proportions and short overhangs define the view of the flanks, whilst the freshly designed, characteristic side scuttles complement the new body colours, including the 18-inch, Circuit Spoke Black Design, JCW light-alloy wheels. The rear apron too has been upgraded in looks, with LED back lights in the Union Jack design now fitted as standard. The original multitone roof and matching exterior mirror caps are beautiful to look at and amongst the most striking features of the vehicle. All-in-all, we found the exterior to be aesthetically pleasing and well put together. Internally, our JCW model housed a stylish, comfortable and well-equipped cabin. The supportive sport seats provide a great driving position, while the quality materials, finishes and trimmings used throughout the interior are usually to be found in a vehicle with a much higher price tag. The JCW trim also features a nappa leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and larger thumb rests, JCW door sill trims, an anthracite-coloured roof liner and stainless-steel pedals. Eccentric elements have also been incorporated into the interior design such as the LED light ring framing the central instrument. This MINI’s 8.8-inch colour touchscreen display comes complete with SiriusXM satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo and touch-sensitive ‘favourite buttons’, Piano Black high-gloss surfaces as well as Bluetooth phone and streaming audio. A multifunctional instrument display, five inches in diameter, is present behind the steering wheel and displays all drivingrelevant information, check-control messages and status displays of the driver assistance systems. Additionally, the operating system controller situated on the centre console now sports an all-black surface along with a navigation system. A choice of two colour schemes for the central instrument and digital cockpit displays can be accessed through the control system menu. Performance wise, the MINI John Cooper Works is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four, petrol engine. 30

fact magazine

Combined with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, this zippy vehicle produces 231hp or 170kW. This allows the MINI JCW to accelerated from 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds and to deliver a top speed of 246km/h. Boasting adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes and an electrically locking front differential, this exceptional compact car delivers precise handling and a go-kart feeling experience. In fact, we spent several hours embracing the sporty feel of this road-hugging vehicle, never without a huge smile on our faces. The JCW comes with a Driver Assistance Package with an extended range of functions. These functions ensure maximum comfort and safety and include new lane departure warning, new Active Cruise Control (now featuring a Stop and Go function) and standard automated emergency braking. Thanks to consistently optimised emission control technology, all model variants comply with the Euro 6d emission standard. Our first experience in the new three-door MINI JCW Edition was thoroughly enjoyable and we can honestly say that the fun factor of this magnificent little machine is amongst the highest we have ever experienced. ✤

fact magazine

VIEW FROM THE FORECOURT •

MG Motor has experienced a phenomenal rise culminating in the MG HS being crowned as Middle East Car of the Year 2020. What makes MG so successful both in the region and internationally? There are a variety of reasons behind our success in the region. Firstly, our products have proved extremely popular with customers. The MG range consistently offers exceptional value for money, with sleek designs, advanced technology, high standards of quality and elevated performance, backed by a market-leading guarantee. Customers also benefit from the strength of our strategic partnerships in the region. We are proud to be working with the very best retailers in each Middle Eastern market, ranging from the GCC to Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon. Their work, whether from a sales perspective, marketing, aftersales services or how they conduct business, has been outstanding. The unbeatable quality of service they provide, whether from a sales, marketing or aftersales perspective, ensures the very best consumer experience. All of which is supported by our regional training academy and regional distribution centre, both in Dubai. Another factor that makes us successful in this region is our brand positioning. In addition to connecting more with our millennial customers by reflecting their mindsets, we are producing adventurous and bold digital content that is shared via our social media channels. You have previously stated your aim was to bring MG into the top 10 regional best sellers. What position does the brand currently hold and how do you aim to move into the top 10? I’m pleased to be able to say that we have now broken into the top 10 of car manufacturers in the GCC. As you state, breaking into the top 10 was indeed one of our key targets, which we had actually set even before the pandemic, so we were delighted to be able to hit this target, despite the impact of the pandemic.

We enjoyed success across the board last year. Our market share in the region’s biggest market, Saudi Arabia, rose to 4.2% last year, off the back of an astonishing 89% increase in sales. We also made important breakthroughs in new regional markets such as Jordan and Iraq. Currently, we are ranked eighth in the GCC for 2021, which is a huge achievement. But, our aspirations are not based on simply being in the top 10. Importantly, this growth demonstrates the increased understanding and awareness of our British heritage, and the trust placed in the brand by customers across the region. The all-electric SUV, the MG ZS EV, is starting to roll out across the region. How is it being received, and can you tell us about MG’s future plans for eco-friendly motoring? MG Motor’s ability to adapt swiftly to market changes has helped us to thrive. The MG ZS EV is testament to that. The ZS EV’s versatility, high standard of options, sleek design and impressive performance, all provide an optimum experience for customers. We pride ourselves on innovating as we find gaps in the market. This car is a solution for those looking for a costefficient electric car. For these reasons, we have been pleased to note the positive reception it has received from customers not just regionally, but internationally as well. We are always looking at the approach of different regions and markets to electric cars and take this into account with our own planning. This then incorporates our own goals in relation to environmental friendliness and adherence to different countries’ laws regarding electric vehicles. MG Motor is focused on being a market leader in the sales of electric vehicles, and we are actively considering this in our regional strategy. We are planning to launch and introduce the MG HS plug-in hybrid car in the region soon. This car will be technologically advanced and will feature 5G internet connection. ✤ fact magazine

