While lots of people will be travelling for the summer (written in a begrudging tone, if that’s even possible), more of us than ever seem to be staying on the island over the hotter months. And, when it’s seriously hot outside, if you’re anything like us, your thoughts turn to food.

Our cover story this month is an absolute whopper. We’ve listed eight pages of dining options from some of our favourite venues around the Kingdom, spoken to a hospitality expert and tripled the number of chefs in Voice From The Kitchen as well as all our regular dining reviews. If all that doesn’t make you hungry, sorry we can’t be friends! Elsewhere, lucky Tanu got to try out a staycation – just to prove that you don’t have to leave Bahrain to go on holiday. But, if you are thinking of taking an overseas break, don’t miss our Travel section to learn all about Portugal. It’s got me hankering after a plane ticket (even more than usual). Our Island Rides this month features the Hongqi H9 fresh from the brand’s new

As always we have round-ups of news from the worlds of motoring, tech, entertainment, fashion and beauty as well as things to do around the island – make sure you check out all the info on Bahrain Summer Festival in the Listen Up pages.

A POETIC DIARY ‘Bahrain Barbie’, a British singer and songwriter living in the Kingdom, has launched her new album with an electrifying performance.

F

or such a tiny island, the Kingdom sure has produced its fair share of celebrities. From Bahrain-born Jacqueline Fernandez taking Bollywood by storm to 2012 X Factor winner and international music artist James Arthur who moved here when he was just nine. Add to this growing list, Tamar Leek. Locally known as ‘Bahrain Barbie’ because of her colourful and vibrant stage persona, she launched Change in the Retrograde with an energetic event where she performed songs from the album along with a live band of session musicians that replaced her original band – Reveries from Los Angeles – members for the evening. The original album was recorded at 4th Street Recording, Santa Monica. Tamar, the singer and song writer, drew her inspiration from a heartbreak. She credits her very good friend Kathleen Wirt – the owner of the studio – and Kathleen’s partner Sejo Navajas, with whom she wrote the album, for having been with her throughout this emotional and musical journey. Tamar said: “The sound of my album is essentially alternative rock. It has some pop and indie elements and some dreamy and ethereal elements too. The album plays with tempos and dynamics and there is a strong sense of light and dark. The vocals 10

are very raw and emotive. I wrote them when I was going through some difficult times in my life, and the album is very personal for that reason. It's like a poetic diary that I have left open for people to read. Each song tells a story. There is heartbreak in there, and deep emotions. In some songs there is a 'cry' sound to my vocals on the high notes, and I can tell you now, it was a genuine one.” Speaking of the Kingdom’s “friendly and supportive” musician community, she said: “I admire people that write their own original music, so I'd have to say two of my favourite artists are Ali Malik, and Mo Zowayed. Bands I like are Jack Rabbit Slims, Rooftop band and The Legendz.” Tamar regularly performs in Bahrain and has exciting events lined up. You can listen to her new album on streaming platforms including Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora and Anghami and on YouTube. ✤

THE CUBAN GROOVE Casa Mexicana’s two-piece band from Cuba will have you swaying your body, snapping your fingers and tapping your feet. Since it opened its doors to diners in 1993, Casa Mexicana, located in the Kingdom’s popular food district in Adliya, has been serving and entertaining guests with authentic Mexican cuisine, groove-inducing music and an upbeat vibe. The restaurant has always had a Mexican kitchen and Head Chef Romaldo, who hails from Acapulco, has been turning out tasty dishes there for almost 15 years. The new band, The Cuban Groove, comes all the way from Cuba and performs a mix of different types of music: Mexican, Latin, Spanish and English. The perfect backdrop to a fun evening with friends over delicious Mexican fare. Roi and Claudia, the members of this two-piece band, have been playing together for almost a year. Before coming to Bahrain, they graced the stages of many a lounge and private party in Cuba. Roi is 37 years old. Speaking about his time on the island so far, he says: “I came here to work in this marvellous and beautiful place. And we love this country. It’s a very good place for everything for visiting and working.” Claudia started singing at the age of 10. She was part of many bands in Cuba and has been playing for several years.. When Roi 12

fact magazine

met her, he recognised her talent. “She has a very good voice,” he says. He then proposed that they team up and now, here they are. Together, they have several decades of experience and are setting the stage at Casa Mexicana on fire. So, what is the sound of The Cuban Groove? On their visits to places such as Jamaica and San Martin, they observed how artists blend jazz, reggae and Latin music, which appealed to them. Roi says: “Yeah, they are very similar, but not the same. So, we can mix it, everything. Giving birth to a new style and for that reason we mix a lot. We are mixing because we are a mixed race. In Cuba, we have a lot of different races.” While they bring the best of all musical worlds together, Roi and Claudia’s performance is infused with the Cuban spirt, culture and lifestyle; the cars, the streets, the beaches, the hotels…head to Casa Mexican and discover the magic for yourself. ✤

5 OVER 5 •

Your background throughout your career has been in sales and marketing. How did the move to Director of Operations come about? A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and that’s a quote I live by. I have been in the hotel industry for more than 20 years. I started my career in F&B (food and beverage) operations with passion and a mission to use my skills wisely and work on my professional development to move up the ladder a step at a time. I’m looking forward to further progressing to the top and

What is your management secret or style to get the best from your staff? I would describe my leadership style as ‘lead by example’. I like to start by demanding excellence from myself and inspiring my team. I always stay involved with my team and show them that I am ready to support their growth and foster a positive work culture. I believe that leading by example is the fastest way to train a team towards excellence and achieve success more quickly.

becoming a General Manager one day. What does this role entail? I am responsible for the effective operational management of the hotel supporting all Heads of Departments to achieve and exceed their revenue and guest satisfaction targets. I am also involved in the development of meaningful, achievable hotel budgets and other short- and long-term hotel strategic goals. What would you say is the best part of your job? And the most challenging? For me, the best part is the challenge that this role involves: moving out of my comfort zone, taking risks, and trying new techniques to bring value and achieve targets. If a position isn’t challenging, it becomes uncomfortable.

What is one thing you would advise visitors to Bahrain to see or try? I have two favourite places that I encourage tourists to visit depending on their preferences. For those who admire historical journeys, I would advise them to take a day trip to see the Tree of Life. It is incredible to think how this over 400-year-old tree has survived in the middle of the desert. This is a great landmark that you don’t get to see in every country. And, for those who enjoy contemporary places, motorsports and automotive racing fans, visiting Bahrain in springtime, I recommend visiting the Bahrain F1 Grand Prix event to enjoy a whole next-level experience. You get to enjoy watching the race and experiencing a wide range of other entertaining activities. ✤ fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

What made you want to become a chef? Was it an ambition from boyhood? My mother and brother have always worked in the culinary industry. My mother works at the Sunday market and my brother in his standalone restaurant in our city of Goiânia. That’s what interested me in the chef's life and I started working with two other chefs; my inspiration was my older brother, who had great success with his restaurants. In my boyhood, I didn't think I'd get where I am today.

when Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil in 1908 and now, in 2022, there are more than two million Japanese in Brazil..

