12th Annual Phila. Region Youth String Music Musicians Concert The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s PRYSM (Philadelphia Region Youth String Music) and PRYSM-YA (PRYSM Young Artists) ensembles will take to the stage for their 12th Annual Festival Concert. The concert will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 3 p.m. and will be held in Cen tennial Hall at the Haverford School, located at 750 Lancaster Avenue in Haverford, PA. PRYSM will perform Tchaikovsky’s Elegy for String Orchestra, Britten’s Simple Symphony and Anderson’s Jazz Pizzicato. PRYSM Young Artists will perform Mozart and Caponegro’s First Movement from Symphony No. 40, as well as Dvořák and Sievig’s “Cavatina” from Romantische Stucke. Both ensembles will join together and perform an arrangement of Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings in C Major. General admission to this event is $15, and free for students under 18 years of age. Main Line Health Auxiliaries Present an Afternoon at the Theatre Since 2007, the combined auxiliaries of the Main Line Health system have joined forces to hold an event every two years to encourage camaraderie and exchange of ideas, and to raise money for Nursing Excellence. The hospitals include Bryn Mawr, Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation, Lankenau Medical Center, Paoli and Riddle. This year’s event on Sunday, May 19, will feature a performance of “Saturday Night Fever” at the Media Theatre in Media, PA. Delaware Valley Iris Society Flower Show The Delaware Valley Iris Society Flower Show will be held Sunday, May 19, 12 4 p.m. at Jenkins Arbore tum & Gardens, 631 Berwyn Baptist Road, Devon, PA 19333. Keeping a Colonial Household: Living History Sunday at Historic Graeme Park Keeping house in colonial times involved many activities we take for granted in today’s world. Lacking modern conveniences, our foremothers did all the washing, sewing, and spinning by hand. Meals were prepared at an open hearth from food grown or raised on the property, and beer and candles had to be produced in large quantities for even a modest-sized household. Join Graeme Park on Sunday May 19 between 12 noon and 3 p.m. for a day of learning about the activities that took place in a colonial household, such as: Hearth Cooking, Spinning & Needlework, Brewing Beer, Washing and Ironing, Tending the KitchenGarden, Candle Dipping, Games & Playtime Activities. The Living History activities on the grounds are free of charge. There is a modest cost of $5/person (12+); $3/child 3-11 to tour the Keith House. This reflects a discount of $1 from the usual $6 cost for 12-64 year-olds. This program is being presented by the Friends of Graeme Park, with the support of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Graeme Park is located at 859 County Line Rd. in Horsham. The conference’s theme, “Find Yourself, Be Yourself,” is a call to action for teens all over Philadelphia to feel comfortable with themselves and to rise above the adverse conditions that surround them while they work towards their goals and dreams. The conference’s aim is to help local teenagers build a sense of identity and help them be better prepared to find solutions to the daily issues they encounter. Through a panel of experts and workshops, participants will leave inspired, educated and supported in their daily lives. As part of the conference’s activities, teen attendees will be broken into workshop groups based on age and the gender they identify with and work together to create and present skits related to the conference’s theme. Keynote Speaker and Performers: Wallo267, a social media powerhouse known for his raw and gritty style and who turned his life around after spending 20 years in prison, will keynote the conference. Wallo267 has been captivating audiences on social media for the past two years and his content is viewed an average of 5.5 million times a week on Instagram. Having grown up in similar living conditions as many of the teens that will attend the conference, Wallo267 will share how he became successful after dealing with setbacks in his life. Project Positive, a Philadelphia based dance organization that uses hip hop to inspire the youth in their community, will open the conference’s program. ÅrÄmØ, uses her passion for music to fulfill her purpose of being the “Voice of the Young People,” and will also perform. All attendees will receive a complimentary light breakfast and lunch, a #RISEandDREAM t-shirt, prizes, including backpacks and wireless speakers, and free admission to the Underground party that will feature performances from various local youth artists following the conference. Uppercut Gym Joins Sydney Harper Foundation’s Fight Against Wilms Disease n New Year’s Day, Uppercut Gym in Narberth challenged members to jump-start a healthy new year by joining a “Healthy Eating Challenge.” The premise was simple: clean up your act or pay – toward a good cause. Gym members were given simple guidelines and a food list to follow. The penalty for consuming a disallowed food or beverage was $5. By the end of the challenge, gym members had lost a total of 268 pounds and raised $1,100 for the Sydney Harper Foundation!

