Struggling with this sudden loss, she decides to pursue his lifelong dream and journey to the North Pole. Following the route he planned and the advice of the great explorers before her, Rory packs a rucksack and her father’s ashes for a journey of love, loss, and endless snow. The production will be directed by three-time Barrymore Award-nominated director and Inis Nua Associate Director and Literary Manager Claire Moyer. Previews begin Wednesday, February 5, with opening night on Friday, February 7. The show runs through February 23, 2020 for a total of 15 performances. Michael Billington of The Guardian called A Hundred Words for Snow “an extraordinary story of a young girl’s determination to scatter her father’s ashes at the North Pole” and The Stage called the play “an ice-bound odyssey brimming with humor and humanity.” The website www.ayoungertheatre.com which seeks to encourage younger audiences said, “A Hundred Words for Snow leaves you inspired to embrace the adventure that is life, take the bad with the good and go with the flow… (but not too much!)” A Hundred Words for Snow won the 2017 Heretic Voices Monologue Competition. The play went on to be produced by Heretic Voices at the Arcola Theatre, toured the UK, and transferred to Trafalgar Studios in London where it received four Offie nominations (The Off West Wend Theatre Awards) including Best New Play and Most Promising New Playwright. Attendees will get a taste of what it takes to develop a new musical. “It’s been four years already since I began working on this project,” says the busy mother of three. “Typically, the average time it takes to fully develop a musical seven years, so we’re getting close and we are making progress.” Brilliant embodies the range of emotions a family experiences as they realize that their beloved son is atypical. Told through the eyes of the mother, the family includes her husband, a father unsure how to help his son, and a daughter on a path toward independence. More than anything, Brilliant shines light on the relationship between mother and father

Jewish Origins of Western Civilization Course Rabbi Moshe Brennan of Chabad of Penn Wynne in Wynnewood offers “Judaism’s Gifts to the World,” a new six-session course by the acclaimed Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), unearthing the Jewish roots of some of the most cherished values of Western civilization. Beginning Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. at the Kaiserman JCC, discover how common ideas of personal responsibility, the inherent sanctity of human life, institutionalized universal education, human equality, the dignity of a day of rest and devotion to family, and a sense of purpose have their origins in ancient Judaism. As with all JLI programs, “Judaism’s Gifts to the World” is designed to appeal to people at all levels of knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship. Narberth Area Garden Club’s February Program The Good Fight: Combating Invasive Plants in your Backyard – Invasive plants are one of the biggest threats to our native ecosystems. They can out compete native plants, change resource availability, and reduce habitat quality in national parks, botanic gardens, and our own backyards. In this program, Samantha Nestory of Stoneleigh: a Natural Garden, will teach us identification tips for common invasive plants, their preferred habitats, and best practices for eradication, including chemical and nonchemical methods. She will also talk about new invasive plant species that homeowners and nature enthusiasts should be on the lookout for. Walter Bobbie & Brooke Shields Featured in Reading of “The Man Who Came to Dinner” A star-studded cast led by Tony-winner Walter Bobbie and Broadway and Hollywood star Brooke Shields are featured in a benefit reading of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s iconic comedy, “The Man Who Came to Dinner” directed by Marsha Mason for Bucks County Playhouse. Performances will be held at Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope on Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m., followed by a reading in New York at the WP Theater, 2162 Broadway at 76th Street, on Monday, February 10 at 7 p.m. “The Man Who Came to Dinner” was first presented at Bucks County Playhouse in a July 1941 production that featured the playwrights, George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, along with Kitty Carlisle and Harpo Marx in his only speaking role on stage. Tickets for the New Hope reading are $25. Tickets for the New York City reading are also $25 general admission. A limited number of VIP tickets are also available for the New Hope reading for $75 and includes a post-reading reception. Immaculata Symphony Presents Its Annual Youth Concert
The Immaculata Symphony will hold its annual Youth Concert, “The Color of Sound,” on Sunday, February 9, at 3 p.m. in Alumnae Hall on the campus of Immaculata University. The Immaculata Symphony is a university-community organization, with a long and outstanding tradition that goes back to the university’s founding in 1920. Conducted by Joseph Gehring, audiences young and old will be taken on a musical tour, accompanied by familiar classical themes. The concert opens with the timeless piece that is the “William Tell Overture” by Gioachino Rossini. Next, listeners are met by the sounds of “Orpheus in the Underworld Overture” by Jacques Offenbach. as they expose their struggle to raise their child. “I’m the first to admit this story hits very close to home,” says Tapper. “When I began writing the music, I was writing from my own experiences. But then I realized that most, if not all of my friends, were going through similar experiences with their children and husbands. Our children may be struggling in different ways, but we were all experiencing the same emotions; and those