t’s hard to believe that we’re half way through the year already. On the one hand it’s like ‘Where did the time go?’ while, on the other, it feels as if Covid has been with us forever and will never go away – particularly with numbers still rising.

With that in mind, our lead feature this month is all about well-being (p25).

It’s something we take a look at every year and usually we include new trends, classes, leisure wear etc. But, this time round, we’re addressing how the pandemic has affected our mental, physical and spiritual health and offering some tips and advice to get you back to feeling your best; I hope it helps. If the ‘rona has left you in holiday mood, we’ve got you covered with both a staycation at the island’s newest resort (p72) and a great look at some fabulous

places to visit in Italy (p76). I’m actually quite jealous – I didn’t get to experience either of these journeys. Maybe next time, if I’m lucky. Elsewhere, you’ll find our thoughts on not just one but two new motors – time for all you petrolheads to get a touch of the green-eyed monster! In the dining section, we rejoice at the return of brunches (which will hopefully be back on the menu by the time you’re reading this). And try out The Food Hall Est 2020, a new venue where you’ll find six of the island’s foodie faves all under one roof. In the Listen Up section you’ll find lots of Bahrain-centric news snippets – my favourites are the pictures from Wagalag (p14), but then that’s no big surprise since I’m a devoted dog mum. And, of course, we have our regular round-ups of books, movies, music, fashion and more.

Wagalag pics by @aldahaenphotography (Shaikha Aldahaen)

HAPPY HOUNDS Who let the dogs out? Wagalag did! If you’re a dog owner in Bahrain, you have no doubt decried the lack of good places to have fun and socialise your pet, safely. When Latifa Algosaibi moved to the island from Italy a year ago, she encountered just that problem and decided to take action. She invited fellow dog lovers to meet at her home and soon Wagalag – a doggy community dedicated to building relationships between our furry friends – was born. She explains: “I moved to Bahrain from Italy with my Great Dane, Nux, exactly one year ago. I was worried that she would get depressed in Bahrain as she was used to European life; always going to dog parks and always by my side. So, I decided to invite people who have dogs over to my back yard to hang out. People started coming regularly and both Nux and I made friends in Bahrain! Our first Wagalag event was Nux's birthday last June.” Now, the group meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6pm to 8pm in Latifa’s garden in Janabiya (subject to Covid restrictions). Dogs and owners get together for some off-leash fun and exercise and Latifa also organises events such as markets, workshops and live music. Wagawalks, where owners can bring along their pets for some social exercise, take place weekly at locations around the island, depending on the season and weather. Under normal circumstances, attendance can be up to 30 humans per meetup, though this has been reduced in line with Covid rules, and dogs of all different sizes and breeds are welcome. Latifa says: “Back in Europe, dog parks allow all sizes and breeds. That is what Nux and I have been used to, 14

fact magazine

so I decided to allow all dogs at Wagalag – no sizeism, no breedism!” The only requirement is that dogs must be vaccinated, which is checked at the initial registration. Not surprisingly, the initiative has received a warm welcome among the doggy community. “It's been a lot of fun!” says Latifa. “It's beautiful seeing people from different walks of life getting to know each other through their dogs.” And, asked what the future holds for Wagalag? She cheerfully responds: “Hopefully more events and fun gatherings, as I would love to support the music and art scene in Bahrain.” ✤

SPEAK UP After a two-year break, the Indian Ladies Association (ILA) is bringing back its spoken English classes which aim to enhance basic communication skills for low-income Indian nationals in the Kingdom. The course is one of ILA’s many community outreach projects. Individuals with minimum qualifications of a high school diploma will be provided two months of training volunteered by skilled teachers. The classes will be held twice a week and participants receive a certificate upon successful completion. The main objective of this project is to help participants acquire basic communication skills in English, which will enable them to become more effective socially as well as at work. The classes cover basic spoken English, communication, social skills and etiquette. Swasti Mehta, who has been involved with the project from the outset, said: “In keeping with the famous clichéd but absolutely time-tested saying that give a man a fish to eat, you feed him once, but teach a man to fish and you feed him every day for life, the ILA started the Speak Easy Programme in the year 2000. This was part of the community outreach programme for low-income workers. “English being the international language of business, the idea behind it was to bring the workers to such a level of proficiency in the language where they would be able to conduct, with very little effort, the daily business of life and communicate coherently and with confidence in English. The Speak Easy programme, over the years, has become one of the most popular and sought-after training programmes among the Indian workers. It has benefitted thousands of workers, be it by improving their overall chances of getting promotions, facing interviews confidently, getting better job opportunities and helping immensely in the job market. “Apart from the language skills, training is also provided on their personality development, hygiene and health. The curriculum is designed in such a way that all these 16

fact magazine

aspects are incorporated naturally. Apart from the fullytrained faculty, regular interactive sessions with doctors and lawyers too are arranged to provide knowledge of healthcare and labour laws and the support that is available to them. “At the end of the two-month course, it’s a pleasure to see these very hard-working people who want to better their station in life, walk tall and confident. They have been helped to overcome the language barrier which kept them from higher goals, better job opportunities and progress. Through the Speak Easy programme we don’t just touch a worker but a whole family and it’s an extremely satisfying and immensely gratifying experience.” A nominal fee of BD5 is charged for enrolment into this course and application forms will be available at the official website of ILA: https://ilabahrain.org ✤

COOL SHOWERS FROM SUN POWER Resigned to boiling hot showers until October? It doesn’t have to be that way with this eco-friendly water cooler from Silent Power. As the temperatures rise to the full, blistering heat of a Bahraini summer, we all know that, from about May onwards, the prospect of a cool shower is but a distant memory unless you perform your ablutions well before the sun comes up or sometime around midnight! In search of a solution, and a somewhat less laborious option than adding ice to the, otherwise scalding, bath, we discovered a water cooler that not only does the job but also saves you money by using power provided by a solar panel mounted on the water tank. The SP-250 from Silent Power is a new Bahrainconceived and made innovation that cools the water in your tank to a comfortable 28-30 degrees and, because it’s solar powered, it saves on electricity compared to any similar device. Silent Power founder, Bahraini Mohammed Abdellaal, told FACT: “I started researching solar power back in 2013 and we created this here in Bahrain. It’s one-of-a-kind in the world working on this type of technology. “We officially launched in 2018 and business is booming. To be honest, I was surprised at how well things went in the first year and it gave us good confidence in our product. We are also now selling well in Saudi Arabia and the UAE and are negotiating to bring the SP-250 to Kuwait and Oman. I’m also in the process of taking a patent for it, so we can expand further in the future.” 18

fact magazine

With temperatures this year already hitting some of the highest ever recorded, it’s no surprise that Mohammed’s products are, figuratively, flying off the shelves. And, it has been pointed out, with hygiene now more important than ever, who can resist the allure of a cool shower in the middle of the day? All without damaging the planet with electrically powered batteries or pumps. Sounds like a win-win to us. ✤

