visitor could find. So, we put our detective caps on and went in search of the things only locals know (p25). I must admit, I’ve been in Bahrain forever (well almost) and some of them were a surprise to me. So, I hope you enjoy trying at least some of them. You’ll also notice an abundance of motoring this month from new launches to great summer deals and, of course, our usual FACT test drives. This month we got behind the wheel of a brand-new Porsche and an unusual (for us) offering from Mercedes-Benz (p36). In the Listen Up section, you’ll find lots of great local news from new brands to the launch of a royal award and details of Bahrain Summer Festival which, this year, is going ahead online. As we came out of lockdown, we just had time to collect some of the best dining deals on the island (p60) and sneak in a quick staycation (p72) to keep you up to date with what’s happening on the hospitality scene. And, as usual, you’ll find our regular picks from the worlds of books, music and films. Some great, fresh summer fashion and lots more to fill the long days by the pool. Stay cool and say safe for a happy summer.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE CUP OF JOE We’ve all heard of farm-to-table, but this Bahrain-born business is bringing speciality coffee direct from the grower to your cup. If you’re a coffee lover who hasn’t heard of Beanboat, well, every day’s a school day. We’re here to tell you about a group of young Bahrainis who work directly with farmers in Colombia to bring their product here, where it’s roasted and distributed straight to companies, cafés and you. Co-Founder Saleh Sharif explains: “It started when a friend from Colombia, by the name of John Ciro, told us about his uncle, by the name of Hector. A coffee farmer in Colombia, he was having a hard time making ends meet in spite of working long and ruthless hours. We started the company to help out a friend's uncle, leading to other coffee farmers joining our community.” That was back in 2018 and, since then, more farmers have come on board and Beanboat now supplies a select range of coffees and accessories. The company is Rainforest Alliance-certified and organic beans are available. The coffee is sourced in Colombia and everything from marketing to roasting is done through this small team. Saleh continues: “We don't have any suppliers, so to speak, we deal with the coffee farmers directly. Our team in Colombia comes from coffee farming families and has a deep understanding of different varieties of speciality coffee. Beanboat's business model shifts the profiting entity from the middle man to the farmer, whilst providing a cheaper end product to the consumer, owing to a smooth post-harvest process carried out by our team in Colombia. “We have six team members, four are working in Bahrain and two in Colombia. “We launched Beanboat in early 2018 and, for about a year after that, we tried out different business models to nail the one that worked in favour of the farmers and was also feasible for our customers to use.” In 2019 Beanboat offered its first subscription service in 20

fact magazine

Bahrain allowing offices and individuals to pre-order their box of deliciousness right to their breakfast tables. And, all along, the welfare and profit of the farmers has stayed as the founding principle. And there’s more to come. “We are currently working on our marketplace platform that facilitates easy and detailed filtering of coffee specifications and allows documents and traceable electronic quotations straight from the farmers. This will allow our B2B buyers to keep a track of the harvest timelines, the varieties available at each farm, the prices, and the expected quantity of the product. It will help the buyers book or buy their products straight from the farms and avoid all the extra costs and charges added by the middle man, helping the farmers make the most of the profits. We’re streamlining the process of coffee trade through an online platform that offers efficient and directtrade capabilities. “We'll soon be expanding our operation in other coffeegrowing origins and will also be expanding our operations into Saudi Arabia by the end of the year.” ✤

T

his month we’ve been investigating. We're the Woodward and Bernstein of lifestyle, the Holmes and Watson of entertaining attractions, the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys of cool cultural experiences. But, enough of that self-aggrandising nonsense. What we mean is, we’ve been snooping about undercover to uncover some of the most interesting and unusual places and adventures in the Kingdom. And we’re sharing them with you over the coming pages.

FOOTIE WITH A DIFFERENCE If you love both golf and football, why not combine the two with a game of Foot Golf at The Royal Golf Club, home of the Kingdom’s only grass course? It might sound a bit mad but apparently players observe the rules of golf but using a football. Certainly sounds like fun. And, if you’re not up for that and still want to get a round in without frying in the sun, you can play regular golf at night on the floodlit courses, perfect for the hotter months. GO: Call 1775 0777 for more information.

RACING CERT It seems logical in the horse-loving Middle East, but we’d been here years before we discovered the Rashid Equestrian & Horse Racing Club. Founded in 1977 it’s easy to locate, once you know it’s there, between Sakhir and Riffa. There are two turf tracks of around 2,400 metres and a 3,000-metre sand track. There’s also grandstand viewing for 3,000 people and. on a busy race day, you will find whole families there enjoying the great atmosphere. Bahrain International Trophy was founded in 2019 to showcase the very best Bahraini horses with international visitors also on the tracks, so it’s a prestigious day out in November. Racing usually takes place between November and April and though there’s no betting you can try to predict the winners. GO: Call 1744 0330 for more information.

STEP INTO THE WILD Talk about islands around Bahrain and everyone thinks of Jarada, the tidal island much loved by boat owners, and Al Dar, an offshore haven for sun seekers. But head a bit further afield and you will reach the Hawar Islands which are a haven for wildlife fans with their rich biodiversity. Here you’ll find one of the world’s biggest colonies of Socotra Cormorants as well as native animals such as Arabian oryx and sand gazelle. Plus, you can take a boat trip out into waters that are home to a wide range of marine life, including the largest population of dugong outside of Australia. There’s a hotel on the main island, make it a holiday break. GO: Call 1764 1666 for more information. 26

PEARLY KINGS AND QUEENS For more than 2,000 years Bahrain’s pearls have been prized as some of the best natural pearls in the world! In the past pearl divers went out to sea for months. They were lowered on weighted ropes and remained underwater for over a minute with nothing but a nose peg to control their breathing. Thankfully, these days it’s a whole lot easier to find a genuine Bahraini pearl all of your own. Scubalife offers you the opportunity to hunt for pearls right here in the amazing waters of Bahrain. Professional instructors will guide you through the experience and you will have the chance to collect up to 60 oysters that you open on the boat in the hope of finding The One. Of course, there are no guarentees that you will find pearls, but the expert guides will do their utmost to take you to the best locations. And, when you do, the feeling is amazing. And, if you’re going to do that, The Museum of Pearl Diving's building is regarded one of the most important and historic buildings in Bahrain, since it was the location of the Bahrain Courts prior to becoming a museum. GO: Call Scubalife 1700 3636 for more information.