were emotions that simply come with being a mother who loves her child and wants to protect him.” This will be the third staged reading for Brilliant. Woman’s Philanthropy, a division of Jewish Federation, sponsored the first performance in December followed by the Philly Friendship Circle in January. “This development of this show can go two different ways. Of course I would love to see it in a theatre and I will continue to pursue that path. However, because the show can be done so easily in any space and has such universal appeal, we are also looking to book more of these staged readings for any organization that would like to bring it to their community. This especially includes any special needs organizations. “Being able to share this story with parents of special needs children was my main goal. No one in this position should ever feel alone. Some scammers promise great wealth in exchange for a modest ‘processing fee.’ Others, pretending to call from the IRS, demand back taxes. And numerous others ask for Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, passwords, or other information that is best kept private. Most people smell a rat and ignore these entreaties, but many do not—so many that the business of scamming continues to thrive, and to victimize those who are trusting and vulnerable, especially the elderly. The results can be financially devastating to them. The Bala Cynwyd Library is sponsoring a talk, February 5, about current scams: how they’re carried out, how to detect them, how to protect those – such as elderly parents – from falling prey to them, and what to do if a scammer has gotten his/her proverbial foot in the door. The speakers will be David Schallcross from the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, along with an officer from the Lower Merion Police Department. Shallcross has worked in different capacities for over 35 years to protect communities. He has served with local police and fire departments, the U.S. Homeland Security Department, and in community crime prevention. Among other capacities, he currently serves as the Attorney General’s designee on the PA Supreme Court’s Elder Justice Advisory Council. The talk will occur on Wednesday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bala Cynwyd Library, 131 Old Lancaster Road. Admission is free. For information, call 610-664-1196.

Director Claire Moyer says “A Hundred Words for Snow is about growing up, processing grief, our relationship with our parents, and that deeply held human desire to be part of something greater than ourselves and to leave our mark on the world. It’s a play about a teenager but it speaks to audiences of all ages.” As a solo show, the responsibility for Rory’s story and the people she encounters lies in the hands of just one actor. This is a daunting task for any artist, but the show is in the capable hands of a Philly rising star – Satchel Williams, as fifteen-yearold Rory. Williams is a recent graduate of Temple University’s Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies. She made her professional debut this past summer in The Merry Wives of Windsor at Delaware Shakespeare and performed in numerous shows while at Temple including the title role in Fabulation, or the Re-Education of Undine. The set will be designed by Chris Haig, whose work was previously seen at Inis Nua on Love, Lies and Taxidermy in 2018. It will be a stylized imagining of the dramatic ice formations found in the polar regions and the audience will be seated on three sides. A Hundred Words for Snow touches on the ecology of the arctic and how it is dramatically changing in the face of climate change. Inis Nua will be taking donations before each show for Polar Bears International (polarbearsinternational.org) a non-profit dedicated to polar bear conservation and habitat preservation. Anyone who donates gets a complimentary cup of hot chocolate. Tatty Hennessy is one of the freshest young voices in British theatre. She is an award-winning playwright, dramaturg, and director. After the success of A Hundred Words for Snow, she was commissioned to write F* Off for the National Youth Theatre, exploring the experiences of the first digitally native generation by putting Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and social networks on trial. Previously she adapted The Snow Queen for Theatre N16 and developed her first play All That Lives about Henrietta Lax at the Ovalhouse Theatre. As a director she was appointed the Baylis Assistant Director to assist Max Webster on Fanny & Alexander at the Old Vic and she has directed multiple productions for Shakespeare in Squares which performs in garden squares throughout London. Claire Moyer, Associate Director and Literary Manager for Inis Nua, will direct the production. She has received three Barrymore nominations for Outstanding Direction in the past four years for her work as well as a nomination for Outstanding Overall Production of a Play for her breakout hit Spine. This will be Moyer’s eighth show for Inis Nua (The Monster in the Hall; Swallow; Radiant Vermin). She has also directed for Philadelphia Artists’ Collective, Tiny Dynamite, and Curio Theatre Company. A Hundred Words for Snow opens Friday, February 7, 2020 at 8 p.m., with preview performances Wednesday, February 5 and Thursday, February 6, at 7 p.m. The show runs for a total of 15 performances through Sunday, February 23, at 2 p.m. All performances will take place at the Louis Bluver Theatre at the Drake, 302 South Hicks Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102. South Hicks Street is next to The Drake apartment building at 1512 Spruce Street. The Takeaway – special post-show talks – will be held after the 7 p.m. performances on Wednesdays, February 12 and 19. This year’s event will also honor Dr. John Brodsky, a retired family physician who now builds harpsichords and has kindly gifted a hand-painted harpsichord to the Nelly Berman School of Music. Piano and harpsichord faculty member Dr. Anna Kislitsyna will give its inaugural performance. Other performers include Paul Arnold, violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Igor Resnianski, a professor at West Chester University, and Dr. Marianna Prjevalskaya, international performing artist and teacher at Peabody Institute in Baltimore, as well as other members of the Nelly Berman School faculty, performing solo and in ensembles. After the concert, an international spread of food from national and local businesses will be served buffet-style. National Science Foundation Funds 24 Scholarships at Neumann

