time with family and friends to make the most of the Ramadan season. Our Cover Story this month brings together a whole range of options for those special gatherings at Iftar and Ghabga, where

you can enjoy a stunning range of traditional foods, games and activities that really illustrate the spirit of this special time. Since delivery and takeaway boxes have become so popular over the last two years, we’ve included options for ‘Ramadan To Go’ too. And, of course, during this special time, our thoughts turn to giving back to the community, so we’ve rounded up some ways for you to do just that with charity initiatives across the island. In the dining section, we got a sneak peek at what some of the hotels will be offering during the Holy Month and checked out an impressive new venue in Amwaj. And, while we’re on the subject of checking out, my lucky colleague took a spin in the latest offering from Mercedes-Benz. It sounds like luxury on wheels. Another lucky staffer headed to Istanbul for a brief but glorious visit. Read all about it in our Travel section. And our photographers have been out and about at lots of events – see if you can spot yourself in our Society pages. As always, we have our regular round-ups of news from the worlds of gadgets, motoring, arts, culture, entertainment and lots more besides. Make sure to keep us with you throughout the Holy Month so you’ll always know where your next meal is coming from. And please accept our warmest wishes from all at FACT Bahrain.

GOLDEN GULF Head to Manama Souq to experience the Kingdom’s first ever Manama Gold Festival. If you’ve lived long enough in Bahrain or are a tourist scouring the island for interesting things to do, we bet you’ve heard of Manama Souq. Steeped in local tradition and the hub for many of the Kingdom’s art and culture festivals, it is set to host the debut edition of Manama Gold Festival, organised by Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA) in cooperation with Manama Digital Museum – The Manama Story. It’s a civil initiative concerned with documenting social, urban and commercial life in Manama and restoring its leading roles. Visit the Souq until April 20 to visit the many shops selling gold, pearls and precious stones, which are participating in the festival. You can also enjoy other things while you’re at it; there are weekly prizes and a weekly event, featuring Bahraini shows, traditional clothes’ shows, documentaries on the gold industry and trade in Bahrain, activities for children, a bazaar and more. Bahraini gold is most sought after as it’s usually 21- and 24-carat and hallmarked. Further, it’s available in a wide range of styles from traditional Bahraini designs – the iconic gold coin among other things – through to internationally inspired collections particularly Indian, as well as modern and contemporary – it spoils you for choice! We recommend you check out Gold City – a building full of gold shops – which is the relatively newer 14

fact magazine

gold market in Manama Souq, and the independent shops dotting the lane of the Souq near the Hindu temple – the original gold market. You can find ready-to-wear collections and bespoke pieces that come studded with diamonds, pearls and precious and semi-precious stones. Bahrain’s pearls are equally infamous. In fact, the pearl industry is what drove the economy until the early 1930s until it suffered a setback with the entry of cheap Japanese imitations. Bahrain harvests a variety of pearls that are used in jewellery-making, including a rare variety, marshush, which has pink overtones and ranks higher than the premium Jiwan (G1 – Grade 1) pearls. There have been several initiatives to harvest the Kingdom’s legacy as the centre of pearling: In 2012, the Bahrain Pearling Trail was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and has since been widely promoted. Bahrain started organising diving tours and expeditions in 2017 and 2018 witnessed the first edition of Marathon, which offered aspirant divers and enthusiasts a platform to learn the nuances of pearl diving from the last generation of yesteryear divers. ✤

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT Shedding the spotlight on Bahrain’s international cricket accolade – a world record by women. The Bahrain women’s cricket team broke a series of international records at the 2022 GCC Women’s Gulf Cup, a women’s T20I (WT20I) cricket tournament, which was played at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman. It was a proud moment for team Bahrain to set the highest total ever recorded in a WT20I with a mammoth score of 318 runs for the loss of one, that too without any sixes. Bahrain beat Saudi Arabia by a massive margin of 269 runs. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia played their first official WT20I matches during this tournament. Leading the team to victory was Deepika Rasangika who hit the captain’s knock, scoring a whopping 161 runs off just 66 balls in the seventh match of the championship. At 161 not out, Deepika is also the first woman to register a 150-plus score in this format of the game, shattering the previous score of 148 by Australian cricketer, Alyssa Healy, against Sri Lanka in 2019. Further, team Bahrain broke the record for the highest run rate in an innings with an NRR (net run rate) of 15.9. According to social media, more often than not we find sportswomen not being taken seriously. Especially those that play male-dominated sports like cricket – a gentleman’s game. Remember the incident where Mithali Raj, Captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket team was asked at a media round table who her favourite male player is? She slammed the journalist with the counter question: “Do you ask the 16

fact magazine

same question to a male cricketer? Do you ask them who their favourite female cricketer is?” Her response sparked a series of debates on whether it’s high time that women in sport are treated equally as their male counterparts. Proving the naysayers wrong, Deepika, like Mithali and many others, have set the record straight. And kudos to the Bahrain Cricket Federation (BCF) and the Kingdom of Bahrain for encouraging women athletes and sportspersons! Speaking on the victory, Hatim Dadabhai, Bahrain Cricket Federation (BFC) President said: “In 2021, the BCF embarked on a journey to drive women’s empowerment through cricket by building a robust community of women cricketers. Promotional drives were implemented across the Kingdom in schools, universities, sports and social clubs, expat communities, professional associations, residential compounds and corporates to identify talented women cricketers, ranging from school girls and college students to mums, working women and others. Free training was then provided to all the talented candidates after which the women’s league was established. It served as a foundation to create Bahrain’s women's national team.” ✤

