The concert is being held on Saturday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. During her Master Class, Tak will listen to Immaculata Music students perform on the piano and will offer comments and suggestions to enhance their performance. Miggy and her late husband, Paul Krentel, also had a daughter, Martha, who died as an infant. Subsequently, given their loving relationship with Martha, they decided to have a sixth child, Melissa, who was born with Down Syndrome in 1963. At that time, doctors and professionals

Sean Montgomery works in a variety of media, from printmaking and sculpture, to pastel and charcoal, that complement the various topics he addresses. His first-hand experiences volunteering on behalf of the homeless or otherwise marginalized in the U.S. and abroad inform his work with a commentary on social injustice. In “Free,” the sculpted hands appear to be reaching upwards toward liberation but do so through a lacerating spiral of barbed wire. The ceramic and mixed media work evokes the idea of institutionalized imprisonment as well as the constraints of the day to day. The reaching hands suggest freedom for the individual, though not without the sacrifice that comes with transgression beyond the social norm. The movement of the right hand seems to be reaching one moment and curling in defeat the next. In Montgomery’s ceramic and acrylic sculpture, “Busted,” a half torso is both caught and broken. An armless hand presses into the face of the subject, but to whom this hand belongs can be questioned. Is this the individual’s hand obscuring his own face, overcome by grief at having been named criminal and “busted,” or the strong hand of an oppressor forcing the subject’s face away and into submission? The neutral, almost institutional coloring of these pieces suggests a fate not relegated to a social class, a Serving Suburbs and City specific “race” or ethnicity. He notes that the practice of meditation has run parallel with his photography and that both allow him to explore his thoughts, feelings and circumstances. Twist’s black and white photograph, “Winter 2,” captures a web of bare tree branches and combines the intensity of a Jackson Pollock “drip” painting with the meditative quality of its dormant subject. Twist’s art is largely self-taught but he cites photographers Gordon Parks, James Vanderzee, Henri CartierBresson and Minor White as sources of inspiration. The artist remarks, “I personally develop all of my photographs and print [them] by hand onto archival paper.” He will donate 15% of his sales from this show to Philabundance, the Delaware Valley food bank. The Manayunk-Roxborough Art Center is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation that functions through the work of volunteers. In addition to monthly art exhibitions and art classes for adults and children, MRAC’s Humanities division offers literary events that include poetry readings, workshops, and programs on famous writers with Philadelphia connections like Walt Whitman and Edgar Allen Poe. On Sunday, February 10, 2013, from 3 to 5 p.m., MRAC will host Philadelphia Poets’ annual “Ethnic Voices” reading, featuring the magazine’s contributors. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 7, from 4 to 7 p.m.; Elliot Ratzman, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of religion at Swarthmore College, will speak at 4:30 p.m. The works on display include photographs, drawings, and prints by Russian, European, and American artists such as Raphael Soyer, Philip Cheney, Herb Fichter, Karl Schrag, and Isaac Freidlander, and by notable Philadelphia artists Joseph Hirsch and Jack Bookbinder. The exhibit at Cabrini is Part II of “The Jewish Vision of Sigmund R. Balka;� Part I runs concurrently at Rosemont College. Balka was influenced by art at an early age by his mother, and has acquired a vast and impressive collection over the past 50 years. He has dedicated much time, energy and devotion to the arts, serving on the boards of and working closely with the Queens Museum of Art, the Advisory Council

G ET R EADY FORVALENTINE’SD AY Lower Merion High School Presents “Alice in Wonderland” his classic story from your childhood takes on a dark (but very family friendly!) remake by the Lower Merion High School Players. “Alice in Wonderland” follows the story of young Alice, played by Senior Sophie Koorhan, who wanders through her looking glass and into a magical world filled with bizarre, arbitrary, and often infuriating characters.