APP-LICIOUS What’s on the smartphone agenda for September?

PicsArt

Minimalist

Point, click and share: smartphones have sparked an explosion in photography and sharing of moments on social media platforms. Where the default camera apps and options from Android, Apple and Microsoft continue to improve with every software update, all these are complemented by a rising swell of apps for shooting, editing and sharing. With the world opening and travel getting easier, you should consider PicsArt to retouch your photographs and selfies. When you talk to people who are serious about their mobile photography PicsArt often comes up early in the conversation. Yes, it has filters, like most social photo apps, but its editing tools pack more power than the herd. It provides a lot of creative control, over the top image-editing tools and a diverse range of attractive filters. In addition, you can select or create fun stickers in no time, combine pictures into highly customisable collages, add artistic text and share. The full-featured camera module includes pre-capture effects and photo tools. You can also use Remix Chat to share and collaboratively edit photos with the other PicsArt users or only with your friends.

It’s back to school with blended learning and many would require a time management app or tools to strategically divide their day whilst keeping their focus. Some Pomodoro Apps are straightforward time management tools — giving you a digital way to track 25 minutes, followed by a five-minute break. Various other apps offer customisation, including a sound library for you to play ambient noise or music while you’re on task. Try Minimalist — a Pomodoro timer app — designed for people who prefer a sleek interface. When you open the app, you’re taken to a blank white screen. From there, you can swipe down to add new tasks. You can assign due dates to each task and also give the task a priority, from low to high. High priority tasks are raised up to the top of your screen. Then you can click on the task and Minimalist takes you to another mostly white screen with a thin black circle that works as your timer. So, with Minimalist you can specify the daily tasks, prioritise them with alarms and divide them with a timer. Easy management!

INVESTMENT & EXPANSION ON THE HORIZON FACT quizzed Mateo Ramos – CEO Foodvest Holding about his own business philosophy and the group’s plans for the future.

46

fact magazine

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT •

What does Venture Capital Bank/Foodvest Holding do? Foodvest is a partnership between private investors and Venture Capital Bank (VCB is headquartered in Manama). We invest in food, food technology, supply chain/food production, et cetera We are open to projects across the region. Which brands do you work with in Bahrain? We directly own Fuddruckers and Caribou Coffee – along with our own food manufacturing facility, the ‘Bou Bakery’. With successful operations in Florida in hand, what made you decide to come to the Middle East? While I was living in Florida and developing my own family concepts, I was working with Burger King (BK) US Operations in various roles. They asked me to come out to the Middle East to support BK regionally with Olayan. I was also involved with Texas Chicken and Buffalo Wild Wings. Once I visited the region to consider the opportunity, it was clear to me that I wanted to leave home and work abroad – and given the opportunity to operate three major brands, it wasn’t a difficult decision. Food and beverage (F&B) in the Middle East, in general, is changing faster than elsewhere and with more exciting developments. For example, home delivery developed here in this region, 15 years before its wide-scale adoption in the United States. The region has a favourable business model that rewards risk-taking, and a clientele who possess a higher will to try new things. Don’t get me wrong – the US is my home and I will return one day to utilise all the skills I have learned abroad – but this is where the action is right now.

How was your experience doing business in the Gulf region compared with the US? It’s a completely different business model than the US in both investment and operation. Multiculturalism, earlier and faster adaptation of technology, shorter concept lifespan and property leases and dependence on social media are examples of the differences. Using the case of home delivery – because the Gulf features low fuels costs, low maintenance costs, low insurance costs (due to a culture that doesn’t encourage and reward litigation) – entrepreneurs could develop the channel. These barriers, along with many others, exist in the US and developed Western economies and sometimes stifle innovation and entrepreneurship. Have you found it different operating in Bahrain to the rest of the Gulf? I always say that doing business in the UAE/Qatar/Kuwait is like opening restaurants in Las Vegas or LA. Bahrain is very similar to rural Texas or Florida. In the other markets, you have to be flashy and appeal to a tourist client where the relationship is short-term and transactional (this contributes to the abbreviated concept lifespan). In Bahrain, the consumer behaves more traditionally – more rationally – rewarding brands holding favourable priceto-quality propositions with continual return business. Having managed more than 100 restaurants at one point, what precipitated the move to partnership with an investment bank? Fabulous question. The opportunity with Foodvest was much more than a traditional restaurant operator role. Normally,