WORTH A SHOT! Whether you’re alcohol-free out of respect for your faith or just want to ween yourself off fortified beverages for health or other reasons, we have big news. Lyre, the acclaimed non-alcoholic spirit brand, has announced its arrival in the Middle East. The renowned and award-winning Australian brand offers non-alcoholic spirits made from all-natural ingredients contained in exquisitely designed bottles giving a vintage and classic look. The spirits all resemble and taste like their enhanced equivalents and include several options, of which Amaretti, Italian Spritz, American Malt, Dark Cane, Dry London and Classico (sparking grape) are currently available in the region. The brand also offers a pre-mixed ready-to-drink range which includes American Malt & Cola as well as a Dark and Spicy option that evokes the popular Dark ‘n’ Stormy highball cocktail normally made with Jamaican beverage and ginger beer. Each bottle tells a specific story with a small, illustrated animal creating a particular narrative and personifying each crafted spirit. Each animal also aligns with the origin of the spirit. For instance, the Dry London has a London pigeon on it, while the American Malt has an American bear on it. “Our plans for the Middle East have surprisingly little to do with culture or geography. It’s more about being in tune with society as a whole,” said Mark Livings, Lyre’s Founder 18

fact magazine

and CEO who started the company’s journey in 2019. “From Millennials to Gen Zs, we’re all drinking less than before, and ‘mindful drinking’ transcends borders. We’ve even won awards against established fortified brands. “Just over two years ago, we sold our first bottle of Lyre’s and today we’re selling a bottle every 30 seconds. With that pace, we’re on track to become the fastest independent beverage brand to reach unicorn status,” he added. Lyre has now reached 60 countries in terms of its global footprint, selling across multiple channels, including direct-to-customer via its website as well as in airlines, restaurants, bars and retailers including over a dozen of The World’s 50 Best Bars, Nobu Restaurants, and The Ritz-Carlton hotels. It is currently available in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, throughout Europe, and now the Middle East. ✤

READY TO RUMBLE Bahraini martial artist bags silver, making the country proud. Ali Monfaradi, a Bahraini martial artist, has won a silver medal at the sixth edition of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championship which took place in Bahrain from March 28 to 31. Overwhelmed by his win, he took to Instagram, writing: “Not what we planned for, but it is nonetheless an enormous honour to carry our flag this high. Thank you Bahrain for the opportunity, trust and support. Thank you to my family for bringing me this far and thank you everyone at@elementsjj.bh for making me into the athlete I am today.” The fighter, born in 1993, was inspired by his uncle Reza Monfaradi, who was himself a jiu-jitsu athlete, and used to watch him and other family members train. At 12 years of age, he joined one of the first jiu-jitsu classes for children in Bahrain, and so began his journey into the art. At the age of 17, just after finishing his high school exams, he skipped his graduation ceremony and flew to California to compete in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation 2011 World Championship, his first international tournament, where he earned a bronze medal in the blue belt division. After his impressive performance and win, he moved to Sao Paulo where he trained under the acclaimed martial artist Fabio Gurgel, a four-time world Jiu-Jitsu champion, at the Alliance Academy in Sao Paulo while pursuing further studies. He returned home to Bahrain in 2015 as a brown belt after almost five years in Brazil. In 2017 he became the 99th black belt promoted by Gurgel. 20

PAY IT FORWARD Experience the joy of giving with some of the many Ramadan initiatives from local charities taking place across the Kingdom.

T

he Holy Month is a time when things slow down across the island. It gives us time to tap out of the rat race and into life’s smaller details that can go unnoticed. While prayer and fasting are the major tenets of Ramadan, there are other paths that you can take to restore your body, mind and soul. On a personal level, you could invoke a lifestyle change by abstaining from certain foods or meditating and practising awareness. However, if you’re looking for something more communal, since Ramadan is a time when everyone gets together as one, serving people in local communities is a great way to connect, not just with those around you but your inner self too. Bahrain has many individuals and groups that organise charitable initiatives. FACT has spoken to some that are having programmes specifically for Ramadan.

A BOX OF GOODNESS Founded in 2016 by Miranthi ‘Miro’ Dole, a Sri Lankan Malay living in the Kingdom, A Box Of Goodness has touched and changed the lives of thousands through its many campaigns. You can participate in their annual Ramadan food drive by donating dry, non-perishable food items such as rice, dates, flour, lentils, green gram, chickpeas, oil, harees (porridge), sago, spices, pasta, noodles, sugar, milk powder, tea, coffee, ghee (clarified butter), coconut milk powder or canned foods. The items that you donate will be collected and distributed to both local and expat needy Muslim families and individuals fasting during the Holy Month. Drop off location for all food donations will be in Juffair and collections will run until April 20. Alternatively, you can drop items at the reception of Bahrain Rugby Club over in Saar, which is partnering with A Box Of Goodness. The group will also be collaborating with Lettuce Run, an all-female running group in Bahrain, to organise Run For Ramadan, a friendly run for ladies, which will be held on April 5. GO: Contact @aboxofgoodness on Instagram to donate and for more information.

AL SANABEL ORPHANS CARE SOCIETY Established in 1999, Al Sanabel Orphans Care Society takes care of needy orphans by providing them with educational, health and social care. It also ensures the children are able to adjust well psychologically and socially, within their families and the societies where they live, by facilitating their interactions with both. Typically, the families that this society supports include children with a single parent or an orphaned child living with his or her grandparents. The society accepts donations in cash and kind from both individuals and corporates and, for Ramadan, will be organising food and clothing drives that you can participate in. GO: Contact 3355 3535 to donate and visit alsanabel-bh.org for more information. 38

You can donate toward the care packages that will be distributed at this event. One Heart will also conduct a food event, Together We Eat, on April 21 at Thai Mart Mall in Diyar Al Muharraq, where you can sponsor meals for labourers and even dine with them as one big family all in a COVID- compliant environment. One Heart Bahrain is an unregistered charity and hence, can’t receive cash donations directly. Instead, they act as a mediator between sponsors and suppliers, and beneficiaries. THE 2022 MERCEDES-BENZ

