Summer Daze

The summer night is like a perfection of thought.” - Wallace Stevens

M

aking a summer playlist is one of life’s simple highlights for me. Picking out the songs that are essentially going to be the anthems that you make new memories to whilst having fun in the sun, this is the most exciting part of getting ready for summer travel, visits home, lazy pool days with friends and leisurely gatherings. But, in Abu Dhabi, summer can also mean other things like trying to survive the scorching heat, running from one A/C spot to another and, most of all, choosing to do things that will stop you from melting in the sun. Not to mention the burning hot steering wheel and sauna-like car conditions. Fear not. As usual, the FACT team is on-hand to bring you the only Summer Survival guide you need for 2018. We’ve packed it with the city’s top brunches, lunches, dinners, spa offers and more so you know exactly where to go to beat the heat with your loved ones. Turn to p23 and start jotting down all your favourite spots to check out over the next few months. Highly recommended is one of the many fabulous staycays where there’s plenty to while away the sluggish summer days. Talking of staycations, if you’re not jetting away for a quick summer escape, then you might want to check out our recommendations for home-away-from-home hotels that will make you feel like you went on a mini holiday. This month we shine the spotlight on the boutique wonder of Manzil Downtown (p49) and the city hospitality at Grand Millennium Al Wahda (p42) - where will you choose? If you pick up FACT’s monthly issue for a fashion, beauty and interior’s fix, you’ll be happy to see that the summer survival edition has more for your wardrobe and makeup/grooming kits. To top this off, our tech pages have something for everyone to envy and we took the motoring beast, the brand new Jaguar E-PACE out for a spin in City Rides (p61). I think this summer I’m going old-school. It’s time for a throwback playlist of all the 90’s and early 00’s - and there’s too many good tunes waiting to be turned up! Wishing you all a bright and beautiful season ahead (and happy survival). Until next month, keep calm and get your summer on. ☺

NEWEST PAGE TURNER As the citizens of Abu Dhabi count down to the eagerly anticipated reopening of their muchloved Cultural Foundation, The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) shared details of one of its exciting projects - the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library, a space in the heart of the city specially designed for and catering to children. GREAT THOUGHT AND PLANNING HAS GONE into the development of the new Children’s Library, and in March 2019 a vibrant and creative space dedicated to dynamic and interactive education for children of all ages will open its doors, within the newly restored and reopened Cultural Foundation on the grounds of the historic Qasr Al Hosn site. With an immersive philosophy to literature and learning that will set the library apart from more conventional institutions, the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library will be a true pioneering first of its kind in the GCC Region. HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman, Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said: “We are extremely excited to be creating a new and vibrant space in Abu Dhabi that will impact the lives of children and their families. The Abu Dhabi Children’s Library will provide creative opportunities for digital engagement and emphasise the importance of the library as a rich and welcoming space for children within the local community. It will also allow us to support the development of Arabic literacy and creative programmes that will enrich and enhance learning outside the classroom.” Spread over three floors, the 5,250sqm facility has been divided into several age-appropriate, immersive social spaces. Drawing inspiration from pop-up books, the library will boast three-dimensional learn/play spaces in which children can physically immerse themselves, becoming part 12

of a story. An open, friendly and inviting space, featuring whimsical, colourful designs inspired by the nature of Abu Dhabi, including a ‘Book Mountain’ at its centre, the library is sure to delight and inspire children from across the region. Each floor will have a different design concept that has been inspired by the rich and diverse landscapes of the UAE. The first floor will transport visitors to the desert while embracing themes of tranquility, peace and meditation. Children will be invited to read on sand dunes, climb onto camels or huddle into four-wheel drives. It will create an environment for excitement and learning as they become a part of their own story and interact in a setting shaped to bring creative minds together. The second floor will feature an oasis landscape with a falaj water channel flowing with books, offering children a diverse space within which to broaden their minds – be it exploring with friends, or spending time alone with a book. The collection will house a large and diverse range of books, including fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, autobiographies and audio-books. Children will be encouraged to talk, perform, play and interact with one another in collaborative, open spaces. Multiple quiet zones for concentrated reading have been designed throughout the library, delivering more meditative spaces for concentration. DON’T SWEAT IT HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN BE DOING TO KEEP COOL IN THE SCORCHING SUN...

WHAT TO EAT IN THE HEAT?

POPSICLE PARTY Though you might be tempted, stop yourself from reaching for that super-cold tub of ice cream in the freezer. A healthy and more delicious alternative is fruit popsicles – they’re just as cooling and contain half the calories.

TWO EASY & YUMMY POPSICLE RECIPES

Virgin Piña Colada Pops (Serves 8) Ingredients: 1/2 large pineapple, chopped (about 4 cups), One 15-ounce can cream of coconut Three tablespoons fresh lime juice, Pinch fine salt Method: Puree the pineapple, cream of coconut, lime juice, and salt in a blender until smooth. - Pour the mixture into 10 3-ounce or eight 4-ounce ice-pop molds, dividing evenly. Insert ice-pop sticks and freeze until firm, at least four hours and up to four days.

Fruit with Yogurt – As fruit has high water content, it will help maintain your body fluid, by making you sweat – this is the body’s method for cooling down in the heat. Yogurts contain friendly bacteria which can help protect against food poisoning – something that is more of a frequent occurrence in hot temperatures. Rice, Baked Potato & Pasta Salad – Eat regular, small, starch carbohydrate snacks or enjoy a weekend roast with ample potatoes or a pasta dinner, and how about a yummy risotto? Why? Well, carb-rich foods keep the body’s blood sugar and energy levels even, helping to combat heat exhaustion. Onions – Really? Especially red ones! Red onions contain a chemical called quercetin which is believed to have an antihistamine effect. So for those people who suffer from irritants like heat rash or bad reactions to insect bites and stings, eating onions daily could be the answer to these summer complaints. Eat Spicy Food – A vindaloo in the summer might sound crazy, but chillies and spicy curries can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, all of which cools the body down. Eat Small, Eat Often – The larger the meal, the more metabolic heat your body creates breaking down the food. Eat small portions but eat regularly!