TURNING JAPANESE A traditional Japanese tea shop might not be the first thing you’d expect to find in the middle of Manama, but head for Chawan and prepare to be surprised. Found close to Andalus Gardens, it’s been described as being a little piece of Japan which is based on the 500-year-old Way of Tea. A Japanese tradition, where life with tea is a mindset of appreciating the little things in life, connecting with nature, and being in the moment. It offers traditional tea ceremonies, pairing tea with handmade Japanese sweets, and also offers a Kimono experience (the traditional Japanese garment and dress of Japan), as well as shodo (Japanese Calligraphy workshops). GO: Call 3991 7719 for more information.

THE HOUSE THAT PEARLING BUILT No, we’re not talking about The Pearling Trail, though that definitely deserves a visit (or several) but another historical house that you really should see which tends to get forgotten. Head towards Manama Souq and take a browse at the Khalaf House or Bait Khalaf, one of the few traditional pearling merchants’ houses to be found in the Kingdom. The house was built by Bahraini pearl merchant, Mohammad Salman Khalaf, 100 years ago. It was presented to Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities by his family and turned into a landmark representing the Kingdom’s strong historical connections to the pearling industry. The members even have lookout points around the island to observe significant space events. GO: Visit https://stargazersbh.wixsite.com/bsac for more information.

VOLUNTEER They say giving back is a great way to feel better and we couldn’t agree more. There are multiple charity and aid associations across Bahrain that can always do with an extra pair of hands whether it be help with fundraising, general admin or more hands-on activities at one of the various animal rescue organisations. Walk dogs at the BSPCA or BARC (Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre), foster felines for Rescat, as they get ready to travel to their forever homes overseas; or simply just spend some time socialising with rescue animals to help them become more homeable. There are plenty of ways to make a difference. GO: Call BSPCA 1759 1231, BARC 3944 6907, Rescat 3711 9590 for more information. 30

BAHRAIN COWBOYS

RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY

No, we’re not joking! As you’ll have, no doubt, discovered by now, Bahrainis love horses and find lots of ways to share their lives with their equine friends. From racing and endurance to simply hopping on for a trot round the block. However, the Bahrain Cowboys are a group apart. They’re a collection of riders who dress in Western gear, often riding on traditional Western saddles and adorned in cowboy hats. The best place to encounter them, certainly during the cooler months, is at Nurana Island, off the coast near Karranah, on a Friday afternoon. While you’re there, at low tide you might also spot flamingos and other wading birds who swoop in to take advantage of the food-rich sands. There’s no official contact for the Cowboys but there is a shop selling all the gear and they pop up on social media from time to time.

Yes, Bahrain is a Muslim country but it’s also known for its tolerance and religious diversity. And this is no better demonstrated than at the Hindu Shrinathji Temple which was established in Manama in 1817! The temple is dedicated to Lord Shrinathji, a form of Krishna manifested as a seven-year-old child. It’s the oldest Hindu temple in the Gulf and can be found down a narrow alley in the heart of Little India, in Manama Souq. A gate opens into a courtyard overlooked by a painted two-storey building with decorated Indian elephants marching beside colourful red, yellow and pink floral patterns. In the courtyard, shrines with images of Hindu deities sit in the open as worshippers pay their respects. GO: Call 1725 6131 for more information.

HOP ON BOARD CHECK MATE Take the opportunity to play chess with giant pieces on the oversized outdoor board at Bahrain Bay Park – it doesn’t matter if you’re not very good, it’s a great space for pictures and a lot of fun too. While you’re there, make sure to check out the giant artworks, graffiti under the bridges and hidden installations in the small green spaces and pay a visit to The Art Space, a gallery, creative hub and café in Bahrain Bay Wharf where you’ll find works by local creatives and an ongoing events calendar. GO: Call The Art Space 6665 5505 for more information.

MANGROVES, MANGROVES We know we’ve talked about this before but it’s so good we’re mentioning twice, particularly with the Kingdom opening up after lockdown and the prospect of tours being back on again in the near future. You’ll discover truly unforgettable sights and experiences on a Mangrove Tour at Tubli Bay which features a great mix of well-protected green mangrove forests. It’s a one of a kind eco tour to explore Bahrain’s natural world. GO: Visit https://portal.btea.bh/mangrove for more information.

TAKE A VILLAGE WALK OK, maybe not in the middle of summer but, when the temperatures cool, it’s worth putting your best foot forward for a stroll along the Nakheel Highway. Make sure to dress conservatively as you will be passing through traditional Bahraini neighbourhoods. As you reach Karranah you’ll find a wonderful shop, which is more-or-less a large traditionally-fired oven behind a hatch, where local breads are sold straight from the oven – it’s your reward for the energy you’ve expended and some of the best bread you’ll find in the Kingdom. In the early morning, you can spot it by the queue outside!

