Happy Holidays

Good grief how 2022 has flown! I don’t know if it’s just me getting older but the years seem to speed by in a blur, it feels like just a couple of months ago that I was preparing the New Year issue and now here we are, heading into 2023. But, before we do, there is much to enjoy with National Day and the festive season coming up. And, this year more than ever, the island’s hospitality industry is pushing the boat out to help us all celebrate. We’ve put together some of the best National Day dining and cultural events as well as a whole host of Christmas and New Year festivities – make sure you don’t miss our Annual Festive Giveaway with 25 days of great prizes. You’ll also find details of the winners and lots of pictures from our Fact Dining Awards. We headed to the brand-new Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort and Spa for a sparkling ceremony to recognise the best of the best in the Kingdom’s dining sector. There’s another celebration in this month’s pages too, as one of my lucky colleagues got to visit Camp Cayenne to mark 20 years of the iconic Porsche SUV, off-roading in Dubai’s mountainous Hatta region. Jealous, me? Not at all. Back on the streets of Bahrain, we also got to test drive the latest model from Chinese manufacturer Hongqi and taste tested lots of great food. We head to South Africa in the travel pages – that feature reminded me I really need a holiday. You listening, Santa? And the Society pages are chock full of events from around the Kingdom over the last month.

I hope you enjoy our last edition of 2022 and look forward to keeping in touch in 2023.

Wishing you a splendid National Day and Happy Holidays from all of us here at Team FACT.

IN HIS BONES

Jazz trombonist extraordinaire Jeff Bradshaw is coming to the Kingdom for a one-off show on January 13. We caught up with him to talk history, influences and playing with the greats.

Please tell us a bit about your musical beginnings and what drew you to the trombone, rather than any other instrument.

I started sitting on the front pew in church with my mother. Watching my father lead the gospel brass band. I was raised in the United House of Prayer Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I learned to play trombone because my father played it. He was my hero. He also was the person who taught me how to play trombone. By ear. I never went to school [for music]. Never went to college. I was a child prodigy. By the age of 11, I could play 15 instruments.

My influences will always start always with gospel music, jazz, blues and, of course, R&B. People like Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye. James Brown. But man, I'm a hip hop head at heart and being from Philly, I had so many people to look up to.

It’s been said that you wanted to make the trombone ‘cool’, what did you hear in the instrument that convinced you it should be able to take centre stage?

I always wanted to make the trombone cool because people weren't really into the trombone. It was a great jazz instrument that was pioneered by people like Fred Wesley, JJ Johnson, Slide Hampton, Curtis Fuller, those were truly some of my major, major influences. It was because of my father that I chose the trombone, the late Norman Bradshaw was the coolest, sharpest person I've ever met. I knew if I could be like him and play this instrument, the way he taught me with gospel spirituals, which

is the way that I learned to play instrument, I knew that I could take this instrument to another level, playing it as an extension of my voice.

You have played with some huge names. Is there one that stands out?

Recording with Michael Jackson, the song Butterflies which was written by Marsha Ambrosius, one half of the London duo Floetry, and produced by Andrew Harris, from Jazzy Jeff's studio. That was one of the great ones. But touring with Patti LaBelle, The Roots, with Jay-Z, Kirk Franklin, Dave Chappelle, Tyler Perry and many others. Man, those were some great times.

What can your Bahrain audience expect?

My Bahrain audience can expect a soul funk innovator, somebody who took a non-common instrument and soul, hip hop and funk music and plays it in a lyrical way that's never been done before. You know, they call me the Gerald Levert of Jazz, because he was one of my favourites but also because the big guys get love. Being 6ft 1in and 265 pounds, with a trombone, lyrically pronounced like an incredible soul voice – that's what Bahrain can expect. A Jeff Bradshaw party, like no other! ✤

NIGHTS IN MUHARRAQ

The city’s premier December cultural event gets underway.

The Muharraq Nights Festival, a major cultural event celebrating the Kingdom’s deep and rich heritage, has opened in Muharraq’s historic old quarter.

The festival is set to feature a wide variety of events at numerous venues across the city and is being held on two occasions (December 1 to 3 and December 8 to 10) from 5pm to 9pm.

The event is co-organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and the Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research as part of the Pearling Path project.

Taking place from Siyadi Majlis in the north to Qal'at Bu Mahir at the southern tip of Muharraq island, the celebration will feature a wide variety of activities such as musical performances, exhibitions, workshops, markets and much more across the many historic neighbourhoods.

Activities will be split into eight categories to appeal to a wide variety of age groups and interests: arts, design, crafts, food, music, cinema, activities and tours.

Tours are being organised around the Pearling Path, Fakhro House, Siyadi Majlis and Murad House, including a photography tour and a food tour to familiarise visitors with the city's historical and cultural sites.

Visitors at the festival can also stop by a variety of art studios and galleries, including the Busaad Art Gallery, Studio Anne Holtrop, Ta'a House and others that are scattered throughout Old Muharraq. The public is also invited to the Suq Nights in Amarat Fakhro I and II, where designers and entrepreneurs are showcasing their

original creations and goods that cater to a variety of tastes and interests. Additionally, they can check out the Suq Al Qaysariyyah, which has many newer stores and design studios.

Shops selling traditional swords, gold and jewellery, the world-famous Bahraini Halwa, woodwork, antiques, and Kurar embroidery will all be on display during the event.

The festival will also offer a variety of perspectives on eating Bahraini and contemporary cuisine at venues such as Suq Al Qaysariyyah, Archaeologies of Green, Siyadi Shop, House of Coffee, Lugmatina House and others from the city's rich cultural past.

At the launch, His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, said: “The Muharraq Nights Festival demonstrates the significance of the city as a local, regional and global cultural hub. It was the first capital of Bahrain, the largest pearl trading centre in the Gulf region and the cradle of Bahrain's literary, scientific and cultural movements.”

He highlighted the significance of the event and further appealed to the people of Bahrain to attend the festival, noting that it features activities for people of all ages and backgrounds, is great for families and will offer visitors a new perspective on the city of Muharraq. ✤ GO:

CAYENNE TURNS 20!

FACT joined Porsche to celebrate two decades of the marque’s first ever SUV with a trip to ‘Camp Cayenne’.
• REGIONAL RIDES
fact magazine 52 • REGIONAL RIDES

Thanks to an invitation from Porsche Centre Bahrain, we got to mark the 20th anniversary of the iconic Cayenne luxury performance SUV by taking to the mountainous terrain around ‘Camp Cayenne’ in the inland enclave of Hatta, Dubai.

