Photo/Daniel Kontz by Anonymous, from June 6 to June 24, 2018, at The Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake. A tale of love, revenge and murder with a village idiot and the epitome of all villains, this show will make you boo, hiss, guffaw and cheer. Dastardly deeds, family forgiveness and a Gypsy’s curse all lead to one blisteringly ridiculous climax in the highest style of the Victorian melodramas. Only the highest of the low for PAC, Co-Founders Dan Hodge and Damon Bonetti will trade the roles of the idiot and the villain each performance for a truly outrageous night in the theatre. Which will play the villain on opening night? Audiences can cast their vote and help decide ahead of the show. Maria Marten will be directed by Charlotte Northeast. The role of Maria will be played by PAC newcomer Victoria Goins, who has appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, America’s Got Talent, and The Voice. Previews for Maria Marten run June 6 and 7, with opening night and press opening on June 8. The show runs for a total of 13 performances through June 24, 2018. BETSY ROSS HOUSE PREPARES FOR 11TH ANNUAL FLAG FEST Weeklong Celebration Features Activities for the Whole Family he Betsy Ross House’s Flag Festival starts off its second decade with a full week of fun, free activities June 10-16 that promise entertainment for all ages and tastes. By adding evening events to the week’s schedule, organizers hope to widen the Festival’s audience and appeal. So, for the 11th annual celebration, family events will be featured during the day and Wednesday through Friday evening the courtyard will play host to new events including a concert, beer garden and movie night. The Betsy Ross House hosted its first Flag Day event on June 14, 1891 and has long been the site of the city’s official commemoration. In 2008, the star -spangled celebrations of the early 19th century were revived and, since then, the House has hosted a full slate of events, spanning all of National Flag Week. Flag Fest 2018 gets underway Sunday, June 10 when Betsy Ross, herself, raises the flag in the House’s courtyard to kick off the festivities. A Colonial chocolate making demonstration starts things off and the celebration of all things Old Glory continues all week with free activities each day, including a brand-new chocolate making program just for kids, the chance to meet George Washington and more. Flag Day events begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 14 with a flag raising and the reading of a Mayoral Proclamation commemorating the day. Guests are treated to free admission to the House all day, courtesy of Dr. Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn. The “Flag Ladies” of the Defense Logistics Agency will be on hand embroidering the Presidential flags they make right here in Philadelphia. The day also includes a moving naturalization ceremony, sponsored by the Philadelphia Flag Day Association, welcoming 13 new America citizens. This year, the Flag Fest fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. On Wednesday, June 13, visitors are invited to bring their own beverages and snacks and enjoy a free, al fresco jazz performance. On June 14, starting at 6 p.m., relax in the courtyard while sipping on craft beer at the Little Rebel Beer Garden presented by Devil’s Den. The nighttime events wrap up in exciting fashion on Friday, June 15, when guests are again invited to BYOB for a screening of the 2017 blockbuster, “Wonder Woman.” The week wraps up with the popular Stars & Stripes Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 16. This all-day family event features favorites like The Give & Take Jugglers and the amazing Funicular Aerial Circus, which awes the crowd with acrobats who fly through the air high above the House’s courtyard. Peter Pitchford’s Magic Show and Dr. Horn’s Punch & Judy puppet show also return. Plus, take patriotic portraits at the “selfie station” and share them with the hashtag #BRHFlagFest2018. Enjoy old-time carnival games and stories told by the Once Upon A Nation Storytellers. Admission is FREE and tours of the House are just $5 for adults and $4 for children. For more details about Stars & Stripes Saturday and Flag Festival, visit www.historicphiladelphia.org. Flag Festival is the 21st century incarnation of the first Flag Day celebrations held at the House in the 1890s. The ninth annual event pays tribute to our national standard and honors the tradition of Flag Day celebrations that began here more than 100 years ago, and resumed with the first modern Flag Festival in 2008. The Betsy Ross House is open extended hours 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from June 10 to July 31. Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for children/students/seniors/active military. An optional audio guide is $7 and $6, which includes admission. The Betsy Ross House is managed by Historic Philadelphia, Inc. For information, call 215629-4026 or visit www.historicphiladelphia.org.