Fundraiser Started in 1993 Has Raised Almost Half a Million Dollars he Drexel University College of Medicine community will be celebrating the 20th annual Pediatric AIDS Benefit Concert (PABC) on February 16, 2013. The proceeds of this student-run event support the Pediatric AIDS program at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. The event will be held at the Main Building on Drexel University’s main campus on 32nd and Chestnut Streets. The event – which has raised $455,000 since its beginning – benefits the Dorothy Mann Center for Pediatric and Adolescent HIV at St. Christopher’s. The center is the largest of its kind in the tri-state area, providing comprehensive care, including social services, to children infected with HIV and their families. The money raised by PABC helps pay for the services of a child-life specialist and a dietitian for the program, offers the children the opportunity to attend summer camp and helps provide the affected families with emergency funds for housing and other expenses. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6:00 p.m. Advanced tickets cost $20 for students and $30 for non-students; the price at the door will be $25 for students and $35 for non-students. The evening will include entertainment provided by College of Medicine students and faculty, a wide variety of food donated by local restaurants and other fundraising opportunities. St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children is a teaching affiliate of Drexel University College of Medicine. Eastern Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society Honors Peter Stein, M.D. ecently, Peter Stein, M.D., Crozer-Chester Medical Center geriatrician, was honored with The Eastern Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society’s (EPGS) Barbara Bell, M.D. Award. The dinner and award ceremony took place on Dec. 10, 2012 at the Union League of Philadelphia. Mayor Michael Nutter was in attendance as the keynote speaker. The Barbara Bell, M.D. Award was developed by the Board of the EPGS to honor the memory of Dr. Bell. This award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to geriatric care and education, and whose principles and practices emulate the humanistic qualities that Dr. Bell brought to every patient she encountered. The practice of geriatrics specializes in health promotion, disease prevention and treatment in the elderly. “I feel profoundly honored by the recognition of my peers. The practice of geriatrics in this day and age can provide immense personal and professional satisfaction,” Stein says. Medicare 101—The Basics

O’Connor, Regional Administrator, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Region 3 eople often confuse Medicare with Medicaid—two programs which sound very much alike, and which often serve the same people, but are different. So what is Medicare? Medicare is health insurance for people age 65 and older, and for people under age 65 with certain disabilities or health conditions. In short, eligibility for Medicare is based on age, and/or certain health conditions. Medicaid helps pay medical costs for persons of any age who have limited income and resources. Medicaid is funded jointly by the federal and state governments, but is administered by the state, which determines eligibility based on the income and resources limits it sets. A person who is eligible for Medicare may also be eligible for Medicaid, based on income. Medicare has four main parts, Parts A, B, C and D. Each part covers specific services and benefits, or provides different options for coverage. Here is a brief summary of the Medicare “alphabet soup”: • Part A (Hospital Insurance) – helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice and home health care. • Part B (Medical Insurance) – helps cover services from doctors and other providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment and some preventive services. • Par t C (Medicare Advantage) – run by Medicareapproved private insurers, and includes all benefits and services covered under Parts A and B, and usually Part D; may include extra benefits at additional cost. • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) – run by Medicare-approved private insurers and helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. As with most health insurance, there are monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments or co-insurance associated with Medicare. Medicare Part A is premium-free if you have worked and paid taxes for at least 40 quarters (the equivalent of 10 years), but you are responsible for meeting an annual deductible, $1,184 in 2013, and paying coinsurance for Medicare-covered care. For Part B, the month-

