A DIFFERENT KIND OF VIBE New to the scene, we were at The Bo$$man for a special Thursday evening, that really set the vibe for the month.

T

he latest venue to join the collection of establishments at the Flagship, Seef District, The much-anticipated Bo$$man has finally been revealed after a long wait, and we were beyond excited to visit. Bringing a hip, cool, funky vibe to eating out in the area, the restaurant has been designed and decorated in one of the edgiest feels ever – catchy puns all around, cool graphic designs on the walls, fluorescent lights and even a menu filled with creative names for the dishes. An experience of its own from start to end. Making a statement that they have no other choice but to ‘Boss It Up’ amongst neighbouring establishments in the area, the menu currently specialises in international-style appetisers, sliders, burgers and mini tacos, all with their very own unique twist. The Bo$$man has been able to give all these well-known dishes a little touch of their own magic, turning them into tastes that are deliciously over the top. Aside from the colourful mojitos, the friendly staff and the tunes of all the latest top Billboard tracks blasting, we loved the vibes at the soft opening, which you can replicate whether with a group of friends or even family members, and we thoroughly enjoyed munching through the night even more! For starters, we found ourselves fiercely diving into a colourful looking plate of Mexican Nachos. Laid on a bed of fresh tortilla chips, Angus minced beef, a whole lot of cheese, mixed capsicums and, of course, some fiery Mexican salsa, this appetiser played with our emotions – in a good type of way – as we crunched through the entire plate in a matter of minutes. Serving up a whole different palate teaser from our cheesy crusade, ‘The Squilla’ panko-breaded shrimps gave our taste buds a surprisingly delightful explosion. A well-balanced selection that satisfied us thoroughly and had us anticipating more. 10

fact magazine

We were particularly intrigued by the collection of sliders and decided to explore some as our main course for the evening. We can proudly say we were amongst the first on the island to get a taste of two very specialised Angus beef sliders; the Truffled Pistol and the AK47. Targets were shot for sure! Both the sliders were prepared with well-cooked Angus beef, served in buttery brioche buns, with American cheese and a special sauce for both of the different sliders. They truly hit the spot and were large enough that we were able to slice them into halves and share them amongst the table. It's an experience worth stopping by Seef for, check out @ thebossman.bh on Instagram to see for yourself. ✤

HEALTHY COMFORT FOOD Check out the café that promotes a better way of eating. If you’re a lover of seriously great coffee, you’ll be delighted that we discovered Higher Grounds in Tubli, a speciality café with a variety of coffee offerings roasted by Specialty Batch. And it’s not just about the coffee, Higher Grounds also serves all-day brunch and dinner ranging from egg platters and French toast to burgers and ramen. Sounds kind of sinful, right? But fear not, they take a natural and ethical approach using natural ingredients, local or organic where possible, and they offer plenty of veggie, vegan and gluten-free options. The aim is to be as sustainable as possible by offering complimentary filtered water, using mostly compostable packaging and sourcing responsibly. Higher Grounds also hosts community events on a regular basis. The attention is on quality with a desire for everything to be simple but very well done and this ethos comes from the family’s own upbringing in wishing to take a conscientious 12

approach and minimise impact on the environment. Best sellers include indulgent items such as the Espresso Cream French Toast and Hippie Pancakes, but you should also try the Mary Had a Vegan Lamb Burger and Hot Cauli Tacos. Plus, there’re some new items on the menu including salads and breakfast buns. The Platform is where, a few times a year, they organise a local chef to come in and incorporate a local ingredient to create a five-course set menu. This time, on December 10, it’s the turn of Bahraini Chef Naseem Rasrummani, who will be using locally-grown tomatoes to produce a one-day feast. ✤

ALL THAT JAZZ The BNP Paribas Bahrain Jazz Fest 2021 is back, in person, and with a new venue. The event, produced by Clockwork, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year and is the first in-person, Covid compliant festival since 2019. It will be hosted at Solymar Beach – making it the Kingdom’s very first beach jazz festival. Five bands from Bahrain and an international headliner, in the form of the all-star Jazz House Collective from the USA, will be performing seven hours of non-stop Jazz at Solymar Beach on December 3, from 3.30pm onwards. The local performing bands include The Relocators, Jack Rabbit Slims, Hotboxgroove, Jazz X Machina and a very special ‘Tribute to the Divas’ by Banah. The event will be headlined by American all-star jazz group, the Jazz House Collective, performing for the very first time in Bahrain. All of this coupled with Solymar’s signature food, beverages, and ambience, will provide a fresh flavour to the 2021 festival. THE PERFORMERS Jazz House Collective The Jazz House Collective from New York is an ensemble of award-winning jazz stars from the renowned American institution Jazz House Kids, USA. Led by prolific vocalist Melissa Walker, this is the headliner performance for this year’s festival. Banah Banah, one of the most promising female vocalists from Bahrain, will present a special show, ‘A Tribute to the Divas’, paying homage to some of the iconic women of jazz. Sharing 14

the stage with her will be some of the island’s top jazz musicians such as Khalid Alshamlan, Ahmed AQ AlQasim, Mohammed Rashid and Mohammed Salem. HotBoxGroove Bahrain's latest funk-fusion sensation, HotBoxGroove features some stellar musicians. Having performed at the 2020 Bahrain Jazz Fest’s live-streamed event, the eight-piece band will showcase their brand of fun and blues music in addition to playing their original score. The Relocators Edgy guitar driven tempos, infectious energy, sing-along melodies and a whole lot of bluesy rock fun, will all be packaged into one show by Bahrain’s homegrown band - The Relocators. The popular trio has earlier featured at the 2018 and 2019 festival editions. Jack Rabbit Slims Dynamic funk-infused rhythms and refined neo-funk driven grooves will be presented by Bahrain's very own Jack Rabbit Slims, a regular feature at Bahrain Jazz Fest. Their set this year will unveil some original releases in addition to their signature groovy funk rhythms. Jazz x Machina Jazz X Machina is a homegrown Bahrain Jazz Fest cross-

over project like nothing seen before in Bahrain. Featuring acclaimed Bahraini electronic producer Ahmed Zainal, vocalist Tiny, trumpeter Szabi Nigo, saxophonist Scott Rogal and guitarist Iba Mohsen, their performance will be interpretations of Jazz and Blues blended on an electronic musical landscape in a fusion of aural splendor. OUTREACH The BNP Paribas Bahrain Jazz Fest has also traditionally played a pivotal role in nurturing and cultivating young musicians from within the community and providing them with opportunities to engage with the international music fraternity. This year the festival will be conducting two youth engagement programmes with the American School of Bahrain and St Christopher’s School respectively. On December 1, multiple interactive workshops for the students at the American School of Bahrain will be conducted by the musicians of Jazz House Collective. Following which, on December 2, an inspirational talk for the students at the St Christopher’s Senior School has been organised, which will also be conducted by Jazz House Collective. This year’s festival will also feature an art auction of artist Hussain Al Noaimi’s ‘Sound of Colour’ art series. This collection captures those raw emotions, which a musical legend experiences while entranced in his passion. Hussain has chosen the time-honored medium of reclaimed wood, that is washed up on the shores of various beaches around Bahrain, instead of regular canvas, as his preferred medium for this collection. The natural grains of the wood represent the history of the legends depicted. Hussain is a self-taught Bahraini artist who has collaborated with the Bahrain Art Gallery and is a member of the Contemporary Art Society. The official closing event for the Bahrain Jazz Fest 2021 will be held at the Viola in Adliya’s Block 338. This is an open event which is not ticketed, and guests will be accommodated on table reservations only. Entry to the festival is for 18s and above and a limited number of tickets are still available at https://bit.ly/BJF2021tickets ✤

Paddle Play Gentlemen’s Hardware, Paddle Bat Set with Drawstring Bag www.namshi.com Paddle tennis is on the rise across the region. Fancy and Festive 73 London, Leaf Embroidered Velvet Shirt www.matchesfashion.com Nothing screams holiday season better than velvet. There’s just something about the fabric that makes it so festive — perhaps the warmth or softness. The fabric is super popular as it oozes class and timelessness. The faded grandeur of historic regal homes inspires the ornate gold leaf embroidery on this velvet shirt by 73 London along with the button placket. This is luxe and essential this season.

