▪ School-Santuary El Hogar de Luci is a pioneering project in our country that deals with the most oppressed and forgotten animals,

animal victims of exploitation industries, many of them are rescued ill or with serious physical and psychological consequences. They, who do not fit elsewhere, find here a home to recover and live out their lives in peace and freedom.

El Hogar is a sanctuary because offers its residents a safe

environment where each one is treated according to its specific needs and has the opportunity to develop as individual according to its own nature, personality and interest.

El Hogar is a ‘school’ that educates children and adults alike,

in the respect for all kind of animals, regardless of species and promotes a lifestyle consistent with these values, veganism, which consists of simply removing products or services derived from animal exploitation from our consumer choices.

From EL Hogar de Luci we fight against arbitrary discrimination

of individuals based on its species (“speciesism”) because beyond our differences, all animals share the ability to sense and the desire to live, and deserve, therefore, equal respect and recognition of our individual rights.

There is a place in the world that shows that another reality is

possible, an oasis for justice and respect for all animals, a heaven of peace and harmony in which the hearts of all species can beat freely. This special place is El Hogar, and here we present our project:

We carry a new world in our hearts

3

1. Ideas ▪ A) SPACE - Create a space free of speciesism, within the boundaries of which no products of animal origin are consumed or publicised. - Maintain proper facilities on the basis of the needs and interests of each individual and according to their personal characteristic.

▪ B) ACTIONS - Develop educational projects focused on children and adults to eradicate the lack of knowledge of other species. - Create educational and awareness material. - Rescue animals victims from situations of exploitation, violence or abandonment, offering them the possibility of a dignified and enjoyable life.

▪ C) OBJECTIVES - Maintain a place safe from speciesism, that is, where discrimination according to species doesn’t exist and all animals are equally respected and considered as unique, one-off individuals with their own personality and interests. - Give a home and provide a long and full life to as many animals as possible - Promote a life free of animal exploitation.

2. Objectives ▪

The idea of creating a School-Sanctuary is the result of many years of experience in the rescue and rehabilitation of animals from situations of exploitation, violence or abandonment. The only efficient and final solution to avoid abuse and death of many animals is making society aware of the need to establish a fairer and more respectful relationship with animals. With this aim, we built this place where all have the opportunity to know and learn about those animals that we can’t usually see in cities because they stay held inside industrial production facilities of meat, eggs and dairy, through publicity offer an image far away from reality to avoid the feeling of empathy and so to preserve its business.

For that, from El Hogar de Luci we made this union possible, for with the direct contact with other animals, humans have the option to choose our lifestyle with knowledge on our side.

international@elhogardeluci.org | (+0034)686.956.784 | CIF: G85197168

Objectives

Besides this educative labour, EL Hogar fulfills the essential function of shelter for those animals that haven’t a place in conventional protective associations for the animals called pets, which are the only ones taken care of in rehousing and rehabilitation when they appear abandoned or in risky situations.

Nowadays and due to the economic crisis that our country is suffering, small livestock exploitation facilities (birds, pigs, rabbits, sheep and cow farms) aren't profitable anymore compared to the huge multinational companies of the sector, and consequently, lots of these businesses are ceasing their activity with the consquential slaughter of millions of innocent individuals that end up in the slaughterhouse because there isn't any entity to provide for their rescue and housing.

▪ Therefore, one of our main goals, whilst we have the available means is that

the School-Sanctuary takes care of these animals making an humanitarian service providing them with a humanitarian service and a practical solution for society.

We carry a new world in our hearts

7

Objectives

â–Ş Another worrying situation that we can solve with this project is the numerous

sightings of big animals like pigs, donkeys, sheep, who are wandering along our roads with the risk this brings for them and their road safety. In all these cases, no Civil Guard or Nature Protection Services, nor town councils, police or even the council collection centres, have been able to give us effective and humanitarian solutions to pick up and accommodate these 'other' abandoned animals.

â–Ş For all of this, based on our ideals and the rising demand of a multispecies

centre to solve so many dropouts, we have decided to undertake this beautiful and much-needed project.

3. What is a sanctuary? â–Ş

A Sanctuary is a place where animals can live the rest of their lives in complete freedom and safe from any kind of exploitation. In some cases, the own structure of the sanctuary, can serve also as a temporary shelter for determined animals until they are adopted by a responsible family.

â–Ş In the sanctuary all the activities are made by and for the animals, without

looking for any kind of benefits for humans, because between humans and non-human animals an equal relationship is stabilised and based on respect. Thereby, any sanctuary seeks to provide its residents with the optimum quality of life, which often stops an excessive number of animals from entering, in order to safeguard the minimum conditions needed for the welfare of the ones who are in as much as the ones who are yet to come.

international@elhogardeluci.org | (+0034)686.956.784 | CIF: G85197168

What is a sanctuary?