restaurant operators are tasked with delivery of tailored KPI’s (key performance indicators) along lines that don’t always translate into the success of the overall organisation. I have been a restaurant owner in some form since I was in my early 20s. I have the mind of an owner-operator and I was excited for the opportunity to teach others this mindset. In addition, the experience of running an F&B company from the position of a venture capital entity, with the requirements of raising capital and deploying it successfully, was something I needed to do. We understand your strategy for Foodvest includes expansion in the Bahrain (and Saudi?) market. Can you give us an outline of what the short- and longer-term future looks like? Yes, we are actively looking at investments in UAE/Saudi/ Oman at this time – with both our current brands and additional ones. For the remainder of 2021 with the current portfolio – we have two additional Caribou locations under construction, in addition to a planned remodel (location TBC). Entering 2022 – we have planned an additional three new Caribou locations plus the expansion of Fuddruckers into Muharraq. In addition, we will be turning our attention to improving the image of some of our older stores in key locations. It will be fundamental for us to finish the re-image of Fuddruckers across all locations to mark the 25th anniversary of the brand. For Caribou, look for us to continue our investment and expansion in the digital sphere with enhancements within our proprietary mobile applications and loyalty, and further implementation of technology within the units as we remodel and improve the guest experience. Our future is not simply grounded in unit expansion. We will continue to invest in product development – Caribou Bahrain was the first coffee chain in the Middle East to launch a full 48

fact magazine

gluten-free and vegan line nationally. We will be expanding this offering starting in 2022 with our annual ‘New Year, New Bou’ promotion which focuses on starting the year off with the dietary choice of modern consumers. How has the group managed to come through the pandemic with the ability to look towards future investment? When an economic crisis hits – and I’ve been through the 2001 and 2008 shocks in the US, in addition to the hospitality-sector contraction years of 2015-2018 in the UAE and KSA – you will see many market players divert funds from marketing and expansion to weather the storm. We chose the opposite track. We were already shifting our growth ambitions away from malls and towards drive-thru locations within communities. We decided to accelerate this. We raised capital and opened more locations while also increasing and improving our marketing spend and adding headcount to our support and leadership functions. As a result, we have been more or less able to maintain our revenue at pre-pandemic levels. Credit goes to our ownership who bought in to our plan and supported us as we delivered. Do you have any words of wisdom to offer to others in the hospitality/food and beverage market at what is a difficult time for everyone? Agility and humility. It’s important to realise that what worked in the past will most likely not work in the future. The world changes fast and competitors adapt quickly. One must stay humble, and always be looking for the next avenue to deliver a better experience to your guest. We are, hopefully, nearing the end of the largest shock to our business (ever?). But be assured, there will be more challenges ahead and the race to prepare for them starts now. See you in the restaurants. ✤

ORGANIC AND SUSTAINABLE Chef Susy Massetti, founder of L’Orto, on her passion for clean food and Nonna’s home cooking. 50

fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

You’re very well known in Bahrain and have opened various popular eateries over the last decade. Is L’Orto, finally, what you’ve been waiting to bring us all along? Yes, L’Orto is the combination of two dreams that I have been pursuing for many, many years, that of a restaurant and an organic farm. L’Orto is sustained by Roots & Shoots, where I can almost tailor my production, planting et cetera around the needs of my kitchen. At Roots & Shoots we produce the chickens, the eggs and all the herbs and vegetables needed for L’Orto, all organic using no tillage; a regenerative type of agriculture and, more importantly, sustainable. Soon we plan to also have a small selection of dairy products as well. Your emphasis is on clean and organic ingredients. Where do you source these? Besides our own farm, of course we use, as much as possible, local producers that are either organic or use hydroponics systems, although unfortunately there are very few. We try to limit our overseas imports whenever possible although it cannot be avoided completely. We also use local fishermen that do not use bottom trawling nets and are mindful of the environment.

