Written and directed by Tony Award-winning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleil’s 33rd production AMALUNA is a celebration of love and a tribute to the work and voice of women. AMALUNA invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-ofage ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance, which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next. In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony. AMALUNA is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. AMALUNA is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds.

That’s because McDermott is already an accomplished screenwriter. She optioned two of her feature film screenplays this spring. The first, Still Waters, was optioned to producer Bruce Miles, and the second, Corruptible, to an independent film production company, Mission Ranch Films, which has hired her to direct the movie. Still Waters is a “creature feature,” as McDermott affectionately describes it, about an alligator in the bayou who begins to feed on people after its food source is wiped out. Corruptible, “still a working title,” said McDermott, is a dark, philosophical thriller about a man and woman who meet on a cross-state drive. “This amazing script almost fell from the sky,” McDermott adds. She said it was the fastest she ever wrote a screenplay, completing it in only a few hours. The Wallingford native also wrote the screenplay for the

About Friends of Historic Sedgeley Friends of Historic Sedgeley was formed in 2012 to maintain and preserve the Sedgeley Lighthouse and its surrounding boathouse as a local and national historic landmark and to promote the architectural and cultural significance of the structures to the public through open houses and education programs. The lighthouse, first called “the Light on Turtle Rock” when it was constructed in 1887 by Frank Thurwanger, cost under $3,000 to complete and marked the bend in the Schuylkill River for navigators at the turn of the century. The City of Philadelphia later allowed the women of Sedgeley Club to construct a boathouse around the lighthouse tower, with the understanding that the women would become keepers of the light. In 1987, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the lighthouse, Sedgeley Club members paid for a complete structural and electrical renovation of the Lighthouse at a cost of over $40,000. In 2014, she founded The Princeton Independent Film Festival (Prindie), the mission of which is to promote diversity in film by showcasing female and minority filmmakers. With McDermott’s leadership and guidance, this event has grown to become a staple on the Princeton community calendar. Due to the success of the festival, she has also been invited to develop and deliver presentations for Princeton’s film community, as part of both the Princeton University Film Forum and the Princeton Festival. McDermott has won awards, too. Recently, she came in second (among almost 800 entrants) in the 2019 Emerging Screenwriters ‘Get it Made’ Competition. In 2012, her short drama Chance (based on a chance encounter of former lovers in Grand Central Station) won the Achievement in Short Film Award at the Williamsburg International Film Festival and the Director’s Choice Award at the Digital Film Academy’s New Filmmakers’ Screening in New York City. “Audiences expect a format,” she said, analyzing the popularity of her work. “With everything I write, I take into consideration the audience and ask myself, ‘Who is this movie for?’” Always in perpetual motion, McDermott will continue to stay busy this summer. She’s been hired to write two film scripts and is working on a feature documentary about emotional abuse, a topic she feels strongly about. Then, this fall, she will be back behind the podium at Neumann, offering professional advice to budding screenwriters.

Gallery hours are Wednesday - Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. Muse Gallery’s phone number is 215-627-5310. Visit http://musegalleryphiladelphia.com. Passages is an exhibition of oil and acrylic paintings which are a transition between Plough’s large, simple color field paintings and smaller, more figurative landscapes. Many of the pieces depict a way of exit or entrance, a road, or pathway. Several works refer directly to traveling, either physically or psychologically, while others involve the motion or energy involved in transit. The term ‘passage,’ utilized as a noun or a verb, contains multitudes, and this exhibition is meant to be in conversation with all of those therein. A throughway, a brief precipice from one place to another, one’s permission to enter, one’s permission to exit, one’s choice or right to proceed or move forward—they’re all encompassed by the title of the exhibition. Join Plough in this examination of the psychology of landscapes and passageways; these paintings contain multitudes. Jean Plough states, “Land and space inform my work. The natural world can be seen and experienced as vivid and beautiful, and inspires us in ways we don’t understand. My work has two sources: the physical experience of landscape and the outdoors, and the felt sense of practicing meditation.” Born in New York, Plough studied painting at the University of the Arts, and she also spent time at the Corcoran Gallery School in Washington, DC, where she took part in Insomnia, Landscapes of the Night at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. “I paint because it allows me to communicate with people, it creates a new perspective, and conveys a sense of place,” Jean Plough remarked. “I’m in touch with a beautiful landscape or piece of art. They’re intangible and powerful, but leave a felt impression that lingers with us in memory,” said Jean Plough. In 1977, statistics showed that while 60% of students in American art schools were women only 2% of these trained artists ever showed in galleries. It was that year that Muse Gallery opened its doors as Philadelphia’s only professional Women’s art gallery. Muse was also the first women’s cooperative gallery in the city.

