NEW IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Fuddruckers has opened its ninth outlet at Amwaj Drive, which will also be the restaurant chain’s new flagship store.

Almost a year after remodelling the Sanad branch, its first in Bahrain, Fuddruckers is celebrating another feather in the cap. In a grand ceremony, the ‘Home of the World's Greatest Hamburgers’ inaugurated its ninth branch in the Kingdom, at Amwaj Drive in Muharraq, which is also Fudds’ new flagship store. During the opening, they hosted an event for the Royal Charity Organization, supporting widows and orphans, in collaboration with Alaa Yousif Khalifa Budalama, Head of Programmes and Activities and Abdulrahman Alnaham, Senior Educational Specialist at the Royal Humanitarian Foundation. The new restaurant has been designed to bring the outdoors in by integrating greenery, which creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. This branch covers a dining area of 390sq/m and boasts a modern and sleek interior, complete with a spacious al fresco space; the patio has a fresh, cosy ambience, perfect for

outdoor seating in the cooler months. Fudds’ commitment to offering a family-friendly vibe continues and guests can enjoy a dedicated gaming zone that supports e-sports development in the Kingdom.

Mateo Ramos, CEO of Foodvest Holding, the holding company of Fuddruckers, expressed his enthusiasm for the new branch, saying: "Our new location at Amwaj Drive in Bahrain is going to be a great addition to the Fuddruckers family. Foodvest is committed to modernising our restaurants and providing our guests with an exceptional dining experience by creating inviting interiors and a warm atmosphere. This new branch, with its fresh and modern design, is a reflection of that dedication." ✤

This month, watch your favourite childhood fairytales and other classics come to life in the form of graceful ballets.

The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, in collaboration with Common Ground International, will present iconic stories as ballet performances. The shows will take place at Exhibition World Bahrain, the Kingdom’s state-of-the-art venue in Sakhir.

The Mowgli ballet will be brought to life on May 5 at 2pm. The beloved main character in The Jungle Book, Mowgli is abandoned as a baby in the forest. Combining classical choreography with vivid characters, this colourful performance brings out the emotions and deeper meanings in a familiar story.

Also showing on May 5 at 8pm will be The Nutcracker ballet. With enchanting music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, this

delightful rendition of a holiday tale will transport you to the foot of a Christmas tree.

Watch the magic unfold with the Cinderella ballet, which will be showcased on May 6 at 1pm. Composed by Sergei Prokofiev, it will be a delightful extravaganza of lyrical waltzes and spectacular numbers. Get ready to be transported to the world of fantasy – fairy godmothers, pumpkin chariots, talking animals, prince charming…

PEALS OF LAUGHTER

Get ready for a night of rib-tickling comedy, drinks and fun at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa.

Bahrain continues to play host to some of the best talents in the stand-up business, with this next set of artists. Hollywood PopUp Comedy Club is bringing Tacarra Williams and Rafi Bastos to the island this month. As part of their Middle East tour, the duo will perform their individual acts at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa on May 5 and 19 respectively, at 8pm on both days – doors open at 7.30pm.

In what will be her second show in the Kingdom, Tacarra Williams, also known in the comedy industry as ‘The Beautiful Beast’, draws her inspiration from her hard-won wisdom learned on the streets of New York, her experience as a young mother and, most recently, her endeavour as a coach to teach life skills to inmates. Her 30-minute routine, specially produced by Kevin Hart, has been featured on Comedy Central. In the past, she has opened for the likes of Tony Rock, Deray Davis and Bill Bellamy. She has also been featured on NBC’s Bring the Funny and hit every major stage in New York and Hollywood.

Rafi Bastos is a six-foot-seven-inch Brazilian comedian with an accent like Dracula – feeling the tickle yet? A performer at the prestigious Comedy Cellar and other popular clubs, he was dubbed the Most Influential Man on Twitter by a reputed New York publication in 2011. In 2013, Rafi won the Shorty Awards – the ‘Oscars of Social Media’ – for Best Comedian. Exhibiting quick-witted, observational humour, intelligence and a worldly view, he is an online sensation with his videos garnering 370 million views on his YouTube channel alone. WEDNESDAY ROAST AT BAHARAT

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

Bahrain Rugby Football Club’s first team clinched the West Asia Premiership title 2023 in a nail-biting match against the Dubai Tigers.

This is no mere victory for Bahrain who took the title for a third time when they beat their Dubai rivals. The finals took place at the Bahrain ground in Saar in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The home team saw things to the very end, clinching a 23-17 victory despite their worthy opponents putting up a good fight especially in the second half of the match.

The venue transformed into a hub of happiness, with supporters including young fans cheering, reaching out to their favourite players, hugging them, asking for autographs and clicking photos together to capture the historic moment. The BRFC Chairman, Mike Cunningham said the match had showcased the very best of the game in the region, and that despite it being a rollercoaster ride, they always had faith in the team. It was a proud moment for all to see the supporters and their unending backing of the ‘boys’

playing for Bahrain.

The home side exhibited sportsmanship as they congratulated their opponents and shared hugs. Bahrain Captain Jordan Viggers lifted the trophy and the team collected their medals amid a shower of cheers and confetti. What made the victory even greater was that Dubai Tigers are a strong team. In fact, Bahrain lost to them in their last game of the regular season. The finals marked the fourth time they were pitted against them, and a high intensity game from the start saw them through. ✤

Now, this isn’t really a secret place. However, most of us see it as part of an official district. While the Harbour Gate towers do home many offices, the concourse on the second floor and other parts of the structure are also a venue for some of the island’s most interesting art displays. An events management agency, Vibes was founded in 2015 by Ahmed Al Rayash. He says: “We started with events and wanted a more artist-centric approach to management. We realised that many artists struggle to find the support they need to build successful careers and we wanted to change that.” With a diverse background in music, including touring, promotion and A&R (Artists and Repertoire – finding new and promising artists), they knew they could help emerging artists navigate the complex and ever-changing music industry landscape. Vibes has worked with a wide range of talents in different genres and stages of their careers – singer May Al Qasim, percussion artist Conguero El Fayadh, violinist Dania, DJ Nagoo and more. Since its inception in 1998, Al Riwaq has been a muchrevered name in Bahrain’s art community. In a way, it played an important role in defining street art on the island. Sadly, it shut down in 2018. But fate had other plans – the gallery reopened in 2022 and is now located at the Bank House in Gufool. As part of its renewed focus, Al Riwaq has been prioritising and investing in the education of artists and development of artists’ portfolios. It is also involved in art production and presentation through performances, talks, film screenings, exhibitions, discussions or majlis and more. All of these initiatives are designed to enhance the creative experience. Watch out for their upcoming events @alriwaq on Instagram.