DRIVE THROUGH THE OILFIELDS Perhaps not an obvious one but we know it’s really off the beaten track since, when we go there, we barely see another soul and, in the dusk or very early morning light, it’s actually quite eerie. Head to Riffa Views and drive straight on past the golf club and you will find yourself out in the desert – but don’t worry, the roads are good and it’s pretty well sign-posted. You can follow the road all the way down to the edge of the Bahrain Defence Force training ground close to Durrat Al Bahrain, or there are a number of offshoots that will take you back onto main roads. Make sure to take plenty of water in case you break down but, rest assured, if you do decide to get out of your car for a few minutes to look around, a friendly local will soon stop to make sure you’re OK and not stuck. 34

T

here are few joys greater in life than getting behind the wheel of a truly exceptional vehicle. Well, that’s how we motorcar enthusiasts feel anyway. When we at FACT magazine found out we were to receive the keys to the 2021 Porsche Panamera compliments of the outstanding team at Porsche Centre Bahrain, we knew we were in for a treat. However, having test-driven many exceptional Porsche models over the years, the bar had been set very high and we were excited to find out how the new Panamera stacked up against them. As soon as the 2021 Panamera came into view it was obvious it has a sharper visual appearance and greater presence than ever before. The front end is now equipped with the previously optional Sport Design, complete with distinctive air intake grilles, large side cooling openings and an adapted single-bar front light layout. Additionally, the light modules of the dual front lights are now set much further apart. At the sides, the powerful yet sleek lines of the new Panamera flow effortlessly from front to back with the 21-inch wheels, available in 10 different designs, adding to the robust stance of the vehicle. The sides-sills and rear spoiler lip are finished in the exterior colour, creating a distinctive contrast against the high gloss black finish of the front air intakes. The rear light strip has been revamped and now runs seamlessly over the luggage compartment lid with an adapted contour, gracefully linking the two newly designed LED tail light clusters to create a single element. The exhaust system is harmoniously integrated into the newly designed rear apron, with the eyecatching diffuser fins rounding it off in style. As we slipped inside the cabin of the new Panamera, we were greeted by loads of space as well as the supportive, eight-way adjustable comfort seats that can be easily adapted to the needs of the driver and front passenger. The overall feel of the interior is one of ambience, with all materials, trimmings and finishes being of the highest quality. The optional panoramic sunroof adds to the already spacious feel of this luxury sedan as does the ample head, shoulder, and leg room available throughout. The luggage compartment can hold 495 litres, a total that increases to 1,334 litres with the rear seats folded down. The new Panamera is now equipped with sports type C USB ports as standard and can be used to charge compatible devices with a power of up to 15 watts. The cockpit has been ergonomically orientated towards the driver, giving it a genuine sports car feel. The new multifunction sports steering wheel feels great in hand and comes complete with shift paddles and a rim finished in smooth leather. The driver is offered almost unlimited assistance by the Porsche Communication Management System (PCM) which incorporates new digital functions and services including Voice Pilot online voice control, Risk Radar, Radio Plus or wireless Apple CarPlay. The range of Porsche Connect services has now been extended to include a multitude of assistance features especially designed to ensure your driving experience is as easy and impressive as possible. Once out on the roads, we had the privilege of experiencing what this remarkable vehicle has to offer under the bonnet. Our Panamera houses an impressive V6 biturbo engine complete with petrol particulate filter. It has a maximum power output of 243kW at 5,400 – 6.400rpm and a maximum torque of 450Nm at 1,800 38

– 5,000rpm. This translates to an acceleration of 0–100 km/h in around 5.5 seconds and believe us when we tell you that this motorcar can move! Boasting a steel suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), this car effortlessly absorbs the bumps of any and all terrain it encounters and ensures one comfy ride for all occupants. With a premium braking system, great traction control and exceptional manoeuvrability, we enjoyed every moment of our new Panamera experience and spent as much time as we could putting it through its paces. The expert designers at Porsche have made sure to incorporate a wide array of safety features to ensure you and your loved always arrive safely at your chosen destination. These include Lane Keeping Assist including road sign recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control, Night Vision Assist, Lane Change Assist, Park Assist including Surround View, Head-up Display, multiple airbags and so much more. All-in-all we found the new Panamera to be a great inclusion to Porsche’s legacy and we highly recommend that anyone looking to purchase an aesthetically pleasing, technologically advanced, performance orientated and practical vehicle give it a try. ✤

THE NEW V-CLASS OFFERS PERFORMANCE AND PRACTICALITY

Mercedes-Benz once again prove they are capable of producing a first-class vehicle in any segment of the market. 42

W

e don’t try to hide the fact that MercedesBenz is amongst our most favourite premium motor vehicle brands, and why would we? For many years now we have been enjoying this manufacturer’s outstanding offerings and have had the privilege of test driving several different models over that time. From coupés to sedans, from SUVs to luxury sportscar models, we have revelled in all that Mercedes has had to offer. We do, however, love it when we get to try something a little different. This month, thanks to the team at Al Haddad Motors, we got behind the wheel of a much larger creation, namely the 2021 Mercedes-Benz V-Class, and were pleasantly surprised by what this van has to offer. I’m not sure what we expected from the new V-Class but, as the vehicle came into view, we were instantly impressed with what the motorcar masterminds at Mercedes had managed to accomplish. The exterior has integrated some of the wellknown Mercedes-Benz design elements, expressed through the interplay of prominent lines and large, smooth surface areas. The bold front grille, complete with jumbo-sized Mercedes logo, sits perfectly at the front end in between the beautifully crafted LED headlights. At the sides, the forward thrust nature of the design is apparent with the body’s lines rising towards the rear, whilst the 17-inch, five-twin-spoke design, light-alloy wheels, fact magazine