Photo/Mike Servedio/ANS pider-Man got nothin’ on Bug Fest. The action hero may be impressing moviegoers with his latest flick, but the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University has the real thing—live spiders and hundreds more insects. Bug Fest, Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11, is the Academy’s annual festival of live insects, roach races, bugtastings, goo-making, bed-bug-sniffing dogs, and Academy experts to explain the secret life of bugs. Look for an amazing variety of millipedes, centipedes, scorpions, stick insects, caterpillars, tarantulas, beetles, ants, butterflies, and, of course, spiders. “We’ll have more than 100 species of live insects on display for our visitors to examine up close, and our knowledgeable staff will be on hand to explain what they are seeing,” said Academy invertebrate keeper and Bug Fest organizer Karen Verderame. “It’s a fun way for people of all ages to learn how important insects are in our daily life. The more we all know, the more success we’ll have for a sustainable future.” Despite the more than one million insects that scientists have already identified, experts estimate there are millions more to be discovered. Academy entomologists, who maintain an active research collection of 3.5 million insect specimens, will lead walks outside of the museum in search of insects and also show specimens from the collection. Visitors are encouraged to bring their questions about invasive species such as lanternflies and ash borer beetles, and even how Spider-Man’s powers compare to his namesake. According to Academy entomologist Isa Betancourt, the superhero’s senses are pretty close to the real thing. “Spider-man has many of the powers that real spiders possess, but there are more! If all the spiders’ super abilities were combined, the resulting superhero would be near impossible to defeat,” said Betancourt, whose weekly BugScope attracts a large following on the Periscope app. Bug Fest is sponsored by Western Pest Services and Renewal by Andersen. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Discount tickets and details are available online at www.ansp.org.

mieres, poignant artist discussions, and discover new cinematic favorites from this year’s class of emerging filmmakers. Founded in 2012 by Maori Karmael Holmes, BlackStar has become one of the hottest events on the film festival calendar. With a program unlike any other, BlackStar is the destination to discover new artists voices from Black and global indigenous filmmakers. Artists including Terence Nance (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty; HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness), and Matthew A. Cherry (9 Rides; ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier), and Nijla Baseema Mu’min (Jinn) have shared their work at the festival and from BlackStar cultivated a fanbase that has grown with their careers. “BlackStar is a home for filmmakers who take risks and produce work that is edgy and blurs the lines,” says Holmes. “We strive to grow a community around these filmmakers that cultivates their careers, their work, and their audiences. That’s the true essence of BlackStar – connection and opportunity.” Celebrating that legacy of supporting filmmakers and cultivating new voices, BlackStar will present the Luminary Award to Marcia Smith, President of Firelight Media; a nonprofit production company dedicated to using historical film to advance contemporary social justice causes, and to mentoring, inspiring and training a new generation of diverse young filmmakers committed to advancing underrepresented stories. “I have been a quiet fan girl of Marcia for quite a few years. Her work as a producer, cultural worker, and overall boss has been a major inspiration.” said Holmes. “Firelight as an institution is a northern light for me and so many of my peers and so much of this is due to Marcia’s tireless and innovative efforts in partnership with Stanley Nelson.” This year the festival kicks off with Jezebel, written and directed by Numa Perrier. This narrative feature, based on a true story, follows 19-year-old Tiffany (Tiffany Tenille), during the last days of her dying mother’s life. As Tiffany tries to make ends meet her older sister, a phone sex operator, introducers her the internet fetish cam world. Perrier, who also stars in the film, will have a special filmmaker Q&A to follow the film screening. Additional film highlights include: • The North American premiere of Test Pattern, a narrative feature directed by Shatara Michelle Ford; with performances from Brittany S. Hall, Will Brill, Gail Bean and more. Test Pattern is set against the backdrop of our national discussion about an inequitable health system, #metoo, and race relations in America. We follow an interracial couple in Austin, TX whose relationship is put to the test as they go from hospital to hospital in search of a Rape Kit. • The world premiere of Hip-Hop: The Songs That Shook America, a new documentary series directed by directed Erik Parker and One9. From Executive Producers Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, Shawn Gee, and Alex Gibney, each episode of the series focuses on a groundbreaking song pivotal to the evolution of American music and culture. Artists deconstruct their composition, revisit the impact the song had on them personally, and dissect the socio-economic and cultural conditions that inspired the landmark work and gave voice to a generation. • The North American premiere of Titixe, directed by Tania Hernández Velasco. In this documentary feature Velasco intimately turns the camera onto her own family, as they strive to cultivate the land in rural Mexico and continue the family legacy without their patriarch. • The Philadelphia premiere of Fear No Gumbo, a documentary feature directed by Kimberly Rivers Roberts. 13 years since the deadly Category 5 Hurricane Katrina that made landfall on Florida and Louisiana, the film tours through New Orleans’ 9th Ward, as Roberts questions and sometimes confronts the “culture vultures” who have swooped into the