Bahrain Stargazers was founded by Myriam Al Qassab who says: “After I got pregnant with my daughter, I decided to quit my job and focus on raising my child. But I quickly realised that I'm a working person and staying at home is not for me, so I decided to do something I've loved since I was 16.” Myriam fell in love with astronomy after watching a documentary about Galileo. She adds: “The location [Bahrain] is good but light pollution is a significant issue. Finding dark places is very difficult due to the number of sodium lights all over the main island and the poor lighting designs on buildings such as the facade lights and others. However, Hawar Island is one of the best places for stargazing; a person can appreciate the stars and see the Milky Way in clear weather.” Bahrain Stargazers organised a camping

If you’re a bird-lover, this should be fun! Bahrain Falconry School conducts sessions where you can interact with these majestic feathered creatures. Learn the basics of falconry such as bird management, flying and operating equipment, and get a hands-on experience during field sessions, which resume in September and are held four to five times a week, depending on the birds, weather conditions and sunset timings; the fee is BD30 per person per month for all above 12 years and BD15 for those below 12. The hunting season, when the falcons hunt for migrating wild game, happens only in late December, January and February. Right now, it’s moulting season when falcons go into moulting chambers for their seasonal shedding of feathers. We suggest you find out what’s happening first by contacting Bahrain Falconry School on Facebook. Remember, this is not just a sport, it’s an activity where you’re dealing with wildlife so, in order to be certified, you must exhibit a serious commitment and complete two to three sessions of lessons.

BEACHES

While there are well-known beaches in Bahrain, which are part of hotel properties, there are some others that only a few know about, making them the ideal spot with smaller crowds. If you drive north to Karzakan village, you will find a forest and a beach. The forest has, in recent times, become an Instagrammable location with people organising private photoshoots. A canopy of trees offers a natural aesthetic. Following the forest path will lead you to the beach, which also offers space for children to play. Al Jazayer beach on the south-western coast is more popular. However, not many know that it’s the former Zallaq beach, a beloved picnic spot especially for families with children who grew up in Bahrain in the ‘90s. That being said, it looks nothing like it did back then. Stretching for 3km, it has been completely revamped. You can unwind on a sun lounger, splash around in the sea or grab a bite at the food trucks. Karbabad beach is another place to explore. Located in the north, close to Bahrain Fort, it’s said to be a favourite with runners, and is usually quiet on weekday mornings. The beach offers stunning views of the fort and the sunsets here are said to be mesmerising. In the evenings, however, it can get crowded with families who come here to enjoy the many activities, from a mini kart track to small. joy rides and food trucks offering traditional and other fare.

THE SOCIAL ANIMAL

The Social Animal is a platform for re-imagined experiences that spark conversation, creativity and the joy of human connection. Despite spending many years closely associated with the local scene, Founders Sumit and Ankita felt there weren’t sufficient events that were truly engaging and inspiring. They say: “This reduced even further due to the pandemic. So, as we emerged from the lockdowns and social distancing rules, there was an opportunity to create something different.” As new parents, they wanted to organise interesting experiences, which weren’t limited to bars or similar venues, and, at the same time, weren’t your typical family-friendly events. Their initiatives include Firefly, which featured local music acts, performing arts and interactive sessions, and Holicorn, a social event combining musical talent and the Indian festival of colours, Holi. They say: “It was so beautiful to see native Bahrainis, expats, tourists, people of all ages, come together and add their energies to these events. Also, from a distance, the industry may seem saturated, but there's still room for more. And if the offering is truly unique, you receive overwhelming love and support.”

FARMS

Bahrain is home to many farms, which offer an insight into how your food is grown. A learning opportunity and fun experience for people of all ages. Peninsula Farms in Sakhir is one such. Walk around the hydroponic production areas, interact with cute goats, or make a pitstop at the café, which serves delicious food cooked using organic ingredients. You can also buy goat milkbased skincare products such as soap bars with papaya and aloe vera extracts, said to have soothing properties. Learn more @peninsulafarms_bh on Instagram. Other farms that you can visit include Roots & Shoots in Hamala, which organises cooking classes. You can learn more about it @rootsandshoots.me on Instagram. Jasra Organic Farm has a wide range of workshops and activities for kids and adults, which you can learn more about @jasraorganicfarm on Instagram.

THE CULT BAHRAIN

A growing community of artists and art enthusiasts, The Cult Bahrain was co-founded by Saud Aldoseri. It promotes talents across art forms, offering them a platform to showcase their work through events such as pop-up markets, community workshops and art exhibitions, and digitally through their YouTube channel @TheCultBahrain and podcast. Saud says: “The Cult was always an idea in my mind that finally came to life in 2019. I have always wanted to create a safe space that is supportive and encouraging of talents and local businesses.” The concept became a reality thanks to an entrepreneurship programme by Tamkeen. The Cult shifted to the virtual realm during COVID but intends to make a comeback this summer with a series of exciting physical events that you can learn more about @thecult.bh on Instagram. Their page features artistic tips and thought-provoking posts alongside quirky artwork. They also intend to take their podcasts to the next level by hosting the sessions in a studio where guests from all over the island can attend.

THE EPITOME OF LUXURY

FACT spent the day in the new Bentley Bentayga Azure, a luxury vehicle that stands head and shoulders above most would-be premium SUVs.

This month, thanks to Behbehani Brothers and Bentley Bahrain, FACT got to experience the epitome of automobile luxury when given the opportunity to test drive the new generation Bentley Bentayga. First unveiled in 2015, the Bentayga firmly established a sterling reputation thanks to its attractive design, impressive on-road performance, genuine off-road capabilities and bespoke specifications. The second generation Bentayga is propelling this reputation to new heights as Bentley launches its first extended wheelbase (EWB) edition.

Exterior

Fortunate enough to get our hands on the enhanced Azure trim, our model exhibited extra special touches, including body-coloured lower bumper grilles and side skirts, along with Azure badging. At the front end, the elegant Vertical Vane Grille design delivers a visually striking centrepiece, announcing the arrival of this modern SUV in a most memorable manner.

When taking in the SUV’s flanks, the extra 180mm wheelbase of the EWB edition, combined with the proud stance of the 2023 model, endows the new Bentayga with a powerful presence. This sturdy posture is underscored by the model-specific 22-inch 10-spoke wheels. The graceful yet commanding lines and curves of this luxury SUV flow effortlessly from bonnet to boot and combine with the slightly sloping roofline to form an aesthetically pleasing profile.

The new Bentayga’s shapely rear end combines oval LED taillights and a unique twin dual exhaust system with integrated lip and roof spoilers, ensuring the vehicle looks as good on departure as it does on arrival.

Interior

This luxury SUV has been designed with the rear occupants firmly in mind, which is no surprise considering Bentley’s proud history of producing chauffeur-driven vehicles.

The rear cabin of the Bentayga EWB couples world-class luxury with technical innovation, showcasing craftsmanship and levels of comfort other premium vehicles can only dream of.

In the new Bentayga, Bentley have achieved near perfection with what can only be called simplistic luxury. The brand have not attempted to overpack this SUV with countless quirky features and desperate cries for attention. Instead, they have concentrated on classy inclusions, high-quality materials and attentiveness to the finer details.

