The choirs of The Redeemer are joined by Grammy nominated artists soprano Arianna Zukerman (shown) and The Lincoln Trio for the Philadelphia premiere of James Whitbourn’s “Annelies,” the first choral setting of The Diary of Anne Frank, on Saturday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. and The Lincoln Trio for the Philadelphia premiere of James Whitbourn’s “Annelies,” the first choral setting of The Diary of Anne Frank. Dr. Michael Diorio will conduct this exceptional musical presentation; a story of hope, faith and perseverance. Speaking about “Annelies” composer James Whitbourn says: “Rarely have I found a text so compelling and the inspiration for so much thought, simply as a document in its own right. It was to be a commemorative work, not only for Anne Frank, but for those by whose side she lived, those she watched with penetrating eyes, and those voiceless millions who shared her fate. In the end, though, it is the text itself that is of such strength that it finds a way to leave the indelible mark of that young girl whose wisdom and perception can teach us all.” This production is in cooperation with Main Line Reform Congregation and its Rabbi, David Straus, who will give a pre-concert talk. Church of the Redeemer is honored to present this significant musical offering in this important year of remembrance. Church of the Redeemer is located at the corner of Pennswood and New Gulph Roads in Bryn Mawr, PA. There is parking available. Tickets will be sold at the door: $25/regular admission, $15/students, children under 12 free. Visit www.theredeemer.org/special_music for details.

Mendelssohn Club Chorus of Philadelphia Celebrates “Nature/Nurture” Family Exhibit at Rosemont’s Patricia Beethoven’s 250th Birthday with a Performance in Two Parts P M. Nugent Gallery he Patricia M. Nugent Gallery presents “Nature/Nurture,” a collection of art from two families that is on exhibit February 20 - March 19. An Opening Reception and Gallery Talk was held February 20. Art sometimes runs in families. Is it nature or nurture? A bit of both? Examples from art history include Jan Brueghel, Elder and Younger, Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, Suzanne Valadon and her son Maurice Utrillo, José Ruiz Blasco and his son Pablo Picasso. This show brings two art making families from the Philadelphia region together. Sarah Bloom is a photographer who also works in transfer print and mixed media like her mother, Rosalind. Rosalind uses bits of old paintings as characters in her mixed media pieces. Found and repurposed materials are a source of meaning and inspiration for Dan Schimmel, while mother Eleanor is devoted to working in encaustic. As individuals, and as families, these artists all share, in addition to artistic talent, a commitment to social and environmental justice. The Patricia M. Nugent Gallery is in the Lawrence Hall on the campus of Rosemont College, 1400 Montgomery Avenue, Rosemont, PA 19010. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment. For information, call 610-527-0200 ext. 2967 or visit www.rosemont.edu.

T

erforming in the breath-taking Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square, the Mendelssohn Club Chorus invites the community to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th with the performance of two of his most moving and unusual masterworks: Mass in C and Choral Fantasy. The “Departures: Beethoven Mass in C and Choral Fantasy”concert will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Holy Trinity, 1904 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Tickets: General Admission $32, Preferred Seating $42, Student $20. For the 2019-2020 season, the Mendelssohn Club Chorus is exploring and performing works that were groundbreaking at the time they were created and ushered progressive compositional ideas into the landscape of choral music. The concert title, Departures, relates how these two works served as points of departure for the composer – both of which were vastly different from what concert-goers of the day might expect. An underrated masterpiece, Mass in C opened up new worlds of expression for the liturgical texts of the Mass. His novel approach was expressly modern and reached into the future.

Choral Fantasy was a new type of composition: a large symphonic work for piano, orchestra, and chorus. One of his most intriguing works, Beethoven overcame confines and conventions in this genre-defying hybrid composition. The concert will feature Symphony in C and concert pianist Tomoko Kanamaru alongside Mendelssohn Club’s core professional singers. Dr Kanamaru is a member of Camerata Philadelphia and the Binghamton Philharmonic, is regularly featured as a guest artist with the New York Philharmonic’s Ensembles chamber music series at Merkin Concert Hall and with the Annapolis Symphony, and is an Associate Professor of Music at The College of New Jersey. The nationally-recognized Symphony in C is one of three professional training orchestras in the United States, preparing musicians and conductors who are on the cusp of worldclass careers through concert performances, educational outreach, and professional development programs. Full season details and ticket information are available on the Mendelssohn Club Chorus website: www.mcchorus.org.