Uppercut Gym offers personal training, small group classes, boxing, and martial arts instruction in a private small group environment for men, women and children of all ages and skill levels. Each year, owner and personal trainer, Rodney Rappe, encourages his clients to take their health and fitness to the next level by participating in the challenge. He believes that by encouraging people to read labels and educate themselves about what they are eating during the month of January, that they will develop the skills needed improve eating habits for the rest of the year. While clients were losing pounds and inches, they still slipped up on occasion and had to pay a penalty. Indulging in a beer, for example, required a $5 contribution to a pot. Rappe, after hearing of the death of three-year-old Sydney Harper from complications of Wilms Disease in 2018, decided to donate this year’s January challenge proceeds to Sydney Harper Foundation. The majority of children who survive their initial cancer diagnosis face significant health-related issues that are most usually side effects from the treatments they received in response to the cancer. The money raised from the challenge will help give these kids the chance they deserve to live happy, healthy lives. “I continue to be humbled by the outpouring of support from our local community,” said Sydney’s mother, Brittany. “We are thrilled that Uppercut Gym selected us as recipients for this year’s Healthy Eating Challenge. We appreciate Rodney and his clients’ compassion and support, and for going the distance together with us in our fight against pediatric cancer.” Sydney Harper Foundation, based in Narberth, PA, was founded in 2018 following the unexpected death of three-yearold Sydney Harper from complications of Wilms Disease, a rare form of pediatric kidney cancer that often strikes without any symptoms. The foundation creates and funds programs that provide education and awareness of pediatric cancer; increase knowledge around early prevention, detection and treatment of Wilms Disease and other forms of pediatric cancer; provide support, resources and a sense of community to those impacted. For 45 years, A Better Chance Lower Merion has been changing the lives of academically-promising young men of color, giving them a solid foundation from which to develop into the next generation of society’s leaders. ABC-LM reaches into underserved minority communities to recruit academically-talented students and immerses them in an intensive college preparation course. The scholars attend Lower Merion High School full time. Their education is supplemented by academic advising, SAT tutoring, and individual college placement counseling to ensure academic success. ABC-LM works to build young men of character and responsibility through workshops, and volunteer and leadership opportunities. One hundred percent of ABC-LM graduates go on to colleges and universities. Since its founding in 1973, 90 ABC-LM scholars have attended prestigious universities including Georgetown, Howard, Tufts, and NYU.

ing from other students began and then worsened, her heart broke—and her mind set on finding a safe educational environment where he could thrive. Around the same time, doctors and Sara were trying to determine why one of her daughters was suffering from idiopathic anaphylaxis which led to pseudoseizures. Eventually diagnosed as an unidentified autoimmune disorder, the degree of the impact ranges from sleepiness, to anaphylactic shock requiring the use of an EpiPen or, in severe cases, hospitalization. She was told to take naps in class— a “solution” never brought to Sara’s attention until the day her daughter’s pseudoseizures got so bad at school that no one was able to wake her. After that, school simply told Sara that her daughter was no longer permitted on campus. Lastly, there was Sara’s oldest daughter who was challenged with dyslexia and for some time received no support in coping with her learning disorder at the brick-and-mortar school she attended. Instead, teachers had her spend time coloring by herself while the rest of her classmates were engaged in reading class. Sara’s son’s shocking comment about life, compounded by the lack of support for the physical and learning disabilities of her daughter created a “perfect storm” for Sara. After hearing that there would be an extra charge for special education accommodations at the day school, she considered the possibility of enrolling them in their brick and mortar public school, but religious reasons and issues with an IEP made it an impossibility. This all led to Sara exploring the option of cyber schools, which led her to Agora Cyber Charter School, a fully accredited, free, online cyber school offered in Pennsylvania. Sara was “blown away” by Agora’s curriculum and support systems for individualized learning based on each student’s specific needs. It didn’t take long before Sara knew that with Agora she had landed on the ideal school for her children. That was six years ago, and from day one, Sara never looked back. Unlike other cyber schools, Agora families are assigned family coaches who add an extra layer of dedication, motivation and planning to make sure students have a plan and stay on track. Family coaches work alongside guidance counselors and teachers, all of whom are available for support. These are just some of the driving forces behind the 86 percent re-enrollment rate which the school experienced over the past year and is what inspired Sara to call Agora, “a breath of fresh air.” Sara also adds, “The teachers and coaches actually listen to the child’s needs and this is the biggest gift someone could give me.” Sara will enthusiastically recount with anyone the many success stories from her family’s journey with Agora, including one about her daughter with dyslexia. When she started with Agora, she couldn’t even do her ABCs, but now she is an enthusiastic reader and is thriving. Her eyes light up and it’s apparent that her brain is clicking in her special education class. “One of our teachers at Agora suggested that our second son might be struggling with vision, and she was right! Imagine that, a teacher on the internet knew my child so well that she was able to guide us to a fix,” Sara