Israeli Film Festival Comes to Philadelphia in March he Israeli Film Festival of Philadelphia marks its 17th year of celebrating Israeli culture and society through cinema. This year’s varied program of feature films and documentaries will be performed at several venues throughout the Philadelphia area from March 2 through March 17. The festival kicks off on Saturday, March 2, 8 p.m., with the screening of “The World is Funny” and an opportunity to meet the film’s director, Shemi Zarhin at a special reception following the movie at the International House, 3701 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. The cost of admission is $18 per person, $15 for seniors. The film, which like most of the festival offerings is pre-

sented in Hebrew with English subtitles, has been nominated for 15 awards by the Israeli Film Academy. It documents the misadventures of three estranged siblings whose lives are changed by the unveiling of some long-buried family secrets. Scene from the film “The World is Funny.” The movie will be shown again on Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. at the International House, preceding a free screening of three short films produced by students at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Film and Television. Highly recommended.” The basis for the book came about when Porter and his freshman college roommate watched Pat Robertson’s 700 Club TV show in the early ’70s to laugh at the bizarre rantings, never dreaming that this was the first wave of a tide of fundamentalism that would sweep the nation. In medical school, Porter was required to do a community research project, so he elected to study faith healing. Gaining entry to one of the new local charismatic churches through a member who was an old acquaintance, Porter attended several services and interviewed the healing minister. Needless to say, this was not appreciated by the church, but gave Porter a new understanding of the depth of religious fervor coming over America. Purim at Temple Beth Hillel – Beth El urim is a great time to be a part of the Temple Beth Hillel – Beth El (TBH-BE) community. There are programming and great experiences for people of all ages. A community Megillah reading will be held at 7 p.m. with a costume parade for all of the little ones. The TBH-BE Havurah will hold a separate Megillah reading and Purim Shpiel at 7:30 p.m. There is truly something for everyone on Saturday night! r. Daisy Century performed a dramatic portrayal of Harriet Tubman’s life and her humanitarian efforts to rescue slaves using the Underground Railroad on February 13. Third- fourth- and fifth-graders from The Haverford School, The Agnes Irwin School, Rosemont School of the Holy Child, and Friends School Haverford watched history come alive as Dr. Century took them on a journey with Harriet Tubman, who was born into slavery as Araminta Ross in 1820 (she later changed her first name to Harriet, after her mother), escaped, and during a 10-year span, made more than 19 trips into the South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom. The Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools sponsored the event.

History Brought Alive Musically at Underground Railroad Site A dramatic episode in Philadelphia history brought to life through music and performed in Philadelphia’s only intact, accessible stop on the Underground Railroad magine the fear that gripped the inhabitants of the Johnson House when federal marshals came looking for escaped slaves traveling along the Underground Railroad. On Sunday, February 24, 2013, the public will experience the powerful story of just such a moment in history. Commonwealth Youthchoirs will host three performances of “The Good Raised Up: A Story of Community, Integrity, and the Road to Freedom.� The choral work will be performed by young singers from Keystone State Boychoir, Pennsylvania Girlchoir and Find Your Instrument! Choir. The performances, at 2:00, 2:45, and 3:30 p.m., are made possible by support from PNC Arts Alive, and admission is free. GFS Craft Show Features Talented GFS Parents and teacups for the fourth year. Fuld is participating in the show for the first time this year. “It’s been a lot of babycare in the last few years,” she says with a laugh, “so this is my time to get back into the studio and work—and it feels great!” Living in Philadelphia has influenced Fuld’s work. “I make furniture on the smaller side to fit into a city home, that addresses a functional need and makes a quiet impression by combining elegant forms with saturated, at times bold, color.” Her furniture, including benches, tables, stools, mirrors and coat hangers, all reflect her signature simple, natural style. “My work is very organic,” she says. “It’s soft and smooth.” For Chang, clay work started as a hobby—but quickly became more. ave you ever wondered why jellyfish have tentacles? Just ask a pre-kindergarten student at Lansdowne Friends School. Or have you ever wondered about how a seahorse protects itself? Just ask a first or second grade student. Ask a kindergarten student about the deep dark layers of the ocean outside their classroom or a third or fourth grader about bioluminescence or the food chain. Next time you enjoy calamari think squid and think about fifth and sixth grade students at Lansdowne Friends School dissecting a squid. Lansdowne Friends School was transformed for two weeks in late January and early February while the whole school studied the diversity of life in the ocean. The All-School Theme, an annual occurrence, provided lots of opportunities for collaborations between classrooms, as well as all-school collaborations. The school’s gym gradually became an underwater world as students integrated art and shop skills with their new science and math studies. Art teacher Shelley Marcus coordinated a creative representation of human beings’ effect on the ocean’s health. Shop teacher Al Gaspar coordinated the elaborate construction of a coral reef. First and second grade teachers Jill Bean and Susie Hollenbach led the school in the construction of a larger-than-life kelp forest. Kindergarteners conducted primary research about the ocean during a wintry trip to the New Jersey coast. Fifth and sixth graders wrote, illustrated and recorded an online presentation on their study of the relationships among horseshoe crabs, red knot birds, and people. The project leads into the older students’ continued study of red knot migration that will include a camping trip to New Jersey to witness the migration, and the chance to raise chicks.

ebruary is National Heart Month, and Main Line Health kicked off its month-long celebration to improve awareness about women and heart disease risks by crowning their Queen of Hearts at center court at the February 1 Sixers Game at the Wells Fargo Center. The Queen of Hearts campaign recognizes a local woman for her commitment to raising awareness of heart disease and demonstrating a heart-healthy lifestyle. The 2013 Queen of Hearts, Elizabeth McDermott of Wynnewood, PA, is a survivor of heart disease. At 32 weeks into her pregnancy, McDermott experienced heart failure and complications that had her fighting for her life in Lankenau Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit. A cardiac nurse at Lankenau, McDermott is aware of the risks of heart disease, yet never thought it could happen to her. Philadelphia Mummers Dazzle with Captivating Performances in Atlantic City on February 23 he world-renowned String Bands of the Philadelphia Mummers Parade will travel to Atlantic City to present the annual “Show of Shows” at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, February 23 at 3 p.m. The encore performance of the time-honored New Year’s Day tradition is a dazzling display of the vibrant, sequin-studded costumes and intricate harmonies of the String Bands. Featuring sportscaster Michael Barkann of Comcast Sports Network as volunteer emcee, the black-tie gala raised funds for Haddonfield, NJ-based Bancroft’s programs for people with autism, acquired brain injuries and other intellectual or developmental disabilities. The Ball spotlighted several business and community leaders, who received special awards during the festivities. The prestigious Margaret Bancroft Award was presented to Barbara and Sheldon Berkman of Hopewell Township, NJ, for their exemplary support of people with disabilities. The award is named for Bancroft’s founder. The Corporate and Community Leadership Award was presented to TD Bank and Rob Curley, TD’s South Jersey Market President, for their outstanding commitment to Bancroft over many years. Nimrod Speaks has been playing acoustic and electric bass for more than half of his 30 years. He started playing electric bass in high school, mentored by Ricardo Jackson, and took up the acoustic instrument during his first semester at Kutz town University. He eventually graduated Kutztown with a B.A. in Music Education, and later earned a Masters in Jazz Studies from Rutgers University. Along the way, he studied with giants such as Mike Richmond, Victor Lewis and Stanley Cowell. His versatility in a wide range of styles, large, warm and soulful tone; and heavy, blues—tinged groove contributed to making Speaks a certifiably in-demand player, backing the likes of John Swana, Jimmy Owens, Scott Wendholt, and Rachel Z, among many others.