Delaware County Symphony Concert The Delaware County Symphony, under the baton of guest conductor Sebastian Grand, opens this March 1 concert with the ever popular Overture to La Forza del Destino by Guiseppe Verdi which captures the vibrant emotions of Italian Opera. The program continues with the lush and romantic sounds of Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff featuring guest soloist Tom Hicks (shown) and concludes with Symphony No. 4 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Rachmaninoff’s second piano concerto is said to be an emotional journey into the inner soul of Russian romanticism by sharing majestic melodies of love, loss and triumph. His composing genius in this breathtaking work is built on soaring Russian melodies and soothing inner harmonies that are dramatically exchanged between the pianist and the symphony. The work, with over 29,000 notes, is a technical challenge for all pianists and requires a special artist with superb virtuosic skills and emotional depth. It is Rachmaninoff’s most popular enduring and passionate piece and it established his fame as a concerto composer. Enjoy a free pre-concert lecture about the composer by Dr. C. Michael Kelly from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. The concert starts at 3 p.m. at Neumann University’s Bruder Life Center, Meagher Theatre, 1 Neumann Dr., Aston, PA 19014. There is ample free parking adjacent to the theatre and the Life Center is handicapped accessible. Tickets are $20 or senior $17. For info, call 610-879-7059 or visit www.dcsmusic.org.

Bristol Riverside Theatre Kicks Up Heels for Award-Winning Musical Cabaret March 10 - April 12 Famous musical explores timely and relevant message about apathy, indifference and totalitarianism.

eave your troubles at the door and come hear the music play. Bristol Riverside Theatre presents the landmark Broadway musical Cabaret, with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff. Dark changes are taking place in early 1930s Germany and the Kit Kat Klub invites all who enter to cast their worries aside. Inside, American writer Cliff Bradshaw meets fellow English ex-pat and star of the cabaret, Sally Bowles. The lovers’ attempts to remain in the world of fantasy are fleeting as real- From left – leading the “Cabaret” cast are Broadway veteran Robb Sapp as ity always pays a visit, even at the cabaret where life is always beautiful. The Nazis the Emcee, Lauren Molina as Sally rise to power is knocking at the front door and the characters find themselves Bowles, and Sean Thompson, who is caught up in the swirling maelstrom of a changing society. Winner of Twelve TONY Awards, the Kander and Ebb’s musical features one of Broadway’s most memo- also a BRT veteran and local favorite, as writer Cliff Bradshaw. rable scores, including “Money,” “Willkommen,” Maybe This Time” and “Cabaret.” Directed by Artistic Director Keith Baker, Cabaret runs from March 10 through April 12, 2020, with opening night on March 12 at 7:30 p.m. All performances will be held at Bristol Riverside Theatre, located at 120 Radcliffe Street. Tickets are on sale now starting at $48, with military and student discounts available. New for Cabaret, audiences can enjoy an up-close-and-personal view of the action that is only a wink and a kiss away, with special cabaret-style seating at every performance. Cabaret debuted in 1966 as a Broadway musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff. Cabaret was based on the 1951 play I Am A Camera by John Van Druten, which was adapted from the short 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. The musical opened on Broadway on November 20, 1966 and closed on September 6, 1969, after 1,165 performances and 21 previews. The musical went on to premiere in London’s West End on February 28, 1968. Cabaret had seven major revivals on Broadway and in London. Cabaret was also turned into an eight-time Oscar-winning 1972 movie starring powerhouses Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey. Bristol Riverside Theatre’s production is based on the 1998 version. This same version was used for the revival co-directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall and directed by Sam Mendes that originally starred Alan Cumming and the late Natasha Richardson. While Cabaret is known for the celebrities, the music, the high heels and the fishnets, the work brings with it timely and dark examination of apathy and indifference still relevant today. Leading the cast are Broadway veteran Robb Sapp as the Emcee, Lauren Molina as Sally Bowles, and Sean Thompson, who is also a BRT veteran and local favorite, as writer Cliff Bradshaw. “I have wanted to share the brilliance of Cabaret with our audiences for a long time,” said Baker. “Cabaret is a true cautionary tale about casual indifference—that could happen anywhere, at any time, no matter what side of the aisle you find yourself on. Cabaret is just as relevant today as it was when it debuted in the 1960s. The events that truly shape our lives happen slowly, incrementally and often without our awareness. This story is a timely examination of darker forces at work in Germany in the early 1930s.” Baker added, “I invite audiences to come for the music, sparkle and romance. I challenge audiences to leave talking about the important and timely messages for days and weeks after the curtain comes down.” Tickets can be purchased online at www.brtstage.org, at the theatre’s box office, or over the phone at 215-785-0100.

