balmy temperatures and then look forward with horror at what

we know is coming as we head into summer – sticky nights round the barbecue and feeling hot, even in the swimming pool. Thus, our thoughts turn to travel. If, like me, the thought of a mid-summer break is the only thing that keeps you going as your skin sticks to the seat in your fourwheeled oven and you rise before daylight to walk the dog without melting his paws, then this month’s cover story is specially for you. We’ve looked at some slightly different spots, both close to home and far, far away and I hope you’ll feel inspired after reading about them. On the subject of travel, Team FACT also took a delicious trip Monaco – I didn’t get to go this time but reading about it sure had me remembering some happy days there. Elsewhere we’ve checked out a trio of great eateries and visited lots of events – did you see us about and about? Check out the Society pages to see if our photographer spotted you. We also got behind the wheel of the latest offering from Cadillac, a first for us and very enjoyable. As usual you will find lots of news from around the city as well as from the worlds of tech, motors, gadgets and more.

THE ULTIMATE COMEBACK The island’s favourite Lebanese spot, at the Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa, has reopened with a whole new vibe.

Z

ahle Lebanese Restaurant reopened for Eid, with celebrity singer Hady Daou setting the scene for the evening with his performances on May 5 and 6. An icon of Lebanese entertainment, Zahle has been a favourite for the local community for many generations. With exceptional gastronomy and an unsurpassed live entertainment programme, it is no surprise that Zahle has become a firm choice for many of the kingdom’s locals and foreigners alike. The restaurant has earned its reputation for serving the best and most exquisite Lebanese food and drinks in Bahrain since its original inception in 1990. With its extraordinary culinary offering and well-earned reputation, this rather remarkable restaurant is making its comeback with refurbished and all-new interior décor, not to mention a whole new vibe of exciting live entertainment! A new beginning, with a new atmosphere and a new concept, Zahle is sure to set a new standard in the world of ‘all things Lebanese’. The menu flaunts an extensive selection of culinary delights, including hot and cold mezze, grilled meats and regional Lebanese fare including the 10

beautifully presented and delicately cooked shish kebab. The Gulf Hotel has been a favourite in Bahrain since its opening in the 1960s. The group is chaired by Farouk Yousuf Almoayyed and is led by a board of distinguished, well-established and influential businessmen in Bahrain. The vision of the then Bahrain Hotels Company was to provide a standard of hospitality unrivalled on the island, which was duly delivered with the opening of Bahrain’s first five-star property, the Gulf Hotel. Fifty-five years later, this ambition remains the same, although the Gulf Hotel has changed beyond recognition, continually expanding, and upgrading to meet the modern-day demands. Stay tuned to the Gulf Hotel’s official social media pages for more information on their new menu and timings, or stop by over on the first, second or third day of Eid to enjoy Zahle's allnew atmosphere! ✤

PLASTIC PEEVE Following on from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Bahrain has decided to ban single-use plastic starting from September 19. On the heels of Earth Day, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism (MoICT) announced the ban on the manufacture, import, sale and circulation of single-use plastic – that is under 35microns in thickness; an example of this is the thin, light-weight plastic bags that you get at cold stores. Plastic bags that are more than 35microns thick, including trash bags, those manufactured for export purposes and those used for medical purposes will be exempt from the ban, which will come into force on September 19. A similar announcement was made some years ago but nothing materialised. This time though, the Kingdom is determined to enforce the ban in keeping with its efforts toward carbon reduction and sustainability. Bahrain is preceded by Dubai and Abu Dhabi which also declared a curb on plastic use to reduce the pollution and greenhouse gas emissions caused by it. Last year, during the COP 26 climate summit, Bahrain pledged net-zero emissions by 2060 to protect the environment. It was also among the 47 countries that committed to developing climate-resilient, low-carbon health systems, which means a health system that can anticipate, respond to, cope with and recover from climate-related shocks and stress leading to sustainable 12

fact magazine

improvements in general health. Furthermore, sustainability is a principle of the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, which focuses on the environment and waste management among other related issues such as biodiversity, marine conservation and sustainable resource management. Plastic severely hampers the environment and is a waste management nightmare. The decision to ban single-use plastic will contribute toward the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainability and reducing pollution. Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani said that the MOICT held stakeholder engagement sessions especially with the private sector through the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He added that the conducted surveys showed that all local factories intend to manufacture multi-use plastic bags that are more than 35 microns in thickness. The survey also showed that 86% of these local factories would continue to manufacture plastic products that are exempt from the new regulation or alternatives to the banned single-use bags.✤

IN SUPPORT OF ART A voluntarily cash contribution of BD1 from patrons and lovers of art will now be accepted at hotels, restaurants and other tourist centres. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) announced that, starting this month, tourist establishments such as hotels, restaurants, hotel apartments and furnished apartments will ask customers if they would like to make a voluntary contribution of BD1, which will be used to support art in the Kingdom. For those who wish to participate, this amount will be charged per invoice and will be added to checkout bills, food bills and other such depending on the tourist facility. No personal data will be required from those who don’t wish to take part in the initiative. The amount collected will be used directly to support the initiatives and programmes of Bahrain’s National Council for Arts (NCA). The NCA was set up last year under the royal decree of HRH King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa bin Hamad Al Khalifa was appointed as its chairman under a second decree by HRH. The organisation was tasked with developing and promoting all types of art – visual, audio and print – and spreading awareness about 14

the importance of its social impact. The council is also responsible for developing a national strategy to support art and implementing plans to advance art and artists in the Kingdom. Further, it supervises the implementation of artistic programmes, hosts international art fairs, events and exhibitions, creates suitable platforms and opportunities for artists and facilitates their access to the necessary technical tools and information. Encouraging investment in the art sector and encouraging participation in local and international art events are other duties that fall under the purview of the council. It will also cooperate with international bodies and institutions specialising in art or art research to develop the local movement.✤

UAE SAUDI ARABIA Much has changed in the ‘Magic Kindgom’ in recent years, not least of which is its strong desire to attract tourists. The ancient city of Al Ula is at the forefront of the drive to welcome visitors. Saudia airlines and Flydubai both serve Al Ula's International Airport, which has been newly renovated and is located 30-minutes away from the city centre. Having major historical significance, this ancient city was once at the crossroads of the Silk Route and Incense Route. Dubbed ‘The World’s Masterpiece’, it has varied experiences to offer from archaeological attractions and adventure trails to safaris and geological charms. The Heritage Oasis Trail is the best way to explore Al Ula. Starting from Dadan, an ancient kingdom and capital city of the Lihyanite and Dadanite civilisations, it offers an experience of the AlWadi area and the Old Town. Explore the Old Town Market, dotted with a variety of local artisan stores, cafes and more. You can pick up a souvenir from one of the handicraft stores or tuck into speciality local foods. Exhibiting fine rock art, Jabal Ikmah, a mountain near Dadan, has thousands of inscriptions in Aramaic, Dadanitic, Thamudic, Minaic and Nabataean across numerous sites – like an open-air library. Al Aqra’a features more than 450 early Arabic inscriptions and Naqsh Zuhayr features one of the oldest inscriptions of the Islamic era, which dates back to 644 CE. Elephant Rock or Jabal Al Fil is another major attraction. A rock shaped like an elephant, it’s a geological marvel, considering the ‘trunk’ and ‘body’ of this monolithic red sandstone beast were shaped by natural forces — millions of years of wind and water erosion.

Located on the eastern coast of the Indian Ocean – the only emirate on the east coast – Fujairah’s climate is more moderate compared to Dubai or Abu Dhabi and it's certainly less glitzy and busy. Its shores extend for 70km along the Gulf of Oman, making it home to white sandy beaches. Nestled in the foothills of the Al-Hajar Mountains, it’s distinguished by its rugged mountains, valleys, waterfalls and oases. There are several attractions that offer a peek into the history of this emirate. Considered the UAE’s oldest fort, Fujairah Fort was once the residence of the ruling family. Having numerous halls, towers and teak doors, this structure exhibits the traditional aesthetic of Emirati architecture. Surrounding it is Fujairah Heritage Village, which displays the early lifestyle of the locals. Overlooking Wadi Ham, Bithnah Fort is worth visiting too. It’s said to have played a key role in the emergence of Fujairah as an independent emirate. Built in 1446 AD, Al-Badiyah Mosque, the oldest in the UAE, also exhibits the true craftsmanship of the locals of the time with its pointed domes supported by an internal pillar, prayer hall adorned with arches and ventilators and a mihrab – prayer spot that points to the Mecca. There’s a graveyard near the mosque that houses a large tomb dating to the Iron Age. You will also find other artefacts such as pieces of broken pots and arrowheads from 1000 BC. Fujairah has many hot, cold and mineral springs. Located just outside Fujairah city is Ain Al-Madhab mineral spa, which produces warm sulphuric water. Declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, Wadi Al Wurayah is a natural attraction, offering outdoor activities such as hiking. The Wadi Al Wurayah waterfalls add to the area’s beauty.