neighborhood, alongside examples of corruption and systemic racism that still victimizes the residents that returned after Katrina. • Special presentation of Boss, a documentary feature directed Emmy Award-winning director and Macarthur “genius” fellow, Stanley Nelson (The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution; Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities). Boss explores over 150 years of African American entrepreneurship, from bondage to billion dollar moguls. • The Philadelphia premiere of The Apollo, a documentary feature from Academy Award-winning director, Roger Ross Williams (Music By Prudence, God Loves Uganda). The Apollo chronicles the unique history and contemporary legacy of New York City’s landmark Apollo Theater. While uncovering the rich history of the internationally renowned theater that has influenced American music and culture for 85 years, it also examines the current state of race in America. Nehad Khader, BlackStar’s Senior Program Director, says, “BlackStar as a festival is directed by a clear vision that encompasses aesthetic excellence, new conversations about justice, and pushing boundaries—always pushing boundaries. We hope this comes across in the programming this year and every year.” An annual festival favorite is BlackStar’s lineup of short film programming, which showcases an eclectic mix of documentary, narrative, live action and animation/experimental short films. The short program also feature works from youth directors. Must-see short films and music videos at this year’s fest include: • The world premiere of Kevin Beasley’s Raw Materials, a narrative short directed by Christine Turner. The film follows centers Queens-based artist Kevin Beasley as he juxtaposes sound, silence, and sculpture to explore the personal and historic legacy of cotton in the American South. • The world premiere of four documentaries on racquet sports: South Oxford, All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club, Maravilla, Serve, directed by Darius Clark Monroe. This documentary short utilizes archival and original materials to examine the role of sports in American culture. Monroe also sheds light on the lives of players and club owners as well as the unexpected communities, obsessions, and passions they have built around tennis and handball. • The Philadelphia premiere of As Told To G/d Thyself, directed by: The Ummah Chroma (Bradford Young, Terence Nance, Jenn Nkiru, Marc Thomas & Kamasi Washington). The narrative short film tells the story of the sacred youth and the stakes of a cosmic journey. Where the embodiment and the pain, pleasure and sublimation there-in are non-negotiable. The 2019 BlackStar Film Festival is generously supported by John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, William Penn Foundation, Cinereach, Wyncote Foundation, Color of Change & Open Society Foundations, HBO, Barra Foundation, Annenberg School for Communication at University of Pennsylvania, PECO, Comcast/Xfinity, Crux, Fractured Atlas, and individual donors; as well as a gracious network of partners including Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, The Barnes Foundation, Institute of Contemporary Art, Lightbox Film Center, Pearlstein Gallery at Drexel University, and World Cafe Live, as well as a generous host of individual donors, members, media and community partners. BlackStar will take place in various venues across Philadelphia. For information on the film details, tickets, attending filmmakers, and special receptions, visit www.BlackStar.org.

Jamey’s House of Music – Lansdowne Hidden Gem with a World-Class Reputation

Check out Jamey’s House of Music, Livehouse & Café, at 32 S. Lansdowne Avenue, Lansdowne PA 19050. or two years, Jamey’s House of Music has quietly been building a devoted following of music and food lovers by word of mouth, one fan at a time. Located in an unassuming storefront in downtown Lansdowne, next to the train station, Jamey’s presents one the finest sound systems of any small club, in a comfortable, intimate livehouse and café setting designed by the owner Jamey Reilly. Reilly defines livehouse as a small live music club concept which originated in Japan. The term is a Japanese coinage (wasei eigo) and is mainly used in China, Japan and South Korea. It most frequently refers to smaller venues, which may double as restaurants or bars, especially featuring rock, jazz, blues, and folk music. He says the East Asian concept has been tailored to the tastes of a discerning western audience. It is a new incarnation for a venerable Philadelphia nightspot, the PSALM Salon, which the Reillys ran for ten years. Jamey’s House of Music is a superbly crafted acoustically balanced 80-seat venue for listening to live music set in a comfortable, world class BYOB café. Jamey’s House of Music (JHOM) serves a modestly priced, freshly

Guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine now, but Jamey’s is in the process of applying for a liquor license to be able to serve beer and wine as well. Jamey’s features concerts on most Friday and Saturday evenings, and has popular First Sunday Blues Brunch – Blues Jam Sessions hosted by the Philly Blues Kings. JHOM is also the home venue for the Philly Blues Society. Jamey’s is fully wheelchair accessible, has free WiFi, and boasts plenty of free local parking. The concert calendar features an eclectic mix of top quality local, regional, national and international touring artists who can’t wait to perform at this professionally appointed venue. The club was founded and is run by owners Jamey and Suyun Reilly, and their son, Weijun Chen. Suyun and Jun are professional chefs with a long history in restaurant hospitality, and may be found in Jamey’s kitchen preparing the mouthwatering menu for guests’ delight and enjoyment. Jamey, who has decades of experience in the music business, and as a musician, is always front of house, greeting guests, caring for the artists, and running the amazing sound system. Their guiding principle is to be the best for artists and guests. More information on this hidden gem of a music venue and café may be found on their website at www.jameyshouseofmusic.com, as well as a menu and full concert calendar with ticket links. See performances of Upper Darby Summer Stage’s production of “Big Fish” August 2, 3, 9, 10. Mainstage cast members, from left – Chris Monaco (Edward Bloom) of Drexel Hill; Malik Muhammad (Amos Calloway) of Drexel Hill; Sarah DeNight (Sandra Bloom) of Philadelphia; Chris Murphy Smith (Will Bloom) of Philadelphia. Photo/Jim Mergliano pper Darby Summer Stage presents the pinnacle of its season, the Mainstage production Big Fish, a highly fanciful and feel-good new musical about fatherhood, family, and forgiveness. Performances take place on August 2, 3, 9, 10 at 7:30 p.m. and August 10 at 1:30 p.m. at Upper Darby Performing Arts Center, 601 N. Lansdowne Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA. Tickets range from $16 to $20 and may be purchased at www.udpac.org or by calling the box office at 610-622-1189. Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest … and then some. Big Fish tells the tale of Edward Bloom (Chris Monaco of Drexel Hill), a man with a big heart and an even bigger imagination. Edward’s son, Will (Chris Murphy Smith of Philadelphia), has grown up on his father’s stories of kissing a mermaid, befriending a giant and meeting Will’s mother, Sandra (Sarah DeNight of Philadelphia) at a circus. However, now a grown man recently married and expecting a child with his wife, Josephine (Sabrina Follo of Springfield), Will has grown out of such tall tales. Will simply does not accept these stories and finds that he is drifting farther and farther away from his father. Is it possible for Will to accept Edward before his life is cut short or will their relationship simply flop? Big Fish reels in audiences of all ages through the magic of storytelling as Edward’s tales come to life on stage. John Fioravanti of Conshohocken plays the larger than life giant, Karl, while Rachel Medori of Drexel Hill and Malik Muhammad of Drexel Hill play a witch and a circus ringmaster turned werewolf. Edward’s adventurous stories entertain while revealing a greater truth about his life and his big heart. Overflowing with heart, humor and spectacular stagecraft, Big Fish is a musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre – for an experience that’s richer, funnier and bigger than life itself. Performances are approximately 2.5 hours, including intermission. Parking is free. For more information about Big Fish and Upper Darby Summer Stage’s 44th season visit www.udpac.org. Since 1976 Upper Darby Summer Stage has presented a spectacular, full-scale musical Mainstage production. Aspiring actors ages 18-28 have the opportunity to audition. Mainstage members rehearse in the evenings during the summer, beginning in early June and culminating in performances in early August. The Mainstage productions at Summer Stage have received outstanding reviews from press and patrons alike. Professional set, lighting, costume designers and full orchestra add to the magic each year. The heart, dedication, and passion of the actors make each show unforgettable. The Upper Darby Performing Arts Center and Upper Darby Summer Stage are jointly sponsored by Upper Darby Township Mayor and Council and the Upper Darby School District Board of School Directors through the Department of Recreation and Leisure Services.