HOT TIPS FOR COOLING DOWN ◆ Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every

couple of hours. A main vein passes through this area, and it helps cool the blood. ◆ Wear lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothes. Light colours reflect the sun’s radiation and heat is trapped by synthetic fibres, but cotton absorbs perspiration and its evaporation causes you to feel cooler. ◆ Replace your usual body moisturiser with a cooling aloe vera aftersun product to use morning and night. This will help lower your skin temperature. ◆ While you’re out, keep the house blinds or curtains drawn to stop it heating up like a greenhouse. ✤

Banana Nutella Fudgesicles (Serves 10) Ingredients: Six large overripe bananas, peeled 1/2 cup nutella Method: Blend the overripe bananas until completely pureed. - Add nutella, and blend until completely mixed in. - Pour into popsicle molds with sticks and freeze for three to four hours. fact magazine

ALLDAY LIVE! JULY 26 – 28 EMIRATES PALACE Imagine a traditional cinema back in the day. One cinema showing one movie. Or a traditional theatre, one theatre putting on one show. Nowadays we have the multiplex screens with hundreds of films to chose from – so why not multiple theatres with multiple shows in one place. And it doesn’t stop there. You can buy one ticket to watch one movie in a cinema but just imagine if you could buy one ticket for the same price that gave you access to watch all the movies showing on all screens – that’s what ALLDAY Live is about. There are no tickets for individual shows, the festival is essentially all you can watch and enjoy. There is one entry ticket, but once you enter the venue you can attend all the shows without additional cost. There’s a Chillout Zone with a wide variety of food and drinks from tasty local food outlets. All the shows presented at the All Day Live! festival are brand new family-focussed production. This year’s performances will also include Fireflies Shadow Theatre and the Hollywood Special Effects Show. Tickets start from AED145.

UNITE WITH TOMORROWLAND! JULY 28 DU FORUM This summer, 400,000 people from all over the world will gather in eager anticipation of the double edition of Tomorrowland, and more than 100,000 ‘People of Tomorrow’ in seven countries will

get the chance to experience the magic in a truly unique way. Abu Dhabi will be connected to celebrations in Belgium, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan. An all-star DJ line-up will be connected to all seven countries via live satellite feed. ‘UNITE With Tomorrowland’ is much more than a live stream event, because among other things a stage that appeals to the imagination, enchanting decorations and special effects ensure an extraordinary experience. Technically, the festival is also a masterpiece, because thanks to the satellite connection, the show will run completely synchronized at all locations. Everything during these seven events revolves around the escape from reality, partly thanks to the spectacular Tomorrowland Main Stage, and the connection between the People of Tomorrow across the continents. Tickets start from AED495.

SPARKLES OF INDIA AUGUST 16 – 18 Sparkles of India is a three-day event celebrating Indian Independence Day. The festival will create a traditional Indian environment with colourful art and decorations. DREAMING YOU SELDOM FIND A HOTEL THAT MANAGES TO BALANCE CITY LIVING WITH RESORT-STYLE FACILITIES, BUT WE MAY JUST HAVE FOUND THE PLACE. ENTER THE GRAND MILLENNIUM AL WAHDA, A PROPERTY THAT HAS BECOME THE BEATING HEART OF CITY LIFE IN ABU DHABI…

W

hen asking for hotel ideas in Abu Dhabi, the chances are that someone will utter the four words: Grand Millennium Al Wahda, to you. If not a personal suggestion, you can bet that travel websites will have this hotel listed somewhere near the top of its recommendation list. And though it may not present itself as the first choice for staycation weekends, we’re here to tell you why checking into the Grand Millennium Al Wahda would be a wise choice this summer. Firstly, be prepared for the most friendly welcome as the staff, from the bellboy to the front office, the lobby lounge waiters and housekeeping, all cast a lasting first impression within just a few hours of checking in. We experienced warm smiles and a real can-do approach, something that could have been easily lost considering that the hotel was having a busy week with guests visiting on holiday, for business and to dine at the restaurants. We didn’t have to wait around, except we’d highly recommend calling down 10 minutes beforehand if you’ve valeted your car. During busy periods, this service can get a little congested (as expected) so giving the guys downstairs a little heads up to bring your vehicle around is a small gesture that will help avoid waiting time and/or disappointment on both sides. SEND ME YOUR LOCATION The 5-star property is located in the heart of Al Wahda, with a direct connection to one of the city’s top shopping destinations – Al Wahda Mall. Both business and leisure travellers can easily access meeting points as well as the capital’s best tourist hotspots including the beautiful white sandy beaches of Saadiyat Island, the iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi, the majestic Emirates Palace and the cultural wonder that is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, amongst others. Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre is only a short drive away, making conference and event attendance a smooth ride. What we loved most about the Grand Millennium Al Wahda’s location is the bustling vibes in its surroundings. Step out of the hotel and you have the choice of hopping in a taxi and in mere minutes getting to the corniche, or setting off to explore the hustle of the centre on foot.

Here’s where the REAL life of locals and expats showcases a first-hand cultural experience for any visitor. MEET ME AT THE HOTEL ROOM The Grand Millennium Al Wahda boasts 830 rooms, suites and apartments, alongside a spa and fitness club and an array of restaurants and bars. We check into the Superior King Room – a practical and cosy option for those looking to balance home comforts with affordability. There’s enough space and plenty of luxurious touches to reflect the high standards of hospitality and comfort associated with the UAE. With a choice of double or twin beds, each room has a seating area where you can relax and admire the city views (and it’s ALL about the views from this hotel, trust us). A dedicated working area makes this space ideal for business travellers or casual email catch-ups. We especially liked the well-designed bathroom which came with beautiful amenities and one of the best showers we’ve experienced in a hotel – after a day out in the city, a nice hot shower can make all the difference! Of course, there’s all your usual elements like tea and coffee making facilities, an in-room safe, hairdryer, and all the basics you would expect from a 5-star hotel. In terms of room types, there’s an option for every purpose and group of travel; couples, solo, business and culture trips, and even families (who will LOVE the property’s huge, well-equipped apartments). DINING FOR DAYS If there’s one thing you can be sure of during your stay at the Grand Millennium Al Wahda, it’s that you won’t go hungry! From casual British pub grub and a lively atmosphere at Porters English Pub to starry nights and Arabic fare at the instagram-ready Sky Lounge Thirty One, and authentic Korean cuisine at Prime Okryu, amongst others, you’ll be sure to get your fill of world foods during your stay. A standout for us is the newly renovated Sky Lounge Thirty One which not only offers incredible, mouthwatering dishes alongside hubbly bubbly and a welcoming atmosphere, it also displays some of the best views of the capital – it will be hard to put your phone down when dining here. fact magazine