Year-Round Gift Yves Saint Laurent sephora.bh It doesn’t get more iconic than Y Le Parfum in the world of fragrances and building on its legacy is the recently revamped version of the much-loved signature scent. There’s a universal appeal to it that wears well all year round. What’s not to love?

Feel-Good Giving Sponsor A Child Savethechildren.org Want to give a gift with meaning? Then give the gift of giving back. There are numerous options to sponsor everything from a kennel or specific animal at your local rescue centre (we love this idea), to endangered animals across the world and even community animals in developing nations. Or, if you’re shopping for a family that has kids (or not), why not choose to sponsor a child through Save The Children. It’s a great way to learn more about giving back both locally and internationally.

Board Not Bored Cards Against Humanity Cardsagainsthumanity.com OK, we looked at lots of new games for this one but, to be honest, we couldn’t find anything to beat Cards Against Humanity – which describes itself as ‘a party game for horrible people’. Having played it (possibly more than once) we can attest that this is true and would highly recommend it. It used to be adults only but there’s now a Family Edition which makes us quite scared but sounds like great fun.

Budding Chefs AMT Cookware www.yyfakhro.com The family who cooks together will love these top-of-the-range pans by AMT, said by numerous chefs and professional culinary associations to be the best in the world. Equine Edibles Mini Stud Muffins Advent Calendar amazon.co.uk Make sure your horse, pony or donkey friend doesn’t miss out on the festive fun with a yummy Advent Calendar containing delicious handmade treats made from a host of tasty ingredients including oats, barley, wheat, molasses, linseed and fenugreek. They’re handmade with care and devotion and fortified with extra protein and flax seeds ensuring they are healthy and enjoyable for your equine friend.

Happy Hoppers BWOGUE Bunny Tunnels Amazon.com Rabbits, and lots of other small pets, love to dig. It’s what they would do in the wild and is part of their instinctive behaviour. So, as well as making sure they’ve always got a space to hide-out in their hutch, why not treat them to their very own Bunny Tunnel. You could even try scattering some rabbit-friendly treats inside to get them started. You’ll certainly have a happy, cuddly little friend when they’ve worn off some of that festive energy.

Cool Canines Puppy Scoops Maple Bacon Ice Cream For Dogs Puppycake.com Dogs and ice cream go together like, well, eggs and bacon. And speaking of bacon, this is the perfect gift for your favourite pupper – or even a dog-loving chum who wants to spoil their pooch. Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you order ice cream off the Internet. It comes in readymix powder form, all you have to do is add water, freeze and watch the delight on your pet pal’s face when they get a scoop of their very own chilly treat. And, all the better, it’s maple bacon flavoured!

Pet Parents Pet Portraits Etsy.com OK, not exactly one for the family pet (though we’re sure they’ll be immensely proud to see themselves immortalised in print). Rather a little something for the proud dog or cat mum or dad who has a sense of humour. All you need is a decent picture of said pooch or puss, send it in and the clever artists will do the rest.

F

ounded in the 1920s, MG is a British-born manufacturer famous in the mid-20th century for constructing sports cars. Over the last 90 years, MG has produced a wide variety of vehicles, including its first SUV in 2015. MG has gone on to produce its first fully electric vehicle, namely the new ZS EV. Having test-driven scores of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles over the years, we now relish the relatively new experience of driving battery-operated SUVs. Thanks to the professional team at Zayani Motors, we got to do just this by spending the day in the new family-friendly ZS EV. As the vehicle came into view we were immediately taken by its bold lines, sporty detailing and overall creative design. At the front end, the electric charging point of the car sits discreetly behind the large grille and MG badge. Headlights featuring a multi-faceted ‘shard’ structure refract light in different colours and shapes from the side. The lines of the curved bonnet and sloped windscreen connect effortlessly with the broad roofline complete with useful roof bars and panoramic sunroof. At the flanks, streamlined surfaces and ‘torenmolen’ 17-inch dual colour alloy rims hint at the vehicle’s on-road intentions, whilst at the rear, the wideopening boot ensures both loading and unloading is a simple chore. Available in five striking colours, we found the ZS EV to be a beautifully designed and eye-catching SUV. Shifting our attention to the interior, we were instantly impressed by the uncluttered nature of the dashboard as well as how easy it was to access all the perfectly placed controls and dials. For the driver’s convenience, the multifunction steering wheel also features controls for the multimedia system along with other functions. The infotainment system is accessed through an eight-inch touchscreen and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing for seamless connectivity with your own technology. No matter where we looked, premium materials, finishes and trimmings have been used throughout this SUV. We found the multi-adjustable sports seats to be well positioned, supportive and exceptionally comfortable. The back row can comfortably seat three occupants with ample head, shoulder and knee room for all. This row of seating can slide back and forth, recline or fold flat, allowing the boot capacity to be increased if required. This fully electric vehicle houses a Permanent Magnet Synchronous (PMS) Motor powered by a 44.5kWh battery that produces 110kW and 350Nm of torque. This allows the MG ZS EV to accelerate from 0-50km/h in 3.1 seconds and from 0-100km/h in 8.2 seconds. The AC charging time for the battery is 7.5 hours whilst the DC charging time (0-80%) is just 40 minutes. One of the major benefits of driving the ZS EV is that it is a zero-emissions vehicle, meaning you can drive around for as long as you like guilt free. The motor is also very quiet, greatly contributing toward the calm and relaxing driving environment. Performance wise, we found this MG with its solid braking system, superior cornering 56

abilities and traction control to be a lot of fun to drive and we always felt completely relaxed and in charge. Safety wise, the new ZS EV is the first MG to feature the full suite of MG Pilot driver assistance technology designed to ensure you arrive unscathed at your destination each and every time. These features include Active Emergency Braking (AEB), Speed Assistance Systems (SAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Lane Change Warning (LCW), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), Intelligent High Beam Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), side impact sensors, several air bags throughout the vehicle and so much more. Our verdict, the new MG ZS EV is a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly vehicle that is well worth the consideration of all those looking to purchase a family sized SUV. ✤

MARANELLO’S LATEST ONE-OFF REVEALED Ferrari has showcased a unique new car created by the marque’s designers to a client’s specific brief.

The Ferrari BR20, the latest addition to the Prancing Horse’s One-Off series, joins the most exclusive group in Maranello’s range: unique, absolutely bespoke cars crafted to the specifications of a client and designed as a clear expression of their own unique requirements. The two-seater V12 coupé was developed on the GTC4Lusso platform, which cleverly references the magnificent Ferrari coupés of the 1950s and ‘60s, without the slightest hint of nostalgia. It effortlessly incorporates styling themes typical of some of the most iconic 12-cylinders in Ferrari history, including the 410 SA and 500 Superfast. The GTC4Lusso’s two rear seats have been removed to add extra dynamism to the BR20’s ultra-sleek fastback line. The new car is three inches longer than the original, thanks to a specific rear overhang treatment. One of the cornerstones of this one-off was the radical modification made to the cabin volume. This in turn gave the design team, led by Flavio Manzoni, the freedom to conceive the innovative proportions that ultimately produced a powerful yet stylistically coherent exterior design theme. The new cabin design creates the impression of a pair of arches running lengthwise from A-pillar to rear spoiler. This modern take on Ferrari’s ’flying buttress’ theme firmly connects the car to signature Prancing Horse styling cues. To lighten the cabin, the black paint of the roof visually connects the windscreen to the rear screen. A muscular rear bumper melds beautifully with the aggressive look of the rest of the car: twin taillights create a visual dialogue with the tailpipes, which are lower and set into a prominent aerodynamic diffuser with active flaps on the underbody. Even the BR20’s twin round exhaust tips were designed especially 60