Highlight: Visit Hegra, the Kingdom’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to more than 110 tombs carved from giant rock formations. Only three out of these tombs, however, are accessible to the public.

Highlight: For a beachy adventure, head to Snoopy Island, which gets its name from the rocks that look like the cartoon character Snoopy. The area is surrounded by beautiful reefs teeming with rich marine life, ideal for snorkelling and diving.

Top Tip: If you’re famished after all that exploring, Al Jadidah has restaurants, food trucks, art galleries and shaded seating areas.

Top Tip: Remember there are seven emirates, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are just two of them.

OMAN JORDAN Jordan offers both old-town heritage experiences and modern attractions such as a vibrant nightlife. However, you will find the latter mostly in Amman, the capital city – Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan’s main airport, is about 30km from Amman. That being said, this largest city of Jordan also has historical significance. There are numerous archaeological sites that you can explore such as the Citadel, which includes the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace and the Byzantine Church. Nestled at the foot of the Citadel is a 6,000-seater Roman theatre, carved into the hill and still used for cultural events. A visit to the Jordan Archaeological Museum, The Folklore Museum and the Museum of Popular Traditions will offer a glimpse into the rich heritage of the city. Featuring colonnaded streets, a vaulted terrace and the ruins of two theatres, Umm Qays, which was historically known as Gadara, was a renowned cultural centre. Home to several classical poets and philosophers, it’s perched atop a hill overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee – dine on the terrace and enjoy the breathtaking view. Ajloun offers numerous forest trails, which will appeal to the nature lover. Hit The Tourist Street in Madaba for handicrafts, mosaic and religious souvenirs.

Salalah is a land of striking landscapes, geological attractions and monsoon rains! Ayn Athum, Ayn Khor, Wadi Darbat and Ayn Gogub are popular waterfalls here and Ayn Sahalnoot, Ayn Razat, Ayn Jarziz and Ayn Hamran are popular springs that you can visit. Known for its striking landscapes, Salalah has valleys such as Wadi Darbat where you can enjoy a paddle boat ride on the natural canal. Kayaking is also available. This valley has two beautiful waterfalls and you can find Travertine Curtains here – pockmarked rocks on the cliff’s face. Mughsayl Beach has a photogenic landscape. In addition, the long stretch of blue water and white sands also has natural fountains. It’s the perfect location for birdwatching and enjoying a mesmerising sunset. Located right beside Mughsayl Beach is Marnie Cave – a spelunking attraction – or you can simply sit in the shade of the caves. A stone’s throw from the cave is the Mughsayl Blowholes – yet another geological attraction – from which jets of water explode into the air when the sea is slightly rough. If you’re the adventurous type, you’ll enjoy trekking the Tawi Attair sinkhole, the most popular in Dhofar. A unique experience to try is a car drive at Salalah Anti-Gravity Point – your car moves uphill at a speed of 40 to 60km/h but in neutral gear with zero acceleration.

Highlight: Explore Petra – a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s appeal mainly comes from its spectacular setting deep inside a narrow desert gorge. Access to the city is through a 1.2km-long gorge called the Siq that leads directly to Al-Khazneh, which is believed to be the mausoleum of Nabataean king Aretas IV.

Highlight: Jabal Samhan on the eastern side of Salalah is one of the major mountain ranges in Dhofar, reaching 2,100 metres. It offers a breathtaking view of the ‘Sea of Clouds’ and you can capture the time lapse of the moving clouds from atop.

Top Tip: Stay away from animal abuse – explore Petra on foot instead of using the donkey- and camel-rides. This way, you also shed the holiday calories!

Top Tip: Unlike much of the region, the weather here is pleasant during the monsoons from June to August, making it a great summer escape.

FINLAND BHUTAN Everyone has to fly via somewhere as there are only two airlines flying into Bhutan: Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines. But you can get there via India and Nepal and, let’s face it, who doesn’t want to visit the country with the world’s Only Ministry of Happiness. The flight into Paro, Bhutan’s main airport, is one of the most spectacular in the world coming in along the Himalayan range. But landing is subject to weather conditions, so, leave yourself plenty of time. You can also drive five hours from Bengal to Bhutan’s southern gateway Phuentsholing. Once you get there, you won’t find many other visitors, so, you’ll get certain bragging rights – many people have never heard of the place – but you’ll also need to be prepared to hand over plenty of cash. You’ll also not catch sight of Starbucks or McDonalds on the peaceful, calm streets and the environment and culture have been preserved. With a backdrop of mountains wherever you look, there is certainly plenty to do, from river rafting and kayaking to archery, multiple colourful festivals and the chance to get acquainted with some of the country’s wilder inhabitants on a safari – you might even be lucky enough to glimpse the elusive snow leopard! Highlight: Take a trek to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery at Taktsang. It’s a stiff hike but very well worth it. The monastery, a series of buildings on the side of a mountain, was originally built around the early 1500s on the site of a cave where Guru Rimpoche meditated in the seventh century. It was destroyed by fire in the late 1990s and later rebuilt in the style of the eighth century. Top Tip: Unlike in some other countries, taking a guided tour in Bhutan will really enhance your experience. 28

There’s more to Finland than Father Christmas – and yes, we know, that’s Finnish Lapland. In fact, you can still visit Rovaniemi, The Official Home of Santa Clause, and cross the Arctic Circle in summer time. And this Nordic country has much to offer allround for the summer visitor. Known as the Land of the Midnight Sun; after many months of almost total darkness, north of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set at all between May and August and, even further south, it is visible for almost 24 hours in June and July. Thus, as you can imagine, Finns make the most of these ‘White Nights’. Not surprisingly, a great deal of time is spent outdoors – weather during the summer is usually temperate and warm – and there is plenty to see and do. A great way to enjoy the long summer nights is to rent a cottage in the countryside near one of the almost 2,000 lakes (that’s one for every 26 people!). Take a midnight swim, go hiking or canoeing or even enjoy a round of golf in the wee small hours. And don’t miss the festivals – there are lots of them. From the massive, such as Weekend Festival – described as “one of the wildest electronic [EDM, house and techno] parties in northern Europe” – to things like Ilosaarirock, which is mostly volunteer organised and features national and international artists. And then there are the forests. Oh, the forests. They cover more than 75% of the land area and many are open to the public. Forest bathing anyone? Highlight: Don’t forget the capital, Helsinki. An amazing city on the southern peninsula, it has something for everyone from shopping to a major party and festival scene not to mention beaches. Top Tip: Drink tap water, everywhere, it’s safe, super clean and is said to taste better than the bottled varieties.

ITALY This might seem a rather obvious one but Italy is a land of so many contrasts that you really can find something to suit everyone. And with new routes to Milan and Rome from Gulf Air, it’s never been easier to get there. Milan, the gateway to the north, is a fashionista’s paradise. Here, budget allowing, you will find virtually all the huge brands. But, you can also head off the stiletto-beaten track to discover new designers and those striving for a more ethical fashion scene through the CNA (National Confederation of Artisanship). Or visit SNAP, one of the city’s biggest second-hand stores, which also collaborates with promising new designers, because we all love a bargain, right? Head to the lakes, such as Como and Garda for boating and people watching. Lake Como is particularly known for its popularity with international celebs and, while you might not exactly get to rub shoulders, you can certainly check out the magnificent villas they inhabit. Further south is Rome, the ‘Eternal City’, where you will find more culture than it’s possible to fit in one visit – from museums and galleries to history and music. Of course, no visit would be complete without a trip to Vatican City, regardless of your faith. Naples and Pompeii are close together and can be covered in a couple of days. In Naples eat pizza! At Pompeii, prepare for lots of walking and a certain feeling of awe at the sight of a whole ancient city destroyed by a volcanic eruption so swift that people were caught off guard going about their daily lives. And, if you’re looking for heat, go south where life is slower, hotter and more traditional. The Highlight: The food. Seek out small eateries, watch where locals are dining. Go big on tomatoes, olives, olive oil and bread. Italy is known for its simple but superb cuisine, make the most of it. Top Tip: Do visit the Amalfi Coast. Don’t go in high summer! 30

