arcum College’s Animal Center Management Program will offer a one-day animal training workshop – for veterinary professionals and members of the public who own or work with animals – with Barbara Heiden reich on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Harcum’s Bryn Mawr Campus. Heidenreich is a professional animal trainer who advocates a forcefree approach to animal training and treatment. She is an author, lecturer, consultant to zoos and animal parks, and an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University. Her workshop will focus on understanding animal behavior and techniques to make veterinary care stress-free, with an

Presidents’ Day Weekend During Presidents’ Day weekend, visitors to The National Constitution Center will learn about the role of the president and what it takes to be commander-in-chief. Youth Justice Forum at Eastern University Falls Center Feb. 21

he Center for Urban Youth Development at Eastern University will host a youth justice forum, Ways to Advocate for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System, on Friday, February 21, from 6:30 - 9 p.m. This educational and practical forum will feature the Juvenile Law Center’s Juveniles for Justice and Catherine Moffa, Associate for Youth Engagement (www.jlc.org). It will be held at the Eastern University Falls Center site, 3300 Henry Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19129. All youth/young adult panelists have been in the juvenile justice system and will briefly share their experience, discuss their current advocacy work, and engage the audience on ways they can also advocate for youth in the system. Refreshments (at 6:30 p.m.), resources, and prizes will be offered. Attendees will leave with practical tools and tasks for advocacy. This event is free to the general public and is expected to draw educators, youth justice advocates, concerned citizens, college and graduate students, and concerned high school students. FLEISHER ART MEMORIAL PRESENTS 14TH ANNUAL PRINT LOVE-IN FEB. 9 Families to gather at Fleisher Art Memorial to learn printmaking techniques from local artists and create their own Valentine’s Day cards leisher Art Memorial will present its 14th annual Print Love-In on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Fleisher’s Works on Paper Building located at 705 Christian Street in Philadelphia. The Love-In, a cherished family-friendly event since 2000, serves as a welcoming introduction to printmaking as well as Fleisher’s programs and mission rooted in the ideals of Samuel Fleisher. The Love-In will feature three sessions, beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding at 7 p.m. Sessions one (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and two (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) are open to ages 5 and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult. An evening session with wine and light refreshments for ages 21+ will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Registration is available online at www.fleisher.org or by calling 215-922-3456, ext. 300. Walkup registrations will also be accepted at the door, but space is limited. Registration fees are $10 per person for sessions one and two and $20 per person for session three. Alex Bechtel joins the evening at the piano, performing a tongue-in-cheek selection of Valentine’s Day standards. A spoof of A.R. Gurny’s “Love Letters,” “Hate Mail” tells the story of Preston, a spoiled rich kid from the Midwest, who meets his match in Dahlia, an angst-filled New York artist. Their worlds collide when Preston sends a complaint letter that gets Dahlia fired from her job, and then there’s no turning back. Told through a series of letters, post-its, and other increasingly crazed correspondence, “Hate Mail” follows Preston and Dahlia’s relationship as they move from hate to love, and then right back again. 1812 Productions’ staged reading of “Hate Mail” will take place on Monday, February 10 at 8:30 at The Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd Street in Old City. EDUCATION NEWS Devon Prep Runners Participate in New Balance Games in NYC
ne recent Saturday morning Devon Prep runners, Matthew McDevitt of Near 65th & Lansdowne • Phila Ber wyn, James O’Shea of Broomall, John Roth of Elverson and Lucas Watson of Exton, 215-879-3864 found themselves heading to an indoor www.pollysplayroom.com track meet that proved to be anything but typical. These members of Devon Prep’s 4 X 800 meter relay team were headed to New York City to participate in the prestigious New Balance Games at the historic Armory (www.armorytrack.com) in the heart of Washington Heights. More than 5000 high school athletes competed in the Games which took place in the Armory’s New Balance Track & Field Center, a 60,000-square-foot arena with an Olympic caliber track. The Center is widely regarded as one of the premier indoor track and field facilities on the East Coast, as well as in the United States. The Center has become a Mecca for track and field athletes from around the world while serving the students from all five boroughs of New York City. The Kal and Lucille Rudman Studio received a technological upgrade including digital consoles and state of the art computers thanks to a generous gift from the Kal and Lucille Lizzie Freilich, Sports Director and Charlie Newman, Program Director at Haverford Rudman Foundation