FIRST, WE NEED A SPA DAY Possibly the most (pleasantly) surprising part of our stay was a visit to Zayna Spa which feels like it could easily be a part of a beach resort somewhere far out of the city. The second you step into the tranquil spa, it’s silence. The dim lit corridors are lined with large lanterns and plants that bring a peaceful vibe indoors. You’ll hardly believe that this sanctuary is right in the heart of the city! We opt for a full body massage with the goal to simply loosen up and relax. The therapist is professional and friendly, offering up great advice on casual exercises and essential oils that can help to soothe muscle tension on a daily basis. Within minutes of the treatment starting, we’ve hit full-on snooze. By the time we awake and head to the relaxation area for hot tea, it’s like a weight has been lifted off the shoulders and we’re ready to tackle the noise outside. Highly recommended! The Grand Millennium Al Wahda might not be the usual choice of accommodation for a summer staycation but it’s one-of-a-kind facilities, variety of room options, prominent location and all-round good service are just a few of the reasons why you should dedicate a weekend of respite to this 5-star property – after all, it has the soul of Abu Dhabi city instilled in it from the moment you walk in through the doors – and what’s better than that? ✤

UPTOWN DOWNTOWN FACT DISCOVERED CONTEMPORARY ARABESQUE BOUTIQUE HOTEL, MANZIL DOWNTOWN, AS THE TRUE HEART OF DUBAI WHICH ULTIMATELY LEFT OUR HEART’S BREAKING AT CHECK-OUT. DON’T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME... fact magazine

T

he Downtown area of Dubai with its bustling tourist trails taking in the delights of the Burj Khalifa, the transfixing display of the dancing fountains, sophistication of the Opera District scene and the array of luxury products on offer at Dubai Mall is also home to one of the most unique lodgings in the fast-paced Emirate. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT Manzil Downtown is confident and charismatic. It blends tradition with crisp clean lines and contemporary styling. Upon arrival I had to take a moment to muse whether the beautifully crafted soaring cylinders of glass were a lighting feature or indeed a piece of modern sculpture. I settled on a bit of both! In addition, starburst style chandeliers make the lobby area very memorable and a space in which guests want to linger as opposed to pass through. When selecting your room you will be torn between gazing at the elegant Burj Khalifa or perhaps overlooking the inviting St Tropez-style pool area. Unlike many hotels in and around Downtown, views seemed equally impressive in all directions. When Stella McCartney mused “Everyone can do simple things to make a difference and every little bit really does count” she could have easily been referring to Manzil Downtown. Each tiny element has been carefully styled and thought through to enhance guest experiences. ATTENTION TO DETAIL My key card embellished with a charming selection of Arabic phrases and handy greetings delighted me. Had I been a first time visitor to the UAE then I dare say the effect would have been even greater. So, smiling down at my key card, I headed off to my room passing further Arabic wall etchings as I glided through the hotel. Despite the property firmly saluting Arabic tradition and culture, much of Manzil, particularly the rooms, will remind you of an array of art deco spaces. Flawlessly white walls, grey and black accents and furnishings complementing enviably pristine bed linen really set the rooms apart. The accommodation is both functional and homely, high-spec yet not clinical. Businessmen, couples and families will find themselves equally at home here. I gazed down at the pool area with its curtained, candystriped loungers and felt an overwhelming sense of both relaxation and contentment. ALL ABOUT THE FOOD Dining, refuelling and recharging are tantamount at the hotel. The most exquisite space has to be the sumptuous Courtyard with Shisha Lounge and the best of Mediterranean morsels to tempt you. Reservations are a must as this touch of tranquillity amidst the heart

of a metropolis is much sought after. The expansive tiled area is furnished with inviting wicker chairs which ergonomically hug the contours of the patrons. You may wish to sit within the vast Ottoman-esque arches draped in scarlet velveteen. Whichever it is, ensure you are seen in THE place to be seen at in Downtown Dubai! I both breakfasted and dined in the evening in Boulevard Kitchen. It was once said that ‘All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast’ which must certainly make Boulevard the font of all happiness! The selection of fresh produce and freshly made dishes left me in awe. Warm, crusty, artisanal breads nestled alongside sweet pastries and brioche, whilst traditional dishes such as cheese or zaatar saj were replenished readily.

In addition, the ‘egg menu’ allows guests to create bespoke dishes such as poached eggs with smashed avocado on freshly baked bread. Certainly a mouthful to devour not just to explain these mouthwatering delights. What a way to start your day! By night, Boulevard seems to be transformed by subtle lighting which draws your gaze upwards to the incredible industrial-inspired panelling and huge colourful canvasses. Boulevard is impeccably presented with stylists blending tradition, nostalgia and Arabia with art deco, cosmopolitan, and western nuances. Once again, the brilliance lay in the detail at Boulevard. Quirky grocery store bags brimming with fresh bread were delivered to the table whilst luscious, seared steak sat in a resplendent fashion in the centre of a large black platter surrounded with an exquisite elixir and tiny roasted tomatoes, ready to explode in the mouth. I feared for Boulevard as I ventured down to dinner – how could it possibly surpass breakfast? I need not have worried! HEART OF HOSPITALITY Perhaps the most striking thing is that I felt a strong sense of identity within Manzil Downtown. All too often modernity strips hotels and resorts of any sense of whereabouts or locale and as you look around you could literally be anywhere in the world. Not so at the Manzil Downtown. When visiting Dubai you will enjoy the best of Arabic tradition and hospitality whilst admiring the stylish contemporary décor and cutting-edge service. There will be no doubt where you are and where you will return many times. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder and we’re about ready for another Manzil staycay! ✤

