“History Made Personal: The Civil War” Comes to Sanderson Museum he Christian C. Sanderson Museum in Chadds Ford presents a new exhibit: “History Made Personal: The Civil War” starting September 27. The opening of this exhibit will be celebrated with events on September 27, 28 and 29, including an opening reception, a reading of a children’s book, and an appearance by local author Bruce Mowday. The exhibit will be on display at the museum through November 30. This exciting Civil War exhibit will include a letter written by the man who lowered the Union flag at Fort Sumter, the purse that was in Jennie Wade’s apron pocket when she was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg and much, much more. The opening of the exhibit begins Friday, September 27 with a reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The reception includes refreshments, music and a Civil War reenactor dressed in an authentic uniform. The reenactor will put on an exciting weapon demonstration and teach visitors about his clothing and equipment. Tickets to the reception are $5 for Sanderson Museum members and $10 for non-members. Space is limited to attend the reception, so reserva-

tions are suggested. On Saturday, September 28, the museum will entertain children with Li’l Dan, The Drummer Boy, by Romare Bearden, presented by a recorded reading by Maya Angelou. Fourth Annual BreastFest Philly he Tyanna Foundation, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to improving the lives of breast cancer patients, is hosting the third annual BreastFest Philly on Saturday, September 28 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Mad River Bar & Grille (4100 Main Street in Manayunk). BreastFest is the foundation’s flagship event and has raised over one million dollars for breast cancer awareness, research, services, education, treatment and patient care. Proceeds from the event benefit the breast cancer center at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Specifically to assist people who do not have insurance to receive mammograms and treatment. Guests attending the event will have the opportunity to learn more about Fox Chase’s breast cancer programs through visiting the Center’s mobile mammography van, which will be on-site at BreastFest Philly. The van is the only one of its kind in the Philadelphia region that brings breast cancer screening right into the community. Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction with generous items donated by local sponsors and buy branded apparel by presenting sponsor Under Armour.

Conor and Rory Makem are the sons of “The Godfather of Irish Music” Tommy Makem, who helped bring Irish music into the international spotlight during the latter half of the 20th century. Tommy Makem’s success garnered three honorary doctorates, numerous lifetime achievement awards and his place on an Irish stamp. Today, his sons continue the lineage of one of Irish music’s dynasties. Mickey and Liam Spain learned traditional folk songs from their father, Michael, who was a successful Irish performer throughout New England for decades. Mickey’s rich baritone and Liam’s mastery of stringed instruments quickly found a home when the Makems met the Spains, and the brothers realized the power of their combined talents. The Makem and Spain Brothers are honoring their iconic lineages by preserving old folk songs, while also creating the future of the tradition. Their powerhouse vocals allow them to belt out old Irish standards and capture the essence of a genre steeped in history.

Democracy Unplugged Presents “The ACA and You” emocracy Unplugged is presenting a program on the effects of the ACA (Affordable Care Act). This program will feature Tamia Booker of HHS (Health and Human Ser vices). This program will be on Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. The venue will be The Ludington Library, at the intersection of Bryn Mawr and Lancaster Avenues (5 S. Bryn Mawr Ave.) in Bryn Mawr. This will be the only local public presentation on the Health Insurance Exchange in this area before the October 1st Open Enrollment date. Tamia Booker is the Executive Officer for Region 3 which consists of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia. Prior to taking this position in the Regional office, Tamia worked in the DC Headquarters at HHS on Affordable Care Act Outreach for 3 years on women, African