AMG-GLE 53 4MATIC+ COUPÉ Mercedes looks to dominate the luxury SUV segment with the new AMG Coupé.

fact magazine

41

• ISLAND RIDES

M

ercedes-Benz recently launched the 2022 version of their coveted AMG-GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé. This sporty premium crossover is an offshoot of the brand’s second-generation GLE Coupé Series and offers a harmonious blend of sporty elegance and powerful performance. This month, thanks to Al Haddad Motors, the FACT magazine team were fortunate enough to experience this latest creation from the German automobile giant, an opportunity we took full advantage of. Athletic and Elegant Exterior There is no mistaking the AMG GLE-53 4Matic+ Coupé for other Mercedes offerings as the AMG-specific radiator grille clearly announces this classy coupé for what it is. The designers of this premium SUV have incorporated more style and elegance into its exterior design than most other car manufacturers could ever dream of. With its reduced length and extended wheelbase, the stance of this AMG is more robust than that of its predecessors. The selfassured attitude of the vehicle is openly displayed through many of its design elements. These include the pronounced power domes of the bonnet, the prominent ‘A-wing’ incorporated into the front apron, and the sporty outer air inlets, the latter two both sporting silver chrome trimmings. Mercedes’ three-point star emblem is proudly exhibited in a double ring at the centre of the grille, flanked by slim automatic Intelligent Multi-beam headlights that are now included as standard. The sloping roofline of the AMG GLE-53 4Matic+ Coupé is a defining characteristic of this dynamic looking coupé, a look complemented by AMG side skirts, augmented wheel arches and 21-inch light-alloy wheels with AMG lettering, all fitted as standard. At the shapely rear end, we took our time appreciating the freshly designed apron with its AMG-specific detailing. Sitting elegantly above the eye-catching diffuser is a slim strip of silver chrome that runs the width of the vehicle. This strip is underscored by the two round twin tailpipes of the special AMG performance exhaust system, also finished in high-gloss chrome. A spoiler lip on the boot, painted to match the body colour, adds to the sporty nature of this AMG, and finishes off the exterior in style. Luxurious and Functional Interior Once inside the AMG GLE-53 4Matic+ Coupe, our attention was drawn to the comfortable and supportive AMG Nappa Leather seats, as well as the novel colour highlights, including the contrasting red topstitching on the upholstery and optional red seatbelts. Wherever we laid our eyes, high-end materials stared back at us, assuring us of the exclusive nature of this vehicle. The ergonomic layout of the cockpit is exemplified by the latest generation, three-spoke AMG sport steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles. Add brushed stainless-steel sports pedals with rubber studs to the equation and we were left with an aching desire to get out onto the road. Space wise, the new AMG offers more than previous generations, with five occupants fitting comfortably into the vehicle. The combined capacity of internal storage spaces has been increased to 40 litres, whilst the boot space offers an additional 655-litre 42

fact magazine

capacity. This area can be increased up to 1,790 litres with the rear seats folded down, the most you will find in any vehicle in this segment. We found the panoramic sliding roof not only added greatly to the sense of space inside the AMG GLE-53 4Matic+ Coupé but assisted in lighting up the vehicle. Innovative Infotainment System The MBUX infotainment system is equipped as standard in the AMG GLE-53 4Matic+ Coupé and boasts numerous AMG-specific functions. When navigating this system, we were impressed by the clear graphics and found the setup to be responsive and user-friendly. The instrument cluster and touchscreen multimedia display are combined into a single unit and can be commanded via intelligent voice-operated control. This feature is a real taste of the future and is activated through the vocal prompt “Hey Mercedes”. The optional MBUX Interior Assist also enables intuitive operation of various functions through movement and gesture recognition. The instrument cluster provides access to the start-up menu and five selectable driving modes namely: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ (AMG exclusive) and Individual. Off-road-specific settings Trail and Sand (both AMG exclusive) are also available, ensuring this SUV can handle any terrain it encounters. Perhaps our favourite element of the internal configuration was the optional head-up display. The placement, brightness and clarity of this feature are perfect and we couldn’t think of another vehicle with a better setup.

Powerful Performance This 2022 AMG GLE-53 4Matic+ Coupé boasts a 3.0-litre, sixcylinder, in-line, petrol engine, the sound of which was music to our ears. This powerful motor enables the car to generate 435hp and 520Nm of torque. This coupled with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G nine-speed automatic transmission, enables the SUV to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and to achieve an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. Combine these capabilities with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, air suspension with stabilising electro-mechanical AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL, along with an ultra-responsive braking system, and you have one smooth and responsive ride. The inclusion of multiple safety and driver assistance features adds greatly to our unshakable confidence in this supreme machine. Our Verdict We spent many hours appreciating the splendour of this fourdoor luxury SUV, developing a particular fondness for the Sport+ mode with its agile throttle response. With all this SUV has to offer, the AMG-GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé represents what most premium SUV manufacturers strive for, yet very seldom manage to achieve. ✤

A GLOBAL PREMIERE Premium motor car maker, Maserati, introduces the Grecale, an SUV that is “The Everyday Exceptional”.