With rugged mountains, mediaeval villages and a strip of beaches along the Adriatic coastline, it’s often called the ‘hidden gem’ of Europe and it’s not hard to see why. There is much to see and do here. Tara Canyon is an amazing natural wonder and the world’s second deepest, after the Grand Canyon. For the brave, there is whitewater rafting (though the water’s chilly) and you cross the canyon on a zipline. One of the most popular places to visit is Kotor with its old town and amazing fjord-like bay. Thanks to its long-ago Venice-citystate rulers, the place is distinctly Venetian in style and is also one of the Adriatic coast’s best preserved medieaval fort towns. A trek to the high town walls, will provide a good day’s workout. Had to the Budva Riviera for the crystalline waters of the Adriatic sheltered by a glorious mountainous backdrop and make sure to visit Old Town Budva, a 2,500-year-old walled city, that, today, has a buzzing social scene. Also make a stop at Sveti Stefan, once famous as a Hollywood hangout and currently enjoying a stylish renaissance. For nature lovers, a trip to Durmitor National Park is a must. Home to Tara Canyon, the park boasts 18 natural glacial lakes and is home to a whole range of wildlife, from bears to wild boar. The Highlight: Head for the, still unspoilt, Lustica Peninsula to visit the Blue Grotto which is named for its spectacularly blue water. It’s only accessible by boat and there are regular tours from April to October. Top Tip: Most local cuisine revolves around meat, so, if you’re veggie or vegan, do your research and plan ahead.

AUSTRALIA Never mind the mainland, head to what Aussies call Tassie. The cooler months in Tasmania span from May to September, making it the perfect destination for those of us on the other side of the equator. The island state is densely forested – Tarkine, containing Savage River National Park, located in the island's far north west, is the largest temperate rainforest area in Australia covering about 3,800sq/km. Tasmania’s wilderness is best experienced on foot and if you’re someone who enjoys an adventure, hiking through the many breathtaking national parks makes a great winter activity. Try out world-famous walks such as Overland Track, traversing Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park; Three Capes Track across the Tasman Peninsula and the South Coast Track located in Southwest National Park. Some other nature-inspired adventures on the west coast include the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, Strahan village and the Wilderness Railway. The walks offer a complete experience in the heart of nature replete with staggering sea cliffs, majestic mountains, rainforests abundant in flora and fauna, beautiful beaches and bays and wonderful wildlife. While a part of the walk is an actual walk, you can even expect boat rides and fly cruises where a plane will take you up and hover allowing you a magnificent view of the ground. Highlight: Bruny Island is a popular holiday spot with beaches, walking trails and gastronomic adventures. There’s a thriving food and grape culture here and you can sample the choicest grape paired with cheese – some of the artisan varieties are known to be the finest in Australia – and oysters straight from the sea. Explore the island on a guided walk, tasting the local produce and enjoying luxurious stays. If you’re lucky, you will spot Australian fur seals, dolphins, migrating whales and sea birds during an eco-cruise or a kayaking adventure close to the rugged coast and in deep sea caves. Top Tip: Take jungle-strength bug spray and don’t be a feast for the Aussie Mozzies! 32

JAPAN There’s no escaping the fact that Japan is an economic heavyweight. Its capital city, Tokyo, has so much going on, it’s hard to know where to start. And Mount Fuji is iconic. But we’d suggest stepping away from the well-known spots for something a little different. Also known as Ogasawara Islands, the Bonin Islands are an archipelago of over 30 subtropical and tropical islands about 1,000km directly south of Tokyo. Chichijima and Hahajima are the only two inhabited islands in the group. The archipelago is accessible by a 24-hour-long ferry journey from central Tokyo. Home to more than 190 endangered species, such as the Bonin flying fox, over 400 native plant species, and a crystal-clear ocean packed with marine life, the Bonin Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sometimes referred to as the Galápagos of the Orient, the plants and animals here have evolved uniquely since these islands have never been connected to a continent. Explore the rich and rare flora and fauna here during a guided trek through the forests. You can also explore the rich marine treasures that lie beneath the surrounding waters, which are a natural habitat for dolphins and whales. There are dolphin and whale watching tours from Chichijima Island – you can spot sperm whales from May to November and listen for the songs of the whales through an underwater microphone. Scuba diving and kayaking are available for both beginners and experts. Highlight: Minamijima Island is the jewel in the crown of this archipelago. A striking rock arch over a turquoise blue lagoon serves as the gateway to this uninhabited island, where a maximum of 100 visitors are allowed to enter for no more than two hours at a time. This landscape is so unique and rare in the world that it is designated as a natural monument. Top Tip: Japan has some pretty strict social protocols, do your homework to avoid offence.

PHILIPPINES MEXICO Certainly, we’ve all heard of Cancun, with its perfect sandy beaches and, occasionally, shady reputation. And Mexico City itself, one of the liveliest cities in the world, teeming with culture and a high-octane buzz. But, as always, there’s more to this Central American destination. If you’re fascinated by architecture, head to Puebla, which is peppered with ornate churches and cathedrals, magnificent houses, colonial buildings and the more modern museums, libraries, art galleries and government buildings. The state promotes 12 tourist routes, seven in the capital city of Puebla de Zaragoza – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and five over the rest of the state. Details to watch out for include the use of Talavera ornamental tiles, as found in Casa de los Muñecos. Commonly spotted in Puebla city, the tilework renders facades beautifully colourful. Many churches and buildings exhibit folk baroque architecture and the Museo Internacional del Barroco is worth a visit. Other attractions include Museo Amparo, which is set within two colonial buildings and houses the finest collections of Mexican art, and Fuertes de Loreto y Guadalupe – the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe – which were originally built as chapels in the 16th century but fortified in the 1800s to protect the city during its independence struggle. The Battle of Puebla which took place here on May 5 1862 is celebrated every year as the Cinco de Mayo holiday. Tour the beautiful colonial city of Cholula, home to the Great Pyramid of Cholula – an archaeological site. Also take a volcano tour. Hike the mountains and take in the spectacular natural scenery of Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl.

If you’re looking for respite from the summer heat, head to the Cordillera region in Luzon Island in the Philippines for culture, adventure and mummies! Sparsely populated, it is the perfect getaway. Known among the Filipino community as the Shimla – an Indian hill station – of the Philippines, the region is landlocked and primarily mountainous with cool temperatures. Hailed as the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio City in Benguet province of the Cordillera Region rarely experiences temperatures higher than 26 degrees Celsius even during the warmest season of the year. Burnham Park, Wright Park and Baguio Cathedral are some sightseeing spots. You can even visit a local strawberry farm at La Trinidad, capital of Benguet, and pick your own strawberries – the strawberry taho (hot silken tofu with sweet syrup and sago pearls) is a must-try. Benguet is home to natural and scenic landscapes. Mount Pulag, the highest mountain peak in Luzon, almost 3,000 metres above sea level, offers breath-taking views and is home to rich highland flora and fauna. Mines View Park offers striking vistas of Benguet’s mountain ranges. Cordillera Region is home to many ethnic tribes commonly referred to as the Igorot. You can learn about the indigenous culture and people at the Bontoc Museum. Dap-ay or Ato is a historic site steeped in the tribal culture. Visit to learn crafts such as basket and fabric weaving and buy souvenirs to take home. A spelunking adventure awaits at Sumaguing Cave in the Sagada municipality of Mountain Province – beautiful rock formations and natural pools make the physically daunting descent underground worth it. Additionally, you could scale the 2,000-year-old Banaue Rice Terraces – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – in Ifugao province, where the famous Tinawon rice grows.

Highlight: While you’re there, don’t forget to try the traditional mole sauce – mole poblano, one of the most popular, is named after Puebla city.

Highlight: Mountain Province is popular for its hanging coffins, where the mummified remains of the local ancestors are found!

Top Tip: Even though you will be outside of Mexico City, stay alert and keep a close eye on your valuables and cash. Don’t wear obviously expensive jewellery.

Top Tip: You will need to provide up-to-date proof of Covid-19 vaccination to enter the country. Make sure you check restrictions before you go.

LEVELLING UP The new CT5 enters the midsized luxury sedan segment with intent.