How did you become interested in fusion cuisine? We hear a great deal about Japanese-Peruvian fusion, but please tell us about how the flavours and techniques of Brazil work with Japanese traditions. Japanese cuisine works very well with any fusion. We also need to follow what our guests request because they are the ones who will enjoy our food. Brazilian cuisine is significant in many aspects, including spices, citrus and umami. The techniques are charcoal grill, tempura, braised, fish soups and rice mixture. The Japanese and Brazilian cuisine mixture started many years ago

What is your signature dish, and what makes it so popular? I have three signature dishes right now: 50 Best Maki Rolls; the Wagyu steak with yuzu kosho mushrooms; and the Grilled U10 prawns. The 50 Best Maki has 12 ingredients mixed between fish, vegetables and pickles. The Wagyu striploin has exquisite flavours from the meat, the umami and citrus from the mushrooms. And the Grilled U10 Prawns have the smoked flavours from the shells and the delicious tamari soy with pleasant miso fermentation. ✤

Did you have any mentors along the way in your culinary journey? What was the most important thing you learned? Yes, Chef Fernando, Chef Yoshi Muranaka and Chef Cristian Bravaccini. I learned that the kitchen is the heart of any restaurant; without good food, you can never have an amazing restaurant. Also, work hard, be consistent, do your simple best and never give up.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

What is your earliest food memory and what inspired you towards a life in kitchen? I remember when I was a kid I looked into my family library that was full of books and encyclopedias. Sometimes I was opening the Curcio Editori La Cucina encyclopedia, 15 volumes of books covering culinary information and cocktails from all around the world. This is partially one of the reasons I chose to become a chef, but my main reason was because my spirt was directed towards artistic matters and painting was in my soul. My father encouraged me to study at a professional school and culinary school was the best option to allow me to express my artistic spirit. Who is your kitchen hero – someone you would like to work with or learn from? As my career has evolved, I have been inspired by so many chefs, probably I have also been so lucky to live in a period that has witnessed an explosion of television culinary shows. But the chef who inspires me the most is Heston Blumenthal

How do you go about constructing a new menu? It’s a technical process, I create the menus based on menu engineering analysis, I listen to the guests to find out what they are looking for and try to design creative menus with dishes that people will remember forever, always with my own twist. It is our duty as chefs to deliver the most tasteful experience to our clientele, ensuring their return. What is your signature dish and what makes it popular? I choose, as my signature dish, the Sicilian Cous Cous. It may sound strange but Sicily is well known for cous cous. For centuries Sicily has had a connection with Arabic culture and this is the reason why Sicily is a region of Italy with a lot of diversity compared to other areas. The sauce is a concentration of essences that are linked with Sicily from the freshness of the fish to the sweetness of the orange and tomato; the cous cous is seasoned with dry herbs and saffron. ✤ fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

With significant experience both in Europe and across the region, what made you decide to come to Bahrain? I am always looking for new experiences and culinary adventures to inspire my creative process of creating unique dishes from across the world. Bahrain just happened to come around at the right time, igniting the perfect spark of inspiration. In addition to being an exciting new destination, it also offered me the opportunity be a part of the fantastic team, handling both Vida and the upcoming Address Beach Resort Bahrain. As part of its ethos, Vida is committed to establishing strong environmental credentials. How is this translated into your kitchen? Origins, our all-day dining restaurant at Vida Bahrain, perfectly aligns with this perspective and this makes it easier to execute our health-friendly menu items. I make sure to portray the effort Vida is committed to making in preserving the environment. We do that by freshly sourcing natural, locally sourced produce and ingredients whilst having seasonal items on the menu as well as maintaining a clean menu throughout

the year. Of course, this means we aim to demonstrate that taste equals health in all dishes we put out. Please tell us about the new menu you have just launched. The Bistro by Origins has just launched a more summery menu with some influences from different French classic dishes such as the Warm Goat Cheese Salad with fresh berries or our homemade Ravioli with Burrata and Summer Truffle. Our guests can enjoy a fresh platter of oysters as well as a fine selection of French cheese with modern twists and, of course, Instagrammable food presentations! Don’t forget to try out our famous Mussels Night every Thursday, at The Bistro by Origins. What is your favourite dish to cook and to eat? I enjoy cooking pretty much everything and I always like to try new recipes. However, I mostly like working with pastry. I particularly enjoy the precision of the recipes and the subtle blend of flavours, among other details. Pastry has no limits when it comes to creativity. If you are imaginative, you will be delighted because the possibilities are endless. Dessert is like a feel-good song and the best ones make you dance. ✤ fact magazine

T

ravelling to different countries involves exploring local cuisines, trying unexpected combinations and expanding your food knowledge. At Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay Friday Brunch, you can do this simply by heading to the next exciting food station. Authentic and contemporary twists are one step away from each other. The light entering the space was stunning on our visit; we were lucky enough to be sitting by the window with a view of the outside greenery contrasting with the blue water. And, to my delight, Bahrain Bay Kitchen looked just as I remembered it. The round columns and golden accents throughout the room excel in grandness, and the food stations are carefully arranged with enough space to spot what you want and move around. Comfortable chairs and tables of the right size to fit all and the food samples complement this impressive space. One of the things I appreciated most was that all the stations were clearly identified with unique chalk writings, and there were subtle divisions between them. All the Arabic creations were arranged near each other and decorated accordingly and likewise all the East Asian options available in the same area. My exploration strategy followed their floor plan, so if I wanted to explore the Italian delicacies, I would head to the site with pizzas and yummy pastas. A genuine expedition into the world of food. Talking about the Italian station, I have to highlight the freshly baked pizzas. You won’t find the regular round versions but more rustic looking ones with crispy dough and high-quality toppings in the Pinsa Romana pizza style which is a reinterpretation of an ancient Roman recipe. The smell was as delicious as the soft and yet crunchy dough – I love pizza dough – airy and full of flavour from its natural levitation. I decided to head to Peru and stopped at the live Ceviche station. fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

