his summer, Martins Run is hosting the artwork of past and present Martins Run residents for the Spotlight Artist Series. On display in the Martins Run art gallery from July 1 through

She mostly enjoys creating portraitures in pastels. August 31, the current exhibit features the impressive works of 27 artists, representing a range of art forms, from needlepoint to painting with oils, acrylics, pastels, and watercolors. The public is invited to tour the exhibit between 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The resident-artists whose works are featured in the exhibit have varied and colorful backgrounds. One began his art career working for his family’s sign business while another took formal art classes at the age of 70. Several of the artists won awards for their work while others practiced their craft as a favorite pastime. The Spotlight Artist Series, which began in August, 2012, was created to bring in local artists from the surrounding community to the Martins Run community and to expose the residents, many of whom are artists themselves, to the talented works of these individuals through a rotating art display. “Imaginings from Nature,” the new exhibition at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG), is a compilation of whimsical and wild narratives by local ceramic artist Katia McGuirk. Walk into the earthy, storybook dreamscapes of McGuirk’s forestlike animal figurines. Sparrows, owls, squirrels, and rabbits scamper across PMG’s walls; clay flowers climb up from the floor; trees lure viewers, offering carefully-crafted leaves and apples. Twilight Trip through Laurel Hill Philadelphia’s streets are as varied as her residents. August Exhibition at ManayunkRoxborough Art Center n August, the ManayunkRoxborough Art Center (MRAC) will present “Generationz,” an exhibition featuring artwork by Monique Brand and three generations of the Nanton/Brand family, along with new work in various styles and media by members of the Manayunk-Roxborough Artists’ Co-Op. The opening reception for this show is Saturday, August 3, from 5 to 9 p.m. The art center is located at 419 Green Lane (rear), Philadelphia, PA 19128. A Roxborough resident for seven years, Monique Brand grew up in a family of visual artists in Queens, NY, where she began drawing as a child. Brand’s father, Lawrence Nanton, was an editorial graphic designer and portrait painter and her mother held lifelong fascinations with history and art. Her father worked in New Clifton Nanton's photograph, “Rose.” York City and she recalls meeting him at the Art Students’ League where the two of them attended classes, sometimes together. Studying and drawing models of every shape and size honed her observational skills as well as her appreciation of the range of human body types. Along with Brand’s photographic works and illustrations, the exhibit will include photography by Clifton, Michael and Steven Nanton, paintings by Lawrence Nanton and calligraphic works by Colette Roberts. An electrical engineer and photographer, Brand’s grandfather, Clifton Nanton, planted the seed that grew into her interest in photography when she was a girl. He showed her one interesting element of a camera at a time. Brand’s father and uncles took up photography also, while her aunt, Colette Roberts, mastered calligraphy. Brand admits to having tried her hand at this highly specialized form of writing, as she notes, “…long enough to appreciate how difficult it is.” Her uncle, Michael Nanton, worked at various photographic studios in NYC and was Supervisor for Canon's Manhattan showroom, while her uncle Steven Nanton has done freelance photography for the New York Post. Brand majored in illustration at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. She cites Maxfield Parrish and George Stavrinos as influences on her drawing skills and Annie Leibovitz and Danny Clinch as inspirations for her photographic work. Her father’s was the greatest influence in her creativity. Both of them were trained as traditional artists and both applied these skills when they made the transition to graphic design on the computer. Brand now makes her living as a freelance graphic designer, having worked for such firms as the Campbell Soup Company, the Tasty Baking Company (“Tastykake”) and Motorola. She also creatively collaborates with her husband, Mike Brand who is a videographer/photographer. Also in August, MRAC artists Francesco Sessa (oil paintings of landscapes) and Nicholas Longenecker (spatial abstracts in acrylic) will exhibit their work in a joint effort of the art center and the Roxborough Development Corporation (RDC). The opening reception for “Classic Meets Contemporary” is Saturday August 10, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., at the RDC Gallery, 6111 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia PA, 19128. MRAC’s Summer Children’s Art Camp – “Creating Outside the Lines” has begun, but there are spaces available in many of the week-long class sessions in clay, printmaking, painting, and much more. Soprano Laurice Kennel will sing the role of “Cio-Cio San,” the ill-fated geisha in DVOC’s production of “Madame Butterfly,” August 3, 7 & 10. Ms. Kennel has sung with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, New York City Opera at Lincoln Center, Lyric Opera Company Los Angeles, and OperaDelaware. ove and honor resonate with the force of thunder in the Delaware Valley Opera Company’s production of Puccini’s masterpiece, Madame Butterfly, the tragic tale of a Japanese geisha who falls in love with an American naval officer. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. This sweeping romance is not without its moral dilemmas for modern audiences. Cio-Cio San is a 15-year-old geisha who is sold off as a bride by her family to Lt. Pinkerton of the U.S. Navy. When Pinkerton leaves her behind to head back home to America, many modern audience members feel the injustice of his actions. But Stage Director Sandra Hartman explains that there is much more to the story. These characters live in an era of sexism and prejudice that have not existed in many parts of the world for some time. Marriages in Japan at that time could be entered into lightly, Hartman explained. A marriage broker would ensure that families were paid in exchange for their daughters, and men could easily divorce them. “The story of the opera is based on a true story. Cio-Cio San is basically a mail-order bride. Cio-Cio San’s family didn’t expect Pinkerton to come back for her. But she actually falls in love with him and takes the marriage very seriously. The tragic part of the story is that she won’t listen to anyone who says he won’t come back. It breaks our hearts because she believes in love and marriage, not as it often is with lies and broken promises, but rather as it should be. But who doesn’t want to believe in true love?” The cast includes soprano Laurice Kennel as Cio-Cio San, tenor Doug Rowland as B.F. Cavaliere Named Director of Doctor of Education Program at Neumann eumann University has appointed Lorraine A. Cavaliere, EdD, director of its doctor of education program. A resident of Devon, Pennsylvania, Dr. Cavaliere has worked at all levels of the educational spectrum, having taught extensively in higher education as well as at secondary and elementary levels. Before coming to Neumann, she was the founding dean of the School of Education at Gwynedd-Mercy College and dean of Adult and Continuing Education at Cabrini College. She also served as a faculty member in the graduate programs at Cabrini College and Thomas Edison State College, a nontraditional institution of higher education for adult learners. In addition, she has been an adjunct faculty member at The College of New Jersey, Mercer Community College and Rutgers University, specializing in education and teaching methodologies as well as learning and cognition. She is a national consultant on adult learning, working with trainers in education and business. Her training programs and presentations focus on teaching strategies, adult learning behaviors and styles, as well as historical and current research relative to educational practices and learning processes. The doctor of education in educational leadership (EdD) Neumann University has appointed Lorraine A. Cavaliere, at Neumann University is designed to provide educators with EdD, director of its doctor of education program. the capacity to conduct and use research to address educational issues at all levels. Graduates of the program are prepared to demonstrate the leadership to implement school-based action plans, assess the needs and accomplishments of students and faculty, and participate in curriculum development and evaluation. The program is taught at Neumann’s campus in Aston and, by arrangement, at various school districts throughout the region. A distinguishing feature of the program is the emphasis on ethical issues that are relevant to the profession. The Neumann EdD program -- firmly rooted in the Franciscan philosophy of respect, justice and service -- challenges doctoral students to identify and address issues that raise ethical concerns. “My passion for teaching and learning has been my life’s work,” explained Cavaliere. “I am looking forward to working with the students and faculty at Neumann.” She holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from The College of New Jersey, and earned a doctorate at Rutgers University, completing a dissertation that researched learning behaviors employed outside of institutional settings. August 2 and August 9 at Bryn Mawr College ollowing two successful summer workshops in 2011 and 2012 at Bryn Mawr College, the Cellospeak instrumental choir comprised of more than 80 cellists will again perform two free concerts in Thomas Great Hall on Friday, August 2, and Friday, Au gust 9, at 7:30 p.m. Area residents are invited to attend these extraordinary concerts presented by participants and faculty of Cellospeak’s 13th Annual Cello Workshop for Adults. These free concerts will be the grand finales of two separate week-long workshops for adult amateur cellists. The Concert on August 2 will be a demonstration of the Skill-Builder week, as well as a faculty performance of Respighi Participants of Cellospeak’s 2012 Ensemble Workshop. The Cellospeak instrumental choir “Andante Con Variazioni” arcomprised of more than 80 cellists will again perform two free concerts in Thomas Great ranged by Gary Fitzgerald for Hall on Friday, August 2, and Friday, August 9, at 7:30 p.m. 16 cellos and the Villa Lobos “Bachianas Brazileiras #5” also for 16 players, with Carl Donakowski as the cello soloist and his sister Monica Donakovska as the soprano soloist. On August 9, the entire cello choir under the direction of Conductor Miriam Burns, will perform pieces by Bach, Telemann, Beethoven, Dvorak and a special cello version of the Orange Blossom Special. In addition to a repeat of the work by faculty in a performance of the Respighi, the premier of a brand new edition for cellos of the Tchaikovsky “Serenade for Strings” will be debuted. Founded in 2000 by Artistic Director Dorothy Amarandos with just 13 of her cello students, Cellospeak’s Annual Cello Workshop has grown to over 120 participants and 20 cello professors from across the U.S. who will come together at Bryn Mawr College for one or two weeks of musical study. They share their love