• ISLAND RIDES

A

s the saying goes: “Variety is the spice of life.” The FACT magazine team couldn’t agree more and we were hugely grateful to be handed the keys to the new Cadillac CT5, compliments of the outstanding team at National Motor Company. Despite test driving vehicles for many years, this was to be our first Cadillac experience and we were more than curious to see what this US-based creation has to offer in terms of looks, comfort and performance. Exterior Design The first thing we noticed about the CT5 is how good-looking it is. Replacing its predecessor, the CTS, this latest model has been designed to contend with European luxury sport sedans, a challenge the designers were clearly ready to take on. Configured with sporty intent, the CT5 with its athletic lines and Wave Metallic Blue paintwork certainly looks the part. Our CT5 featured the luxury trim, and despite this being the baseline model, it comes equipped with many quality features, including signature Cadillac vertical LED headlights, a capless fuelling system and alloy painted wheels. The body has undoubtably been shaped with aerodynamics in mind. At the front end, vertical ducts channel air through the fascia and around the tires, optimising aerodynamic flow and decreasing vehicle drag. Active aero grille shutters, located under the iconic Cadillac grille, automatically open and close to control air flow. These assist in drag reduction, emission reduction and fuel efficiency. At the flanks, the muscular stance of the vehicle is underscored by bold lines and 18-inch wheels displaying a Bright Silver finish. The inclined, fast-back figure of the CT5 with its solid, aerodynamic decklid form, decreases rear lift and augments tire traction at greater speeds. We found that the body-coloured rocker mouldings, door handles and side mirrors highlighted the exclusive nature of this shapely sedan. The well-balanced proportions of the CT5 continue at the back end, with LED tail lamps complete with red outer lenses adding to the modern look of the exterior. Under the body-coloured rear bumper sits a dual-trapezoid exhaust, separated by a bodycoloured rear valance. All-in-all, the exterior of this new Cadillac demands attention and, we have to say, it definitely holds its own against its European competitors in this area. Interior Design: Switching our focus to the interior, we eased ourselves into the supportive and comfortable front seats. Handcrafted using premium materials, the inside of the CT5 has been painstakingly designed, with attention being given to every little detail. Task orientated ambient lighting adds a further touch of refinement to an already stylish layout, whilst dual-zone climate control ensures the comfort of all occupants. The CT5 is one of the smaller cars in the midsized luxury sedan segment, however, we found the cabin, and indeed the rest of the vehicle, to be reasonably spacious, with sufficient leg, head, and shoulder room in both front and rear seating. Installing a child

38

fact magazine

seat would be a relatively simple task, thanks to easily accessible anchors. This contributes toward the practical and everyday nature of this vehicle. As far as internal storage goes, there are reasonably-sized storage bins and large cup holders, along with a spacious cubby hole. The vertical wireless charger also frees up more space thanks to its novel design. The luggage compartment offers almost 337 litres of space, big enough to store five carry-on suitcases. This area is greatly increased when the 60/40 split rear seats are folded flat. Technology The CT5 features the latest CUE infotainment system, displayed on a high-quality, 10-inch touchscreen, located in the centre of the fine-looking dashboard. We were surprised by how much we appreciated the physical controls that had replaced the touch sensitive ones of the previous generation. This well organised and easy-to-operate system can be controlled via a rotary wheel located behind the gearshift or via interaction with the touchscreen. A dual-mic, cloud-based, voice recognition system has also been included. This setup is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We found the GPS to be of a very high standard and were informed that a premium head-up display can also be installed on request. Power & Performance As with every vehicle we inspect, getting out onto the roads was our favourite part of the experience. The CT5 is equipped with the standard 2.0-litre Twin Scroll Turbo, four-cylinder, petrol engine. It produces 237hp at 5,000rpm, and 258lb-ft of torque at 1,5004,000rpm. Combined with a 10-speed automatic transmission, this rear-wheel-drive can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.9 seconds and produce an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. It didn’t take long for us to appreciate the sound-optimised cabin as we made our way along the busy streets of Manama. Active Noise Cancellation technology eliminates undesirable disturbance, ensuring a quiet journey for all occupants. The ride quality is further enhanced by the smooth handling, accurate steering and a well-tuned suspension system.

Safety and Assistance One of the most important and impressive features of the CT5 is that it has been awarded a five-star crash-test rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This means that you are about as safe as you can be inside a car when you are in the CT5. Cadillac have also equipped the vehicle with a vast array of additional safety and performance features, including a blindspot monitoring system that causes your seat to vibrate whenever a vehicle enters those hard to see spaces around your car. Our Verdict Cadillac have produced a real contender in the midsized luxury segment, one that will have its European competitors sitting up and taking notice. ✤

In Conversation with…

HE Sheikh Khaled bin Khalifa Al Khalifa The General Director of Vatel Bahrain on job satisfaction and the importance of training for the Kingdom’s tourism sector.

What was it that first drew you to the hospitality industry? People! I knew I wanted to be around people. After spending about seven-and-a-half years in public finance, I decided to move from a back-office-type job to one where I knew I would have endless opportunities to interact with people. I wanted this so I could not only expand my skills but also grow my network. I thought about working at the airport as well as in the hospitality industry as I knew both options would offer a dynamic working environment where I would get to meet people from all cultures and walks of life. Besides being a growing and interesting industry, I discovered that there is something about serving others that is very satisfying and fulfilling. Not only this, but I also learned that hotels provide a unique working environment and also take pride in offering in-house training which leads to promotion and a comparably fast career progression both locally and internationally. Not long after, I was offered an opportunity to work in a public educational institution where I found myself enjoying the contribution my work had in supporting the success of our students and I became even more fulfilled. A few years later, and here I am heading-up a prestigious educational institution 52

that offers an international degree locally that also caters to the hospitality and tourism industry. Isn’t life sweet? How do you think Vatel contributes towards the growth of the industry in terms of Vision 2030 and its role in empowering youth, particularly young Bahrainis? Vatel was established here in Bahrain in 2018 in order to fulfil the aims of Vision 2030. Indeed, many readers may not realise that although we are a private higher education institution, we actually operate under the patronage of the Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority. The reason for our establishment was to professionalise the industry, encourage more Bahrainis to join the industry and fill the many positions within luxury hotels and resorts. Vatel was selected because it is the top degree in France for Hospitality & Leisure Management (QS world ranking 2022) and we need to supply this growing industry with well-qualified graduates. Our bachelor’s in International Hotel Management offers students a management degree that is focused on the hospitality and tourism industry. The core modules within the degree are Management, Marketing and Human Resources,

and our unique teaching method stimulates students as it is 50% practical (they learn from leaders within four- and five-star hotels) which means when they graduate, they have more than two years’ relevant work experience. Our first batch of students will graduate this academic year and we are pleased that most have already been offered jobs within this vibrant industry. What are your plans for the future of the school and what do you hope to achieve going forward? Currently, around 60% of our student body are Bahrainis, followed by 10% from KSA and the rest are from various places around the world ranging from the Seychelles to the UK. We hope to maintain this cultural diversity within our students going forward. We also hope to increase student mobility both by welcoming students from overseas to Vatel, and also by our students participating in our award-winning Marco Polo student exchange programme whereby any Vatel student can choose to study at another Vatel campus in their second year (the Vatel group has 55 campuses in 31 countries and 9,000 students globally). We already have a successful partnership with EKLYA School of Business in Lyon, France, and we are looking for other university partners too. We have many more exciting plans for the future of Vatel in Bahrain. We hope to launch our MBA within the next calendar year, and we also hope to open a training centre that will offer short courses in hospitality, as well as tailored courses in leadership, marketing, entrepreneurship etc. The other project in the pipeline is that in the very near future, we hope to introduce other Vatel brands including Vatel Café, Vatel Restaurant and Vatel Gourmet, so watch this space… These brands will provide our students with real-life learning opportunities and will also bring something new to the market here.