This expedition was specifically designed to showcase the adventurous side of the Cayenne, giving all invited guests the opportunity to enjoy the original, first-generation sports luxury SUV in new surroundings and on different terrains – all in a controlled environment with professional instructors.

Camp Cayenne

On landing at Dubai International, we were greeted by our hosts and whisked off via shuttle to the hotel Hatta Dome Park, about an hour and a half away. Treated like royalty, we feasted in the evening and enjoyed a comfortable night’s rest at our venue. The following morning, we awoke ready to take on all the adventure the day promised to provide.

Hatta Mountains Off-Road

After a satisfying breakfast and a brief introductory press conference, we were shown to our designated 2002 model, E1 Porsche Cayenne, and headed straight for our first driving experience on the mountain roads.

Having test driven the original Porsche Cayenne model many years before, we knew as passengers, we were in for a real treat. However, it was only once the SUV was effortlessly powering its way along the mountainous twists and turns; dominating both the up and downhill sections of the road, that we could begin to fully appreciate the extent of this car’s impressive off-road capabilities. Despite the rough nature of the driving environment, we always felt well-supported in our seating, and never once felt any discomfort throughout the drive.

Hatta Mountains Tarmac Trails

Soon we were heading for more adventure in the mountains, this time on a tarmac road that wound its way through the highlands.

For a 20-year-old vehicle, this E1 SUV was equipped to handle just about any terrain, with a driving mode to suit almost every occasion. With the lesser challenge of negotiating paved roads, the Cayenne reminded us why it is known as a luxury vehicle, as we lapped up the abundance of comfort the SUV provided, taking in all the natural beauty gifted to us by our glorious surroundings.

The Gravel Roads of Wadi Showka

After a scrumptious lunch, it was time to head for the alluring region of Wadi Sowka. Famed for its beautiful landscapes, natural pools and abundance of hiking trails, we were priveledged to take in all the magnificence this area had to offer, all from the uber comfy vantage point of an origional Porsche Cayenne.

As we travelled along the local gravel roads, we simply sat back and smiled as the SUV once again displayed its outstanding handling abilities and near perfect traction control, along with the versitile driving modes it has to offer. Our driver always seemed to be in complete control of the vehicle, even travelling at higer speeds on this tricky terrain. A true testament to the Cayenne’s performance capabilities.

Desert Off-Roading in Maleiha

After some quick refreshments it was time to head for our final exhilirating ‘Camp Cayenne’ experience. This time our destination was Maleiha, a small town in the Emirate of Sharja. This region is well-known for dessert cycling, paragliding and dune buggy riding. This was to be the most challenging environment for our firstgeneration Cayenne, however, this luxury SUV once again proved more than capable of handling off-road terrain, even in hot desert sands.

fact magazine 53
REGIONAL RIDES •

We were actually surprised at just how well this older model Cayenne managed to negotiate what was little more than a sand trap for most vehicles. The powertrain setup combined with the correct driving mode ensured our SUV provided yet another commanding performance. And the luxurious interior and effective climate control meant we stayed cool and comfortable.

More Than a Road Car

After a second lovely evening and night at Hatta Dome Park, we were shuttled back to the airport, to catch our plane home. On the return flight we had time to contemplate just how impressive the Cayenne is and in fact, has always been. More than just a luxury on-road SUV, the Cayenne range is a more than capable of handling off-road adventures; designed to deliver a powerful yet posh performance in all environments. We would like to thank Porsche Centre Bahrain for including us in this memorable occasion. ✤

INTRODUCING THE HONGQI HS5 DELUXE 4WD

FACT magazine spent the day in the new HONGQI HS5, a vehicle that delivers a level of luxury and refinement usually reserved for cars with a much higher price tag.

This month, we were privileged enough to get behind the wheel of the 2023 HONGQI HS5 Deluxe compact luxury SUV, thanks to the team at Zayani Motors. Having already experienced the opulent HONGQI H9 Sedan earlier this year, we had high expectations for the brand’s latest lavish offering.

HONGQI is a Chinese luxury car marque, established in over a dozen foreign countries, and is becoming more popular by the day. It’s determination to change the public perception of Chinese luxury, as well as to take on prestigious brands like Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW is showcased through every new model. One or two of their premium creations are even vying for a place at the table with the prestigious Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands.

Exterior

The moment we laid eyes on the new HONGQI HS5 we remembered why we were so impressed with HONGQI during our last encounter with the brand. The front end of the 2022 model displays a prominent chrome front grille, along with sculptured Matrix Intelligent LED headlights, daytime running lights, and front fog lamps. The chrome red stripe, that is HONGQI’s emblem, runs from the front and centre of the bonnet all the way down to the grille. The flanks feature body-coloured, power folding and movable

side mirrors, with integrated turn signals, along with stylish 20inch wheels. Bold exterior lines and subtle chrome elements are located all around the body, adding further touches of class to an already grand appearance. At the back end, Matrix LED rear lights, a rear licence plate light, a roof spoiler with a third brake light, along with the dual exhaust system, all work together to create truly handsome hind quarters.

Interior

The HONGQI HS5 comes in three variant levels, namely the Comfortable 2WD, the Deluxe 2WD, and the Deluxe 4WD. We were fortunate enough to experience the top-of-the-range 4WD version. Greeted by ventilated front seats, 12-way adjustable with memory function, we had the perfect position from which to take in the upmarket interior. These seats are upholstered in Napa and Alcantara fine leather, complete with diamond stitching. The multifunctional steering wheel felt just right in hand and is equipped with a sound system, Bluetooth, a Trip-Computer System control, and shift paddles.

The ambient interior lighting offers 253 Indoor Mood Lighting options and, when combined with the dual zone automatic climate control and the panoramic 1.2sq/m sunroof, ensured we experienced a relaxing and comfortable interior environment, whatever the time of day or night.

BEHIND THE WHEEL •

With ample leg, shoulder, and head room throughout the SUV, every occupant is assured supreme comfort. This is further enhanced by a rear seat air conditioning vent, along with rear door and back windshield dark privacy glass. A 12V backup power supply is also located in the rear. A generous luggage compartment adds to the practical nature of this premium SUV.

