The Philly POPS® Presents the Philadelphia Premiere of “The Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel” Starring Nationally Acclaimed AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle (Natives of Bethlehem, PA) – February 7, 8 and 9, 2014 he audiences in the next Philly POPS concert series will certainly be “feeling groovy” as music director Michael Krajewski introduces Philadelphians to a concert he helped develop – “The Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel.” After singing with symphonies throughout the country, AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle, who hail from Bethlehem, PA, will perform such favorites as “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “The Sound of Silence,” “The Boxer,” “Mrs. Robinson”, “Feeling Groovy” and “Scarborough Fair.” Taking place Friday, February 7 (8 p.m.), Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9 (3 p.m.) in Verizon Hall at The Kimmel Center, the acclaimed national touring duo are thrilled to present their Philadelphia premiere of “The Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel” with The Philly POPS. Included in the prestigious list of orchestras with whom they have performed are Houston, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Naples, San Antonio, Cleveland, Grand Rapids and Wichita, but according to Beedle, “There’s nothing like playing on our home turf.” Swearingen agrees wholeheartedly sharing his enthusiasm for playing in Philadelphia and at The Kimmel Center. “What could be better?” Simon and Garfunkel mastered the folk rock genre and captured hearts with their touching lyrics and intricate harmonies. Writing the score for “The Graduate” launched their careers into international stardom, making their music legendary for generations of fans. The acclaimed national touring duo of AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle bring their heartfelt interpretations of Simon and Garfunkel to The Philly POPS. They started as a duo performing in clubs in Bethlehem, PA and then opened this act at the acclaimed Odette’s Cabaret in New Hope. According to Bob Egan, founder and producer of Odette’s who also booked them in New York, this show is a “must see,” and he couldn’t be more delighted that they are now playing with The Philly POPS. The journey from New Hope to concert stages is an interesting one, thanks to Philly POPS music director, Maestro Krajewski. He explains it this way, “When I first saw video of AJ and Jonathan performing songs of Simon and Garfunkel, I immediately realized the potential of adding orchestral accompaniment and creating a symphonic pops program around them. This music is perfect for today’s Pops audience because it now holds a permanent place in the American songbook and is revered by several generations of listeners.” He continued, “I went to see AJ and Jonathan perform live and was struck by how rapt the audience was by their performance and how moved people were by the experience of reliving these iconic songs. The program was more than a year in the making. Many orchestrations were created by several arrangers. In addition to accompaniments for the songs, an overture was composed and a medley of Paul Simon’s solo songs was written.” For Swearingen and Beedle it was totally overwhelming to imagine their show performed on a symphonic level. Beedle admits how it felt when they were first approached. “Honestly, we didn’t believe it at first. Here we are singing as a duo and Michael tells us his plans for him to present our music with orchestras. Merion Concert Band to Present Winter Concert

The

he Merion Concert Band presents its winter concert “Dancing Through Life” on Sunday, January 26 at 3 p.m. at Harriton High School in Bryn Mawr. The concert features worldrenowned tuba soloist and River City Brass conductor James Gourlay as he dances through Martin Ellerby’s Tuba Concerto and then takes you to Hungary to dance the traditional folk dance Czardas. The band will have you moving with Dance of the Jesters and the cool sounds of Bernstein’s Four Dances from West Side Story. Other selections on the program include Clarinet Polka, The Waltzing Cat, The Walking Frog, and a Shepherd’s Hey. The final piece is Strauss’s famous Thunder and Lightning Polka, a traditional encore on the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day concert. Mr. Gourlay was born in Scotland and began playing in his school brass band at the age of ten. Being tallest in class, he was serendipitously given the tuba, an instrument he loves and continues to promote all over the world. At age eighteen, after a short time at the Royal College of Music, Mr. Gourlay became Principal Tuba of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra then took up that same position four years later at the BBC Symphony Orchestra where he remained for ten years before playing for the Orchestra of the Zürich Opera for the next decade. He has toured the world with the Philip Jones and English Brass Ensembles and has recorded five solo CDs, the latest, British Tuba Concertos, recorded for the Naxos label with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, received international critical acclaim. After Mr. Gourlay’s concerto performance in Manchester, “He was absolutely delightful in speaking to the audience and his playing is world-class great.” As for playing with him on this concert, Mr. Tollen said “I have no doubt it will be fun.” The January 26 concert is free and open to the public. The 13 and 14 year olds boys combined four solutions (dextrose, silver nitrate, ammonium nitrate and sodium hydroxide) in a glass ornament ball and swirled it around. In an earlier class the eighth graders also made crystal ornaments in various holiday shapes with pipe cleaners and a solution of water and borax. Media Theatre Offers “Fiddler On The Roof” Summer Youth Camp he Media Theatre brings “Tradition” to Summer Camp with the Summer Youth Project Musical, “Fiddler On The Roof.” This will be the first summer musical at The Media Theatre that is not specifically for teens who have an interest in performing on a professional music theatre stage. It’s for ages 8 and up, who may enjoy the experience of performing this legendary musical. This fun camp will meet starting June 16 with three weeks of rehearsal, while performances begin July 10. The musical will perform for the public through August 10, four times each weekend. The “Fiddler” Campers will work directly with Media Music Theatre Company Artistic Director Jesse Cline, plus professional designers and choreographers. The entire camp gives them insight as to what it is like being in a professional production. It’s also an educational opportunity in which young people will learn more about this time in history, simply by being involved in the process. Montgomery County Community College’s Blue Bell Campus Becomes a Global Game Jam Site Jan. 24-26 E