Do you think the hospitality sector in Bahrain can ever reach full capacity or can the economy absorb ever increasing numbers of hotels, restaurants etc? The fact that the largest hotel conglomerates continue to invest in new properties and resorts here is extremely positive and is testament to the fact that they believe Bahrain will continue to attract growing numbers of visitors. Not only this, but Vision 2030 is encouraging the economy to diversify away from traditional sources of income such as oil and gas and into tourism instead. It is also great for competition as an increased number of hotels and restaurants will only serve to increase competition, so heightened levels of service and innovation will be key to winning guest satisfaction and therefore succeeding in this competitive market. Bahrain’s strategy is to significantly increase visitor numbers and there are many exciting projects underway in order to achieve this. There are multiple new beach developments, an increased number of world-class events will be brought to Bahrain, as well as diversification of the tourism industry itself – The Minister of Industry, Commerce & Tourism, HE Zayed R. Al Zayani is aiming to position Bahrain as a competitor to other regional destinations for winter sun holidays, weddings and medical tourism and the Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority is strongly supporting these efforts. Having come through the pandemic, what do you think will be the biggest challenge facing the Kingdom’s hospitality sector going forward? The biggest challenge for the industry here in Bahrain is recruiting qualified staff. Hotel occupancies are rising and some are above pre-pandemic levels. The industry is looking for qualified talent and that is what we seek to provide them with. ✤ fact magazine

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

A DEVELOPMENTAL JOURNEY Chef Juan Luis Perez Moeremans, Executive Sous Chef at The Westin and Le Meridien, City Centre Bahrain, tells us about early ambitions and pursuing Michelin standards.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

How did you first become interested in the culinary world, who are your influences? My family always owned restaurants where my father was the chef. That excited my passion for cooking from an early age. By 15, I was already helping my father in a professional kitchen at our family restaurant in Brussels. I was born in Jimena de la Frontera, Cádiz, southern Spain, to a Spanish father and a Belgian mother. The family left Spain when I was 12 years old. At the age of 22 I went back to Spain. Looking back. the first dish I ever prepared was Lemon Bavarois, my favourite section of the kitchen was the fish section and my favourite fish is red mullet. You had Michelin-level experience very early on in your career, how would you say this exposure has affected your personal culinary development? It was and still is the best background to have and it gave me very high expectations for my own career direction. Michelinstarred restaurants are recognised worldwide for their quality and attention to detail and that is something I carry with me and implement in every kitchen I work in. The Westin & Le Meridien is your latest venture outside of

Spain. What made you make the move and what are the differences/similarities you find in the kitchen? The Westin & Le Meridien offered me the possibility to reach one of my career goals, joining again an international hotel chain. With the Salero project, I had the opportunity to join this property and also work with Marriott International. Previously I was between Belgium, France and Spain and this is my first time working in a GCC country, I’m enjoying the experience. Each property, regardless of the country, has a different system that, as a chefs, we need to adapt to and ensure the best guest experience, each country has different guest profiles and tastes, as a chef, I take advantage of that to grow both personally and professionally. What is your signature dish and why? What makes it popular? My early favourite was a Spanish dish called Fritura Malagueña (assorted deep-fried small fish and squid) and gazpacho. But now, I cannot name anything other than paella in any of the versions. It is my most famous country dish and the signature of Salero restaurant that we prepare from natural and fresh ingredients. Our guests love it because they can taste the authenticity of both the ingredients and my own traditional cooking methods. ✤ fact magazine

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

E

ach time you enter the Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa, you feel a sense of pride to be standing in such an iconic place. Established in 1969, the hotel represents everything Bahraini hospitality and luxury stand for. The restaurant’s blue and white interior was welcoming, aesthetically appealing and soothing to the eyes. While the space was well-lit, it had shutter-style windows, which allowed natural lighting to brighten up the whole place. The wooden floors and other details like wooden panels on the wall extending to the ceiling, looked elegant. We recommend you dine here at leisure or for an extended business lunch or dinner because you will need a lot of time to experience the many flavours of Italy. We started with homemade grissini, focaccia and Tuscan bread. These were served with a side of butter and freshly made tapenade, as well as olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Our appetisers were Insalata Caprese con Mozzarella di Bufala, an immaculately plated dish exhibiting the colours of the Italian flag. The pungent wild rucola leaves worked beautifully with the creamy mozzarella. The tartness of marinated cherry tomatoes and balsamic vinegar reduction complemented these well. The second appetiser was Gamberoni al Profumo di Agrumi. Served in a purple cabbage leaf bowl, it was a baked shrimp and wild rucola salad with herbs and a citrus fruit reduction. The shrimps were cooked perfectly, and their sweetness was well-balanced with the pungent rucola leaves. The citrusy dressing gave it a certain freshness, perfect for a summer antipasti.

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

While we waited on the next course, we were served some refreshing beverages. I had the Mixed Berry Mojito, which was a beautiful purple drink with fresh berries, mint, lime and sparkling water. The tartness of the berries and the fizz of the sparkling water helped, as Italian food is usually rich. We also tried the Sicilian Passion and Casa Colada, we recommend these for those who prefer sweeter drinks. You cannot imagine an Italian meal without pizza and pasta. We tucked into the La Pergola pizza with its interesting topping combination of beef pepperoni and broccoli. You would think that the two don’t go together, but they do. The broccoli offered texture and didn’t interfere with the salty, meaty flavours of the pepperoni. They came on an authentic thin crust with the perfect ratio of bread to cheese to sauce to toppings that simply works. After this, we were served the restaurant’s bestseller, the Linguine ai Frutti di Mare, a seafood pasta dish made with linguine pasta and the ‘fruits of the sea’: calamari, clams, shrimps and more, along with cherry tomatoes and basil. You can smell Tuscany in this seafood lover’s delight. The linguine offered a bite and was sturdy enough to match up to the textures of the seafood. We tried chicken and fish dishes for our main course. Pollo alla Crema di Porri e Paprika Dolce is the best Italian chicken dish I’ve ever eaten. The elements in the recipe – baked corn-fed chicken breast, braised endive, paprika and creamy potato – worked harmoniously. It is a simple dish, but not simplistic because the ingredients are skillfully put together. The Salmone allo Zafferano su Spinaci Novella combined the subtle flavours of saffron in a light, creamy sauce with the mild, delicate taste of the salmon. Even the coral hue of the fish sat perfectly against the lemony yellow of the sauce. The other elements on the plate were a baked purple potato, fried saffron risotto and aged garlic that we understand complements the flavours of the sauce. There was a side of baby spinach with toasted pine nuts too. The colours on this dish made it look like an artist’s masterpiece, only better. We ended the meal on a sweet note with Semifreddo alla Vaniglia con Crema di Cioccolato Caldo alle Nocciole, which was a vanilla parfait with gianduia hot chocolate. Its nutty flavours complemented the chocolate, making it as much a delight to eat as it was to watch the server pour the hot chocolate – elegant showmanship befitting for a dessert like this. We also had the 58

fact magazine

Spumone ai Frutti di Bosco, a mascarpone mousse that was light and airy, with wild berries and biscotti. The tartness of the berries balanced the sweetness of the mousse, and the biscotti added texture. We were surprised with yet another chef’s special, a chocolate dessert made with cream custard and hazelnut sauce, accompanied on the side with vanilla ice cream. Safe to say, La Pergola knows how to indulge its guests. ✤

DINING DELIGHT •

T

ucked away in Janabiya’s popular District 1 Mall, The Don Steakhouse is your typical steakhouse but with a strong personality. On entering, we noticed the dimly lit, warm toned interiors with rustic embellishments such as a chandelier with deer-antler-detail and a faux fireplace at the bar, all offering a mellow hunter-style vibe. The wall on the right had black cut outs of bulls and the one behind the bar was adorned with an enlarged trademark of the Steakhouse – a grill – and miniature trademarks were carved on the tables. Restaurant manager Chelsea told us that the grill shows that the steakhouse serves grilled food. The seating was straightforward with cushioned chairs and wooden tables. You can also dine al fresco if the weather permits. The Don Steakhouse takes pride in being the first Bahraini steakhouse and one that doesn’t charge an arm and a leg. I learned that they serve only fresh meat, not frozen, which is imported weekly – Wagyu from Australia and Certified Angus Beef (CAB) from Omaha, USA. The owner, Ali Al Khaja, who has been passionate about steaks from an early age, told me that he travelled far and wide in search of the perfect steak but none made the cut, which inspired him to open a homegrown steakhouse. We got started with the Quinoa Salad, which was light with fresh vegetables and creamy burrata cheese, combined with a refreshing orange dressing – the perfect accompaniment for our meaty meal. From the Grills section, we tried The Don lamb chops. Tender and juicy, they had an intensely tangy flavour from the traditional Bahraini lumee aswad – black lemon – tantalising the taste buds. I enjoyed them with and without the cooling mint fact magazine