Expo 2020 Dubai is the first World Expo to take place in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region and runs from October 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. Of course, Bahrain is one of 192 countries taking part and Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) is inviting volunteers to become part of the Kingdom’s stunning pavilion. Volunteers are integral to the success of all BACAsponsored events, and their contribution and knowledge will be the pulse of the pavilion. Passion and energy are the underlying traits for all prospective volunteers, as each person will be representing the Kingdom as a whole. As spokespeople and representatives of Bahrain, volunteers will undergo a short induction about the Expo and Bahrain’s history, heritage and culture. Great communication skills and sociability are also valuable traits as the volunteers will act as guides to the Pavilion, which is running under the theme of ‘Opportunity’. They will be expected to offer authentic insights to a diverse, international crowd. If you are bilingual, multilingual or have a working 20

re you tired of working from home or, if you’re unfortunate, not working at all? Maybe you’re struggling with the demands of home schooling while trying to hold down a demanding job? Perhaps you’ve piled on what are jokingly (or not so jokingly) referred to as Covid Kilos – we know how it feels to dislike what you see

in the mirror but to trivialise your own concerns in the awareness that so many are having a much harder time. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no doubt that the last 18 months has taken a toll on all of us, in one way or another. We take a look at ways toward recovery from the malaise you may not even realise (or fully admit) you’re experiencing. fact magazine

MIND

It’s Okay To Not Be Okay was a Korean TV drama that popped onto the international radar in summer 2020 when, let’s face it, we all still thought, or hoped, the pandemic would be over by Christmas. It’s an emotional, romantic drama whose main characters are each battling their own mental demons. At the time, online publication thenerddaily.com said: “At a time when mental health issues are rising alongside the global pandemic, a romance centred around mental illness and trauma might just be the catharsis you need.” And by October 10 last year, ‘It’s OK not to be OK’ was a highly visible catchline trending across social media on World Mental Health Day. But, how much notice did we take? How often, when asked “how are you?” do we still reply “fine” even when we know we’re really anything but? And, if we do reach out to friends or family, are we met with the common advice to: think positive, be grateful things aren’t worse etc. etc? This is known as toxic positivity, a term used by Dr. Jaime Zuckerman, a licensed clinical psychologist and trained cognitive behaviour therapist, who describes it as: “The assumption, either by one’s self or others that, despite a person’s emotional pain or difficult situation, they should only have a positive mindset or — my pet peeve term — ‘positive vibes’.” So, remind yourself as often as you need to that it really is OK to 26

fact magazine

not be OK. And, once you’ve gained that important insight, it’s time to take action. The first move is to see a doctor. If you are clinically depressed, you may well need ongoing medical help to fully recover. But, if you are, as is more common, experiencing very real (but nonclinical) depression, anxiety, extreme stress or other mental health issues, there are resources available to help and plenty of ways you can also help yourself. Exercise is one way in which you can take back control. According to Better Health, from the Department of Health in Victoria State, Australia, together with Sane Australia, people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional well-being, and lower rates of mental illness. Now, if you’ve spent several weeks, or even months, languishing in your bed or just carrying on with life but feeling generally below par, exhausted and pretty miserable, suddenly going out and running a marathon is clearly not an option. But getting up early to take a short walk is something all of us can manage and, even better, it’s free. No, it won’t solve all your problems, but it will get your day off to a good start giving you a sense of achievement, making it easier to get a handle on your other issues. Increasing movement is also likely to improve sleep quality – a key component of mental health.

COVER STORY •

Talk it out. If you’ve been avoiding friends and family, whether because you’ve felt the need to isolate for physical health reasons or you’ve withdrawn mentally; take the plunge and get back in touch. It could be a call or conversation with a loved one – this may feel even harder if your withdrawal has been via emotional rather than physical distance – a simple text can open a whole exchange. Chances are, they’ve been worrying about you and will be glad for the chance to offer support. Arranging to meet a friend can be just as beneficial. You don’t have to get into deep conversation, unless you feel comfortable doing so, but just the act of connection can go a long way to making you feel better. It’s also something that helps restore a sense of normality. Even a casual coffee-shop exchange with a stranger can give a great sense of achievement.

Brain Food Mental health professionals agree that specific nutrients play a role in not only treating depression and similar disorders but also have a preventative function. Specific vitamins and minerals to incorporate into the diet include: Omega-3 Fatty Acids – found in foods such as fish and flaxseed and also available as dietary supplements.

mindfulness ideas, which can be found at https://www.nhs.uk/ mental-health/self-help/ and, in Bahrain, check out U Matter for local mental health resources.

Vitamin B6 – found in poultry, some fish, soya beans, oats, bananas and peanuts.

Seeking further help too is always an option. The UK’s National Health Service has some great free tips such as simple

Vitamin A – found in eggs, dark green leafy vegetables and orange and yellow vegetables or fruits.

Vitamin B12 – found in mainly animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs but also available in supplement form. Vitamin C – found in citrus fruits, peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants, broccoli, potatoes and many other fruits and vegetables. Iron – found in dark green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, tofu, cashews and whole-grain breads. Folate – found in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, leafy green vegetables, peas, chickpeas and kidney beans. Magnesium – found in green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Potassium – found in bananas, oranges, cantaloupe, honeydew, apricots, grapefruit, cooked spinach and broccoli, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Selenium – found in most meats, fish and shellfish as well as eggs and nuts, particularly Brazil nuts. Thiamine – found in whole-grain foods, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, legumes, green leafy vegetables and orange and tomato juices. So, we’ve already mentioned the dreaded Covid Kilos. And, though the name might sound funny, we really do know it’s no joke. The problems brought on by increased weight are many. Aesthetics is the first that comes to mind – your clothes getting ever tighter is a pretty miserable feeling, not to mention expensive when you have to go up a size or two. But, it’s not all about looks. Weight gain can also affect your joints, heart, blood pressure — the list is seemingly endless. There’s also the risk of ongoing fatigue and, in extreme cases, sleep disturbance which leads to a vicious circle in which you know you need to exercise, but you’re just too flippin’ tired! Now, admittedly, the above (apart from the tighter than skin-tight jeans) can all be experienced without significant weight gain. Perhaps you’re experiencing age-related deterioration, and no, this doesn’t only happen to ‘old’ people. According to Harvard Medical School ‘Age-related muscle loss, called sarcopenia, is a natural part of ageing. After age 30, you begin to lose as much as three to five per cent, per decade’. You may also have let your usual exercise regime slide a little due to the challenges of the last year, particularly if you’ve been tied to your home office or dining table. Whatever the reason you’re not feeling great right now, check out these ideas to help you get back where you belong; to your best. 28

BODY FOOD Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But, trust us, it can be hard to get into the habit of mindful, or intuitive, eating. In a useful piece for healthline.com, Adda Bjarnadottir, a registered nutritionist, offers various suggestions to help you achieve mindfulness around food. These include eating slowly without distractions; learning to distinguish between true hunger and non-hunger triggers for eating, such as boredom or stress; and engaging your senses by noticing colours, smells, sounds, textures and flavours. To learn more about intuitive eating, check out this great piece by Stephanie Dodier, clinical nutritionist and intuitive eating expert at Going Beyond The Food. https://thriveglobal.com/ stories/intuitive-eating-made-simple-a-step-by-step-guide/ And, of course, as with everything these days, there’s an app for that. Here are three of the best we’ve found to help you get into the groove: Peace With Food offers the option to choose your notification frequency, check-in throughout the day to track your hunger levels, and again before you eat for encouragement to taste, go slow and enjoy. Am I Hungry was created by Michelle May MD to guide you through the whole mindful eating cycle. In The Moment works to identify how you feel before eating, whether that be hungry, sad, bored etc., and offers guidance strategies for each feeling.