What do you like to do when you’re not in the kitchen? Is there something you can only do in Bahrain? Actually yes, spending time on my farm! I know it sounds cheesy but honestly, it’s like taking a short ‘vacation’ in a green, peaceful oasis that is full of life. It is truly something else! I love watching the animals and catching up with the guys on what is going on and just simply sitting under a green tree! What is your signature dish? Please explain the development and what makes this dish so special, both to you and your guests. La Pasta Rifatta, which in Italian means ‘pasta cooked again’. This is a peasant, homey, as-it-comes dish that my grandmother used to do quite often and of which I have very fond memories. It is, very simply put, pasta left overs (sauce and all) cooked again in a pan until the bottom becomes crispy and served with a generous helping of fresh sauce. At L’Orto we bring it to the next level by topping it with our wonderful fresh burrata and a good drizzle of fruity extra virgin olive oil! Our guests seem to like it a lot, so thank you Nonna! ✤ fact magazine

A CULINARY ODYSSEY

Liz O’Reilly jumps the queue to find out what’s causing a 10-day wait for tables at new Greek restaurant Opa. 52

fact magazine

NEW IN TOWN •

A

rriving very early evening to secure one of those oh-so-elusive tables, I was immediately struck by how much work has gone into making Opa, at the Royal Saray Resort Managed by Accor, look like the real deal. In a sweet touch, you stroll along a path brimming with bougainvillea and ride in an almost hidden, greenery covered elevator to the first-floor lobby. Once inside, the scheme, as might be expected, is blue and white. But this is no lip service version with the common designer’s sprinkling of turquoise and white, lazily used to evoke a sense of place. Oh no! Opa actually looks like the traditional tavernas of my youth spent working in the Greek islands. From a wall of busts behind the bar, to giant Greek maidens as pillars seemingly holding up the roof, a recreation of the libraries of the ancients and a fresco that could well be Aphrodite, it’s all there. Yes, it might sound over the top, but trust me, it’s really not. Taste and a sense of authenticity have dictated the décor. More bougainvillea draped across the seating areas and around the DJ booth, hidden behind an arrangement of large white, water pots, truly took me back to outdoor dining and late-night dancing and plate smashing, more years ago than I care to mention. Add the fact that the chefs and virtually all the staff are actually Greek, and I knew I was in for a treat. In a true echo of Greek hospitality, we were urged to sample virtually the whole menu. So, please excuse me if I wax lyrical a bit and highlight some true classics with an haute cuisine twist. First up was the Feta Kataifi, vermicelli wrapped feta cheese with lemon, thyme and honey. If ever an appetiser was designed to excite the taste buds for what was to come, then this was it. The crunch of the outer coating melting into the salty cheese, topped with tart, piped lemon curd really needed the sweetness of the honey drizzle to complete an outstanding flavour combination. Prawn Saganaki was possibly one of my favourite dishes – fact magazine

53

• NEW IN TOWN though, in truth, it would be hard to choose. A very traditional serving of big, juicy, perfectly cooked prawns in what seems to be a simple sauce of tomato paste, roasted peppers and feta. However, Opa GM Victor explained that the triumph of this sauce is in a secret mix of herbs, which raises it to a whole different level. Do as we did, grab some of the delicious homemade pitta bread and mop it up as the Greeks do. Another quintessential dish, which will be familiar to anyone who has ever travelled to the Greek islands and highlands, is the spinach and feta pie. It’s a family favourite and served everywhere from the fishermen’s wharves to Stavros’ beach café. But, of course, the Opa kitchen goes further. Served as spiral wraps of delicate, crispy filo pastry, it is packed with that oh so familiar, comforting mix of chopped, wilted spinach, soft gooey feta and a creamy topping of spun cheese with dill and leeks. It might not look like the ones the Greek Yia Yias make, but it sure tastes like them. Before I talk about the mains, I must mention the hummus. Yes, I know this humble dish can be found in every restaurant on the island. But, at Opa, as you’ll have gathered, things are done differently. The Opa hummus is a signature, tableside show preparation in which the chef arrives with a tray laden with accompaniments, including crispy lamb, spring onions, pine nuts, mint, coriander and pickles, and creates a stunning ensemble before your eyes. Perfectly executed marinated salmon with fat beads of spinach rice in avgolemono (egg and lemon) sauce and, clearly homemade, saffron aioli is a treat for the taste buds. And, sticking with seafood, for my dining companion, the Marinated Grilled Octopus would take some beating. I stole a bit, just to check, and was delighted with both taste and texture – delicate and sweet with not a hint of rubberiness, the fisherman who caught this would be rightly proud. Vegetarians will not go wrong with the Imam Bayildi, roasted aubergine, caramelised onions, roasted pine nuts and Greek yoghurt. If you like Baba Ghanoush, you will love this. The smoky taste of the aubergine is teased out by the pine nuts and the onions add a delicate sweetness to render this dish a palate pleaser. And so, to what, for me, was the star dish of the day among so many outstanding possibilities. The Kleftiko Lamb quite honestly took my breath away. The name translates as ‘stolen’ and comes from the days of the Greek revolution when the rebel fighters [Klefts] would steal a lamb from the hillsides to survive. Marinated in garlic, olive oil and lemon juice, it is slow baked wrapped in parchment to seal the flavour. And this slow process results in flesh so tender that it literally falls apart to the fork and melts on the tongue – absolute perfection! Last, but very definitely not least, came the dessert, which is also served as a chef showpiece at the tableside. A crispy filo shell filled with baklava, scoops of multi-flavoured homemade ice cream and topped with dark chocolate flakes. The silence at our table said it all! Truthfully, there is so much more I could say about this exceptional eatery, such as that this is mostly just the soft-opening menu! There will soon be traditional Greek plate throwing and dancing. There’s a gorgeous terrace which will be open when the weather cools a bit… and so on. But to learn more, you’re really going to have to get in line for a table. I promise you won’t regret it! ✤ 54

