Traveling Exhibition Opens in Philadelphia March 12 collection of historical boycott posters will be exhibited at Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street in Philadelphia providing a visual history of economic activism over the last 60 years. An opening event and panel discussion will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday March 12, 2014. Speakers will discuss the use of economic activism as a tool for bringing social change. “Posters are one of the most effective and widespread means for educating the public about an issue, promoting a cause and inspiring action,” said Michael Merryman-Lotze of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), sponsor of the exhibition “Boycott! The Art of Economic Activism.” “Boycotts as a form of nonviolent protest have been used for more than a hundred years to bring an end to injustice. These powerful posters tell a history of grassroots activism that is often left out of history books.” “Boycott! The Art of Economic Activism” features posters that highlight more than twenty boycotts, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, United Farm Workers’ grape and lettuce boycott, divestment from South Africa to protest apartheid, boycotts of corporations using sweatshops, the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, and many others. AFSC, a Quaker organization that promotes lasting peace with justice across the U.S. and around the world, initiated the exhibition and produced it in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Political Graphics. “We hope that viewers will be challenged to evaluate their economic choices and to consider whether or not our choices contribute to a more just and peaceful world,” said Jennifer Bing, the AFSC staffer who serves as the exhibit’s national coordinator. “Boycott! The Art of Economic Activism” will be shown at Friends Center through March 27 before travelling to other locations throughout the United States including New Jersey, North Carolina, California, North Dakota, Michigan and Illinois. For information, visit www.afsc.org/boycott-art-economicactivism. For information, call Friends Center at 215-241-7000. Every Week Find Great Information & Advertisers in City Suburban News!

Artists at the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival exemplify the creativity and technical mastery that are the hallmarks of the American craft movement. A few of the craftspeople demonstrating their talent live at the Festival in Oaks, Pa.,are: • Alan Uchin & Dale Norley: With a combined 65 years of jewelry design experience, the husband and wife team will fashion elegant jewelry from varied textured metals of their own creation combined with rare fossils. • William Richardson: Crafted from thin strips of bent, wrapped and braided wood, William’s decorative shaker boxes, jewelry chests, trays, and baskets are instant Americana heirlooms. • Nick Vincent: Donning a heavy protective apron and thick gloves, Nick will manipulate metal heated to over 2,000 degrees to create his contemporary furniture, sculpture, and historic restoration pieces. Using a hammer and chisel, he will pound red hot iron into elegant shapes, curls, and forms. • Bob Dewitt: The historic art of hand-carving will be on display as Bob demonstrates how he works with graining and imperfections in wood to create rustic serving utensils, bowls, and cutting boards using only a mallet and chisel. ewish Family and Children’s Service (JFCS) of Greater Philadelphia presents ReelAbilities: Philadelphia Disabilities Film Festival on March 20 - March 27. ReelAbilities, modeled after the largest festival of its kind in the country, is dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with different disabilities. ReelAbilities, designed to raise awareness and funds, supports JFCS’ Center for Special Needs’ ability to provide critical direct service to clients and those members of the community most in need. Initiated in NY in 2007, the Philadelphia Festival presents award winning films by and about people with disabilities in multiple locations throughout our region. Post-screening discussions and other engaging programs bring together the community to explore, discuss, embrace, and celebrate the diversity of our shared human experience. Presented by JFCS Philadelphia, with the support of The Saul Schottenstein Foundation and Jason’s Connection, as well as numerous local organizations and individuals (visit www.jfcsphilly.org/reelabilities for complete list), ReelAbilities will feature films, panel discussions with guest filmmakers, and educational programming in various locations throughout the city. “We are thrilled to present for its third year ReelAbilities Film Festival to the Philadelphia region, a film festival that is the first of its kind in our area. This has been a true collaboration with community agencies, our donors and friends, as well as local art and film organizations,” says Paula Goldstein, JFCS President and CEO. This festival will be held at venues throughout the region, bringing together a broad mix of people, to discuss and celebrate diversity. To view the full festival program, sponsors, purchase tickets, and to support the festival, visit www.jfcsphilly.org/reelabilities or call 267-256-2112. JFCS’ mission is to strengthen families and individuals across generations and cultures to achieve stability, independence and community.