• BEHIND THE WHEEL complemented by the pronounced wheel arches, deliver a sporty touch. The attractively designed rear end with large tailgate and contemporary LED taillights, ensured our exterior inspection finished on a strong note. Once inside, the 5.14-metre length of the new V-Class was even more apparent as the amount of room on offer was substantial, to say the least. Upfront, the two seats were exceptionally comfortable. Both are electronically adjustable and offer great lumbar support. The multifunction leather steering wheel is ideally positioned and felt very comfortable in hand. All the features and controls of the vehicle have been superbly placed making every option and function of the vehicle easily accessible. The exclusive look of the cabin, and indeed the rest of the vehicle, is assured through the use of only premium quality materials and for a moment we felt like we were sitting in a Mercedes S-Class. In fact, we only found one element of the interior to be less than perfect, namely the arm rest next to the driver’s seat. We found it to be a touch narrow and too short, a minor issue, but something we noticed none the less. The back of the vehicle provides the opportunity for a personal touch. It can fit up to eight people and you can decide if you would like one, two or three rows of seating. A cleverly designed seat rail system not only allows you to choose how many rows of seating you prefer, but also gives the option of placing the seating in a longitudinal direction, meaning two rows of seating facing each other. A further option is to remove the seating completely, instantly transforming this Mercedes into a transport vehicle for goods. In fact, with the new V-Class you will have from 1,030 litres to 4,630 litres of storage space available, depending on your choice of layout. The V-Class also features the Mercedes-Benz User Experience, MBUX. This exceptional multimedia system comes complete with a 10.25-inch touchscreen through which the driver can access all infotainment, navigation and communication features. Alternatively, these functions can be accessed through the Touch Control buttons on the previously mentioned multifunction steering wheel. Further highlights of this system include smartphone integration and a Bluetooth interface with handsfree function for telephony whilst driving. We found this system to be user-friendly and easy to navigate. Finally, it was time to see how this luxury van handles out on the road. Our V-Class was the standard model, equipped with a 2.0-litre, turbo engine that can produce up to 211hp at 5,500rpm and 350Nm of torque. This coupled with a sevenspeed dual clutch automatic gearbox, enables it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 9.4 seconds and to produce a top speed of 210km/h. Not bad for a van weighing in at over two tonnes! As we made our way around town, we have to admit to thoroughly enjoying the entire driving experience. The V-Class handles much like a normal Mercedes car and often we had to remind ourselves that we were in a van. The vehicle was not only manoeuvrable, but felt smooth, fast and responsive. The braking system effectively handles the weight of the V-Class and the cornering abilities of such a sizable vehicle were impressive. Mercedes have also included a large array of safety and assistance features to ensure the wellbeing of all occupants. ✤ 44

DESIGN-CENTRIC NEW MODEL The latest Kia Sportage sets new standards with inspiring SUV design. Images of the all-new vehicle show that both interior and exterior have been created with inspiration in mind. The exterior moves the Sportage identity into the next generation with tense, crisp lines that ripple along the refined body and clean, muscular surfaces coupled with intricate graphics to impart an assertive road presence. The front of the all-new Sportage creates a design statement from an elongated black Tiger Nose grille to the boomerang-shaped daytime running lamps and onto the distinctive head lights. The side profile stays true to its sports utility DNA, with taut lines cutting across pure, clean body surfaces. And, in a first for the Sportage range, a black roof – a different colour paint option to the vehicle’s body – is now available. At the rear, the design language is equally as strong with the new Sportage maintaining its strong road presence with its powerful broad shoulders and sharp lighting constructions. The car’s interior offers intuitive and innovative technology, to create a driver-orientated space that is truly state-of-the-art.

A sculpted, integrated, curved display with a slim crush touchscreen pad and finely detailed air vents form the nucleus of the cabin. The easy-to-use touchscreen pad, along with the advanced integrated controller, acts as the nerve centre for driver and passenger connectivity, functionality and usability needs. Finished with a high-end gloss, the driver and passenger console provides storage, operating system configuration, cupholders and soft-touch switches, the latter sitting on a raised profile alongside the shift-by-wire transmission dial. 5 OVER 5 •

How long have you been with Al Haddad Motors and what would you say have been the group’s most noteworthy achievements during that time? I started my journey as the General Manager of Al Haddad Motors in January 2018. During my time at Al Haddad Motors, we have seen several noteworthy achievements with regional and worldwide awards and recognitions including winning the second place in the Mercedes-Benz General Distributor Awards 2019. However, the most notable achievement is how the Al Haddad Motors company, management and employees have handled and adapted to the trials and tribulations of the COVID-19 pandemic on the business. The uncertainty and difficulty of the situation was met head-on by the team, with a determined collective outlook to persevere through the pandemic without having to make drastic sacrifices on staffing levels and salary cuts etcetera, we worked together to protect not only the business revenue streams, but to protect job security for all our work colleagues from all areas of the business. We understand Al Haddad is looking towards expansion of its brand representation. Please tell us what the future holds for the dealership? Unlike most business that decreased their business operations during the pandemic, Al Haddad Motors has continued with its five-year plan to expand its operations. In addition to being the sole authorised dealer of Mercedes-Benz in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Al Haddad Motors has acquired the franchise of the world’s leading international rental/leasing company, Avis. The company has also recently become the first ever franchisee of Topaz Premium Detailing, one of Europe’s leading car detailing companies. There are a few more expansions Al Haddad Motors

has planned that will be announced before the end of 2021, so watch this space! Your team has won multiple awards over the past few years. To what to do you attribute this level of cohesion and achievement? At Al Haddad Motors, our top priority is our people, we believe in developing our people to allow them to achieve the very best, it is our people who look after our customers across all areas of the business, no one revenue stream is more important than another. This philosophy has led to numerous customer satisfaction awards for both Customer Services and Sales areas alike. We were able to achieve these numerous awards through the Al Haddad Motors team’s dedication, determination and cooperation. We strive to make further improvements in the future to help us obtain the Al Haddad Motors vision in becoming the leader in the automotive industry in Bahrain as well as the leading Mercedes-Benz general distributor in the region. On a more personal note, what do you like to do when you are not working? Generally, I like to spend time cooking or enjoying some of the Island’s many restaurants and, as a consequence of this, the rest of my spare time is taken up training on my road bike, running and swimming; I think really, I am still kidding myself as to the success levels of the latter! And, if you could own any car in the world (Mercedes-Benz or otherwise) what would it be and why? I am holding out for one of the Premium Fly-Drive mobility solutions coming soon…✤ fact magazine

APP-LICIOUS What’s on the smartphone agenda for July?