• DINING DELIGHT sauce that seemed to slightly ease the tang. From the Skewer section we had the Wagyu Skewer that came with a side of salad with balsamic dressing. Firm and flavourful, the meat is ideally eaten smeared in creamy garlic sauce, which has a wasabi taste, and wrapped with flatbread – both served with the dish. Next came the leanest of cuts, the Medallion Tenderloin Wagyu, which Chelsea told us is preferred more by lady diners as it has less fat. You can mix and match the sauces per your preference – demi glaze, mushroom, chimichurri, black pepper – and choose between mashed potatoes and wedges as sides. Our medallions – fillet mignon – were cooked to medium, as were the rest of our steaks, which made the red, bloody and oily juices flow onto our plates as we sliced them. The medallions came with a pepper sauce that was savoury and had a kick to it – tread carefully – and crunchy coleslaw – a contrast of flavours, temperatures and textures. The meat on its own was sweet and succulent and we knew were tasting premium cuts here. After this, we ate the Wagyu Ribeye that was perfectly seared and the fat rendered, making it juicy. It paired wonderfully with the mushroom sauce that had a nutty, garlicky flavour. We smeared each bite with buttery mashed potatoes, that offered the perfect texture and flavour base for the meat. As the steaks flew in, so did the beverages. The Blue Lagoon Mojito came in a goblet – great to share. It was spritzy with hints of mint and lime. We also tried the blue lemonade and fruit margaritas – peach, blueberry and strawberry – all non-alcoholic – that washed down the grease, preparing us for the adventure ahead. Among the CAB cuts, we ate the short ribs blanketed with a buffalo-barbeque sauce. Watching our server pull the meat apart was satisfying – it fell off the bone. However, we couldn’t eat much of this dish as the sauce set our mouths on fire. Our server told us that the ribs can be ordered with just the barbeque sauce too – we’ll be taking her up on her offer the next time. That being said, we found the meat fatty, moist and streaky just as ribs ought to be. Next came the CAB Striploin, which we enjoyed with a silky, savoury demi glaze sauce, that had the flavours of a traditional gravy, and a side of steamed vegetables. Cooked to perfection and well-rested, it was juicy, oozing with flavour as we sliced through it.

62

fact magazine

Last but definitely not least, came the ‘King of all Meats’ – the CAB Tomahawk – a 1.2kg beast that was flambéed at our table, which added to the richness of the meat, deepening the flavours and making it slightly sweeter to taste, all while retaining its juices and tenderness. The herbal and earthy flavours of the chimichurri sauce heightened the taste of the tomahawk, making it the perfect ending note to our steakhouse sojourn. ✤

DINING ON HIGHER GROUND

Melissa Nazareth spent a laid-back afternoon at Higher Grounds Cafe, a hidden gem tucked away in the fast-developing district of Tubli. 64

I

f you want to enjoy a meal with friends or maybe a coffee by yourself or are looking for a quiet place to work from, head over to Higher Grounds Cafe in Tubli. We needed our GPS trackers to get there but with a little assistance, we easily found the place. You’d think people might not know about this hidden gem but the café has been around for three years. We went there on a weekday and saw many diners, mostly university students, working on their laptops whilst sipping on aromatic coffee and tucking into wholesome food. The café exhibited a warehouse-style interior with high ceilings. We sat on the ground floor, which had good natural lighting streaming in through the French windows. There were shelves stacked with books, plants and other knick-knacks. We took the stairs to the loft, which was far more spacious and had a concrete floor – a variation from the wood on the ground floor. A section of the loft had a chequered floor and turquoise tiled wall, adding to the rustic feel of the space. Black ducts, red pipes, a brick wall at the loft’s entrance, large spherical lamps and scaffolding-style shelves further enhanced the factory outlet feel. The foliage running across the ceiling added a pop of colour to the otherwise monotone interior. Our host and owner of the café, Narjes Bukannan explained that the cafe has been designed as a community space. There were board games and a selection of specially curated novels that can be rented for a refundable deposit. The seating featured sofas with a common coffee table and a mess-hall dining table. Offering many vegetarian and vegan options, the menu was divided into three broad sections – Breakfast, All Day and Drinks. You can order it all throughout the day. There’s a special menu fact magazine

for gluten-free options too. The coffee corner in the loft serves scrumptious plant-based cakes and desserts. Higher Grounds Cafe has a rotating selection of beans sourced from a Dubai-based specialty roaster. Currently, there's El Salvador Al Faro, a smooth and chocolatey washed roast, which they use for milk-based and espresso drinks, and the Ethiopia Wolichu, a complex and fruity natural omniroast that they serve as a pour over or an espresso. “We try to use organic and natural ingredients wherever we can,” said Narjes, who described the food as wholesome, natural and conscientious. On the menu, items are marked with an L-shaped symbol, which shows something's cooked with mostly local ingredients. The food, like the décor, was straightforward. We tucked into Hippie Pancakes, which are banana pancakes drizzled with coconut-almond butter and topped with fresh, chopped mangos. Served with pancake syrup, these fluffy pillows of goodness were a delight. The coconut-almond butter rendered a nutty flavour perfect against the slight acidity of the sweet mangos. Balancing this were the savoury elements of the Field Platter – slices of salty halloumi and creamy avocado and acidic cherry tomatoes roasted until slightly sweet. We also enjoyed the textures of the dish – toasted bread and jiggly poached eggs, oozing a golden river of yolk when cut. The dish was colourful with elements such as green wilted spinach and ruby red beetroot hummus, which made it visually appealing. The Katsu Curry came with crunchy breaded katsu chicken served over brown rice and smothered in a creamy curry sauce underlined with Asian spices – the ultimate comfort food. The Hot Cauli Tacos were a hit at our table. The cauliflower had a dash of sweetness but with a kick from the dynamite sauce, the greens 66

and avocado added texture, all wrapped in a soft taco and served with potato wedges, which you can replace with a basic salad. By this time, we were quite full – the portion sizes here are good and offer great value for your dinars. But, there was plenty more to come and we weren’t about to stop yet. Our Kimchi Miso Ramen was a light miso noodle broth with toppings. It’s usually served with your choice of three toppings including smoky chicken, charred broccoli, corn, tofu, mushroom and a boiled egg – we went for the first three. A powerhouse of flavours – salty, umami broth, sweet and sour fermented kimchi and smoked chicken and broccoli – and a riot of textures – chewy noodles and crunchy kimchi, this dish is a complete meal in itself. The Rosé Pasta Bake was basic with penne pasta accompanied by mushrooms and spinach, drenched in creamy rosé sauce, baked to perfection. It was immaculately served in a mini-Dutch oven – full points for presentation! We washed our food down with refreshing cold pressed juices such as Sunshine, Applegranate and All-Green. A concoction of fruit and vegetables, it was the perfect symphony to our medley of dishes. We look forward to returning for the cafe’s social dining event, The Platform, which is hosted once every few months. “The idea is to promote simple ingredients and build that into a fine-dining experience,” said Narjes, adding that they work with one local or Bahrain-based chef who plans a four- or five-course menu featuring one main ingredient. A supper club style event that’s open to all, it once again highlights the communal spirit of this quaint cafe. ✤

With a size of just 2.1km/sq and a small population of under 39,000 (12,261 of which are millionaires), this exclusive location is the second smallest sovereign state in the world after Vatican City. Although French is the official language, English, Italian and Monégasque are also spoken by various residents. This month, FACT magazine was invited by Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, to experience three days and nights at the world-renowned Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. Located on the escarpment at the base of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera, in the most famous administrative area of Monaco, Monte-Carlo; we could not have been more delighted over this invitation.

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo Built in 1864, this fairy-tale venue recently underwent a €250 million transformation, to ensure it remains one of the most glamourous and sought-after hotel destinations in the world. Housing 209 rooms, including a variety of suites and newly modernised bedrooms, this uber-exclusive hotel has been designed to satisfy those who are used to an extravagant lifestyle. With four lavish restaurants, a renowned lounge bar, a beautifully equipped wellness centre, celebrated cellars, a Rossano Ferretti Hair spa, along with the perfect central location, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo is equipped to guarantee the most lavish of hotel experiences. Upon arrival we were greeted like royalty with professional staff members immediately attending to our every need. After a hassle-free check in, I soon found myself in my opulent bedroom, marvelling at the spectacular view from my balcony, overlooking the port of Monaco. Calcutta marble, Tussar silk and Pima cotton are amongst the precious materials used throughout the spacious accommodation. Expertly crafted wooden furniture and antique mirrors, along with light and modern decorative touches, all added to the room’s upmarket character. The inclusion of complimentary fresh fruits and pastries added a nice welcoming touch to my arrival.