If those covid kilos are really bothering you, we’ve got news for you. We all know what they say about diets, right? They simply don’t work. You restrict yourself to lose weight (and that bit works) but as soon as you go back to eating ‘normally’ those extra kilos pile back on. Makes sense when you think about it. Nobody wants to live a life of permanent deprivation! What’s needed is a fundamental change in the way you think about and interact with food. There are no good or bad foods. You don’t need to cut anything out or eat loads of anything. You simply have to be mindful of what you’re eating. This is a fundamental of many weight-loss ‘treatments’ from hypnotherapy to tapping and even, believe it or not, weightloss surgery. They all work on the basic principle of making you think about what you’re actually putting into your body. So, what exactly is mindfulness and how does it work? Writing for Food Insight, dietician Alyssa Pike defines it as: “A quality of consciousness that is characterised by continually attending to one’s moment-to-moment experiences, thoughts and emotions with an open, non-judgmental approach.” Or, as internationally renowned hypnotherapist Paul McKenna would have it in his I Can Make You Thin programme, just follow these four golden rules ● When you are hungry, eat. ● Eat what you want, not what you think you should. ● Eat consciously and enjoy every mouthful. ● When you think you are full, stop eating. 30

SOUL Many of us think that if we can get our minds and bodies sorted, everything will be just hunky dory. But there’s more to wellness than meets the eye. Yes, we’re talking about the soul. Now, whether you think of this as a defined concept, as believed by some religions, or whether you understand it as an emotional and spiritual entity, there’s no doubt that it is just as important as mental and physical health. If you’re feeling somewhat disconnected, maybe in need of direction, or just some downtime in which to relax and really listen to your inner self, there are therapies to help. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a ‘universal energy’ is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing. It may sound a bit off-the-wall, but it’s thought that, at the simplest, most obvious level, Reiki treatment helps lessen the impact of stress, releasing tension from the entire system. And, in a change in the perceived attitude to alternative therapies, it is now being used in many hospitals around the world. Crystal Therapy or Crystal Healing is an alternative medical technique in which crystals and other stones are used to cure ailments and protect against disease. Proponents of this technique believe that crystals act as conduits for healing allowing positive, healing energy to flow into the body as negative, disease-causing energy flows out. There has been

an upsurge in popularity in recent years, but this therapy is not recognised by the medical profession in general. Qigong, which is sometimes spelled Chi-Kung (pronounced chee-gung), is the study and practice of cultivating vital lifeforce through various techniques, including: breathing techniques. postures. meditations. guided imagery. Pranic Healing is all about using the body’s life force to heal the body energy. This therapy works specifically on the energy of the body or aura of a person. In this therapy, energy is used to clean the toxic from the body, thus accelerating the healing physical process. Yoga is the great all-rounder, good for the mind and soul, great for the body. The word itself is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning 'to join' or 'to yoke' or 'to unite'. As per Yogic scriptures the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body, human and nature. All of these therapies are available in Bahrain, some more widely than others. A quick Google search will lead you towards numerous practitioners, but it is always good if you can work on personal recommendations. So, if you find a therapist you are interested in, it’s always worth asking if they can put you in touch with previous participants to find out what they have to say.

THE FERRARI ROMA Ferrari have outdone themselves once again with their newest coupé.

• ISLAND RIDES

F

or us at FACT Magazine there are few activities we enjoy as much as getting behind the wheel of a new model motorcar and taking it out for a spin on the tarmac. Despite being fortunate enough to have experienced a vast array of cars produced by a variety of brands, ranging from the respected to the highly revered, we have never had the chance to get our hands on a Ferrari. That is, until now. This month, thanks to the exceptional team at Ferrari Centre Bahrain, we received the rare opportunity to thoroughly inspect and test drive the new Ferrari Roma and believe us when we tell you, it was an occasion we will never forget. It took all of three seconds for us to fall completely in love with Ferrari’s latest coupé. From the moment we laid eyes on its flawless outline, we couldn’t get enough of this new Roma. Its signature Italian styling is characterised by its clean and symbiotic forms as well as its harmonious proportions and elegant volumes. Both the bodyshell and chassis have been redesigned, in fact, 70 per cent of its components are entirely new. The design of the front end is unique with a striking new radiator grille concept having been created. Full-LED adaptive headlights are traversed by a horizontal light strip that leads the eye to the subtle prancing horse badge, set like a jewel at the front and centre of the car’s exterior. Long, ultra-sleek lines sweeping from bonnet to boot highlight the shapely flanks and compact, set-back cabin. At the rear, the wraparound screen incorporates an active aero device, whilst the twin taillight assembly and dual twin exhaust system add further touches of class to this already magnificent design. Once inside the Roma’s cabin, we were immediately struck by the novel interior developed by the master craftsmen at Ferrari. Two separate cells have been created, one for the driver and one for the passenger, both of which include seating that is supportive and comfortable. This dual cockpit concept utilises the entire cabin space and not just the dashboard, as was the case with previous models. The perfectly designed steering wheel houses haptic controls for all of the vehicle’s main commands, ensuring the driver does not have to take his hands off the wheel or eyes off the road. A 16-inch digital instrument cluster provides all required information, while the 8.4-inch screen of the central display, along with a new passenger display, are remarkably intuitive and easy to navigate. Upon thorough inspection of the materials, trimmings and finishings throughout the interior, it was obvious that no expense has been spared in the creation of this outstanding vehicle and we felt like movie stars just sitting in the showroom. One of the most exciting moments of the day was when we engaged the ignition. The sound of the V8-90° turbo engine brought an instant smile to everyone present and we felt like children experiencing something magical for the very first time. With an overall displacement of 3,855cc, a maximum power output of 456kW at 5,750-7,500rpm and a maximum torque of 760Nm at 3,000-5,750rpm, this coupé is a beast to say the very least. This newly designed Roma can surge from 0-100km/h in a ridiculous 3.4 seconds, from 0-200km/h in just 9.3 seconds and boasts a top speed of 320km/h! With all of this power on offer, Ferrari have included a state-ofthe-art vehicle dynamics system to ensure complete control at all

times. This includes the Side Slip Control 6.0 with five-position manettino and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer which controls yaw angle by hydraulically adjusting brake pressure at the callipers. We found the suspension, handling and overall drivability of the Roma to be nothing less than exceptional and we have never had more fun driving a motorcar in our lives. Needless to say, we were stared at wherever we went as all onlookers seemed to want to get a better look at this exquisite new offering from Ferrari. The fact that the designers have included a host of safety features throughout the vehicle only adds to the comfortability factor and allows you to relax and enjoy the phenomenal driving experience all the more. ✤