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

W

ith its multiple award-winning outlets, an invitation to eat at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa is always welcome and our lunchtime sojourn at the recently reopened Royal Thai restaurant did not disappoint. We were greeted like old friends by Chef Wasanee, who said she would be sending us a selection of dishes, including some alltime favourites. The very mention of Chicken Green Curry had our mouths watering before we even reached our seats. We couldn’t agree on the soup, so chose both Tom Yum and Chicken Coconut. The Tom Yum – or hot and sour – provided the expected explosion of flavour and spice with the warmly welcome heat of chillis blending into the sour aftertaste. In contrast, the chicken coconut offered comfort in the cooling broth with the gentle kick of lemongrass and ginger to complement the coconut’s smoothness. We were definitely off to a good start. The Royal Platter is certainly aimed at royals with very hearty appetites. Arabian prawns appeared as if coated in vermicelli but with a much more subtle flavour; chicken satay and Angus beef skewers were delightfully tender and perfectly offset by the peanut and tamarind dipping sauces; and the stuffed crab was the star of this plate. A noodle-crumbed crunchy coating yielding to reveal a generous serving of salty-sweet crab meat, its firm texture retained for a satisfying bite. You would go a long way to find servings so generous and all of such high quality. The accompanying Papaya Salad provided a refreshing side to the meats and seafood and, unlike some, was not overly spiced so as not to overpower the delicate flavour of the fruit. Next came fishcakes and we all dived for them in anticipation. This particular Thai treat is eternally popular and with good reason. In Thailand they are eaten as both spicily delicious street food and in a slightly more refined, less heated version at finedining venues. We got the best of both; biting into high-quality, firmly fleshed fish with a satisfying spicy zing perfectly balanced by the sweet chilli dipping sauce. Pineapple Rice and Phad Thai came next. Yes, we know Phad Thai has a reputation for being on the somewhat sinful side of Thai cuisine, as it’s high in both calories and fats. But, it’s also high in flavour and deserving of its popularity. The one served at Royal Thai shows why. Stir-fried rice noodles luxuriate in a sauce in which you can just pick out the subtle nuances of tamarind, shrimp and garlic paired with the sweetness of palm sugar. The noodles themselves were the perfect texture, not sticky at all, and the chunky shrimps and tofu made for a very satisfying dish. The Pineapple Rice, though, was a show stopper. Served in a scooped out half pineapple, the presentation is more than Instaworthy and the dish itself is a perfect blend of sweet, slightly sticky rice, its flavour enhanced by the juices of the lightly seared fruit, married with savoury cashew nuts, plump silky prawns, caramelised onions and a delicate blend of spices to render the dish not just beautiful but also satisfyingly flavourful. The Gaeng Kiew Wan Kai, green chicken curry, demanded silence and concentration to fully appreciate the delicate blend of flavours. And, oh was it worth it! The secret to the creaminess of the sauce comes from the use of full-fat coconut milk, none of your low fat here please. This combined with the elements of the fact magazine

superb homemade green curry paste, such as galangal, shallots, garlic and kaffir lime, made for a supreme taste experience. The first sensation was gentle heat coupled with smooth creaminess, the herbs and spices building to a crescendo of flavour on the tongue and leaving a distinct aftertaste of warm, savoury sweetness. The chicken was melt-in-the-mouth tender and the thick, sweet slices of young coconut heart had absorbed all the flavours of the broth without losing their firmness. Yes, it’s safe to say, we are fans! We finished our meal with the obligatory Khao Neow Mamuang, Thai mango with sticky rice and coconut cream. Here, I must mention that Royal Thai’s idea to use Lazy Susan-style rotating table tops is inspired. It allows you to scoot your favourite dishes along to make sure your dining companions don’t eat them all, and it came in very handy during the dessert serving with each of us spinning the table to grab repeat tastings of the deliciously, glutinous and sweet sticky rice coupled with perfectly ripe juicy mango fruit and cool, sweet, smooth coconut cream. It was the perfect end to an outstanding meal and we would highly recommend, especially now that it’s possible, once again, to eat in Royal Thai’s regal surroundings. We later discovered that Royal Thai has been awarded the Seal of Approval for Thai Cuisine by Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce – an even better reason to check out what’s on offer. ✤