Infotainment & Technology

The infotainment system of the new HONGQI HS5 is clean and minimalistic in nature, and features a double 12.3-inch, highquality LCD screen, along with a driver information display, all of which are beautifully integrated into the car’s cockpit. We found this system to be intuitive and easy to navigate, providing us with a sense of complete control over the vehicle’s extensive range of functions. The Bose 12-speaker sound system is also included in the setup, amongst several other entertainment amenities. Further fancy features of our Deluxe model included an extensive head-up display, satellite navigation, wireless charging and an air purifier system.

Performance & Safety

Despite being highly impressed by all aspects of this luxury SUV’s exterior and interior designs, it was its on-road performance that really grabbed our attention. Housing a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo charged, direct injection engine, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, the new HONGQI HS5 has plenty of energy on offer. Delivering 224hp, along with 340Nm of torque, this 2023 model can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 8.7 seconds, and produces a top speed of 210km/h. Furthermore, the fourwheel drive system coupled with the five selectable driving modes, ensures the best possible performance in all terrains and conditions. A vast array of safety and driver assistance features have been fitted in the new model to ensure the wellbeing of all occupants. These include but are not limited to, ABS Braking Assist, Electronic Brake Distribution, an Electronic Stability Program, a Traction Control System, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, several cameras, ISOFIX points and airbags located throughout the vehicle.

Our Verdict

HONGQI are improving every year with their premium car offerings and, if they keep up their current trajectory, could soon establish themselves a global reputation of being amongst the very finest cars on the roads today. ✤

FILTERED PERFECTION

Staying hydrated is essential to our health, therefore making our daily water consumption choices important. How we go about this is up to us!

Having a cool pitcher of water always at hand is one way to go, but traditional pitchers can collect unwanted pollutants in filters where they can then quickly multiply, and reverse contaminate your water. This is where the LARQ Pitcher PureVis steps in and goes beyond basic filtration with a unique two-step filtration and purification process for pure-tasting water sip after sip.

The LARQ Pitcher PureVis eliminates a range of contaminants such as lead, mercury, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) / perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS), pharmaceuticals, VOCs and prevents the growth of other bio-contaminants. This superior filtration process is possible through their innovative plant-based filters that use ‘Nano Zero’ technology to effectively remove chemicals like chlorine and other particulates, while their proprietary PureVis (a short-wavelength ultraviolet light) technology prevents the growth of bio-contaminants and improves the taste of water.

The filters used on the LARQ Pitcher can last up to 50% longer

than other leading brands in this space and filter a total of 60 gallons of water before needing a replacement. Once you set up your pitcher, you can download the LARQ app which pairs your pitcher via Bluetooth. The app then tracks the status of your filter and the battery life of the PurVis wand, all this while also informing you about your consumption habits. ✤

APP-LICIOUS

What’s on the smartphone agenda for December?

NORAD Tracks Santa Minutiae

Stepping sideways and going down a different route in the age of social media dominance seems like an unorthodox idea.

But doing something along those lines is Minutiae, an app that refers to itself as the ‘anti-social’ social app, oh the sweet irony! But wait, here’s the thing; Minutiae really does challenge conventional design by restricting users to just one minute of usage per day and anonymises shares to encourage users to ‘embrace the boring and mundane’.

The app will randomly send subscribers an alarm to remind them to record whatever happens to be around them at that particular moment and they are encouraged to do so regardless of how ‘boring’ that might be.

Once the participants have taken their photos, they are then allotted just 60 seconds to browse their own chronological timeline or that of a random stranger they have been matched with.

Once the minute is up, the app shuts down and users must wait until the next random alarm to be able to use it again.

This Christmas Santa, Rudolph and the gang are most certainly coming to town and thanks to the NORAD Tracks Santa app, you and your kids can find out exactly when, no matter where in the world you might be.

NORAD Tracks Santa is an annual Christmasthemed programme in which the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) simulates the tracking of Santa Claus, who is said to leave the North Pole to travel around the world on his mission to deliver presents to children every year on Christmas Eve.

The programme starts on December 1, but the actual Santa-tracking simulation starts at midnight annually on December 23. It is a community outreach function of NORAD and has been held annually since 1955.

Today, NORAD has a dedicated mobile app and social media. More than 1,400 staffers run the hotline, which receives around 150,000 calls each year.

FROM HELLAS WITH LOVE

fact magazine 70
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN
Leonardo Garcia, Head Chef at Attic, speaks of his passion for the culinary arts and all things Greek.

My father was a great cook. This passion started when I was a kid, at home we always had big tables with friends and good food.

cuisine?

I’m from the beautiful Venezuela, where the Caribbean starts and the Amazon begins, famous for its natural resources and beautiful women.

The first time I visited Greece was in 2004 for a holiday to Mykonos. And that was it, I fell in love with the island, its way of living, its culture and the Greek people. So, I decided to move to live in Greece and for the next 16 years I travelled all over the country, learning more about its traditions and gastronomy.

Something that is very special about Greece is the quality their products – for example, just good tomatoes, olive oil and salt. Heaven! It just caught me.

My wife is Greek and now we have a two-month-old Greek baby born in Bahrain, so definitely Greece and Bahrain are part of my life!

What is your favourite thing to cook for yourself and your signature dish for the restaurant?

Bread, feta and olive oil. These are the things that we can never be without at home. Lately also dates. My wife loves dates.

My speciality for the restaurant is lamb shoulder roasted in the charcoal oven. Greek lamb, if you have ever had it, is unique in its quality and flavour. So, the challenge here in Bahrain, was to try to recreate that with the lamb we have available. To do that we use Australian lamb and slow cook it in the oven for around four-and-a-half to five hours, so that the meat and the fat become buttery, then it is finished in the charcoal oven so the fat is crispy and the meat is deliciously tender with the smoky flavour from the coals. It is something our guests love.

How do you spend your spare time here in Bahrain?

I try to visit the local restaurants. I like Bahraini food, especially Machboos. I also enjoy sailing and fishing and Bahrain has beautiful, small virgin islands to visit by boat.✤

AFTERNOON DELIGHT!

Lawson Misquitta took his taste buds for a flavourful weekend treat.

Some might say waking up on a Friday and heading out to brunch is one of the better ways to kick off a weekend on the island. So, I decided to do just that and made my way to the heart of Manama’s bustling financial district to Downtown Rotana’s Flavours on 2. Nestled on the second floor, Flavours on 2 is considered the culinary heart of the hotel as it offers all-day dining choices from an à la carte menu as well as breakfast and lunch buffets. But every Friday the restaurant whips itself into special shape to host one of the best brunches the city has to offer.