Grecale strikes the right balance between versatility, elegance, performance and innovation, guaranteeing performance, comfort and safety, all at the same time. These features are combined with off-road capabilities and uncompromising driving pleasure. Developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, the new SUV is produced at the Cassino plant. A wide range of engines is available: conventional internal combustion, hybrid and, in a year’s time, Grecale will also offer the first full-electric SUV in Maserati history. Three versions were rolled out at launch: GT, powered by a fourcylinder mild hybrid engine capable of delivering 300hp; Modena, with a four-cylinder, 330-hp mild hybrid engine; and the powerful Trofeo, equipped with a high-performance 3.0L, 530-hp petrol V6, based on the Nettuno engine fitted to the MC20. To complete the range, the Grecale Folgore, the 100%-electric version will offer 400V technology. The new SUV stands out in terms of spaciousness and comfort, boasting an impressive set of ‘best-in-class’ features, including interior space, driveability, handling, acceleration (0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds – on the Trofeo), top speed (285km/h – again on the Trofeo), sound quality and extensive use of fine materials such as wood, carbon fibre and leather. Its dimensions are a major factor: in the GT version, Grecale is 4,846mm long with a wheelbase of 2,901mm, a height of 1,670mm, a width of 2,163mm (including wing mirrors), with a rear wheel track of 1,948mm (and even greater in the Trofeo). The design embraces Maserati’s new visual symbol, which distinguishes every new model since the MC20. The front 46

features a low and imposing grille. The profile is notable for its contrast between purity and technique, with a highly fluid body featuring meandering, visual forms and its technical components highlighted by the use of carbon fibre. In the rear, the boomerang taillights are inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 GT and fit in with the trapezoidal line, made even more striking by the coupé effect of the cabin. In the cabin, the standout tech specs include the traditional Maserati clockface. Digital for the first time, it transforms into a veritable in-car concierge, courtesy of voice control. Everything becomes touch-based and the technology is controlled from the displays: the large 12.3” central screen, the largest ever seen in a Maserati, another 8.8” display for the extra controls and a third for the passengers in the rear seats. The in-car experience is managed from the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) Multimedia system, from the state-of-the-art infotainment and from Maserati Connect. Every journey is transformed into a unique adventure that combines dynamic comfort and an unforgettable driving experience, made possible by the extraordinary handling provided by the new, 100% Maserati Vehicle Dynamic Control Module (VDCM) system and the 360° control it offers over the car. The option of complete control translates into a clear distinction between the various drive modes: Comfort, Gt, Sport, Corsa (Trofeo only) and Off-Road. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.MASERATI.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

Despite the challenging market conditions that are affecting a lot of other auto manufacturers, our customers can rest assured that our MG distributors will have strong promotions on our MG line-up that will satisfy their needs and demands during this Holy Month of Ramadan.

“The new Ramadan offers also serve as testament to MG’s performance and strength, as the supply shortage issue continues to be a problem for many companies in the automotive market, leading to higher car prices and no discounts. “Ramadan is a special time of year that brings families together and where everyone enjoys the gift of giving, so it is our intention to help families enjoy both this year with a new car, plus some exciting and special gifts tailored to suit each market.” ✤ GO: CALL 1770 3703 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

5 OVER 5 •

Throughout your career, you have always worked in marketing. What first attracted you to this field? While some work in a field they don’t have a passion for, and duly rely on the opportunities available, I, for one, pursued what Is a mirror reflection of my character. I get bored easily, dislike routine, love creativity and, most importantly, am drawn to the feeling of success and achievement. Marketing provides me all of that and is not limited to an industry or brand but is so broad a horizon that it always offers new things to learn and is in constant advancement. Allow me to quote Henry Ford: “A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time.” Never underestimate the power marketing has to offer, this makes us powerful, we play a pivotal role in success, and can also soften a fall. What has been the most significant challenge you have faced? And how did you overcome this? Success doesn’t come easy; in many cases it comes after multiple failures. The failures we learn from and the challenges we overcome are what we should be defined by. Everyone has been through challenges that changed the course of their future, I am no different. The most significant challenge I could think of on a professional level is every time a new role and responsibility is taken. The remedy to such challenge is always hard work, dedication and commitment. My experience in the field and in the market makes it an easier challenge to overcome. Bin Hindi has many different divisions. Which part of the business is your favourite and why? Bin Hindi Group holds many divisions under its umbrella. To name

a few: Bin Hindi Motors (KIA), Bin Hindi Informatics (SAMSUNG), Bin Hindi Foods (Enab Beirut Restaurant), Bin Hindi Transport (SIXT car rental), and Bin Hindi Car Care (Enaya, Quickfix, EPCC). Having worked in the automotive field most of my career, I will always have a soft spot for cars. However, I am unable to favour a division over the other as each one of them has its own unique print, and having to lead the MARCOM division, they all provide an enriching experience. Can you tell us what a typical day looks like in your role? No day is similar to the other, that’s the beauty of leading an inhouse Marketing Solutions Division. A department consisting of graphic designers, for out-of-the-box creative artworks and concepts; social media executives for community management and social platforms management; the account management team to be the focal point between the client and the designer; the media and PR team for media relations and drafting of press releases; and the production team for collaborating with various suppliers – this is proof of the extensive responsibilities that fall on our plate. What do you like to do when you are not working? Being Chief Marketing Officer for a range of divisions certainly keeps the team and I on our toes constantly to make sure deadlines are adhered to. We are always on alert even during weekends as marketing never sleeps. However, a typical break would be spending some family time, and friends nights out. During alone time, I do spend a lot of time working on plans/strategies/ideas and ways to improve the business. ✤ fact magazine

A FEAST BY THE BAY Melissa Nazareth savours an authentic Ramadan experience at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s pop-up beachside restaurant.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

