f you have ever visited the Penn Museum, then the cover and inside art of re nowned bass clarinetist Todd Marcus’ new jazz CD recording, Inheritance, may strike a resonant chord. That’s because the album photography was shot in the Penn Museum’s Egypt Gallery. Rated one of the Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2012 by NPR’s Patrick Jarenwattananon, Inheritance has garnered sparkling reviews since it was released in October. Still, as the Todd Marcus Quartet continues the album’s tour at a special concert at the Penn Museum Wednesday, February 20, at 6:30 p.m., it will be a memorable night for the lead musician.

10% oFF yoUR PURCHase Bargain Book Warehouse Wynnewood Shopping Center hina-born Lampo Leong, a master of Chinese calligraphy and internationally acclaimed for the power and color of his abstract canvasses, brings his East/West fusion art to the Philadelphia area with his upcoming exhibit at the Villanova University Art Gallery. “Calligraphic Inspiration: The Art of Lampo Leong” opens Friday, February 22. The public is invited to watch and hear the artist at work in a free demonstration of his calligraphy and talk at 3 p.m. in Connelly Center Cinema. A free public reception to meet the artist follows in the Gallery, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will feature some 30 abstract paintings, oils, acrylics and mixed media on canvas, along with his calligraphy in ink on rice-paper. “Bombardments of color and form,” “transcendent,” “luminous,” “a celebration of energy beyond the visible world,” are among reviewers’ descriptions of Leong’s canvasses. Art historian and curator Josienne Piller calls his art transformative: “Leong’s work deconstructs calligraphy and reintegrates the resulting fragments into a unified whole that transcends cultural boundaries. This process of transformation creates hybrid works that conjure up what appear to be phantasmagoric images of the natural world.” Calligraphy has stood as the core expression of the beauty, strength and vibrancy of China’s culture and the daily lives of its people for more than 5,000 years. The cursive script, called by some the impressionistic art of Chinese calligraphy, was introduced some 1,600 years ago to allow artists greater freedom of line movement. The ‘wild’ cursive became an extended manifestation of that freedom. Once Leong completes a calligraphic work intended for a painting, he tears up the rice paper and rearranges its inked pieces to create line and form devoid of linguistic meaning. “These recombined parts, from shattered Chinese characters and the broken cursive calligraphic strokes, provide a structure and rhythm for my painting,” explains Leong. Next, he transfers images into digital files where they can be manipulated and photography introduced “to create a sense of grandeur.” Thence begins a long and involved computer-aided creative journey that encompasses the application of hundreds of layers of acrylic and oil paints and the creation of canvasses up to 46 by 72 inches in size, hopefully devoid of cultural bias. Leong grew up in China during the ‘Cultural Revolution’ of Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong, a period (1964-1976) when anti-intellectualism thrived, universities were closed, and artists, including school students, were put to work in support of government propaganda campaigns. A young teen at the time who was expected to pitch in, Leong also remained committed to his art and vision. As expected, he did propaganda art, but he also used the opportunity to study painting and drawing. “One can use such an opportunity to study art or just waste a lot of time. I am one of those who always tries to get the most out of any situation, no matter how difficult,” says Leong. In 1983, Leong left China for the United States where he earned, with ‘High Distinction’, a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. He also received a Doctorate in Art Theory and Practice from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. He is currently a Professor of Art at the University of Missouri– Columbia. A multimedia artist who has collaborated with dancers and composers, his reach as artist, visionary, and teacher is international. Among his over 400 exhibits around the world, more than 60 have been solo shows. His art is collected in numerous museums and more than 70 public and corporate collections; his name is included in more than 90 biographical references. “Calligraphic Inspiration: The Art of Lampo Leong” continues to April 18. The Villanova University Art Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For weekend and extended hours, and other information, telephone the Art Gallery at 610-519-4612. Selected works of the Lampo Leong exhibit may be previewed at www.artgallery.villanova.edu.

duction will be presented at NCT’s temporary new venue, Stage One Performing Arts Complex in Wallingford, PA. Social injustice, corporate greed and political corruption are lampooned in this Tony Award winning musical satire about a drought-plagued town where water is so scarce that private toilets have become unthinkable. At the mercy of a single dominating corporation that maintains a monopoly on public amenities, the destitute citizens must pay towering taxes to carry out their most basic of needs. Out of the mass of the pitiable, a hero rises to lead his fellow citizens against the tyrannical regime. Drawing comedically from West Side Story and Les Misérables, among others, and filled with fun song and dance, “Urinetown” pays witty homage to the great American musical theatre tradition. Paul Recupero directs, supported by an experienced production team that includes Music Directors Barbara Newberry and Konnie Stark, Choreographer Kim Albright, Producer Susan Davit, Stage Manager Brenna McBride, Master Carpenter Michael Avis, Costumer Faithe Hornung, and Props Mistress Judy Rodes. The show’s versatile ensemble cast, many of whom play multiple roles, features 22 talented performers from across the Greater Philadelphia area, including: Brittany Adams, Steve Arcidiacono, Chris Bartholomew, Liz Brennan, Shana Burstein, Alicia Crosby, Justin Damm, Steve DiNenno, Joe Gribbin, Bobby Hayes, Jim Hopper, Jeff Hunsicker, Linda Hunt, Aimee Kerr, Ben Potts, Jessica Potts, Tom Purnell, Kate Reynolds, Becca Schiel, Barbara Sherman, Tom Stumme and Liz Wheeler. Stage One Performing Arts Complex is located just outside Media at 101 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, PA. NCT is excited to continue to present professional-caliber productions at its new venue.

