“Zanele Muholi & The Women’s Mobile Museum” Exhibit

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) presents “Zanele Muholi & The Women’s Mobile Museum,” one of four culminating exhibitions of a year-long artist residency connecting acclaimed South African photographer Zanele Muholi and the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC) with ten Philadelphia women. The exhibition, which also features new works created in Philadelphia by Muholi and South African teaching artist Lindeka Qampi, challenges the social and economic barriers of the art world while supporting emerging artists and reaching new audiences. In addition to the works by Muholi and Qampi, this exhibition features work by Afaq, Shasta Bady, Davelle Barnes, Tash Billington, Iris Maldonado, Danielle Morris, Shana-Adina Roberts, Carrie Anne Shimborski, Muffy Ashley Torres, and Andrea Walls. The multi-neighborhood traveling exhibition throughout Philadelphia this fall and winter asks the question: Who is art for? The exhibition is on view at PAFA from December 22, 2018 - March 31, 2019 in the Richard C. von Hess Foundation Works on Paper Gallery. Wistar hosts top winners of the 2018 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. See captivating images from the 2018 Nikon Small World competition of photomicrography. These photographs taken through microscopes will be on display at The Wistar Institute, with an opening reception on January 18, 2019. At Wistar, researchers look through microscopes and hypothesize over microscopic images with the goal of advancing cancer and infectious disease research to develop future therapeutics. Winning photographers this year are both scientists and artists possessing the consummate skill, scientific discipline and creativity for which the Nikon Small World competition is known. Small World spans 44 years as a leading, global competition for photomicrography. This year’s images were chosen from more than 2,500 entries from 89 countries. Wistar has been hosting the exhibit for more than 15 years. From January 21 through April 5, 2019, the top-20 images will be on view at Wistar and the exhibit is FREE to the public. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INVITED TO ENTER PHILADELPHIA YOUTH FILM FESTIVAL he 2019 Philadelphia Youth Film Festival (PHYFF) is now open for submissions from creative high school students in the Greater Philadelphia area and beyond. Founded in 2017 by Germantown Friends School (GFS) students to increase accessibility for film sharing and critique, PHYFF continues to be a free festival dedicated to helping teenagers find their voice in a rapidly expanding and influential community. This student-run festival is a great opportunity for young filmmakers to show off their work and gain feedback, as well as make connections with peers. Films can be developed on any medium, including a phone, in a studio, or on a computer, and entry categories include: Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Screenplay and Experimental/Other. Films will be judged by experts on a variety of factors, including creativity, scripting, messaging and meaning, design, and execution. The festival will conclude with a day of workshops, networking, screenings, and an awards ceremony on February 23, 2019 on GFS’ campus in Philadelphia. “We’re creating a space where high school students can collaborate with industry professionals to gain confidence in their filmmaking talents, without needing to compete with college-level productions who have access to expensive equipment,” said Noah Weintstein, co-director of the PHYFF and senior at GFS. Raia Stern, also a co-director and senior at GFS, added, “We want to support students throughout the city who may not have access to extensive film programs or professional equipment, but who have a vision for a film they feel needs to be seen.” Creative Outfit, owned by 2007 GFS graduate Alex Favin, is an event sponsor. Favin wants to give back to creative students like he was back in high school. “I’m proud to support the Philadelphia Youth Film Festival as someone who went to grade school and college in this community,” said Favin. “Storytelling is a powerful tool for communication that filmmakers need to foster. “O LEANNA ” AT THE WALNUT S TREET T HEATRE Continued from front page