for this bespoke model. The vehicle’s many carbon-fibre details highlight the edgy dynamic characteristics and powerful performance while high, sinuous sills add an extra hint of dynamism to the lower section of the flanks. The wide front grille sports an upper carbon-fibre element, while unusual chrome side inserts help underline the car’s dynamic front stance. The BR20’s unique identity is further underscored by the front grille’s striking new horizontal slats that lend a powerful sense of three-dimensionality. The 20” tone-on-tone diamond-finish wheels were also created for this unique car. The BR20’s interior is no less impressive. The seats are trimmed in dark brown Heritage Testa di Moro leather and sport an exclusive pattern at the front as well as silver crossstitching. The cabin volume runs uninterrupted from the windscreen to the luggage compartment at the rear. Oak trim with carbon-fibre inserts adorns the rear bench and luggage deck, which conceals a deeper loading area when folded flat, as well as the door handles. Designed for a longstanding client who was deeply involved in every step of its creation, the Ferrari BR20 represents a true interpretation of the traditional coachbuilder’s art, successfully transforming an existing model in a masterful and unique way taking inspiration from and paying homage to the company’s core values of innovation and passion. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.FERRARI.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

THE MOST PURE BLACK Rolls-Royce has announced its most advanced Black Badge vehicle ever.

According to online resources, Black Badge is a trim level that adds more luxury, more power, improved handling and a darkened aesthetic. Rolls-Royce debuted Black Badge with Wraith and Ghost in 2016, followed by Dawn in 2017 then Cullinan in 2019. Now, a new iteration joins the family. The purest and most technologically advanced yet, Black Badge Ghost. Exterior To create the industry’s darkest black, 45kg of paint is atomised and applied to an electrostatically charged body before being oven dried. The vehicle then receives two layers of clear coat before being hand-polished by a team of four craftspeople to produce the marque’s signature high-gloss piano finish. To match this dramatic coachwork, the team created a process that allows Rolls-Royce hallmarks such as the highly-polished Spirit of Ecstasy and Pantheon Grille to be subverted to a darker shade. The bespoke 21-inch composite wheelset is designed in Black Badge house style and reserved for Black Badge Ghost. Interior Advanced luxury materials have been meticulously created and crafted. A complex but subtle weave that incorporates a deep diamond pattern rendered in carbon and metallic fibres has been used. And multiple wood layers are pressed onto the interior component substrates, using black Bolivar veneer for the uppermost base layer. Engineering Key to its potent character is the 'Architecture of Luxury', Rolls62

Royce’s proprietary all-aluminium spaceframe architecture that debuted with Phantom. This delivers extraordinary body stiffness and its flexibility and scalability allowed Ghost to be equipped with all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and the award-winning Planar Suspension system, which have been comprehensively re-engineered. The Rolls-Royce twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine remains. However, the flexibility has been exploited to generate an extra 29PS, creating a total output of 600PS. A further 50NM of torque has been added, for a total of 900NM. And the powertrain has received bespoke transmission and throttle treatments. To bolster confidence when exploiting Black Badge Ghost, the braking bite point has been raised and pedal travel decreased. NEW MATE ON THE MARKET Huawei take centre stage in the mid-sized laptop segment with the new MateBook 14.

T

hese days, laptops come in a wide variety of options, often making it confusing for those looking to buy a new device. FACT magazine is on a mission to review and reveal the very best laptops available on the market today in order to take some of the headache out of your selection process. This month we got our hands on the new MateBook 14, the latest laptop offering from tech giants HUAWEI. The first thing we have to mention about the sleek and stylish MateBook 14 is its superb 2K eye-comfort, 14-inch FullView HD display with a 2160x1440 resolution. This combined with a 90% screen-to-body ratio ensures a laptop experience that is very easy on the eye in more ways than one. We found the performance of the MateBook 14 to be very smooth and solid, thanks to the 11th Generation Intel Core processor and other Super Device Features. Backing up this performance is an 8GB dual-channel RAM and 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD, meaning users have plenty of storage space. A 56Wh high-capacity battery with supercharge support works together with Huawei’s smart power management system allowing you to enjoy up to 11 hours of battery life on a single full charge. The new and improved Shark Fin cooling system ensures your device always stays at the optimum temperature, whilst a 65W USB Type-C power adapter with support for multiple power output is included as standard. We love the way in which the new MateBook 14 is compatible with many other Huawei devices. For example, you can wirelessly project the 12.6-inch HUAWEI MatePad Pro to the MateBook 14 to form a Tablet-PC Multiscreen Collaboration that offers three different modes namely Mirror, Extend and Collaborate. This helps to bridge the gap between Windows and Android operating systems, enabling seamless cross-device collaboration, file sharing 64

and multi-screen control. Other devices compatible with this process are the HUAWEI Nova 8 that can be connected to the MateBook 14 to form a powerful Super Device, and the HUAWEI MateView that can be connected to the MateBook 14 via cable to provide an extra screen. This trio setup allows for the easy swapping of wireless and wired connections, allowing you to easily switch between work and personal modes. All-in-all we have to sing the MateBook 14’s praises as we found the entire experience to be both an enjoyable and informative one. Huawei have definitely produced a top contender in the midsized range segment. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.HUAWEI.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

W

hen it comes to purchasing a new smartphone, the process can be a little daunting. At FACT magazine we have made it our mission to try out some of the latest and greatest smartphones and to deliver our findings to you, our readers. This month we set our eyes on the Huawei Nova 9, a new device that is already drawing a lot of attention. The Nova 9, housing the EMUI 12 smart operating system and a powerful camera setup with all-new videography features, is the latest flagship device from Huawei. Design wise, it is only 7.77mm thick with a weight of 175g. The phone comes in two colour options namely black and the new Colour No.9 colourway, a lowsaturation bluish purple finish, created especially for this phone through an all-new Starry Flash AG Glass process. The Nova 9 features a Nebula-inspired Star Orbit Ring, along with a crystal clear, 16.68cm, 120Hz curved display with tapered surface. This stunning screen can display 1.07 billion colours and features a refresh rate of up to 120Hz as well as a 300Hz touch sampling rate, ensuring a super smooth experience for all, including ardent mobile gamers. In short, we found this new Huawei smartphone to be stylish, lightweight, responsive and an absolute pleasure to operate. 66

fact magazine

The camera setup, however, is where this smartphone really begins to shine. The rear camera system includes a 50MP Ultra Vision Camera, an 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera, a 2MP Depth Camera and a Macro Camera, allowing you to capture as close as 4cm. Geared for vlogging, both front and rear cameras support 4K shooting at 30fps making it easy to shoot short videos for social media. This combined with the Nova 9’s XD Fusion Engine ensures high quality capturing each and every time. We found the 32MP front camera great for taking selfies as well as for video shooting. There are also loads of AI effects and filters available for use that we found to be very functional and entertaining. The most novel feature of the camera setup is, in fact, a world first. Continuous Front/Rear Recording allows you to switch between the front and rear cameras within a single video file, meaning you don’t have to stop recording to change cameras. Dual-View Video recording enables users to capture highdefinition footage whilst talking to the camera, as well as to capture a close-up shot and a wide angle shot at the same time with no editing required. With loads of other impressive features associated with this smartphone, including the excellent battery life that takes only 38 minutes to fully charge, we believe you simply can’t go wrong with the outstanding new Huawei Nova 9. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.HUAWEI.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

A pet is part of the family and it’s really important to keep track of your dog. DogLog is an easy-touse app that contributes to making pet ownership a lot less worrisome. You can keep an eye on your pet’s health. It also extends to features such as daily pet-related tasks, chip number, timings of feeding and walking the dog. The app also includes a ton of features, advice, step-by-step tutorials, videos, interactive quizzes and more. And it allows you to form a group with fellow dog caretakers and set up reminders and alerts to help take care of your pet, including medication timings if needed. DogLog uses statistics and AI to get insights on the dog’s lifestyle and provides an option to export data directly to the vet. The app is also great for dog walkers and pet sitting. The daily activity log, includes timings for food, treats, walk, pee, teeth brushing, grooming, training and medicine along with an option of custom reminders. If you have more than one pet at home, you can create multiple profiles and store all your vet records with vet appointments and reminders.