T

he provenance and history of the Shangri-La group is particularly apt when taking in the splendorous setting on your drive from the airport to the Resort. The mythical place described by James Hilton in his novel Lost Horizon inspired Robert Kuok to name his ’new’ hotel after it. The vast rock formations, outcrops and chards which surround the resort are breathtaking and certainly have an element of the mythical, if not magical , about them. A great deal of thought and time has been taken when choosing a setting in which to create this resort. My experience did not begin as I approached the resort but rather days earlier when I received my personalised itinerary. It not only whet my appetite for my stay but made me feel that my individual needs were being addressed and that each element was bespoke and thoughtfully arranged. The lobby area is an absolute triumph of both architecture and taste. It perfectly combines vastness and luxury and was reminiscent of the serene open spaces found within Grand Mosques all over the Middle East. Much of the ‘need to know’ information had already been dispensed through my itinerary prior to arrival so I was able to gaze , in awe, as I was shown around the resort discovering a succession of beautiful spaces, courtyards and vistas. Shangri La Al Husn is Oman’s only private , adult resort and has recently been refined in order to ensure that guests can indulge in all aspects of the finest of Omani hospitality. The views from the infinity pool and the private Mahhara Beach would rival those of Santorini at sunset. The sense of seclusion and tranquillity which the setting imparts is second to none. The phrase ‘breakfast at your leisure’ illustrates the overriding philosophy of the Al Husn resort which is to induce a sense of relaxation and revitalisation. The Sultanah restaurant plays host to breakfast each morning. A riot of colour, flavour and choice greeted us. The vast platters and service stations afford guests the opportunity to eat as healthily or indulgently as their mood desires. The décor is inspired by the rock and water outside and is a fusion of colour and light which exudes freshness. Throughout my travels and gastronomic experiences I would struggle to place another resort’s ‘iftar’ above it. To coin a phrase I had certainly breakfasted like a king or rather Sultan though I doubted that dinner would be that of a pauper! During the course of the day the Mahhara Beach Bar and Al Muheet terrace bar entice guests with a selection of salads, sandwiches and freshly caught flame grilled seafood. Tropical drinks alongside an impressive selection of libations are also served throughout the day overlooking the Bay of Jissah. At 16.00 Afternoon Tea is served on the terrace outside the Sultanah Restaurant. The finest of silverware holds delicate pastries and

sandwiches and guests are able to choose from a selection of teas skilfully infused by your hosts. As early evening was now upon us we happened upon the Courtyard area where all manner of aperitifs were being served. The enclosed courtyard with elegant water features and archways which frame snippets of the views over the Gulf of Oman was intimate and alluring. Each finely tuned dining experience and assemblage at the resort really showcases both the location and the quality of the facilities without feeling staged.

And so we turned to the teller of tales of 1001 nights, Shahrazad, for dinner. I was immediately taken with the illusion of stars in the night sky above me which was created with thousands of tiny LED lights. The lighting cast shadows upon the highly polished marble floors and traditional lanterns, kettles and shishas create a sense of Moroccan magnificence. In addition to traditional Moroccan tagines, meat and seafood dishes the restaurant also presents diners with the finest Lebanese grills and Omani specialities. Most would consider taste to be the sense most used when sitting down to dinner however, scientists increasingly believe that sight is vastly more important and the setting in which food is enjoyed can itself actually enhance the flavour. Clearly those behind this restaurant concept had heard about this. Shahrazad’s intricate styling and menu choices will delight and satiate diners whilst exhibiting the flawless standards which permeate every area at the Shangri La. So many second days staying in beautiful hotels begin with first day breakfasts - but not here. Each day saw us embarking on a new route to ‘flavourtown’ with incredible dishes along the way. I could find no fault with preparation, quality, variety or service. Stunning. A fitting precursor for our spa experience. Hareer (meaning silk in Arabic) is the first L’Occitane Spa in Oman and was designed to deliver a Mediterranean experience. The natural tones and shades of lavender are evocative of the colours of Provence where oil infusions were first sold in local markets in the late 1970s and the iconic brand L’Occitane was founded. The oils and treatments combine phyto-therapy and aromatherapy in a luxurious and authentic way. At the time we were the first couple to enjoy the Omani Honey Heaven Treatment together. L’Occitane worked with Hareer Spa to create a bespoke product which is built around the properties of Omani honey. The softening scrub smoothed and soothed the skin and prepared us for the deep relaxing massage with oils further infused with Omani honey. The treatment was a journey of wellbeing leading to a sense of contentment and pure relaxation. The resort is also able to offer guests full use of neighbouring ShangriLa resorts where you may choose to dine or partake of water sports, additional spa facilities and a vast beach. The plat de resistance at the neighbouring Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa resort is the opportunity to experience their Turtle Care Project. Hawksbill and Green Turtles have made the beach close to Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa resort their nesting ground. Resident full time Turtle Warden Mohammed Al Hasani ensures the safety of the nesting turtles and runs a full time education programme which guests can access. The first turtle release this year was on Sunday 15th April and we were fortunate enough to witness one of the most awe inspiring sights imaginable - the emergence of said baby turtles. When considering how best to precis the highlights of my visit I hit a brick wall. At no point during my stay did one drink or meal or host surpass the rest. Everything was an unequivocal standard of excellence. Perhaps the best way is to mention the feeling of abject disappointment we felt as we grudgingly packed our cases and resigned ourselves to the fact that we must leave. As we bid farewell to the soaring escarpments and rugged coastline we thought of James Hilton’s mythical ‘Shangri La’ and agreed that he would be tipping his hat in approval. The Shangri-La Al Husn Resort & Spa, Muscat is one of those secrets you simply have to share, as it is too good not to be enjoyed by all. ✤ 58

MODERN LUXURY:

THE NEW JAGUAR E-PACE

fact magazine

61

• CITY RIDES

It might only be a cub in the SUV club but this Jaguar is still ready to lead the pack as FACT finds out in our latest test drive...