A charming marriage of classic and modern with black and white tile, rustic metal chandeliers lit with candlelike light bulbs, and a wall seeded with brilliant artwork at the centre of which is, of course, the portrait of famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Before we even step foot inside, the cheerful music is already flirting with my ears. I love the atmosphere here; it is addictive. The energetic restaurant manager welcomes us and escorts us to our table. The glass panels on two sides tempt you to step out to the beautiful terrace surrounded by water ponds and lush green. If only I could stand August’s heat! A glass of water followed by a strawberry mojito and a frozen mango margarita are the perfect beginning to any meal. We start with a Mexican menu staple, creamy guacamole – the texture and flavour perfect with just the right amount of heat – served with tortilla chips. Ceviche is a must as well! My partner is already in love with Aguachile De Pulpo, or octopus ceviche, and I have to agree! It is so tender and super tasty with a hint of chilli and smoky cumin; a dish worth trying for sure. If you’re not so confident about the octopus, try the tuna or shrimp versions, they’re equally delicious. Meanwhile, the Mariachi band makes cheerful entertainment. I keep dancing in my chair. If you have a request, don’t hesitate to ask, they will happily meet your wishes. Next, the two main courses are brilliant for sharing as they come in three slider-size portions. BIG SCREEN Rick and Morty Need to Know:

Rick and Morty is a science-fiction animated comedy, with the fifth season being recently released. We follow the adventures of Morty and his genius, sociopathic grandpa, Rick, as they navigate dangerous and hilarious experiences across the universe as well as boring and complicated family relations.

Creators: Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon Cast: Justin Roiland, Spencer Grammer, Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Rick and Morty must be one of the funniest shows currently being produced. It is unique and stands out against many other washed-up comedies with its dark and immature humour. In season five, we are introduced to a changing relationship between the main characters. As each member of the Smith family grows, Summer (Spencer Grammer) takes on a more significant role. While the main protagonists, Rick and Morty (both voiced by Justin Roiland), drift apart. Some of the episodes follow the classic structure of season one, where each has its own adventure. However, the whole season is about evolving the overarching plot. This is a great way to structure the season as it gives the audience the excitement of a connected story, but it also isn't overwhelming. The animation fits the show with bright colours, eye-catching scenes and a fascinating amount of creativity. The voice acting is also perfect. Roiland does a great job voicing both Rick and Morty; each voice is unique and matches the characters' personalities, with Rick's voice constantly laced with cynicism and Morty’s with youth and naivety. This is such a culturally significant show, and it is most definitely worth your time.

Run Need to Know:

Run is a psychological horror filled with suspense and mystery. Starring Sarah Paulson, it has all the intensity she carries into movies. In this 2020 film, we follow 18-year-old Chloe Sherman, who has big dreams of college and leaving her overprotective mother. However, she comes to discover some big things her mother has been keeping from her.

Director: Aneesh Chaganty Cast: Sarah Paulson, Kiera Allen

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This is a very refreshing horror movie as it finds a way to frighten you without any jump scares or graphic scenes. It can simply scare you because of how disturbing this story is, as it deals with a familiar and essential topic ─ family relations. The movie establishes a comforting scenario at the beginning to give the audience a false sense of security, only to completely destroy that. With exciting filmography that can make characters truly scary without them even saying anything, the lighting is also expertly used to foreshadow events as they unfold. There aren't that many actors in the film, with Chloe Sherman (Kiera Allen) and Diane Sherman (Sarah Paulson) taking up most of the screen time. This gives the audience the sense that the characters are isolated, making the psychological horror absolutely terrifying as you watch this disturbing story full of thrilling twists.