Evening Beverage at Le Bar Américain Making our way to the grand lobby for our evening aperitivo, we had to stop on several occasions to take in various aspects of the hotel’s magnificent design and décor. The Belle Époque lobby itself is awe-inspiring, with its gilded high ceiling, impressive glass dome, massive crystal chandelier and bronze equestrian statue. The open-air inner courtyard, Le Patio, is a perfect location to sit, relax and take in the splendour of the property. Entering Le Bar Américain, we felt as if we had been transported to the grandeur of the 1920s, with the bar itself looking like something out of F. • TRAVEL Cosy ambiance and the sounds of a live blues band are what greeted us at this premium venue. Soft, fashionable lighting reveals the use of refined wooden surfaces, burnished leather furniture, deluxe décor and top-quality finishes, all of which add to the upmarket charm. The bar’s new terrace offers remarkable views of Place du Casino, Casino de Monte-Carlo, and the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Dinner at Le Grill After one of the best refreshments to ever touch our taste buds, it was time to further stimulate our palates at one of Hôtel de Paris’ iconic restaurants, Le Grill. Located on the eighth floor of the hotel, this MichelinStarred restaurant features marine-inspired décor, Mediterranean gourmet cuisine and a view from the extended terrace that spans all the way to Corsica. The restaurant’s roof opens fully and the stars are only the beginning of Le Grill’s breathtaking evening view. Lights from the coasts of Monaco, France and Italy are all visible, along with the illuminated boats moored along the bay. Renowned chefs, Frank Cerutti and Patrick Laine, provide Le Grill with a wide assortment of meat and fish dishes, whilst Pastry Chef, Olivier Berger, has created an assortment of outstanding soufflés, a quintessential French culinary tradition in which we had to indulge. Thoroughly satisfied by our dining experience at Le Grill, it was time to retire to our wonderfully comfortable beds for the evening. A better night’s sleep would be hard to come by.

The Monaco Experience The following morning, we headed out for an early walk around Monaco, to experience as much of this enchanting location as we possibly could. We began our adventure with a stroll along the worldfamous Larvotto Beach in Monte-Carlo. After an hour of fresh sea air and phenomenal Rivera views, we turned our attention to the cities, taking in the exteriors of several famous monuments. These landmarks included the impressive Cathedral of Monaco built in 1875, the Oceanographic Museum, the Odeon Tower, The Louis II Stadium, The Grimaldi Forum, and the Monte-Carlo Casino; a venue we would become better acquainted with at a later stage. We ended off our architectural tour with perhaps the most impressive building of them all, The Prince’s Palace of Monaco, the official residence of the Sovereign Prince. Constructed as far back as 1191, this fortress has a long, rich history and we could have spent all day taking in the intricate details of its design. Before heading back to the hotel, we had to take a walk along a section of the almost 3.5km circuit of the Monaco Grand Prix. Considered to be the jewel in the crown of the Formula One calendar, this famous stretch of road offers stunning views of the yacht-packed harbour, as well as the grand buildings of Monte-Carlo. 76

With a plethora of scenic views, high-street shopping locations and exclusive dining venues, Monaco has plenty to offer all those willing to shell out the Euros.

The Princess Grace Suite After a quick yet scrumptious lunch at our new favourite aperitivo spot, Le Bar Américain, we headed for our specially organised tour of Hôtel de Paris’ world-famous Princess Grace Suite. The hotel’s Prince Rainier III and Monte-Carlo suites are two of the finest hotel suites ever built, however, the most exclusive and exceptional location in the hotel, and on the entire Riviera, is the new Princess Grace Suite. Inspired by the timeless elegance and delicate refinement of Princess Grace of Monaco, this 910sq/m suite is spread over two floors at the very top of the hotel. As we slowly made our way around the accommodation, taking in all the refined details, we appreciated the expertly crafted furniture, antique items and premium materials utilised throughout. Precious wood, mother-of-pearl, straw marquetry and agate panels all adorn this exceptional suite. The seventh floor contains a large bedroom, a bathroom with a deep tub, a steam shower and sauna, a beautifully crafted desk, two walk-in wardrobes, a spacious lounge and a private cellar. Making our way to the top of the exquisite marble staircase, the eighth floor revealed another gorgeous bedroom, a bathroom with tub and shower, as well as a living room and a dining room. From here, guests can access the sublime outdoor space. As we stood on the 440sq/m terrace, we marvelled at the majestic views of the Prince’s Palace and the Mediterranean Sea. A heated infinity pool, an outdoor lounge and a rare granite Jacuzzi, are all located in this deluxe outdoor area.

Casino de Monte-Carlo Still processing the sheer magnificence of the Princess Grace Suite, we soon found ourselves on route to one of the most exciting stops on our itinerary, dinner at Le Train Bleu, in the heart of the world-famous Casino de Monte-Carlo. Established in 1863, Casino de Monte-Carlo, with its Belle Epoque architecture, offers an exceptional selection of gaming and top-quality entertainment. One would struggle to find a more impressive and luxurious casino anywhere in the world. This famous venue is featured in not one but two Bond films: Never Say Never Again starring Sean Connery, and Goldeneye starring Pierce Brosnan. Frequented by celebrities from around the globe, this A-list destination could not be any more glamourous. As we made our way, wide eyed, towards Le Train Bleu, we attempted to take in all the sophistication and attention to detail poured into the building’s interior composition.

Dinner at Le Train Bleu At Le Train Bleu, one can expect nothing less than the very best of everything. With its elegant and refined layout, overlooking the Place du Casino, we once again found ourselves rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. The configuration of this exceptional venue is a reproduction of a premier restaurant car. All details, including the paintwork, wooden finishes and choice of colours, were selected to pay homage to the grandeur of Belle Epoque-era passenger trains. Offering a gourmet take on fine Italian cuisine, we were hugely impressed by the quality and presentation of their culinary offerings. Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo After an exceptional second night’s sleep, we made our way to yet another remarkable Monacan location, Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, for a day of health and pampering. This 6,600sq/m facility is dedicated to wellness, fitness and preventative health. It offers an assortment of treatments and is equipped with a wide range of technology designed to assist anti-ageing, slimming, health and performance. Thermes Marins houses a large terrace, a swimming pool, a steam room, a sauna, a bar/lounge area, an outdoor Jacuzzi, a solarium, a hammam and a panoramic fitness room, amongst other exceptional amenities.

Cryotherapy My first treatment was to be Cryotherapy. In preparation to enter the minus 110-degree room, I removed all metallic objects and ensured all my extremities were covered. Without this covering, frostbite would be a real concern and fingers or toes could be lost. To begin, I entered the first room set at minus 60 degrees. After acclimatising for around 15 seconds, I entered the second room, immediately feeling the impact of the minus 110-degree temperature. It is hard to explain the sensation of this type of environment. My breathing became akin to slow panting 78

and time seemed to stand still. After what felt like a few minutes, a voice over the microphone informed me that only 20 seconds had passed. Over the course of this three-minute treatment, I attempted to go into a mediative state, controlling the flow of my breathing. After what seemed like half an hour, my three minutes were up and I happily stepped out of the cold zone. As my body slowly returned to a fully functioning state, I could feel the rejuvenating effects of this unique and revitalising treatment.

Tailormade Massage My next experience was to be a ninety-minute, full body, deep tissue massage. Already deeply relaxed from the cryotherapy, my body welcomed the special attention given to its weary muscles. The quality of this massage was so outstanding that I fell asleep at around the 45-minute mark and only awoke once the professional rubdown was complete.

Lunch at Hirondelle To finish off our Thermes Marins expedition, we sat down at the venue’s health restaurant, Hirondelle, for a quick bite. Boasting beautiful views of both the Monaco Port and the Rock of Monaco, this sun-filled setting has a gourmet menu packed with low-calorie, tasty cuisine; perfect for a post-treatment meal.

Dinner at Buddha Bar After a few hours of deluxe down time at the hotel, it was time to satisfy our culinary cravings once more. As one of the most sought-after restaurants in Monaco, Buddha Bar Monte-Carlo is a spectacular venue showcasing a 7m-high ceiling, premium wood finishes, a gigantic Buddha statue, intricate cornices, beautiful gilding, and many other exceptional features. Chef Éric Guillemaud is responsible for the menu consisting of Asian culinary delights from Japan, Thailand, China, and Southeast Asia. He combines these delightful dishes with French culinary excellence, resulting in meals fit for royalty. Seated on one of the two open-air terraces, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner, along with the subtle blend of chillout, lounge and world music provided by local icon, DJ Papa.