E

ven as I pulled into the property, I knew I was surrounded by world-class luxury like no other. Despite it being a busy evening, there was a certain calm aura that hung over the lobby – fitting for a hotel such as this. We were escorted to the pop-up restaurant by the beach where Four Seasons Bahrain Bay will host their Ramadan evenings, in addition to the main buffet set-up near the ballroom. The view of the island’s unending skyline is what we saw first, bright across the night sky. The weather was pleasant, to say the least, with a soft breeze blowing, offering the perfect setting for an al fresco dinner. We were greeted by Chef Tony El Khour, the hotel’s newly appointed Oriental speciality chef, who started us off with some appetisers paired with a variety of saj (bread cooked on a saj grill). Our cold mezze included staples such as hummus (chickpea dip), baba ghanouj (eggplant dip) and Warak Enab (stuffed vine leaves). We selected batata harra (spiced potatoes) and kibbeh (meat and bulgur wheat croquettes) for the hot mezze. Usually, kibbeh tends to get dry but this one had a crunchy crust and moist filling, offering a contrast of textures. The juicy, tangy vine leaves stole the show for me and had an authentic Lebanese flavour. I loved the batata harra, crisp on the outside and mushy on the inside. They were spicy – appealing to my Indian palate – although mild. It was my first time trying out Shanklish (aged Middle Eastern cheese bits with tomatoes, onions and parsley) and let me tell you that this one isn’t for the faint hearted. The fermented cheese has a strong flavour but, for someone like me who believes the stronger the odour of the cheese the tastier it is, this is a must-try. We were also served what we were told is called tagine but wasn’t tagine as we know it. It was a soft, solid mixture of sesame paste and a variety of nuts and dried fruit, shaped into patties and to be eaten with the flat bread.

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

We tried some fusion appetisers and some others with a twist. The mhammara (spicy dip made from walnuts, red bell peppers, pomegranate molasses and breadcrumbs) was served as balls instead of as a dip, which we found intriguing and were eager to try. It had a nutty flavour and was mildly sweet and tangy. While it tasted the same as the original, the texture is what made it interesting, which is why you must try it at least once. The fusion variation of hummus and pesto hummus was quite a hit with my taste buds. It cleverly blended the flavours of pesto – sweet basil, toasty pine nuts and cheese – with the earthy flavour of chickpeas. Another fusion dish was the fried mozzarella sticks coated with za'atar-infused breadcrumbs. We opted for mixed grills for our main course, including shish tawook and grilled meat and lamb chops. Perfectly seasoned, the meat was juicy and succulent and had a wonderfully smoky flavour. Many places serve lamb chops that are difficult to cut, but not the Four Seasons! The meat was pliable – easy to cut and eat. Four Seasons' Ramadan buffet will spoil you for choice with an extensive range of international dishes like sushi, Italian, Spanish paella, ceviche (raw fished cured with fresh citrus juices) and Indian street food. They will also have a Bahraini cooking station, featuring Ouzi (baked lamb and spiced rice), halwa (fish), machboos (spiced rice dish with meat) and others. Furthermore, you can enjoy 18 live cooking stations, featuring Arab and Lebanese specialities such as fattah (rice with meat, spices and aromatics), koshari (an Egyptian staple mixing rice, pasta and brown lentils, and topped with a zesty tomato sauce, garlic vinegar and garnished with chickpeas and crispy fried onions), manakeesh (flatbread with toppings – the pizza of the east!), falafel and shawarma to name a few. Our last course was dessert and we decided to take a bit of break first to enjoy the ambience. In the background, popular Arabic songs from the 90s kept us entertained. Kunafa is ubiquitous during Ramadan and no points for guessing that we chose that as our dessert of the evening. The vermicelli was crunchy as were the pistachio crumbs against the creamy vanilla ice cream layer, which took us by surprise. Traditionally, kunafa is layered with cheese or clotted cream. We also had baklava, another Ramadan staple, which was loaded with nuts. Those with a sweet tooth can choose from a range of options including maamoul (date filled cookie) and ice cream, as well as an extensive cake buffet and chocolate fountain. Having had a long day, this opulent Iftar feast by the bay was just what we needed and we can’t wait to go back for more. ✤ 64

DINING DELIGHT •

B

aharat is a common spice blend used in Middle Eastern cooking. A namesake of this regional ingredient, Baharat over at Le Meridien City Centre Bahrain, lives up to its name. We had a delectable experience trying out the Ramadan menu and tasted true Arab hospitality too. The Ramadan menu will be served as a buffet and, while most of the basic dishes will remain the same throughout the month, new main course items will be introduced from time to time, which means you can dine here more than once and still have a different experience each time. Further, Baharat will introduce live entertainment starting this year, offering an authentic, holistic Iftar and Ghabga experience. We were greeted with charming smiles as we walked into the restaurant. Dimly lit with exclusive dining sections, separated by beautifully carved wooden panels, this place is ideal for those looking to have an intimate family meal. There are tables in the open section too. The L-shaped floor plan gives you a view of the open counter while leaving ample space for the buffet section. We warmed our palates with some hot and cold mezze. Among the warm items, we tried the spinach and cheese spring rolls, vegetable samosas and lamb kibbeh (croquette made with meat, bulgur wheat and spices), and among the cold items, we tried hummus (chickpea dip), beetroot hummus and baba ghanouj (mashed eggplant dip). These were served with the traditional unleavened bread of the Middle East and grilled chicken fattoush (mixed greens and vegetables topped with crispy fried Arab flat bread) – a clever spin on the original vegetarian salad that appealed to us non-vegetarian diners. Soups included the good ol’ lentil. While we took the traditional route with the spring rolls, dipping them in the sweet and spicy chilli sauce, we didn’t hesitate to go slightly unconventional with our lamb kibbeh; it fact magazine