On arriving, I was warmly greeted and directed to my table. The dining area is bright with abundant natural light flooding in from the expanse of glass on one side. It allows you a direct view of the usually busy Manama Centre and King Faisal Highway, but the much-reduced traffic serves as a sweet reminder that ‘Thank God it’s Friday!’ and puts you at ease to unwind and make the most of your afternoon.

Then we got to the reason we were there. As I laid my eyes on the bountiful spread of dining choices along with the open kitchen and live cooking stations, I didn’t know where to begin! But moving past that delightful predicament, I grabbed a plate and made my way to the salad bar which was filled with possibilities galore and certainly the most colourful section of the spread. After loading my plate with some Asian-style beef salad and some lovely watermelon and feta salad, I next delved into the sauces and dip section and tried some of the exotic hummus preparations among a selection of other choices.

As I headed back to my table my plate still had some room to spare, then I spotted a vast selection of cheeses. I was glad to try a few!

Back at my table, the staff came to check our drinks preference, the options here too were plenty. Throughout our meal the

fact magazine 73

servers were exceedingly attentive and always helpful in every way and a fantastic two-piece band serenaded us with a vast selection of hits from across the years. .

Returning to the delectable spread, I decided to check out the section dedicated to meat lovers and it didn’t disappoint one bit. From among the myriad choices such as cold cuts, roast chicken and much more, I got myself a serving of the Beef Wellington. The tenderloin was perfectly cooked and wrapped in a layer of finely chopped mushroom and meat mixture, while this scrumptious bite was held together by a beautifully baked, flaky puff pastry, could I even ask for anything more? I did and the barbecue beef ribs a few steps away served as the perfect answer. Thoroughly covered with a delicious sauce that was equal parts both sweet and tangy, the meat almost immediately fell off the bone. Satisfying!

At the section dedicated to ocean fare aficionados, the selection was massive and included a chilled seafood bar amply stocked with shrimp, mussels, fresh oysters, crabs and squid. This further expanded into an exquisite sushi selection that had at least nine different varieties to choose from. The chef stylishly garnished and decorated each of them individually with the final plate forming a visual delight and the play on textures among the different types a joy to experience with every bite!

As I gladly continued eating, servers came to our table with more appetisers prepared fresh from the kitchen, including delicious hard shell veg tacos and prawn tempuras, which had a thin coating of batter making them light, crisp and very flavourful. A clear stand out for me though was the quiche which came with an enticingly savoury filling of egg, meat and selected herbs and spices peppered throughout. The egg here was fluffy, creamy and had the right amount of cheese giving it the perfect bite, while the meat and herbs blissfully danced in and out with every morsel. I asked for another serving of this one!

Perusing the mains, the choices included a variety of rice and gravy preparations such as paella, butter chicken and many more from various different cuisines as well as a selection of steak options. I looked over the cuts available and picked a hearty rib-eye which was prepared to my liking and accompanied with a buttery mushroom sauce and a side of lip-smacking potato gratin, that has made its way onto my list of favourite sides to accompany a steak meal. Finally, post all the eating and with only the slightest of room to spare but with no desire to hold back now, I made my way to the attractive dessert spread which included an assortment of sweets, cakes, ice-creams, cheesecakes, Arabic sweets and much more. From among these the White Chocolate Cake was heavenly to taste with it being subtly sweet but with a velvety and creamy texture all while feeling extremely light. Other stand outs were the Crème Brulée, Blueberry Mousse Cake and the Caramel Budino. As I left the restaurant, I remember feeling sufficiently content and knowing all too well that not far in the future I’d be on that lift again making my return to Flavours on 2. ✤

AMAZING FLAVOURS, RENEWED

Lawson Misquitta discovered some of the new offerings in store at Together & Co.

On a weekday afternoon, a colleague and I made our way to the Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay, adjoining The Avenues-Bahrain. We were alerted to the hiring of a new head chef at their casual bistro, Together & Co., and were excited to see what he would prepare for us to try.

As soon as we arrived, we were cordially received by the staff and guided to our table. Once seated it was hard not to be struck with the vast and spacious dining floor which showcased a minimalistic furnishing style, predominantly using wood. The restaurant also boasted one of the best views overlooking Manama’s skyline and Bahrain Bay.

Within a few minutes we were greeted by the new Italian Head Chef Enrico Morselli. He expressed his joy at joining the Hilton Garden Inn team and revealed his plans to revamp certain aspects of the menu. Noting that he wants to introduce more globally-inspired offerings that would include various Asian and Indian dishes, among many others, he added that he’ll also maintain a roster of well-loved items built around his culinary strengths.

We kicked off our meal with a plate of Shrimp and Avocado Salad, here the fresh shrimp was impeccably blanched giving it a firm but moist and tender bite. It was served along with mixed lettuce, cherry tomatoes, thinly-cut cucumber and avocado slices, and accompanied with the most exquisite olive oil and herb dressing. Although the components here were straight forward and simple, a bite combining all the elements together was truly greater than the sum of its parts. I first drizzled but then subsequently splashed every bite with more of the dressing in which the olive oil was certainly high quality, by itself it had a very rich and flavoursome profile and was further enhanced with the added blend of herbs, it absolutely contributed towards elevating each morsel.

The following appetiser was the Chicken Wings in Pineapple BBQ Sauce, a tried-and-true favourite. Having personally exhausted my affinity for most versions of the BBQ flavouring over the years due to the usual exaggerated monotone sweetness or unbalanced tanginess, I wasn’t too excited to dig into this. But I found myself pleasantly surprised at Chef Enrico’s take on this kitchen classic. The pineapple sauce that doused the wings was prepared in-house and had a bold, robust and deliciously savoury taste to it, which was thoroughly intensified with the sweet smoky tang of charred pineapple fresh off the grill. Consider me a believer again! And, of course, I must not forget the other element, the wings themselves were lightly battered giving the right amount of crispiness and the meat inside was soft and delicious. We were then served the first of our mains, an Asian Coconut Curry with prawns on a bed of steamed jasmine rice. Taking clear inspiration from Thailand, the curry used plenty of aromatics like ginger, garlic and lemongrass, which was a downright treat for the senses. The use of Thai chillies here stoked the heat profile and brought a subtle but clear spiciness, while the incorporation of coconut milk counteracted the spice and brought a welcome balance and creamy texture. So good, so tasty!