he Delaware Valley Science Fairs (DVSF) is seeking healthcare professionals, college professors, engineers, scientists, environmentalists and graduate students to join over 400 of your colleagues to judge one of the most important STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education programs in the Delaware Valley. Judging takes place on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA and is a fullday commitment. Instruction and support are provided, as well as continental breakfast and lunch. Moreover, it provides professionals an opportunity to see how STEM education is progressing in our schools and to contribute to that process. “A few minutes of professional contact with a student-scientist or engineer may make a lifetime of difference in their career. It’s essential for students to meet other professionals in the field because that experience enriches their education,” says DVSF President Henry Disston. “Our mission is to bring parents, teachers and industry together to stimulate and nurture young people so that they grow and develop into contributing members of the community.” Now in its 65th year, DVSF features independent research projects in 15 scientific categories by students in grades 6-

T

12, who have won at their local fairs in the tri-state area. An estimated 1,000 students will be participating. Nearly $3 million in scholarship and prize money will be awarded at DVSF. Past winning research projects include cancer research, mathematics and physics theory, engineering projects, and microbiology research, to name a few. Winners from DVSF are awarded a trip to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona in May. Last year, a DVSF winner captured one of the 14 grand prizes awarded at ISEF. Those interested in judging are urged to visit the Delaware Valley Science Fairs Web site, www.dvsf.org or call Henry Disston at: 215-895-5840. Since 1949, the Delaware Valley Science Fairs have stimulated interest in science, engineering and technology among middle and high school students in the tri-state region. DVSF’s philosophy is that students learn science by doing science. Its mission is to bring together parents, teachers and industry leaders to motivate and nurture young people’s curiosity in science and problem solving as we build lifelong learners. For information, visit www.DVSF.org or call 215-895-5840.

MCCC Selected to Participate in National AACC Initiative Focusing on Adult Learners ontgomery County Community College (MCCC), with campuses in Blue Bell and Pottstown, PA, joins the American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, which looks to train 10,000 baby boomers over the next three years for high-demand jobs. MCCC is one of 17 new community colleges to be selected for the program, and is one of 28 institutions nationally chosen to participate. Several community partners, including the Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board, the Upper Perkiomen Valley Chamber of Commerce, and The Reserve at Gwynedd, endorsed MCCC’s participation in the initiative and have agreed to serve in an advisory capacity. According to AACC, plus 50 adults comprise a growing population interested in returning to school. Community colleges are in a unique position to serve plus 50 learners because of proximity, flexible hours and diverse programs tailored to local demand. By participating in the Plus 50 Encore Program, MCCC will provide a dedicated academic advisor who specializes in working with older adults and identify programs that help these learners launch a second career. The College will also further strengthen its Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process model to improve adult student enrollment and persistence rates. PLA is the process by which colleges evaluate a student’s

M

life experience to determine if prior learning can be translated into college credits. Assessments may include evaluation of corporate or military training as established by the American Council on Education (ACE); review of student portfolios; customized tests to prove prior learning meets specific exit standards for courses; and examination of non-credit courses to document content for transferability to for-credit courses. Results from a report from the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning show that students with PLA credits had better academic outcomes, better degree completion, better persistence, and shorter time to completion than nonPLA students. The Plus 50 Encore Completion Program is funded with a $3.2 million grant to AACC provided by Deerbrook Charitable Trust. The Plus 50 Encore Completion program supports AACC’s work to increase the number of students who finish degrees, certificates, and other credentials. In April 2010, AACC committed alongside other higher education organizations, to promote the development and implementation of policies, practices and institutional cultures that will produce 50 percent more students with high quality degrees and certificates by 2020. MCCC also committed to this pledge. For information about the Plus 50 Initiative at AACC, visit http://plus50.aacc.nche.edu.