As you probably know, ceviche is a refreshing cold dish that brings a twist to raw fish. The two chefs were busy preparing the beautifully presented options available: the seabass marinated in classic Leche de Tigre (made with lime juice, onions, chillies, salt and pepper combined with the fish juices), a traditional option and one with red chilli paste; Nikkei salmon (an encounter between Japan and Peru bringing a tangy taste when adding South American flavours) with tamarind paste, bonito flakes and nori crackers; and shrimp with passion fruit, Ají Amarillo (a popular Peruvian chilli) and crispy banana to add a crunch. The flavours, as expected, were divine, mixing intense juices and textures. It was an exciting live cooking station and probably unique to Four Seasons’ brunch in Bahrain. Moving to the Levantine region, my favourite part was the Fatteh station. The word fatteh means crumbles and mixes pieces of toasted flatbread, yoghurt, mint, olive oil and chickpeas. You can prepare your own version at the station, adding the ingredients you like the most. Meat lovers (such as my husband) have so many options that you have to be selective and start with your preferred cuts; otherwise, you won’t eat them all. He loves ribs, so he went for the Barbecue Short Ribs, and the flesh was easily coming off the bones in succulent pieces that he devoured with pleasure. The Slow Roasted Wagyu Rump was one of his other options, and he barely had words to say how soft and well-flavoured the slice of meat was – simply seasoned yet cooked to perfection and bringing out the taste of such a high-quality cut of meat. My six-year-old was excited about the kids’ corner. All the food is 50

available at their height, which is well thought out; this way, they can see the food and choose their preferred bites independently. From mac and cheese, mini burgers, fries and steamed broccoli to popcorn and doughnuts hung on a funky wall. He went for a plate full of broccoli and popcorn – weird taste buds, I know. If you are a seafood enthusiast, the selection is vast, with shrimps, lobster, mussels and fresh oysters displayed in a bed of ice and looking very appealing. Sushi, bao buns, dumplings and a wok station complement the Asian spread. And, one of the most impressive areas is where countries such as France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain meet, represented by their impeccable cheeses. My teenage daughter went on a mission to try a small piece of each; what a beautiful plate she had, paired with fruits and nuts. And what is a brunch without eye-catching desserts? Another worldwide degustation journey with Blonde Chocolate Brownie, Crême Brûlée, Saffron Rice Pudding, Mango & Coconut Torta, Cherry Pavlova, Tiramisu, Cannoli, Japanese Cheesecake, Arabic sweets and a variety of cakes surrounded by mini samples of the delicious creations and more, much more – all beautifully displayed and finely decorated in stunning designs. So difficult to choose! We got a few options and shared them. Our favourite bites (from our small selection) were the Crême Brûlée, Japanese Cheesecake and Florencia ice cream – the island’s beloved home brand had a parked pushcart near the kids’ corner. But the experience does not end with the food. Refreshing drinks are available near the freshly-cut fruits, and we unanimously approved the passion fruit lemonade that was served in cute little bottles. To complete the memorable experience, live music with Latin and pop tunes and the nice touch of bringing a talented magician to entertain the diners. He came to our table, and we couldn’t believe our eyes and senses with his impressive tricks – he left us, especially my son, speechless. The Four Seasons gourmet brunch is the perfect choice for those looking for a high-end and wholesome experience – best shared with family and friends. ✤

DINING DELIGHT •

A

s I enter, I’m pleasantly surprised to see that the restaurant’s interior has been redone. A wash of blue and white sweeps over my senses, instantly putting me in the mood for authentic Lebanese dining. The tiled floor and upholstery are marked with Mediterranean motifs, which stand out beautifully in an otherwise plain space. The walls are fixed with canvas arches that light up from within, barring one side, which is fitted with mirrors, making the space look bigger. I particularly like the shelves displaying earthenware, which offers a rustic touch to the décor. While Zahle is simply designed, it has a certain elegance, befitting a dining outlet at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain. There’s a stage at the back end of the restaurant. In the evenings, it’s graced by a one-man show, a female singer and a DJ, offering the perfect backdrop to an evening of sharing – food, conversation and a good time. I settle in with my companions and soon the food starts to arrive. We’re served the extensive set menu. First come the appetisers or mezze. While I’ve tasted most of the dishes before, I’m excited to try two that are new to me. First, chicken liver sautéed with sticky-sour pomegranate molasses, garlic and Zahle’s signature spices. The pâté-like texture of the liver has a certain richness, sliced through by the sharpness of the sauce. Our Lebanese companion recommends we dip the thick-cut potato fries in the sauce. The hot chips soak in the liver-infused juices and we’re blown away by a burst of flavours in our mouth. Then Adas bel Roman, a homogenous mixture of brown lentils, freekeh, or green durum wheat, mustard,

• DINING DELIGHT pomegranate seeds and molasses, with a consistency similar to baba ganoush – which we also eat – only more robust. It offers a balance of savoury, sweet and earthy flavours. Our hot mezze also includes staples such as Chilli Potato. Cubed, fried potatoes infused with chilli, garlic, lemon and coriander; Mixed Puffs featuring kibbeh – a minced meat and cracked wheat croquette; cheese sambousek, cheese stuffed dough that’s deep-fried, and spring rolls. The cold mezze includes hummus, a dip made using ground chickpeas, garlic, tahini and olive oil. This humble dish, ubiquitous across Middle Eastern cuisine, is packed with a subtle, garlicky flavour. It has a slightly grainy, creamy texture. Moutabel is an aubergine dip, which has a smoked flavour rendered by oven roasted eggplants mixed with lemon juice, tahini and garlic. Both are eaten with warm pita bread, which, against the cold dips, offers a tantalising contrast, further whetting our appetite. Our bread basket also comes with bread sticks. The Vine Leaves are stuffed with rice, tomato, parsley, onion, olive oil and lemon juice. Tart and juicy, they complement the other dishes on our table. Salads include fattoush made using heirloom cherry tomatoes, green bell pepper and rocket leaves, giving this rustic Levantine salad a contemporary touch. The flavours, however, are authentic. The crunchy vegetables refresh the palate as does the piquant dressing. Tabouleh is a parsley and bulgur wheat dish, which has an herby taste and is equally refreshing. The main course is a mixed grill platter of lamb kebabs and chicken and beef tikka. They’re served the traditional way with roasted tomatoes, chillies and onions. All the meat is cooked to perfection while retaining its juicy and tender qualities. I’d like to give the chicken a special mention. I start cutting it using a certain amount of force based on the texture that I anticipate but it falls apart so easily that I’m mildly shocked. I ask our hosts if it is fish – not exaggerating here – but they confirm it is chicken and, just like that, it is the best chicken tikka I’ve ever eaten in my life. Every bite is sealed with meaty goodness, which is further enhanced by the roasted accompaniments and tangy, salty pickles. We make a pitstop at the mezze and salads from time to time during our main course. We end with a decadent cheesecake topped with orange blossom flower jam. The Ashta, or clotted cream, adds a local touch to this delicately flavoured dessert. There’s a fruit platter too. A Lebanese meal offers so much variety that it’s hard to finish without finding something you like. Moreover, it’s the family-style dining that makes the experience that much more enjoyable. For those who don’t know, Zahlé is one of the attractive cities in Lebanon, known for its poetry, pleasant climate, riverside restaurants and more. Safe to say, we enjoyed the spirit of this place at its namesake. ✤