With so many photography and photo editing apps available, it is quite difficult to select one. But to shoot and edit with a single app can be a plus, instead of shooting the footage and then exporting it to the app separately. ViewBug provides the option of taking footage in the app and then editing it with video editing tools. It also connects the user with other worldwide photographers and videographers giving a platform to view and share the work. Others can also comment and give you a positive feedback. Apart from its over-the-top editing tools and filters, it also hosts some of the best photography contests worldwide. One of the best features of the app is its ability to zoom in the photo to full screen to observe and edit minute detailing, even in video frames. Also, when you’re on the discover page, looking at other people’s photography and work, the app gives an option to learn all the important things of the photograph you’re viewing such as equipment used, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, tags and location.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT •

Your background is in finance, how did you become involved with NHC and how would you say working in the hospitality sector differs from your other roles? My finance background exposed me to a number of sectors globally, including the hospitality sector. Identifying and exploring investment opportunities, setting business strategies and plans, business restructuring and realignment has always been part of my career and definitely my passion. I was hired by NHC to continue the journey that the shareholders have started, and to assist the board in steering the company’s growth plans within the sector and deliver on the company’s strategy. The hospitality sector teaches you to focus on the finer details and the quality of service. It is not only about the numbers and financial returns, but about ensuring that your guests are satisfied with your service and feel valued and right at home. Do you see the sector in Bahrain recovering from the effects of the pandemic? How was the performance of The Diplomat Radisson Blu during the past two years? And how long do you estimate it will take for hospitality to return to pre-covid performance? It just takes a drive on the roads or a visit to the malls, restaurants and other venues in the country to see the signs and to know that the economy is recovering. The number of visitors has increased, and so have the occupancy rates at the different hotels. The performance of the Diplomat Radisson Blu over the course of the last two years was quite strong. We managed to achieve consistent operational profits, despite the challenges faced. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the government authorities and shareholders, as well as the hotel team’s relentless efforts and understanding. Sector data and intelligence indicates that hotel performance will return to pre-covid levels by 2024. However, the growth in supply and initiatives undertaken until then would have to be factored in and reflected in this estimate.

Through the ‘Carbon Negative. Planet Positive’ initiative, Radisson Hotel Group has set a new sustainability standard in the global hospitality industry and is becoming the world’s first hotel group to make meetings and events carbon negative. This campaign will help us strengthen our positioning as a leading brand for sustainable meetings and events. On a more personal level, what do you like to do when you are not working? I like to spend my time with my family or work in my garden. An occasional de-stressing dip in the pool and barbecue during the summer season is also something that I enjoy doing with my family and friends. What is one thing you would recommend all visitors to the Kingdom to see or try? Recommending one thing might be unfair! There is plenty to see and do in Bahrain. The country is rich in its culture and heritage, so a visit to the several archaeological and historic sites, as well as the national museum, is a must. The traditional souqs and modern malls present a pleasurable shopping experience. There are also plenty of restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines to try and several nice beaches to visit. To sum it up, indulge in the country’s culture, meet its friendly people and explore what it has to offer. And to do so, your journey has to start from The Diplomat Radisson Blu.

What are NHC’s & Radisson’s plans for the future? There’s plenty to anticipate and to be excited about, but the details cannot be disclosed at this stage. NHC is pursuing its approved growth strategy and is planning to collaborate with different entities / stakeholders within the Kingdom in doing so. Further enhancements and improvements to the property and the services are also to be expected. In line with the Crown Prince’s recent announcement of the aim for carbon neutrality in Bahrain by 2060, what steps are NHC and Radisson already taking and planning to help achieve this? Environmental awareness has always been pivotal in what we do at NHC. The company has taken, and continues to take, steps to contribute to the reduction of any negative impact on the environment. The use of energy-saving lights and refrigerant gas for the air-conditioning are some of the small steps taken to date. The company is also exploring the use of solar and wind energy to contribute to its power consumption. fact magazine

What first inspired you to join the hospitality industry? The hospitality industry is an exciting one to say the least. There are no two days that are the same, and that’s what makes it so interesting. I started out gaining experience through different departments and that attracted me to learn more about the industry. If anyone is looking for a job where they would never be doing something repetitive, I’d say the hospitality industry is definitely for them! What made you decide to come to Bahrain, a much smaller market than some of your previous properties? To say Bahrain is a much smaller market is an understatement as it serves as an important tourist destination in the region. Being a stable and secure country draws many visitors from all around, and that gives us a unique opportunity to serve them well with a new luxury property, the first Vida property by Emaar Hospitality Group. We are very excited to be here and to be the hottest destination in the Kingdom! Bahrain’s Crown Prince recently announced the intention for the Kingdom to become carbon neutral by 2060. I understand Vida has significant green credentials already. Please tell us about them and is this something specific to Vida or something the whole Emaar Hospitality Group is developing going forward? Yes, indeed we do. Vida is the first Hotel in the Kingdom to have our very own water sanitisation and bottling facility to provide clean drinking water and significantly reduce usage of singleuse plastic bottles. Our restaurants are also partnering with local farms and suppliers to source fresh produce locally and within the region. This reduces our carbon footprint as we seek

to source the best and freshest ingredients without the need for long-distance freight. Our parent company, Emaar, is committed to upholding the highest standards in environmental sustainability across all aspects of our operations. We operate in line with the ‘green vision’ of the UAE, working towards strengthening awareness on a greener lifestyle through energy and water efficiency. And that is something that Vida is also aligned with and that we are implementing for our hotel in Bahrain. If you had to pick just one outstanding feature about the hotel, what would it be and why? There're just too many to choose from! But if I had to pick one, it would be the fact that we are the only hotel on the island with both direct beach and mall access. Our sandy beachfront is almost 2km long, making it the longest promenade in Bahrain and featuring crystal clear waters. Once the upcoming Marassi Galleria opens, it will be the largest mall in the Kingdom with a wide array of shops from ultra-luxury to family favourites. You are quite new to Bahrain, what has been your favourite discovery on the island, so far? Bahrain has been a really nice surprise so far. There is a vibrant youth scene and charming residents that have been very hospitable. Fittingly, Vida is a haven for those who celebrate the best things in life – art, design, fashion and entrepreneurship. We hope our property will add excitement and inspire those who want to live the Vida life! The hotel will open officially on December 15 and there will be lots of exciting activities for everyone to enjoy. Fast forward many years, my style of cooking still remains richly rooted in traditional cooking, however I truly enjoy experimenting by taking traditional recipes and infusing them with modern techniques as well as exotic ingredients to create an unexpected twist. I always strive to deliver a truly unique experience for my guests. You are known for your passion to keep Italian traditional cooking alive. Where does that passion come from and how do you implement it while keeping your dishes fresh and contemporary? I consider myself a true Italian and, despite having lived around the world and experienced different cultures, I remain strongly connected to the Italian culture. My wife and my family are also all Italian. Wherever I go, I do my best to look for ingredients that match the same flavours of what you’ll find in Italy. For example, if I’m unable to find locally grown tomatoes that exude the same ripeness and richness of Mediterranean tomatoes, I consider it my responsibility to play with the flavour profile and elevate it as close as possible to what I remember as a child growing up on

a countryside farm. Whether that’s through creating flavourful sauces or changing the cooking technique to make it more Mediterranean, I believe there are endless ways to authentically enhance the flavour of the ingredients. You’ve also spoken of being heavily influenced by your years in Japan. How is this demonstrated in the menus you create? Puglia, the region which I’m from, and Japan have two things in common: the use of raw fish in both cuisines as well as the use and flavours of raw ingredients. Due to this, fusing Japanese and Mediterranean cuisine is a straightforward process for me. After many years of residing in Japan, I came to learn the art of how to balance the richness of soya sauce with Japanese citrus flavours. From there I slowly introduced Italian cooking with Japanese ingredients and techniques to form my own cooking style. A great example of this is our raw Red Snapper dish which features fresh burrata cheese with seaweed and ponzu sauce – a perfect blend of sashimi and the traditional Italian caprese salad. What is your signature dish and why is it popular? Vitello Tonnato is a pure Italian dish with a twist of Japanese. It’s currently featured on Bay View’s new menu. The veal is prepared the traditional Italian way – slowly cooked and served with tuna sauce. I then add tuna tataki and ginger gel before complementing it with nori seaweed croutons (instead of garlic croutons). Vitello Tonnato is a popular dish worldwide and this new contemporary cooking style typically leaves guests pleasantly surprised and curious for more! CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