THE ALL-NEW BMW 1 SERIES

The new 1 Series is a worthy addition to the premium compact model segment. 44

fact magazine

BEHIND THE WHEEL •

B

MW have, without a doubt, produced an abundance of unforgettable motor vehicles over the years and we at FACT magazine have had the privilege of test driving several models in the past. This month, compliments of the great team at Euro Motors, we once again found ourselves behind the wheel of a new Bimmer, this time in the form of the freshly released BMW 120i M. What we noticed first about the 120i was the signature BMW kidney grille. Having been increased in size, it now has a far greater presence with the two kidneys merging in the middle for the very first time. This new design replaces the grille’s classical bars with a prominent three-dimensional mesh design, giving the vehicle a contemporary feel. The BMW 1 Series’ redefined athletic appearance ensures the flanks are not only prominent, but that they clearly define the BMW shark nose. This feature is emphasised by the crisp and precise lines that run from front to rear of the immaculate exterior. The headlights too have been redesigned and now exude a fresh and youthful feel. Once inside the 1 Series, we were surprised by the amount of room on offer. This BMW is high enough to ensure slipping into the vehicle is not a task and the seats that welcome you are both comfortable and supportive. The knee room for rear passengers has been increased by 33 millimetres, the headroom by 19 millimetres and the elbow room by 12 millimetres, ensuring a more pleasant travelling environment. In the front, the two occupants enjoy an extra 42 millimetres of elbow room space, an improvement that is definitely noticeable. Throughout the interior, all the materials, trimmings and finishes are of a premium quality fact magazine

45

• BEHIND THE WHEEL and the layout of the cockpit is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. In fact, all of the internal elements of this vehicle are well designed and functional, including the easy to navigate infotainment and sound systems. A great feature of the 120i is the spacious luggage compartment. Despite the 1 Series being a compact model, it can carry a decent amount of cargo. We managed to place two large luggage bags and two smaller hand luggage bags inside the boot without too much trouble. As the flagship model of the 1 Series, the BMW 120i M Sport Package is equipped with a four-cylinder petrol unit powered by BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that generates an output of 140 kW/190hp. This, coupled with an eight-speed steptronic transmission, allows this model to accelerate from 0 – 100km/h in an impressive 7.0 seconds and to produce a top speed of 230km/h. This vehicle also boasts a cutting-edge chassis system along with innovative technologies. These combined with all key driving dynamics components and control system, imbue the 1 Series with an increase in agility and improved overall drivability. As we made our way along the roads, we enjoyed the silence of the ride, watching the kilometres roll by, always feeling in complete control of the experience. With an array of safety and driver assist features, you can rest assured that the master craftsmen at BMW have created a motor vehicle with the wellbeing of you and your loved ones as their utmost priority. All-in-all we found the all-new 1 Series to be an impressive new offering from BMW. With its modern look, comfortable interior and ample performance capabilities, we can only encourage you to take it for a spin. ✤

Wolfram

WaterBalance

We all know that Middle Eastern summers are blisteringly hot but, let’s face it, that doesn’t stop some hardy souls deciding to take the rays in pursuit of a tan. Then there’s all the watersports we so love. From boating to jet skis, paddle boards and everything in between, it all adds up to lots of hours in the sun. Sunburn is not just painful, it’s also horribly damaging to our skin. At best we end up looking unattractively leathery. At worst, skin cancers, such as the deadly melanoma, can raise their ugly heads as a result of overexposure. That’s where Wolfram comes in. It not only has a seriously cool name, that puts us in mind of a Nordic rock band, but it can also help to save you from sunburn. The Wolfram Sun Exposure Reference App calculates exactly how long you can be out without burning based on your complexion, location, time and the SPF you’re using. It also provides a UV forecast for wherever you are.

OK, we have a bit of a theme going on here. In the scorching heat it’s hard to drink enough water to stay hydrated. And, much as we wish it were otherwise, multiple coffees, cans of soda and anything else you usually kid yourself counts as hydration, is simply not good enough. For hydration in our summer temperatures, water is essential, and lots of it. Whether you drink it at room temperature or straight from the fridge with ice and a slice, a healthy daily intake of good old H2O is what we all need. If like us, however, you are prone to forgetting or just topping up your cup of Joe and ignoring your body’s dehydrated cravings, then perhaps you should try WaterBalance. With this app you can calculate how much water you need to drink and get gentle reminders. The only thing you have to do when the alarm goes off is chug!

52

fact magazine

5 OVER 5 •

Why did you choose the hospitality industry? Where do I start, in the hospitality world no two days are alike. You will meet new people and new challenges each day and the chances of a hospitality job becoming mundane are very rare. I grew up in a hotelier family and from a young age, I already knew that I wanted to work in the hotel industry. Also because I love the interaction I get from people; it is something that makes me happy as I am an extrovert and I always look forward to meeting new faces from different cultures and backgrounds. The idea of having the opportunity to create an experience for a guest or a colleague fascinates. What makes this industry so exciting is the way digital technology is transforming how we choose, buy – then share – our travel and hospitality experiences. What does being an area GM entail, is there a lot of crossover between the properties you are responsible for? If I were to put it down in a sentence, it would be to plan, coordinate and manage all business operations to achieve corporate goals. One of the main objectives would be sustaining current market position and growing market share for IHG hotels in my region. I want to ensure all the seven hotels (five in KSA Eastern Province and two in Bahrain) are aligned with the corporate goals and initiatives. I would love to incorporate the culture of supporting sister hotels by sharing best practices, sharing leads and thus increasing purchasing power. This comes at a very interesting time and I am excited to understand the KSA market and utilise the benefits of cross selling properties across the borders. I am looking forward to meeting the teams and working on a cohesive culture.