FRESH NEW FLAVOURS Liz O’Reilly finds new dishes and a great atmosphere at Western-themed eatery Howdy

ON THE MENU •

T

he last time I was at Howdy, which was just after its opening, the menu was distinctly Western-style – very much created with cowboys and girls in mind. So, I was in for a pleasant surprise on my latest visit to find a new chef and lots of welcome variety. While the steaks and wings are still very much in evidence, we were treated to some fresh and inventive dishes. Visiting on a Wednesday evening, we were lucky enough to tune into the weekly salsa class, watching as the dancers spun across the floor. Later an all-girl Latina band provided the vibes as the dancers freestyled, putting their newfound moves to good use. The upstairs lounge area, where we chose to dine, is dimly-lit with walls bearing décor reminiscent of the Wild West and a wellstocked bar. The atmosphere is intimate and cosy and the servers, in their Western-style dress, attentive and helpful. After supplying us with drinks, our food started to arrive and I was curious to see what was on the menu. First up was Cobb Salad, which is available with various meats and comes in a bowl teaming with crispy bacon, black olives, lettuce, boiled eggs, blue cheese and avocado. A veritable riot of textures and flavours, the meat combining beautifully with the blue cheese, and a portion more than large enough to serve as a main course. Our Halloumi Salad came with wild rocket, cherry tomatoes, radish and blue cheese dressing. The cheese was presented in coated sticks, its salty tanginess, when dipped in the dressing, the perfect foil to the sweetness of the tiny tomatoes and the bite of the thinly sliced radish. The salads were accompanied by what was, for me, the absolute standout dish of the evening. Risotto with prawns and caviar, which was really creamy and super tasty with the caviar adding that fact magazine

telltale popping sensation into the otherwise gooey forkfuls. My taste buds honestly believed I had died and gone to heaven and, contrary to my own food-tasting rule of having just a little of each dish, this had me going back for more until the plate was empty. With a little breather to rest our tums, we were soon ready for the lamb chops with grilled eggplant. I am a huge fan of this yummy vegetable in all its many forms and was particularly taken by this version by chef Penam which featured a flavoursome mix of garlic, onion, paprika and Asian spice. The lamb was soft, delicate and pink while the eggplant mix really brought out the taste of the meat and also went extremely well with the generous side serving of mashed potatoes. More mains followed including salmon with veggies and mash – the salmon perfectly cooked and coated in a lemon and garlic sauce that added a delicious piquancy to the fish. Penne pasta with a creamy parmesan sauce lifted by the addition of bell peppers, came with crunchy garlic bread. And Honey Orange Wings offered a tasty alternative to the usual barbecue sauce, which I often find overdone and overpowering. These, in fact, were succulent, juicy and with a tender flavour that went perfectly with the rest of the dishes we tried. Last but not least was Rib-Eye steak with mashed potatoes and mushroom sauce. This really was quite an achievement – the outer was crusty from the pan but the interior was a uniform pink throughout. I usually go for medium rare and, from the outside, was expecting this to be both chewy and overcooked for my preference but, to the contrary, it was juicy, tasty and so flavoursome and well58

seasoned that no additions were necessary. The mushroom sauce was quite unusual in that it was chunky, rather than smooth, and added a quirky contrast to the potatoes – I ate it separate from the meat, not wanting to affect the flavour of the flesh in any way. Howdy has a great selection of desserts, of which the Pistachio Pear Tartlet is a firm favourite. However, on this occasion, neither myself nor my dining companion had room for another morsel, so we have a good reason to go back. Howdy is known both for its mid-week specials and its Friday brunch, so get yourself down to Adliya to check out the latest dishes on the menu. You won’t be disappointed. ✤

NEW IN TOWN •

I

headed to Butcher and Buns (B&B) Lounge for lunch. It’s a new kid on the block and I was excited for what it had to offer. Happy to report, I wasn’t disappointed. The space gave off Arabic sports bar vibes, only posher. The hardwood flooring and vertical wooden blinds rendered a classy edge. The glistening blue-tile wall added a pop of colour. Offering booth-style and regular seating, the venue was moderately lit when we visited, during the day. There was lounge music playing, which elevated our experience. If you visit on a Monday, you can enjoy a live Latino band. On other days, a resident DJ plays. The ’Bites’ menu features build-your-own-burgers. Adding variety are salads, snacks and steaks. You can choose from soft brioche, bagel, seeded or focaccia buns, which are made inhouse; beef, chicken or vegetarian patties; and a variety of B&B toppings. Sides (ordered separately) include regular fries, sweet potato fries, steakhouse style fries, a salad or a corn casserole. There are a variety of condiments and sauces. Black Olivada and Brava stood out for me. The former tasted like a tapenade; the anchovies lent it a salty note, which I particularly liked. The latter was spicy, made using chili peppers, tomatoes and garlic. It offered a nice touch of heat, which appealed to my numbed Indian tastebuds. Our meaty affair began with Born in USA. A juicy beef patty topped with beef bacon, cheddar cheese, roasted onions, lettuce and tomatoes. It was lightly seasoned but a bite with all the elements tasted splendid. The burgers are made in-house with a signature blend of different cuts of meat, which keeps them moist and succulent. Hand in glove with the patty was the crispy, sweet fact magazine

Next, we tried Veggie Friendly, a spin on the local felafel, made with chickpeas, kidney beans, broad beans, flax seeds, cereals and vegetables. I’m an obligate carnivore but I quite liked this earthy creation. Every bite was savoury and herby. The mushrooms and thinly sliced beets added texture. After this came Frenchie – a humble American classic transformed by melted brie cheese and truffle sauce. The earthy brie and musky, pungent truffle sauce complemented the sauteed onions, which had a caramelised flavour. The homemade pickle slices brought a briny goodness and texture to the dish. The last one was Mexico Sunset, which brought together the best of both worlds – American and Mexican. A perfectly cooked, juicy grilled chicken breast piled with verdant, creamy guacamole and sour cream. Slicing the velvety richness of these toppings were the acidic juices from the pico de gallo. Adding a crunch were nachos – chips inside a sandwich – so rustic! If you’re not too hungry, we recommend the Butcher & Buns Signature Brioche sliders – mighty flavours of a burger packed in a tiny bite. Three are served per portion and you can choose chicken or beef. While I enjoyed both, my loyalty lies with the chicken version. It was juicy, savoury and herby. You can select any topping style. The last dish was the Butcher’s Secret Rib Eye. A 300g tender cut of Certified Angus Beef. We didn’t have to wrestle with our