T

he Jaguar story is not a new one, but rather an evolving journey. Once upon a time, Jaguar made only classic luxury saloons and the odd coupe and convertible aimed at wellheeled older drivers. But, it’s 2018 and the manufacturer wants to be seen as a brand that keeps up with the Joneses – and, rightly so. It’s been less than two years since Jaguar launched its first SUV, the outstanding F-Pace, and now it returns in the booming mid-size premium SUV segment with its smaller – and very impressive – E-PACE. The Jaguar E-PACE is a five-seat, compact SUV that packs the design and performance of a Jaguar sports car into a spacious, practical and connected all-wheel-drive vehicle. If you love the look of a slick, sporty machine but you’re looking for sensible and reliable features and performance, this is the car for you. Trademark Jaguar driving dynamics and design put the brand’s sports car DNA in a neatly packed segment with advanced technologies to keep you connected. The exterior design is inspired by the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car and characterised by the distinctive Jaguar grille, muscular proportions, short overhangs and powerful haunches that give the E-PACE a bold and purposeful stance, instantly communicating dynamic agility. Jaguar’s nod to its sports car genes is also evident in the fast sweep of the roofline and the distinctive side window graphic. The E-PACE is also packing under the hood. It’s available with a powerful 300PS Ingenium petrol turbo engine powering the sporting SUV from 0-100km/h in just 6.4 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 243km/h. Call it a baby crossover now. We dare you. This machine is ready to roll with the big boys. Configurable Dynamics gives the driver even more control with individual settings for the throttle, automatic transmission, steering, and, where fitted, the Adaptive Dynamics suspension system. Adaptive Dynamics senses driver input, body and wheel movements and pre-emptively loads the suspension and chassis and adjusts the damping for improved roll control and agility in all conditions. E-PACE’s Active Driveline all-wheel-drive system is a technological first for Jaguar. The intelligent set-up combines phenomenal traction with Jaguar’s unmistakable rearwheel-drive character. The system’s torque-biasing capability 62

fact magazine

delivers optimal stability, dynamics and fuel efficiency in all conditions and all weathers. On the UAE roads, this is a Godsend as driving environments can really vary throughout the year. The strong chassis also allows owners to tow up to 1,800kg (braked), ideal for customers who use their E-PACE for both business and pleasure. It seems that, so far, the E-PACE ticks all the boxes. But, does Jaguar’s smallest SUV have the potential to steal buyers from both small and mid-size prestige SUVs from the established brands? We’re talking everything from Audi’s Q2, Q3 and Q5, to the Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLC, BMW’s X1, X2 and X3, the Volvo XC40 and XC60 and even top-end versions of the Volkswagen Tiguan and top-selling Mazda CX-5. The appeal of the Jaguar E-PACE comes not only from straddling the small and medium luxury SUV segments – two of the biggest and fastest growing market sectors in the Middle East, but also for its seductive design, superior performance, competitive pricing and dynamic handling. Take another feature which is the very first for Jaguar; the company’s next-generation Head-Up Display technology. The advanced display can project up to 66 per cent more information onto the windscreen using large, full-colour graphics with enhanced clarity. Essential information including vehicle speed and navigation directions are in full view at all times, with alerts and updates for the infotainment, safety and convenience features all projected directly into the driver’s eyeline – reducing the need to look away from the road – and we all know just how important that is in this country, where driving can be a daunting task. Talking of staying alert, the E-PACE features the very latest safety and driver assistance technologies. A stereo camera which supports Lane Keep Assist and also combines with the electric power assisted steering system and rear radars to deliver a Blind Spot Assist function, to help reduce the risk of sideswipe collisions on multi-lane roads. A new Forward Traffic Detection system also warns drivers of approaching vehicles at junctions where visibility is restricted.

Advanced active safety features include a pedestrian airbag, which deploys from beneath the trailing edge of the bonnet in the event of a collision. Was this car MADE for the UAE, or what? When you’re cruising between the Emirates or taking on the enormous roundabouts, tackling the traffic or even just driving to and from work, be rest assured that the E-PACE has got your back. Let’s take it inside. The E-PACE has exceptional interior space for its class. The compact SUV can seat five in absolute comfort with generous rear legroom. The large luggage space is made possible by the vehicle’s sophisticated Integral Link rear suspension architecture and can fit a pushchair, a set of golf clubs and a large suitcase. An optional 12.3-inch full colour digital instrument panel and choice of two premium audio systems developed with Meridian put the E-PACE on a par with vehicles from the class above when it comes to interior technology. In terms of digital connectivity – this car has it all and then some. The Jaguar E-PACE is connected and intelligent. The 10-inch touchscreen comes as standard and connects customers to their favourite apps, including Spotify. Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl system allows you to keep the vehicle secure by tracking it on your smartphone, automatically alerts the emergency services in case of an accident and allows you to check fuel levels and mileage remotely via a smartphone or smartwatch. Customers can warm up the car, cool it down and even start it remotely using InControl. Pretty cool! Digital connectivity can be found throughout the cabin, ready for every need of the modern family. There are up to four 12-volt charging points and five USB connections as well as a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to, not one, not two, not even three, but EIGHT devices. We couldn’t fault the Jaguar E-PACE. It doesn’t discriminate. This is the baby crossover that can make any woman feel sleek and in control and give any man a powerful on-road experience. Made for every day cruising, business trips, leisure weekends away, and, more importantly, getting around in style and safety, there is something about the Jaguar E-PACE that besotted us from the moment we tapped the keys to unlock the doors, until the second we handed them back. Now, it’s your turn to be mesmerised. ✤

