ARTS & CULTURAL EVENTS “Their Story is Your Story: Documentary Film Shorts and Discussion about Mental Health Stories” To kick off Mental Health Awareness Month, the public is invited to attend a free special screening and discussion of short documentary films on the subject of mental health at the Haverford Area YMCA on May 4 n Saturday evening, May 4, 2019 at 7 p.m. the Trent Stetler Memorial Fund, along with OC87 Recovery Diaries, and the Haverford Area YMCA present “Their Story is Your Story: Documentary Film Shorts and Discussion about Mental Health Stories.” To kick off May, Mental Health Awareness Month, the free event encourages individuals to share their mental health stories through discussion, journaling, art, blogging, film and more, and provides attendees with insight into the power and resonance of openness and vulnerability surrounding creativity and mental health.

O

The public is invited to attend a free special screening and discussion of short documentary films on the subject of mental health at the Haverford Area YMCA on May 4. The unique and engaging workshop will feature Gabriel Nathan, the Editor in Chief of “OC87 Recovery Diaries,” a Philadelphia-based mental health publication that produced the films. The event on May 4 takes place after hours at 7 p.m. at the Haverford Area YMCA, 891 N. Eagle Road, Havertown, PA. The screenings are free to the public, and attendees do not need to be members of the YMCA to attend the event. Attendees may register online for the free event at www.eventbrite.com/ e/their-story-is-your-story-documentary-films-discussionon-mental-health-tickets-60566213174?aff=ebdshpsearchautocomplete, but it is not necessary to register to attend the event. The unique and engaging workshop will feature Gabriel Nathan, the Editor in Chief of OC87 Recovery Diaries, a Philadelphia-based mental health publication that produced the films. Along with some of the individuals whose struggles and victories are featured in the short films, Mr. Nathan will discuss the narratives with audience members. “As we lose over 45,000 Americans yearly to suicide, that, to me, is a public health crisis,” said Nathan.“So many people are impacted by suicide and mental illness and yet, we don’t talk about it enough; it is scary, it is ‘other,’ it is ‘that person’ or ‘those families.’ This event is a hopeful, inspiring, and memorable event that shows that it is us; you and me, that we are all in this together.” The event demonstrates that individuals of all ages, races, education levels, and socioeconomic status deal with mental health challenges, and since forty-four million Americans annually are challenged with a serious mental health issue, most Americans have either personally experienced mental issues or have witnessed the challenges of someone in their immediate family. The Trent Stetler Memorial Fund was established in 2015 after the untimely death of twenty-year-old Trent Stetler, a 2012 graduate of Haverford High School and Elon University student. Funds are raised to advance mental health awareness, encourage discussion and eliminate the stigma. In addition, funds support annual scholarships for HHS lacrosse players; those who receive the scholarships promote the characteristics Trent was loved for: inclusion, leadership, maximum effort, humor &positive perspective. OC87 Recovery Diaries is an interactive website that provides individuals with a forum to share their stories of mental health, empowerment and change. The mission of the YMCA is to nurture the potential of all ages from young children to older Americans, improve the nation’s health and well-being, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Together in this educational initiative, The Trent Stetler Memorial Fund, OC87 Recovery Diaries and the YMCA provide an invaluable service to the community.

dgar S. Cahn, distinguished Professor of Law at the University of the District of Columbia School of Law, will deliver a keynote talk on Sunday, April 28, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Phoenixville. The talk, titled “No More Throw-Away People,” will be given as part of the Annual Meeting of Phoenixville Area Time Bank. All are welcome to attend at 7 p.m. Professor Cahn teaches Law and Justice and directs the Community Service Program at UDC School of Law. He is founder of TimeBanks USA; the Time Dollar Youth Court; and CareBanks. His use of “time dollars” as an economic strategy for addressing social problems is described in his books, Time Dollars (1992) and No More Throw-Away People: The Coproduction Imperative (2004), showing how to mobilize a nonmarket economy that recognizes and rewards reciprocal contributions of service and caring. He earned his B.A. from Swarthmore and his M.A., Ph.D., and J.D. from Yale. The event is sponsored by Phoenixville Area Time Bank (PATB), a non-profit organization that empowers people by honoring their personal talent and time, at its Annual Members’ Meeting. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is located at 121 Church Street in Phoenixville (entrance off parking lot, lower left side of church). The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., but attendees are encouraged to arrive at 7 p.m. to enjoy pre-meeting refreshments, music and socializing. Edgar Cahn will speak about how “Time Dollars” contribute to the well-being of TimeBank communities, helping those in need: the elderly, under-employed, and other populations whose economic status constrains quality of life. Professor Cahn and his wife Christine Gray currently devote most of their professional efforts to TimeBanksUSA, a non-

profit organization he established in 1995. “We at the Phoenixville Area Time Bank are delighted to welcome back Professor Cahn,” said PATB board member Joel Bartlett. “As the founder of TimeBanks USA, he is in a unique position to report on the progress of TimeBanking nationally and internationally. In addition, Professor Cahn inspires us with his compassion for those in need, as well as his vision for a society built on cooperation, sharing, and mutual service.” Attendees at the Annual Members’ Meeting will receive a door prize ticket. The meeting is open to the public, especially those wishing to learn more about TimeBanking and how to join PATB. The meeting is expected to end at 9 p.m., and will be followed by a door prize drawing, with additional refreshments and socializing. Founded in 2004, Phoenixville Area Time Bank’s vision is to maintain a strong, responsive, connected community where, using hours as currency, exchanges of personal talents can fill unmet needs. There are currently about 160 members, giving and receiving service through “neighbor-to-neighbor” exchanges and among non-profit organizations. Since its founding, there have been over 12,000 recorded exchanges accounting for approximately 42,000 hours. TimeBank members assist other members in a variety of ways, including pet sitting, cooking meals, computer skills, running errands, transportation, and home repairs. Monthly activity groups and social events connect members as well. New members are always welcome. For information about the Annual Members’ Meeting or joining the Time Bank, email pa.timedollar@gmail.org. Information is also available on the PATB website at www.patimebank.org.