What is your management style, is there one core element you would say is crucial for success? We need to be bold, we need to simplify things and we need to operate with speed. To operate at the pace required today, gaining clarity about the role and purpose of leadership is vital. We also need to have principles to guide us. In times of uncertainty, making decisions and moving forward is a great way to remove fear and anxiety. Having a set of principles helps to remind us what we should be doing. Whilst the role of a leader is to create a high-performance environment where success is inevitable, operating effectively in a digital world is really about people. One of my main focuses is development. Give colleagues the space to grow, permission to fail and opportunity to shine. Leadership is all about energy, frequency, resonance, and people. Therefore, the purpose of leadership is to awaken possibility in people to deliver extraordinary results. What do you like to do when you get time off (if ever)? I am really passionate about boxing and the other sport I enjoy is kite surfing, though I don’t do it as often. One of the main reasons I got into these activities was setting a goal for myself to learn something new and start pushing boundaries. It helps with the adoption of growth mind set and allows you to stay motivated and enjoy the process of learning something new. If you don’t have a summer sport, seriously take up kitesurfing. It's just so much fun, I absolutely love it. If you weren’t a hotel GM, what would you be? Probably a pilot. I always had a fascination with travelling the world, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. I guess, in a way, I am accomplishing all of that now, being an hotelier! ✤ fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

Who is your cooking inspiration and why? I'm currently inspired by Daniel Humm of Eleven Madison Park for taking the leap and doing something very uncommon in the fine-dining scene. He has turned the spotlight towards sustainable food and is now running a vegetarian based 12-course menu only. He's using his influence to create a better way of eating and taking one step towards improving and educating others on how to eat better to care for the future of the planet.

piece of equipment that helps me make them. Some of the playful flavours that we serve include wasabi, passionfruit and orange blossom, and smoked vanilla.

What are your five ‘must haves’ in the kitchen? Kombu Kombu is a type of seaweed, widely used in Japanese cuisine and more famously being used in Dashi – the stock base for Miso soup. It adds a level of umami which I love building in my dishes.

Daqoos Spice Daqoos is a Bahraini spice blend which is very aromatic and adds a kick. Really delicious and unique.

Fleur de Sel from Mad in Lebanon Good quality salt makes all the difference to any dish. I use the best salts possible to season my food because it is really transformative. These specific salts are harvested in Lebanon and come in a variety of flavours including rose salt, lemon, olive, and premature grape. Each flavour enhances an ingredient in its own way. Pacojet Since we make all of our ice creams and sorbets, this is the magic

Date Molasses I use this ingredient because it adds a lot of depth to my recipes, without excessive sweetness. It’s local and an ingredient found in abundance in the region.

What do you like to do when you’re not cooking? I like to relax and unwind with a cosy night in and a good series or spend the day in the sunshine by the pool or at the beach. What is your signature dish or style that everyone should try? As for the sweet side, my latest creation 'Fields of Lavender' is my current favourite. This dessert has layer upon layer of delicate complimentary flavours and is a joy to eat. If we're talking savoury, the Tikka Steak, my modern version elevates the classic Bahraini street food 'Tikka' and is elevating it while maintaining the soul of the dish. ✤ fact magazine

restricted, finally, at last, buffets are making a comeback, in a shy way. At Al Waha, the island in the middle of the hall is missing its food displays. The show areas, in general, are more compact and glass shields are implemented everywhere, but the food is always great! Starters including cold mezze will be served to the table. A collection of salads, Hummus, Mutabbal, Baba-Ghannouj and more. Hot appetisers like shrimp tempura, deep fried calamari and others, are kept heated and available for you to collect or you can request a delivery to the table if you prefer. On Thursdays, the soup was the adored Tum Yum which is my favourite - Yaaay! For main course, of course the focus on themed nights is the cuts and fresh catches on display, but there are more pre-prepared main course dishes and sides, namely roasted or steamed vegetables, steamed rice, mashed or roasted potatoes…etc., to complete the perfect combo. Dessert will also be served to the table. We enjoyed a plate of mixed mini desserts and also shared one regular portion of a beautifully presented creation of sweet and tangy flavours – a dome of cake and mousse covered with a layer of berry gelatin… a great pleasure to eat and also to show off on your Instagram! You can enjoy all the buffet has to offer as you please, and you may repeat the dishes you like as you wish. And along with that, a list of drinks is at your disposal with a great variety. Some fresh, some bubbly, and a lot more. At the end, coffee and tea are an option if your night is to continue and caffeine is needed. If you have been to Al Waha many times, like me, you know it is always nice to revisit. And if you never did, then you must try it. Choose your preferred theme and book your next outing with family or close friends, as long as your green shield is working. ✤

The Saturday Italian Brunch at Rosso in The Art Hotel & Resort is without a doubt a great celebration of Italian colours and flavours… come along with us! I do not recall meeting one person in my life that does not like Italian food. It is probably the most popular of all cuisines and part of the fame is due to the simple pizza and pasta dishes that are, in fact, a fraction of a diverse gastronomical haven. I personally never say no to an Italian brunch! We arrive at the lobby of The Art Hotel & Resort and need no instructions. A few steps to the left of the waiting area, and the noise will tell you that you are on the right path. The smell of olive oil and garlic makes you smile under your mask while being welcomed by a friendly face. Your appetite is already awakened and ready to take pleasure in every creation available. We head straight to the table as we have chosen to be indoors in the coolness of the air-conditioning, shaded tables outdoors are an option for those who do not mind the hot weather. A waiter asks us what kind of beverages we would like to start with and then explains how the brunch works these days. We order our fizzy drinks and nod happily in acceptance to everything she says. I am so excited that brunches are back! The concept is to have an assisted buffet while keeping the à la carte menu available. Bread and cheese, salads and cold cuts, and soup counters stretch indoors along the glass wall. Opposite, stands the bar and the dessert and ice cream

station. And, you remember the smell of garlic? That is coming from the fresh pasta station that invades the space outside the entrance door. On the other side of the same glass wall, a buffet offers all the hot main course dishes ranging from the adored lasagna to Tuscan chicken, and multiple beef options. The huge pizza oven is in action and very attractive. When you pass by it, you cannot but to stop and take a video for your Instagram story of a couple of pizzas lying by the dancing flames. It is indeed the comfort food of all times! We start with some cheese, grilled vegetables, and tapenade on bread. The tomatoes and mozzarella salad, pasta tuna salad, and quinoa salad are all very refreshing. I pass on the seafood soup, but my partner enjoys a tasty bowl. Next, we share a couple of pizza choices and a couple of pasta dishes as well. The Quatro Formaggio Pizza is nice and cheesy, and the Pizza De Mare is well balanced and great with the house made chili oil. Both the chicken pasta in mixed sauce and the spaghetti bolognaise are nicely cooked and flavourful. The freshly prepared pasta making all the difference! At this point, frankly, I am fully satisfied with the savoury and with a choice between trying more main course dishes and enjoying something sweet with a cup of real Italian coffee, I decide on the latter. Fruit salad is a good source of vitamins and Tiramisu is an automatic choice. The Crème Brulée is tempting and worth the extra calories. And, of course, who would say no to ice cream?