2018 P HILADELPHIA C ONCOURS D ’E LEGANCE

Fundraising Event Supports Children with Rare Birth Disorders, and Their Families f the name Mike Tillson sounds familiar, you probably love classic and exotic automobiles and might even own one. Or maybe you have attended the Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance, or the premier Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance presented last year by Cool Cars for Kids. Tillson founded Tillson Motorcars in Overbrook, PA, more than 35 years ago and has a long and storied history in the car collector world. He has merged his classic car passion with the mission of Cool Cars for Kids to increase awareness of the issues faced by children with developmental disorders and birth defects. He is responsible for bringing the Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance into existence to benefit The Children’s Hospital and is preparing to welcome guests to the second annual event on Father’s Day weekend, June 16. The event will be held at the world-class Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia with a Preview Gala the evening before. A one-time international racer and car builder, Tillson began his career crafting custom bodies with the Derman Body Co. in Rosemont, PA, and later with Algar Ferrari. Currently, Tillson and his team compete in major exhibition and motor racing events both here and abroad, including the Mille Miglia in Rome. He is also the founder and chairman of the very successful Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance. Tillson’s company has restored and shown cars at every major Concours d’Elegance in the U.S., where he often serves as a judge. His personal car collection includes an eclectic assortment of sports, racing, European and American Classic automobiles, making him eminently qualified to seek out the rarest and most sought-after American and European classic and historic automobiles for the upcoming June 16 Philadelphia Concours. “We are literally adding cars to the exhibition right up to the 11th hour,” said Tillson. “Getting just the right mix of historic, classic, sports and performance racing cars is extremely challenging. And many of these rare collections are committed years in advance for other invitational events around the country so logistically it can sometimes be more stressful than driving a race car!” As always though, Tillson has made it across the finish line, putting together a rare assembly of 35 American and European classic and historic automobiles for the 2018 Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance, including a 1910 Pierce-Arrow, a 1967 Bizzarrini V-12 P538, and a 1958 Studebaker Golden Hawk Hardtop Coupe. 2018 Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance The 2018 Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance takes place on Saturday, June 16, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum, 6825 Norwitch Dr., Philadelphia, PA 19153. Public admission, $25; FREE for students and children under 18. Presented by the nonprofit Cool Cars for Kids, Inc. (CCfK), the Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance benefits the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in providing help and hope to children with rare birth disorders and their families, and to support research that will identify the best possible treatments. The second annual Philadelphia Concours d’Elegance will showcase an invitation-only assembly of 35 American and European classic and historic automobiles and race cars. This year’s classes are: Open Cars, Closed Cars, Prewar Cars, Postwar Cars, Sports Cars, and Muscle Cars. able by calling 215-413-9006 or visiting www.philartistscollective.org. This show is presented with support from Honorary Producer Louis Bluver. Maria Marten, or, The Murder in the Red Barn, is a classic melodrama based on a real life murder that took place back in 1827 in Polstead, Suffolk, England. Maria Marten was a young woman who was thought to have been shot dead by her lover William Corder. After fleeing the scene following a rendezvous, Corder was tracked down in London, brought back to Suffolk and found guilty. He was hanged in front of thousands of people back in 1828. Corder’s much publicized trial received widespread attention. It is thought that a group of theatremakers and playwrights wrote the play in the 1860s to 1880s. The play went on to become a sensational, over-the-top hit throughout the mid-19th century and may have been the most performed play of the time. The fascination with the story continued into the 20th century with five film versions. Now, in their tradition of bringing classical long-forgotten works back to the stage, Philadelphia Artists’ Collective will bring this melodrama to the stage for your consideration. Booing, cheering, hissing—come ready, as it is all encouraged. “Maria Marten and the classic melodrama is not the type of play most modern audiences have