The 16-way power-adjustable seating of the new Bentayga provides ventilation, five individual massage programmes and a beautiful diamond-quilted design. The flawlessly symmetrical pattern of the seat back tops was achieved through digital craftsmanship and precision technology.

The extended wheelbase ensures all passengers have ample legroom, while the redesigned front centre console provides improved ergonomics and functionality for the rear passengers. The rear face of the console has been extended to improve interaction with the touchscreen remote and now houses a wireless charging cradle for smartphones.

Infotainment & Connectivity

The Bentayga’s infotainment system is accessed through a 10.9-inch display and features a small rotary knob for additional control. This intuitive setup is compatible with Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto (cable). Paired with a fully digital instrument cluster, the high-quality screen displays a traditional speedometer and tachometer, along with a detailed map and night vision camera.

The top-of-the-line Naim audio system proved to be one of our favourite internal features of the new Bentayga. Equipped as standard in our Azure model, the sound quality was amongst the clearest and fullest we’ve ever experienced.

Safety & Assistance

As one would expect from a Bentley, the Bentayga has been equipped with a full suite of advanced safety and driver assistance features. These include, but are not limited to, crash mitigation and detection systems, ABS brakes, traction and stability control and a rear-view camera.

The Touring specification includes a head-up display, lane-keep assist, traffic assist, lane departure warning and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Dual front and rear side curtains, along with front and rear thorax bags, have also been equipped as standard on all Azure models.

Power & Performance

The most memorable moment of our Bentayga experience was the firing up of the engine. The Bentayga EWB is powered by Bentley’s 4.0-litre, 32-valve, dual twin-scroll turbocharged V8 petrol engine. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, this SUV delivers a supercar performance in Sport Mode, producing 542bhp and 568lb.ft of torque. This potent powertrain enables the car to surge from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds and to achieve a top speed of 290km/h.

A NEW PARADIGM

There couldn’t have been a better time to present the all-new Revuelto, Lamborghini’s first super sports V12 hybrid plug-in HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle) – in the marque’s 60th anniversary year. Defining a new paradigm, it features an unprecedented new architecture, innovative design, maximumefficiency aerodynamics and more.

The extensive use of carbon fibre and lightweight materials – a new aeronautics-inspired chassis, the ‘monofuselage’ – combined with the potent engine power, delivers acceleration from 0-100km/h in only 2.5 seconds and a top speed of more than 350km/h. Thanks to the introduction of electric torque vectoring and four-wheel drive available also in fully-electric drive mode, the super sports car expresses its amplified qualities both on track and in daily driving.

The Revuelto exhibits a design inspired by aerospace elements, such as the side fins, located behind the front wheel arches, that channel the airflow along the flanks. And the pronounced concavities of the doors, to the side air intakes. The roof combines more headroom with aesthetic qualities and specific aerodynamic functions. An immersive, shared driving experience awaits where pilot and co-pilot can simultaneously view the same information on the displays. The new swipe function facilitates moving applications and information from the central display to those on the side; all three digital screens implement new features that allow the driver to fully concentrate, just as in a race car. Four hundred bodywork colours are offered together with many

more customisation options, allowing the creation of an entirely individual super sports car. Go for a balanced mix of leather and Corsa-Tex, or one material, with 70 colour options.

The new L545 engine has a capacity of 6.5 litres and is the lightest and most powerful 12-cylinder ever made by Lamborghini. Complemented by three electric motors, it’s powered by a lithiumion battery. The motors boost performance at low revs but can also turn the Revuelto into a purely electric car. The superquadro V12 puts out 813hp at 9,250 revs per minute while maximum torque is 725Nm at 6,750rpm. Particular attention has been lavished on the ‘soundtrack’: melodious at low revs and then rising to a natural harmonious crescendo.

The navigation system is entirely redesigned and developed, with maps downloaded in real-time, information on weather and other points of interest including parking spaces and charging point availability. Further, the Revuelto is connected to a growing number of extra applications for a more personalised experience Offering maximum security, Revuelto sees Lamborghini implementing a complete Advanced Driver Assistance System for the first time, which includes advanced functions. The package comprises active lane departure warning, lane change warning and adaptive cruise control; rear cross-traffic alert facilitates easy maneuvering. ✤

In Conversation with… Jason Rodgers

A wonderful journey with the Four Seasons brand, his plans for the Bahrain property and his ideal vacation are some of the things Jason Rodgers, the new General Manager at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, shares.

fact magazine 62 • 5 OVER 5

You started your career in 1998 with the Four Seasons brand and have worked with them for all these years. In a way, you’ve grown with the brand. What about its culture and ethos has kept you connected to it?

At Four Seasons, we put our people at the centre of everything we do and this has not changed or waivered over the past 60 years. We try to create the same wonderful experiences for our staff behind the scenes that we do for our guests each and every day. Attitude is the key ingredient for a successful Four Seasons employee and we want them to bring their own culture and uniqueness to our guest experience and not be robots.

It’s only been a few months since you stepped into your role as the General Manager? You must have a vision for the property. Tell us about it and how do you intend to realise it?

As a brand, we are about quality, intuitive service and creating lasting memories for our guests, all curated by an inspired and dedicated team made up of more than 40 nationalities, and this will not change. We work with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, and the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority to continue to promote our destination to the world, find new markets to visit Bahrain and increase the market diversity. We also continue to add product enhancements at our hotel. Our upcoming project, 180 at the Beach, will provide our guests with year-round Arabic cuisine. And, we keep investing in service excellence to offer our guests a more memorable experience with us every time.

Do you have a routine when it comes to day-to-day operations at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay?

The thing I love about my job is that every day is different and

you need to be flexible and adaptable to change due to the lastminute nature of the hotel business. The best part about my day is being on the floor, meeting with the team members all over the hotel and interacting with our guests from breakfast time through to dinner time. The hours can be long and unsocial sometimes but are truly rewarding when you receive great feedback from guests about their experience and the positive comments about the wonderful team we have.

As a tourism professional, how would your ideal vacation be and where would you spend it?

My ideal vacation would be spent with the family and enjoying the outdoors, which has to include playing golf for me and my two boys, experiencing the culture of the destination and, most importantly, enjoying the food! We always like to travel to new places, enjoy new experiences and try as much of the local food as possible.

Hospitality can be a demanding field especially with the long hours. How do you balance this with quality time for family and yourself?

It is hard sometimes as this is a 24-hours-a-day, seven-daysa-week, 365-days-a-year business, which never closes or stops and neither does my phone! I am blessed to have a very supportive wife and kids who have explored the world with me during the course of my Four Seasons career, which started when I left Australia 25 years ago. The key is to make time for important events and make the most of the times you do have together as a family. I am also truly lucky to have such a wonderful and supportive team that I work with on a daily basis and I know the hotel is in great hands even when I am not here. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Areej Masri

Marketing Manager, Porsche Centre Bahrain, Behbehani Brothers W.L.L.