R

yuichi Sakamoto remains to this day one of the people who sparks a myriad of ideas in everything Kenzo does. Starting off as one third of pioneering electro group, ‘yellow magic orchestra’ and then a solo composer, activist and dancer, over the course of his career, he has epitomised progress and reform, enlightenment and enrichment. Sayoko Yamaguchi, one of the world’s original supermodels, was one of Kenzo Takada’s muses. Her originality lay in her capacity to offer chameleonlike qualities to endless inspirations. Upon looking through the many images in the house’s archives of her and Kenzo, the brand’s creative team was inspired by her transformative character. For both collections, Kenzo aims to capture the duality of the two figures. It looks to the era when they both ruled on two distant continents; to Ryuichi’s personal flair when questioning the norm, and to Sayoko’s ability to mix patterns, prints, silhouettes, and colours. For the women’s collection, Kenzo worked with clashing stripes and florals. Paisley skirts meet racing tees. Ruffled dresses in crepe appear with floral jacquard coats. Men’s tailored elements contrast with boldly-feminine metallic silks or memory satin in dusty pinks. Reversible raincoats offer the option of a classic trench or high gloss. Trouser shapes are the meeting of ski pants and bikers. Baby blue, vivid yellow and fuchsia transparent organzas are worn over graphic skirts and tops. Women’s accessories pack a floral punch with especially conceived flower appliqués on belts, chokers and materially mélanged sandals. The new ‘gyoza’ tote with a ball clasp fastening makes its debut in vivid neon, stripes or patent leather. The men’s collection’s style is reminiscent of Ryuichi’s individualism. A collage of British tailoring and Japanese baseball, shapes are strong shouldered and high-waisted. 50’s baseball trousers are matched with graphic album cover tees. Prints exclusively supplied by Ryuichi Sakamoto himself are worn alongside paisley and striped trousers and tops. Men’s trench belts are worn affixed to trousers or extra-long. The micro gym bags come in a leather nylon mix. Flat soled boots or sandals complement the cropped finish trousers. ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh DINNER AT LI JIANG SANS YOUR PHONE How many of us are guilty of dining with our heads inside our phones rather than immersing in the dinner experience itself and conversing with our companions? With the digital frenzy world we live in and the ‘if it’s not on the ‘gram, did it actually happen’ itch - phones have been a real third wheel for me and my husband on our dinner dates lately so we were excited to go and try something that encourages more one-on-one time and less ‘doing it for the ‘gram pressure’ – the Wednesday No Mobile Dinner Challenge at Li Jiang in The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. Li Jiang means ‘beautiful river’ in Chinese and this is an award-winning South East Asian restaurant that anyone who loves good dim sum will be familiar with. Every Wednesday, Li Jiang (and a few other dining outlets in the hotel) host their No Mobile Dinner Challenge. How does it work? You willingly lock away your phone for the duration of your meal in a glass box, and then you earn 15% savings on your bill – genius! Of course, challenge accepted! The restaurant’s corners are immaculately adorned with details that make you want to stop and take a closer look. From the intricate details of the handmade wooden doors, to the collection of glass cups gathered together as chandeliers, the giant spice wall displaying an assortment of spices such as chili, cinnamon, and cardamom, onto the open kitchen with the chefs live in action. As we settle in with our menus in hand, we eagerly give the waitress our phones to be locked in a glass box - the challenge begins! I peek at the menu, which boasts an array of dim sum options ranging from chicken, prawn, scallop and veggie. We opt for an assortment of dumplings and a dish of wasabi jumbo prawns slathered in avocado and mango salsa for our starters. For mains, we went for the wagyu short ribs, green curry prawns and seafood noodles. The hubby and I shared all the dishes as they came in generous portions so we got to taste a bit of everything from each other and here is what to expect – refined, oriental, authentic food boasting unbelievable flavours of Asia. Dishes are made from scratch and served fresh. Your taste buds will go on a culinary journey with every bite and the lush setting sets you in the mood to enjoy the company of your dinner companion, making the no phone challenge a breeze. The sweet ending of our evening was a lemongrass crème brûlée and a stamp of approval for the overall experience. Next time around I will use my phone though as the place is definitely Instagram-worthy – guilty as charged! Yours fashionably, Amal 80

SÌ, PLEASE The Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas is already starting to make waves (see what we did there) with a slew of exciting new dining options that include the picturesque Turtle Bay Bar and Grill, the capital’s first true gastropub, Hamilton’s, and Saadiyat Island’s first specialist Italian restaurant - Si Ristorante Italiano & Bar. FACT’s David Tapley went to get his Italian fix… fact magazine

83

• NEW IN TOWN

T

he old adage “go big or go home” immediately springs to mind as we step into the cavernous Si Ristorante Italiano & Bar on a buzzing Monday evening. Presenting a semi-rustic look, Si evokes the feeling of a traditional Italian trattoria with its simple wooden tables and tiled floor. Anchored around a central pizza oven, the dining room has the capacity for 150 covers (there’s also an ample outside terrace) with tables well-spaced allowing for a sense of intimacy, especially if you’re lucky enough to procure one of the raised booths. Aside from the impressive wood-fire oven which rotates the pizzas as they cook, Si features a separate bar (ideal for a pre or post dinner drink), open show-kitchen, an appealing Mozzarella Bar (where trestles of sun-kissed tomatoes and earthy mushrooms offer just as much appeal as the cheese) and a pork room - scheduled to open during the summer. Wooden pizza paddles complete the dining environment, with children actively encouraged to sit at the pizza counter to watch the flaring of the dough and the preparation of toppings. With so much going on in the restaurant, the menu is more simplistic with its choice of Italian home-style cooking that will be familiar to those accustomed to Rotana’s other Italian favourites - Prego’s and Rosso’s. Forgoing the fine dining setting which the majority of Abu Dhabi restaurants are currently following when it comes to Italian cuisine, Si sensibly keeps things simple with a casual and family-friendly approach via simplistic dishes with honest ingredients as the primary focus. Our meal begins as all Italian meals should, with a rustic loaf of bread accompanied by a delightful olive tapenade, olive oil and chunks of Parmesan cheese. The bread is essential for mopping up the beautiful juices from our starter of oven-roasted messy prawns, presenting three plumb crustaceans in a buttery sauce complemented with chilli and garlic. We continue the seafood theme with two glorious tentacles of char-grilled octopus, perfectly cooked to provide a tender texture and charred flavour. Yet it’s a potato salad featuring sweet peppers and capers, and a robust citrus aioli that really work to bring the plate together. Intrigued by the boards of cured meats and cheeses which are a Si speciality, we gleefully tuck into the signature mozzarella tasting. Presenting three variations of mozzarella, the cow’s milk has been flown in from Italy before being processed right here in the UAE. The trio is very good; with the smoked buffalo mozzarella being of particular note for its subtle smoke infusion, though the creamy stracciatella burrata is our standout choice. Unable to eat Italian without at least one slice of pizza, we found the thin and crispy hand-stretched base of the bresaola e rucola to be one of our favourites in the city. Topped with air-cured beef, an abundance of tomato, and plenty of Parmesan cheese the construction of this particular pizza allows for each individual ingredient to shine through. With close to fifteen pasta options on the menu, we’re drawn to the house speciality of calamarata pasta with Canadian lobster and scallops. Rings of wonderfully al-dente pasta prepared in a 84

