Main Line Art Center Twists the Traditional in Urban Pop 9th Annual Betsy Meyer Memorial Exhibition ake what you thought you knew about Main Line Art Center and twist it. Start with classic artistic training, add in graffiti, skateboard half-pipe references, and then a layer of vinyl tape. This is Urban Pop, the ninth annual exhibition presented in memory of Teaching Artist Betsy Meyer, appearing in the galleries March 20 to April 12. Featuring artists DISTORT, Leslie Friedman, and Jay Walker, Urban Pop is an exhibition of works influenced by Pop Art and urban culture that explores the expansion of traditional artistic mediums into installation works referencing graffiti, half-pipes, and iconography. Curated by Amie Potsic, Executive Director of Main Line Art Center, the exhibition is a fitting tribute to Betsy Meyer, who encouraged those around her to push beyond expectation. The works presented in Urban Pop meld a deep appreciation for art history and classical training with ephemeral, low-fi materials to create incredibly well-crafted conJay Walker’s “Istoria: Theotokos XXIII, tape on wall, 144" by temporary works. By way of 192" (partial view), 2013. screen-printed repeat patterns on linoleum tile and sculptural references to half-pipes, Leslie Friedman transforms spaces into bright, sparkly surfaces with subversive content below. Combining his classical training with the creative energy of graffiti, DISTORT creates sculptural works inspired by his admiration of the Baroque and the intensity of present day life. Jay Walker’s large-scale wall installations combining vinyl tape and repeated iconography deftly reference the visual languages of portraiture, Pop, and design. Each of the works presented exist in a dialogue with art history as well as our contemporary experience of urbanism and popular culture. Main Line Art Center has planned a variety of programs inspired by the vibrant and edgy art of Urban Pop. The exhibition opens with a free artist talk on Friday, March 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. On Thursday, April 4 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., the Art Center will host Artini: Pinot & Prints, the latest installment of its popular Young Friend Artini Series. After the tour of the gallery and a glass of wine, participants will learn about screenprinting from Urban Pop artist Leslie Friedman, and then experience it firsthand by making prints. Advanced registration required: Young Friend Members are free; General Members and Non-Members are $15. With Urban Pop artist DISTORT, young artists ages 11-18 will learn about basic graffiti art lettering styles and create their own tag in a Graffiti Lettering Workshop on Thurs., April 11 from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Advanced registration required: $25 Members/$35 Non-Members. A free closing reception will be held on Thursday, April 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Main Line Art Center’s galleries are free and open to the public Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Combining classical training with the intense creative energy of graffiti, DISTORT has impacted the streets and galleries alike. Now living in Jersey City, DISTORT earned a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 2010, he presented his work in a solo show at the Works on Paper Gallery in Philadelphia. With subsequent shows in New York and New Jersey, his sculptural installations and paintings on canvas soon combined into his own original formats of “scrolls and “shields. Together with The Element Tree, a cultural showcase and store in

Curio Theatre Company Presents Madville – a World Premiere urio Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Madville written by Curio’s Artistic Director Paul Kuhn, performing March 20 - April 13, at the Calvary Center, 4740 Baltimore Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19143. All performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 - $20 ($10 - $15 for previews) and can be purchased online at www.curiotheatre.org or by calling 215-525-1350. Madville is the world created by children living in the Canadian woods. They now return as adults and struggle with memories of surviving in this remote location with their parents. Art, their father, is a musician unequipped to deal with the wilderness where he brought his family. His wife holds the family together and dreams of appliances most of us take for granted. Their children build or rebel against their roles of torturer or victim, outsider or follower. They all share stories from their experience in an attempt to connect with, run from, or understand their shared past. Madville is Kuhn’s first original work produced by Curio Photo/Kyle Cassidy of West Philadelphia since co-writing 2009’s A Funeral Farce. “For me, it’s about madness,” says playwright Kuhn. “It’s that time that you look “Madville” cast includes, from left, back – Steve Carpenter, Josh Hitchens, Jennifer Summerfield and Paul Kuhn; front – back on your past and how crazy it was, that you weren’t even realizing you were steeped in madness at the time. Making her directorial debut at Curio Theatre Company is Rosemary Fox of Swarthmore. “Paul’s story is remarkable and unlike any story I have ever heard, yet at the same time, I can relate and connect to his story. It is our stories, when shared, which remind us of our humanity and our connection to each other.” Madville cast includes Jennifer Summerfield, Paul Kuhn, Rachel Gluck and Harry Slack of West Philadelphia. Eric Scotolati and Steve Carpenter of South Philadelphia and Josh Hitchens of Fairmount. Set Design is by Paul Kuhn, Lighting Design by Tim Martin of Bryn Mawr and Costume Design by Aetna Gallagher of Wallingford.

