Praised for his inventiveness and versatility, 22-year old pianist/composer Angelo Di Loreto is currently a second-year master’s student at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Most recently, he was a finalist in the 2012 Nottingham International Jazz Piano Competition in the UK. Phillips was not only the Philadel phia Orches tra’s first female member, but also the first woman to hold a principal position in any major orchestra in America. Phillips was just twentythree years old when she was Edna Phillips, the first female principal of a major American Orchestra (or the Philaplucked from delphia Orchestra). Blessed with a nimble wit and passion for music, Phillips not only survived, but thrived in the all-male world she entered – despite having to face hostility from her peers, skepticism from the public, unwanted amorous advances, and her own struggle to overcome a lack of experience and improve her playing. Welsh began working on the book as a memoir for Phillips in 1990, but put it aside when Phillips became ill several years later. After Phillips passed away in 2003, Welsh returned to the project, this time approaching the story as a biog-

Free Legal Advice Offered by Philadelphia Bar Association March 20 he Philadelphia Bar Association will offer free legal advice to residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties on Wednesday, March 20, between 5 and 8 p.m. Members of the public can access the service by calling the Association’s LegalLine P.M. hotline at 215-238-6333. Area residents seeking confidential legal advice will be able to speak for free with a volunteer attorney from the Philadelphia Bar Association. Attorneys are available to offer information about any aspect of the law including family law, landlord-tenant, workers’ compensation and employment law, among other topics. LegalLine P.M. is a public service sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association, providing residents with free, quick and accurate legal advice during convenient evening hours. LegalLine P.M. is offered on the third Wednesday of every month from 5 to 8 p.m. The program has existed for nearly 20 years, allowing volunteer attorneys to help thousands of callers through direct service or by referring them to an appropriate source. In addition, during regular work hours, the Philadelphia Bar Association offers another program – the Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) – which provides lawyer referrals to area residents. Staff attorneys take calls from the general public and refer callers to attorneys in private practice for a 30-minute consultation, for which the attorney agrees to charge a drastically reduced fee of $30. If callers do not need an attorney or cannot afford one, they will be directed to a legal service organization, agency or other resource for assistance. LRIS is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., by calling 215-238-6333. he 29th Annual Germantown Friends School Juried Craft Show opens this weekend with a special Preview Night Party on Friday, March 1, offering not only a first look at the world-class crafts exhibited by artists from across the nation but also a museum-like exhibit of local artists, including illustrations by three-time Caldecott Award-winning author and illustrator David Wiesner and renowned painter and photographer Stuart Shils. The evening will feature a silent auction that includes student art, student musical performances and food from “Catering by Amy.” Wiesner will display an image from his acclaimed book Art & Max, a story about two lizard artists – an expert and a novice – who take an artistic journey that runs wild through history’s venerated styles and concludes with a comic and colorful explosion of creative energy. “The painting I picked is dynamic,” Wiesner says. “The art is sort of blowing apart.” Shils will display his subtle yet haunting photographs. Images taken in an abandoned factory in Wayne Junction will be available for purchase in the silent auction. As a child, Shils admired the North Philly factories through the window of the R8 train between Mount Airy and Center City. His photographs capture both the energy of collapse and the tranquility of decay. “I’m interested in looking at the world of form and shape,” he explains. “One of my primary obsessions as a teacher is to convince students that you don’t have to go anywhere to see fantastic things. If you stop and look, you’ll notice that what is right in front of you is completely extraordinary.” Both gifted artists are GFS parents and eager to participate in the Craft Show, which raises money for the school’s scholarship programs. “[GFS] is this community that becomes a part of your life,” says Wiesner. “It’s nice to share what I have to offer.” Shils agrees: “It’s been a pleasure to watch the way the school formed my sons’ lives and taught them to look at the world. It is such a gift and I would give [the school] pictures every year if they wanted me to.” Wiesner and Shils will be joined at the show this year by 12 GFS photography students, who have donated signed, matted prints of their work to the silent auction. The photographs were created using the ancient technique of pinhole photography. The students used cameras made from pint-sized paint cans with photographic paper placed inside. GFS photography teacher Gary Miller explains, “Because an exposure can be anywhere from 712 seconds, students have to really think about how they are going to get the image that that they want. It gives the images a really interesting perspective; they look like something from the 1800s.” The GFS Craft Show Preview Night runs from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, March 1; Admission is $35 in advance and $40 at the door, and preview tickets are good all weekend. The show will continue on Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Sunday, March 3, 12 - 5 p.m. Admission on Saturday and Sunday is $10 per adult; students under 18 are free. Written by acclaimed producer and playwright, KJ Sanchez with Emily Ackerman of The Civilians company, “ReEntry” explores the challenges faced by Marines when re-entering family, community and country. Honest, moving and surprisingly funny, this play “shines a glaring spotlight on a serious national concern” with a “heightened level of authenticity” (New York Times). The multi-media piece is based entirely on interviews with Marines and their families, who discuss what it means for them or their loved ones to return from service. The piece was commissioned in 2009 and has been touring ever since. “ReEntry” has been used by the Department of Defense as a post-deployment training for service members. It has played at over 30 military bases and sites throughout the U.S. and internationally. “ReEntry” is presented in partnership with Penn Medicine. In recognition of our nation’s veterans, Penn Medicine participates in Joining Forces—a national initiative established by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to heighten awareness about the health needs of our nation’s veterans, service members and families as well as elevate the