Estate Planning Myths and Mistakes Lecture he Myths and Mistakes of Estate Plan ning” will be the subject of David M. Smilk, Esq. when he speaks Thursday evening, March 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Sholom in Broomall. The meeting is open to the public. A partner in the Broomall firm of Sand, Gibbs, Marcus and Smilk, Mr. Smilk is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and Temple University’s Law School. He was one of the first attorneys in Pennsylvania to draft and execute the “Real Estate Deed of Trust” and subsequently testified in Harrisburg at State legislative hearings to repeal and clarify the real estate transfer tax that may have previously applied to such deeds. Smilk developed short cuts to solve estate issues, often allowing clients to avoid more costly full probate administration, saving clients fees and time expended. “An Evening Without The Catskills: A Brief History of Jewish Humor” Monday, March 10 at 7:30 & Tuesday, March 11 at 7:30 ather your minyan, 1812 Productions brings the Catskills to Philadelphia for two shows only. “An Evening Without the Catskills: A Brief History of Jewish Humor” spans more than a century of Jewish humor with a script curated and written by 1812’s Artistic Director, Jennifer Childs, and performances from Ms. Childs, Karen Getz, David Ingram, and Thomas E. Shotkin. Jennifer Childs takes the podium as the evening’s tour guide, beginning, appropriately enough, “In the beginning…,” with arguably the first recorded episode of Jewish humor. The Lord tells Abraham that his wife, Sarah, at the frisky age of 91, will bear him a son. Upon hearing this news, Sarah laughs (Genesis 18:12). The evening turns to Sholem Aleichem whose stories are the basis for the history-making musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” the creation of Purim plays, the evolution of Yiddish Theatre, and Jewish immigrants and their impact on the world of Vaudeville. After Vaudeville’s decline, in the years preceding World War II, The Catskills area of Upstate New York became a home to some of the most popular and influential Jewish entertainers of the 20th century. Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar, Henny Youngman, and Shecky Greene all rose to prominence on Catskills stages. “An Evening Without The Catskills” features work by these comedy luminaries, as well as that of comedians who would take the world of Jewish humor into its next phase—Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart. “An Evening Without The Catskills” also looks at the rise of women in the world of Jewish comedy, post-Vaudeville, through The Catskills and beyond, featuring work from comedians like Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Totie Fields, Joan Rivers, and more. “An Evening Without The Catskills” is the newest creation in 1812’s long-running series of “Evenings Without,” celebrating the works of great comedy actors and writers. Past events include “An Evening Without Bob Newhart,” “An Evening Without Steve Martin,” “An Evening Without Woody Allen,” “An Evening Without Tom Lehrer,” and “An Evening of Holiday Shorts by David Sedaris.” “An Evening Without The Catskills: A Brief History of Jewish Humor” is a special concert production and will play for two performances only, Monday, March 10 at 7:30 and Tuesday, March 11 at 7:30, at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Street, in Center City. All tickets are $25 and can be purchased at 215-592-9560 or at www.1812productions.org.