Due to the debate, and the media’s explicit coverage of the scandal, a significant number of liberal women were elected to Congress in 1992 – with many labelling it “The Year of the Woman.” “It is no coincidence that Oleanna premiered one year after the October 1991 Anita Hill hearings,” noted director Debi Marcucci. “To re-examine this piece, now decades later through today’s lens is not only exceedingly timely, relevant and poignant, but also an essential exploration of power, gender, and sexual dynamics of the universal human condition.” OLEANNA premiered in 1992 in Massachusetts at David Mamet’s Back Bay Theater Company. The show was directed by Mamet himself and featured his wife, Rebecca Pidgeon, in the role of Carol. That October, a year after the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings, the show appeared Off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre. In this production, a fiery rewritten third act was added, causing New York Times critic Frank Rich to note that “Oleanna is likely to provoke more arguments than any play this year.” In 1993, the show premiered in London, under the direction of Harold Pinter. The next year, Mamet wrote and directed his own film adaptation of the show, which used the tagline “Whatever side you take...you’re wrong.” The show made its Broadway debut in 2009 at the John Golden Theatre. The Walnut Street Theatre’s production of OLEANNA is being performed 26 years after the original, though due to many recent events the social and political climate has once again become similar to that surrounding the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings. In fact, 2018 was also named “Year of the Woman,” after the Women’s March, #MeToo Movement, and pushback from the Brett Kavanagh Supreme Court nomination hearings prompted a historical victory for women in the November Congress, Senate, and Governor mid-term elections. With the Kavanagh hearing at the forefront of the nation’s mind, Mamet’s play of gender politics and “he-said, she-said” gains new significance as men and women both must reexamine and reevaluate the multitude of interpretations that can be drawn from seemingly innocent actions and word choices. Debi Marcucci returns to the Walnut to direct OLEANNA. Previously, Marcucci directed last season’s Tell Me on a Sunday and Souvenir; the hit musical Always… Patsy Cline; as well as Lobby Hero, Mr. Baily’s Minder and The Ugly One, all in Walnut’s Studio on 3. Her credits also include No Way To Treat A Lady at the Alpine Theatre Project and Assistant Director for Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story and Good People at the Walnut. Formerly a resident of South Philadelphia, Marcucci held the position of Stage Manager for the Walnut’s Mainstage for 18 years during her career. Playing the role of the tenure-seeking professor, John, is Johnnie Hobbs, Jr. Johnnie has been seen in the Walnut’s Independence Studio on 3 in The Other Place (2016) and Driving Miss Daisy (2014). He is currently an Emeritus Associate Professor at the Ira Bring School of Theatre Arts. In 2015, he won the Barrymore Lifetime Achievement Award for his impact both on stage and in the classroom. As an actor, Johnnie has performed at most of Philadelphia major local theaters, including Philadelphia Theatre Company, the Arden, 1812 Productions, the Freedom Theatre, and the Philadelphia Drama Guild. He is a four time Barrymore nominee. The struggling college student Carol will be played by Jessica Johnson. A former Walnut Street Acting apprentice, Jessica most recently performed as Celie in Theatre Horizon’s regional premiere of The Color Purple. Last season, she played Victoria in the Walnut’s Independence Studio on 3’s production of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. Outside of the Walnut, she has performed with Quintessence Theatre Group, Arden Theatre Company, and New Paradise Laboratories. OLEANNA will take on even more resonance as it will be performed in the Walnut’s intimate Independence Studio on 3, where the audience will be just a few feet from the action. Transforming the Independence Studio on 3 into the unassuming yet explosive office of Professor John is Set Designer Roman Tartarowicz (In Between, Tell Me On A Sunday, The Humans). The costumes, reflecting the shift of power throughout the show, will be designed by Rebecca Dwight (It’s A Wonderful Life). The sound will be designed by Damien Figueras (It’s a Wonderful Life). They persuade fellow WI members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar in John’s memory and raise money for Leukemia research. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small English village of Knapeley, where hilarity ensues. The calendar was launched in 1999, the aim had been to raise five thousand pounds, as of 2107, they have raised five million pounds. Their act of love and courage has touched and changed the lives of millions of people, who have gone through their own grief from this devastating disease. Third-graders sell toys during the annual Third Grade Toy Sale at The Haverford School. The students collected $949.84 for the PALM Senior Center as part of their December service project.