The second of our mains was a wonderful plate of Mushroom

Risotto, this simple and hearty dish was very well executed using parmesan cheese, truffle oil and a mixture of dried porcini and fresh mushrooms. The porcini mushrooms imbued a deep, nutty and earthy flavour to the preparation making it irresistible. This was followed with the highlight of our meal which was the Chicken Parmigiana, plated beautifully and delectable to the palate this dish had it all. The chicken breast was perfectly juicy, while the exterior had a crisp coating of fried breadcrumbs, which was then topped off with a rich tomato sauce and covered in melted mozzarella. Coupled with this was a serving of Spaghetti Pomodoro (a tomato-based pasta sauce made from fresh tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and fresh basil). Here again the same high-quality olive oil stood out and played its part superbly in heightening the charm of this wonderful dish. We rounded off the afternoon with a delicious dessert of Key Lime Pie that was finely plated with slices of lime cut decoratively and garnished with mixed berries. The cream filling managed to strike a good balance between being sweet and tart and the buttery crust served as the perfect vessel holding it all together.

All in all, Chef Enrico did surely impress and kept to his promise of not staying limited to a particular cuisine. We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes he prepared for us and I, for one, will surely be returning to try more, once the new menu starts taking shape. ✤

AN ARTISTIC ARENA

Melissa Nazareth dined at Gallery 21, an aesthetic paradise tucked away in Bahrain’s artistic district and popular restaurant hub Block 338.

Gallery 21 has four concepts: Gallery 21 Restaurant, Genwa Moroccan Lounge and Restaurant, Art Gallery, and Mai Tai Lounge by Trader Vic’s. My colleague and I went there for lunch. We sat at Gallery 21 Restaurant, a sprawling Mediterranean garden, with live walls, ridged columns, French windows and garden statues. The palm trees added an Arabian touch, gently reminding us that we were still in Bahrain. We learned that the ‘convertible roof’, which is a glass roof through which the light streams in, is a recent development. It can be opened in cooler weather. There are two rooftop areas as well, including the Mai Tai rooftop. The whole venue has an artistic aesthetic, from the striking exhibits at the Art Gallery to the interior decor detail such as the lit, wooden wall fitting in the lobby; designed as what appeared to be the keys of a piano. The showstopper was a vintage convertible car, black and shiny with crimson upholstery and metallic accents – truly a work of art!

Our lunch started with the Arugula Salad, an interesting combination of peppery local jarjeer or arugula with salty feta and parmesan shavings, refreshing cucumber, sweet and tart dried cranberries, sharp and tangy pickled onions and toasty pine nuts. They say, the soul of any salad lies in the dressing and this was tossed in a zingy-sweet jarjeer pesto and honey balsamic dressing – soulful indeed!

Next, came the Gallery Combo Bits, a great platter to share. It featured unique creations: Cigar Smoke Ribs, a thinly rolled, crispy filo pastry stuffed with tender, flavourful pulled beef; Jalapeno Chicken Popper, which had a bit of a kick to it and was

my favourite from the lot; sweet potato and tuna balls, which my colleague particularly enjoyed; a deep-fried, Doritos-crusted feta brick, which gave this simple cheese a modern, fun touch; and rice blocks, fried and topped with crab, which tasted quite a bit like sushi. The thin-crust Tandoori Chicken Tikka pizza followed. It was cheesy but light and the chicken was succulent and mildly spiced. After this, we were presented with Seafood Royal, which featured lobster tail, jumbo prawns, seabass, salmon and baby squid, all grilled. I particularly enjoyed the seabass, which was oh so fresh and cooked to perfection. These treasures of the sea were accompanied by wilted spinach, creamy mashed potato and a lemon butter sauce. However, the seabass, moist and flaky, didn’t need any accompaniments. The long slices of fried plantain used as a decorative element were crispy and moreish. We then moved on to mains, the first of which was Fish Sayadieh. We were told it’s a very traditional Lebanese dish, evident from the burst of flavours in the first spoonful. In true Gallery 21 style, it was presented in a modern way – the rice as a cake in the centre, fenced by cubes of salmon, garnished with crispy, caramelised onions; traditionally, the rice is plated first and topped with the fish. Gallery 21 doesn’t play with the authenticity of the flavours but presents traditional creations in a contemporary style, making it appealing to a wider audience. There’s a plate for every palate here! We loved the smokey, sweet flavours from the onions, which added texture too, as did the nutty cashews tossed in the rice. The seabass, needless to say, was fresh and complemented the lightly spiced rice.

Our second main course was the Sous Vide Baby Grilled Chicken. Sous vide is a cooking technique that immerses vacuum-sealed

protein into warm water to slowly cook meat or fish to a very consistent level of ‘doneness’. It’s no surprise that our chicken was perfectly cooked, juicy and tender with white insides. Our server informed us that it was marinated in chicken bone broth among other elements. The sauce, savoury and thick, was flavoured with spices such as paprika and herbs such as rosemary. Complementing and balancing this powerhouse of flavours were egg fried rice and grilled veggies. The former was presented in a fried tortilla shell and garnished with crispy-fried okra spears – don’t skip these!

Our last dish was BBQ Glazed Beef Short Ribs. Sat on a bed of minty pureed peas was a rack of melt-off-the-bone short ribs. The skin was crispy and the meat melted in my mouth. The BBQ sauce lent a shine to the ribs, spotlighting the hero of this dish, as well as a moreish sweetness, which was balanced by the tangy dehydrated cherry tomatoes. On the side, there was a baked potato, topped with sour cream and melted cheese, the perfect carby co-star to this hearty protein. Our luncheon adventure extended beyond sunset and, as the day turned into night, the restaurant transformed into a completely different space, with purplish-hued lighting and golden chandeliers.

As well as a wide selection of classic dishes and a pretty Afternoon Tea offering, Gallery 21 also has an extensive take-away menu. Further, they host gatherings of various scales, brunches and business lunches. ✤

MORE THAN A NIGHTLIFE DESTINATION

Melissa Nazareth enjoyed a delightful dining experience, tucking into rustic Irish staples and pub classics at JJ’s Irish Restaurant.

JJ’s recently relocated into Block 338 and they’re bigger and, might we say, better. While they continue to be the haunt for sundown socialisers, they’re now also focusing more on the food and dining experiences.