W

e entered through the ornately carved doors and were greeted by a smiling hostess who led us to our table and, as we walked through the restaurant, we took in, once again, the lavish surroundings. The water features, pillars boasting more intricate carving and towering ceilings giving the impression of the Southeast Asian palaces both building and menu are inspired by. Seated overlooking the outside terrace, with views of the garden and its fabulous ponds and water features, we were quickly served prawn crackers and bottles of the venue’s homemade soda which combines the flavours of pomegranate, mint and just a touch of sugar and has a really refreshing kick. It seemed just minutes before our food began to arrive. Bang Bang Cauliflower is battered florets coated in Japanese rice cracker and sesame dressing with sriracha sauce and it was seriously moreish. If you think of cauli as purely an obligatory veggie to accompany your staple protein and spuds, this dish will prove you wrong. The coating is supremely crunchy and slightly sweet and the addition of fried sliced garlic adds strength to the flavour. A must-have for one of our diners. Next up, Sui Mai, handcrafted chicken and prawn Singapore dumplings were a delight, the softly yielding dumpling combined with green vegetable for an unexpected flavour sensation and the juicy prawns and chicken well seasoned enough to add a happy garlicky-ginger snap on the tongue. The Thai Khao Pad Sapparod, pineapple fried rice with shrimps, is definitely one for the Instagram account. The rice, which is cooked in coconut milk and pineapple juice, boasts the added elements of soy sauce, fish sauce and shallots. It’s served in a hollowed-out pineapple with a topping of eggy strings and is a dish that offered the perfect accompaniment to all the further options to come while also holding its own unique flavour. The first of the mains to arrive was the Steak Miso with garlic

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT mushrooms and miso butter sauce. Elegantly served on a mini grill with hot coals. This was a favourite with everyone and rightfully so. Miso is said to be the ultimate reference point for the flavour known as umami, deeply savoury but with a salty-sweet richness. Adding it to the perfectly pink steak gave an unbeatable combination. A piping hot dish of Pad Nam Prik Phao Talay, stir-fried calamari, prawns and seabass with Thai roasted chilli paste and basil leaves, was another winner, the seafood and fish firm and tasty and the sauce piquant and flavourful with just enough chilli heat to ignite an intense reaction from the taste buds. Definitely recommended. And, sticking with fish, Pla Yang Bai Tong – a whole chargrilled sea bass with lemongrass, coriander root and sweet basil was a complete palate pleaser. One colleague who took some home announced that the flavour was even better two days later, the herbs and spices having continued to gently marinate the fish bringing an even more exotic flavour to the firm white flesh. We were treated to the ridiculously large Edo platter, containing maki and nigiri sushi alongside huge helpings of sashimi sufficient to feed a large family, or even a small army! Every bit was super fresh and the selection of raw fish, from salmon, tuna and yellow tail to eel, octopus and sea bream, made for interesting flavours in the sushi and gave each of us the opportunity to try at least one option we’d never tasted before. The presentation was pristine and this was an all-round triumph. Last, but by no means least, came Kha Nom Kon Wan – a sharing dessert platter of mango sticky rice, chocolate lava and mango cheesecake with coconut, chocolate and vanilla ice creams. It looked almost too good to eat, but only almost, and we quickly dug in. Every single thing was outstanding but the mango cheesecake was the star of the show with its crumbly biscuit base and a topping of fresh mango and raspberries shielding a filling of absolutely delicious, creamy mango mousse. Beyond satiated, we were ready to answer the question of whether things have changed over the course of the last 20 months. From us it was an emphatic no, if anything things have only got better. ✤

AUTHENTICITY MEETS FLAVOUR With a facelift and a new chef, Team Fact couldn’t wait to check out the fresh menu at Mondo, Taste of Italy, at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa.

DINING DELIGHT •

G

ood food and good company are two of life’s simplest yet greatest pleasures. The company was guaranteed and, knowing the menu in question was going to be Italian, we had no doubt it would be an unforgettable evening at Mondo, Taste of Italy. The kitchen is orchestrated by Chef Raffaele, originally from Sicily, who calls on his Italian roots to provide all the authenticity an Italian restaurant needs. He is also responsible for choosing the ingredients that are used in his kitchen, from the organic olive oil, from a small Italian farm where he personally knows the owner, to the original imported tomato sauce and flour used in his dishes. Besides having Chef Raffaele to make sure everything is genuinely Italian; Mondo has received a complete revamp and is now expressing a modern yet cosy and family-driven atmosphere. The star of the place – a Neapolitan brick oven that travelled all the way from Italy to make sure we can get a legitimate Pizza Napolitana in Bahrain. We arrived at the restaurant at the end of a busy week and were happy to be pampered by Mondo’s friendly team. The enhanced grape drink served to us was organic and vegan from an Italian vineyard in Puglia. An enjoyable blend that was perfect to pair with our food choices. As all memorable meals start, we had a selection of appetisers that are a must-have in every Italian menu. The Burrata Pugliese was a buttery and creamy ball of mozzarella also from Puglia, accompanied by charred bell peppers, olives and delectable eggplant and basil sauces that added a hint of intense flavour to this oozy, melting cheese perfection. The Carpaccio of Angus Beef melted in the mouth and was made of marinated rare Angus beef, rocket leaves, capers, Parmigiano shavings and a touch of precious truffle oil, which added a distinct flavour. The Octopus Salad was composed of thin octopus slices, green leaves, crispy capers, cherry tomatoes, olives, orange, EVOO (when olives are crushed into a pulp without any chemicals) and lemon dressing. And to please the plant-based diner, the Carpaccio di Verdure made with seasonal, marinated and fireroasted vegetable carpaccio that had an explosion of flavour, highlighting each vegetable in the composition. It was time to try the most popular dish in Italian cuisine – pizza! And we couldn’t have been more excited to appraise the creations of Chef Raffaele and his Neapolitan brick oven. We tried three different flavours. Margherita, with its simplicity and spot-on mix of tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and basil. Our favourite of the evening, which had one of my dining companions gasping with delight – Tartufo, made with buffalo mozzarella, Parmigiano, generous fresh shavings of black truffle and Porcini mushrooms straight from the Italian grounds. And Pescatora, a tomato pizza with calamari, mussels and prawns with a touch of EVOO and oregano – a must-order for seafood lovers. The dough is exactly what you expect when having pizza as a delicacy; it has that charred flavour from the oven, perfect puffed-up crust and precise texture with not a hint of doughiness. fact magazine

