illanova Theatre presents Orlando directed by Whiting and Barrymore Award winner James Ijames. Orlando runs September 24 - October 6. Audiences will join the spirited, freethinking nobleman, Orlando on “an epic adventure that transcends time, place and gender” (New York Times). After awakening from a seven-day slumber, Orlando finds himself transformed into a woman and must navigate society, artistry and desire from an entirely new perspective. This fantastical, gender-bending, period-hopping parable explores what it means to live in our own skin and in our own time. Sarah Ruhl’s fantastical adaptation transforms Woolf’s already captivating novel into an entertaining, poetic and ensemble-driven night at the theatre. Using Woolf’s 1928 novel as inspiration for a modern look at identity, gender and desire, Ruhl explores the multitude of possibilities contained within every human being. This timely, textured play examines the ways in which gender and identity have been rediscovered, challenged and transformed over the last decade. As Orlando experiences a complex range of emotions, experiences, obstacles, and discoveries, so too will audience members as they take in a tale that sends home the universality of the human experience. Director James Ijames leads a cast of eight Villanova graduate students, including six chorus members, who each take on several roles in this heavily devised approach. Inspired by Ruhl’s use of the chorus as the motor which propels Orlando through time, Ijames says he
s part of a new initiative at The Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design, Mia Locks, senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, presents the exhibition Or Both, opening September 27, 2019. The exhibition, which runs through December 7, is part of Moore’s new Visiting Curators Initiative, which focuses on engaging new artistic input for the benefit of the Moore community and Philadelphia’s arts and culture landscape. Three curators, beginning with Locks, will bring their visions to The Galleries at Moore, a hub for contemporary art and creative exploration in the heart of Philadelphia, during the fall seasons of 2019, 2020 and 2021. Or Both is an experimental two-part exhibition that includes a solo presentation of work by Ulrike Müller alongside a group show of works by Martin Beck, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Jennie C. Annenberg Center Presents “SUGAR SKULL!” for Families
Marple Library Instrument Petting Zoo The Delaware County Symphony, in collaboration with the Marple Library, invites all families to a free Instrument Petting Zoo for children, Saturday, September 28 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in the lower level community room. Nine classically trained musicians will explain and demonstrate to the children how their specific instruments: Flute, Violin, Viola, Bassoon, Cello, Oboe, French Horn, Bass, and Clarinet, individually sound and are uniquely used in classical music to make a full symphonic sound. The program will conclude with an ensemble performance of the everpopular “Simple Gifts” and the rousing “The Saints Go Marching In” so the children may hear the sounds of the instruments performing together. Children and parents are then encouraged to mingle with the musicians to ask questions and see and handle the instruments up close. Bala Cynwyd, Belmont Hills and Ludington Libraries to Host College Admissions Workshops he Bala Cynwyd Library (131 Old Lancaster Road, Bala Cynwyd); the Belmont Hills Library (120 Mary Watersford Road, Belmont Hills) and the Ludington Library (5 South Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bryn Mawr, at the corner of Lancaster Avenue) will host repeat presentations of the four-session workshop Understanding and Demystifying College Admissions this fall. Originally conducted at the Bala Cynwyd Library in the summer of 1999, these interactive sessions will aid both parents and students in comprehending contemporary college admissions. Topics to be covered will include guidelines and parameters of present college admissions; the process of creating a college search; differences among colleges and universities; how an admissions committee operates and what criteria they seek; standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, Subject Tests, ACT); the new Coalition application; financial aid; hot topics and current trends in college admissions; and special admissions considerations. The workshops will be conducted by Wynnewood resident Cigus Vanni. Mr. Vanni recently retired from the position of lead guidance counselor at Cherry Hill West (NJ) High School and has assumed his rightful place as Neighborhood College Fairy. A former assistant dean and admissions counselor at Swarthmore College, Mr. Vanni served as an elected assembly delegate for the New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling to its parent organization, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling from 2003-

