Concentration Camp. The main character of the play, Raja, is based on Zadnikova. 5 casts of 9 actors, made up of area students in grades 5-12 and two professional actors, have toured throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area this year visiting 40 schools, places of worship, community and senior centers. Of the 15,000 children who passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp, Zadnikova was one of the 100 children who survived. The play I Never Saw Another Butterfly is based on the book of the same name. The book is a compilation of poetry and artwork created by the children in the camp. The poetry written by the children of Terezin are lines for the actors. Raja Zadnikova answered questions from the cast about her experiences in Terezin, liberation, and her life today. The cast hung on Zadnikova’s every word, in awe of this once in a lifetime opportunity. “Talking to Raja Englanderova was one of the most powerful things I have ever experienced,” says Emma Franzel, 18, one of the actors playing Raja. “Raja taught me to never underestimate the power of hope and to be thankful for the freedoms I have.” After the conversation, the cast began compiling 15,000 handmade butterflies for a public art project. Throughout the tour, cast members, audiences, and supporters of The Butterfly Project have created paper butterflies in memory of the more than 15,000 children who passed through Terezin. These butterflies will be sent to the Holocaust Museum Houston to join their display of 1.5 million butterflies; one in honor of every child lost during the Holocaust. The Butterfly Project will conclude at the Kimmel Center during the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA 2013). Friends’ Central School Students Win National Mobile App Design Competition Students Work with Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab to Develop Apps

The STEAM Team proudly displays their honorary certificates and new Samsung Galaxy Tabs. From left – Grace Heard, Colin Roberts, Drew Leventhal, Max Luzuriaga, Heather Witzel-Lakin, Samuel Beckley, faculty advisor Keith Buckingham, Aqeel Philips and Daniel Stadtmauer. team of high school students from Friends’ Central School are winners of a national competition to develop mobile applications that address a need or problem in their school. Their “STEAMnet” app concept is one of 10 winning designs. The app is designed to support creative thinking and virtual collaboration, especially outside the standard school day. The competition, the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, was created by the Verizon Foundation in partnership with the Technology Student Association to help boost student engagement and interest in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. The students were asked to use their STEM skills to design app concepts that provided real-world solutions for issues in their communities or schools. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab will continue to work with the Friends’ Central School STEAMnet team to refine their projects. Verizon will provide the teams with professional support and training to help bring their concepts to market. The final products will be made available for download from Google’s Play Store. In addition, Friends’ Central School will receive a $10,000 Verizon Foundation grant to advance STEM education at their school, and each team member will receive the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, courtesy of Samsung Mobile. “It’s clear that technology can get kids excited about learning, and it was delightful to see the care and thoughtfulness these students put into developing a solution to a problem,” said Rose Stuckey Kirk, president of the Verizon Foundation. “We were impressed by their creativity, their ability to collaborate as teams, and their interest in developing a mobile app.” More than 470 student teams from across the country submitted concepts for the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. The Friends’ Central School STEAMnet team consisted of eight students: Samuel Beckley, Grace Heard, Drew Leventhal, Max Luzuriaga, Aqeel Philips, Colin Roberts, Daniel Stadtmauer and Heather Witzel-Lakin. The team was guided by three faculty advisors, Colin Angevine, Keith Buckingham, and Josh Weisgrau. Students also received tutorials from Verizon’s Innovation Center engineers, who created instructional videos on app design and development. The submissions were housed on the Innovation Portal of Project Lead The Way, a leading provider of rigorous and innovative STEM education programs used in middle and high schools across the U.S. In working with the MIT Media Lab to develop their winning app, and make them available for download from Google’s Play Store, the students will learn how to use the MIT App Inventor tool and the basics of coding. If the STEAMnet team builds their apps by June 7, two members of the team will be invited to present their app at the National Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando, Fla., later that month. The 10 winning app designs were selected by a panel of STEM and industry experts from the Verizon Innovation Center, MIT Media Lab, Samsung Mobile, the New York Hall of Science, the National Academy Foundation, National Geographic, the International Reading Association and the American Association of the Advancement of Science. Entries were judged based on their clear identification of a need or problem in a school or community; originality; creativity; the viability of the concept; and the applicability of STEM principles and practices. Another Verizon Innovative App Challenge will be held in the fall. The Verizon Foundation is focused on accelerating social change by using the company’s innovative technology to help solve pressing problems in education, healthcare and energy management.