Local Family Celebrates Three Breast Cancer Survivors and Mother’s Day by Being More Than Pink warthmore resident Patricia Greager reflects on how much progress has been made in treating breast cancer and supporting survivors since she was diagnosed in 1993. Pat didn’t have nearly the options there are today. At age 55, she underwent a mastectomy and TRAM flap surgery—in which skin, fat and muscle from the abdomen are used to reconstruct the breast. See “Line, Form, and Color: Evolving through the Years,” a retrospective solo show by Miami-based, Colombian-born artist Salomon Khammi, on display May 2 - September 29, 2019 at the Villanova University Art Gallery. Salomon Khammi’s “Acid Trip,” 24 x 20, Mixed Media handmade paper. and includes two distinct media – acrylic on canvas and encaustic wax on wood panel – in a wide variety of sizes. Yet all 62 paintings in the exhibition are connected by a mastery of line and color that is sometimes playful, sometimes sensuous, often moving, and always insightful. The Art Gallery will host a reception to meet the artist on Thursday, May 2 from 5 - 7 p.m. The Gallery is located in the Connelly Center on the Villanova camSee Salomon Khammi’s “Pacora,” 16 x 20, Encaustic. pus. Convenient on-campus parking is available. More information is available at www.artgallery.villanova.edu. Before turning to art full-time, Khammi was an architect. He graduated from the University in Bogotá in 1998 with a degree in architecture then studied Design at the Polytechnic Institute in Milan. He credits his architectural background with providing “the tools to create my artistic interpretations of what surrounds me. Form, line and color have always been very important to me as the genesis of design. All my life I’ve sketched lines in the form of bridges, skyscrapers, etc. Now those have evolved into a geometric artistic concept.” Perhaps equally important to Khammi’s style is his sense of place. Born in Colombia, Khammi traveled throughout South America as a young person, accompanying his father as he collected pre-Columbian artifacts. After his training in Milan, he returned to Colombia to begin his architectural career, but found the political and cultural climates hostile and unstable. Khammi sought freedom from those limitations in North America. He moved first to Miami Beach, then Philadelphia and Toronto, where he lived for 10 years before returning to Miami. As his personal journey has unfolded, Khammi has tended to produce series of paintings that share themes, styles, and color palettes. “Form, Line and Color: Evolving Through the Years” will include selections from his various series that, taken together, illuminate the experience of an immigrant and an artist in search of freedom, happiness, and his true home. He feels that in Miami, he has found what he was searching for. He says, “I love to live here. I feel freer. I think that’s the important thing. Happiness has come back to me, after many years in the long grey winters. When I moved to Miami four years ago, I started to paint in the colors I see here in south Florida—like blues, greens and yellows and oranges, and I changed my palette, from Toronto to here. I think it’s part of my evolution. When you are in different environments, I think you start to do something completely different. I always felt the deep desire to come back [to Miami], and I think the entire universe confabulates.” One of Khammi’s earliest series, titled “Primeval” (acrylic on canvas), feels both ancient and modern, echoing the folk art traditions of South America and mesmerizing the viewer with intricate geometric designs-within-designs. His three separate “Visage” series (encaustic on wood panel) track the artist’s exploration of himself, using human shapes – specifically faces or masks – that alternately settle into orderly grids in greys and blues and explode with vivid reds, pinks, and greens. Khammi’s series “School” (encaustic on wood panel) is the artist’s response to the influence of fracking on Canadian lands, featuring the deep blues and icy greys of a long, cold Canadian winter. Its lines snake across the panels like frozen rivers, sometimes split by vertical intrusions. “Arkitectonika” (acrylic on canvas), Khammi’s first series painted in Miami, brims with happy, playful energy, pulling in the warm yellow of sunshine, the vibrant blue of the ocean, plus green, orange, and other hues in sharp, clean, geometric juxtapositions. Visitors who are not familiar with the encaustic wax medium will have a rich introduction through “Line, Form and Color.” The ancient technique requires the artist to heat beeswax to high temperatures and combine it with oil paint, applying it to wood panel in layers. Khammi learned to work with encaustic wax when after he had moved to Toronto. He says, “The encaustic provides something very special in every single painting, because it’s very translucent, and you can see how many layers of wax the painting contains. I find it mesmerizing. In person, it’s very tactile.” His studio in Miami is not yet set up to accommodate encaustic painting, so he is currently working in acrylic on wood. The immediacy of acrylic in comparison to encaustic is one more reason that Khammi’s most recent paintings have an immediate, more buoyant feel. The Villanova University Art Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. For extended and weekend hours, and other information, contact the Art Gallery at 610-519-4612.