2006 and from this year through 2018. He was also appointed as a member of the Professional Development Committee of the national organization from 2007-2010, assisting in the creation and implementation of opportunities by which high school counselors and college admissions personnel can improve their professional skills and is presently a member of the Admissions Practices Committee. The sessions will be held at the Bala Cynwyd Library from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on successive Sundays: October 6, 13, 20 and 27; at the Belmont Hills Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays (break for Election Day set-up): October 21 and 28, November 11 and 18; and at Ludington Library from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on successive Sundays: November 3, 10, 17 and 24. Sessions are cumulative (students and parents may attend all as a series) but cover different topics and concerns (parents and students may attend any of the sessions independently). She’s My Sister Annual Anti-Human Trafficking 5K Walk/Run She’s My Sister, the Anti-Human Trafficking Ministry of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, will host its Fifth Annual 5KWalk/Run, on Saturday, October 5, 2019. The Walk-Run will take place in Fairmount Park, Memorial Hall at 8 a.m. On site registration opens at 7 a.m. The ministry seeks to bring awareness to and assist in combating the horrific crime of human trafficking. Victims of human trafficking are serviced through the Philadelphia Family Court System. These juvenile victims of human trafficking and child commercial sexual exploitation receive intensive, trauma informed and coordinated case management services from The Salvation Army. The youth also receive a variety of other critical assistance from court-based professionals totally dedicated to their overall success. Proceeds from the Walk/Run will be used to provide continued funding for a trauma-trafficking informed, long-term therapeutic program. This Salvation Army Program serves victims within the juvenile court system, who are 18 - 24 years old and aging out of traditional care and who need this resource to assist them in moving from victims to survivors. J EAN G RISWOLD F OUNDATION PARTNERS WITH M EALS ON W HEELS A MERICA TO R EDUCE S ENIOR I SOLATION Foundation to Donate 40 Percent of 2019 Proceeds to Advance Organization’s Senior Isolation Initiatives he Jean Griswold Foundation, a nonprofit named for the founder of Griswold Home Care, announced that it will donate 40 percent of its 2019 proceeds toward Meals on Wheels America’s work to combat senior isolation. This partnership is part of the organization’s larger initiative to raise funds and awareness to help further its intervention, research and advocacy programs that address isolation among older Americans. “We are incredibly grateful for the Jean Griswold Foundation’s donation toward our work to tackle senior isolation,” said Ellie Hollander, president and chief executive officer of Meals on Wheels America. “Our partnership with the Foundation will help us expand the programs and tools that local Meals on Wheels programs use to provide companionship to the country’s vulnerable seniors and improve their health outcomes as a whole.” Social isolation is becoming one of the biggest threats to seniors, as one in five older Americans report experiencing loneliness regularly – increasing their risk of various health complications, including cognitive decline and heart disease. Through its initiative, Meals on Wheels America is expanding its efforts to reduce senior isolation nationwide, equipping the network of local providers with funding, tools and research. “Since the Foundation’s establishment, our mission has always been to help seniors lead happy, healthy lives in the place they love most – their homes,” said Penny Kardon, executive director of the Jean Griswold Foundation. “We are honored to partner with Meals on Wheels America to address this growing issue and empower more Americans to maintain their independence and age in place.” The Jean Griswold Foundation is a private charity established by Griswold Home Care to further the company’s belief that care for the elderly and disabled should be accessible to all. Every dollar donated is used to further its mission to support programs and services that allow seniors to age in place. Formerly the Griswold Cares Foundation, the 501c3 nonprofit changed its name in 2016 to honor the founder of Griswold Home Care, Dr. Jean Griswold, who passed away in 2017. is “looking forward to creating a sense of community and ensemble amongst the tight-knit cast,” adding that “Ruhl’s concept of actors performing as their perceived gender and otherwise once again underscores the multiplicities that lie within all humans.” The challenge of cycling through so many different roles has been met with bravery and commitment by both Ijames and his cast. In preparation for the rehearsal process, Dramaturg Ilia Campbell has explored how Woolf’s personal life influenced the original novel. Woolf’s affair with a woman named Vita Sackville-West served as the inspiration for the character of Orlando. Sackville-West was described by