Voilà AI Artist Have you ever wondered what you’d look like as a Disney character? Or perhaps your kids are obsessed with a particular franchise and would love to resemble their heroes? Well, the wait is over. A new app called Voilà AI Artist that allows you to transform into a super-cute, cartoon version of yourself has arrived and you simply can’t miss it with users posting their ‘Disney’ pics all over social media. Boredpanda.com even did a feature in which celebrities and historical figures were given the treatment and it’s great fun to see. The app uses artificial intelligence to create these 3D-looking cartoon characters. It did a great job, and we love it. And, if your taste doesn’t run to Disneylike cuteness, you can also turn your photos into stunning pieces of art such as Renaissance paintings or hand-drawn caricatures using a combination of human creativity and Artificial Intelligence. Take some time out during the summer holidays to engage in this with the kids or maybe even set up a family competition to see who can come up with the best image.

JAPANESE PERUVIAN FUSION Chef Jolbi Huacho of Clay explains his meteoric rise and passion for Nikkei cooking. 58

fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

What is Nikkei Concept in terms of food? And how did you progress from sushi to a more fusion style of cooking? Nikkei is a cuisine that was born in Peru thanks to Japanese immigration. It is based on Peruvian and Japanese supplies, respecting their techniques, culture and traditions. The end result is a mixture and explosion of flavours. However, this mixture is well balanced and that makes the difference. When I started in Nikkei cuisine, my goal was to develop as an Itamae - sushi chef. Nevertheless, as I gained more experience, I realised that the only way to exploit my full potential as a chef was to focus on fusion cuisine. This is because through innovation and blending of flavours and techniques, we can take Nikkei cuisine to the next level. You have achieved the position of head chef in just eight years. To what do you attribute such speedy success? I started my path cooking at a very young age, and I had the opportunity to work in restaurants in multiple countries.

These experiences were decisive for my training as a chef, so I always seek to get the most out of every opportunity that comes my way. I consider that one of my main virtues is discipline, but what makes me stand out is my creativity. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? I see myself as a prestigious Peruvian Chef known in the world in the field of Nikkei cuisine and also expanding the Clay brand in different countries. Please tell us about your signature dish. How was it developed and why should people try it? Black Cod Yuzu Miso Kosho, one of Clay's signature dishes, is made of miso, Japanese yuzu kosho and Peruvian chili peppers. We finish cooking the black cod in the clay oven and then we obtain a soft fish with caramelised miso sauce and a smoky flavour. It is served with a quinoa and edamame salad, which will provide freshness and a balance of flavours. ✤ fact magazine

EASTERN REALM Austria is an Alpine country best known as a winter destination. However, its summer colours and green mountains make this a tranquil and cultural destination for your summer holidays.

hen you think of this country, big furry cows in vast meadows come to mind. Located in the southern part of Central Europe, Austria shares borders with many European countries. They are Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The official language is German, but many Austrians communicate informally in a variety of Bavarian dialects. We usually picture Austria during wintertime with snowy peaks and cold weather activities. However, during summer, the country receives lots of visitors from Germany and Italy, with their motorhomes and bikes, to enjoy the array of bike tracks that you find in the south-western part of the country. The border between the three countries has many local roads that get packed with holidaymakers looking for a calm and scenic destination where they can be close to nature. Like its neighbour Switzerland (and the whole Alpine region), yodelling is part of the Austrian culture. With its own vowels and consonant combinations, it seems to be another language but is

mostly used in folk songs. Shepherds used it to call their animals and as a communication tool between villages. But if you are interested in learning it, there are numerous courses online and even a university offering a bachelor’s course majoring in yodelling. Yodel-lay-ee-dee! We are exploring the best things to see and do in three important cities in Austria, located in different regions of the country. Embark on this Alpine trip with us and enjoy a summer like no other.

Vienna Austria's capital is located on the country's east side, by the Danube river. The city is known for its Imperial palaces such as the Schönbrunn, one of Europe's most beautiful Baroque complexes and an unforgettable visit. The castle is composed of 1,441 rooms, but only some of them are open to visitors. The palace gardens span 186.28 hectares and can be visited for free. In the garden, you will find the detailed Neptune Fountain constructed in 1780. Nearby is a maze made from natural trees. Measuring 1,700sq/m and around 630m of hedges, you fact magazine

can face the challenge and search for the right way to the centre. The reward for the quest is waiting there in the form of an observation platform from which you can watch the other challengers tackling the maze. The garden has many attractions with restaurants and outdoor seating areas that are a perfect stop during summer days. The Vienna Prater is where you will find the famous giant Ferris wheel and many other carnival activities. Each ride has a separate ticket, and you can choose the ones you would like to hop on, from traditional carousels to modern rides. The park season runs from March to October, but the city's Wiener Riesenrad, the giant Ferris wheel, and a few other attractions are open all year round. The dining scene in Vienna is composed of many restaurants offering an array of international cuisines. However, the Wiener Schnitzel (a breaded and fried veal escalope) and Tafelspitz (boiled fillet of beef haunch) are world-famous and among Viennese cuisine's most popular dishes.