• DINING DELIGHT

In the pasta feast, the consistency of the pasta was at the excellency level, not too al dente and far from being too soft. Just perfect! And we had a good selection to taste. The variety went from simple yet extremely well-seasoned Penne Arrabbiata to Linguine Vongole prepared with clams, EVOO, chilli, cherry tomato and garlic. Highly recommended by my dining companion, the Truffle & Ricotta Ravioli was definitely a winner. The thin, firm, and well-structured pasta packets were filled with ricotta and fresh black truffle prepared in butter sauce and crispy sage. A dish that got an ovation from the entire table and that you must try when dining at Mondo. Of course, we cannot forget the Risotto ai Porcini which was just the comfort food we were expecting. Beautifully creamy rice, richly infused with plenty of parmesan and a generous serving of Porcini mushrooms. Absolute bliss. The food kept coming, and we kept enjoying every bite. The Carne (meat) and Pesce (fish) arrived; first the Tagliata Prime Rib-Eye with blistered tomatoes and chimichurri sauce that did justice to this fine cut, starring the meat’s succulence. The beef was followed by the Island Style Seabass, giving centre stage to an oven-baked fish with ultra-thin slices of herby potatoes, Heirloom tomato and an earthy and minty touch of thyme – a very traditional dish that was extremely tasty and also beautiful to look at. To finalise this banquet, we delved into the dessert selection. The famous Cannoli originated in the Sicilian city of Palermo 82

fact magazine

(with a Sicilian chef, it was a must-try) was crispy and filled with sweetened ricotta cheese, candied lemon and orange, pistachio and chocolate drops. A mandatory pick for Cannoli enthusiasts. At Mondo, the vanilla panna cotta is called Espressisimo. Yes, it is made with rich Italian coffee in the form of espresso jelly and coffee granita. Even those that don’t particularly like coffee will fall for it, as evidenced by one of our party who found the unadorned panna cotta to be a delightfully creamy treat. And last but not least, everyone’s favourite, the Semifreddo al Limone, a semi-frozen lemon cake, with almond and pistachio crust, summer berries and berry coulis, was the perfect combination of sweet and sharp, an interesting texture combination and a gift to our palates. We also highly recommend trying the cucumber and mint granita that gives you a wonderful and refreshing sensation after satisfying your cravings for an authentic Italian Osteria experience. The food at Mondo was the exact delight you look for when dining out; now, it is on you to find the best company to fully enjoy some of life’s simplest pleasures. ✤

GREAT FOOD AND FUN VIBES Fuddruckers, or Fudds, as it’s affectionately known, proudly claims to serve ‘The World’s Greatest Hamburgers’ so, as the company celebrates its 25th anniversary in Bahrain, Liz O’Reilly went along to try them for herself.

FOODIE CORNER •

I

am, and always have been, a big fan of Fudds’ breakfasts. I can often be found tucking in at my desk, my colleagues drooling over the delicious aroma emanating from my regular Western Omelette Platter and hash brown potatoes. That said, it’s been a good while since I’ve actually visited one of the restaurants so, with that proud boast ringing in my ears, I was excited to head down and check out a brand-new meaty offering. The Adliya branch that my companions and I visited is bright and welcoming. Yellow and red seating with large TVs showing various sports as R&B music plays in the background, make for a fun atmosphere. A cosy corner with comfy easy chairs, more large TVs dedicated to sporting events and walls decorated by American football team crests beckoned us to settle in for the afternoon. These game zones can be found in both the Adliya and Al Liwan, Hamala branches. I was specifically there to try the newest offering, the Triple Cheese Double Smash Burger, of which more later. But first, we opted for a selection from the massive menu to get our taste buds in the mood. We chose a Classic Caesar Salad and Lemon & Pepper Shrimp to share as starters. I loved the salad, not just for the crispy lettuce and generous amounts of parmesan shaves and crunchy croutons – all of which were, indeed, impressive – but more for the fact that it was not drowned in dressing. Much as I enjoy the delicate mix of garlic, Dijon mustard et al, far too many places give in to the temptation to lash it on so thickly that no other flavour stands a chance. That was not the case

here and the salad was all the better for it. The shrimp too were a triumph. Fat and juicy, hand battered and accompanied by an aioli sauce of garlic paste, parsley and mustard which caused one of my dining companions a mini foodgasm at the first bite. I decided to try the American Breakfast to see how it would measure up to my much-loved desk version and, oh my! To say they had me at the sausages would be a complete understatement. I don’t think I have ever eaten a good beef or chicken sausage and I was certainly skeptical. But Fudds’ beef sausages made me a believer. They’re super tasty made with the perfect combination of herbs and beef that is neither so lean as to be chewy nor so fatty as to leave an unpleasant residue. They say every day’s a school day and I definitely learned a lesson. One of my dining companions went for the Rosemary Barbecue Chicken which is a huge plate containing two charbroiled chicken breasts glazed with rosemary barbecue sauce and topped with cheddar cheese and bacon. Additions of steamed veggies, a baked potato and Texas toast made this a dish too far but she really enjoyed the tender chicken breasts with their flavoursome sauce before admitting defeat half way through the potato. The other dived into the Cowboy Burger – a charbroiled burger glazed with chipotle BBQ sauce topped with balsamic onion relish and melted cheddar cheese served with mixed lettuce, sliced tomatoes and chipotle mayonnaise dressing on a freshly baked bun. This went down so well that he was, in fact, speechless!

• FOODIE CORNER At last, it was time for me to try that Triple Cheese Double Smash Burger and I was more than a little excited since the three cheeses in question were mozzarella, cheddar and blue – three of my absolute favourites. The new burger was borne proudly to my table and looked amazing. Big chunky, juicy beef patties one atop the other with the warm cheese melting gently down the sides. The accompaniments of fresh onions and secret burger sauce added to high-quality, wellseasoned beef and the totally winning cheese combo made for a complete taste explosion. If you try one new thing on your next Fudds trip, make sure it’s this. You won’t be disappointed. You’d think we’d be stuffed by now, right? And you would be correct. But there’s always room for dessert, no? So, we finished our feast with a Fudds Volcano – a meal in itself. Chocolate cake with an explosion of chocolate sauce served with a chocolate-dome-coated vanilla ice cream. Do I even need to say more? I don’t think so. ✤

A

s you approach this stunning property the appearance is that of a citadel, presenting its ornate walls to the outside world but, for guests, all windows face inwards showing fabulous views of the encircled gardens, pool and beach. And the interiors are just as impressive as those protective walls. It is bright and spacious with a preponderance of marble and light fixtures. The curved sides, open windows and tessellated ceiling all reflect light and vastness to play with the sense of space around you. With its modernist Art Deco influence and consummate dedication to service, the hotel echoes the traditions and style of Middle Eastern culture whilst embracing international flair. Arriving late-afternoon, we first paid a visit to Narguile Shisha Lounge, a compact circular space situated by the shore. As we entered, we felt the cool breeze coming in from the sea, bringing with it a fresh wave of November mist, and were embraced by the orange of the sunset garnishing this little piece of paradise with a rich golden glow. Soon after we were seated, the aroma of their Arabic hot and cold mezze danced towards us, already making our mouths water. The platter’s main star was the lamb chops – wellcooked, soft, easy to chew, and offering a spectacular taste experience. Our server also kindly brought us some manaeesh, warm, soft, generously garnished with zaatar and labneh and decorated with ripe and full cherry tomatoes. These typical Middle Eastern dishes were accompanied by freshly-made tabouleh and fatoush, as well as falafel and halloumi sticks, which were perfectly breaded on the outside and flawlessly soft on the inside. A mezze would, however, not be complete without some classic hummus and mutabal, which balanced the ideal amount of smokiness and freshness. We also enjoyed some shisha, which complemented the experience. And left the lounge feeling satisfied yet ever hungry for more. However, it was time to head to our ‘room’ which had some unique touches. The Gulf Opera Suite is perched on the rooftop of the hotel opening out to a lavish deck accompanied by its own private infinity pool. The room overlooks the pristine beach front, garden and pool area. The sumptuous suite is dominated by decadent embellishments and plush carpets. Spectacular window panels allow for the sun to produce a warm shimmering glow over its features. The linen is crisp and palatable to one that desires luxury. Every inch of these elegantly designed fixtures, built to world-class specifications and stylishly decorated, says luxury. They come complete with living and dining areas, spacious bathrooms and individual work and relaxation areas. The walls reflect Bahraini iconography, yet the contemporary fixtures and ornate objects are reminiscent of France. The furniture itself is modern yet traditional – a paradox of comfort. A low hanging chandelier with an incredibly intricate pattern hung from the ceiling above the dining table in the living room further alluded to the grandeur of the accommodation. The en-suite bathroom ran adjacent to the bedroom and occupied the same length. The toilet was modestly hidden in its own partition, leaving the twin wash basins, shower and bath all open in a vast continuous space. The bed cradled your body to allow for an all-encompassing fact magazine