GET READY FOR CAMP MMA Holds Shakespeare Competition he English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition is a school-based program designed to help high school students develop their speaking and critical thinking skills and their appreciation of literature as they explore the beauty of the language and the timeless themes in Shakespeare works. In the competition, students read, interpret, and perform monologues and sonnets in three qualifying stages—at the school, community, and national levels. Merion Mercy Academy held its competition on Tuesday. The top-four honorees were Liz Duska, first place, Mariana Capizzi, second place, Greta Bradbury, third place, and Katie Dolan, honorable mention. MMA winner, senior Liz Duska will move on to the Philadelphia Branch Competition at the Arden Theatre later this month.

Harcum College to Host “The Butterfly Project arcum College invites students and area residents to attend a free performance of The Butterfly Project on March 12, 2013. “The Butterfly Project, presented by Wolf Performing Arts Center of Narberth, will be performed at the Kevin D. Marlo Little Theatre at 7 p.m. Based on the book “I Never Saw Another Butterfly by Celeste Raspanti, the play spreads the message of hope through art, poetry, music and live performance. Children ages 12 and up are welcome and encouraged to attend. More than 15,000 children passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp during the Holocaust, yet fewer than 100 survived. Illustrating the importance of diversity, strength and survival, “The Butterfly Project honors the memory of these children by bringing their poetry and artwork to life. The play offers audience members the opportunity to discuss the performance with the cast and to create one of the 15,000 hand-crafted butterflies to be collected throughout the duration of the project; each butterfly is meant to signify one child who passed through Terezin. “The Butterfly Project began on Holocaust Remembrance Day in April 2012. By creating awareness of the children who passed through Terezin, The Butterfly Project strives to shine light on the message of hope while ensuring today’s children serve as witnesses for the next generation. Following the performance, there will be a discussion with a Holocaust survivor or a concentration camp liberator. For info, call 610-526-6038 or e-mail Laurie Plaza at lplaza@harcum.edu.

Routine Eye Exams with an Ophthalmologist Can Save Your Vision ebruary is Save Your Vision Month, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO) reminds Pennsylvania residents that a baseline eye disease screening at age 40 is critical to preserving healthy vision. Early signs of eye disease and changes in vision may start to occur around age 40, and even those with perfect vision should be screened at that time. People with eye disease symptoms or risk factors should also be screened. It is estimated that by 2020, 43 million Americans will face significant vision loss or blindness from age-related eye diseases, such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Despite these trends, many Americans remain unaware of the dangers of vision loss. A survey conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology reveals that less than a quarter of Americans (23 percent) are very concerned about losing their vision, while a majority feel weight gain or joint and back pain are of greater concern than vision loss. “Unfortunately, millions of people will suffer significant vision loss and blindness because they don’t know the risks or don’t get a routine eye exam when they should,” said Roger Zelt, MD, PAO President. “Vision impairment from eye disease can impact your ability to function independently and eventually lead to permanent blindness. That is why it’s so important to catch eye disease early through comprehensive eye exams.”