fact magazine

rich tomato sauce with lobster broth, plus pan seared lobster and scallops. It’s pleasing to see the seafood is generously dispersed throughout the pasta in a strong dish which works to further enhance the rustic concept of Si. While the braised lamb shank doesn’t quite reach the same highs as the pasta course, the tender nature of the meat cannot be denied. Enhanced with a winning combination of orange and olives and accompanied by a hearty mashed potato that works wonderfully with the sauce, we would’ve appreciated a touch more seasoning and flavour to the meat itself. Desserts stick firmly with the traditional and it would appear our search for a great tiramisu in Abu Dhabi might finally be over. The typically Italian dessert which layers mascarpone with coffee soaked biscuits is given the required oomph via the optional addition of Kahlua. A dense Italian doughnut also comes recommended as do the mini cannoli stuffed with ricotta, maraschino cherries and chocolate. As expected from the dependable Rotana brand, service at Si is friendly and the team are well versed in both the food and beverage offerings. We’re saying “Si” to this new Italian opening on Saadiyat Island! For not only does it work as a showcase for Italian classics executed to the highest of standards but also for the Saadiyat Rotana as a dining destination in itself. We’ll “Si” you there. ✤

INNOVATIVE Lebanese Cuisine Li Beirut has long been recognised as one of the most popular Lebanese restaurants in the capital, having garnered an impressive collection of accolades and a loyal following since inception. FACT’s David Tapley went to see if the award-winning dining joint still lives up to its high quality reputation… fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

W

hat sets Li Beirut apart this particular restaurant apart from the slew of Middle Eastern eateries in the city is Li Beirut’s fearlessness. For the cuisine is unafraid to be different, taking the traditional food of the Levant and adding a unique modern twist. Situated in a prime location overlooking the pool and beach, the dining room at Li Beirut is dark and seductive, presenting a sense of old world charm. Clad in dark wood, the walls are adorned with black and white images of Lebanese landmarks, accentuated via bursts of vibrant red from the leather upholstery. While wooden screens provide pockets of privacy there are also a number of private dining rooms, plus a pleasing lounge. Diners at Li Beirut are likely to be astounded by the exquisite plating and the juxtaposition of flavours and textures which is wholly unexpected. Li Beirut’s ‘chef’s signature menu’ in particular takes a refreshing approach in modernising such a beloved cuisine and these were the dishes that piqued our interest most during our recent dining experience. Begging with freshly baked breads puffed up like pillows and served with olive oil, sesame and za’atar, we’re immediately reminded of the generosity of the Levantine table, a place where families and friends gather to share food and stories. The Chef’s signature menu encompasses a variety of interesting choices including Bastirma (dried beef, hargir leaves and labneh) and a foie gras kebbeh (complete with walnut chutney, almond purée, and lemon foam), though we find ourselves unequivocally drawn to the kunafa wrapped tiger prawns. A trio of succulent shellfish, shells replaced by kunafa pastry and laid upon a tahini sauce that brings an interesting contrast in textures. Pan seared diver scallops served with crab harra and a za’atar mash subtly bring Middle Eastern ingredients to the plate as a means to enhance the delicate flavors provided by the large scallops without overpowering. Likewise, the yellow fin tuna plated alongside Atlantic lobster, tomato salsa and a quenelle of smoky baba ganoush is the perfect complement of flavours, accentuated via artistic plating that’s completely unexpected considering the rustic origins of the cuisine. Main courses of za’atar crusted lamb and succulent grills are hard to beat with the chargrilled tiger prawns of particular note. Beautifully seasoned and presenting an unexpected spicy kick, the charred flavour taken on by the prawns represent a real showcase for the art of barbequing. Similarly, the tender lamb is another well executed dish,

served with a rich jus, sweet parsnip purée, shaved truffle, and a vegetable selection (including what could possibly be contenders for the best roast potatoes in the UAE). For those in search of the more traditional dishes upon which Li Beirut has built its reputation, the hot and cold mezze, succulent grills and a choice of four set menus are all worthy choices, though we’d strongly encourage you to try at least one or two of the chef’s signatures. When it comes to desserts the tantalising choice includes honey fudge, saffron caramel flan, Umm Ali, and a lighter than expected pistachio creme brulee. A dish which successfully manages to dial back both the prominence of the pistachio and the level of sweetness. Its refreshing, considering the overpowering usage of key ingredients like rose, orange blossom, cardamom and pistachio, so often associated with the cuisine. The signature Arabic coffee chocolate globe is a dish likely to draw attention in a busy dining room (not to mention the Instagram worthy theatrics). A white chocolate sphere is slowly melted by a warm chocolate and coffee sauce to reveal macerated berries and the surprise of popping candy. The complementing flavours of strawberries and chocolate are often used in conjunction with one another, but at Li Beirut the idea is elevated into something truly mesmerizing, albeit a dessert that even two people will struggle to finish. Li Beirut’s strengths lie in the ability to stand out from the crowd. Carefully balancing traditionalism and a modern approach to Lebanese food, it’s pleasing to see Jumeriah at Etihad Towers’ F&B team taking a different approach. From the fine dining setting with its neat grey and white striped napkins and dazzling silver Bernardaud crockery to the progressive presentation of the food. The traditional may be what Li Beirut have staked their reputation on, but it’s the chef’s signatures that are likely to become the talking point for this particular restaurant. Keeping regular guests and food aficionados coming back for more. ✤

ROLL LIKE SUSHI The Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi is a property that defies expectations. As a brand constrained by connotations surrounding its mid-range status, the F&B team at this specific location are doing an admirable job of transforming peoples perceptions of the brand. • BRUNCH FOCUS