• DINING DELIGHT

tasted just right with the tzatziki sauce (yoghurt and cucumber) and refreshing too. While we waited for the main course, we washed this feast down with some traditional beverages such as Tamer Hindi (tamarind juice) and others. The main course was a lavish affair with an array of dishes featuring meat, fish, vegetables and rice all tightly put together to create a balance of aromas, flavours and textures. I have a weakness for one-pot rice dishes and raced toward the Lamb Majboos. The brown of the lamb sat perfectly against the yellow rice, making this dish visually appealing even before I could eat. Having taken on all the flavours of the lamb, the rice was further enhanced with whole spices and garnished with caramelised onions and coriander. At the same time, it wasn’t too overpowering and the lamb stood out as the star of the dish. Traditionally cooked until tender, the meat was falling off the bone, which is just what we wanted to see and the moment I took a bite it melted in my mouth. I followed the turf with some surf and tried the hammour next. I want to take a moment here to talk about the sauce. Tangy with hints of chilli pepper, it felt close to a curry but not quite. Coated in this special gravy with a certain je ne sais quoi, the dish is undoubtedly a seafood lover’s delight. The fish was cooked perfectly – flaky with crispy skin – and when I ate it, the flavours of the ocean happily mingled in my mouth with those of the sauce. I was getting fuller by the minute but had to try this next dish – the Chicken Tagine. Popular in Middle Eastern culture, the tagine is a family meal, traditionally stewed or slow-cooked in a ceramic or clay pot on the stove or inside the oven. I thought it had great visual appeal with its many colours – there was chicken 68

fact magazine

(obviously!), potatoes, black and green olives, black prunes and dried apricots that weren’t exactly arranged in any order but somehow looked like part of an organised chaos. I must admit I’m not someone who mixes sweet and savoury flavours and this dish did. Having said that, I’m glad I sampled it and recommend those looking for an authentic Middle Eastern experience to try it at least once. Some other items that we tucked into were the beef tikka (meat cooked in a tandoor), lamb chops and Warak Enab (vine leaves stuffed with rice and minced meat). The final lap was desserts with the show stopper being kunafa (vermicelli pastry soaked in sugar syrup). It’s a popular dessert during Ramadan (or all year round for those with a sweet-tooth!). We sunk our teeth into the crisp and creamy delight made using vermicelli pastry and crushed pistachio lined with rose water – the best ending we could ask for. There were other desserts too including a variety of baklava (filo pastry with nuts). I particularly enjoyed the lotus-flavoured variety.✤

WOK THE TOK Melissa Nazareth tries out the latest restaurant in Amwaj, serving Asian flavours at their finest.

NEW IN TOWN •

T

ucked away on the ground floor of Amwaj Cineplex, Wok Tok has been creating waves with food lovers across the island. I popped by for lunch on a Thursday afternoon, it was a weekday and diners started trickling in shortly afterwards. The restaurant is compact and naturally welllit with its French windows. Offering both chair- and booth-style seating, it was minimally designed with Asian inspired decorative pieces and elements. As we waited for our appetisers while sipping on our peach ice teas, I knew that we were in the right place. Our first appetiser was the Steamed Chicken Dumpling served with a soy sesame sauce. The casing of the dumpling was thin, offering a good bite and balance between filling and dough. The chicken filling was juicy and had a bit of an after-kick, which I enjoyed. For our second appetiser, I had to order the Prawn Money Bags. I’ve been wanting to taste them ever since I watched Gordon Ramsay try his hand at making them on one of his food trips to Thailand, only to be told by the head chef that his attempt was average at best. Known in Thai as Thung Thong, they are small, savoury parcels usually eaten during New Year to wish each other wealth. Served with a sweet chilli sauce, Wok Tok’s Prawn Money Bags had a crispy shell and meaty filling. The water chestnuts in the prawn filling added a slight texture and the delicate, authentic Thai spices made it a delightful little bite to share. Our main courses were a diverse selection of some of the restaurant’s bestselling dishes. The Orange Chicken was cooked perfectly, soft on the inside but crispy on the outside. The sauce had a citrusy flavour with just the right consistency to coat the chicken pieces well. If you enjoy a bit of sweetness, then give this one a try. We also ordered the Black Pepper Beef with Asparagus. It had a much stronger flavour, as needed to match up to the sturdy protein. The beef, cooked till tender, was accompanied by fact magazine

71

• NEW IN TOWN asparagus, onions and bell peppers, which offered a nice crunch and colour to the dish. It went well with our Quinoa Fried Rice, a favourite with diners here. Wok Tok also has lighter, healthier options made using fresh vegetables – lay off the carbs, we say! Our Udon Noodles tossed in Teriyaki sauce with broccoli and beef were thick and chewy, just as udon noodles are meant to be. Teriyaki being a sweetish sauce, this will surely appeal to diners who prefer a touch of sweetness in their food. The beef was crispy and the broccoli offered a hint of crunch, making this dish a balance of flavours and textures. The last of the main courses was the Eggplant Chilli Basil, another bestseller. Eggplants are tricky to cook and, as I’ve personally observed, severely misunderstood. But Wok Tok has taken this humble, bulbous, spongy fruit (yes, it’s a fruit! What?) and given it a star makeover. The eggplant was cut into bite-sized, vertical slices and fried with a crispy coating along with fresh basil and Thai (red) chillis and then tossed in oyster sauce. It beautifully took on the peppery, anise flavours of the fresh basil, the spice of the chilli and the intense soy flavours of the oyster sauce, making this dry dish a strong contender as an appetiser too. Our desserts were the Toffee Banana, which was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream as were the Apple Pie Spring Rolls. The Toffee Banana had the right amount of sweetness with a crispy fried exterior and mushy insides. It went perfectly well with the vanilla ice cream. The stuffing of the spring rolls was your regular pie filing – apples cooked down with sugar and cinnamon – making it tad sweeter than I’d have preferred. But eating it with the vanilla ice cream balanced it out. Wok Tok also has an executive menu with chicken, beef, prawn and vegetable options. They include a starter, rice or noodles and main course gravy, and come in good portion sizes – perfect to grab on the go during the week. ✤