contemporaries as androgynous (of indeterminate sex), and Woolf originally subtitled her novel A Biography. While fictional, this “biography” closely explored the varying identities of Woolf’s lover and has been described as the “most charming love letter in literature.” Ijames articulates the larger concept for Villanova Theatre’s production thus: “A group of actors come into the space, find this story, and take on the roles of Virginia Woolf’s characters in Orlando.” In order to convey the sense of an abandoned theatre, Set Designer Parris Bradley has created an open playing area while still giving access to old furniture, strewn-about set pieces and an assortment of objects one might find in a theatre, like a costume rack or a ghost light. The fast-paced, time-traveling aspects of Ruhl’s play are emphasized by Bradley’s stage, which resembles an hourglass, capturing the importance of time in this world. Props Designer Sharri Jerue helped create a world where sheets of paper are banquet tables and antique trunks become Russian ships. The use of these “found objects,” combined with Ijames and the ensemble’s collaborative sense of invention, allows for delightful theatrical discoveries. Costume Designer Janus Stefanowicz takes Ijames’ idea of a found space even further by incorporating evocative, interchangeable costume pieces that chorus members can quickly attach and remove, often right before our very eyes. In order to reflect the centuries that pass, Stefanowicz uses her masterful knowledge of period silhouettes to reflect the fashion of any suggested era with a quick glance. The multi-talented cast includes Sarah Stryker as Orlando, Angela Longo as Sasha, and Tina Lynch, Kale Thompson, Amy Abrigo, Jay V. Kimberley, Sharese Salters, and Effie Kammer portraying dozens of additional characters throughout the course of the play. Color Blind: Student Video Captures Life-Changing Moment simple act of kindness, captured on camera in December at Neumann University, has become the pivotal moment in a student-produced video that is now nominated for a national award. “Jake Loburak: The Colorblind Videographer,” a 90second video produced by communications and digital media (CDM) majors Sean Spence and Jake Loburak, is one of four finalists in the country for a College Broadcasters Best Feature News Reporting Award.

Loburak, a sophomore from Lansdale, PA, was diagnosed with Strong Deutan Color Blindness as a young child. This type of color blindness makes red, yellow, green and brown appear similar, but his visual challenges have not stopped him from being a talented videographer on the Neumann Media production team. “To me, it wasn’t a big difference in my life. Obviously, I would see things differently, but you just adapt to it,” he explained. Spence, a senior from Lansdowne, PA, became friends with Loburak through Neumann Media. Loburak is very open about his color blindness and would often joke about it with his classmates. It soon became fodder for good-natured humor among his fellow CDM students while they were working on projects together. Curious to know more about his friend’s condition, Spence researched the affliction and learned about EnChroma Color Blind glasses, which look like regular sunglasses but enable people with color blindness to see colors. The Neumann Media club quickly decided that their friend had to have these glasses. “As a staff, we collected money for the colorblind glasses. We all came together and pitched in. Even people not involved with Neumann Media donated,” said Spence. Last December, Loburak was producing “Neumann Update,” a weekly university news show in the television studio. Unexpectedly, the anchors started to read a story about color blindness. They called him to the anchor desk and presented him with the glasses. “I went up to the set and put them on. It was pretty cool,” Loburak explained. His actual on-camera reaction was to flash a smile and utter one word: “Whoa!” Of course, this revelation was captured on video and became the key moment in the production about color blindness that was submitted for the national competition. In addition to Loburak’s reaction to seeing colors, the video also illustrates the stark difference in how people with color blindness see everyday items, using rainbows and traffic lights to demonstrate the disparity. Red, yellow and green all appear as different shades of brown. At the end of October, Loburak, Spence, and Neumann Media Director Sean McDonald will travel to St. Louis for the 2019 National Student Electronic Media Convention and attend the awards ceremony there. Other finalists in the Best Feature News Reporting category are from Oregon State University, Pittsburg State University, and the University of North Florida. According to the College Broadcasters website, the judges for the contest are professionals in the field and journalism and mass communications faculty/staff members. “It’s good to get our stuff out there and to let others see that we’re doing good things here,” Spence said. “And now I’m a nationally recognized producer, which is pretty cool.”