The vision she saw for her daughter was innovative in its day and has helped reshape how people with disabilities are regarded and treated around the world. I have been honored to continue building upon their dream.” Today, Melmark serves over a thousand children and adults from across the United States. The individuals served at Melmark present with a wide range of disabilities, including autism, intellectual disabilities, brain injuries and other neurological and genetic disorders. In Berwyn, PA, its headquarters, Melmark operates an Approved Private School and a broad scope of adult programs with residential homes on its campus and in surrounding communities. In 2004 Melmark New England, an Approved Private School, with local community residences, was established and is now located in Andover Massachusetts. Recently, it has begun serving adults, as well. Miggy was a longstanding member of Melmark’s Board of
Directors, and she played many roles in Melmark’s history. She co-founded the Melmark Service League, a volunteer group with original members who still serve today. She also founded The Joybells, Melmark’s bell choir that has performed at The White House and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion. She produced the first Christmas play at Melmark and also once led the charge in admissions, fundraising and marketing. At the age of 76, she went to Zambia, Africa as a missionary, where she worked with children in need. As if being a nurturing parent and founding Melmark were not enough, Miggy was also an accomplished author, penning children’s stories as well as books about her personal life experiences. She even maintained a blog titled, “Miggy Moments,” where her writing style showed her spunk, determination and her love for God. It is that love that guided her in all that she did at Melmark. A memorial service at Melmark is being planned for Mrs. Krentel. Information will be announced on Melmark’s website, www.melmark.org.

Region VI is comprised of high-caliber student musicians from Philadelphia, Delaware, Chester, Bucks, Berks, and Montgomery counties. “This is an unprecedented showing for EA, as our students will make up a quarter of the entire cello section at the Regional Festival,” says Katie Bechtold, Director of Orchestras at The Episcopal Academy. Based on re-auditions that will be held at next month’s Regional Festival, the three EA cellists each have an opportunity to advance to the State, Eastern and National Festivals. C ANCER S UPPORT C OMMUNITY OF P HILADELPHIA’ S “I N FASHION !” he 10th annual “In Fashion!” luncheon and fashion show featured designer Ippolita and her Fall/Winter 2012 Collection took place at Neiman Marcus at King of Prussia Plaza on Wednesday, November 14, 2012. This was the fourth year that Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia (CSCP) utilized models who were cancer survivors. After a bit of time for guests to mingle as Neiman Marcus presented “The Art of Fashion,” CSCP’s cancer survivor models worked the runway wearing designer fashions and Ippolita jewelry as their personal stories were presented by hard working event co-chairs Pam Cancer survivor model Berkman and Pia Halloran. Jeanne Egan. Guests were then invited to lunch at Zodiac at Neiman Marcus. Ippolita spoke about her collection and her connection to CSCP’s mission (a friend had just been diagnosed with cancer). Approximately 100 guests enjoyed lunch and bid on silent auction items and purchased raffle tickets for some great donated items like Cancer survivor model a Tory Burch jacket, a Prada Karen Gagnier. purse and much more. Over $24,000 was raised by this year’s “In Fashion!” thanks to the dedicated committee led by Tisa Baena, the event co-chairs, and the generosity of Ippolita. Over the last 10 “In Fashion!” luncheons, over $443,000 has been raised to support people impacted by cancer at CSCP.

Main Line Art Center Presents 2nd Annual Professional Artists’ Exhibition

ain Line Art Center is proud to present its second annual “Professional Artists’ Exhibition,� on view February 12 to March 12, 2013. The exhibition will feature 2- and 3-D works by 58 of the region’s most talented artists. The Art Center will host a free public reception on Friday, February 15 from 5 - 8 p.m. where the community can meet the artists and purchase unique works of art. The reception will open with the State of the Art Center Happy Hour from 5 - 5:30 p.m., where Executive Director Amie Potsic will share Shown is Delainey Barclay’s “Process,� Life Magazine from exciting details about “ART 1964-1972. 75: Access. Renew. Transform,� the Art Center’s campaign to raise $1.5 million to renovate its building in the summer. The Professional Artist Program was developed two years ago to support the careers of artists by providing exhibition opportunities, visibility and advanced career development opportunities. Through a competitive process assessing each artist’s educational background, exhibition participation and gallery experience, 58 diverse artists were selected, including painters, photographers, sculptors, mixed media artists and more. Though their styles, media, and backgrounds vary, they share a commitment to their work and support for Main Line Art Center and its mission of ‘Art for Everyone.’ The gallery at Main Line Art Center is free and open to the public Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art Center is located at 746 Panmure Road in Haverford and offers plenty of free parking.