wright Sam Shepard’s Buried Child takes a searing look at the American Family in all its glorious dysfunction. Over the course of one day on an isolated Illinois farm, we are introduced to a family lost in its secrets and unable to rise above its past. When the family’s prodigal grandson returns unannounced with his spirited girlfriend, the past and present suddenly collide with dark humor and brutal honesty that is characteristic of Sam Shepard, taking what we thought we knew about love and family, and turning it inside out. Buried Child won the 1979 Obie Award for Playwriting and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, launching Shepard to national fame as a playwright. The Broadway revival in 1996 received five Tony nominations, including Best Play. Samuel Shepard Rogers III, known professionally as Sam Shepard, was an American actor, playwright, author, screenwriter, and director whose career spanned half a century. He won ten Obie Awards for writing and directing, the most won by any writer or director. He wrote 44 plays as well as several books of short stories, essays, and memoirs. Shepard was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in the 1983 film The Right Stuff. He received the PEN/Laura Pels Theater Award as a master American dramatist in 2009. New York magazine described Shepard as “the greatest American playwright of his generation.” Old Academy Players’ stellar cast includes: Charles Hoffmann as Father Dewis, Eric Rupp as Bradley, Kelsey Hébert as Shelly, Lee Stover as Vincent, Lorraine Barrett as Halie, Rob Rosiello as Tilden, and Tim Andersson as Dodge. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Parking for all performances is free. Ticket price is $20 per adult; $10 per student with valid ID. Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This unique concert experience weaves Hornsby’s rock and bluegrass background with classical and contemporary, and we know this will be appealing to diverse musical backgrounds and tastes.” Bruce’s career first took off when he released his widely popular hit “The Way It Is” with his band the Range in 1986. After the success of Bruce’s single, he released his album of the same name, which later went on to become platinum certified. During the following year, Bruce went on to win a Grammy® Award for Best New Artist, beating out Glass Tiger, Timbuk3, and Nu Shooz. In 1988, Hornsby appeared on stage with The Grateful Dead, a collaboration that would continue until The Grateful Dead’s last performance years later. Bruce has also made appearances on albums with Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson; Clannad; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; and Stevie Nicks. Hornsby released his first solo album, Harbor Lights, in 1993. The jazz-oriented record featured an all-star lineup, including Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Jerry Garcia, Phil Collins, and Bonnie Raitt. This project led Hornsby to secure his third Grammy® Award for Best Pop Instrumental for “Barcelona Mona,” which was composed with Branford Marsalis for the

Barcelona Olympics. For the release of his newest album Absolute Zero, Bruce found himself returning to traditional American roots forms, while collaborating with Ricky Skaggs in the process. yMusic, a sextet ensemble band, has recently been taking the classical scene by storm by playing original classical music while incorporating a modern, contemporary sound. Founded in New York City in 2008, yMusic believes in presenting excellent, emotionally communicative music, regardless of style or idiom. Their creative and artistic talent (string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet) has attracted the attention of highprofile collaborators – from Paul Simon to Ben Folds – and has inspired original works by some of today’s foremost composers, including Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, and Andrew Norman. They have received critical acclaim from well-known publications such as NPR, The New Yorker, and Pitchfork. Tickets are on sale now starting at $30.