he National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Neumann University a five-year grant in the amount of $649,556 to enroll, retain, and graduate students in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The bulk of the grant money will provide scholarships for 24 students seeking undergraduate degrees in biology, computer and information science, cybersecurity, data science and analytics, and mathematics. the grant will fund academic support services, stipends for summer research projects, teaching assistant salaries, and travel for student/faculty conferences. Using the NSF funds, Neumann will recruit and enroll two dozen academically talented students who will major in a STEM field and who have financial need that is not covered by federal, state and university aid. The goal is for 12 students to enroll in fall 2020 and another 12 in fall 2021. Related goals for these students include a 75 percent four-year graduation rate and a 100 percent placement rate in a STEM job or STEM graduate program within six months of graduation. Each student in the cohort will be paired with an upper-level peer mentor and participate in one five-week summer research project at Neumann in a targeted STEM field. Students will also be encouraged to serve as paid teaching assistants in one of Neumann’s STEM sections. “This award is an example of how experts outside of Neumann are recognizing the strengths of this university,” said Dr. Chris Domes, Neumann’s president. The team that will administer the grant includes professors of biology, chemistry, education, and mathematics as well as the vice president for academic affairs and professionals in institutional research and university advancement.

Delaware County Youth Orchestra Winter Concert The Delaware County Youth Orchestra presents its Winter Concert for the 2020 season. Prog-rock pioneers Crack The Sky, who Rolling Stone Magazine recently called “…the Best U.S. Prog Band You’ve Never Heard,” will be playing Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, PA, on February 9 at 7 p.m. (doors are at 6:30 p.m.) Tickets are $29 - $55 and available through Ardmore Music Hall (www.ardmoremusic.com/e/crack-the-sky-76285406705). The band cracked the charts with their highest charting debut in 40 years with their 2018 studio album Living In Reverse. It charted at #7 Heatseekers, #31 Independent Current Albums, and #40 Top Current Albums. The band also released Crackology, a collection of 12 career favorites alongside that release. Both came out on August 24, 2018. Living In Reverse showcases 12 new genre-defying Crack tracks including “Talk Talk” – the lyric video was included in their latest Rolling Stone feature, “Raining Rain” which Billboard Magazine premiered, and “Living In Reverse” which Relix premiered. Bethel Burying Ground: A Tribute to A Sacred Space Transforms Art Gallery at City Hall into Space for Reflection he City of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) will host the opening reception of Bethel Burying Ground: A Tribute to A Sacred Space in the Art Gallery at City Hall, Room 116 on Thursday, January 30, 2020 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Bethel Burying Ground: A Tribute to A Sacred Place is a new installation that honors and recognizes the historic significance of the deceased buried at Bethel Burying Ground and the early 19th century free Black community they represented. “The Bethel Burying Ground is an incredibly significant site that is a part of Philadelphia’s history and its transformation,” said Mayor Kenney. “The African American community has contributed so much to our city and nation, often without recognition. That’s why it’s so important that we remember and honor those who were buried here and reflect on their impact on our city.” “The City is working with the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site Memorial Committee to develop a meaningful memorial to celebrate the lives of the individuals interred at the Bethel Burying Ground,” added Kelly Lee, Chief Cultural Officer. “Bethel Burying Ground: A Tribute to A Sacred Place is one of the ways we are celebrating these individuals while educating Philadelphians about the history of the Bethel Burying Ground during the development of the memorial.” With contributions from Mother Bethel AME Church, historian Terry Buckalew (author of The Bethel Burying Ground Project), the Charles Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University Libraries, documentary filmmaker Louis Massiah, and original works by 49 artists from the Philadelphia region, OACCE’s gallery has been transformed into a space of reflection. “OACCE exhibitions traditionally display art objects or artifacts that are meant to inspire, provoke or move visitors,” said Tu Huynh, City Hall Exhibitions Manager. “For this showcase, the gallery becomes an immersive space where visitors are greeted by an overwhelming number of names on the gallery walls and confronted with this vital history of early 19th century Philadelphia.” Bethel Burying Ground: A Tribute to A Sacred Place features visuals, text and video about the