Spread across two floors, there is a separate sports lounge, game room to shoot some pool and, of course, the bar and entertainment area where you have the live band playing and karaoke nights. Each of the spaces has a distinct décor and feel. Additionally, they will soon have an outdoor space ready, in time for winter. It’s worth mentioning that there are screens throughout the restaurant, so you can catch your favourite team playing no matter where you sit. Let’s take a minute to talk about the well-thought-out decor. While many of the items have been newly sourced, some of the displays are from the old restaurant, such as paintings and sports jerseys in the sports lounge. There’s been some upcycling too; the barrels from the previous JJ’s have been converted into tables. The venue has an Irish personality, with wood detail, green wallpaper and stained-glass windows. There are other catchy installations such as framed vintage ads, modern prints by Irish artists, a huge antique wall clock…

The food is a combination of traditional Irish dishes and JJ’s creations, as well as pub grub. Though we went for lunch, we simply had to try the Irish Breakfast platter, featuring eggs, sausages, bacon, black and white pudding, hashbrowns, mushrooms and a whole grilled tomato, as well as a side of beans. I was excited for the puddings as this was my first time trying them. The black variety, surprisingly, didn’t have a metallic

taste as I expected. It was meaty, minty and fragrant. The white one was savoury and mealy. My favourite, however, were the sausages, springy and salty, with a crispy casing.

Next, we tried the potato and leek soup. It’s one of the most traditional dishes you will ever eat and tasted like a warm hug. The potatoes lent it a viscosity and the leeks, a mild oniony flavour. I absolutely loved the crispy potato slivers used as garnish. It was served with JJ’s soda bread, freshly baked in-house. The bread was airy and light with a sturdy crust, perfect to dunk into the soup or even tasty enough to enjoy by itself.

After that, the smoked salmon salad arrived, which was refreshing. A canvas of coral salmon, red cherry tomatoes and different hues of green. There was a crunch from the lettuce and the avocado cubes and black olives added further texture. The umami flavours from the salmon stood out and were complemented by a strawberry vinaigrette dressing, which didn’t overpower the ingredients and had a subtle aftertaste.

You must try the Reuben sandwich, a new item on the menu which is currently being revamped. It’s made with JJ’s corned beef, a delicious cut that’s brined for 10 days and then slow cooked. Enveloped by two slices of toasted soda bread packed with tangy pickles, it was tender and juicy, served with a side salad and pungent horseradish sauce, which elevated the meaty flavours. We switched to some pub grub, starting with a pair of moreish beef sliders, which were juicy and the ideal portion size for one. They were followed by the classic cod and chips. The hot, crispy batter against the moist, soft cod fillet offered contrasting textures that tantalised. Served with soft, thick cut fries, piquant

tartar sauce and creamy and sweet mushy peas, this is a dish for which JJ’s is rightly famed.

The mustard baked chicken was another homely dish served with a side of mash and gravy. Immaculately plated, the chicken was well-cooked, juicy and lightly flavoured. We also tried the beef and ale pie, which looked as rustic as it tasted. The buttery puff pastry on top was flaky but when doused with the robust beefy stew it concealed, it melted in my mouth.

The lamb stew was light, with a bite from the barley, a common ingredient in Irish cooking. JJ’s freshly prepares its stocks inhouse – the secret behind their flavourful stews. The vegetable cobbler was a tomato-based gravy with vegetables, topped with the cobbler that is made using milk, flour and cheese. Almost like a Southern style American biscuit, the cobbler was airy and spongy, soaking in the rich flavours of the gravy.

About this time, we had just enough room left for dessert, a marbled chocolate mousse cake. It had a richness from the chocolate mousse, balanced by the cream, and just the right amount of sweetness. The berries on top made it look pretty while also cutting through the decadent chocolatiness.

Full to the brim, I can safely say that whether you’re a sports buff, a karaoke and music junkie or simply looking for a lovely dining experience, JJ’s offers it all. ✤

The crème de la crème of the Kingdom’s food and beverage (F&B) and hospitality sectors turned out as we gathered to celebrate the Fact Dining Awards Bahrain 2023. Now in its 13th edition, this year’s gala ceremony was held at the beautiful, brand-new Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa. A great deal of hard work and planning went into the event and with the support of our generous partners: The Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa, Porsche Centre Bahrain, Ahlan App, BMMI, Bidfood, Anorris Events, HSP Marketing, Floward, Terapy, Asgharali, Bath & Body Works and Vatel Bahrain – International Hospitality School we handed over a host of awards to our excited and deserving winners, who represent the best of the best from across the island’s vibrant and eclectic dining dining scene. Each year, two winners are chosen in each category – the Favourites, which are selected by a public on-line vote, and the Best, chosen by industry experts.

This year’s awards saw 531 nominations across 49 categories ranging from family-friendly and brunch to speciality offerings, regional cuisines and newcomers. And, on top of all these, came the awards for Overall Favourite Restaurant, which was won by Salero at The Westin City Centre Bahrain, and Overall Best Restaurant, which was won by CUT by Wolfgang Puck at Four

Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. A massive 68,700 people cast the individual votes, up significantly from last year’s 61,000, giving an indication of how involved our readers really are with the restaurants, cafés, bars and lounges that play such a large part in Bahrain’s lively social scene.

FACT Magazines publisher, Rami Khlil, said: “It was an honour to host so many of our long-term partners and friends alongside the cream of society for the kind of awards party FACT is so well known for. The number of votes cast is growing every year and we believe our island’s unique dining and hospitality scene is truly deserving of celebration.

“We at FACT are always incredibly grateful for the support of all our partners, members of the dining sector and, of course, our readers and voters – without them the awards could not happen – and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in any way.” ✤

SPLENDID SOUTH AFRICA

Culturally diverse and offering a wide range of experiences, South Africa, also known as the Rainbow Nation, is a great winter destination.

• TRAVEL
Cape Town

Having a rich history and multicultural environment, the Republic of South Africa has so much to offer the discerning traveller, from museums and vibrant neighbourhoods to bustling streets and markets. Further, it’s

biodiversity is truly worth exploring on a safari. December marks the start of summer in the Southern Hemisphere, ushering in toasty, pleasant climes – the ideal winter escape. We explore three well-known cities, offering a mix of touristy and off-beat activities and attractions.