A first grader reads his letter, written to a member of the military serving in Afghanistan, to Jini Loos, Director of Service Learning at The Haverford School. Boys of all ages wrote letters to service members as part of a service project during the month of December.
oys at The Haverford School performed a variety of service projects throughout the month of December. The service projects support many area organizations, including local military members serving overseas, Life Centers of Delaware County, Project HOME, Toys for Tots, the PALM Senior Center, and Eldernet. The winter service projects are part of Haverford’s Service Learning Program, and led by students of all ages. This is the 15th year Haverford students have participated in winter service projects to aid others. “During the holiday season, there are so many with unmet needs in our area,” said Jini Loos, Director of Service Learning. “The winter service projects allow our boys to forge greater relationships in the community, and instill a sense of responsibility in helping others.” Students of all ages participated in a variety of service projects, including: • Writing letters to military service members: More than 100 letters and cards were collected, and will be distributed between Christmas and New Year to service members stationed in Afghanistan. The notes included wishes for a safe return home, and thanks for service members’ commitment to freedom. • Gathering cold weather clothing: Dozens of coats, scarves, hats, and gloves were collected and will be distributed to Project HOME, an organization that supports the poverty-stricken or homeless, and the Life Centers of Delaware County, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Upper Darby. • Collecting toys for the Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive: Between Dec. 3-13, Haverford students collected new, unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive. Students and families donated more than 200 toys, which were distributed to children in need at Christmas. • Third grade toy sale for the PALM Senior Center: Students in the third grade held their annual toy sale on Dec. 18. Gently used books, toys, and games were available for Haverford students, faculty, and staff to purchase. The sale raised $949.84, and that money was donated to the PALM Senior Center in Ardmore. • Lacrosse team partners with Eldernet: Members of the Haverford lacrosse program packed bags for elderly citizens living alone at Ardmore House. The players delivered the bags on Friday, Dec. 21. While the holidays are an important time to give back to the community, The Haverford School is committed to supporting those in need throughout the year through the use of the Service Learning method, which connects classroom lessons with valuable community service initiatives.

The first is its distinguished Faculty Concert on Saturday, February 2, at 7 p.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Bryn Mawr. This concert is highlyanticipated by both students at the Nelly Berman School of Music as well as the Main Line community due to the internationally-renowned musicians performing. The fundraising effort for the scholarship program will continue on Saturday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m., with the Jade Anniversary Gala Concert and Auction in celebration of 35 years of Musical Excellence at the Nelly Berman School of Music. This Gala will take place in a private home on Merion Square Road in Gladwyne. Paul Arnold, violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and a special faculty member at the Nelly Berman School will be performing together with Marianna Prjevalskaya, faculty member and internationally-acclaimed pianist, for this exciting event. A number of NBS award-winning students will be playing background music as the attendees have a chance to bid on some enticing items and support the prestigious gifted student scholarship program. Nelly Berman School wants to congratulate some of the members of its gifted student program. Isabella, 11 years old, performed two hours of repertoire as a soloist on both piano and violin for a private event at the White House. much memorized repertoire for a concert requires a lot of grit from Isabella and months – if not years – of work. When learning Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite for the White House concert, she watched three versions of the ballet by the Bolshoi, Marinski and the City Ballet companies. This work paid off, as her parents reported that guests at the event were so moved by Isabella’s playing that they began to sing along. Isabella was also selected to perform next year on the NPR showcase music program “From the Top” with Christopher O’Riley. She takes 3 hours of piano lessons and 2 hours of violin lessons a week. In the past month, several other Nelly Berman School of Music students have made NBS history. Winning the Pennsylvania State MTNA competition was 13-year-old pianist Alyssa, who was chosen to represent the state of Pennsylvania in the Junior Division. Andy, a 15year-old NBS pianist will represent the Senior Division, and won 2nd prize at the Garcia International Piano Competition at Pennsylvania State University. The winners, alternates, and honorable mentions students chosen in both divisions by the Music Teachers’ National Association representing the state of Pennsylvania all hail from the Nelly Berman School of Music. All proceeds from the Faculty Concert on February 2 and the Gala on March 23 go towards the Nelly Berman Classical Music Institute (NBSCMI) a (501)(C)(3) nonprofit, which supports hard-working and deserving students in their serious music studies who may not otherwise be able to afford the lessons they need.