This five-star luxury venue, located in the centre of Istanbul on the banks of the Bosphorus River, proved to be an unforgettable experience, one we could not wait to share with you, our readers. After a comfortable flight lasting just over four hours, we touched down in Turkey at Istanbul Airport. This meant a golf cart was waiting for us the moment we disembarked from the aeroplane. From there we were whisked through the airport, through passport control and on to collect our luggage. By the time we found ourselves sitting cosily in the Mercedes-Benz provided by the hotel, only eight minutes had passed since exiting the plane. A truly novel airport experience. The drive to the Swissôtel The Bosphorus gave us a sneak peek of the splendour awaiting us in Istanbul, the only city in the world to sit in two continents, both Europe and Asia. This breath-taking metropolis with its grand architecture, large assortment of mosques, vibrant colours, and rich history, all located on route, were enough to keep our eyes wide open in sheer wonder at all the adventure and splendour awaiting us in this great capital, once named Constantinople. I found the walk-in shower, complete with rainfall showerhead, to be a great feature, along with the attentive housekeeping service, offered twice daily, that ensured the room was always clean, tidy and fully stocked. A large work desk, complimentary Nespresso coffee and tea service, a 46-inch digital HD LED TV, premium internet and multiregional power sockets, all added to the comfort, convenience, and generous feel of this Swissôtel. The building itself offers various meeting spaces with capacities anywhere from five to 1,200 people. A ballroom, a luxurious holistic spa, a rooftop pool and no less than 65 acres of historical gardens. All this and so much more is available to guests of this beautiful hotel.

Spending time at the luxurious Pürovel Spa & Sport facilities, offered us a chance to work up a sweat, as well as to relax and unwind. Boasting a full range of luxurious, holistic treatments, this venue houses 15 treatment rooms, including 12 massage rooms and three hammam areas, a steam bath, sauna, Jacuzzi, Pilates’ studios, group fitness classes, indoor and outdoor pools, and ultramodern sports training facilities. We took full advantage of as many options as we could over our stay and left feeling calm and revitalised. Swissôtel The Bosphorus is also regarded as a cuisine hotspot and it’s easy to understand why. With several highend restaurants located under its roof, we were spoiled for choice as we were served healthy Peruvian, Turkish and Nikkei cuisines. Buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners, along with al fresco dining complete with scenic views, were all on offer and never disappointed. Both the food and the service were of an excellent standard and we must have gained a couple of kilos over our short stay. Yet another fantastic feature of Swissôtel The Bosphorus is its location in the heart of the city. The property is not only within walking distance of the affluent shopping district in Nisantasi, home to brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Kenzo, Prada and more, as well as several high-end malls, but it is also a great starting point to explore the vibrant city of Istanbul and all the wonders it holds. Over our four-day

TRAVEL •

stay we managed to take in Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, The Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, Eminonu Square, The Galata Tower and many others. Any one of these magnificent landmarks would have made the journey to Istanbul worthwhile. It was not easy saying goodbye to the amazing space we had experienced over our four extraordinary days in Istanbul. With VIP treatment to the airport and the same golf cart experience back to the plane, we spent our four-hour flight reminiscing on all we had experienced. We made a promise to return both to Istanbul as well as to Swissôtel The Bosphorus. Truly, an awe-inspiring experience. ✤

BIG SCREEN The House Need to Know:

The House is a 2022 stop animation movie, a dark adult comedy with horror elements. The film is divided into three parts where we follow different characters at distinct times in the same house. The animation is masterfully done, and the story is fascinating as we see how this mysterious house affects those associated with it.

Directors: Niki Lindroth Von Bahr, Paloma Baeza Cast: Mia Goth, Helena Bonham Carter, Jarvis Cocker, Susan Wokoma

The scenes in this sequence are bizarre and somewhat disturbing but extremely intriguing

The Adam Project Need to Know:

The Adam Project is a 2022 sci-fi adventure movie that follows a young kid as he meets his older self who is trying to fix mistakes that occur in the future. The movie is easygoing and perfect for some laughs.

Director: Shawn Levy Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldaña, Mark Ruffalo, Catherine Keener

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The House is an enjoyable movie from beginning to end. We start by following a human family of four. In this section, Mabel (Mia Goth), the eldest of the two daughters, is presented as the main character as we watch the sinister goings on of the house from her perspective. This part is the most horror-esque of all three, with creepy themes as well as a scarier soundtrack and lighting. The story then changes to a RATS developer (Jarvis Cocker), who is left unnamed, in more modern times as he attempts to fix the house and sell it. The scenes in this sequence are bizarre and somewhat disturbing but extremely intriguing. In the final part, we follow Rosa (Helena Bonham Carter), a cat landlord in an unknown future where everything surrounding the house has flooded. This segment is the least disturbing, both by the visuals and music. The stop-motion is incredible as the characters are filled with life, and so are their surroundings. The story is mysterious, with many things being left for the watcher to decide. We are not explicitly told why or how these things are happening. However, that’s what makes this movie so special, as the audience members are left to make their own interpretations of its greater message.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This movie follows a 12-year-old, Adam Reed (Walker Scobell) right after the tragic loss of his father (Mark Ruffalo). He finds himself struggling to find his place and keeps getting into fights at school and petty disputes with his mum (Jennifer Garner). However, one day he meets the older version of himself from 2050 (Ryan Reynolds) as his future self is trying to figure out what happened to his wife. As well as fixing the mistakes time travel has caused in the future. The movie is hilarious as Reynolds is able to bring in his classic charm and the interaction with the other characters seems heartfelt and real. It is also a pretty funny movie and ideal for those looking for a relaxing watch. The story is easy to follow, and the characters and storyline are intriguing enough. 80

HISTORICAL FICTION

The Language of Food By Annabel Abbs

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

Homesick By Sea Girls

The Jacket By Widowspeak

On first listen of the first track, Hometown, we were initially sold. After days of listening to mediocre new offerings, we were happy to find something we could actually recommend to you. How much of that is down to the very retro-ness (is that even a word?) of Sea Girls’ offering, we’re not sure but we were definitely listening with empathy, if not sympathy. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Henry Camamile, is a self-confessed exhibitionist when it comes to laying his feeling out front and centre. And there is something to be said for the teen/early 20s angst of songs that drag the listener, regardless of age, back to their youth – let’s face it, we’ve all dealt with the insecurities and disappointment of unsuccessful romantic encounters. The first move away from home is something no-one ever forgets – excitedly playing adult while inside feeling like a defenceless, momentarily abandoned, child. A feeling captured perfectly on Sick with it’s poignant lyric “I don’t want to grow up” and slick inclusion of 90s advertising slogans that immediately summon youthful memories and smiles from a generation Camamile is too young to be part of. Overall, the album seems to be an homage to youth with definite vocal influences from Brandon Flowers and even Julian Cope, in terms of attitude and delivery. Fave tracks from us are Sleeping With You (and mentally cheating) and Paracetamol Blues. Each is thoughtful and thoughtprovoking. However, there’s also loads of self-indulgence here that’s not overly attractive.