Durand Jones & the Indications’ first two albums were retro soul and it was the second release, American Love Call, that gained them international acclaim. In their new album Private Space, they own the moment of throwback funk and soul, partially derived from the disco era. The album features tracks about lockdown, separation, the hand of friendship, yearning for post-Covid togetherness and better, happier times. The up-tempo songs jolt the listener to a sense of euphoria. There’re bubbling synths, a stroke of sparkly disco, a smattering of classic hip-hop and a dash of modern pop. It all fuses with songwriting that has an imaginative edge over the Indications' more thoughtful previous albums. The band voice how they got caught up in the pandemic like everyone else and how they relied on the power of music to get through the worst of times. The music is infectious and happy.

stereotypical sense of fame and fortune, the speed at which Billie Eilish went from a cult star to defining pop music for Generation Z. In her sophomore album, Happier Than Ever, Billie Eilish shines a spotlight on her rapid rise to stardom and all its accompanying horrors. She spells out the differences in her life in detail — full of admissions, plainly sung with very little left between the lines. She puts emphasis on the anxiety of how people perceive you, a desire to leave your present life behind and the fear that nothing will ever be the same and normal again. In one of the tracks Not My Responsibility she even calls out the social media commentators and paparazzi who objectify her. There’s a lot more jazz and a some much quieter tracks midway through the album. She remains at her best when at her most minimalistic, and that can be over anything from Latin-inflected guitar to heavy atmospheric synth.

A self-depicting and honest memoir by Michelle Zauner, indie rockstar of Japanese Breakfast fame and author of the viral 2018 New York essay of the same title, takes readers on a beautiful journey of family, food, love, remorse, pain and strength. With humour and intimate anecdotes, Michelle Zauner proves herself more than just a shining singer as she pens about growing up Korean American, losing her mother, and forging and finding her own identity. The memoir is vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest and that’s what sets it apart from so many other grief memoirs.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The Case For Love By A K Benjamin

In his autobiography, clinical neuropsychologist A K Benjamin (a pseudonym) takes us on a reflective questioning journey into the meaning of healing and recovery. It explores a career treating patients with brain trauma — people whose thoughts and feelings are largely unknowable — and is a reconstruction of several real-time cases experienced by the author himself. The Case For Love is, in a way, an extension to his previously published Let Me Not Be Mad, based on the author’s own experience of dealing with patients with severe brain impairments and on his own struggle to find meaning and purpose as a recovering drug addict. fact magazine

HISTORY For more than 90 years, since its launch in 1927 as one of the first Ritz-Carlton hotels in the USA, The Newbury has always been more than just a luxury hotel and a beloved landmark in the city. Rather it has given visitors a place to call home, and somewhere to make unforgettable memories. The Newbury, located in the premier shopping and dining neighbourhood of Back Bay, has served as a cherished and iconic destination, welcoming Boston residents, world leaders, dignitaries and celebrities alike. It’s no wonder that many guests return over and over to experience its timeless charm.

NEW STYLE Leveraging the talent of three world-renowned designers, the building has been thoughtfully transformed to offer 286 guestrooms and suites with 16,000sq/ft of spectacular event spaces, signature dining experiences and a reimagined entrance. The extensive restoration and revitalisation of the hotel pays homage to its rich history, while also incorporating modern luxury and carefully curated guest experiences. The main entrance was relocated from Arlington Street to Newbury Street and visitors are welcomed into an elegant, landscaped terrace plaza, which pays a visual nod to The Public Garden that lies adjacent. Dramatic window awnings and a new lighting design enhance the hotel’s neoclassical façade. In creating the new entrance and public spaces, internationally recognised architect Jeffrey Beers sought to invoke the spirit of the building’s heritage by incorporating many historic details, including the original cobalt blue chandeliers from the main dining room. 78

T

he Berluti Winter 21 collection adapts the works of the painter Lev Khesin. The Berlin-based Russian contemporary artist expresses himself in abstract, tactile patterns created through multiple layers and colours of silicone paint. His practice echoes that of Berluti’s artisanal patina methods, drawing a natural connection between both the visual and practical domains of Lev Khesin and Berluti. The artist’s work inspired the motifs, colours and textures which are interpreted in garments and accessories, to create the foundation for a collection embodied by fluidity, adaptability, and the human hand. Subtly unstructured lines cut a soft and relaxed tailoring silhouette. It’s a feeling of comfort expressed in neo-suiting, fusing traditional formal dress codes with those of workwear and sportswear wardrobes, often carried out in double-face cashmere. Suits executed in block colours pick up from the palette of the artist and are deconstructed in styling, their components mixed up for a multi-colour tailoring expression. Leather jackets, dyed and faded by hand, echo shoes in Berluti’s classic patina. And, intensifying the artisanal value, point norvégien is applied to outerwear and suiting. A white stitch embroidery traditionally employed in shoe-making – and which can only be achieved by hand – translates into the piping of quilted leather jackets, the trims of a leather suit, and other items. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About Just A Dog

