Act II Playhouse Presents the New East Village Walking Tour to Bring Visitors to More Romantic Comedy Kalamazoo, Than 35 Sites Featured in Popular Films and TV July 9 - Aug. 4, 2019 ho doesn’t love a little summer romance? Act II Playhouse presents the romantic comedy Kalamazoo, by Michelle Kholos Brooks and Kelly Younger, on stage July 9 - August 4 in Ambler. When Peg and Irv try online dating, they discover love isn’t any easier the second time around. A riotous comedy about life’s second act, Kalamazoo is “funny and relatable and surprising,” says director Mary Carpenter. “I love the humanity of the play, as well as the unpredictability,” Carpenter said. “Just when you think it’s going to go one way, it surprises you. And the characters feel like fully fledged human beings who are fascinating to get to know.” Kalamazoo stars legendary Philadelphia actress Carla Belver as Peg. Belver previously graced Act II’s stage in Driving Miss Daisy and The Glass Menagerie, and is known for her role in the classic film Dead Poets Society. Belver was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Philadelphia Barrymore Awards. Jack Hoffman, who appeared in such films as Lovely Bones, The Runaway Bride, and M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village, stars as Irv. Tickets for Kalamazoo at Act II Playhouse are $26-43. Discounts are available for subscribers, students, group of 10 or more, and seniors (65+). Tickets are available online at http://www.act2.org, by calling the Act II box office at 215654-0200, or in person at 56 E. Butler Ave. in Ambler. Watching Kalamazoo, “older audiences will see themselves on stage as main characters, not just the wise grandparent or curmudgeon,” Carpenter said. “Younger audiences will also see themselves in the experiences of these characters – two people risking vulnerability in the search for connection and recognition,” Carpenter added. “At the same time, they will realize that the experiences of people older are unique but not vastly different from what younger people go through in the wild world of dating.”

World’s Best Crabcakes Tony & Emmy Award® winner John Leguizamo’s hilarious one-man show “Latin History for Morons” will be at the at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20, 2019. Photo/Matthew Murphy and 3,000 years of history – from conquistadores to cumbia, Montezuma to Menudo, and taking on the characters in all of it – he uncovers provocative truths that shock even him. “John Leguizamo is a theatrical powerhouse whose skill at blending social relevancy into art is unparalleled,” said Ed Cambron, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “He has also built a career around breaking down stereotypes, using humor to spur audience interest in relevant issues facing the Latin community today. We are committed to presenting programming on our Cultural Campus with artists from varied backgrounds, reflecting the diverse tapestry of Philadelphia audiences.” The critically-acclaimed Latin History for Morons marks Leguizamo’s sixth one-man venture onto the stage. The play is inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American History books. After a sold-out run at The Public Theater and a record-breaking engagement at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the show wowed Broadway audiences with an extended run at Studio 54. Touted as one of the most incisive, insightful, and entertaining personalities on stage today, John Leguizamo’s decadeslong career spans stage and screen. In addition to his success on Broadway with his array of brilliant solo productions, Leguizamo has featured in many film roles such as Casualties of War, Die Hard II, Super Mario Bros, and a Golden Globe nominated performance in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. In more recent years, he has been most widely recognized for his roles in Moulin Rouge!, the John Wick franchise, and as the voice of Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age franchise. His plethora of professional fortunes on Broadway include Mambo Mouth, Spic-O-Rama, Freak, Sexaholix…a Love Story, and Ghetto Klown. Tickets are on sale now starting at $39. and she is responsible for developing Achievement House’s drone education curriculum. Preparing for the FAA exam gave Farr an understanding of drone laws and inspired her to develop courses to prepare Achievement House students to become licensed. The curriculum launched during the 2018-2019 school year, and she is considering adding courses in the upcoming school year that will offer more choices in the area of drone technology in which they are most interested. Farr speaks at industry conferences where she shares her expertise with industry specialists and participates as an attendee to keep up-to-date on the drone sector’s latest developments, trends, and advancements. In March, Farr was a presenter at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – Integrated STEM Education Conference and is scheduled to speak at the Philadelphia Convention Center in June along with other Achievement House teachers at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference, and at a tech conference in July. IEEE, a global organization, is slated to feature in its journal her research about drone education in middle school and high school. The focus of that paper is on engaging nontraditional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) students in drone education. “My conference presentations are designed to enable participants to preview Achievement House’s introductory course so they can experience new ideas for bringing STEM into schools through drones,” Farr said. “There are a lot of options for high achieving STEM students, but public education is not meeting STEM diversity goals by providing sufficient programs to at-risk students. Drone education can be taught in a way that students who learn differently or are from different backgrounds will see connections in their own lives and pursue a STEM career. This is why I am creating a curriculum that can work for all students whether they have disabilities or are advanced. We will be partnering with schools in the 2019-2020 school year who share these goals to continue developing content to engage more diverse thinkers.” Achievement House’s introductory drone course is based on a search and rescue mission involving two Guadeloupe Mountain hikers who are bitten by baby rattlesnakes. The students take on different roles as part of the search and rescue team to save these individuals, which forces them to address limitations and learn new concepts to solve problems. Farr chose this approach because few courses focus on the roles drone can play in serving people including saving lives. “My purpose for our students is to lead them to discover their talents,” Farr said. “Building a game theme into the course enables students to become a character, finding answers and creating solutions becomes relevant.” During the IEEE conference, Farr also presented how the course is taught using the Engineering Design Process. The purpose of this process is to teach students resilience as they work through an iterative process to find a solution. This process teaches them to solve challenges by asking questions, brainstorming, planning, testing their solutions, and improving outcomes. Farr uses these steps to take students through the process of solving the search and rescue mission in their introductory course. “Learning to adhere to a process helps students realize they have not failed if something does not work,” Farr said. “As students progress through these stages, an unanticipated problem can set them back a step—and our students are learning that this is okay. Problems are part of the process. I hope that students will transfer this understanding to any challenge they face. Farr’s goal for the 2019-2020 school year is to get her curriculum mobile. She has received a grant from the SPIE International Society for Optics and Photonics that will enable her to build a mobile STEM/Drone Lab. The lab, equipped with a transportable drone enclosure, commercial grade drones, and specialized drone sensors, will conduct STEM activities to demonstrate how optics have enabled drones to protect communities, provide cost-effective solutions across industries, and save lives. “With a mobile STEM/Drone lab, we can set up at schools, libraries, community centers, and other locations all over the state so students can experience the capabilities of this disruptive technology,” Ms. Farr said. “This is a priority for me. Many underserved communities do not have the resources to introduce new technology to their students. The flexibility of this mobile lab removes these barriers and allows for greater outreach.”