for breath as a crowd applauds. Reality and illusion collide and only the audience can tell truth from fiction. After a lifetime of death defying escapes, Houdini prepares to take his final curtain call. EgoPo has assembled a talented cast and crew, with several familiar EgoPo faces, to bring this magic show to life. EgoPo welcomes back Robert DaPonte as Harry Houdini. Mr. DaPonte has been a professional actor in Philadelphia for over 8 years. His past EgoPo credits include Spring Awakening, Waiting for Godot, and last year’s A Dybbuk. DaPonte is thrilled to be exploring the great illusionist and says, “Harry would be the first one to tell his audiences that his illusions were based on sleight of hand, not magic. He was the most famous stage magician of all time, a man perceived to have super heroic abilities by his scores of fans; but it is Houdini as fallible human being which interests me. His doubts about the prospect of an afterlife mirror our own...” Brenna Geffers serves as director and creator of this world premiere. Geffers has worked with EgoPo for the past six years and has directed many EgoPo productions including The Golem, Marat/Sade, and Waiting for Godot among many others. She has created new work for the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theater, the Philadelphia Artists Collective, The Metropolitan Theater in NYC, and as a guest artist at Temple University. She is also a freelance director in Philadelphia. The script of The Life (and Death) of Harry Houdini will receive a reading at the National Constitution Center on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. Audiences are encouraged to join for this special reading followed by a discussion of the Vaudeville and Prohibition eras with EgoPo’s resident dramaturge, Glenn Odom, The National Constitution Center’s Director of Theater Programs, Nora Quinn, and Director of Houdini, Brenna Geffers. FREE with admission to the National Constitution Center. For information on this reading, visit www.constitutioncenter.org. EgoPo is partnering with the National Constitution Center as well as re-partner with the National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) to create a limited-time package: Houdini, Hooch, and History. GET READY FOR CAMP Philadelphia Young Playwrights Collaborates with Theatre Horizon to Reach Adult Students through Autism Drama Outreach Program P hiladelphia Young Playwrights in collaboration with Theatre Horizon’s Autism Drama Outreach program introduces Young Adult Playwriting, a new class for students ages 17 30 with autism. Enrollment is ongoing for the current class and a new session begins in May. Young Adult Playwriting was made possible as a pilot with funding from The June and Steve Wolfson Family Foundation. In Young Adult Playwriting, students will explore the various ways to write plays, focusing on strong characterization, rich dialogue and engaging story lines. Teaching artists will help writers develop the skills they need to communicate their ideas effectively and make bold choices in a collaborative atmosphere. The staff’s first priority is to create and maintain a safe, fun environment where eye contact, socialization and peer interaction are encouraged and celebrated. Theatre Horizon’s teaching method draws heavily on the Son-Rise method, a play-based therapy program which emphasizes love and acceptance. Son-Rise and Theatre Hori-

zon stress that autism is not a behavioral disorder but a neurological challenge and that the potential of every child – or adult student -is limitless. “Young Playwrights is honored to enter this work in partnership with Theatre Horizon, and eager to stimulate and hear the voices of the Program’s adult students. We thank Steve and June Wolfson for the thoughtful philanthropy that makes this pioneering and meaningful work possible, says Young Playwrights’ Executive Producing Director, Glen Knapp. Registration remains open for Young Adult Playwriting at Theatre Horizon's Autism Drama Outreach program, comprised of six weekly Saturday classes. The spring session runs May 4 - June 8. Classes are held at Theatre Horizon, 401 DeKalb Street in Norristown. For information on enrollment, contact Education Director Leigh Mallonee at leigh@theatrehorizon.org or call 610-283-2230. To learn more about the program, visit www.theatrehorizon.org.

But luckily, they won’t be munching on the plants. Events and educational activities will accompany the exhibit. Visit www.morrisarboretum.org for updates and more details. The Big Bugs by David Rogers exhibit is made possible by the Madeleine K. Butcher Fine Arts Endowment. A Grand Opening event will take place on Saturday, April 6, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Visitors are invited to dress as bugs for a parade around the garden. There will be bug-inspired music, a bug craft activity, and Big Bugs scavenger hunt maps.