As the Marketing Manager of Porsche Centre Bahrain, how would you define the Porsche experience?

I would define it as a combination of exceptional engineering, outstanding performance, timeless design and a deep connection between the driver and car. Porsche vehicles are designed to deliver an unparalleled experience that is both exhilarating and refined. However, it's also about the feeling of being part of a community of passionate Porsche enthusiasts who share a love for driving and a commitment to excellence. It's about the excitement of pushing yourself and your ride to the limit and the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from owning and driving a Porsche, a brand that has a rich history of innovation and performance.

Ultimately, I would say the Porsche experience is about the joy of driving and

the feeling of being connected to a machine that is not just a car, but a work of art that is engineered to perform at the highest level.

Having worked in the field of events and conferences in the initial part of your career, you met people from diverse backgrounds. Were there any interesting acquaintances that stood out and why?

Yes, during my time working in events, I had the opportunity to meet many interesting people from diverse backgrounds. They shared their unique perspectives and insights on life based on their own experiences. I met prominent businesspeople, adventurers and talented artists and musicians, passionate about their craft and dedicated to their work. Overall, I found that each person I met had a unique story to tell and something valuable to share. These acquaintances broadened my

perspective and taught me the importance of being open to new ideas, which has been invaluable in my personal and professional life.

How does your day usually look at work and after that?

My workday typically includes a range of responsibilities, comprising of a mix of strategic planning, collaboration with the team along with external partners and the execution of marketing initiatives. Tasks such as developing and implementing marketing strategies and plans to increase brand awareness, generate leads and improve customer engagement, for example, are at the top of my list to ensure the Porsche brand is represented in the market successfully. After work, I usually like to spend time with family and friends, try out new restaurants and activities or unwind with Netflix, depending on the day.

AN EXPERIENCE TO SAVOUR

Olivier Catora, Executive Chef at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa, talks about his culinary process, interesting developments this year and more.

fact magazine 66
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

How do you marry your culinary aesthetic and style with the Jumeirah brand?

What we try to do at Jumeirah Bahrain is to create an experience; a food experience. Therefore, in the hotel we have dishes from diverse cuisines such as Italian and Levantine; we have one Indian chef de cuisine and one German chef de cuisine. We combine all the international offerings and specialities in Bahrain to make the difference. Jumeirah is a GCC brand so we need to, of course, make our offering in line with the Arabic culture. Therefore, we have an Arabic restaurant, in addition to our all-day dining which is fusion but the technique, the taste, of course, comes from local culture. An example is our ouzi, which is served in our Arabic restaurant. We combine the Italian osso buco meat [traditionally braised with vegetables in a broth] with the rice dish. The food, however, is only part of the whole experience of staying in Jumeirah Bahrain. We have this special resort, you have the sea, activities and entertainment, a cinema, which I think makes it unique.

As Executive Chef, how do you lead your team of chefs to project their vision onto the guest experience?

I am very clear about what I want for the culinary experience. But if I do only what I want, it will not work. So, I give more freedom to my staff. I need to accept the sensibility and techniques especially for international cuisines. I ask them to do what they know first and then we can go to the second step, where we work together, put our ideas on paper. Sometimes it works and sometimes not – in France, we have a saying that you can’t make an omelette without cracking the egg, which means you need to make a mistake to reach what you want. We want to do something different but edible and something our guests can understand. I also tell my staff to think like a child. Every day you discover something. Don’t be afraid, be curious. We are like

artists, we have the ingredients, we have techniques and we need to combine all of that to do something different but good. And now, we need to create emotion more and more – we need to call the five senses – it’s basic in a creative job as we eat with our eyes, with ears, with touch…

Tell us more about the new restaurants that will be opening at Jumeirah later this year. What type of cuisines and experiences can our readers expect?

We intend to launch a Peruvian concept by the end of this year. We have the kitchen; I have an idea what I want to do. I have drafted the menu and when the chef de cuisine joins, we will work closely with him. We are focused on the authenticity of the food. Authenticity comes by the chef when he puts his personality into the cooking. We need to find a way to preserve the taste with local ingredients or different ingredients. For instance, if we make bisque, traditionally it uses spirits. However, we can use cider vinegar which will not affect the taste. Right now, we are more focused with our other experiences. We have many live sessions during brunch and I push my staff to be open to possibilities; there are so many using just one ingredient. I tell them to ask guests their preference or to propose ideas to them.

How did you develop your signature dish, right from the inspiration to the choice of ingredients and flavours?

I made a dish of scallops with broccoli, cauliflower and beetroot mousse, something to reflect my personality. I like seafood, it has a lot of nutrients and good things for the body. It’s my speciality. Magret de Canard is another dish I prepare, which is very typical of my region [Bordeaux in France]. It’s duck breast, which is accompanied with a curry sauce and noodles [with Thai influences]. I may add this to the menu but not without giving it a local touch.

CULINARY ARTISTRY

Embarking on a gastronomic journey is always very exciting. Fernanda Langhammer experienced an exceptionally flavourful trip at My Cafe.

Many restaurants claim to be inspired by different cuisines, however, finding a place that mixes them with mastery is a rare gem, and My Cafe is undoubtedly one of them. We visited the Riffa branch (with a slightly different menu from the Adliya location), which opened about eight months ago, to explore the extensive menu orchestrated by Chef

Everything about this eatery exudes beauty and funkiness, from the carefully arranged outdoor seating area to the modern and tastefully decorated indoor dining space. As soon as you enter, a massive white giraffe greets you with a delicate crystal chandelier in its mouth – an artful piece that will put a smile on your face. We then took the elevator and went to the upstairs area. Right in front of us, a massive tree emerged and, on the left side, there was a semi-private area with a large table that looked like someone’s dining room. The wall had shelves with eye-catching art pieces and low chandeliers made with natural materials giving the ambience an intimate vibe. After exploring the space and soaking in its beautiful details, it was time to please our palates. The first item we tried was the Pizza al Tegamino, made with tomato sauce, cherry tomato confit, parmesan, basil, fried egg and beef bacon. In my opinion, pizza dough needs to have a crunch to it and hold the toppings well; this one didn’t disappoint – it was just perfect! You might find it uncommon to have a fried egg and beef bacon on top of a pizza, but this is where My Cafe stands out; everything is done to taste its best, and the recipes have an out-of-the-box approach.

If you are looking for dishes that will challenge your senses and

fact magazine 70 • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

play with your taste buds, visiting My Cafe will take you there. The menu is broad, and there is something to please literally everyone. But even simple dishes come with an out-of-theordinary element. The Crunchy Chicken Waffle, a staple breakfast in the United States, was a combination of pan-fried buttermilk chicken with maple butter and coriander sitting in one of the best waffles I have ever had in my life. The waffle was crispy on the outside and soft inside, with the right touch of sweetness. The Spinach Feteer had a light and flaky dough with the right ratio of spinach, cheese and olives. The Chicken Tikka Ravioli was probably the best example of fusion done right. The small pockets of fried ravioli dough were filled with well-seasoned chicken and curry sauce accompanied by mint yoghurt. The crunchy dumpling was an explosion of taste in our mouths and a gift to our taste buds.