▪ En sanctuaries, animals aren't confined in cages or as they are in animal

shelters. In cases that separating animals is needed for their own safety, specific parks will be enabled, adapting them to the characteristics and needs of each group.

▪ Animal sanctuaries aren't only dedicated to the care and rescue animals,

they also do important awareness work, because animal exploitation will not finish until human animals learn to respect the rest of the animals of other species.

In contrast with ZOOS, sanctuaries promote contact and interaction between human and non human animals from respect and equality. For this reason, lots of sanctuaries do not have public access and if they have it is because they know that visits will not disturb the peace and routine of the animals who live there.

We carry a new world in our hearts

11

What is a sanctuary?

▪ In these visits, entry should not be charged. The visitor can make a donation,

voluntarily, which will go to finance the project, not serving, in any case, for the personal gain of people who manage it.

In sanctuaries, including El Hogar de Luci, veganism is promoted as a lifestyle with respect for animals which consists of feeding oneself a 100% vegetarian diet and rejecting the use of animals for any other purpose, such as experimentation, clothing or entertainment.

▪ In brief, the goal of these centres, is to change the way that humans think about non human animals and how they treat them.

A diversity of national and international agencies have been formed to assume the responsibility of supervising the different models not-for-profit sanctuaries and establish the basis of a general system of reference to this kind of centers. An example of one of these agencies is the American Sanctuary Association.

4. EL HOGAR project EL HOGAR will be a school to make the population and the media aware of the idea that it is possible to lead a sustainable life while keeping a set of principles based on the respect towards all sentient beings. El Hogar will be a sanctuary for those animals that, because of their species, physical or psychological characteristics, will have their only chance of survival there. LOCATION

▪ Our facilities will be on an estate situated in the Community of Madrid. The

ownership of the land is essential to avoid the risk of being evicted when a tenure expires. We’ll seek a rental with an option to buy so we can guarantee a future for the inhabitants of the sanctuary and ensure the gradual payment of the total transaction.

▪ We have looked at a plot of land extending 72,000m², located 30km from

the city of Guadalajara and 6km from the Sacedon swamps. It has good farming land and plenty of water. It does not have slopes and has big planes ideal for herbivores. The woods consist of oaks and aspens.

▪ We will plant fruit trees so they provide us with shadow and food. The land has a water well but no electricity. We’ll study a solar energy project.

7. Forestry of the plot ▪ The plot does not need much forestry since it already has all kinds of trees

such as black poplars, oaks and some pine trees. We actually want to grow some aromatic plants and bushes to repel mosquitoes or to grow some medicinal plants such as lavender, rosemary or santonine, which are local plants and they can withstand extreme temperatures in winter and summer.

▪ Around the Sanctuary-school, we would like to plant a line of cypresses. ▪ A vegetable garden for our own elf-sufficiency. ▪ In the future, we would like to grow alfalfa and grainsaccording to the seasons to be used for the animals consumption in our sanctuary-school.

9. Annex and bibliography ▪

All sentient beings share a number of qualities which make us individual and unique. Just like us, all the animals are able to feel emotions and to experience sensations such as pleasure, pain, fear, sadness, happiness...

We base our philosophy on the ethical theory of sensocentrism, which, as a counterpoint to anthropocentrism, defends that all beings with a capacity to feel must be subjected to the protection of laws and must be respected as such.

▪ Specism is a term coined in 1970 by a psychologist called Richard R. Dyer, who

used it to describe the existence of a moral discrimination based on the differences of animal species, in analogy to racism or sexism for humans, which are based upon differences that are morally irrelevant. Specist discrimination presumes that the interests of a sentient being are less important where this being belongs to a certain animal species. This discrimination is very rooted at the core of all cultures, with the exception of Jainism. The most common representation of specism is the moral anthropocentrism. That is to say, the underestimation of the interests of those who do not belong to the animal species known as Homo sapiens.

http://masalladelaespecie.wordpress.com/2010/02/22/la-consideracion-moral-de-losanimales-no-humanos-un-esquema-de-la-argumentacion-implicada/ http://masalladelaespecie.wordpress.com/2009/07/02/el-cuestionamiento-delantropocentrismo/

▪ There is a general consensus in the scientific community due to the proven fact

that in many investigations, non-human animals show a conscience of their own.

https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://fcmconference.org/img/CambridgeDeclar ationOnConsciousness.pdf&pli=1 http://news.discovery.com/animals/animals-consciousness-mammals-birdsoctopus-120824.html

▪ Many studies confirm that the mistreating and abuse of animals is an alarm sign

to detect other cases of violence. In the words of PhD Nuria Querol y Viñas “In other countries pets are allowed to be admitted into shelters for the homeless of for women who have been victims of domestic violence. To underestimate the connection human-animal connection is a bad method.”