• STAYCATION embrace, with the finest quality linens and cushioning for the ultimate voyage to dream land. The suite presents an homage to Bahraini homes of yesteryear amongst the patterns of the panelling and the entwined etched beams throughout the ceilings. The windows filled the far side of the room letting in inspirational views and a panorama of the coastal skyline, pool and luscious foliage that adorns the grounds. There are 262 sea-facing rooms and suites with exclusive access to the beach and pool, all with private balconies. Once settled we decided to try Rivaaj, Sofitel’s much-admired authentic Indian restaurant. On entering, we were immediately taken by the splendor of the magnificent interiors. Decorated with ruby-red velvet walls and draped with richly embroidered tapestry, it left us awe-struck. The sound of water and traditional Indian music further put our minds at ease. We were served glasses of Anarkali, a customary pomegranate drink made with rosewater, a dash of lemon, soda and garnished with pomegranate seeds that float on the surface of the rich ruby-red liquid. The hint of rosewater perfectly juxtaposed the drink’s distinct zesty taste, and the beads of pomegranate added a particular rush of flavour. Then came a plate of pani puri, a classic Indian snack, filled with potato and garnished with some sev, coriander and a few pomegranate seeds. The redolence of the pani matched exquisitely with the spice of the potato and the delicate crunch of the puri, which, when devoured, produced an explosion of flavour in our mouths. It was difficult to choose mains from the extensive menu. Lamb biryani, dal makhani, with a side of jeera rice was simply to die for: not too greasy, not too heavy, not too spicy and well-seasoned with a host of spices. The dal was equally heavenly, with light hints of cumin, cardamom, bay leaves and tomato, as well as the vivid taste of butter and cream. Flaunting a magnificent orange-brown hue, this delectable dish was served in a traditional copper pot. The jeera rice turned out to be a fine accompaniment to the dal, being soft, steamy and beautifully fragranced with crisp roasted jeera seeds and freshly chopped coriander, not to mention a touch of butter – always a welcome addition! We followed dinner with a stroll along the beach, where we noticed that the sunbeds are well spaced out for Covid safety. Making our way to the pier, we enjoyed a cool drink as we watched the moon over the waves and just enjoyed the ultimate feeling of relaxation before heading back to our suite for the perfect night’s sleep. Though reluctant to leave that magnificent bed, we were up and out early in the morning to head back to town but those few hours of utter indulgence were the perfect antidote to workday woes and stress. We’d highly recommend a mid-week break at this stunning property if you get the chance. ✤

O

nly 15 minutes away from Velana International Airport, Male, by speedboat, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa will have you in awe from the moment it comes into view. We arrived at the resort’s jetty to the sound of beautiful beating drums mixed with serene ocean melodies. Handmade shell necklaces were placed around our necks as we received the warmest welcome ever. We hopped onto the hotel’s buggy and the food and beverage (F&B) manager escorted us to our room, giving us a quick tour of the island on the way. Yes, it is such a small narrow island – but in the best private way possible! An appealing old tree, inhabited by green and purple orchids, marks the starting point. The spacious reception on one side; 24 Degrees, the all-day dining restaurant, on the other. A shop and a library are nearby and a long, slim path under a surreal canapé of local trees, travels among beach villas and over-water villas. Just as we reached the lagoon where our Deluxe Lagoon Pool Villa was located, we peeked at the infinity pool. A sign said Deep End Restaurant and we instantly admired the intelligent name! The villa was snug with a warm atmosphere, and well laid out to accommodate all your vacation needs. Our favourite part was the private infinity pool, surrounded by a chaise longue with a table and two arm chairs. We also loved how the TV stand doubled as the mini bar where the coffee machine and kettle were placed thoughtfully. The bed was just the right size and a ‘Welcome to Taj’ message was prettily laid across it using carefully cut coconut leaves… this takes serious time – and we really appreciated the gesture.

Adi, our friendly butler, went through the itinerary with us then swiftly left us to ourselves telling us he would be back at 7pm to take us for dinner. We were hungry, we unpacked quickly, slipped into our swimwear and headed to 24 Degrees to order the mixed seafood grill. A huge plate filled our table; shrimps, calamari, mussels, three different kinds of fish steaks including salmon, and the local tuna, plus the king of all seafood, the local reef lobster. With green salad and fries, this plate was enough for more than two people. Afterwards, we headed back to our own pool for a much-needed chill. At 7pm sharp, Adi was at the door. We were ready to experience Deep End. In the Maldives, and in Taj Exotica, you are always surrounded by wood, from the furniture and villas to the green environs. Such a privilege not to be trapped in concrete. Deep End is the only restaurant built on top of the water, in a ring shape. Tables are arranged around an opening in the middle that allows you to look down to the crystal-clear sea water and watch baby sharks swimming… incredible! The restaurant serves a regular and a vegetarian set menu. The latter offers a light tomato soup and delicious garlicky asparagus risotto. Whilst the seafood soup and reef lobster grill are just as delightful! We followed up with the rich and creamy chocolate mousse with olive oil-based ice cream – one tasty culinary surprise! Sleep cannot be more comfortable than in the bed of a fivestar resort. We woke up the next day all fresh and energised. The extravagant floating breakfast arrived perfectly on time. We jumped in the water and took great Insta pictures. The breakfast options range from porridge to omelette and eggs Benedict, 110 fact magazine

Maldivian Massuni and tuna curry, to masala dosa, Korean rice and beef bowl, bread, waffles, and a great jam selection as well as fresh fruits. To enjoy this amazing selection to the max, we had to reschedule our first activity of the day. Snorkelling is a must. Using the snorkelling kit provided to all guests by the resort’s diving centre, we took the fixed ladder down to the lagoon. The water was crystal clear, and the fins made swimming easy. The lagoon is home to a rainbow of fish, it was amazing! Our next lunch took a massive luxurious twist when the F&B manager suggested trying the ‘200-dollar Pizza’. At the pool restaurant, with million-dollar views, the executive chef personally laid it down at our table. A colony of the world’s most premium ingredients. A quattro of duck and foie gras from France, Wagyu beef carpaccio and black olives from Australia, prosciutto and black truffle from Parma, Italy, and finally homegrown reef lobster, are laid on a crispy base covered with a generous layer of cream cheese and garnished with Iranian caviar and edible gold leaves with a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar. A complimentary sparkling beverage accompanied the incredible meal to leave us in total awe! Another extraordinary food feat we tried was the jaw-dropping Lobster Burger. On a huge wooden board, the burger comes with fries, onion rings, and both green and coleslaw salads. This burger is bursting with tender flavourful lobster meat, and is one gigantic meal for two (or more). What an experience! Other activities to put on your list include the discovery drive to watch baby black tip sharks feed on tuna chunks, as well as the guided snorkel trip which is a truly indescribable experience one glance under the water is enough to capture your emotions. We also witnessed the stingray feeding on the resort’s beach before we headed back to the speedboat docked at the jetty for the perfect Sunset Cruise and dolphin watching. At Taj Exotica Resort & Spa many of our dreams came true; seeing a pod of wild dolphins was the most soul-elevating gift. With a sunset worth a thousand words – this is one place that will always hold a special place in our hearts. ✤

Why Is It Worth Watching?

“A great show with a gripping storyline and cinematography, with each scene being a single puzzle piece in the complex storyline.”