Chef Konstantinos told us that they constantly add to and change the menu, but some dishes are untouchable, and the reason is not to upset regular customers – I love that! One of these dishes is the Date Salad made with rocket leaves, feta cheese, blanched almonds, caramelised dates and orange blossom vinaigrette. I believe it thrives for its beautiful balance of ingredients. It’s important to highlight that everything cooked in the My Cafe kitchen is homemade, from the pasta dough to the pastrami, using the freshest ingredients in the market. Chef Konstantinos is also very proud of what his culinary team can accomplish by upholding high standards and quality while offering such a varied menu.

The Saffron Arancini is an encounter between East and West. The rare Eastern spice gives another dimension to this simple dish, adding a subtle earthy-sweet profile with a tinge of bitterness on the tongue to the famous Italian fried delicacy made with creamy rice. The fried disk is placed on a bed of chicken carbonara sauce made with porcini mushroom, parmesan, gruyere and hazelnut balsamic dressing, decorated with petals of confit tomato. One bite is enough to linger on your palate for a while – a dish now engraved in my food memory.

I love pasta, and the Truffle Pappardelle was scrumptious. One of the secrets of this dish is that cheese and truffle extract are added to the dough, expanding its flavours when bathed in a sauce of mushroom ragout, truffle cream and pecorino and parmesan cheese. A synchronised dance happened in my mouth, and I felt that this comforting dish had just hugged me.

If you like seafood, you must try one of Chef Konstantinos’ signature dishes: Grilled Calamari. As you probably noticed, nothing at My Cafe is as simple as it sounds. All creations come with a certain level of complexity, whether in their execution or expertise in knowing which ingredients work well together. The calamari is sun-dried and then quickly grilled, then the mountain of thin rings sits on top of a pool of miso butter sauce, raisins, pickled fennel and crispy and puréed parsley. The combination of different textures and levels of sweetness and savoury elements gives the dish its brilliance.

For meat lovers, the Short Rib Orzo was cooked to perfection –falling from the bone and melting in the mouth, accompanied by tasty orzo, a short-cut pasta shaped like a large grain of rice. The meat is braised for eight hours and seasoned with thyme, chives and beef jus, reaffirming the commitment and excellence offered. The other meat dish we tried and were very impressed by was the Afghani Lamb (a family recipe full of childhood memories), a beautiful piece of meat on a large bed of rice pilaf with roasted nuts, crispy onion and caramelised carrots.

After a splendid spread of savoury morsels, we had to try some of the restaurant’s most-loved desserts. The Russian Honey Cake had the perfect ratio of sponge and filling with a very light aftertaste. The San Sebastian Cheesecake was creamy and crustless, with a beautifully caramelised top; the rustic flavour and texture were spot on! But my favourite sweet was the ‘My’ Sticky Toffee Pudding, maybe because I have a thing for pudding, but this one was just incredible. The gooey cake was topped with frosted pecan, caramelised pistachios and vanilla ice cream for the perfect mouthful to end this marvellous culinary experience. After this dining journey, I felt that there was a skilful team behind every single dish and that they deeply respected the ingredients they worked with – big applause to the whole team. No matter if you are looking for breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner, My Cafe has it all – and more, as it will expand your food knowledge and give you an unparalleled taste adventure. ✤

THE ART OF SPANISH SOCIALISING

Salero translates to shalt shaker, and true to its name, Melissa Nazareth discovered that this restaurant at The Westin City Centre Bahrain adds flavour to every dining experience.

DINING DELIGHT •

When it comes to Spanish culture, the first word that comes to mind, at least mine, is vibrant. From the colours and art to the food and overall upbeat vibe that comes from sharing tapas with friends or watching a Flamenco dancer. My companions and I visited Salero, an informal modern dining concept, where live entertainment and cooking take place in a social atmosphere. Located on the first floor of The Westin City Centre Bahrain, it’s a dimly-lit space with a dining area, a coffee station and a bar and live cooking counter. The life-sized murals depicting Spanish music, dance and food and drink are eye-catching. Cushions in reds and yellowish tones, much like the Spanish flag, add a nice touch. The show stealer for us was the wall painting of a bull, with details reminiscent of Barcelona’s mosaic art. It’s the perfect background for a photo – very Instagrammable. Mosaic-style bulls are table centrepieces too. We were told by our friendly server that they are on sale. You can also buy canned ingredients from Spain that are displayed at the entrance. Salero’s menu offers a good selection of hot and cold tapas to share at the table. We started with a caramelised goat cheese salad. The sugar lent this salty, mature variety the perfectly balanced sweetness – I’m never eating goat cheese any other way again. The pungent arugula and candied strawberries and blue berries elevated taste and texture dimensions. A moderately sharp fortified grape vinegar dressing, laced with the fruitiest olive oil, further magnified the flavour and freshness of this dish.

fact magazine 74 • DINING DELIGHT

Then, it was time for something hot and what better than croquettes. We ate the wild mushroom and truffle ones, which we were told are a best-seller. They had a crispy shell packed with an elegant minced filling of these terrestrial treasures. Truffle is a tricky ingredient; when used in the right amount, it offers a subtle je ne sais quoi quality, however, when overdone it can be off-putting. Salero strikes the correct balance of earthy, nutty and garlicky profiles.

Every culture has a side dish or appetiser-like item that is served, regardless of whether you order it or not. Here, it’s the Pan con Tomate, toasted Spanish bread, served with grated fresh tomato. It’s also on the menu in case you want to go for seconds – which we suspect you will; our host revealed that it’s outstandingly delicious when used to mop the luscious oil from our next dish – Gambas al Ajillo. Springy shrimp swimming in a pool of silken olive oil infused with garlic and chili flakes. The sweet, paprikadusted crustaceans were as much a treat to the eyes as they were to the taste buds. The freshly chopped parsley garnish added to the medley of colours.

You can’t finish a tapas experience without Patatas Bravas. This traditional dish of crispy-edged fried potatoes was addictive to say the least. Like the chorus that repeats throughout a song, these moreish delights kept featuring after every other bite. They were served with ali oli, which is a garlic sauce that tasted like garlic mayo, only better. And, of course, a side of coral-red bravas sauce made with smoked paprika as the main ingredient. The showstopper was the seafood paella, prepared right in front our eyes. Elegantly choreographed, this showmanship of flames shooting out of the pan and a rhythmic clanking of spoon to vessel had us rapt. The result – a pot of golden, short-grained Spanish rice crowned with oceanic treasures – mussels, shrimp, cuttle fish and clams. Each of these were fresh, teaming with umami flavours that were hard to resist. The rice had a bite, a testament to Salero’s traditional techniques, which reflected in virtually all our dishes. However, there was a modern touch too, making the experience relatable to diners of all cultural backgrounds.