The mango flavour is so summery and fresh. Good espresso tops it all to seal the deal in style. If you miss buffet feasts and the positive vibes of cool brunches, go ahead and book yours at Rosso but call in early to guarantee a table indoors under the tight Covid-19 restrictions of social distancing. Book now and thank me later. ✤

ery recently opened, this venue brings guests a concoction of flavours from different well-known establishments and the location of this food hub also boasts a colourful and relaxing ambience in which different age groups can enjoy their time whether it be with friends or family. Combining the flavours of six different well-known establishments, The Food Hall has managed to put together the essence of all these restaurants in a manner that is family-friendly, lunchfriendly and even business-friendly! Making it a location that isn't just cost-friendly, but even perfect for those random pop ins while you're in the area. Walking into the brand-new establishment, the location has been decorated in a way that is inviting, comfortable and extremely colourful with the palette they've chosen. With comfortable couches, an outdoor seating area (for those who prefer the radiating heat of the sun), and long windows that bring in the sunlight from all directions. The way the menus have been set up is quite intriguing – guests are asked to scan the QR code, which then then redirects you to a series of pages from which each representative restaurant has a selection of offerings. Taking a closer look at the different restaurants, The Food Hall currently houses these six establishments from Alazzam Group: Yasmine, Twist, Pastarito, Mezza House, Macaron Café and Paradiso. Starting our appetites off with mezze and salads from Yasmine, the authenticity of the Lebanese cuisine was very apparent – in

presentation, taste as well as quantity – perfect for two to share! We delved into some fabulously tasty Fattouche salad, kibbeh and freshly made samosas that melted at first bite. Also getting a taste of Twist Bahrain during our starters, the Dragon Shrimp and Cheese Fries were a highlight at our table. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing to look out (perfect for that Instagram shot), the different combination of flavours from these two dishes reminded us of the essence of Twist, who always bring their own TWIST on things, in a spectacular way, each time! Gearing up for some real true Italian cuisine, out came Pastarito’s Oven-Baked Fusilli and Macaroni Pasta with chicken, black olives, mozzarella cheese and pink sauce, alongside the Scacchiera signature cheese pizza, that was covered in all the toppings you could imagine. With my tastebuds focused on all the ingredients I was tasting, one saying came to mind – ‘life really and truly is a combination of magic and pasta’. We were on a rollercoaster of cuisines and taste emotions but could not refuse when out came Kabab Barg, grilled beef tenderloins served on hot plain rice, with beautifully intoxicating smells of garlic, lime and saffron, giving us an A to Z of authentic Persian delights. As if we weren't already stuffed to the core – this is a standard procedure – we gave ourselves a breather where we walked around the entire establishment (it's quite massive!) before coming back to seat ourselves in front of our sweet desserts. At the end of the day, who are we to say no to a sweet ending? Teasing my senses with an eclair from Macaron Café, what I fact magazine

estled in the island’s Southern Governate, Jaw Resort & Spa is a luxury property that brings a unique blend of style, decoration and atmosphere, offering guests a different type of peaceful family-friendly getaway that I have yet to see anywhere else in the Kingdom. After a long drive out of the city to the edge of the island, I finally made my way onto the resort, where you are welcomed immediately at the lobby. With protective shields in place, my check-in process lasted no longer than five minutes, I was quickly briefed on my itinerary, given my villa keys and escorted in a buggy from the entrance of the resort right to where my villa was located. As we zoomed through the resort and made our way to Villa Seven, I got ready to check into my haven for the weekend. Spanning more than 3,000sq/ft, the luxury two-bedroom villa displayed impressively modern décor and was not only equipped with its own private pool but also a massive kitchen that included all the amenities I needed to enjoy my stay at Jaw. With even a large dining table in the centre of the living room, the villa virtually had everything I needed to live comfortably over the next few days, or even longer, making it the perfect setting for a getaway with family or a group of friends. fact magazine

Walking straight into the master bedroom, to prepare myself for a splendid afternoon nap before my early dinner, I dove head-first into the king-size bed that felt as if it was made out of the world's softest feathers. With just the right number of pillows (which is anything above four), I slowly drifted into a peaceful slumber, away from all the city noise, while admiring the view of my private pool from the window (keep reading, we get to that part eventually). Waking up just in time to catch golden hour, I got dressed and headed down to the resort’s private beach, which was less than a minute walk from my accommodation. With a pure white-sand beach that spans over 8,000sq/m, I was immediately captivated by the shades of clear blue waters – walking right up to the shoreline, you could even get lucky and see shoals of fish swimming by ever so clearly. With different private cabanas set up on the beach, guests can enjoy the sun and sand with multiple choices – whether it be a sunbed on the sand or even a large cabana located in the middle of the water, the beach has plenty of different options for guests to explore and enjoy at different timings of the day. For those looking for a more intimate setting, the resort also has a special private 360 Ocean Dome among the gently lapping waves where you can enjoy views of the water, a bonfire and a well-prepared meal. One for all the lovers out there. Walking back up to the main dining area, Al Bareh Restaurant, I opted to sit outside at the restaurant’s beachside setting, which gave me panoramic ocean views as I explored the different Middle Eastern delicacies on offer. Good food and ocean vibes? Count me in every single time, baby! As the sun began to set, the evening was just ready to get underway back at the villa. Feeling nourished and ready to enjoy my private pool, in the comfort of my own home (at least for the night), I headed back. Turning on the TV to my favourite YouTube playlist and opening up the sliding balcony doors from the living room, I stepped outside to the fluorescently lit backyard and into my temperature-controlled pool – time stopped for me at this point as I floated around and enjoyed the cool waters without a single disturbance. This is what you call absolute bliss. Boasting forty fully equipped villas, with options for one, two and three bedrooms, Jaw Resort & Spa truly proved to be a place where tranquility and peace come together beautifully – they’ve just only recently launched at the end of last year and so their spa and health club are still works in progress, but the villas and beach are ready to welcome you any day of the week for a memorable experience. ✤

et me state from the outset that I love Italy. My musings for this article are thus pre-ordained in their bias. Forgive me then as a I recount five glorious days in Rome, a flirtation with Florence and a fleeting trip to Lake Como, without taking a critical eye, and for affording little time to each stop. This is simply a glimpse into a country as beautiful as it is old.

When in Rome The story starts where modern civilisation was born, in Rome. After taking a train from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the city centre, it’s a great relief to find that the apartment I’ve rented for a week is within brief walking distance of the terminal. Rome is a true blend of ancient and modern. My rental apartment has all the fittings of contemporary city life, but is set within old clay bricked walls with a bay window that overlooks one of the many cobbled streets in the heart of Rome. It is perfect.

When in Rome, there are several mandatory stops. Cited by all the travel brochures as must-sees, dutifully, I came, I saw, and I concurred. First on my list was the Vatican City Museum and The Sistine Chapel. With over 70,000 masterpieces of painting, sculpture and art collected over centuries, there’s a lot to take in at the museum. The Sistine Chapel, however, is my focus. Incredible interior walls are decorated with frescoes by Florentine Renaissance masters like Botticelli, but it’s the ceiling of the Sistine that I most want to see. Michelangelo’s masterpiece, created over four years and, I suspect, with back-painstaking patience, is beyond compare. Time in the chapel is limited and photographs of any kind are forbidden, but those images are etched in my mind forever. The Colosseum, the world’s largest amphitheatre, doesn’t bowl me over, even though I imagine Caesar applauding gladiators after grotesque battles between man and beast back in the days of the Circus Maximus. It is rather eerie to be connected with the fact magazine

brutality of ancient Rome in such a material way. Instead of throwing money into crypto, there’s always the Trevi Fountain. Clichéd as it might be, tossing a coin and making a wish feels really good. Of course, it’s best completed with a decadent and over-priced gelato ice cream, available from dozens of outlets within a tiny radius of the world’s most famous fountain. Rome with its madcap moped riders, fast-talking sidewalk vendors, endless souvenir shops, spectacular ancient ruins and irritable waiters serving irresistible pasta, is a like a live wire from my apartment’s exposed clay-brick wall, always ready to inject the day with a spark of wonder, while its connections remain inextricably linked to the past.