On My Block Need to Know:

On My Block is a compelling and engaging teen drama, with the fourth and final season having been recently released. We see four friends attempting to navigate high school and trying to stay alive as they get involved in the dangerous and dark underbelly of their neighbourhood.

Creators: Lauren Lungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, Jeremy Haft

Cast: Diego Tinoco, Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray

Apart from being a funny and laid-back film to watch during the festive season, this story is surprisingly heartfelt as it explores the modern difficulties of dating. We accompany Natalie Bauer (Nina Dobrev), a journalist who documents her various dating disasters online. Just as she starts losing hope, she meets the perfect guy: attractive, charming and sweet. The only problem is she has never seen him face-to-face! As a romantic gesture, she flies to the east coast of the US to surprise him for Christmas, only to discover she has been cat-fished by Josh Lin (Jimmy O. Yang). To make it up to her, he agrees to set her up with the real man in the photos, Tag (Darren Barnet), as long as she pretends to be his girlfriend to impress his family. As the complicated charade of dishonesty starts, there are some surprises in store. This endearing and cute movie is the perfect Christmas romcom to relax with during the holidays.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This is an interesting show. It stands out amongst so many teen dramas as it tackles the reality of many teens in America – living in dangerous and underfunded areas. In it, we encounter four best friends, Monsé Finnie (Sierra Capri), Ruby Martinez (Jason Genao), Jamal Turner (Brett Gray) and Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco), as they start high school and deal with adolescent drama and romance. However, the show also portrays the difficulties of being part of one of the minority groups in the United States. A great show with a gripping storyline and cinematography, with each scene being a single puzzle piece in the complex storyline. The development of the characters and relationships throughout the series makes the show worth the time. 112 fact magazine

Win Me Something By Kyle Lucia Wu

POP/SOUL/JAZZ

R&B/SOUL

30 By Adele

An Evening With Silk Sonic By Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak

With all the hype around the first music from Adele in several years, we felt it would be remiss not to give this a spin. After all, it became the year’s biggest seller in the US after just three days. The music press has, for the most part, been kind, recognising the rawness of emotion from beginning to end. The singer herself has acknowledged that this album is about “divorce baby, divorce” and, taken in that context, it could be argued that it is both strong and, probably, cathartic. But easy listening, it surely is not. We quite liked Strangers by Nature which sounds a bit like a classic movie track from the 1950s or ‘60s. Even the big sort of chorus harks back to that era. Cry Your Heart Out comes off as probably one of the most upbeat tunes but, as the name suggests, has some pretty miserable lyrics. My Little Love talks about taking the blame [for her child’s unhappiness] and sounds like an homage to her son with sweet conversational snippets between the two thrown in. Maybe we’ve become too accustomed to music-lite and this definitely requires a certain level of listener maturity. We could imagine sobbing along to this post-breakup, surrounded by tissues and wailing at the injustice of the world. Maybe it would be more palatable one song at a time but with five of the 13 tracks coming in at six minutes plus, getting through the whole thing in a single sitting is not something we’ll try again in a hurry. Final verdict, very glad that 30 is only the title and there weren’t actually 30 songs to endure. 114 fact magazine

Motown was described by Time magazine as ‘joyous, sad, romantic, mad, groovin', movin' music’. And, if you’re down for the 2021 version of just that vibe, then this is for you. With a track list of just eight songs and an intro, this is like a whole party squeezed into just over half an hour! And, with just one exception, every one of these will have you on your feet and groovin’ to the beat (yes, we are officially old!). Fly As Me is seriously funky with a little bit of rap early on. What’s not to love about a line like ‘You deserve to be seen with somebody as fly as me’? After Last Night is funny and we can’t make up our minds if it’s tongue in cheek cliché of some of the 1970s’ best, think a response to the ‘Walrus of Lurve’. Smokin’ Out The Window – They’re even suited and booted and holding cigs. It’s a little bit bitter but funny as heck. It’s Motown 21 with all that was great about bands such as The Four Tops and The Temptations brought bang up to date. And, for that one exception, no album would be complete without a little bit of heartbreak and Put A Smile On is it with lyrics that will resonate with guys and girls alike. On 777 Bruno Mars is back to his Energizer Bunny best, tunefully rapping over a cracking percussion-heavy background. This just sounds like fun. And Blast Off is the perfect finale to an album that is an homage to a kinder time.

The novel follows Willa Chen, a 24-year-old girl from Brooklyn who finds a gig as a nanny for a wealthy Manhattan couple, although she doesn’t even like children herself. Although the novel is packed with big emotional punch, readers find Willa in a foreign land trying to find herself whilst experiencing a sense of family, something she never had growing up. Wu wonderfully interweaves Willa’s adulthood with a series of flashbacks including her childhood traumas and haunting experiences. Through the novel one can figure that Willa’s preconceptions about children disappear as she fully submerses herself in the job and its responsibilities. This novel is full of well-structured, seemingly small moments.

Burntcoat

by Sara Hall The covid novels are coming up and this one is quite a winner! Set against the backdrop of the pandemic, Burntcoat explores art, love and grief experienced during this time. This powerful, well-constructed novel is set in a near-future England and narrates the story of a 59-yearold artist, Edith Harkness, as she embarks on a journey of making a sculpture to memorialise the deaths of close ones. It sensitively narrates Edith’s seminal moments. In the scenario of a ‘disaster’ with Edith in her warehouse, the shortage of groceries and basic household goods, curfews and looting take centre stage. There’s the angle of love in Burntcoat, a crucial element, resonating with the existential threat. A powerful story, rich in description setting a benchmark for pandemic fiction!

What We’re (Still) Talking About NASA And The Asteroid

Psycho Killers

Tragedy

Sounds like the title for a bad space movie, doesn’t it? In fact, Armageddon already went there back in 1998. But this time, it’s for real! Well, not the space rock bit but the bit about NASA launching a spacecraft in an attempt to knock an, allegedly, harmless asteroid off its path. In late November NASA launched the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket which carries, in its nose, a DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) which, in about 10 months’ time, will plough into the asteroid Dimorphos. Its mission is to knock the space rock off track, proving

We were much amused recently to see social media and even some of the mainstream rags reporting that teams at the UK’s Liverpool University and Liverpool John Moores University have come up with a test called the CATTri+ that owners can use to discover whether their beloved moggy is, in fact, a feline psycho. At first, we wondered why. After all, most cat owners we know would readily admit that their pets can sometimes be a little ‘challenging’. But, it seems there is a laudable cause behind what, at first, seemed like a frivolous study.

The world watched and listened in horror as it was revealed that up to 27 would-be migrants had died in the English Channel in a bid to cross from France to the UK. Taking to the water in flimsy dinghies as cold, wet and windy weather made the journey more perilous than usual. There has been much commentary on the fact that many of these unfortunate people are coming from countries such as Iraq and Syria and are well aware that international law requires them to claim asylum in the first ‘safe’ country they reach. Some have even been interviewed saying they cannot get legal visas for the

such technology is capable of the job should it be necessary in the future. There is much mention in the mainstream media of the fact that Dimorphos is simply a relatively small chunk of rock, harmlessly meandering its way through space, though rather close to Earth. But, if you’ve ever watched the 1998 movie Deep Impact, you, like us, might just be wondering if all is as innocent as it seems.

Researchers hope it will improve humanfeline interactions and, eventually, lead to a reduction in the number of cats landing in shelters. However, it is no surprise to us that lead researcher Rebecca Evans told the Daily Mail that: “It is likely that all cats have an element of psychopathy as it would have once been helpful for their ancestors in terms of acquiring resources.” Who’d have thought it?!

UK, so this is their only way in. Many will condemn them and ask what drives people to risk their lives in such attempts. But, in truth, it is only necessary to look at the conditions in their home countries to, at least partly, understand. Whatever your view, the pointless and avoidable loss of 27 lives, some of them children, is nothing short of a tragedy. And there’s no doubt governments across the world need to act.