steak. It had a rich, buttery and beefy flavour, which was further enhanced by the sides – a creamy corn and cheese dip and herb butter. The accompanying roasted potato wedges had a crispy skin and mushy insides – very home style! Butcher and Buns has an exciting ‘Sips’ menu featuring Instagramworthy milkshakes, iced coffees, lemonades, iced teas and soft drinks. You can make your own milkshakes by selecting your ice cream – vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or caramel; and milk – full fat, coconut or almond. There are a variety of shake styles to choose from. Nuts About U, which is peanut butter-based, came topped with a waffle cone, KitKat bar, whipped cream and caramel coated nuts. The glass had the same nutty rimming. The drink was thick and creamy, underlined with peanut buttery goodness. Candy Crush will appeal to those with a sweet tooth. Made with strawberry ice cream, it was one of the prettiest looking shakes I’ve ever seen. Floating on a bed of whipped cream and marshmallows was a cloud of pink candy floss, which, as we sipped, gently hovered over a rim of rainbow sprinkles. What’s The Schor!? is basically your good ol’ Oreo milkshake. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. A casual dining space with great music and straightforward food – what’s not to like! ✤

T

his month, thanks to the great team at Zayani Motors, FACT magazine got to experience HONGQI's new H9 Comfort luxury sedan. HONGQI is a luxury car make from China, now established in over a dozen foreign countries. It is determined to change the public perception of Chinese luxury, as well as to compete with prestigious brands like Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Exterior The designers have managed to create an old-school luxury cruiser with real presence, one that demands both the attention and respect of all those it passes by. In fact, Giles Taylor, the man who ran Rolls Royce’s design department for more than six years, had a hand in designing this outstanding vehicle. Demanding attention at the front of the elongated hood is a large chrome grille reminiscent of what one would find on a Rolls or a Bentley. A distinctive strip of chrome and red lighting runs from the centre of the grille, extending into the bonnet. We appreciated the modern nature of this illuminated strip as an alternative to a classic brand logo. At night, the H9 lights up. Along with the aforementioned red lighting of the logo, there is a long lighting strip that illuminates when the car is unlocked. The light flows from the centre point underneath the grille, all the way around the LED lights, culminating in the illumination of the Matrix headlamps. On its sides, HONGQI H9 shows its Welcome Lights in HONGQI Wings to illuminate the floor next the doors in red. Approaching the H9, we felt like a red carpet had been rolled out in anticipation of our arrival. The bodylines of this luxury sedan flow beautifully from the long hood, across the sleek flanks, to the fastback styling of the rear roof. Twenty-inch alloy wheels are available in three different style options and sit comfortably underneath the streamlined wheel arches. One of our favourite features of the exterior is the hidden door handles that only pop out when it’s time to open the soundless electric doors. At the rear, full length LED taillights draw the width of the H9 and illuminate in a pleasing fashion, whilst dual chrome-tipped exhausts finish off the exterior in style. Interior The H9 includes an impressive Electronic Courtesy System, allowing for keyless entry and multiple remote-control functions, along with easy mobile phone operation. Greeted by ambient lighting, it was clear that the lavish nature of the H9 continues inside the vehicle. We found the adjustable, ventilated, Nappa leather seats, complete with massage function, to be very comfortable. The electronically adjustable, multifunction steering wheel houses conveniently placed controls and feels good in hand. In the Comfort model, leather has been used extensively throughout the interior, along with plenty of chrome and Piano Black accents. With four interior colour options on offer, along with the 253 colours of the ambient lighting system, you can easily add your personal touch to the interior. 66

fact magazine

Plenty of leg, shoulder and head room is available for all occupants, especially for the two passengers in the back. The ventilated, zero-gravity rear seating with massage function, is designed to transport two passengers in ultimate comfort. With access to a multi-function control panel located on the centre armrest, occupants can adjust settings to optimise their comfort levels. Additionally, we love how the large panoramic sunroof lets in an abundance of natural light and adds to the already spacious feel of the interior. With a storage capacity of 370-litres, the luggage compartment is not the largest we have seen; however, it can comfortably house a couple of carry-on bags. The fact that it is operated electronically adds greatly to its appeal. Infotainment & Technology The clean design of the infotainment system is minimalistic in nature, giving the setup a sophisticated feel. Included are two large touchscreens that have been beautifully integrated into the dash. One is for the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment screen. A small group of knobs and buttons located on the centre console helps the driver to navigate the car’s various infotainment functions. The H9 comes fully equipped with an array of further fancy features. These include an impressive head-up display, smartphone remote control, wireless charging, car wi-fi hot spot, GPS and a BOSE sound system, to name but a few.

Performance & Safety Performance wise, the H9 houses a six-cylinder, 3.0 litre Turbo engine. It produces up to 283hp and 400Nm of torque. Combined with its seven-speed dual clutch transmission, this luxury sedan can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 7.5 seconds. We found the H9 to be a vehicle designed for cruising as opposed to being a performance orientated option. However, don’t be mistaken, the H9 with its four driving modes is responsive, handles well, offers superior braking and provides a very smooth driving experience. The emphasis is not on high speed, it is on comfort, refinement and safety. A multitude of safety and assistance features have also been included to ensure the well-being of all H9 occupants. These include the ‘9H’ ultra-strong, cage-style design of the chassis, multiple airbags, lane departure warning, front collision warning and blind spot detection, amongst many others. ✤

y husband and I haven’t had the chance to go away for a honeymoon since we married two years back, so when the offer of a staycation experience at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, Manama came up, I jumped at the opportunity for a muchneeded weekend break. Located just over five kilometres from Bahrain International Airport (BAH), the hotel offers easy access to the city's commercial, shopping, and banking districts including fascinating local landmarks, cultural highlights and key business destinations. Arriving at the property, parking is easy and we are greeted with the warm smiles of the team. The lobby emulates a modern, trendy and urban design with hues of blue against traditional gold mashrabiya panels all around. A stunning blue tinted glass light feature drops down in the centre and a grand piano sits comfortably in the middle of the lobby seating area, creating the perfect social space. The property features 245 rooms for business and leisure travellers, complete with a well-equipped fitness centre, outdoor pool, kids’ activity and play area and a Zen-inspired spa. We make our way to the Grand Suite and as I open the door, we are greeted by a breath-taking view looking directly towards floor-to-ceiling windows facing onto the city skyline and sea with the glistening National Theatre right in front. As I turn around to take the tour of the suite, a thoughtful welcome note and a generous slice of cake sit