history of the Bethel Burying Ground including nearly 2,500 names of the approximately 5,000 individuals buried at Bethel Burying Ground and over 100 church fans created by artists paying tribute to specific individuals, including many children, buried at the site between 1810-1864. The exhibition strives to avenge their memory by showing that their history matters. The opening reception is free, open to the public and includes light refreshments. Bethel Burying Ground: A Tribute to A Sacred is on display through March 13, 2020 in the Art Gallery at City Hall, Room 116 and First Floor Display Cases. Mary Jo Daley, D-Montgomery, will present a program titled “Clean Slate: Expungement and Pardons” from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, February 6 at Conshohocken Borough Hall, 400 Fayette Street, Suite 200. Legal experts will be available to provide free information about the criminal justice system and explain eligibility requirements for expungements, pardons and the sealing of criminal records under Pennsylvania’s Clean Slate Law. They will also offer limited on-site application assistance. “If you’re seeking a productive and prosperous life after a mistake from your past, there are avenues you can take,” Daley said. “This program highlights those paths and helps provide an outline for second-chance success.” Daley said interested individuals must bring their case information, including a copy of court records or minute orders. Individuals must not be in violation, on parole or on probation. For expungements and Clean Slate sealings, the criminal record must be from Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks or Chester counties, regardless of where the requester lives now. For pardons, the requester must live in one of the same four counties, regardless of where the record is from. I ♥ Alice ♥ I, by Amy Conroy, is co-directed by Curio company members Gay Carducci and Rachel Gluck. The show, which is part of Theatre Philadelphia’s Philly Theatre Week 2020, begins previews February 5, opens on Saturday, February 8 at 8 p.m., and runs through February 29. Tickets cost between $15 and $30 and are available online at www.curiotheatre.org or by phone at 215-921-8243. Curio is also offering $10 Student Rush tickets for each show, which are available at the door starting at 7:50 p.m. before each performance. All shows are performed at Curio’s home theatre at the Calvary Center for Culture and Community, 4740 Baltimore Ave., Philadelphia. In I ♥ Alice ♥ I, two exceptional, opinionated women are spotted kissing each other in Dublin’s Crumlin Shopping Centre in this surprisingly funny and heartfelt new work. And now they’re in a show ... reluctantly. Defying stereotypes, they’re here to share with the audience something they’ve never dared show before. They are very nervous. And it shows. This new work from Ireland is a beautiful love story about two women called Alice. “I think what drew me to this piece first and foremost was the sheer joy it expresses,” Gluck said of Alice. “The majority of same-sex love stories we see in theatre and film are tragedies. They mine homophobia and other sources of LGBTQ+ trauma for conflict and drama. This is a piece that says you can simply tell a love story.” “One of the things that initially drew me to this play was that it’s about two women of age,” Carducci added. “We’re doing a season of comedy for our 15th anniversary and I did immediately love the humor, but also the heart and depth of the characters. These are two people in love, in a relationship that has stood the test of time. They are everyday people, like me and like you. Their ups and downs have only made them stronger. I think that sometimes there is a concept that you only grow and gain new insights when you are young. These two characters show that this is not always the case.” Company members Trice Baldwin Browns and Aetna Gallagher star in this lovely story from the Emerald Isle. Curio Managing Director Gay Carducci co-directs this piece with company member Rachel Gluck. Curio Artistic Director Paul Kuhn is designing the set and Gallagher is doing double duty designing the costumes. Damien Figueras is the Sound Designer, Jillian Schwab is Props Designer and Dalton Whiting is the Lighting Designer. “The fact that it’s is a love story about two women whose relationship spans five decades shows us that same sex couples not only can live, but have been living joyful lives together for a long time, and that trauma is not the only compelling focus for narratives involving LGBT+ characters,” Gluck said. Curio Theatre Company’s mission is to serve audiences in West Philadelphia and beyond with high quality, affordable theatre performances; to develop artistic talent through ensemble, company-based training and rehearsal processes; and to further academic, social, and personal development through arts education. The company’s Educational program was awarded the 2017 Victory Theatre Education Award at the Barrymore Awards Ceremony. It marked the company’s first Barrymore Award. Curio Theatre Company is a 501(c)3 non-profit company based in West Philadelphia. The Company was founded by professional artists and administrators who met at the Hedgerow Theatre in Rose Valley, PA, and incorporated as a non-profit in 2004. After touring locally and internationally for several years, the Company began a search for a permanent home. In January 2005, Curio Theatre Company joined in partnership with the Calvary Center for Culture and Community at 4740 Baltimore Avenue, Philadelphia. This partnership provides Curio with a performance venue and classrooms within the Calvary Center as well as office space and company housing in the adjacent parish house. In return Curio is assisting the Calvary Center in creating a professional Performing Arts Venue in the heart of West Philadelphia.