The Mütter Museum’s newest permanent exhibition,“Spit Spreads Death: The Influenza Pandemic in Philadelphia,” opens October 17, 2019. o commemorate the 1918-19 influenza pandemic in Philadelphia that killed 20,000 people and the patriotic parade that helped spread the disease, the Mütter Museum will launch the most ambitious exhibition in its 156-year history. Spit Spreads Death: The Influenza Pandemic in Philadelphia is the Mütter Museum’s newest permanent exhibition that opens on October 17, 2019. More than just an exhibition, this comprehensive project involves a collaborative effort by historians, artists, and community health groups to produce many events and interactive components. On September 28, the 101st anniversary of the ill-fated Liberty Loan fundraising parade, U.K.-based artist collaborative Blast Theory will produce a four-mile parade from South Philadelphia to City Hall in memory of those who lost their lives to the flu. The parade will feature large, illuminated floats and a unique score created by GRAMMY-winning choir The Crossing and Pulitzer Prize and GRAMMY-winning composer David Lang, to be heard through hundreds of mobile phones of participants. Related programming includes a free flu shot clinic at the museum, a health fair, Hidden City Philly walking tours of the neighborhoods hardest hit during the pandemic, a number of public talks, and educational programming for School District of Philadelphia students. Major support for Spit Spreads Death has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, with additional support from the Groff Family Memorial Trust and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Pandemic The influenza pandemic of 1918-19, originally called the “Spanish flu,” is estimated to have killed 50-100 million people worldwide. As World War I was ending in 1918, despite warnings from physicians that the disease was spreading quickly and to avoid large crowds, more than 200,000 people packed Philadelphia’s streets for the 23-block-long Liberty Loan Parade, part of a national wartime fundraising effort. Within 72 hours, all the hospital beds in Philadelphia were full of flu patients and within a week bodies began to accumulate without burial. Within six weeks, more than 12,000 people died – a death every 5 minutes – and 20,000 had died within six months. September 28, 2019: Commemorative Parade A century later, at sunset on September 28, 2019, the Mütter Museum and Blast Theory will lead a commemorative parade through the streets of Philadelphia. immersive experiences engage audiences in theatrical and interactive events to produce intense emotional responses. Four illuminated, 20-foot-long floats, and an expected 250500 members of the public – including relatives of flu victims, museum visitors, representatives from partner health and arts organizations – will march in the parade up Broad Street to City Hall (with a joining point at Broad and Morris). The parade will bring a spectacle of light and sound to the streets of Philadelphia to commemorate the devastating impact of the 1918 flu. The cell phones of the parade participants will come together to play a world premiere piece of music by composer David Lang, performed by triple Grammy-winning choir The Crossing. October 17, 2019: Exhibition Opens More than 20,000 death certificates of individuals who died during the 1918-19 influenza pandemic in Philadelphia provided the foundation for the research that went into this project, which will feature digital interactives, objects, artifacts, 200+ photographs and documents, personal stories, historical and public health information, and a 15-25 minute art film created by Blast Theory with footage shot at the September 28, 2019 parade. While learning about one of the most significant public health events in Philadelphia’s history, the exhibition aims to confront visitors with themes that are equally relevant today and inspire critical thinking about current and future health issues. By exploring the connections between civic responsibility and public health, visitors will leave contemplating the health of the individual and of the community, as well as the role that government plays in each. About the Mütter Museum and The College of Physicians of Philadelphia The College of Physicians of Philadelphia was founded in 1787 by a group of physicians including Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of our nation’s Declaration of Independence. The College is a not-for-profit educational and cultural institution, with the mission of advancing the cause of health while upholding the ideals and heritage of medicine. The College is home to the Mütter Museum, America’s finest museum of medical history, which displays collections of anatomical specimens, models and medical instruments in a nineteenth-century setting. This includes slides of Einstein’s Brain, the 139 skulls from Hyrtl’s collection, and a biannual rotation of art exhibits that accompany the themes and aims of the museum’s collections. Philly Friendship Walk is an annual event kicking off the year to raise the crucial funds and community awareness for Philly Friendship Circle – a nonprofit building inclusive friendships in our community. The rain-or-shine event begins with a walk along a one-mile trail that’s filled with plenty of fun along the way. DJ Rak-Dan will MC a pep rally, followed by the family fun fair. The fair will include entertainment for all ages such as an ultimate bungee trampoline, inflatables, Sukkot Fall crafts, face painting and other merchandise for sale. This will be the first year that snacks will be free for everyone. To