American, youth, public health and prevention issues. Through this role, Tamia was in charge of educating these constituencies on the benefits of the ACA through various events and activities. After the introduction, Tamia Booker will speak for about 20 minutes after which there will be an audience question and answer session. The moderator will be Roger Balson. Hagley Car Show to Bring 500 Antiques to Annual Event he Hagley Car Show returns on Sunday, September 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors may browse more than 500 antique and restored cars, trucks, and motorcycles. This year’s special feature is American manufacturers’ high performance cars. Parking for the Car Show is at Hagley. High performance automobiles had additions done to them over their base models to improve their performance and enhance styling characteristics. The Players Club of Swarthmore Opens Season with an Alan Ayckbourn Comic Fantasy “Comic Potential” CS starts off the season with a play that’s sort of a cross between the Sci-Fi channel and Comedy Cen tral: “Comic Potential.” Ayckbourn is one of England’s most prolific playwrights, and his works have enjoyed successful productions around the world. He has written and produced more than seventy full-length plays. Often called “England’s version of Neil Simon,” Alan Ayckbourn’s work usually has some unique plot device, or some interesting twist, that takes you by surprise. “Comic Potential” is no exception. In the not-too-distant future characters on soap operas can be played by robots—or so says Alan Ayckbourn in this madcap comedy, which also manages to be a hilarious satire of the TV business. The play was Ayckbourn's second exploration into science fiction, the first being Henceforward. He’s done others, but “Comic Potential” originated from the idea that the ability to laugh and the ability to fall in love are both characteristics that differentiate humans from androids. “Comic Potential” explores the concept – in Ayckbourn’s unique way – of whether either of the actions in an android would be considered a malfunction. Of course, the idea of robots replacing real actors would be a thespian’s nightmare. But Ayckbourn makes the whole idea hilariously funny. Will Adam get the green light on his series? Will love prevail? And what would that be like, anyway? Come and find out! With bewildering speed, Jacie learns to read; the text, naturally, is the Book of Genesis. She tries on dresses in an elegant store, she tries to assimilate in a fancy restaurant…. It’s a wonderful challenge for an actress. Jacie is one of Ayckbourn’s greatest characters—the actress who originated the role in the West End won all of London’s major acting awards. Britain’s “grand master of comedy” is also one of the Players Club’s favorites, having produced Communicating Doors in 2001 and Absurd Person Singular in 1994. Director George Mulford (who has been active at the Club for almost 40 years) has always been a fan and is excited to present this wonderful comedy to Players Club audiences. He’s assembled a cast of long-time PCS favorites and talented newcomers to bring it all to life. Ed Donlevie (who charmed audiences as the Prince in Once Upon a Mattress) is playing Adam and Elizabeth Iannacci (How To Succeed…) takes on the challenging role of Jacie. Joining them in supporting roles are Anthony San Filippo (Brighton Beach Memoirs), Ellie Knickman, Ryan Stone (Brighton Beach Memoirs), Janean Clare (The Beaux Stratagem), Paul Kerrigan (The Producers), Donna Kelly Romero, Ken Wilson (Our Town), Jack Murphy, Elizabeth Gallagher, Ed Gretz (Our Town), Jillian Haas (A Christmas Carol), Matthan T. Griggs and Adam Young. “Comic Potential” takes place primarily in a TV Studio, so there are some interesting technical challenges involved. The actors will be performing on a set designed by Kirk Paul, and Alan Stamford will create the lighting design. Choreography is being provided by Emily Fishman, with Bill Whipple creating the soundscape needed to create the play’s world. Scenic Artist Sandy Goldsborough will create scenic elements needed for the TV studio. Costumes are being provided by Betsy Berwick, Reba Ferdman, Dot Kowal, Sarah Rehberg and Cindy Schneeman; properties by Laura Kuserk and Pat Maze. Leslie Miller is the production’s producer and George Ainslie is serving as an advisor. “Comic Potential” opens on the Players Club’s Mainstage on September 20 and runs until October 5, 2013. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The “Meet The Artists” post-show discussion will occur following the 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, October 3. Audience Advisory—contains some adult language. The Club’s Mainstage space is a fully handicapped accessible 300-seat proscenium theatre. There is plenty of free off-street parking and the Mainstage is equipped with Assisted Listening devices. The Players Club is committed to offering audiences a quality theatrical experience; PCS may be embarking on its second century, be they are always looking to be on the cutting edge of today’s theatre scene. BACK-TO-SCHOOL NEWS Libraries to Host Presentations of College Admissions Workshops The Haverford School Celebrates 130th Year of Educating Boys T he Bala Cynwyd Library (131 Old Lancaster Road, Bala Cynwyd); the Belmont Hills Library (120 Mary Watersford Road, Belmont Hills) and the Ludington Library (5 South Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bryn Mawr, at the corner of Lancaster Avenue) will host presentations of the four-session workshop Understanding and Demystifying College Admissions this fall. These interactive sessions will aid both parents and students in comprehending contemporary college admissions. Topics to be covered will include guidelines and parameters of present college admissions; the process of creating a college search; differences among colleges and universities; how an admissions committee operates and what criteria they seek; standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, Subject Tests, ACT); financial aid; hot topics and current trends in college admissions; and special admissions considerations. The workshops are conducted by Bala Cynwyd resident Cigus Vanni. Mr. Vanni is lead guidance counselor at Cherry Hill West (NJ) High School and was previously director of counseling at Bishop Eustace Prep School in south Jersey. A former assistant dean and admissions counselor at Swarthmore College, Mr. Vanni served as an elected assembly delegate for the New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling to its parent organization, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling from 2003 to 2006. He was also appointed as a member of the Professional Development Committee of the national organization from 2007-2010, assisting in the creation and implementation of opportunities by which high school counselors and college admissions personnel can improve their professional skills. The sessions will be held at the Bala Cynwyd Library from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on successive Wednesdays: September 25; October 2, 9 and 16; at the Belmont Hills Library from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on successive Tuesdays: October 8, 15, 22 and 29; and at Ludington Library from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on the following Tuesday evenings: November 5, 12, 26; and December 3 (no meeting on November 19). Sessions are cumulative (students and parents may attend all as a series) but cover different topics and concerns (parents and students may attend any of the sessions independently). There is no fee associated with these workshops. Sessions are neither endorsed nor sponsored by the Lower Merion Library Association, and are intended to augment – rather than supplant or substitute for – high school counseling efforts. Einstein Healthcare Network to Hold Free Tay-Sachs Disease Screenings for Irish Population September 25 instein Medical Center Philadelphia is offering free TaySachs disease screenings to those of Irish descent Wednesday, September 25 at the Irish Immigration Center at 7 South Cedar Lane, Upper Darby PA from 5 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Screenings – which involve a simple blood test – are free to those who participate. To be eligible, participants must be at least 18 years of age and have at least three grandparents of Irish descent. Tay-Sachs Disease is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that can be passed on to children when both parents are carriers of an altered gene. Babies born with Tay-Sachs disease appear normal at birth, and symptoms of the disease do not appear until the infants are about four to six months of age when they begin to lose previously attained skills, such as sitting up or rolling over. Children then gradually lose their sight, hearing and swallowing abilities. These children usually die by the age of five.