Innsbruck The capital of Austria's western state of Tyrol, this city is the hub of this part of the country. Innsbruck is known for its Imperial and modern architecture. The Nordkette Funicular is a cable car ride that takes you up to the Nordkette peak, which is part of Austria's largest natural park. With futuristic stations, it was

designed by architect Zaha Hadid and climbs up to 2,256m from the city centre. There are several stops on the way, and you can get off or continue to the top. At each stop, there is something different to do, from watching the skiers speed down the slopes to climbing on the rocky face of the Karwendel. A destination for skiing in winter and hiking or mountaineering in warmer months. At the bottom of the mountain, one of the most scenic photos is the colourful buildings in contrast with the green/snowy mountains in the back and the Inn River in front. During summer days, the colours of the houses pop brighter, while during the colder months, you can see the chimneys working day and night. Swarovski Crystal World is a magical place. For those who love the brand or love sparkling crystals, this is the place to visit. This attraction displays several outdoor areas, including a large, sculpted face and waterfall, a hedge maze, and some interesting indoor displays about Swarovski. The indoor displays or 'Chambers of Wonder' are dazzling and contain thousands of crystals, all created by a selection of visionary designers.

Salzburg Even if you don't count many trips around the sun (40 and above to be more exact), you must have heard of the film The Sound of Music, released in 1965. Starring the fabulous Julie Andrews, the motion picture had this city, bordering Germany, as the setting for its beautiful scenes. Salzburg is also Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birthplace, which you can visit, and the production centre for the Mozartkugel (Mozart balls). They are small round sugar confections (bonbons) made with pistachio, marzipan and nougat, covered with dark chocolate. The sweets are typical gifts and souvenirs when travelling to Austria. They were created in 1890 by Salzburg confectioner Paul Fürst. The Getreidegasse is a popular long street that runs in the old town and is a favourite shopping spot. The narrow road has many buildings altogether, with funky little windows and street vendors along the way. If you go during the colder months, you can buy delicious and fresh roasted chestnuts. The area also brings many eateries and cafés serving the best Strudel (a thin pastry filled with fruit, usually apples) that you will eat in Austria. The train journey from Vienna to Salzburg is a spectacle apart that can be enjoyed any time of the year. ✤ fact magazine

Everybody loves a good staycation, but FACT's Sara Waddah loves it even more when it means experiencing several different cultures all from the same room.

ituated in the centre of the island, the Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa resort facility is one that not only boasts an incredibly modern city location but that has consistently kept its reputation up for 50 years as a legendary five-star hotel. Arriving at the hotel, guests are welcomed into the extravagant ballroom-like lobby, from where one of the largest chandeliers you'll ever see dangles at full light – a welcome of truly royal and elegant proportions. The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa is actually one of the oldest hotel properties in the Kingdom, but as a result of regular updates and hosting and upholding some of the greatest services, its ongoing popularity seems to be without doubt and will never be forgotten. The Family-Like Staff From the second I arrived at the hotel, to my very last moments leaving the lobby, the staff at The Gulf Hotel Convention & Spa are not only taking all the necessary safety precautions to make sure that we stay safe – but they also continue to treat guests with attentiveness, compassion as well as top-notch service despite the challenges. I think this was definitely one of my favourite things about my stay. With the pandemic somewhat playing a role in alienating us from one another, not only did I feel completely comfortable in my environment, but the staff made it a point to let me know that anything I needed could easily be arranged. Variety From Around the World Quite literally being known for having one of the largest hotel food and beverage offerings in the Kingdom, the Gulf Hotel Convention & Spa currently consists of 10 different restaurants and lounges – each of them boasting top-class service and incredible culinary offerings. is friends know all about Ali Esbai’s success as a filmmaker – lots of them were roped in to offer help along the way. But, for much of Bahrain, he’s more commonly known as Ali Fingerz, awardwinning comic to be found opening for the likes of Omid Djalili and Maz Jobrani. So, just what took the Bahraini funnyman from the deserts of Bahrain to the streets of LA – and all the way back again? Ali had been doing stand-up comedy since his student days in Dublin, in 2005, and continued when he moved back to Bahrain in 2007. Within a year he had been chosen to open for Omid Djalili and was well on his way to becoming a regional star. Competing in The Funniest Person in Bahrain 2013 brought him into contact with a film crowd and at that point, he decided he wanted to be an actor. A call came from Muneer Al Busaidi and Tariq (Riq) Sharif to work on a short comedy, A Heated Interview, which was written and directed by Muneer and shot in the UAE where it was entered into a competition. The film triumphed but Ali realised: “It was funny but, if I had written it, it would have been funnier! That’s no disrespect to Muneer, I’ve said the same to him and we’re still good friends.” Realising his future lay behind the camera, in 2017 Ali was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study for a filmmaking degree in Los Angeles. “I wanted to be Muneer’s Sam Jackson, but I took a different path,” he laughs. “I thought I was going to be an actor, I wanted to be in front of the camera but I became frustrated at being a tool in somebody else’s story.” Every semester students had to work on five films, one of their fact magazine

own and the rest in various roles on their colleagues’ productions ensuring they learn every aspect of the filmmaking process from production design to directing. Ali continues: “The course ends with a thesis film. You fund it, write it and do everything on the film. I have to thank Rashad Faraj and Nawaf Kanoo [for funding] because it’s LA and you have pay to shoot anywhere – you even need a permit to shoot in your own property. It cost USD26,000 to hire crew etc. I had to tell them they would get nothing out of it. If it’s selected there’s a redcarpet screening at Warner, but that’s it. They said, it’s a donation to your film and an investment in you!” That film was Incarnate which went on to win the Fareed Ramadan Student Film Award at the Bahrain Film Festival. On the success of the film, he says: “To be honest, that was what I hoped would happen when I wrote the film – it’s a mix of local folklore and Midwestern horror. It’s a statement. I’m in Bahrain [after] learning to make films in Hollywood and I still [want to] to tell Bahraini stories. “To get the film made I just reached out to friends and, luckily, they came! Emira El Kooheji [an Instagram and TV personality] came out to LA twice at her own expense. We opened Malja together at the hosting ceremony back in the day and we often worked together after that. “And Reem Edan, an Iraqi comedian, is working in LA, she went to Nadeen School here, then moved to the US. Her mother got in touch on FB and got us back in contact.” Arriving back in the Kingdom just before Covid hit, Ali had a few comedy gigs lined up bringing him back in contact with Mahmood Alshaikh, they’d been school friends but never worked together. He, in turn, welcomed Ali into the Bahrain film scene and he [Ali] worked on a music video with DJ Outlaw and another for Flipperachi. “I conceptualised it with him, we wrote it together and we even filmed at Flip’s home – we couldn’t go anywhere 78