F

To detect eye diseases early, before vision is lost, the American Academy of Ophthalmology offers the following sightsaving recommendations: • Get a comprehensive eye exam if you experience symptoms or have risk factors for eye disease, such as diabetes or a family history of eye disease. • Get a baseline eye exam by age 40, even if your vision seems perfect. This is the age when early signs of eye disease may begin to occur. • Schedule an eye exam every 1 - 2 years if you are age 65 or older. Based on the results of an initial screening, an ophthalmologist – an eye physician and surgeon – will determine the necessary intervals for follow-up exams. For information about eye disease risk factors or to find an ophthalmologist near you, visit www.geteyesmart.org. Find an Eye M.D. in your area by visiting www.paeyemds.org. The Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology has been working to preserve and protect vision and eye health for Pennsylvania’s citizens since 1943. With member physicians throughout the Commonwealth, the PAO strives to be the voice of ophthalmology; making efforts to ensure quality eye care on the legislative and regulatory fronts, while building and maintaining relationships with major insurance carriers within the state. Walnut’s Independence Studio on 3 Presents Vincent in Brixton alnut Street Theatre’s 2012-2013 Independence Studio on 3 season continues with Nicholas Wright’s artful, award-winning play, Vincent in Brixton. Directed by Kate Galvin, the production begins with previews on February 19, opens February 21 and continues through March 10 in the Walnut’s Independence Studio on 3. Inspired by actual events, a young Vincent Van Gogh arrives in Brixton, England as an art dealer. He falls in loveat-first-sight with a beautiful young woman. Her mother has a room for rent, which Vincent gladly accepts. His journey of self-discovery begins as he finds genuine inspiraBrian Cowden and Mary Martello in “Vincent in Brixton” at tion from his landlady, her Walnut Street Theatre. Photo/Ali Nebistinsky. daughter and a fellow boarder, a struggling artist who sees beauty in everyday objects. This house is full of secrets and as Van Gogh begins to see things in new ways, his destructive nature takes hold and a brilliant artist emerges. Vincent in Brixton premiered in London at The Royal National Theatre’s Cottesloe Theatre in 2002. The American premiere came in 2003 when it was presented by Lincoln Center Theater at John Golden Theatre. The play was nominated for the 2003 Tony Award for Best Play and won the Olivier Award for Best Play that same year. It was also televised on BBC4 Television in 2003. Vincent in Brixton was written by British playwright Nicholas Wright. Wright began his career in theatre as a child actor training at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He was the first director of the Theatre Upstairs at London’s Royal Court Theatre, where he later became joint artistic director with Robert Kidd. He joined the National Theatre as Literary Manager in 1984 and was an Associate Director until 1998. He then became a full-time playwright, with numerous works including The Reporter, The Last Duchess and his newest work, Traveling Light, which premiered in 2012. At the helm of the production is Director Kate Galvin. Galvin returns after last season’s hit production of Proof, which toured nationally after its run at the Walnut. She has directed for the 11th Hour Theatre Company and the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and was assistant director for The Philadelphia Story; O Captain, My Captain: Whitman’s Lincoln and The Prince at the Walnut. The cast of Vincent in Brixton incudes Brian Cowden as Vincent Van Gogh, Liz Filios as Anna Van Gogh, John Jarboe as Sam Plowman and Mary Martello as Ursula Loyer. A University of the Arts alum, Cowden returns to the Walnut having played Oliver Nash in world premiere of The Eclectic Society. Filios was last seen in Aspects of Love and Joarboe was last seen in Love Story at the Walnut. Martello recently performed as Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man. Audiences will also remember this award-winning actress from Walnut productions of Oliver!, Les Misérables and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Philadelphia-based actor Clare Mahoney will make her Walnut debut as Eugenie Loyer. PlayPenn Announces New Workshops on Playwriting and Acting Registration now open with classes beginning March 9, April 22, and June 10 layPenn, Philadelphia’s professional new play development organization, is offering three workshops this spring with playwright Lisa Kron, actor Dan Hodge, and dramaturg Michele Volansky. Each class is limited to ten participants. All workshops will be held at the CultureWorks Coworking Space, 1315 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA. Obie-award-winning playwright Lisa Kron comes to Philadelphia to teach a brand new workshop, “What Makes This Medium Different Than All Other Mediums.” What happens on a stage that can’t happen anywhere else? How does theater differ from other narrative forms? What is the source of its particular power and electricity? In this course participants will look to craft for an answer. Participants will identify certain unique and essential qualities of their form and explore how how to manifest those qualities in their writing to unleash true theatrical dynamism. Through a series of linked conceptual and practical exercises, students will illuminate the deepest mechanics of theatrical action and generate new pages of vivid writing for the stage. “What Makes This Medium Different Than All Other Mediums” will run Saturday, March 9, from noon - 6 p.m. Tuition is $280. Barrymore-award-winning actor Dan Hodge returns to PlayPenn this April to teach PlayPenn’s first acting class “The Character on the Page: Acting and the New Play.” How is working on a new play different? How do you make bold and specific character choices even as the script is changing daily? This workshop will focus on techniques to mine the text for information about characters and situations. By knowing what to look for, you can create characters quickly and intelligently based on information the playwright has imbedded in the script. Identifying the writer’s intent is key to helping you set aside your own preconceptions about a work and engage with a wide range of roles whether or not you deem yourself “right” for the part. This workshop will involve in-class scene work that will stretch your understanding of yourself as an actor and illuminate aspects of characters and scripts that you never expected. “The Character on the Page: Acting and the New Play” will take place on Mondays, April 22 and 29, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Tuition is $195. PlayPenn Artistic Associate and Conference Dramaturg Michele Volansky reprises her popular class “Spring Plantings: A Practical Workshop on Inspiration” in June. What are the tools necessary to make a play grow – effective dialogue, a gripping story, compelling characters? All three and more? This workshop will address inspiration as viewed through plot, conflict, character motivation, and dialogue as we investigate the many ways a work of theater can emerge. Start off the season by digging into new projects, and energize your projects-in-progress with new ways of thinking about the essential elements of the craft. Writers at all levels of experience will have the opportunity to share their work in a supportive and challenging environment. “Spring Plantings: A Practical Workshop on Inspiration” will run Mondays, June 10, 17, and 24, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Tuition is $275. “As PlayPenn continues to nurture playwrights across the country through our annual conference, we are committed to supporting Philadelphia's growing playwriting community,” says PlayPenn Artistic Director Paul Meshejian. “We invite the most exciting and successful theatrical voices to share their talent and craft directly with students in an intimate class setting.” 2012-2013 is PlayPenn’s third year offering classes for students at all levels of expertise. Guest teachers have included Craig Lucas, Lee Blessing, Michael Hollinger, JT Rogers, and Bruce Graham, among others. For information or to register for classes, visit www.playpenn.org, or contact Director of Educational Programs Sarah Mantell at classes@playpenn.org.