on the table wishing us ‘A Warm Welcome’, placed beside a soft delicate floral arrangement. The hotel continues to maintain strict Covid-19 protocols across important touchpoints, bringing a sense of calm to my slightly paranoid mind. The suite boasts a new interior feel, decadent furnishings and abundant space with historical local imagery adorning the walls. Offering a dining, study and living area with fullsized table and chairs as well as a deep-cushioned sofa and armchairs, the Grand Suite is an ideal space for longer stays or private business meetings. Next stop, the Master Room. Contemporarily designed, with an incredible floor-to-ceiling window that brought in the perfect amount of sunlight to the space, absolutely nothing could feel more relaxing than lying in the rich, plush king-size bed and watching the sunset – this I could get used to. Once settled we decide to have an early dinner at Mondo, the hotel’s chic Italian restaurant. On entering we are pleasantly surprised by the urban and hip furnishings. The upbeat music and funky wall décor dressed in foliage set the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. The team spoil us silly with a true Italian feast. As we savour every single morsel of food, the stars of the evening are the Frittura del Golfo (freshly caught, traditional deep-fried squid and prawns) and the Tortellini di Manzo (beef tortellini in a rich parmesan cheese sauce). We end this gastronomic adventure with a heavenly slice of creamy Tiramisu. After being well fed, we decide to take a quick walk around the property. Strolling along the long corridors, I am amazed to discover that they have their very own art gallery! Finding this little treasure really does make my day. Continuing the walk, I make my way to the outdoor pool and leisure area – and my oh my it is brimming with life. Kids jumping right into the pool, guests enjoying the sunset breeze and a swanky crowd winding down at the poolside Asian restaurant and lounge, BO.SABI – where the popular Friday Brunch is staged. I am tempted to linger but the bed is calling. As soon as I reach the room, I quickly draw a bath in the lush, cosily-lit bathroom, which boasts a separate shower and tub. Equipped with all the necessary bathroom amenities, it was a bit of struggle to make myself step out of my warm tub, but I know another busy day lies ahead. Jumping into the heavenly bed, the dazzling night views of the city are enough for me to drift away to sleep. Tempted to watch the beautiful sunrise, I awaken early and immediately find myself drawn to the armchair and coffee table placed near the window of the Master Room. Sipping on an espresso freshly brewed from our very own Nespresso Machine, I glance across the panoramic vistas of Bahrain and peacefully watch as the streets come to life. All too soon, we quickly pack our overnight bag and make our way to breakfast, which is hosted at Olivos Brasserie, located at the entrance of The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, fact magazine

Ready to indulge in a grand breakfast feast, the attentive and friendly staff quickly bring our order of coffee and juices. Time to explore the buffet! Taking a quick glance through it’s clear the hotel caters to a diverse range of guest preferences. From live cooking stations to fusion food, a freshly-baked bread section and a healthy breakfast corner – rest assured you won’t leave disappointed. I tuck right into my cheesy veggie omelette followed by my special order of freshly made, maple syrup drizzled, buttery waffles. I travel across to India with a South Indian favourite – Idli (soft steamed rice cakes) paired with a minty chutney and Sambar (stew made with lentils, mixed vegetables, herbs and a special aromatic spice powder). Full marks for this one! A dish of freshly sliced fruits brings an end to a perfectly scrumptious meal. Ready to take on the rest of the day, at midday I head downstairs to BO.SABI, the swanky Asian restaurant, for a raving Friday brunch. With bamboo-focused decor and a Bohemian vibe, the interestingly designed restaurant is absolutely stunning. Expanding to an outdoor terrace that faces a picturesque view of the pool and palm trees, this witty new location gives off all the right energy from first sight! Offering cold starters, an endless variety of seafood, live cooking stations, an international hot food counter, a dedicated carving station, freshly rolled sushi and a divine dessert corner, the brunch sets the tone for the rest of the weekend — carefree, easy going, fun and delicious! P

erched atop the mountainous Iberian Peninsula, Portugal, a South European country, has all the trappings of a tourist destination. However, you can enjoy the off-beat experience if you know what to do and where to go. We explore three important cities, each offering something different.

Lisbon The capital city of Lisbon is a good place to start. Steeped in culture, it’s adorned with breathtaking Manueline style (a gothic style incorporating nautical elements) architecture, an ode to the nation’s powerful maritime empire. The Tower of Saint Vincent, popularly known as Belém Tower, is a major tourist attraction. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it served as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon in the 16th century. Fashioned from lioz (an ornamental type of limestone) during the peak of the Portuguese Renaissance, it incorporates Manueline and other artistic styles. Overlooking the Tagus River, it’s composed of a hexagonal bastion and four-story rectangular tower; take the stairs to the second floor of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the river. Castelo de São Jorge, Carmo Convent, Sé Cathedral, Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, São Roque Church and Jerónimos Monastery are other architectural wonders to behold. Art lovers must pay a visit to the National Azulejo Museum, which houses the finest craftsmanship collection of blue ceramic tiles from the second half of the 15th century to the present day. The National Museum of Ancient Art has on display over 40,000 items spanning a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, goldware, furniture, textiles, ceramics and prints. Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is also well-known. While you can experience local fado music at the Fado Museum in the Alfama district of Lisbon, we recommend heading to a local cafe or restaurant; most have fado music playing – for free! You can also find musicians serenading passers-by with spontaneous street performances and small stage shows in Mouraria, a vibrant, multicultural neighbourhood in Lisbon. The genre is said to evoke a sense of nostalgia or ‘saudade’. Markets have been held in Lisbon for centuries. Housed inside an old-school iron structure built in the 1930s, there is one offering creations by top local chefs, as well as modern takes on rustic dishes. Looking for something more home-grown? We have you covered; LX Factory Sunday Market sells vintage clothing, art, handmade gifts and food; Feira na Avenida, a monthly flea market, is held during the second week on Avenida da Liberdade. Dubbed by the locals as Champs-Élysées, the avenue is close to highend fashion brands such as Armani and Prada and offers irresistible bargains – be brave, haggle! Lisbon has many food and produce markets too; wander around Mercado de Campo de Ourique and make a pitstop at the many gourmet food stalls, or head to Mercado Biológico do Principe Real for edible souvenirs such as home-made cakes, organic grapes, local honeys and cheeses. fact magazine