L

ocated just off the lobby, the hotel’s Japanese restaurant SushiSan has garnered a reputation for affordable sushi in the capital and while it would be unfair to compare the offering to heavy-hitters like Zuma and 99 Sushi, what diners are getting is very good indeed. SushiSan is a relatively small space with capacity for just 55 diners and as first time visitors, we’re impressed by the modern look and feel of a restaurant anchored around a central interactive sushi counter with intimacy found in a handful of red leather booths. Our visit coincides with the restaurant’s new Thursday Fusion Brunch which kicks off at 6.30pm - a much appreciated early start - ideal for a post-work drink and a welcome opportunity to kick-start the weekend. The fusion element derives from the fact that (despite the restaurant’s name) this is more than just a sushi brunch. Guests can expect spring rolls, dim sum, ramen soup and a selection of Asian salads presented on small floating buffet tables and presided over by a large mural of a geisha. With visual appeal and the draw of Instagram becoming key marketing tools, it’s pleasing to see the SushiSan team has considered the presentation of the buffet with salads displayed amongst a ‘garden’ and the inclusion of a quirky and ultimately very tasty sushi burger. All sushi is ordered to the table using familiar check-box forms and the selection encompasses eight varieties of maki, plus a number of sashimi options which are made to order before being presented upon sleek black slates. We’re assured that the Mucho Bonito (spicy tuna, avocado tempura flakes and ponzu) and the Salmon Fantasy (salmon, avocado, cream cheese and wasabi) are the most popular choices but we find ourselves more enamoured with the Dynamite Roll with its crisp tempura shrimp and tobiko which pops in the mouth. This idea of fusion doesn’t just come from the amalgamation of various Asian specialties but also the sushi itself! While sushi purists may balk at the likes of a beetroot maki roll, it’s a flavour combination that really works. Traditionalism aside, this particular maki has the potential to become an Instagram favourite due to its deep pink colouration making for a distinct visual appeal. Sashimi comes from an interactive sushi counter where you can witness the chefs slicing the fish — salmon, tuna, octopus and tomago (Japanese omelette). Yet it’s the ability to customise that’s key to this particular brunch and the team is more than happy to assist with bespoke sushi creations for those with specific dietary requirements. This marks a refreshing change from the rigidity of many establishments in the city and an example of the customer experience being placed front and centre. In keeping with the fusion concept the desserts may not represent traditional Japanese delicacies and instead take typical brunch favourites and transform them with a SushiSan twist. The utilization of popular Asian flavors is appreciated, though the Pandan creme brulee didn’t quite work for us. We think we’ll stick with the obligatory chocolate fountain.

BRUNCH FOCUS •

Drinks maintain a strong emphasis on quality, with two sake based cocktails available alongside Japanese hops and vinos. Yet it’s the smoky moonshine that had us enraptured. With SushiSan being one of a handful of venues showcasing this spirit in the capital. The moonshine comes smoked in a glass bottle and packs quite the punch and with a variety of flavours on offer, we’d suggest you try the passion fruit one. Service is friendly and efficient with a special mention to the bar team who put in a lot of hard work in ensuring a strong guest experience. Heightened by a restaurant that actually has atmosphere, thanks to a DJ with a penchant for picking quality party tunes that instill SushiSan with a relaxed and playful vibe, albeit at an acceptable sound level which will not stifle conversation. The Fusion Brunch replaces SushiSan’s Friday concept and the move into a Thursday night slot appears to have benefited the space. Positioning the restaurant against less competition, while maintaining a reputation as an affordable Japanese restaurant and one of the best value-for-money brunches in the capital. ✤

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR Angela Beitz saves her skin with an oxygen treatment at Atarmia Spa…

T

he constant battle to achieve flawless skin is no easy feat, especially in the harsh summer months when skin seems to want to constantly misbehave. I too a trip to Atarmia Spa at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas for an Oxygen facial that is designed to help breathe life into your skin. The facial works as a pick me up to refresh lacklustre skin and I’ve got high hopes! Oxygen is being used more and more in facial treatments and it’s truly amazing what a quick blast of it can do for your complexion. I love this spa as it has a resort feel; they’ve managed to create a space which is luxurious yet understated and it’s run by super professional staff. Décor is beige and white with touches of brown and green mosaics and it’s simply stunning. I sip on the welcoming green tea and fill out a consultation form that will help my therapist to know the skin’s needs. I change into a robe and slippers and am ushered into the serene treatment room. We start with a relaxing foot bath with a mint and eucalyptus scrub to slough away dead skin cells and then it’s time for the facial. The Oxygen Facial which is personalised to suit my dry and tired skin, using products which feel fresh and hydrating. My face is triple-cleansed using a very rich creamy cleanser and then we move onto microdermabrasion. The therapist uses a very gentle setting as my skin in very fine and sensitive. Microdermabrasion works to remove all the dead skin cells from your skin along with removing all the nasties that clog your pores and it works especially well here as the environment really dries skin out and congested skin is also a big concern. The therapist then performs some extractions to make sure all pores are clean and gives me an uplifting facial massage before applying a thick hydrating mask. To complete the treatment, the oxygen machine is used on the face and neck to plump up the skin. The facial has worked wonders for my skin; it’s bright and glowing. This is the perfect treatment should your skin need a real boost or if you have an important event that requires a fresh, glowing complexion. This place is definitely worth visiting, the facilities are also top notch with a relaxing whirlpool and heated beds. Once I finish the facial, I sit in the relaxation room and sip another green tea with healthy cookies. Yum! ✤

It carries the potential to make painful extractions a thing of the past which is great for those with sensitive skin. The best thing too is that it doesn’t make skin red or irritated and doesn’t leave marks that extractions can. Sugar Beauty Lounge use Hungarian Organic brand, Eminence Organic (also very popular with celebrities). Our skin is double cleansed and then assessed. The machine is used (it works as a vacuuming action to exfoliate dead skin cells and rid the skin of excess oil). A glycolic and salicylic acid is deposited onto the skin through the tip, the pore opening is widened, allowing the vacuum suction to dislodge and suck up nastiness from deep inside. Unlike with some manual extractions, strong pressure isn’t used, making the whole process a lot more gentle and completely pain-free. Our face is then massaged with a serum and the final step was a beautiful, cold hydrating mask that was applied over our entire face including eyes and mouth while our hands and arms are massaged. The mask plumped our skin beautifully and the whole experience left our complexion, bright, glowing and hydrated.