last year. Lansdowne Friends School Marks Martin Luther King Day with Service L ansdowne Friends School celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with two projects in partnership with local organizations. On Monday, January 20, thirty-eight people of all ages gathered, donned gloves, and grabbed trash bags to clean up the school grounds, Lansdowne Avenue, Marlyn Park and Reservoir Park. The Darby Creek Valley Association provided trash bags, gloves and traffic vests, and the group filled twenty bags with trash collected during the day. Throughout the month of January, the kindergarten and third-fourth grade classes organized a drive to collect non-perishable food and toiletries for the Food Cupboard for the Southeast DELCO Ministerium. In early February the classes will carry donations to the Food Cupboard, located in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church of Lansdowne, right next door to the school. Classes begin Tuesday, February 18, featuring a diverse curriculum designed to appeal to the broad interests of the community. The adult school has joined with Main Line School Night in offering a several daytime classes. Memoir Writing, American Presidents, and Mommy and Baby exercise are offered at the Surrey Center in Havertown. The curriculum has been broadened to include an expanded music and arts program, featuring an a capella singing group, harmonica playing, guitar and ukulele classes. A tour of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is scheduled for May and an art appreciation class has been added. Basic Chinese is a new addition to the language program, and will feature acquiring language skills and an introduction to the culture and customs of China. The health and fitness program has added water aerobics and prenatal yoga along with favorites tai chi, Pilates, Zumba, yoga and meditation for a fusion of mind and body. For sports enthusiasts there is ice skating, tennis, basketball, golf, and volleyball. “Kidcaster” Search Looks for Next Generation Forecasters Kathy Orr and Weather Team to Hold Local Auditions oes your child have dreams of a career as a TV weathercaster? CBS 3 Meteorologist Kathy Orr is giving local youngsters a chance to show off their forecasting skills on television. Orr and the Eyewitness News weather team are hosting auditions for young broadcasters to audition at the “Kidcaster Search” Saturday, February 8, 12 noon to 3 p.m. in the Center Court at Plymouth Meeting Mall in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Orr, who has helped area teachers develop coursework for children in meteorology, began the program in 2004 to give area youngsters a chance to play TV weathercaster while encouraging their enthusiasm for science. CBS 3’s entire weather team – Meteorologists Kate Bilo, Katie Fehlinger, Carol Erickson and Justin Drabick – will join Orr in Plymouth Meeting for the auditions which are open to young people ages 6 to 16. The CBS 3 Mobile Weather Lab, the station’s weather station on wheels, will also be on location at the Mall, demonstrating the latest in weather technology. The best performances of the February 8 “Kidcaster” try-out will be featured on the early morning and 5 p.m. editions of Eyewitness News the week of February 17. Auditions will also be posted on www.CBSPhilly.com. Youngsters will be videotaped delivering a one-minute forecast on a simulated weather set. Immaculata Symphony Presents Walnut’s Independence Studio on 3 Continues with the Annual Youth Concert World Premiere of Eric Conger’s “Beautiful Boy” he Immaculata Symphony will hold its annual Youth Concert on Sunday, February 16, at 3:00 p.m. in Alumnae Hall on the campus of Immaculata University. The Immaculata Symphony is a university-community organization, with a long and outstanding tradition that goes back to the university’s founding in 1920. This year’s hilarious Youth Concert features the music of P.D.Q. Bach, supposedly the last and very least of Johann Sebastian Bach’s children (actually he is a fictitious composer invented by musical satirist “Professor” Peter Schickele. In a gag that Schickele has developed over a five-decadelong career, he performs “discovered” works of the “only forgotten son” of the Bach family). Joining in the fun are Robert Rossi on violin and the Russian violin virtuoso Ivan Peirotcik. Selected performances include A Grand, Grand Festival Overture, Konzertshtick for Two Violins mit Orchestra, and 1712 Overture. Gehring, music director and conductor for the Immaculata Symphony, Chester County Pops Orchestra, West Chester Band, and the Immaculata University Concert Band, is an active conductor, pianist, and educator. He is a frequent guest conductor of various honor/festival bands and orchestras throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware. He recently earned a Master of Music Performance degree in orchestral conducting. Cost for the concert is $10 for all adults and free for children under the age of 12. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. alnut Street Theatre’s 2013-2014 Independence Studio on 3 season continues with a World Premiere play by Eric Conger, “Beautiful Boy.” Directed by David Stradley, “Beautiful Boy” begins with previews on February 18, opens February 20 and continues through March 9 in the Walnut’s Independence Studio on 3. In “Beautiful Boy,” when Bill’s adoptive parents die and he is laid off from his job, he feels lost. His instinctive need to find out who he is and where he comes from grows stronger. The search for his birth parents takes him from Missouri to Connecticut. What he finds shocks and disturbs him, but is he disappointed? This funny, suspenseful play tackles the plight of grown children lost in a closed system, where parents’ rights trump their children’s need to know. Author Eric Conger debuted his first full-length play, The Eclectic Society, at the Walnut in 2010. He is thrilled to back with this new work, “Beautiful Boy.” Inspired by true events, this piece is personal for Conger, who notes “There is an Jeffrey element of longing within many adopted persons that grows into a primal quest for self-identity. The search for birth parents is fueled not only by a need for love, but by a desire for understanding in a physical sense. Who am I, where did I come from? This play explores one man’s journey toward himself. I hope it will give audiences a new appreciation of what it means to be adopted.” A graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Paris, Conger appeared on the Walnut stage in 1985 as Oliver in As You Like It, and on stages across the nation. Alto Saxophonist Tony Williams Featured in “Jazz, Jive and Praise” Cultural Arts Series Local Nonprofit Holding Fundraiser to Reunite Soldiers with T he incomparable alto saxophonist Tony Williams is the featured artist in the next “Jazz, Jive and Praise” Concert hosted at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 8, 2014. Mr. Williams moved to Philadelphia as a teenager and has become a household name in the region. He connected with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff in the early 70’s and is featured on saxophone and flute on Philly International hits with MFSB, Billy Paul, Blue Magic, Harold Melvin &The Blue Notes and the O’Jays. “Straight Ahead Jazz” is Mr. Williams’ love in the music genres. He formed his own ensembles and has continued to perform and record for over 50 years. He has recorded or performed with such notable artists as Nat “Cannonball” Adderley, Donald Byrd, Jean Carn, Daryl Hall, Lionel Hampton, Wynton Marsalis, Billy Paul and Grover Washington, Jr. Mr. Williams was part of the Bill Cosby band on his TV show. He also performs annually as part of the Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival with the Bill Cosby Reunion Band. In its third season, “Jazz, Jive and Praise.” is a Cultural Arts Series hosted by Tindley Temple United Methodist Church featuring noted jazz musicians from the Philadelphia region performing standard and original jazz arrangements every 2nd Sunday of every other month from September through June. he nonprofit No Dog Gets Left Behind will host a Valentine’s fundraiser on Saturday, February 22 at the DoubleTree Downtown Philadelphia from 7 - 11 p.m. The event will help the charity raise money to continue its mission of reuniting military members with war-torn pups they bonded with while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. No Dog Gets Left Behind provides financial support to reunite military personnel with the stray animals they found and bonded with while at war—a $4,500-per-pet proposition that includes vaccines, medical treatment, transportation to the U.S. and more. While the financial investment is high, the relief, comfort and joy this program provides soldiers is immeasurable, as these animals support military members and also help them readjust to civilian life. “Soldiers find companionship, hope, and a sense of normalcy that is otherwise missing in their lives by partnering with the canine companions they meet while deployed in a war zone,” said Trish Gohl, founder of No Dog Gets Left Behind. “In the soldier, the stray dog finds safety, comfort and an affection he’s never known. Throughout the days and months they are together, the soldier and canine form a remarkable bond made only stronger by the stresses of war; however, the bond breaks abruptly when the soldier’s tour of duty ends,” Gohl said. No Dog Gets Left Behind ensures that this special relationship does not have to end permanently. The main event will be held from 7-11 p.m. in the DoubleTree’s Symphony Ballroom and will feature live performances from the band POWERi and DJ Kevin Flanagan, raffle prizes as well as hors d’oeuvres. Each guest who brings a canned good to donate to Philabundance will receive

Additionally, supporters will have a chance to meet and take photos with the pups that have settled into American life with their battle buddy in the the hotel’s Overture Room. Canine VIP’s such as Roxy, who was rescued from Iraq, will attend the event. Along with providing comfort and love to a string of soldiers stationed in Iraq, Roxy also served as a devoted guard dog, barking and alerting soldiers to any intruders who came near them. Another four-legged VIP, Little Beethoven, will accompany her best friend, SGT T.J. The pair became best friends in Afghanistan. Named after the squad who ‘adopted her’, Lil B was reported to bring joy to the lives of the few in 1st squad 1st PLT. She is now enjoying the luxury of her new home in New Jersey. Roxy and Little Beethoven will join Stinky in the Overture Room. Stinky’s precarious life began in a warzone in Iraq; however, her American arrival story was covered on Fox National News with SGTs Danielle and Andrew by her side.