A Mother’s Love

The Prodigal Returns

Since the fall of Afghanistan, there has been a furore over efforts to get the founder of Nowzad animal rescue, Pen Farthing, out of the country, along with his furry charges. Several people have asked why animals should be prioritised over the humans who did not make it onto the last repatriation flights. Nowzad was founded in 2006 when, as a serving British Royal Marine, Pen and his unit were befriended by a stray dog. Since then, it has reunited more than 1,600 servicemen and women with the rescued animals who have made life in the war-torn country that little bit better. In reply to concerns, we share an

Details have recently emerged of a woman taking on a mountain lion with her bare hands after it attacked her five-yearold son. The child was reportedly playing outside his home in Calabasas in the Santa Monica mountains when the animal struck, dragging him across the front lawn. Just in time, mum spotted what was going on and ran outside and hit the animal until it let go. When emergency services arrived, the big cat was found crouched and hissing in a nearby bush and was shot dead (RIP). From the woman who bashed a bear to keep it from making off with her dog, to animal mums taking on predators

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you cannot have missed the news that footballing great Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Manchester United, the club he first signed with 18 years ago. He played with the Red Devils for six years, scoring 118 goals, before transferring to Real Madrid in 2009, but has always had a special place in the heart of United fans and, indeed, with the club itself. Fast forward to the present day, with multiple awards along the way, and he is widely regarded as one of the best football players of all time. However, at 36 years old, some say the best days of his playing career are behind him. But this is a man who is a

much larger than themselves to defend their young, tales of parental courage frequently make the headlines. But going after a mountain lion with your bare hands seems like another level of bravery to us. We hope the little boy is fine and will one day learn just how lucky he is. And we bet his teen incarnation never gets away with backtalking the woman who saved his life in such a dramatic way. Can you imagine that conversation?

fitness demon – he has previously called out other players for unhealthy lifestyles and failing to train hard enough. And earlier this year he famously, and very publicly, got rid of bottles of Coca Cola placed in front of him at a press conference for the UEAF Euro 2020 tournament in favour of water. Returning to the Premier League – widely recognised as the best in the world – at this age certainly demonstrates a level of courage that some would say was lacking in another very high-profile transfer this summer. Whatever your view there’s no doubt that a certain Manchester United mega-fan in the FACT office is a very happy man.

excerpt from a social media post by another Royal Marine, who points out that Pen and his animals were on a specially chartered flight, not paid for by the British Government. He explains: “These are not ‘just’ animals. These were comrades, comforters, companions to us. They provided lights in the darkness of an ongoing battle and a sense of home away from home. They provided grounding and purpose away from the chaos of battle and, might I say, someone to care for and love so far away from our loved ones. They put smiles on solemn faces, lifted morale when the well was dry.” 88

ISLAND INSIDER

Rudolph Karam Director of Sales and Marketing, Royal Saray Resort managed by Accor You’ve had a long career in sales and marketing across many illustrious brands. What first inspired you to enter this side of the hospitality business? You may have heard this from a lot of people, but ‘people’ is the driving force behind my passion for hotels. I've always been captivated by diverse cultures, and my curiosity has led me to interact with people from various countries. That component of my hobby could only be found in the travel industry, specifically in hotels. When you work at a hotel, you feel as if you are working in a small world surrounded by people from across the globe. The ‘people’ component was my number one trigger, whether I was interacting with a colleague or greeting a visitor.

How will your approach differ at Royal Saray, particularly considering its recent rebranding? I was ecstatic to receive the position at Royal Saray. The resort offers a strong foundation on the island, and contributes as a vital part in the hospitality luxury league. I'm humble, but I'm looking forward to building the foundation. Adding to that, Accor is the world's largest hotel company, and we currently have seven properties in Bahrain, with more in the works to launch soon. This keeps the spark in your heart alive. I am excited to maintain Royal Saray Resort’s luxury status, which is handled by Accor, and to expand its legacy locally and regionally through outstanding business connections.

How long have you been in Bahrain and are you enjoying the Kingdom so far, what do you like to do here? It's been only two months, and I'm already in love with it. Before my arrival I was informed that Bahrain is not only a beautiful island to live, but that the Bahrainis, in particular, are well known for being the friendliest and most helpful nation. I was enthralled not only by what the location has to offer in terms of scenic beaches, culinary experiences, retail shopping diversity and a liberal attitude. Also, how they all came together and handled the Covid-19 crisis, Bahrain was lauded worldwide for its outstanding efforts in handling the pandemic. It comes to me as no surprise that, according to the most recent InterNations Expat poll, Bahrain is the most wonderful country in the Gulf for expats to live and work. Despite the Kingdom's small size, there is still a lot to find here, and I am on the lookout for it.