else due the Covid restrictions,” he says. The chance to get back to doing what he loves gave Ali the confidence to register for a CR to start doing work for hire while developing his own stories. He says: “People were calling me for jobs, so I decided to make it official, and I set up Wikkid Productions in July 2020. It has been a very lively journey since we started. There have been different projects and I’ve loved seeing people recognise the value of my work and that there’s a difference to it. People know me as the funny guy and for Capoeira [his other passion]. I was afraid that being the guy who makes people laugh or the acrobat…it’s not so professional. So, now, the comedian has grown into a filmmaker.” As well as doing some corporate video work, Ali is currently writing a full feature horror concept. “Yeah, I know, a comedian writing horror!” he laughs. “It will be a faith-based horror – a bit like The Exorcist is for Catholics – it’s about the supernatural stuff you encounter in Islam, such as jinn. It features a Bahraini psychiatrist who spends her whole career debating it [the supernatural] then encounters a patient she can’t help and realises there is more to life [than we see] – it’s like an onion made up of different layers.” And a future, so far top-secret, plan is also in the making. All we can say is it will feature his beloved canine and feline family members. Of the more distant future, Ali says: “In five years, I see myself doing what I do now but on a bigger scale. I’ve just established Wikkid Productions. In five years, I see it having different divisions, specialising in different areas. I also want to have a full feature film playing on platforms like Netflix!” And of the big change in his life, he concludes: “It happened through an obsession with constantly wanting to change things. I never liked what I did, always felt it was missing something and that’s what ultimately drives me to keep doing more.” ✤

Why Is It Worth Watching?

With Avengers: Endgame (2019) leaving us at a cliffhanger in Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) story, this is an absolute mustwatch for all of those who have been wondering what the next step for Loki is. With Tom Hiddleston returning to play the title character as well as new faces, this is Loki like you have never seen him before. Why Is It Worth Watching?

With the beautiful settings and interesting character designs, everything about this show feels magical. The story follows Gus (Christian Convery), a young human and deer hybrid, who must search for a new beginning in a post-apocalyptic world where 10 years prior, a virus decimated humanity. On his adventure, he encounters Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) and Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen), who help him find his way in this dangerous world. With the show being filmed in Auckland, New Zealand, you can expect beautiful scenery with incredible cinematography to accompany it. How to Avoid a Climate Disaster By Bill Gates

SPANISH LANGUAGE POP

ACOUSTIC POP

Revelación By Selena Gomez

Little Oblivions By Julian Baker

It took a decade to come to fruition,

From punk-rocker roots and the thoughtful acoustic confessionals of her first two albums – 2015’s Sprained Ankles and 2017’s Turn Out The Lights - to the current day multi-instrumental iteration of the artiste, Julian Baker is going places, emotionally and aesthetically with her music. In her latest album Little Oblivions she has gone bigger on production while simultaneously pairing down the personnel involved. She has embraced a richer more expansive soundscape, most evident on the bombastic opening track Hardline, and yet does this very much on her own. Thanks in part to the quarantine restrictions, Baker plays almost every instrument featured on the album, with minimal backing from anybody else. Less is more, it seems. The good news is that she maintains the lyrical honesty of the first two albums while taking the arrangement to particularly interesting new places. Her ‘lockdown project’ is an exercise in going big-band but staying true to the little things that count.

but Selena Gomez’s first Spanish album justifies the journey. The 28-year-old

singer's

EP came with

this

seven-song quote

from

Gomez “I think it will be worth the wait," directly referencing her 2011 Tweet "Can't wait for y'all to hear the Spanish record”.

In deference

to a language which had seemingly become just a childhood memory and not a contemporary dialect for her, Gomez met with a Spanish coach every day while recording the EP and she has achieved what she committed to in her desire to be precise and respect the audience. A more mature artist these days, Gomez bares her heart on Revelación and has the confidence to show her insecurities, as in Baila Conmigo, where she playfully channels the criticism that she’s not fluent in Spanish. The multi-dimensionality of the language and hip-moving looseness of the production works for Spanish and English audiences alike.

Since ‘retiring’ as the world’s richest man, Bill Gates has spent considerable time making a positive impact on the planet. In his new book, the tech philanthropist reviews a decade spent investigating the causes and effects of climate change. Microsoft’s founder takes a typically analytical approach to the challenges we face, but makes it palatable for anyone, offering clarity about the precise problems and how technology specifically can solve them. With insights from scientists, engineers, and political and finance analysts, Gates articulates the need to work towards net-zero emissions and the innovation available to achieve it. It’s a profound book that deserves ‘must-read’ status.