said. “Every parent wants to know that their child is in the best and most productive learning environment possible, and we found that with Agora. The individualized nature of their program and their ability to work with all students continues to blow me away. The supports they have in place through family coaches, guidance counselors and their amazing teachers make this a magical place.” When Sara reached out to Agora she was looking not only for the ability to have her daughter with the autoimmune disorder in school as much as possible, but a school that worked with her overall unique family situation. Sara and her daughter found this in Agora. The individualized program at Agora even includes their new service dog, Bravo. Bravo can attend in-person social events, programs and any state testing site. From a newly introduced book club, to travel club, to offering both National Honors Society and National Junior Honor Society, there are many opportunities for students to advance academically and thrive socially—and, thanks to Bravo and Agora, Sara’s daughter can experience all these. Tracy joined NBC10 in March 1996 and has since received 11 Emmy Awards, including the Best News Anchor Emmy for the Mid-Atlantic Region in 2008 and 2013. In 2013, Temple University honored her with the Lew Klein Alumni in Media Award. She was also recognized with Pennsylvania’s Most Powerful and Influential Women Award by the National and Pennsylvania Diversity Council. In 2014, she was inducted into

She has served on the Board of Directors for Philabundance and as the Honorary Chair for the March of Dimes’ Walk America/March for Babies. Tracy also served as the Honorary Chair for Minding Your Mind’s annual gala. Currently, Tracy is one of the co-chairs of the Communication Committee for Vision 2020. Tracy has chosen the Montgomery Child Advocacy Project as the beneficiary of her Tasty Talk. Their mission is to end child abuse and neglect in Montgomery County through legal services, advocacy, and education. Act II Playhouse in Ambler Presents Café Puttanesca ct II Playhouse in Ambler concludes its 20th Anniversary Season with the riotous musical comedy Café Puttanesca, on stage beginning May 14. Three “ladies of the evening” hang out in post-war Amsterdam, singing songs and telling jokes in this gut-busting show, which has music and lyrics by Michael Ogborn and book by Terrence J. Nolen and Michael Ogborn. “Without a doubt, audiences will enjoy the unapologetic and bawdy humor that is Café Puttanesca from start to finish!” director and choreographer Dann Dunn said. “This hilarious material is complete with catchy and vibrant music that will make audiences want to jump out of their seat and join the party. The atmosphere that the show creates will make audiences feel like they’re at their favorite spot, having a drink with a bunch of friends!” Due to popular demand, Café Puttanesca has already been extended a week, and will now close on June 16. The cast includes Act II favorites Eileen Cella (Camelot, Red Herring, My Fair Lady), Zachary J. Chiero (Biloxi Blues, Kiss Me, Kate), Jessica Riloff (I Ought to Be in Pictures), and April Woodall (Behind the Music: Holiday Tunes), as well as newcomer Eleni Delopoulos.

It was nominated for four Barrymore Awards, and Mary Martello won outstanding leading actress in a musical. Ogborn is a local composer, known for critically acclaimed shows at the Arden, including Baby Case and Tulipomania, and for composing many popular holiday pantos for People’s Light. During his time at The White House, David Litt wrote for Presidential Advisor Valerie Jarrett and ultimately became known as the “comic muse for the president,” authoring four of President Obama’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner presentations. Following his tenure, Mr. Litt became head writer for Funny or Die’s Washington DC office and published the memoir Thanks, Obama: My Hopey, Changey, White House Years. Comedy Conversation is inspired by 1812 Productions’ long-running political satire This Is The Week That Is. This Is The Week That Is has become a signature 1812 show, combining sketch comedy, satire, and musical parody to highlight the news of the day and explore the truth behind the headlines. This Is The Week That Is was recently honored with a documentary commission from American Theatre Wing, founder of The Tony Awards. The documentary, titled Conceiving Satire: The Making of This Is The Week That Is is now part of The Wing’s permanent archive. Mr. Litt joins Comedy Conversation to tell stories about his time at The White House and discuss crafting satire and jokes for the president, as well as for international comedy platforms. Mr. Litt will be joined by Dr. Dannagal Goldthwaite Young, Associate Professor of Communications atUniversity of Delaware. Dr. Young is a long-time member of Philadelphia’s theatre community, performing with renowned improvisational comedy troupe ComedySportz for 20 years. Dr. Young is also a political scientist and media scholar whose latest book, Irony and Outrage, looks at why political satire tends to be liberal, while opinion talk programming tends to be conservative. Dr. Young will moderate a group discussion with Mr. Litt, Jennifer Childs, and Don Montrey. Jennifer Childs is the creator of This Is The Week That Is for which Don Montrey has been a head writer since the show’s debut in 2006. Ms. Childs says, “We are thrilled to welcome David Litt to 1812 Productions. He has an amazing style and has crafted some of the funniest and most memorable political satire from the past 10 years. Montgomery Bar Helps Clean Up Norristown Family Law Section, Young Lawyers Section and Republic Bank Team Up to Keep Norristown Beautiful On Saturday morning, May 4, 2019, members of Montgomery Bar Association’s Family Law Section, Young Lawyers Section, and Republic Bank gathered at the Bar Building at 100 West Airy Street in Norristown to take part in a community cleanup around the Montgomery County Courthouse area. For the Young Lawyers Section, this event marked the first of their traditional “May Month of Service” activities planned throughout Montgomery County. The event was held in cooperation with Keep Norristown Beautiful, a Keep America Beautiful Affiliate.