A special mention to our cheerful server who got us an empty bowl to dispose of the shells – it’s the attention to the smallest detail that makes or breaks service and we can confidently say that Salero’s guest experience is spot on.

We finished with churros served with a silken, decadent dark chocolate dip. These golden-fried, cinnamon sugar-dusted treats were the perfect sweet note to end on. In the past, I’ve eaten churros that are doughy but these were airy and light, with the perfectly crispy exterior.

That we will keep returning to further explore this lovely rendition of Spanish culture is a no-brainer. Perhaps, even sample the selection of hand-picked grape from the bar. We also hope to catch a Flamenco performance the next time, which happens daily from 8pm to 10pm, except on Sundays when the restaurant is closed. Vamos!✤

A FEAST FIT FOR ROYALTY

From chef’s special dishes to classic favourites, Liz O’Reilly enjoyed a veritable carnival of flavours on a visit to Royal Thai restaurant.
FOODIE CORNER •

Walking in through The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa during the final days of the Eid holiday, the place felt welcoming and buzzing as we headed to the grand pagoda housing Royal Thai in the property’s gorgeous tropical gardens overlooking the bright blue waters of the pool and the pretty koi pond.

Inside we were greeted by Thai mask heads and soaring wooden ceilings with recessed lighting for an intimate atmosphere, even in this large space. Wall tapestries featuring Thai figures in dance poses added to the authenticity of this exotic setting with its classic Asian décor.

We chose to sit on the outside terrace and our server Bella quickly brought prawn crackers with sweet chilli sauce and hot mint sauce – a first for me with an interesting sparky heat – as Chef Kate came to greet us and suggested we try some of her speciality dishes. An amuse-bouche of grilled prawn in a slightly sweet sauce topped with crisp vermicelli was almost too pretty to eat. But, we tucked in and from the first mouthful of the succulent, sweet shrimp, we knew we were in for a treat. We began our feast proper with the Royal Platter for two – a dish that’s certainly fit for a king or queen. Chicken satay and Angus beef skewers were delightfully tender and perfectly offset by the peanut and tamarind dipping sauces – the beef was something of a revelation as this dish is more usually served solely with chicken; huge Arabian prawns, their firm inners encased in a subtly crisp coating emphasised the restaurant’s reputation for the excellence of its seafood; and the stuffed crab was the star of this plate. A noodle-crumbed crunchy coating yielding to reveal a generous serving of salty-sweet crab meat offset with

fact magazine 78 • FOODIE CORNER

tiny slivers of spring onion for an added piquancy.

Chef Kate’s special recipe took the crispy spring rolls to another level. The herby minced veggie filling wrapped in a deliciously crisp, deep fried pastry coating with a plum sauce dip demanded our attention as we tried to distinguish the separate elements of an intriguing and moreish flavour experience.

The hot and sour Tom Yum soup is a personal favourite and I was not disappointed. Arriving at the table in steaming individual lidded pots, it was deliciously flavourful without being overly spicy and the liberal serving of big, juicy prawns made it extra special – I honestly believe I could eat this every day without getting bored. During a short break to relax and take in the glorious weather and the families enjoying the pool, the lovely Bella brought us warm towels to freshen up – a regular and truly thoughtful occurrence throughout our visit – and explained our soon-to-arrive main courses We started off with Phad Thai and I was quite surprised at how tasty and mild this usually spicy noodle dish was. It was served with small bowls of crushed chillis, crunchy peanuts and limes –so we could add our own chosen level of heat. Liberally coated with a sauce in which you can just pick out the subtle nuances of tamarind, shrimp and garlic paired with the sweetness of palm sugar, the chunky noodles, crisp veggies, more large, fluffy prawns and firm well-seasoned tofu make for comfort food extraordinaire and I was quite sad to limit myself to just a small serving to save space for the coming dishes.

Chef Kate had recommended Massaman Kra Kaea – a surprising dish since it is served with lamb shank instead of the usual beef. Beautifully presented, the meat was literally falling off the bone and the curry gravy, with its Thai and Indian influences was deeply

rich and flavoursome. Containing potatoes and roasted peanuts, which add an extra layer of richness to the texture and flavour, it was beautifully presented and rightly one of the chef’s star dishes. The show stealer for both myself and my companion, however, was the wok-fried hammour which came with an abundant serving of crunchy red and yellow peppers and pea eggplants in a delicious sauce that was both sweet and savoury with Thai herbs and the slight but well-controlled heat of red chilli. The seeds from the mildly sour pea eggplants added an interesting texture but the winners, for me, were the peppers and a really interesting topping of crispy fried, slightly spicy basil. Simply fabulous! We thought we couldn’t eat any more but were persuaded to share the speciality Mango Sticky Rice – a perfectly cubed, delightfully sweet mango doused in mango syrup accompanied by a sphere of sweet, gooey coconut rice topped with tiny daubs of moong dal, which added a delicious crunch. Served on a plate with an orchid flower and sprigs of fresh mint, which added a delightfully fresh tang to the sweet rice, we had each promised ourselves just a spoonful. But, needless to say, it disappeared within minutes. Totally replete, we could not have asked for a better way to round off the Eid holiday and we’re looking forward to a return visit at the end of the month when celebrity Chef Hong Thaimee is in town, from May 30 to June 3, showcasing her signature culinary skills at the restaurant and conducting a special cooking class. ✤

THE LAND OF THE GODS

With its rich history and mythology coupled with golden sunshine, lush scenery and many islands, Greece is a land of multiple contrasts. We highlight some of our favourite spots worthy of a summer visit.

• TRAVEL

CRETE

Crete is so big that it hardly qualifies as an island, but it’s not attached to the Greek mainland so, there we are. It has mountains, lakes, gorges and beaches, so there’s something for everyone whether you’re seeking hiking adventures, isolated scenic splendour or great nightlife.

Head to Chania with its lovely old town and harbour where you’ll find a selection of very chi-chi shops selling all manner of designer goods from beautifully blown glassware to unique jewellery pieces. There’re literally hundreds of restaurants in Chania town but we loved Koutourouki with its quaint décor and local cuisine with both vegetarian and vegan options available. And, if food’s your thing, you could also take a walking-tasting tour. Yum!

You can’t go to Crete without taking a trip to Elafonsi Beach. Situated on the remote southwest coast of the island, it’s known for its gorgeous pale pink sands and, if you catch it

at the right time, is truly a sight to see.

The White Mountains National Park is the only national park in Crete and centres around Samaria Gorge. At 16km, it is the longest gorge in Europe and, at its start it is 1,230m high. The 10km around the gorge is a stunning hiking area but make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen as it is very hot and dry in summer.