The Renaissance, Man Mark Twain once described Florence as a “city of dreams”. Thomas Harris in his novels frequently references Florence, as Hannibal Lecter cites the view of the Duomo from the Belvedere in The Silence of The Lambs as “being painted by memory”. Florence clearly inspires great writers and unforgettable literary characters to extoll its virtues. Perhaps it’s because the city was the birthplace of the Renaissance and still embodies the spirit of Italy’s past, seven hundred years later. It is physically beautiful but its greatest attraction is the sense of being in a time capsule, where ancient aesthetics function inside a vibrant hub of contemporary Italian hustle. You can buy a handbag from a Versace signature store or, if your pockets are more modest, negotiate a bargain at the Mercato Centrale and Mercato di San Lorenzo, two landmark outdoor markets. Either way you look cool. Florence is an ideal short-stop destination as its most iconic and historical components are concentrated into a small area. Taking a fast train from Rome at the crack of dawn is the answer if you want a quick but satisfying cultural fix. I arrive in Florence within the hour and start exploring Tuscany’s most celebrated city while the café owners are still putting out chairs, sweeping the pavements and preparing to host the daily influx of visitors with an equal dose of disdain and charm. It’s a good idea to grab some biscotti or an espresso while the streets are still empty. They won’t stay that way for long. The ‘Cradle of the Renaissance’ is home to some of the world’s most important museums and art galleries. It offers me evidence of our incredible capacity for artistic expression as well as arming me with eternal bragging rights having witnessed Michelangelo’s David and Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus first hand. Traversing the city on foot is the best way to fully ingest the local culture and history. I take a long walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo and stand above Florence, surveying the city in all its majesty. The panoramic viewpoint is far more than an Instagrammable moment, it’s a chance to reflect on the place that gave birth to a seismic cultural movement as well as some of the most influential artists and scientists ever known to man.

On the Waterfront Italy is all about living with style. Nowhere is this ethos more evident than at Lake Como, just north of Milan. Hemmed in by the snow-capped Alps and surrounded by postcard-perfect villas

nestling on the tranquil waters, you’re stepping into celebrity home territory here. Lake Como represents glamour, but very much in the Continental sense of the word, without much swagger or self-promotion. Subtle. Elegant. Unmistakable. I grab a train from Milan, Italy’s fashion capital, and head to Como to see what all the fuss is about. Boarding at Stazione Centrale, I alight at San Giovanni, Como's main station, 40 minutes later, after a scenic train trip. Como is an ancient town mixed with some modern urban sprawl. The old town, Centro Storico, is an active hub of cobbled lanes, congregational squares, small shops and pavement cafés where great coffee is the norm. It’s a real working town, not just a tourist trap, and I like it for that. Como is surrounded by green hills dotted with funiculars leading to incredible hillside homes. A short stroll leads to the waterfront where the town opens up to a villarimmed basin which is more the Lake Como of travel shows and glamorous movie scenes I had imagined. Here I find a network of ferries ready to take me upstream to explore the smaller villages and lakeside towns like the renowned beauty spot of Bellagio. I didn’t meet the Clooneys on this trip, but it was a glimpse into how the other half lives. In fact, for at least a day or two, I felt as if I was the other half, and that can’t be all bad. To recommend a trip to Italy seems redundant. Of course you must see it. The country is a heady mix of typical tourist traps and awe-inspiring tradition, of undeniably fantastic food and very grumpy café proprietors. It’s everything you expect it to be and a whole lot more. ✤ fact magazine

Why Is It Worth Watching?

With an all-star cast like this, it’s not hard to be excited about the release, finally, of the sequel to 2017's The Hitman's Bodyguard. And, with such a ridiculous title, it’s also no surprise that this is billed as a comedy drama. Four years after the events of the original film, bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds) continues his uneasy friendship with assassin Darius Kincaid (Jackson) as they embark on a new adventure. The world's most lethal odd couple are back on another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius's even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Hayek). The trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman, played convincingly by Antonio Banderas. Joining in the fun and deadly mayhem is Morgan Freeman, whose roll is still a mystery. Expect a bit of a romp and some scorching one-liners. And enjoy the guilty pleasure of Jackson, Banderas and Freeman sharing a big screen.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

If, like us, the finale of the first season left you more confused than at the beginning, you’ll be glad to hear that Season Two is out now. But, a word of warning, if you haven’t seen season one, it’s going to be very hard to catch up on a story in which you never quite know who to trust. Sara Guzmán died 18 years earlier in an apparent accident. However, police and courts judged it to be murder and her brother, Álex, took the fall for the notorious Lazcano family. Series one followed his hunt for the real killer, racing through more twists and turns than a Grand Prix circuit and exposing a litany of Lazcano crimes, from sex trafficking to murder with more than a touch of infidelity and more than a little madness thrown in. Alliances were built, tested and broken until, at the end, a whole new premise emerged apparently showing Sara to be anything but the innocent her brother had assumed. Series Two delves deeper into Sara’s troubled past and will, hopefully, answer all our questions.

Chemtrails Over the Country Club By Lana Del Ray

Carnage By Nick Cave & Warren Ellis

PR savvy she may not be but one thing that’s indisputable is that Lana Del Ray is one of the finest songwriters of her generation, with a melodic and lyrical flair that invites emotional investment in her music, surpassing anything it reflects of her actual life. Chemtrails Over the Country Club is a quieter, starker album than her last release. Autobiographical by nature, the album is filled with beauty and insight, the culmination of experience, both good and bad, and the assurance that comes from it. Reminiscent in tone to Taylor Swift’s Folklore in its maturity and simplicity and produced in collaboration with Jack Antonoff, who had a hand in Swift’s album, the work is mature and firmhanded, constructed around patient piano cords and shimmering guitars. Del Rey invokes her heroes and favoured artists, like Tammy Wynette, in her own work while paying tribute to Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks through the artistry of the album.

Fans of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, will be excited about the release of the album Carnage, uniting Cave with former Bad Seeds buddy Warren Ellis. At the same time it will provide much food for musing as they look for answers inside the album. This is not a Bad Seeds record but a collaboration between Cave and his on-stage right-hand man and songwriting partner of the ages. The two have made a career out of mesmerising audiences and Carnage is a step into fresh terrain. Without any stage performances to galvanise them over the past year, they’ve harnessed the panic of pandemic lockdown into a focused commentary on introspection amid uncertainty. Carnage is both compassionate and prodigious in its approach and ambition, certainly not flawless but sincere and soul-touching at times. From wheezing choruses by Ellis to grandiose choir accompaniments, it’s both a collective and reflective work, running the gamut of the sonic range.