This is the sixth album release from the Brooklyn-based band and after 12 years of making music, it’s a joy to find that they still sound as fresh as ever. Vocals from Molly Hamilton offer a dreamlike quality throughout, you could almost float away on the delicate thoughtful sounds, but you really do need to listen to the lyrics too, to discover that all is not as it seems. At times you could be forgiven for thinking you’d tuned into something from The Peasant, the 2016 album from Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions. And indeed, on Unwind Molly’s voice takes on a less whimsical quality, deeper and with a welcome rich timbre which, together with the Gangsters Paradise-style opening, makes this track a favourite. Other standouts include Salt and True Blue. Neither is currently easily accessed in this part of the world, so we had to do a bit of digging. Bit, it was definitely worth it. The, now familiar, twinkling score draws deep from that oh-so wistful voice telling stories of love, loss and memory. Sad words entwined with happy sounds which make the sentiments even more melancholy. Our absolute favourite track is Slow Dance, a very pretty love song – again with lyrics that hint at what lies beneath. Though the messages are sometimes hidden, Widowspeak have succeeded in delivering another cerebral masterpiece that sounds just like easy listening.

Eliza Acton, based on the real cookery-book master, is an aspiring poet hoping to publish her book of poems but is bluntly rejected by her publisher. Told that “poetry is not the business of a lady”, she is asked to write a cookbook instead. Faced with the sudden bankruptcy of her father’s business and their flight from their home, she considers the publisher’s proposal. Not knowing the ABC of cooking, she hires the young Ann Kirby, the impoverished daughter of a father crippled by war and a mother suffering with dementia, who dreams of becoming a cook. Together they develop an unusual friendship and partnership as they attempt to interweave the art of poetry with the craft of cookery, breaking the mould of conventional cookbooks and revolutionising cookery writing.

• MATTER OF FACT

What We’re (Still) Talking About Off With Their Heads

NFT or NFC (No Flippin’ Clue)

Not Just For… Peacetime

Britain’s Prince William and the everdelightful and perfectly dressed Kate have been tootling around the Caribbean recently as part of a tour to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. All, of course, should have been sweetness and light with red carpets and welcoming arms… but, and there’s a big but, somebody at The Palace seems to have gone a bit tone deaf. It’s almost as if royal staffers and the UK Foreign Office have been living under a rock and have totally missed the increasing dissent and an air of protest in the region where, earlier this year,

Non-Fungible Tokens. Simple right? They allow artists to sell their works, without actually giving the works away – we think. At least that was our understanding. But it seems things are not that straightforward. Radio Bahrain recently announced the launch of its own NFT, at the NFT MENA Exhibit 2022, and it was very well received by local and international artists and musicians. So far, so good and we can just about stretch our somewhat fuddled brains around how NFTs can benefit the arts world – though it’s still confusing. But then heard big fashion brands, such as Dolce & Gabbana and Adidas, are

There’s no doubt the war in Ukraine is hideous and shouldn’t be happening. The daily images of death and destruction are heart rending. But, for all the dismal human suffering, it has also brought out the very best in human nature. Not only are many countries welcoming refugees with open arms in a seldom seen in recent years. But what has also been demonstrated is the true humanity of so many Ukrainians, not just those who have bravely stayed to defend their homeland but also those who have headed to the borders taking their pets with them.

Barbados dropped the Queen as Head of State and became a republic and Jamaica looks like following suit. Of course, with immense grace under pressure, the young couple have put a brave face on it but, it’s hard to believe heads won’t be rolling and questions won’t be asked about how they ended up in this ridiculous situation in the first place – the first tour of the Jubilee year to a region that clearly didn’t want them.

producing clothing for the virtual world which can be sold as NFTs – in effect like selling a painting or any other valuable item in the real world. But, wait a minute, how can you sell something that doesn’t actually exist? It’s the same question we asked when Tommy Hilfiger announced that it was designing clothes for avatars, some items at great cost. Is it just us being really old-fashioned, or is this a bit like The Emperor’s New Clothes?

There are some who might argue that “it’s just a dog” or “just a cat” but for these people, who have already lost so very much, their pets are part of the family and they would never leave a family member behind. We wish the same could be said of the expats in our part of the world who frequently acquire animals while they are here but have no intention of taking them when the time comes to move on.

cities and brands. In several destinations I have worked, I had the pleasure of welcoming high-profile delegations such as His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa as well as several presidents and CEO’s of top international companies. At the same time, I have worked on several corporate social responsibility projects, with amazing talents in our industry at all ages. I cannot pick one single memory – the hospitality industry is so dynamic and colorful. None of the days in my career have I had a regular office day; none were the same. One of my nice experiences was to sell an outside catering event abroad and to travel from Istanbul with 17 chefs to cater to a royal wedding. I assisted the culinary team and designed the Turkish Delight plates for a full afternoon. As long as you are passionate, hardworking and don’t lose your sense of humour then every single day is worth remembering.

You are part of the transition team as Al Areen Palace will be rebranded, can you tell our readers what to expect?