see,” said Northeast. “My challenge in directing is to find how a modern audience will view the over-the-top notions in the script. I want to embrace that world and break the fourth wall to make the show accessible to the audience. But I want to also acknowledge the ridiculousness of the situations on stage. We will have a live piano player serve as the guide for the show and give the audience agency to boo, hiss and things audiences in the 1880s used to do naturally. Listen for the music to get fast or slow to add to the tension and enhance the drama.” PAC and Northeast will add to the unsullied, hearty fun by featuring two actors, and PAC favorites, play the role of the villain and the idiot. “Each night, we will have our two CoFounding Artistic Directors Dan and Damon swap roles. While the rest of the cast will remain the same, look for surprises and different bits during the run. Audiences will really have to come out and see the show for both nights to get the complete theatrical experience.” Northeast added, “Dan originally found this play and has been sitting on it for a while. I read the script and loved it—and I knew he wanted to play the villain. I then knew that Damon would want to play the villain. I couldn’t of course have our two founders audition for the role. The idea then came to me to have them both play the villain. They both would have to learn two roles—and this really gives them the opportunity to show off their talents. This is only the second time they have both been on stage together in the same play.” While Northeast found a way to have both Bonetti and Hodge play the villains, there can only be one villain on opening night. PAC’s solution was to have a vote and competition through donations on Facebook and the PAC website. The audience will find out the winner when they arrive in the theater. “I sensed some competition for who would play the vil-

lain for the show’s opening. We thought we would have some fun with it and I liked the idea of involving the audience. It adds an added layer of engagement, mystery and fun,” said Northeast. When asked what message she wants audiences to leave with, Northeast said, “While I want to punch up the ridiculousness of this play, I want audiences to realize we haven’t changed much. We think we are so advanced and have come a long way, but we aren’t much different than audiences back in the 1800s. We look up Kim Kardashian on our phones, watch reality TV, read tell-all books and idolize celebrities. We all still love salacious non-sense and gossip, and we forget that these are real people. Maria was a real person. Do we change? Will we change? We haven’t. We have just changed how we get our stories.” Maria Marten, or, The Murder in the Red Barn, is directed by the Barrymore Award winner Northeast (Creditors and The Fair Maid of the West), and stars Hodge (PAC’s The White Devil, The Fair Maid of the West, Creditors, Changes of Heart, and created his one man The Rape of Lucrece) and Bonetti (PAC’s The Duchess of Malfi, Creditors and All’s Well That Ends Well) switching roles as William Corder/Tim Bobbin; Victoria Goins (EgoPo’s Lydie Breeze Trilogy, Temple’s For Colored Girls and The Colored Museum) making her PAC debut as Maria Marten; Monroe Barrick (PAC’s All’s Well That Ends Well) playing Mister Marten and Ishmael Lee; Sarah Knittel (Hedgerow, AntiGravity Theatre Project, Pig Iron, Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium, and Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre) making her PAC debut as Anne; Devon Sinclair (Walnut Street Theatre, Theatre Horizon, Ritz Theatre) making his PAC debut playing Jacko/Pharos; and Trina Tjersland (Delaware Theatre Company’s Our Town, Philadelphia Theatre Company’s Wings) making her PAC debut playing Dame Marten/Flatcatcher. The cast will be rounded out by Brian McCann who will play double duty. On-stage McCann will play Tobersloper/Mark and off-stage he will serve as Set Designer creating roll drops as background scenery. The creative team is rounded out with Nicole Miller (Assistant Director), Robert Thorpe (Lighting Designer), James Lewis (Assistant Lighting Designer), Bridget Brennan (Costume Designer), Andrew Clotworthy (Composer/Musician), Michael Kortsarts (Props Master), Lize Meisenzahl (Stage Manager) and Alexis Cabrera (Assistant Stage Manager). Maria Marten, or, The Murder in the Red Barn, runs from June 6 to June 24, 2018. Preview tickets are $20 for general public, $10 for students and $10 for industry members. Tickets for general admission are $25, $15 for students and $15 for industry members. Tickets are available at philartistscollective.org or by phone at 267-521-2210. Performances for this production will take place The Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake (302 Hicks Street, Philadelphia, 19102). This production marks the first time Philadelphia Artists’ Collective will produce work at either of the theatres located at The Drake.