And, if you fly into the Cretan capital Heraklion, make sure you pay a visit to the Palace of Knossos, the ancient Minoan ruins that have been referred to as Europe’s oldest city. The palace is also where the mythological tale of Theseus and the Minotaur is said to have taken place.

As with its scenery, Crete’s nightlife options are varied. If you’re looking for a classic holiday clubbing experience, Hersonissos and Malia are both very popular with younger tourists. While those looking for a more refined option should head to Agios Nikolaos.

SYMI

Said to be one of the most precious gems of the Dodecanese, the island’s colourful villages provide a picturesque backdrop to a spot where relaxation is key.

Ancient footpaths crisscross the island and hiking is a popular activity – prepare to discover tiny chapels, small villages and secluded beaches. There are also several museums where you can get acquainted with local history. And, oh the beaches – these are one of Symi’s claims to fame so make sure you are prepared for swimming, snorkelling and water sports. They are mostly coves, some equipped with sunbeds and beach bars but others more secluded and reached by water taxi. We highly recommend Marathounda Beach where there’s not only a lovely taverna serving great

fact magazine 88 • TRAVEL

food but also the chance to get acquainted with the locals… in the form of the friendly goats who frequent the beach. Though Symi is one of the quieter islands, over the summer months it is transformed with the Symi Festival taking place throughout July, August and September and offering a vast array of cultural activities from traditional, modern and classical music to theatre, cinema, painting exhibitions, poetry and literature evenings. There are also several Christian religious festivals which are celebrated with music, dancing and feasting.

The nearest airport is on neighbouring Rhodes and daytrips between the two islands are popular.

SERIFOS

The hidden retreat of the arty ‘in’ crowd who’d rather not share it. But, hey, we found it and we’re telling you. Less than three hours by boat from Athens, this Cycladic gem has not yet hit the mainstream consciousness, so it’s the ideal place if you want to experience a taste of the true Greece with very few tourists.

The landscape is rugged and, we must confess, the truck ride up the side of a very steep hill to the main town, Chora, is a little hair raising but definitely worth it to discover a cluster of sugar-cube houses, chapels and ancient windmills that’s considered one of the most picturesque capitals around. And, being high up, it also boasts fabulous views across the island and the glittering Aegean waters.

Being, relatively, undiscovered, Serifos is not bursting with entertainment options but, what it does have is a huge number of beaches along its 80-plus kilometres of coastline. From sandy to shingle and a mix of the two, all are blessed with crystal-clear blue waters. A few are organised with sunbeds etc. but, if you’re willing to forgo this small comfort, you’ll find secluded bathing spots scattered across the island where you’re likely to be the only one around.

Head to Sikamia beach and Anna’s Taverna for seafood fresh from the local waters or try Livadakia beach, which is close to the port from which boats can be hired. If you’re feeling brave Lia, a celeb favourite, is said to be one of the island’s most beautiful beaches but make sure you take the factor 50 as beachwear is optional in some spots!

The island was once a mining outpost and you can trek the old mining trail to an abandoned bridge, which sits out over the sea at Megalo Livadi bay.

And, in Greek mythology, Serifos was home to the oneeyed Cyclops, among others, so take the chance to visit Cyclops Cape and climb up onto the Psraopyrgos or Cyclops throne – it will make for a great picture.

For a relatively quiet island, Serifos has no shortage of restaurants and cafes, mainly serving traditional food. We particularly like Stou Stratou in Chora, its blue and white exterior and colourful outdoor seating living up to every vision of Greek island dining. And, if you’re a grape fan, pay a visit to Chrysoloras where the focus is on organic, sustainable, bio grapes grown in a waterless, low-yield manner. Perfect to toast your holiday. ✤

HOLLYWOOD RE-IMAGINED

A new language of luxury finds a home in the spring-summer 23 collection from legendary Italian house, Ferragamo.

For Maximilian Davis’ Ferragamo debut, the designer unveils a new dawn for the brand: a renaissance of its Hollywood history. “I wanted to pay tribute to Salvatore’s start by bringing in the culture of Hollywood – but new Hollywood,” explains Davis. “Its ease and sensuality; its sunset and sunrise.”

This fresh language of luxury blends contemporary clarity with the purity of Florentine drape: an homage to the home of the house. Ethereal elegance materialises through sheer knits, liquid silk and layers of organza, but appears grounded by suede sandals drawn from Renaissance reality, and the tangible allure of polished accessories.

The languid, beachfront glamour of new Hollywood is subverted by glossy leathers, second-skin fits and micro shorts. Elevated everyday essentials – tank tops, polo necks, leggings – appear almost contradictory in their simplicity. Effortless knits are wide woven to reveal the skin beneath or so fine as to appear translucent. Even eveningwear is imbued with insouciance. Drawing upon the sparkling red shoes Ferragamo made for Marilyn Monroe in 1959, the collection appears scattered with crystals: the Hollywood hallmarks of glitz and glamour refracted anew.

Tailoring twists the classically masculine tropes of '80s executives into a modern wardrobe: perfectly proportioned, louche refinement formed from fabrics often reserved for womenswear. The tuxedo is imbued with new energy: shirting cut in silk organza and cotton poplin; collars or sleeves removed. “I want each piece to feel playful, but also desirable as an object,” says Davis. “To stand on its own.”

Floating scarves appear streamlined; archival prints reduced, redrawn and reimagined. Draped into new forms, they revitalise the formative codes of the Ferragamo DNA. “It was about looking into the archive and establishing what could be redefined to become relevant for today,” explains Davis.

A palette extracted from Rachel Harrison’s Sunset Series colours degradé prints and hand-dyed knits; from optic white to deep indigo, butter-soft yellow to sky blue. A new Pantone red formally codifies the brand’s iconic hue. ✤

Succession Tetris

Need to Know:

Succession is a satirical black comedy-drama TV series that first aired on HBO in 2018 and is now entering its fourth and final season. The show is centred around the incredibly wealthy Roy family, who are the owners of Waystar RoyCo – one of the biggest media and entertainment conglomerates in the world. This highstakes family drama highlights the power struggle between the patriarch Logan Roy and his four children, the would-be successors that are vying for his position.

Director: Jesse Armstrong

Cast : Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, Alan Ruck, J. Smith-Cameron, Alexander Skarsgård

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This 13 Emmy Award-winning show is critically acclaimed and possibly one of the best series out right now due to its highly elaborate and expertly crafted storyline. As it embarks on its finale, we circle back on the events which kicked off everything when Logan Roy (Brian Cox), after suffering a stroke, gives the impression that he’s ready to retire, which sets into motion a series of events. His four grown children, each with their own personal agenda, make a play to be named the new CEO to the Waystar RoyCo empire. Instead, Logan shocks his entire family by announcing he's staying on indefinitely and immediate chaos ensues. There is no loyalty or trust amongst any of the family members as each of them is looking to get the upper hand over the others in an attempt to secure the keys to the castle. This season is set to be the show's most engaging as the series is taking everything that it does well and ramping it up for its final outing.