nvision a weekend when the imaginative minds of programmers and gaming enthusiasts from all over the world can connect and collaborate for 48 hours without distractions to develop new video and non-digital games. This opportunity – the annual Global Game Jam – will happen January 24 - 26 at various sites around the world. For the first time, Montgomery County Community College’s Central Campus, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, will participate as a host site for the Global Game Jam (GGJ). The event is free and open to anyone, 18 years and older, who can commit to a weekend of innovative gaming fun. Pre-event registration is required by visiting http://globalgamejam.org/2014/jamsites/montgomery-county-community-college. As part of the event, MCCC will be promoting the event along with the Philadelphia Chapter of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), a non-profit organization serving individuals that create video games. IGDA will have two other host sites—Drexel University, Phila., and Camden County College, Blackwood, N.J. The goal of this annual event, which started in 2009, is for participants to work together to create a video game or non-digital game, such as a board or card game, within a 48-hour time frame. The short time span is meant to spur creative thinking that will result in innovative and experimental games. At the start of the event, a theme is announced, and throughout the process, participants work together with developers from around the world to create new games. According to GGJ’s website, in 2013 more than 16,700 participants logged in excess of 700,000 hours at 300 sites in 63 countries and created more than 3,000 games. This year, GGJ is anticipating more than 17,000 participants. Many games developed in previous Game Jams, according to GGJ’s website, have become fully realized games, and all projects are protected under a Creative Commons license.

Not only must he cope with the Tsar evicting Jews from their village, but also the willful actions of his three older daughters whose choice of husbands moves them farther away from the traditional customs of his faith. With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joseph Stein, this musical is rich in historic and ethnic detail. Its universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences touched by its humor, warmth and honesty. he Maguire Foundation has agreed to contribute $400,000 to Neumann University to establish a scholarship fund to support students during the next seven years. The Maguire Scholars Program will provide a total of up to $25,000 per year to assist as many as five qualified students through four years of study, beginning with freshmen who entered in the fall of 2013. The program will also provide four-year aid to additional students who enroll at Neumann through the fall of 2016. These scholarships will be awarded by the University, based on the financial need of the students. One stipulation of the Foundation is that each Maguire Scholar is expected to pay during each school year (or borrow from other sources) at least $5,000 for tuition or other education-related expenses with the expectation that any amount borrowed will be repaid from subsequent employment. To be selected, students must come from a list of eligible high schools and have at least a 3.0 high school GPA. To be eligible for continuation of this scholarship funding from year to year, the recipient must be in good academic standing, participate in school or community volunteer/ extra-curricular activities, and receive a recommendation from the University for continued funding. “This extraordinary gift from the Maguire Foundation will enable as many as 20 students to achieve their dream of attaining a university education and preparation for a professional career,” said Dr. Rosalie Mirenda, president of Neumann University. “We are extremely grateful for the generosity and philanthropic spirit of the Maguire family.” The Maguire Foundation was established in 2000. Mr. and Mrs. James J. Maguire are coprincipals of the Foundation, a philanthropic enterprise that focuses its resources primarily on education. With raves from reviewers and music industry experts, Johan van Deeg wrote in Jazz in Europe, “The Jōst Project is without a doubt one of the most creative bands I have heard for years and vocalist Paul Jōst one of the best male jazz vocalists since Mark Murphy.” Michael Barbiero, record producer/engineer for The Allman Brothers, Joe Cocker, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Whitney Houston and many more, said, “You nailed it totally. This has me positively speechless.” The Jōst Project is also honored that two selections from Can’t Find My Way Home have been included in BFM Jazz Digital’s new compilation CD called “Experience This: Reinterpreted Rock Classics.” They are “Kashmir” and “Can’t Find My Way Home.” Phyllis Chapell has spent her life developing a universal musical style, singing “world songs.” Her repertoire includes songs in 13 languages from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as well as American folk, jazz and popular music. Tyler Arboretum “Stacks” Up Penn State Brandywine Hosts Battlefield Speaker The Fun with Pancakes and P Maple Syrup Annual Pancake Breakfast and Maple Sugaring Celebration to be held February 22 undle up and enjoy this annual celebration of the maple tree’s sweet offerings by attending Tyler Arboretum’s annual Pancake Breakfast and Maple Sugaring Celebration from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. Visitors are invited to join one of the ongoing tours at Tyler to discover how sap is turned into syrup, and then take a turn tapping a tree. After, appetites are satisfied in the historic Barn with Tyler’s famous all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast. Hot coffee and cocoa accompany this delicious wintertime feast. “What makes our event unique is that attendees get an opportunity to tap a maple tree first-hand and learn how maple syrup is made,” said Executive Director Rick Colbert. “It’s just another way for Tyler to demonstrate how dependent people are on nature for even the smallest of conveniences—and this learning opportunity happens to come with a hot and delicious breakfast!” No pre-registration is required for this event. Adults $12, children (ages 3-12) $6, and children under age three are free. All proceeds benefit Tyler Arboretum. Because this is a fundraiser, no free passes are allowed for this event. The snow date for the Pancake Breakfast and Maple Sugaring Celebration is March 1, 2014. Tyler Arboretum, one of the oldest and largest arboreta in the northeastern United States, is an important community resource and cultural destination. Tyler provides a natural sanctuary for visitors interested in horticulture, history and the natural world. Its 650 acres of meadows, wetlands and unbroken forest can be enjoyed via over 17 miles of hiking trails. Additional information is available at www.tylerarboretum.org.