FICTION

My Year Abroad

by Chang-rae Lee Author Chang-rae Lee has a track-record of delivering compelling, award-winning fiction that explores the Asian-American experience. His latest novel – a 500-page piece of exuberance – My Year Abroad, is one of the most exciting fiction works this decade. Focused on the central character Tiller, a New York college student who meets an array of characters in a traveloguestyled narrative of the passive protagonist, the novel is filled with dark absurdist humour, as well as some sleight-of-hand suspense and surprise. Playing out as a commentary on Western tropes, Eastern stereotypes, global finance and even mentorship, at its core it’s a subtle critique of the American Dream gone mad. fact magazine

Balmessence

NEW &

Summer Nails Balmessence has come up with five top tips for great summer nails in line with the launch of this season’s new products: • Keep fingernails dry and clean to prevent bacterial growth beneath the nail. • Moisturise! Moisturising is a well-known must for healthy skin, but it’s often overlooked in nail care. • Leave your cuticles alone! It’s common practice to cut, push back or try to get rid of cuticles altogether, but cuticles are not the enemy. In fact, the cuticle is the nail’s natural protective seal. • Practice good nail hygiene. Use sharp manicure scissors or clippers and trim your nails straight across, then round the tips in a gentle curve. Use a gentle brush to clean under the nails, avoid the urge to dig in with a sharp tool. • Rethink your products. Avoid using nail care products containing harsh chemicals. Natural/organic lacquers are better for your nails because of the quality and the exclusion of many harmful toxins contained in traditional nail polishes. Check out the latest Balmessence nail products: Fedua Ultimate Gel Effect Nail Paint in Candy, Azure, Peach Blossom and Dandelion Yellow; Fedua Golden Jelly Hand Mask; Fedua Macaroon Anti-Ageing Hand Cream; Fedua Rose Cuticle Gel and Fedua Rainbow Cuticle Oil.

Catrice Cosmetics Poreless Perfection Powder Tired of unwanted shine when you’re out and about? Catrice can help. Among its latest line of products is the silicone-free pressed Poreless Perfection Powder. Boasting an extremely soft texture and a universal shade, which claims to adapt to individual skin tones, it melts into the complexion and makes small imperfections disappear. Perfect for the humid days to come.

Flormar Kiss Me More As the summer gets into full swing, we look forward to days lounging by the beach and pool. However, one concern that many of us have is our make-up not holding up well when exposed to heat. One solution to lipstick smudging and wearing off is Flormar’s must-have Kiss Me More collection. Gorgeous shades, rich pigments and lasting hold are what this collection is all about. Aptly named Lip Tattoos, you can’t eat, drink or kiss them away. With a smooth and creamy texture, these liquid lipsticks are easy to apply and, unlike other mattes, they do not dry out the lips. The Kiss Me More Lip Tattoo collection is made up of 22 shades including six new natural colours to suit every skin tone.

What We’re (Still) Talking About Tour de France

Great Barrier Reef

Sporting Personalities

So, finally spectators were allowed back at the Tour de France, the world’s biggest and most famous cycling race. Beforehand the riders had been saying they were looking forward to seeing the fans, whose presence has always been customary along the route of the road race. However, that fan-welcoming view may have changed after one woman, seemingly keen to send a poster greeting to her grandparents via the TV cameras and totally oblivious to her surroundings, stepped slightly into the road and caused the biggest pile-up in the event’s history! Horrifying images from the crash were all over the TV and social media showing the

The Australian Government is apparently up in arms after UNESCO said it planned to list the Great Barrier Reef as ‘in danger’. The reef is currently World Heritage listed with UNESCO citing it as ‘A site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. It contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc. It also holds great scientific interest as the habitat of species such as the dugong (‘sea cow’) and the large green turtle, which are threatened with extinction.’ However, in recent years there have been several instances of bleaching due

Love it or hate it, or somewhere in between, you can’t escape football at the moment as the delayed Euro 2020 tournament reaches its final stages. And even non-fans can’t have failed to be touched by the plight of Denmark’s Christian Eriksen as he fell to the floor during the match between Denmark and Finland on June 12. Many broadcasters, among them the BBC, have been taken to task for continuing to transmit live as the player failed to get up and medics were seen administering first aid chest compressions on the pitch. Unlike the story-hungry press, his teammates really stepped up, forming

And the UN accuses Australia, which has a significant carbon footprint due to exported fossil fuel emissions, of failing to protect this spectacular natural resource. Australia, on the other hand, says the decision is political. And, though not going so far as to outright accuse Beijing, China does chair the UN watchdog committee. We reckon it doesn’t matter who’s pulling the strings, the Great Barrier Reef is too important for politics.

a human shield around their fallen colleague, offering some much-needed privacy, and Team Captain, Simon Kjaer, was then seen comforting Eriksen’s frantic partner as the player’s life, seemingly, hung in the balance. Things did not look good as Eriksen was stretchered off the pitch but, thankfully, within hours he was texting his teammates and even demanding that the match resume. That’s some guts! The Danes, initially, had not looked particularly promising. But they went on to a rousing performance against Wales to secure a place in the last 16. As we’re going to press, they are due to play the Czech Republic on July 3. We wish them luck and if true spirit and teamwork has anything to do with it, they could just be the ones to watch.

Meanwhile the cause of the mayhem appears to have escaped injury free and now faces jail as well as being sued by the event organisers. If you ask us, she should pay double for abject stupidity! 88

Assistant General Manager Zayani Motors What first took you into the automotive world? I have had a general passion for cars since childhood. As a young adult studying in New York, I got affiliated with a group of friends who were obsessed with cars and performance, and I would say that was the start of my obsession with cars as well. We would spend most after-school hours working on our cars and competing against each other. Obviously, you can’t buy performance parts without money, which led me to start a part-time job selling cars at one of the local dealerships. Seventeen years later, the passion for automotive has nothing but increased. What do you consider the best part of your job? The ever-evolving automotive industry 90

itself is a very exciting part of this job. With the latest evolution of electrical vehicles, the dynamics of the car market will change massively over the next few years and keeping up with these trends is very exciting. However, on a day-to-day basis, the best part of the job for me is meeting new people every day. Since the nature of our business is such that most of these people tend to stay with us for years to come, this turns many of them into friends. We understand that MG is continuing to grow its market share across the region. What makes the brand so popular in Bahrain and the Middle East? The requirements of the modern consumer are not just design and performance; technology and connectivity have become