CAPE TOWN

South Africa’s fight against apartheid is intricately woven into its rich history. Visit Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is located about four hours from Cape Town. It’s where Nelson Mandela, the country’s most iconic and inspirational leader, spent many of his prison days. You can easily get a ferry from Nelson Mandela Gateway at Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. While you’re there, tour the prison and visit the island’s museum. You can also enjoy stunning views of Table Mountain and the surrounding ocean from here.

Table Mountain is a major tourist landmark and natural haven, with thousands of plant species. Enjoy breathtaking views of Cape Town while riding a cable car. There are many hiking routes here as well. Make a pit stop at the popular Table Mountain Café before heading to the Cape of Good Hope, which lies within the Table Mountain National Park. It’s known for Boulder Penguin Beach, where you can see the birds flocking together. Cape Point is popular for its beaches. Nestled at the base of Table Mountain is Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a must-visit for nature lovers. Home to a variety of plants, it’s also a haven for birds. You can spend at least half a day here, leisurely strolling, taking in the mesmerising views from the Tree Canopy Walkway or bridge, stopping by the Tea Room to unwind for a bit… the gardens also host art exhibitions and other events. Walk the cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap, said to be the oldest surviving residential area of Cape Town, which used to be a slave colony. Today, however, is a vibrant cityscape with brightly coloured houses, which are said to be an expression of freedom.

Located just 3km away from Bo-Kaap is the V&A Waterfront. It offers an urban, touristy experience, replete with shopping, dining and more. However, it’s also a good place to get a taste of the local culture. While attractions such as the Two Oceans Aquarium are more commercial, there are off-beat activities to enjoy such as shopping at Greenmarket Square. It’s dotted with stalls selling souvenirs and crafts – don’t forget to haggle!

JOHANNESBURG

You can’t leave South Africa without experiencing a Big Five safari. Big Five refers to the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo, large mammals that were difficult to stalk and hence, considered a feat by trophy hunters.

Thankfully, these days, we’re more about just seeing rather than killing them and Pilanesberg National Park, which is about three hours from Johannesburg, offers one-day right up to five-day safaris. It’s surreal to watch the animals in their natural habitat and if you’re lucky, you may spot one or more of the Big Five! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure where you can cut off from the hustle bustle and connect with the scenic wonder that is South Africa. If you plan to stay overnight, you can use the lodge facilities at the park. Spend a day walking around Joburg inner city, admiring the street art, visiting the art galleries and unwinding at the many cafes. Striking murals by both international and local artists adorn buildings, creating a vibrant atmosphere around metropolitan areas such as the Maboneng precinct, Jeppestown and Newtown. Johannesburg Art Gallery, the largest on the continent, houses international and local exhibits, including art from as far back as the 17th century. Apartheid Museum, the first-of-its-kind, is home to carefully curated film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts. They illustrate the horrific stories from this unfortunate period in history. In addition to the main exhibition, there are temporary displays, as well as one dedicated to Nelson Mandela, a central figure in the fight against apartheid. A tour of Mandela House or Nelson Mandela National Museum will offer insights into the life of this revered South African leader. Managed by the Apartheid Museum on behalf of Soweto Heritage Trust, it’s a single-story, redbrick building, a testament to Mandela’s humble life during the struggle. A 20-minute tour will take you around the home’s original furnishings, memorabilia and photographs.

You can buy souvenirs such as books, CDs and other items from the shop here. Those with a penchant for archeology must visit Maropeng Visitors Centre and the Sterkfontein Cave, located an hour from Johannesburg. The former is an exhibition that takes you on an interesting journey about human evolution. The caves contain fossils, including those of Mrs. Ples – our biped ancestor – and Little Foot – an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton dating back more than three million years.

DURBAN

Durban is home to numerous coastal areas where you can swim and enjoy a range of water activities. Golden Mile, a beachfront promenade, is a major attraction. In addition to a long stretch of beaches, you also have many high-rise hotels, restaurants and shopping centres here. New Pier Beach is a popular spot for surfers. A shortish drive from Durban will take you to Umhlanga Rocks, which is also dotted with beautiful beaches. You have plenty of things to do here, including surfing, scuba diving and kiteboarding. There are many restaurants, premium bed-and-breakfast venues and hotels too.

Get your retail therapy at the Indian Quarter – Durban has a thriving South Asian community. You will find the

best bargains at Victoria Street Market including spices, incense and trinkets. Florida Road is another must-visit, especially after sunset. Lined with numerous cafes, eateries, boutiques and art galleries, the street comes alive at night. You can also spot preserved Edwardian structures that are more than 100 years old. Don’t forget to try Bunny Chow, a simple yet flavour-packed local dish with Indian influences. It’s basically curry in a bowl, only the bowl is a loaf of bread that’s been hollowed out.

Extend your tryst with nature at Durban Botanic Gardens. Said to be the oldest surviving botanical garden in Africa, it is home to numerous indigenous plant species, some of which are more than 100 years old. Don’t miss the Trail of Lights event, a charitable happening with food, shopping and festive lights, which will run through to January 2, In addition to flora, you can also find many bird species residing here.

Umgeni River Bird Park is another attraction. The park is spread across eight acres of lush tropical landscaping, with several natural waterfalls. You will find more than 800 birds from as many as 200 species here. The park works toward conserving many endangered species; there’s a nursery where you can see how birds are hatched and raised. There are aviaries and open exhibits too, as well as a free-flight bird show that you must not miss. ✤

HOLIDAY MAGIC MEETS ‘70S DISCO

Brasserie Hennes, the H&M café concept, introduced earlier in the year to take fashionistas on a peoplewatching journey to the streets of Paris, has been reimagined for the festive season with a distinctly party vibe.

Transformed into a disco-inspired snowscape for the holidays – it's cosy, inviting and buzzing with festive excitement with actress Chloë Sevigny and musician Anderson Paak shining like stars wearing the sparkling new collection. For girls, key pieces include a soft pink suit, a pink, longsleeved, sparkle dress, a black fringe dress with elements of sequins and a high-necked, silver sequined dress. While the guys’ collection has a distinctly ‘70s feel with animal print shirts, a resurgence of the decade’s ubiquitous brown colour and a classic tux jacket. Described as ‘a banquet of style, encouraging confidence with its irresistible colours and textures’, the selection sure lives up to the hype and has a definite party-ready focus. Statement accessories such as dazzling rhinestone sunnies, bold pink rhinestone earrings and a diamanté draping bra, all crave the spotlight. Shimmering platform heels, over-the-knee black heeled boots and candy pink pumps are ideal for the dance floor.