Time to Say Au Revoir After a third night of blissful sleep, it was time to prepare for our journey home. As we packed our belongings and made our way to the lobby, we received plenty of well wishes from staff and soon found ourselves back in a premium Mercedes, making our way to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport. On the flight back home, we sat and reminisced over our once-in-a-lifetime adventure. From the exceptional Hôtel de Paris to all the spectacular views, meals and venues we were fortunate enough to experience, we could not have felt more satisfied and grateful to have undertaken this truly captivating journey. ✤

“The key inspiration is Jacques Majorelle,” explains Bunyamin Aydın, the brand’s Creative Director. “For this collection, I split his story in two: the first part is dedicated to his paintings of the people of the Kasbah. The second is inspired by his design of the iconic Majorelle Garden and its blue story.” This season’s bold retro-futuristic influence infuses the men’s and women’s collections with effervescence as the colour palette explores deep chromatics, such as Majorelle blue, Citroen yellow, and warm Tangerine, while the printed patterns take on a kaleidoscopic feel that leads us to self-exploration. “I felt like I needed a mystic journey that is going to make me forget about the here and now, and take me to tomorrow,” says Bunyamin. “The Majorelle Garden has always mesmerised me and when I took a deeper look into Marrakesh, I really felt the urge to cast my eye there this season.” The 1970s are omnipresent, flourishing across the collection in psychedelic prints and distorted tonal carpet motifs and trims, while flower lace lamination – inspired by Marrakesh’s iconic Majorelle Garden – adds a whimsical touch to urban silhouettes. Drawing from traditional tailoring techniques and cuts, as seen in djellabas, kaftans and shalwars, pieces across both men’s and women’s lines are fused with streetwear elements that give a contemporary twist to timeless garments. Flower and bird prints appear across embroidery on jersey, cupro and leather – each inspired by traditional handcrafted items, echoing the symbolic nature of a mystical journey and spiritual rebirth. “I live in duality, and I’m proud of my Turkish roots. Juxtaposition has always been a technique that reflects my upbringing in Germany. Therefore, the collection is a reflection of duality, where soul-searching meets a psychedelic-inspired journey throughout Eastern cultures,” adds Bunyamin. ✤

BIG SCREEN The Batman Need to Know:

The Batman is a 2022 action movie and the newest film about this iconic character based on the DC comics stories. From Batman's first appearance in DC comics in 1939, this is a character that has been used many times, however, this latest motion picture feels very different from previous depictions. The casting is incredible, as well as the soundtrack and cinematography.

Directors: Matt Reeves Cast: Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright

Everything about this movie was hauntingly beautiful; you'll be in awe as you watch each perfectly crafted scene.

Turning Red Need to Know:

Turning Red is a 2022 Disney - Pixar animation following a young girl turning 13 who finds herself drifting from her mother as her interests expand. It's the typical coming-of-age story with a major twist. This movie follows the style of many previous Pixar offerings, with cute animation and a light-hearted, fun story.

Director: Domee Shi Cast: Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ava Morse

Why Is It Worth Watching?

In this movie, we follow Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), as he attempts to rid Gotham City of crime and corruption. During his purge of criminals, he comes across a grizzly series of murders that seem to be connected to him and the corruption in the city. The storyline is well thought out and executed as it keeps a strong grip on the audience's attention. The cinematography and visuals were also jaw-dropping, including the consistent use of dark colours and oranges and reds that connected all the scenes perfectly. The perspective of the movie and the dim lighting also effectively created tension – as the camera often puts the audience in the characters' places, which only adds thrill to it. The casting was also spectacular as Robert Pattinson embodies the stoic and nihilistic Batman to perfection, and Paul Dano's depiction of the Riddler was flawless and spine chilling. The soundtrack is the final performer in this incredible film, and you will never again be able to hear Nirvana’s Something in The Way without feeling chills. Everything about this movie was hauntingly beautiful; you'll be in awe as you watch each perfectly crafted scene. This was such a wonderful movie to watch. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The movie follows the 13-year-old Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) as she discovers her ability to turn into a giant red panda when her emotions get out of control, something that has been passed down in her family for generations. During this tumultuous time, she drifts from her family as she wishes to be her own person and not the perfect daughter her mother expects her to be. This is an adorable story about growth, friendship and family. The animation is incredible, with each character being extremely expressive and the movements being fluid. The backgrounds and details are also well animated, with many references to Toronto, where the story is placed. And with the movie being set in 2002, there is a lot of 2000s nostalgia. From Mei Lee's Tamagotchi to the girl's boy band obsession. A perfect joyful film to watch with family or by yourself.

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Local talent makes a mark.

B

ahraini artist Eskander Dawani is climbing the ladder of success and slowly making it to the top tier of creative professionals in the Kingdom, as his work features for the third consecutive year at the 46th Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, running till the end of June. “It means a lot for me to be part of the exhibition. I feel very lucky. And people have started to notice my work and there’s a bit of a buzz, which is always nice. So yeah, it’s kind of exciting,” he says. Harbouring quite an unusual style, Eskander’s paintings mainly depict female figures with amplified physical features and dark themes. “I just love them, the expressions. They stare back at you, you know? They're quite defined and they kind of jar you and make you a bit uncomfortable on purpose. With my work there’s a lot of terror and anger and these strong emotions. And my portraits usually have a flat background so you focus on the actual face as opposed to what’s going on behind,” he adds with the wall behind him covered in his paintings. 86

fact magazine

The half-English half-Bahraini artist started drawing from a young age. The earliest piece he remembers is a copper plate attached to cardboard that he etched into while in school at St. Christopher’s, creating an image of a: “kid covering his face and sitting on a barrel, with a dog next to him. I remember I was just messing about with this plate and a thing you poke with. I still have that piece. I guess I’ve always liked to be creative.” The artist, who has worked with mediums across the range such as acrylic, oil pastels and pen and ink, cites Malcolm T. Liepke, Jean Michel-Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Banksy, Cindy Sherman and Jack Vettriano as some of his sources of inspiration, the last of which is a Scottish artist who started his artistic career in Bahrain, where he had his first solo exhibition. The artist is also a poet who has written several notebooks of poetry. He started in the early ‘90s while studying at the American College of London after picking up a book by singer and poet Leonard Cohen. “I bought a book from Tower Records in Piccadilly, London. It used to be my favourite shop. I’d spend hours there just like looking at all these albums. I saw this Leonard Cohen book and I bought it and I was immediately hooked. He's just phenomenal,” he explains. The painter recalls his mum, who was a great source of inspiration. She dreamt of becoming an actress and had just gotten accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London but got married instead and came to Bahrain. “There was that regret with her that, you know, ‘What if I took the road not taken?’. She loved the theatre; I’d go with her. And I think she just wished that maybe she could’ve been an actress. She’s part of the reason I went into art and she was very supportive of me. She was always behind me the whole way,” he reflects. “Being from a business family it was a bit daunting to take another route.”

ARTS & CULTURE •

Eskander started concentrating more on his art two years ago, developing darker paintings and experimenting with abstract themes, instigated by the passing of his father and the onset of the pandemic. “Grief… isn’t fun,” he says. “It hit me quite hard. I just immersed myself into my work to try and not think so much about everything. Sometimes when you’re not in a good place, you have to try and trick your brain into doing something positive. “I mean, over the years you have to deal with stuff. Some traumatic stuff, relationships, just things going bad, so, for me, I work through that with my art.” Eskander tries to create a piece or two every day and posts his work on Instagram, which he says keeps him grounded. “It’s like a diary, in some ways. And I try to create something different to stay fresh because us artists are always terrified that we’ve peaked already and there isn’t much else to learn. That’s why I write as well because I’m learning every day.” His original plan after art school was to go to Croatia to help refugees. However, he ended up coming back to Bahrain. He worked on and off in Al Jazeera Supermarket, owned by his family, and a few coffee shops, but is now committed to his artistic practice and being with his family. “I’m kind of happy the way I got to where I am,” he says. “I learnt a lot of life lessons. I’ve got a family, kids, my place here, good friends. I’ve got all my necessities that I need. And I’m very happy.” When asked what advice he would give to aspiring artists, he says: “Don’t worry about what people think. The important thing is just to be creative, not for anyone else but for yourself. “The more you work at something, even if you're taking reference, the more you work, the more you advance and get your own voice. So, sometimes you have to start at the bottom, maybe plagiarising in some sense, but as you move on, you create your own thing.” Eskander is hoping to host another solo exhibition soon and is also working on a novella with a fellow artist Marc Zakaria that he calls his ‘own Catcher in the Rye’. ✤