new blockbusters in recent years, breaking 12 New Amsterdam Theatre house records and welcoming over seven million people worldwide. Its global footprint has expanded to include productions in Tokyo, Hamburg, London and Brisbane, in addition to the two U.S. productions. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher, the show features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Sister Act), lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida) and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Beguelin, and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Aladdin, adapted from the Academy Award®-winning animated Disney film and centuriesold folktales including “One Thousand and One Nights,” is brought to fresh theatrical life in this bold new musical. Aladdin’s journey sweeps audiences into an exotic world of daring adventure, classic comedy and timeless romance. This new production features a full score, including the five cherished songs from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and more written especially for the stage. The animated film Aladdin was released by Disney in 1992 and was a critical and box office smash, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. The film won the Oscar for Best Original Score and introduced the hit song “A Whole New World,” which won the second of the film’s two Academy Awards as Best Original Song. The Peabo Bryson/Regina Belle recording of the tune soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Aladdin is designed by seven-time Tony-winning scenic designer Bob Crowley, six-time Tonywinning lighting designer Natasha Katz, two-time Tony-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes and sound designer Ken Travis. The production team also includes illusion designer Jim Steinmeyer, hair designer Josh Marquette and makeup designer Milagros Medina-Cerdeira. The music team is headed by music supervisor and music director Michael Kosarin, who also created the vocal and incidental music arrangements, joined by orchestrator Danny Troob and dance music arranger Glen Kelly. n Saturday, June 16, Iron Age Theatre and the Norristown NAACP will celebrate the freeing of the slaves in a theatrically dynamic way. The fifth Norristown Juneteenth event will take guests on a walking tour of downtown Norristown with a series of stops where professional actors from the region will present scenes, monologues or historical documents accenting the theme of freedom and slavery. The hour long tours begin at Five Saints Distillery at 129 E. Main Street in Norristown from 10 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. with a tour leaving every 20 minutes. This free event will include a walking tour led by members of the Norristown NAACP. Along the tour route, guides will highlight additional prominent locations of culture, history, and community that are not directly part of the tour. This teaming of professional actors, local businesses, community activists and historical locations make for an educational experience that touches both the performers and the audience. It is recommended that visitors reserve a time slot. This celebration includes performances which speak to the head and the heart. This immersive theatrical experience puts the audience in arms reach from the performers. Figures like Malcom X, Angela Davis, Ida B. Wells, and Sekou Sundiata will be brought to life. The production has met with audience and critical acclaim each year. Juneteenth is the celebration of the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865 and as of that reading, the last slaves in the nation had heard the document and were freed. John Doyle, designer and director of the production, stated, “Our actors are passionate and talented. The event has an ensemble feel with actors returning year after year to bring more of our shared history to life. I love working with them and their commitment to their craft and the material is thrilling.” The cast includes Richard Bradford, Maurice Tucker, Walter De Shields, Niya Colbert, Carlo Campbell, and Nastassja Beset. Tucker appeared in the recent film, “IV Degrees.” Bradford is one of the most active black actors in the region and recently won best actor at the Pittsburgh Fringe for his portrayal of Fred Hampton in “To My Unborn Child” which he wrote and is a member of both Theatre in the X and Curio Theatre. Niya Colbert is a member of Theatre in the X and has appeared in the recent Black Panther Project. John Doyle, Artistic Director of Iron Age Theatre, stated “Bringing actors into the streets is invigorating.” The NAACP Adult and Youth Members will share a bit of Norristown’s History during the walk, which covers about eight blocks across downtown near the Montgomery County Courthouse. Ernie Hadrick of the Norristown NAACP, stated “This is a chance for the fulfillment of a dream. To bring people to our town and expose them to the exciting places could not be better for the town. Our rich history deserves to be accessed.” Norristown businesses are keeping special hours on June 16 to provide post or pre-tour refreshments. Diva’s Kitchen, Five Saints Distillery, Timshel Coffee and other establishments will offer places to reflect on the tour, celebrate emancipation or just get refreshments after the walk. Ebenezer Methodist Church is providing a van to help the audiences return to the beginning of the tour route after the piece is complete. The event is supported by a variety of local sponsors. The support from the community makes it possible to offer the event for free. Norristown NAACP, Montco Today, The Elmwood Park Zoo, ACLAMO, and the Norristown Chamber of Commerce have all donated to assure black history is alive in Norristown. The past years’ Juneteenth tours have focused on the idea of freedom that grew from emancipation and the suffering and rage that came from the slave experience. These emotionally potent presentations can be viewed on the Iron Age Theatre website: www.ironagetheatre.org. Rather than a rushed automotive tour, the sponsors decided to take people through town at a slower pace. Hadrick commented “Walking through Norristown will assure people have the time to see the beautiful architecture around our downtown.” Although this is a walking tour and could be a challenge for people with disabilities, the route is adaptable for a person using a wheelchair. Iron Age Theatre has been one of the most critically acclaimed companies in the area for over fifteen years.