ox Populi will host “Alien She,” a traveling exhibition that explores the lasting impact on artists and cultural producers of the pioneering punk feminist movement Riot Grrrl. The exhibition focuses on seven contemporary artists working in a wide range of disciplines, including visual art, music, documentary film, new media, writing and performance, and provides a view into the passion and diversity of the original Riot Grrrl movement. The exhibition will open Friday, March 7, with a reception, from 6 - 10 p.m., including a tour at 6 p.m., led by cocurator, Astria Suparak. Directly following the opening at Vox Populi, the event will continue with a live music event at Johnny Brenda’s from 9 p.m. - 2 a.m. The exhibition and opening night events are free and open to the public. Vox Populi is located at 319 N. 11th Street, 3rd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107. In addition, Vox Populi will host public programs including music performances, workshops, and discussions in collaboration with several local groups and institutions. For information, including a detailed list of confirmed events, visit http://bit.ly/AlienShe_Vox or call the gallery at 215-2381236. Local and Regional Collaborators: Pussy Division (Philadelphia); Mannequin Pussy (New York City); Trophy Wife (Philadelphia); The Pretty Greens (Philadelphia); Pushin it to the Limit (Philadelphia); Avalon Clare of New Radio (Philadelphia); Dead Flowers Burlesque Troupe (Philadelphia); Elena Waldman (New York City); Sara Sherr (Philadelphia); and Ceci Moss + Astria Suparak, exhibition curators and former Riot Grrrls (California). Formed in reaction to violent sexism, racism and homophobia in the punk music scene and in the culture at large, Riot Grrrl emerged in the early 1990s and inspired many people around the world to pursue socially and politically progressive careers as artists, activists, authors and educators. Emphasizing female and youth empowerment, collaborative organization, creative resistance and DIY ethics, Riot Grrrl helped a new generation to become active feminists who created their own culture and communities to reflect their values and experiences. The movement spread, with chapters opening in at least 29 states and 21 countries, and with many new chapters forming in recent years. Riot Grrrl’s influence on contemporary global culture is increasingly evident — from the Russian collective Pussy Riot’s protest against corrupt government-church relations to the popular teen website “Rookie,” and the launch of Girls Rock Camps and Ladyfest music and art festivals around the world. “Riot Grrrl fostered community, action and creation,” Suparak said. “This exhibition provides a view into the passion and diversity of the original Riot Grrrl movement and highlights how these ideas have broadened, evolved and mutated in the work of contemporary artists.” The exhibiting artists are Ginger Brooks Takahashi (North Braddock, Pittsburgh), Tammy Rae Carland (Oakland, Calif.), Miranda July (Los Angeles), Faythe Levine (Milwaukee), Allyson Mitchell (Toronto), L.J. Roberts (Brooklyn) and Stephanie Syjuco (San Francisco). Each artist is represented by several projects from the last 20 years, including new and rarely seen works, providing an insight into the development of their creative practices and individual trajectories. Of the historic section of the exhibition, Moss said, “This is a living history, not a sealed past. By representing numerous voices and experiences, rather than outlining one single definitive story, we hope the historical section of the show will reflect the multiplici-

Music playlists represent different Riot Grrrl scenes across the United States, Canada, South America and Europe. These playlists are guest-curated by musicians, DJs and music label owners internationally and accompanied by records, set lists, band T-shirts and other ephemera. Video interviews and ongoing, online projects like the Riot Grrrl Census ( http://riotgrrrlcensus.tumblr.com) and Riot Grrrl Chapters Map (bit.ly/RGmap) provide an expanded oral history. In various ways, these artists have incorporated, expanded upon, or reacted to Riot Grrrl’s ideology, tactics and aesthetics. For instance, many continue to cultivate and nurture alternative communities. Ginger Brooks Takahashi creates spaces for conversation and exchange with jubilant publications, dance parties, mobile reading rooms and soup delivery service. Through photography and video, Faythe Levine documents groups committed to DIY independence and handmade aesthetics, such as crafters, off-thegridders, and, in her new book and documentary, traditional hand-lettered sign painters. L.J. Roberts fabricates declarations of protest and solidarity with evocative banners and textile works. Riot Grrrl thrived through the establishment of DIY networks and information sharing, an aspect manifest in Stephanie Syjuco’s project for freely distributing copyrighted critical texts and in Miranda July’s video chain letter for “lady moviemakers.” Recalling forgotten her/histories also was central to Riot Grrrl, and in that vein, Allyson Mitchell pays homage to key writings, feminist presses, bookstores and libraries with lesbian feminist library wallpaper, while Tammy Rae Carland reveals intimate relationships in her autobiographical photo series. All of the artists included here have worked collaboratively and many have built platforms for other artists and under-recognized groups to connect, encourage, share resources and self-publish. “Alien She” was organized by Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “Alien She” has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