Not so much a book as therapy sessions committed to page What Happened To You? is nonetheless an engagingly accessible dive into exploring the past experiences behind present tensions. Oprah Winfrey shares stories from her own past, recounting the vulnerability that comes from facing trauma and adversity in one’s formative youth. Through her series of personal conversations with renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry, the book provides innovative insights and provokes a profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” Well worth a read to shift perspective and build resilience in moving forward more healthily.

FICTION

Later

by Stephen King A new Stephen King novel is greeted with much anticipation. In this case Later is worth the wait. With readily acknowledged touches of the movie The Sixth Sense, Later is classic King, integrating a coming-of-age tale with the supernatural thriller and horror genres. Coming in as a short novel rather than a long short story, the plot introduces a young boy called Jamie Conklin who sees - yes you guessed it - dead people. While the terrain sounds familiar the first-person narrative is fresh. The characters are well drawn and the unsettling scenes well-paced. It’s a punchy, jump-scaring, page-turner and a touching tale of lost innocence. fact magazine

aunched in early 2017, the Committed collection is part of the brand’s Take Action project, which aims to create a business model based on sustainability criteria and more environmentallyfriendly processes through a variety of initiatives. The high-quality garments are manufactured from eco-conscious fabrics such as organic and recycled cotton, recycled polyester and Tencel. The Mineral Dyes capsule debuts pieces that have been made using tints produced from organic pigments, that are extracted from a variety of natural sources – whose indigenous properties allow them to naturally dye fibres. Employing this ancient technique eliminates the risk of toxic chemicals present in other dyes that are known to be harmful to people’s health and the environment. And, with the scorching heat of a Middle Eastern summer well and truly upon us, natural fibres are just the thing for keeping cool on even the hottest days. While the effortless elegance of washed-out pastels and oh-so-pale earth tones makes relaxed and stylish dressing easier than ever. Inspired by Mediterranean aesthetics, this edit features oversized sweatshirts and smart overshirts, laidback hoodies and tees, complete with relaxed crops and vests. For a head-to-toe monochrome look, choose from an array of comfy separates in neutral tones. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About Sing Along

Light Up the Sky

Dangerous Driving

Did you enjoy this year’s Eurovision? We must admit, we’re not avid fans. That’s because it seems to have become a bit of a juggernaut with smaller national competitions running weeks before to choose the entrants, not to mention two semi-finals, so you pretty much know what’s coming long before the big night. No doubt, it makes for good telly but half the excitement used to be seeing who would come up with what in the actual competition. By dint of its name Eurovision – spot the Euro in there – started off in 1956, originally conceived through a desire to unite European countries through cross-

We’re feeling a bit nostalgic this month and harking back to childhood days when a super-bright moon hit the sky ‘like a big piece of pie’ and was simply that – a really bright, beautiful moon. Of course, there were a few special periods like the Harvest Moon, but really what’s with all the new ones? Supermoon, Blood Moon, Super Blood Moon, apparently we’ve just missed the year’s first lunar eclipse which was due to take place on May 26 and was expected to be extra special featuring a Supermoon, a lunar eclipse and Red Blood Moon all in one go – or a Super Flower Blood Moon lunar eclipse,

Back in April, two people were killed when a driverless car crashed into a tree – reports say the ‘driver’, who was not one of the fatalities, was in the back seat at the time! He has been arrested (whether for sheer stupidity is not clear). And now federal safety regulators are looking at another crash in which a driverless electric vehicle struck an overturned truck on a highway. The driver of the automated vehicle was killed and another person, who was trying to help the truck driver out of his vehicle, was hit and seriously injured. It’s not yet clear whether the car was in autopilot when the accident happened.

border television broadcasts following World War II. That first iteration had just seven entries. This year’s contest had two semis and a final and 39 entries! Since when was Australia in Europe? And the list of countries that have not been able to join in is even more confusing. China was interested in participating but that got knocked on the head due to censorship. And even the then Soviet Union tried to get in on the act. If you ask us, and admittedly no-one did, it’s all got a bit out of hand.

depending on where you look! On second thoughts, you probably didn’t miss it because there’ll have been much excitement across news and social media in the run up. Apparently, the January full moon is a Wolf Moon – also known variously as the Snow Moon and the Hunger Moon. It seems there is some sort of special moon to look out for every month. Kinda takes away from the myth of the kindly man in the moon, which should, of course, be recognisably made of cheese.

It has been reported that Tesla is allowing a limited number of motorists to test its self-driving system, but experts say that, not surprisingly, America’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is under pressure to take action over the automated vehicles which have been involved in multiple crashes. Here’s a thought, rather than waiting for the NHTSA to act, how about not allowing idiots behind the wheel (or rather not) of these vehicles in the first place?

ISLAND INSIDER

Abdullah Ahmed Founder of Posters Bahrain

How did the poster business get started and what was the inspiration? I was renovating my office and wanted something specific to fill a wall space. I searched up and down the island but could not find what I was looking for, so I figured there had to be another way. The art of interiors has always interested me, I’m a strong believer that our surroundings affect us, sometimes without us even realising it, and would even go so far as to say the environment we create for ourselves is definitely an indication of our state of mind. My office was dull and needed something to bring it to life. I knew exactly what I was looking for and, in frustration, I finally thought ‘If you can’t find it, create it!’ It was, for sure, easier said than done. I wanted a canvas of my all-time favourite The Godfather. But not just any canvas. I had to find an artist to design something customised to my specification. It had to be the right size, high-quality canvas and 90

fact magazine

with the specific modifications I wanted. This first canvas was my inspiration and the comments I received on it inspired me to turn my passion into a business. In the beginning it was a small operation, creating canvases for bedrooms and offices. But, in just a few months Posters Bahrain actually shocked me and expanded way beyond my expectations. It wasn’t even limited to Bahrain anymore, I was getting orders from all sorts of places wanting customised pieces for lounges, offices, cafés and even big corporations. Three years later and that one canvas of The Godfather has turned into thousands, each uniquely customised with its own story to tell. Do you work with local artists as well as international? We have designers working for Posters Bahrain daily to meet the requirements for our clients who just need to share their ideas and we will make it happen.

You can see some of the best results, and, of course, that now infamous Godfather canvas, on our Instagram page @posters_bah. Are you an artist or involved in the artistic world? I’m not an artist but I’m involved in the art world because, personally, I love art and passion is one of the most effective motivators when it comes to business. A business can only thrive on passion; this is why Posters Bahrain has been success. However, passion cannot be the only ingredient. I’m also about to step into the hospitality business, bringing to fruit another personal ambition. I’ll be launching a restaurant concept called ‘THE BO$$MAN’, something fresh and new to bring an interesting twist to the island’s dining scene. There will be a grand opening that no-one will want to miss, so make sure you keep an eye on our social media for our latest news.