The Algarve While the weather is warm, even hot at this time of the year, the average temperatures don’t exceed 28 degrees during the day; evenings are generally balmy. Moreover, there’s respite from the heat courtesy of Atlantic Ocean. Home to some of the world’s best beaches lapped by clear waters and surrounded by scenic views, the coast of Algarve is a great place to soak in the European summer; Praia da Marinha near Lagoa town is surrounded by steep cliffs that offer a view of the blue expanse; the M Rock formation, also known as the Cathedral, is popular – when seen from the angle where it merges with other rocks, it looks like a heart – what’s not to love? Clear, turquoise waters offer the perfect setting for a snorkelling adventure. Boat tours and hiking trails across the sculptural rocks are also available. The Algarve is known for its rock formations; Benagil Sea Cave has a hidden beach and can be accessed via one of the many boat tours; you could swim or rent a kayak or standup paddleboard too. Dubbed one of Algarve’s best-kept secrets, Praia (beach) do Carvalho’s crystal-clear waters teeming with rich marine treasures make it an ideal snorkelling spot. Cliff diving is also common as are boat tours, hiking and rock exploring. Praia da Bordeira is popular with surfers and nature lovers. Located in Vicentine Coast Natural Park, it boasts dramatic nature; beautiful cliffs, deep valleys and a rich landscape that you can discover on the hiking routes. The neighbouring Praia do Amado is another surf beach to explore as is Praia dos Arrifes. 88

Praia do Barril and Praia de Cacela Velha are relatively quieter beaches, if that’s what you’re looking for. Being part of former fishing communities, they offer a spot of history. The Anchor Graveyard behind the beach pays tribute to the maritime heritage of Barril village; the charming Cacela Velha village has rows of Algarvianstyle fishermen’s houses in typical white with blue, orange or yellow highlights and there’s a 16th century church and fortress. If you’re looking for something more high-end, spend a day at Praia do Ancão, a Blue Flag- winner (the world’s most recognised award for clean beaches, marinas, etc.), which lies within the ‘Golden Triangle’ – Algarve’s most affluent resort hub. Part of Ria Formosa Natural Park, it’s backed by pristine sand dunes and pine trees. It offers a range of watersports from water-skiing and wakeboarding to stand-up-paddle and kayaking. Exclusive, private areas are also available. There are a number of dining options; the acclaimed Dois Passos serves mouth-watering, Algarvian tapas – or petiscos as the Portuguese say – and Mediterranean flavours using fresh fish and crustaceans sourced daily from the local markets. A seafood haven, Portugal is home to many restaurants serving the treasures of ocean; Polvo à Lagareiro is a popular dish made with octopus that’s been cooked in generous amounts of local olive oil, it has a unique fruity and slightly bitter taste and is served, baked or roasted, with potatoes. Portuguese codfish and sardines are revered by locals and tourists alike. fact magazine

• TRAVEL

Porto Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá is a hearty codfish casserole created in Porto; there are other bacalhau variations such as bacalhau à Brás, which is said to have originated in Bairro Alto, an old quarter of Lisbon; bolinhos de bacalhau or cod balls are a popular petisco item. Sardinha Assada (grilled sardine) is a standar, classic main dish. Tripas à Moda do Porto (Tripe Porto style) is another one to sample. Francesinha is the most popular native snack; typically served with chips, it’s a sandwich piled with wet-cured ham, linguiça (a seasoned smoke-cured sausage), fresh sausage such as chipolata, and steak or roast meat and buried under melted cheese and a hot, thick, spiced tomato sauce. Bifanas a Moda do Porto is a meat sandwich made the local way – variations with different marinades are made across cities. Porto is known for its vibrant nightlife. In the evening, Ribeira district lights up with its many lively bars; the nocturnal beasts best head to Galerias de Paris street, which is known for its party scene. During the day, explore one of Porto's most beautiful neighbourhoods, Praça da Ribeira; a historical city centre and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Cais da Ribeira, a riverfront promenade; a charming picture postcard neighbourhood with pastel houses and cobblestone streets. Tuck into delectable gastronomic delights by the riverside. The restaurants serve some of the best petiscos and local fare. Sip on the national fortified beverage, an internationally renowned grape made in Douro Valley and conventionally paired with dessert. Afterwards, take a boat tour across the Douro River. Vila Nova de Gaia is peppered with cellars offering tours and tastings.

Sweet Nothings Popular Portuguese desserts to try include Pão de Ló (sponge cake). It’s what the locals call ‘conventual desserts’, meaning pastries that were made by nuns living in convents and monasteries in the 15th century, which have now become a part of the local cuisine. They were made with lots of egg yolks and large amounts of sugar, as well as almonds and cinnamon. Some others include Queijadas de Sintra and Queijadas de Évora – both cheese tarts, Tíbias de Braga – puff pastry with cream filling and dusted with powdered sugar, and Sericaia – egg pudding. No trip to Portugal is complete without trying the iconic Pastel de Nata or egg custard tart; creamy custard in a flaky pastry shell with a hint of cinnamon, it’s divine when paired with Portuguese coffee. Said to have originated in at the Jerónimos Monastery in Santa Maria de Belém in 1837, they were baked and sold by monks who were expelled during a revolution in 1820, as a source of livelihood. They became popular when a small store attached to a sugar refinery began selling them to visitors. Chocolate salami is another intriguing one; it’s made with Maria biscuits coated in dark chocolate – though variations with nuts are also made – and the marbling effect is what gives the dessert its name. Portuguese almond tart and cake are equally divine – the country is a top almond producer in Europe. ✤ 90

Love Death + Robots Need to Know:

Love Death + Robots is a collection of short stories from various world-class animators and storytellers. It spans a variety of genres, including horror, fantasy, dark comedy and science fiction. The series is adapted from the 1981 five-part animated series titled Heavy Metal. The recent release is volume three and it doesn't disappoint.

Creators: Tim Miller, David Fincher, Jennifer Miller, Josh Donen

Cast: Joe Manganiello, Rosario Dawson, Seth Green

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Stranger Things is a very popular show, and for good reason. The way the Duffer brothers portray the characters, setting and plot are extremely striking. Season four has to be one of the best with lovable characters returning, such as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), as well as new characters to adore, such as the metalhead leader of the Hellfire Club, Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn). The new season brings us more mystery as we’re introduced to a new villain who the gang must attempt to defeat. The season also focuses much more on Eleven's past in the Hawkins Lab, which clears up many quesions around her. The characters are well developed, and it's hard to keep yourself from getting attached to at least one of them. The visuals of the upside down are chilling and fascinating as always, and it's impossible not to love the '80s references. And, once again, season 4 delivers in the music department with another great soundtrack. Overall, this is most definitely a must-watch, both for being an incredible show as well as a pop culture icon

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Everything about this series is absolutely captivating and it's definitely worth your time. With each episode being made by different animators, you're sure to be amazed by the distinct animation styles. From cartoony colourful designs such as in The Very Pulse of the Machine to the realistic and fluid movements of characters in The Vaulted Halls Entombed, there is something for everyone's taste. Each episode is its own story and with the run time of each spanning anywhere from seven to 20 minutes, it's fascinating to see how well each narrative is developed and portrayed. Even though the viewer does not spend much time within each world, you'd be surprised how immersive and beautiful each episode is. The stories are all well crafted and fascinating, from thought-provoking, hilarious or just bizarre. Love Death + Robots is a fantastic and outstanding series that is unique and well made.