Speaking about the shoot, Anderson Paak said: “I had a great time working with H&M and the amazing cast in the magical world within Brasserie Hennes. It’s all about living in the moment and truly celebrating life with those around you, especially around this time of year. It really got me in the holiday spirit.” ✤ GO: VISIT QA.HM.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE, POP

The Loneliest Time

Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Former Canadian Idol second runner-up, she shot to fame with her hit single Call Me Maybe in 2012. She has released six studio albums including T he Loneliest Time. The LP opens with Surrender My Heart , which gives ‘70s disco vibes, with up-tempo music, drums and synthesisers, in keeping with Jepsen’s pop influences and musical style. But there are also some very thoughtful lyrics. “So, I've been tryin' hard to open up. When I lost someone, it hit me rough I paid to toughen up in therapy. She said to me, “Soften Up””. The lyrics, seemingly inspired by experience, are easy to relate to, not unlike other songs by Jepsen, who’s known for her catchy lyrics.

Lead single Western Wind has a soulful melody and is a reminiscent love song asking, “Do you remember a conversation With our heads against the pillow?” It’s different from the opening song, a trend that continues throughout the LP; each song has a distinct personality, a major case in point being Beach House , a bouncy number but with resentful undertones. “Boys around the world I want to believe that when you chase a girl It's not just hunting season.” Love and unrequited love seem to be major themes throughout; bittersweet longing, heartbreak, cynicism, the excitement of falling in love again… This love anthem will take you through all of it and more.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

Inner World Peace

Greta Kline is an American musician, singer and songwriter. Formerly known as Frankie Cosmos, which is now the name of her band, she released Inner World Peace via Sub Pop. There are 15 songs on the LP, which features strings, drums and the piano. The music is easy going, the ideal backdrop for a long drive to nowhere.

The album opens with Abigail and right away you know this is going to be one of those personal account kinds of albums. Heavy with emotion, it leaves room for interpretation. “If I die right now, I need you to see Abigail, I want you to be alive with me” points to loss and subsequent loneliness.

You begin to understand the reasoning behind the catchy album title – Inner World Peace. Aftershock comes next, offering the same pace and melody only to reveal a plot twist midway; the song’s sound changes, a creative touch by Kline, which makes you want to know what more is in store. Fruit Stand continues with the loss or left-lonely-behind theme, which seems to be a major inspiration. Magnetic Personality ups the tempo of the album, which eventually closes with Heed The Call , again a slow number. This one will make a place in the hearts of Indie music lovers.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Magic Moments Expensive Footwear Presents Or Presence

As with every major sporting event, the FIFA World Cup has not been without its controversies but there have been some truly heartwarming moments and stories too. The Japanese fans cleaning up the stadiums after their matches prompting others to follow suit. The absolute joy of the Japanese at their unlikely win over Germany. But, for us, and we suspect for many around the world, the one stand-out moment of the tournament so far has to be Saudi Arabia beating the giants of Argentina. The sheer jubilation (and, almost, disbelief) of the players, the absolute ecstasy of the fans and the team’s adoption by pretty much the whole of the Middle East has been amazing to see. And then there was that half-time speech with coach Hervé Renard, loudly exhorting his team to play the football of their lives (and the equally animated delivery from the translator). As we go to press, we don’t know if Saudi will go any further in the competition but we’re sure we’re not the only ones wishing them the very best of luck!

When we think of highly priced shoes, the mind generally runs to those red-soled confections from Christian Louboutin or the Manolos much loved by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City . To be honest, we’d be thinking of pretty much anything other than a tatty pair of 50-yearold Birkenstocks. Wouldn’t you? So, it came as a bit of a shock that just such a pair of ‘well-used brown suede

A million-dollar-earning UK mum, who also happens to be a newsworthy CEO of a large supermarket chain, has said she’ll only be buying one present each for her twin six-year-old daughters this year. Shirine Khoury-Haq told The Guardian that she couldn’t ‘in good conscience’ give them more while millions of families are struggling. Meanwhile mum-of-four Courtney Tillia, from Los Angeles, will be splashing out after quitting her teaching job and joining OnlyFans to make ends meet. And Sarah

Birkenstocks’ had sold for a record of nearly USD220,000 at a recent sale by Julien’s Auctions in the USA. OK, so the Birks in question belonged to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and, dating from the 1970s, he was quite possibly wearing them as he paced the floor during the creation and early days of the computer giant. But, really, USD220,000 for a pair or worn sandals, that’s bonkers. Though it might convince the boss to lift the office Birks ban.

Moore, from the UK, got some online flack after sharing a TikTok video of the huge pile of toys she’s bought for 18-month-old daughter, Alya – though the trolls did take a bit of a back seat when Sarah explained that she has congenital heart disease and doesn’t know how many Christmases she will get to spend with the tot. So, what is it about the festive season that makes some of us go a bit shopping crazy? And do our kids really need mountains of gifts? In truth, wouldn’t they really rather have our time?

ISLAND INSIDER

Waleed Ali

Operational Partner and Co-Founder, Foodify

How did your interest in the hospitality sector start?

I’ve always had an interest in food and beverage and marketing and I’m about to graduate from Vatel Bahrain – International Hospitality School. I would say that, for me, it’s about connecting people with what they want, in terms of service or product; creating the bridge between people, products and services in new and innovative ways.

What can we expect from you?

Me and my business partner, Salman Bukhowa, are opening Foodify, which is an incubator and café in Saar Mall. It’s an SME

incubator where local business can put their foods on the shelves and we sell and promote them. I am operational partner and co-founder.

Salman and I have been friends for years. The two of us were sitting talking about it. Thinking about how much we love food and questioning why there is nothing new in the market, everything is all the same. So, we’re giving people the chance to show what they can do.

Dhiyafa Management Consultancy is also part of Foodify, we are helping rebrand two brands from a cloud kitchen. We are confident that when the market sees what we’re doing we will get further interest.

As a dedicated foodie, which three places would you recommend people to try in Bahrain?

That’s tough, but one of them would have to be re/ Asian because I love Asian food and I used to work there, so I got to try a lot of it. Banu, the Iranian place is fabulous. And L’ORTO is also really good. I do cook myself so, one of these days, I would love to have an Adliya rooftop lounge – watch this space! Maybe my journey towards that began when I started training at CUT by Wolfgang Puck. I was learning from the best, so I would still like the opportunity to put that into practice one day.