Sarabella’s Thinking Cap. First Sunday for Families: The Art of Stories Sunday, August 4, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; Free all-day admission – Celebrate the art of stories with award-winning artist and illustrator Raúl Colón and performances by Jeannine Osayande & Dunya Performing Arts Company. Find more events and details at www.brandywine.org/museum. Co-organized by the Brandywine River Museum of Art and the Portland Museum of Art (PMA), “N. C. Wyeth: New Perspectives” includes approximately 70 paintings and drawings selected from major museums and private collections. It will be on view at the Brandywine River Museum of Art from June 22 through September 15, 2019. A formidable yet often overlooked figure in the history of American art, N. C. Wyeth was the foremost illustrator of his generation and the patriarch of an extraordinary family of artists. Well known during the 20th century for his bold, imaginative illustrations that brought new characterizations to classic stories such as Treasure Island, The Boy’s King Arthur and The Last of the Mohicans, Wyeth was a prolific artist who vigorously pursued parallel interests in painting landscapes, seascapes, portraits, still lifes, murals and advertising images throughout his career. By repositioning Wyeth as a distinguished painter who worked across the perceived divisions of visual culture, “N. C. Wyeth: New Perspectives” offers new insights on Wyeth’s place within the broad spectrum of early 20th-century visual arts. The Brandywine is the first of three national venues for this exhibition, and visitors coming to Chadds Ford have a unique opportunity to further immerse themselves in both Wyeth’s work and life. N. C. Wyeth’s own home and studio – a National Historic Landmark and the locus of roots which have nourished a family of extraordinary creativity for more than a century – are owned by Brandywine and open for public tours daily. Wyeth’s majestic studio, with its spectacular Palladian-style north window, is much as the artist left it at his untimely death in 1945. The Museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day), and is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford, PA. Admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors ages 65 and over, $6 for students and children ages 6 and up; free for children 5 and younger and Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art members. Guided tours of the N. C. Wyeth House & Studio, Andrew Wyeth Studio, and Kuerner Farm – all National Historic Landmarks – are available daily (for an additional fee) from April 4 through November 18; advance reservations are recommended. For information, call 610-388-2700 or visit www.brandywine.org/museum. The Museum is one of the two programs of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art.

n Friday June 14, New Horizons Senior Center in Narberth hosted its annual Volunteer Recognition and Flag Day Luncheon to honor its exemplary corps of over 160 volunteers that lead all of the Center’s programs and services. The annual event concludes the Center’s 42nd Season of serving local adults 55 and over, helping to keep them active, engaged, social, and independent for as long as possible. The Center’s volunteer-based business model is a unique one, and allows the not-for-profit to provide countless opportunities for older adults to learn, socialize, and maintain their health and wellness. New Horizons Senior Glee Club, an all-volunteer group directed by Mary Eileen Johnston, performed an enthusiastic patriotic program where they took the audience on a colorful American song tour with tunes ranging from “The Yellow Rose of Texas” to “Blue Suede Shoes” and patriotic standards like “America the Beautiful.” The Honorable Mary Jo Daley, State Representative, Past-Narberth Borough Council President and Past New Horizons Board Member presented certificates of appreciation to each volunteer. The event’s special honoree for the year was Dr. James W. Buchanan, BS, DVM, MMS, Professor Emeritus, Cardiology, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