Need to Know:

Simple, addictive and undeniably fun – Tetris is one of the best-selling video games of all time. This dramatised biographical film with the same name is based on true events, not well known by the masses; around the unexpectedly intense and thrilling race to license and patent the video game in the late 1980s during the Cold War.

Director: Jon S. Baird

Cast : Taron Egerton, Nikita Efremov, Sofia Lebedeva, Anthony Boyle, Toby Jones

Why Is It Worth Watching?

On hearing the word Tetris, you almost immediately get hit with nostalgia around having played this fantastic video game plenty of times as a kid. But if you were made aware that there’s a new movie based around it, I wouldn’t really blame you for being a bit confused, wondering what a story about this game could actually offer, let alone manage to keep you entertained for around two hours. But something tells me that it would surely pique your interest once you discovered that this film is based on a true event and is a Cold War-era-style thriller on steroids, with double-crossing villains, unlikely heroes and a nail-biting race to the finish. The story takes place in 1988, when Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) of Bullet-Proof Software is showcasing his new video game at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. While there, he instead becomes enamoured with the game Tetris, created by Russian programmer Alexey Pajitnov, who works for government-owned ELORG in the Soviet Union. Convinced that he’s discovered the next big thing, Rogers risks everything by travelling to Moscow to win the rights to the game. But many unpleasant surprises await him as he isn’t the only one looking to profit from it.

Stereo Mind Game By Daughter

Daughter are an English indie folk trio formed in 2010. Stereo Mind Game is their third album, inspired by lead member Elena Tonra’s long-distance relationship. The songs, in their lyrics and music, explore emotions evoked by separation, longing, imagining a future together –holding on and letting go.

The LP opens with the Intro, an instrumental piece, trance-like, setting the tone for what follows. On Be On Your Way, Tonra resigns to the distance between her and her lover, saying, “I won’t hold you back”. However, she is hopeful; “So, I'll meet you on another planet if the plans change”.

On Party, she sings, “And I refuse to believe that there's a problem, you see”, which shows denial, rooted in a fear of losing the memories they have made together, good and bad. Tonra is grappling with them as they slither away like “a rattlesnake”. It’s a mind game, like the album’s title suggests. A dedicated drum piece lends a soft-rock vibe, offering variety.

Dandelion encompasses just what the namesake flower symbolises – hope and freedom. Even though Tonra is “waitin’ for replies”, she’s “watchin' dandelions growin' by the grove”.

With stringsy melodies that conjure psychedelic feels, more on some songs such as Neptune, this one’s truly a mind game to play.

INDIE ROCK

The Record

By

Formed in 2018, Boygenius is a three-member American indie rock supergroup, comprising of individually successful artists, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The Record is their first studio album released via Interscope. Prior to this, they put out two EPs on Matador.

Listening to this 42-minute LP gives you a sense that the songs, the music, the lyrics, the vocals… are untainted, even raw, emotionally speaking. However, it’s all packaged with artistic finesse. The tracks are strung together by a common element, love, the various facets of which are touched upon across the 12 songs. On Emily I’m Sorry, we see forgiveness play out. On Satanic, a certain rebellious emotion; the repeating guitar piece on this one is catchy.

Without You Without Them, a short, harmonious acapella creation comes as a nice surprise. Characteristic of a monologue, a plea to a loved one: “Give me everything you've got” and “I'll give everything I've got/ Please, take what I can give”.

While all the songs exhibit rock musical elements from stringsy sounds to the rhythmic da-dum of the drums and wooshy cymbals, The Record offers a mix with soft tunes, which add depth to the album.

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE The True Love Experiment

The latest offering from bestsellers Christina Lauren, the combined pen name of long-time writing partners and best friends Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings. Fizzy Chen has an incredible career as a beloved romance novelist, but when she’s asked to give a commencement address, it hits her: she hasn’t been practising what she’s preached and has never really been in love. Connor Prince, documentary filmmaker and single father, is completely thrown when his profit-minded boss orders him to create a reality TV show about love. Can he make the queen of romance fall in love in front of the camera? Thus, T he True Love Experiment begins.

SCIENCE FICTION Fractal Noise

On the planet Talos VII, 23 years before the events of To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, an anomaly is detected. A vast circular pit, with dimensions so perfect that it could only have been the result of conscious design. So, a small team is assembled to learn more –perhaps even who built the hole and why. Their mission will take them on a hazardous trek to the very edge of existence. For one explorer, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. For another, a risk not worth taking. And for xenobiologist Alex Crichton, it's a desperate attempt to find meaning in an uncaring universe.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Sorry, Not Sorry! Baby, Baby Do Cry Too Much Of A Good Thing…

A video of the Dalai Lama, the most holy figure in Tibetan Buddhism, asking a boy to kiss him on the lips, sent shock waves across the internet. Shortly after planting a kiss on the child’s lips, he was seen asking the lad to suck his tongue. Many called this behaviour ‘inappropriate’, ‘scandalous’ and ‘disgusting’, suggesting it was paedophiliac. Following the uproar, the spiritual leader’s office issued an apology. However, some of his supporters justified his behaviour saying sticking

Japan's crying baby sumo festival returned for the first time in four years since the pandemic. The biggest event was held at Sensoji Temple in Tokyo, with smaller versions hosted at various spots across the country. The idea behind this tradition is that crying is believed to bring the infants good health. In Tokyo, the babes were made to wear ceremonial sumo aprons and held by their parents for a face off in the ring. The staff wore oni or demon masks, trying to scare

Netflix has, on multiple occasions, faced backlash for streaming historically inaccurate content. Most recently, after they released the trailer of their upcoming four-part docudrama, Queen Cleopatra . In it, Adele James, a black actor with mixed ancestry, is seen playing the role of the Egyptian queen, which has drawn criticism, reigniting the debate on Cleopatra’s ethnicity – Greek or not. However, we’re not here to discuss that. What we’re

one’s tongue out is a common Tibetan cultural practice to show agreement or respect. The question isn’t if the Dalai Lama made a mistake but how far will we go to cover up mistakes committed by certain people so as to protect our beliefs. And that he can make mistakes goes to show he is human so, should we be holding him or any mortal being for that matter in such high esteem that we turn a blind eye to their fallibility?

the children and, as soon as one of the opponents cried, he or she was declared a winner. While on the face of it, one might think of this practice as cruel, on deeper thought, it does make sense. We live in a culture where tears are still seen as a sign of weakness. But research has proved that crying helps reduce physical and emotional pain, promoting a sense of well-being. It’s time we normalised crying – and, like in Japan, from a young age.

here to highlight is the latest trend of moviemakers jumping on the inclusivity bandwagon. While representation is important, where do we draw the line – a South Asian Velma in Scooby Doo, Michael Jordan as a black superman, a black duke in Bridgerton… it makes one wonder if what we’re seeing is just a conniving attempt at inclusivity to earn Brownie points (pun intended) from a wider audience.