make sure the event is inclusive for people of all needs, organizers are working to designate quiet spaces as well as making sure there are plenty of sensory friendly activities, said Philly Friendship Circle Co-Founder Chani Baram. “We never want to be complacent when it comes to improving the event each year,” she said. “We want the Friendship Walk to be more accessible for everyone who attends. Everyone should be able to have a great experience when they come and feel like they are part of a welcoming community.” Proceeds raised from the walk and fair will support Friendship Circle programs such as Sunday Circle and Friends@Home. Sunday Circle is a structured social program that connects kids with special needs to area teens and young adults for activities such as art, music and dance. Friends@Home helps kids with special needs build friendships with volunteer teens in the comfort of their own home. Nugent Gallery announces a unique exhibition curated by the New York City George Billis Gallery, opening October 10 and running through November 7, 2019. “In the City,” is a visual exploration of the environs we inhabit. The East Coast is unique in its architecture, geography, and natural environment. This group exhibition brings together four artists whose individual works together show a multifaceted interpretation of cityscape with the east coast city as creative catalyst. From modern skyscrapers and iconic landmarks to graffiti-ed back alleys and vast freeway networks, to train bridges and gritty rail yards, all are subjects for these innovative artists. The Opening Reception will be October 10, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.; with a Gallery Talk at 4:30 p.m. This exhibition also offers a variety of sizes and media. The large-scale paintings of the Ben Franklin Bridge by Roland Kulla contrast with the intimate watercolors by Derek Buckner. The lush texture of urban cityscape painter Gregory Prestegord pairs with the refined realism of painter Bennett Vadnais. The viewer will be fascinated by each artist’s personal interpretation of the city as subject matter. Roland Kulla is fascinated by the built environment, reflecting on what the structures tell about their builders as well as their interaction with nature and the results of time. Since 1998, he has focused on the engineering ingenuity that created Chicago’s many bridges. Structural elements are abstracted from their context and painted with a hard-edged realism on a scale that highlights the monumentality of the forms and the creativity necessary for their existence. In 2006, he began to branch out to other “bridge” cities such as Boston, New York City and environs, Philadelphia and most recently Berlin, Germany. In addition, he has expanded his focus to include different aspects of transportation in New York City. Derek Buckner lives in Brooklyn, NY. During his career, Buckner has pursued many different themes, but the one to which he has most often returned is the urban landscape. In these paintings, he allows the viewer a distinctive look into his everyday surroundings, often including factory rooftops, bridges and the rapidly changing Gowanus Canal. The artist graduated from LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, as well as Vassar College. The Art Students League of New York and received a B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Gregory Prestegord was born and raised in Philadelphia, with a lot of graffiti art and rundown buildings. He was and is inspired by cities like this and the urban life around him, wanting to capture the quality of light and shadow and the energy of the people in the contrast of urban cityscape. He said, “As an artist, I like to combine all styles of art from impressionism, abstraction to realism into my cityscapes. My style is born from all of these inspirations and influences. I like to capture the feeling of a place, to take your eye into the painting and create a sense that you’re there – one with the composition. My paintings take on a sculptural form at times from the amount of paint and palette knife and brush work that I use to create them. The way I paint gives my pieces the feeling that they emanate from city life and urban sprawl.” The artist studied at the oldest art school in America, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Much of Bennett Vadnais’s subject matter comes from his surroundings in Manhattan and Brooklyn. With a strong background in plein air landscape painting, Vadnais finds an interesting relationship between static forms and the elusive qualities of light and the emotions they convey. Rather than trying to capture a specific moment in time, Vadnais’s paintings have a stillness that reveals the timeless character of place. He chooses not to work from digital imagery or photography, preferring to allow the image to be filtered through direct contact with the subject and through memory. He develops his relationship with the subject by doing numerous paintings and drawings on-site. Vadnais’s primary medium is acrylic. He creates his paintings with transparent layers of color, allowing him to infuse them with a natural sense of variety and complexity. The George Billis Gallery is an exhibition space with locations in New York City and Los Angeles. The New York gallery was established on March 25, 1997, and was the 12th Gallery to open in the Chelsea Arts District. In 2004, George Billis opened a second location in the burgeoning art district of Culver City, Los Angeles. The Gallery features work by both national and international emerging and established artists. The Patricia M.