This Is a Photograph By Kevin Morby

Blue Skies By Dehd

Memphis has been the musical muse to many a legend; Johnny Cash in the ‘50s, Isaac Hayes in the ‘60s, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King…the city’s air is heavy, sombre from pandemics, massacres and assassinations, untimely demises… drawing inspiration from this backdrop, singer-songwriter Kevin Morby has created this introspective album, his seventh studio record, “up in the Peabody”, Memphis’ historic hotel. The LP starts off with the Intro; snatches of conversation between mother and child set against tape fuzz and bird song set the tone – that of nostalgia. The first line you hear is “This is a photograph, a window to the past”. Inspired by the artist’s experience of holding a photograph of his father as a young man in his childhood home of Kansas City, the title track picks up momentum gradually; A Random Act Of Kindness follows the same slow tempo build with a spectacular finish. The LP features lyrics that are intense, visceral, inspired by themes such as life, love, death, memories, youth, dreams… “There was a time when you were mine” on Bittersweet, TN, featuring Nashville indie folk singer-songwriter Erin Rae; “All of my life Just trying to be like my father” on Rock Bottom; “I was dreaming of the past Oh, just to make the bad times last” on Five Easy Pieces; “I miss the good times, Mama” on Goodbye to Good times… Each song is a snapshot, fully realised with strings, banjo, flute, piano, horns and Morby’s tightly-knit band.

Youthful, carefree and evoking a range of emotions; produced by the band’s singer and guitarist Jason Balla, mixed by Grammy-awardwinning engineer Craig Silvey, and mastered by Heba Kadry, Blue Skies retains the spirit of Dehd’s 2020 release, Flower of Devotion. True to their sound, characterised by reverb-heavy guitar, blunt drumming and the use of idiosyncratic vocals, which include drawls, call-andresponse, yelping and frequent use of counter-melody, Dehd, the American three-piece indie rock band, offer an eclectic mix of song writing in this LP; slow and meditative cuts such as Control; toe-tapping tracks such as Bop; punchy numbers such as Clear… every song in this road-trip rock album has a hook. The lyrics are casual and work well with the light-hearted narrative of the album; the themes, however, address grown-up issues. Likewise, the album’s cover art— perhaps, a take on a child’s butterfly sketch — seems to advertise that despite the songs’ occasional delving into very grown-up issues, this is play manifesting as music. All in all, short and catchy tunes will keep you entertained throughout. Bassist Emily Kempf, guitarist Jason Balla and drummer Eric McGrady all share singing duties – though Kempf remains their life force – and retain their carefree punk-meets-pop style, making Blues Skies the perfect summer anthem.

By Hanya Yanagihara A bold novel that explores themes of love, fear and the dream of utopia. Divided into three time periods and exploring the lives of three couples, the book starts in an imagined version of 1893 New York where an heir of a notable family drifts towards the beckoning melodies of a music teacher, despite an arranged union to a suitor. Jumping to 1993 Manhattan, a young Hawaiian is troubled by a failed partnership with an older and richer man, unable to disclose their true feelings and past trauma. And lastly, in 2093, a time rocked by countless illnesses and totalitarian regimes, the granddaughter of a famous scientist attempts to manoeuvre through her life in his absence as well as solve the mystery behind her husband’s disappearances. What We’re (Still) Talking About Old Is Gold, Or Not

My Heart Will Go On…

Panty Politics

A TikTok video that has gone viral mentions ‘oldies’ and shortly after clarifies, “like those born in the late ‘90s”. It has garnered a massive response mostly from millennials who have shared their reactions to the video – shock and, if we may, denial. For those who don’t know, millennials or Gen Y are those born between the early 80s and 90s. Most of them seem to be horrified by the opinion (or fact!) that “the late 90s” means “oldies”

Titanic, the movie, is set for a fresh theatrical release just in time for Valentine’s Day next year. A remastered version will be available in cinemas in 3D 4K HDR and high-frame rate (smoother visuals). It means, in addition to being in 3D, it will be in a sharper resolution (4K) and offer a better screen experience with more accurate colours (HDR – High Dynamic Range). It’s a fitting tribute to this ‘90s romantic

At the heels of the hijab controversy in Karnataka, India, comes the knicker row. Protesting against historical information in school textbooks being tampered with, a students’ union burned chaddis, underpants in Hindi, outside a minister’s house. We’re told the union workers went from door to door, collecting briefs to burn (gross!). Soon after that, the opposition party launched a ‘burn the chaddi’ campaign, which seems to be a garbed (pun intended) attack on the rising

because then, what does it make them? Ancient? The reaction is deeply rooted in how ageing is perceived these days. The idea that it’s something to hide or be ashamed of. But growing older can also mean getting wiser, no? Calm down, Gen Y. Forty (or over 40) and fabulous isn’t such a bad thing! 112 fact magazine

drama, which has had the hearts of millions ‘going on and on’ for all these years. Another thing that’s gone on for a while is the debate on whether Rose could have saved Jack by letting him onto the wooden plank or not. Sweet Jack, dying for love. Now, that seems to be in keeping with Valentine’s Day.

communal issues in the country. ‘Chaddi’ is also used to refer to shorts. In this case, khaki shorts – trademark, so to speak, of a party with a bit of a reputation for communal politics. Now, we’re not against using humour to make your point but there are subtler ways, no? How we miss the days of classy politics when parliamentary speeches were delivered using poetry! These days, all we get is panty politics… sorry, we mean petty politics.

ISLAND INSIDER

Alper Kucukbaycan Complex Director of Operations, The Westin & Le Méridien Hotels, City Centre Bahrain

You have recently taken on your role. Please tell us what it entails. Complex Director of Operations at one of the biggest hotels in Bahrain is a role that involves a lot of time, dedication, passion for service, day-to-day follow up with clients, VIPs, projects and daily operations. A lot of interaction during the day with guests and subordinates especially on weekends, when we have a high occupancy.

What do you like most about your job and what aspect is the most challenging? As hoteliers, we should not stop creating new products to excite our guests that eventually enhance our financial performance. In today’s market, we have to be always agile and updated on market happenings, which can sometimes be challenging in the way that you need to dedicate a lot of time to this and convince your team to have the teamwork and dedication to bring projects and ideas to fruition. But, on the other hand, it gives a sense of fulfillment seeing the results, growing business and growing talents within the company.

After almost 20 years in the hospitality industry, what is the funniest or strangest thing you have encountered? Back in the day, in my post in Caribbean, hurricane season in that region was new to me and it certainly took a while to adjust. Also, working for a pre-opening with hundreds of people from different parts of the world all coming together to get a property ready to receive guests can be very funny and interesting. I have experienced this a few times in my career journey.