“A RMS & T HE M AN ” AT T HE P LAYERS C LUB OF S WARTHMORE Continued from front page

It is a chilly night in November and the Petkoff women can hear the battle getting closer. Raina loves the dashing Sergius (a soldier in the Bulgarian army) and romanticizes war. Shaw describes her as “…a young lady, intensely conscious of the romantic beauty of the night, and of the fact that her own youth and beauty are part of it…” Shortly after her mother leaves her for the night, a mercenary soldier in the retreating enemy army bursts through her bedroom window as he is running from the Bulgarian army. Captain Bluntschli first threatens her, and then begs her to hide him. Raina complies, though she thinks the man a coward, especially when he tells her that he carries chocolate crèmes instead of cartridges. He escapes in her father’s coat, but later comes gallantly back to return it. As Raina labors to keep the lid on the resulting interplay among Bluntschli, Sergius, and the Petkoffs, she learns some things about love and war. Shaw is considered one of the greatest playwrights in the English language. He used his wit to satirize a range of societal issues beyond war, including education, marriage, religion, government, health care and class privilege. As a result, much of his work still has relevance today. But this script has not been seen on the Players Club stage since 1956! PCS veteran director Paul Kerrigan (Glenolden) cast Hannah Sisk (Wallingford) to take on the role of Raina Petkoff; Gil Johnson (Philadelphia) plays opposite her as Captain Bluntschli. Josiah Donnell (Boothwyn) appears as Serguis Saranoff, with Laura Christman (Allentown) as the sassy servant girl Louka, and R. Bruce Stewart (Swarthmore) as the loyal houseman Nicola. Playing Raina’s parents, Catherine Petkoff and Major Petkoff, are Tatyana Duke (Philadelphia) and John Harvey (Swarthmore). Rounding out the ensemble is Thomas Wilcox (Malvern) as the Russian Officer. Performances began on Friday, January 10; Thursday performances are at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 20 p.m. Group rates are available—consult the theater’s website for more information. Reservations can be made either online at www.pcstheater.org or by calling “Theater Mania” customer service toll-free at 866-811-4111. The Players Club’s Mainstage space is a fully handicappedaccessible, 300-seat proscenium theater with plenty of free parking in the club’s adjacent lot. The Mainstage is equipped with Assisted Listening devices and also offers a separate handicapped restroom facility. For more information about PCS – including upcoming events, shows, ticketing and directions, visit www.pcstheater.org. THANKS FOR READING CITY SUBURBAN NEWS EVERY WEEK!