EDUCATION NEWS Devon Prep Basketball Coach Frio Retires After 16 Years ixteen years ago Bill Frio was looking for a change from coaching middle school basketball. He wanted to move into coaching at the high school level. So when he was asked to join Devon Prep’s basketball program he was happy to accept. As a 1974 alumnus of the school, who also played basketball there, it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. Now, after nine years as JV Coach and seven years as Varsity Coach, Frio is retiring. His record speaks well of him. He was the winningest JV Coach in the school’s history and the third winningest Varsity Coach. He coached nearly 400 JV and Varsity basketball games in that time, won several tournaments and 2 Class AA district titles (2011 & 2012). Six of Frio’s varsity teams were seeded #1 in District A, and his 2009-10 varsity team went to the second round of the state championship, the only Devon Prep team to get that far in the post season. The decision to retire wasn’t an easy one for Frio who has been involved with Devon Prep as a student, alumnus, and parent, as well as a coach. “I’m leaving with mixed emotions,” he said. “I’ll miss the school, I’ll miss the boys. I really enjoyed coaching and being at Devon. I was a student there, my son went there, I have a long history with the school. But I feel good knowing that I made a difference in the lives of the boys I coached.” Among those boys are several record breaking athletes including—Duncan Becker, the leading rebounder in school Devon Prep Coach Bill Frio with Jeff Hughes on the day he history, Jeff Hughes, the second leading scorer and leading scored his 1000th point. Hughes, a member of Devon Prep’s three 3 point scorer, and two of the school’s top ten 3 point Class of 2010, is the second leading scorer and leading three scorers, Steve Kohlbrenner (#4), and Mike Giampietro (#7). 3 point scorer in the school’s history. As much as all of the awards and records mean, however, Frio says it’s really the people – players, parents, coaches, – he met and worked with along the way that he will remember most. “Aside from all the games we played, tournaments we won, and play offs we’ve been in, some of my fondest memories come from the joy I got helping players and fellow coaches over the years,” he explained. “That makes you feel good as a person. “Several years ago there was a student I took as a sophomore and started as a senior,” Frio continued. “Apparently his experience had such an impact on him that he wrote his college essay about me. I have the essay hanging in my office. That meant more than all the tournaments and all the wins. That’s the other side of coaching. It’s not just the wins and losses.” According to Mark Aquilante, Devon Prep’s Athletic Director, Frio’s retirement will leave a void in the school’s basketball program because he wasn’t just a coach, but also a mentor and friend. “Bill Frio has been a huge asset to our school as our varsity basketball coach,” Aquilante said. “He has been a great coach, but more importantly, he has been a mentor and friend to our student – athletes. We won’t be able to replace the amount of kindness and generosity he has shown to our parents and players. His retiring is an enormous loss to our school, but we know he will remain a fixture in our Devon community.” As for the future, Frio doesn’t have any coaching plans at this time. He does plan to stay connected to his alma mater, though. He intends to go back for alumni functions and of course to watch some games. “I would like to see Devon win a state championship,” Frio said. “We all know Devon is a great academic school, but I want people to know that our athletics are great too. A state championship would definitely do that.” Devon Prep is a private, Catholic, college preparatory school for young men in grades six through 12 conducted by the Piarist Fathers. Located on a 20 acre campus in Devon, on Philadelphia’s Main Line, Devon Prep enrolls nearly 300 students who hail from Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Bucks counties as well as parts of Philadelphia. n Saturday, March 16, join other history enthusiasts at Fort Mifflin for a weekend-long program of hands-on workshops and presentations highlighting the food produced and consumed during the American War for Independence. The site was used by the Continental Forces in an attempt to keep the British Navy from resupplying their troops with much-needed supplies further north on the Delaware River. The site is collaborating with a local small business that organizes these types of historic-themed experiences, Mrs. Boice’s Historie Academie. But hurry, space is limited, so be sure to call Kimberly at 215-932-5583 or visit www.boicehistorieacademie.com. Some of the region’s well-known scholars will make presentations beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16 inside one of the site’s historic buildings. Topics range from the campfollowers of the British army to the realties of the winter encampment at Valley Forge. The research presented will include information gleaned from period newspapers, diaries, and official war correspondence, as spoken in the words of the time. Pre- and post-symposium workshops are also being offered and will have participants cooking over open fires, much in the way they did while “on-campaign.” Spaces are filling fast for the symposium and workshops and pre-registration is required. Mrs. Boice’s Historie Academie is a locally-based small business that coordinates weekend-long learning experiences at historic sites. Haverford High’s WHHS (99.9 FM) Receives Donation from Kal & Lucille Rudman Radio Studio Named in Their Honor onation will provide equipment in crucial FCC license renewal process for one of nation’s first and longest running high school radio stations The Kal and Lucille Rudman Foundation presented a timely donation for new equipment to the Haverford High School student radio station, WHHS (99.9 FM) on Wednesday, February 20 at the WHHS Studio at Haverford High School. Students then named the WHHS Studio, The Kal and Lucille Rudman Studio. Radio and music industry legend Kal Rudman and his wife Lucille toured the studio and spoke with students about their radio training experience. Thanks to the donation, new equipment will be purchased which will strengthen WHHS’ bid to meet the requirements to renew its FCC license. One of the oldest running high school FM stations in the United States, WHHS has persevered when the number of high school radio stations has dropped to only 200 left across the nation. In addition, the grant includes WHHS in a network of collegiate radio stations. This will allow Haverford High student the opportunity to learn from college students and benefit from expanded radio experiences. “I consider a communications teaching program to be the same as any other vocational program,” said Mr. Rudman. “The ability to start at the high school level, including engineering, programming, and administration has enabled students at Haverford since the late 1940s to have a big edge in obtaining professional careers, both locally and around the United States.” School District of Haverford Township Superintendent, Dr. William Keilbaugh commented, “Haverford High School has a rich tradition of Student Radio. WHHS alumni now work for radio equipment upgrades to stations like WMGK, WYSP, WXPN, and others around the country.