In the past, Tay-Sachs was often thought of as a Jewish genetic disorder due to its large presence among Ashkenazi Jews. But, cases of Tay-Sachs have been identified in the Irish population right here in Philadelphia over the last few years. That’s why Dr. Adele Schneider, director of clinical genetics at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and her team at Einstein are conducting a study to find out just how high the carrier rate is among people of Irish descent. The study, the only one done in the Irish population since DNA testing for the gene mutation has been available, aims to screen 1,000 people, and is funded by the Albert Einstein Society and the National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association of Delaware Valley. If the carrier rate turns out to be high, then large-scale screening initiatives – like those conducted through the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases at Einstein and other facilities throughout the country – could identify carriers before they pass on the Tay-Sachs gene. First Day of School for Devon Prep hen Devon Prep students arrived on campus September 3, for the first day of the new school year they reconnected with old classmates, welcomed new ones, received their class schedules, and attended Mass together in the school’s gym. Headmaster Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P., served as the principal celebrant of the opening day Mass. He welcomed ever yone back to school and introduced the theme for the year, “Blessed are the Clean of Heart, For they will know God.” Fr. Shea also congratulated Middle School Director Mr. Barry Brazunas who began his 45th year in education on that day. Three seniors were also recognized for breaking school athletic records during the previous year. Benjamin Conser of Audubon and Andrew Brekus of Broomall broke the school record for singles matches won in Tennis. Bring your family, friends and clubs to explore the night sky and find the answers to these questions and more during Montgomery County Community College’s free community nights in its state-of-the-art Observatory and Obser vation Deck. The College will hold six community observatory sessions in fall, winter and early spring on the following Mondays: Sept. 16, 8-10 p.m.; Oct. 7, 7-9 p.m.; Nov. 11, 7-9 p.m.; Feb. 3, 7-9 p.m.; March 17, 8-10 p.m.; and April 7, 810 p.m. The Observatory is located on the third floor of the College’s Advanced Technology Center, Central Campus, 1313 Morris Road, Blue Bell. tion about cancelation due to weather conditions. The Observatory and Observation Deck are features of the College’s 60,000 square-foot Advanced Technology Center. The Observatory features a 16-inch MEADE Schmidt-Cassegrain research-level telescope and a 90-mm Coronado telescope for safe observation of the sun. All of the instruments are controllable both in the classroom as well as in the Observatory itself. Through a fiber network, images can be downloaded for further study and comparison and can be used in online courses. Community nights are free of charge and are open to the public, and astronomy clubs and scout troops are welcome. Students from the College’s Introduction to Astronomy course volunteer during the event to share their knowledge and assist visitors with using the telescope and viewing equipment.

Inspirational Author Donald L. Brown Shares His Unbelievable Journey
Symphony Square Senior Living Launches Book and Author Series Monday, September 16, 2013 • 4 p.m. FREE to the public. Seating is limited, must RSVP. After the presentation, cocktails will be served. “The Morphine Dream” charts Brown’s personal story of how his father’s suicide spun his family into chaos. A promising athlete, he charts how he became wheel-chair bound and despondent after an accident that crushed his knee. He felt utterly defeated … until he had a dream while taking morphine for pain. His dream was to graduate from Harvard Law School and to get out of that wheelchair and, once again, walk … walk all the way across America! Attendees will discover how Brown accomplished his dream in only three years. For those who need a dose of hope, or feel that the odds in life are stacked against them, meeting author Donald L. Brown is sure to inspire and provide encouragement. This special presentation will also provide attendees with an opportunity to meet other book lovers in the community.