of the cello by performing in coached quartets and in Cellospeak’s signature choir. The Workshop offers students opportunities to improve their technical skills, gain exposure to diverse teaching styles and enjoy their own and other’s performances at nightly recitals. NBS Offers Annual Summer Music Camp Some scholarship available for wind, string and brass players rom August 12-16, the Nelly Berman School of Music is offering an outstanding one week-long summer camp for young music students between the ages of 8 and 15 grouped by experience and skill. The daily program (from 8:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with pre- and post-care available) provides high-quality, unparalleled one-on-one attention for up to 25 students. Some scholarship is available to outstanding and hard-working wind, string or brass players by audition only. The program consists of music theory and composition, Broadway and Jazz singing, chamber music, music-related foreign films, practice time and outside activities. Instruments offered include piano, violin, viola, cello, voice, trumpet, trombone, flute and clarinet. Camp participants also take two 30 minute lessons in any instrument on top of the regular camp program. Chamber music opportunities include four-hand piano repertoire, string and piano repertoire, brass and vocal accompaniment. In theory class, students will explore different musical eras, and will be divided into groups to write their own piece in the style of the composer of that era. They will learn about the Baroque style, which is the cornerstone of musical harmonic language, as well as discover how Bach totally transformed the division of the scale into twelve notes with his “Well-tempered Clavier,” the 48 Preludes and Fugues, from which all of our current scales stem from. Older students will write their own Fugue, and the younger students will write a minuet dance. The pieces will be performed at the family concert on Friday afternoon. Participants in this year’s summer camp will also develop poise and confidence by learning Broadway and Jazz songs with our engaging voice teacher. During the week, students will also watch two feature films: “Vitus,” a Swiss film about a piano prodigy, and “Together,” a Chinese film about a young orphan who becomes a great violinist. The Nelly Berman School provides recess and ice cream each day so campers have a chance to relax and interact with one another. The exhibition is on view now through September 22, 2013, and is part of the Art Center’s “Exhibitions in the Community” Program, which places the work of its accomplished artists in libraries, hospitals, and other community settings. Launched this spring, the new program grew out of the Art Center’s mission of making art more accessible by creating meaningful partnerships across the community. This exhibition continues a partnership with Bryn Mawr Hospital that began in February, when Main Line Art Center facilitated a family workshop called “Make, Give and Take,” where children and caregivers learned the fundamentals of printmaking and then created cards that were distributed to pediatric patients at the hospital. The National Constitution Center will award the prestigious Liberty Medal to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for her lifelong career in public service and her ongoing advocacy efforts on behalf of women and girls around the globe. Hillary Rodham Clinton served as the 67th Secretary of State of the United States from January 21, 2009, until February 1, 2013, after nearly four decades in public service as an advocate, attorney, First Lady, and Senator. She is recognized as a champion of human rights, democracy, and opportunities for women and girls around the world. As First Lady, she advocated for universal, affordable health care and led bipartisan efforts to improve the adoption and foster care systems, reduce teen pregnancy, and establish the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Early Head Start. In 2000, Clinton became the first First Lady elected to the Senate. She worked across party lines to expand economic opportunity and access to health care, including for wounded service members, veterans, and members of the National Guard and Reserves. After September 11, 2001, she helped secure more than $20 billion for the rebuilding of New York City and fought for the health needs of first responders. In 2007 and 2008, Clinton made her historic campaign for President, winning 18 million votes and more primaries and delegates than any woman had before. As Secretary of State, Clinton demonstrated that women’s rights and human rights are vital to the security, stability, and prosperity of all nations. She spearheaded progress on national security challenges, from reasserting the United States as a Pacific power and imposing sanctions on Iran and North Korea to responding to the Arab Awakening and negotiating a ceasefire in the Middle East. Wong, age 15, is a fingerstyle guitarist from West Windsor, NJ. Wong is currently touring throughout the Tri-State area to promote his debut album, “Fly me to the Moon,” to new audiences. He will bring his high energy show to Philadelphia at the Legendary Dobbs on August 2, 2013 for his Summer 2013 Tour. Matt picked up the guitar at age six and has been playing ever since. He currently focuses on playing what he calls, “fingerstyle,” which allows him to hold down the melody, rhythm, and bass parts simultaneously, while adding a little percussion. Wong was first inspired to play this style when he heard legendary guitarist, Matt Wong is currently touring throughout the Tri-State area to promote his debut album, “Fly me to the Moon” to new audiences.