role that medical schools, nursing schools and teaching hospitals play in serving their community. Combat to Care, an extension of the national Joining Forces effort, is Penn Medicine’s campaign that celebrates the service of veteran faculty and staff; trains clinicians in the unique clinical challenges of caring for military service members, veterans and their families; and recruits veterans who have demonstrated inspiring dedication, loyalty and strength in the service of our nation to join Penn Medicine. H ABITAT FOR H UMANITY E VENT AT I MMACULATA U NIVERSITY n Saturday, March 9, over 300 5th graders will unveil a model of their dream home at Immaculata University at the 11th annual “Build A House…Build A Dream” competition. The event will be held in Alumnae Hall and Loyola Hall with children and their families arriving at 8 a.m. Final judging begins at 1 p.m. Fifth graders from across the Delaware Valley work individually or in teams to build their own three-dimensional, model dream home and bring it to the contest for display and judging. Participating students’ imaginative, colorful designs reflect their far-ranging interests and the issues that concern them. Approximately 30 judges will narrow the field down to 10 finalists. All participants receive recognition for their efforts and the top winners earn cash prizes. In addition, several Immaculata University students, faculty, and staff will serve as volunteers for the day. The goal of the event is to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing and funds for local Habitat homebuilding programs for low income families in Philadelphia, Camden, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties. NSA Offers Accounting Scholarships NSA Scholarship Foundation Now Accepting Applications for 2013 Scholarships he National Society of Accountants (NSA) Scholarship Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for its 2013-2014 program from promising accounting students across the country. The Foundation awards scholarships to undergraduates who are U.S. or Canadian citizens enrolled part-time or full-time in an accounting degree program at an accredited two- or four-year college or university. Since its formation in 1969 the NSA Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $1 million to dedicated students pursuing a career in the accounting profession. Applicants for awards are judged on the basis of scholastic achievement, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, honors, and work experience. They must have a “B” (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better grade point average. Scholarships typically range from $500 - $2,000 and 30 or more scholarships are awarded each year. Scholarship applications must be postmarked by March 10, 2013 and sent to Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America, which manages the application process. For students nearing graduation or new to the accounting profession, the Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation (ACAT), which is affiliated with NSA, offers an Accredited Business Accountant® (ABA) credential. T HE G LADWYNE L IBRARY L EAGUE S PONSORS A NNUAL A RTS AND C RAFTS S HOW he Gladwyne Library League’s 2013 Arts and Crafts Show will open Monday, March 4 with an Opening Night Preview Party from 7 to 9 pm at the Gladwyne Library, 362 Righters Mill Road. The public is invited to attend this preview reception in the Community Room. The show will continue through March 9 during regular library hours. The show is a long-standing community favorite event which features Lower Merion professional and non-professional artists and crafters. Children of all ages are encouraged to participate. Selected local accomplished and professional artists jury the entries and award “Judges Choice” awards in each category. A portion of the proceeds from any sales will benefit programs at the Gladwyne Library. Show categories include painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and needlework. In addition, there will be a large variety of crafts including jewelry, pottery, decoupage, woodworking, weaving, rugs, basketry, etc. All paintings and photographs must be framed or mounted, wired and ready to be hung. Entries in the painting and photography categories are limited to three items per artist. The exhibitors must be Lower Merion residents or owners of a Lower Merion Library card. Entries should be brought to the library Thursday, February 28, 5 - 8 p.m.; Friday, March 1, 3 - 5 p.m.; or Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m. - noon. Show brochures and entry forms can be picked up at the library in advance. Adults will be charged $1 per entry item. Library Hosts Small Business Seminars with Chester County SCORE hester County SCORE and Tredyffrin Public Library are teaming up to offer professional business seminars for entrepreneurs and small business owners. SCORE, a nonprofit organization of volunteer business professionals, will lead two sessions at the library, 582 Upper Gulph Road, Strafford: “How to Start a Business” and “Emerging Trends and Their Impact on Local Business.” The first course, “How to Start a Business,” scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 6-8 p.m., is designed to familiarize entrepreneurs with the concept and terminology needed in the startup and daily operations of a small business. Topics include: selecting a business structure, partnership & shareholder agreements, contracts, hiring subcontractors vs. employees, liability insurance, and obtaining financing. Leading the “How to Start a Business” seminar is Frank P. Next, the library will offer “Emerging Trends and their Impact on Local Businesses” on Tuesday, April 9, 6-8 p.m. This course deals with adapting a business strategy to the changes in economic, social, technological and energy trends as they pertain to Pennsylvania and Chester County. anet Whitman and the Brandywine Harp Orchestra bring their talents to Neumann University’s Cultural Arts Forum on Thursday, March 7 at 1:30 p.m. America’s premier harp orchestra brings out their Celtic Connections, a concert filled with Irish and Scottish traditional and contemporary music. From airs to lilting jigs and foot stomping reels, their director, Janet Whitman, a National Scottish Harp Champion, will delight the audience with this talented and unique ensemble of 11 harpers and singers. The ensemble was organized in 2000 and consists of harpers of diverse ages with seasoned harp skills and extensive musical background from the Brandywine Valley or Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Their programs feature the many talents of its members, which include choreographed dancing, solo and choral singing, poetry, percussion, storytelling and original compositions. In 2009, they were the first American Celtic harp orchestra to perform at the Edin burgh International Harp Festival in the festival’s 29-year history. For 37 years, the Cultural Arts Forum has been sponsoring events to support adult women students at Neumann University through the endowed scholarship named in honor of the founder of the Forum, Margaret Mary Kearney.
