“Paula Poundstone is not only a brilliant and hilarious voice, but also a fantastic name added to the Kimmel Center’s comedy season,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We strive to deliver diverse programming to our Philadelphia community, and are thrilled to host Poundstone’s debut performance on our Cultural Campus.” Poundstone can be heard regularly on NPR’s #1 show, the weekly comedy news quiz Wait, Wait... Don’t Tell Me! When asked about Paula, Wait, Wait host Peter Sagal replied, “Paula Poundstone is the funniest human being I have ever known. Everything she does, thinks, or says is hilarious. She is made of funny. If you chopped her into bits, each piece would be hilarious. (But don’t.) Air becomes funny having been breathed by her.” A star of several HBO specials and her own series on ABC and HBO, Poundstone voiced the character “Forgetter Paula” in the Academy Award-winning feature film Inside Out. Anthony Lawton, Paul L. Nolan, Mary Lee Bednarek, and Dan Hodge in Lantern Theater Company’s world premiere production of “The Craftsman,” written by Bruce Graham and directed by M. Craig Getting, now through December 17, 2017. From the ashes of World War II, Dutch patriots discover that one of their own – a rich and reputable art dealer – has sold rare Vermeer paintings to the Nazis. Accused of treason and on trial for his life, he must decide whether to destroy his own reputation or to reveal bigger secrets behind these works that the Dutch consider national treasures. Commissioned and developed through the Lantern’s New Works Initiative, this world premiere by celebrated Philadelphia playwright Bruce Graham spins a darkly ironic tale of ambition, genius, and deception. Tickets are $12 for children, $14 for adults with school and group discounts available. For reservations and information: 215-659-8550 or www.storybookmusical.org. Adapted from the original Charles Perrault story by Storybook’s Artistic Director, Patricia Goldberg, with original music by Kevin Arruda, this delightful tale puts the fate of a sleeping beauty, and her entire kingdom, into the hands of a brave, young prince. “Sleeping Beauty” opens with a woodsman, in an enchanted forest, telling Prince Bryon about a hundred-years’ curse that was cast upon the kingdom by an evil fairy after the young princess, Briar Rose, pricked her finger on a spinning wheel’s thimble. Only the prince is brave and romantic enough to break the spell but he faces many thorny obstacles that stand in his way. Storybook has gathered seven, talented, local professional actors for its cast: In the role of the valiant Prince Bryon is Storybook newcomer Chris Monaco, of Wallingford. The sleeping beauty, Briar Rose is played by Erica Cochran of Philadelphia. Erica was seen last season in Storybook’s in “Puss ’n Boots.” Topher Layton, of Philadelphia, fills the role of the mysterious woodsman. Layton is also new to Storybook. Jeff Reim, of Sewell, NJ, a Storybook veteran, takes on the role of the King. The Queen is played by Christine Petrini, of Burlington, NJ, also making her Storybook debut. The good fairy, Joycelyn, who tries to break the evil spell, is played by Storybook favorite, Aileen Goldberg, of Upper Darby. And, of course, the best is last. Evileen, the wicked fairy, who casts the hundred years spell, is played by newcomer, Vanessa Sterling, of Philadelphia. The director of “Sleeping Beauty” is Patricia Goldberg. Musical Director is Nancy Wiker, with costumes by Kim Hanley, sets by Pat Goldberg and lighting by Marc S. Goldberg. Showtimes for “Sleeping Beauty” vary according to date. Reservations are recommended. Children’s tickets: $12, Adults: $14 with generous school and group discounts. Storybook productions are appropriate for children age three and older. After each performance children have the opportunity to meet the actors for a handshake, picture or autograph. For information, reservations or directions call: 215-659-8550 or www.storybookmusical.org.

Religion can be quite powerful. “I survived,” says Kelly McCaughan, “Catholic Guilt” writer and performer. See performanaces December 14 - 16. Photo/Hannah Van Sciver stand-up, voice overs, projections, music, and your sinful audience participation, while taking a look at the power of religion and what it can do to one’s psyche. See performances: December 14 at 8:30 p.m.; December 15 at 8 p.m.; and December 16 at 8 p.m. This production is written and performed by Kelly McCaughan, directed by Carly L. Bodnar and technical direction by James Jackson. Catholic Guilt runs in West Philadelphia at the Calvary Center for Culture and Community (801 S. 48th St., Philadelphia, PA 19143). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at https://catholicguiltphilly.brownpapertickets.com/. Catholic Guilt was first written to take a look at religion and its effect on the psyche. Religion can bring people together, and bring peace and meaning to life. It is often a huge part of one’s identity. But what about the dark side of it? It can be polarizing, creating a sense of “us vs. them.” Religion often drives people to act out of fear. People infused with religious dogma can become neurotic because of the fear of not being able to fulfill their religion’s expectations. Kelly explores these ideas through the telling of her own personal experience. About the creator: Kelly McCaughan is an actress, deviser, improviser, and writer in Philadelphia. She graduated with a BFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been working in Philadelphia for 7 years. She has worked with local theater companies such as EgoPo Classic Theater, Revolution Shakespeare, Luna Theater Company, Manayunk Theater company, White Pines Productions, Philly PHIT, Walking Fish Theater, The Cabaret Administration, and Plays and Players. She was a previous ensemble member of Bright Invention with White Pines Productions and of Bye Bye Liver: The Philadelphia Drinking Play with Happy Hour Live. She served as a writer and actor for her award-winning sketch comedy group, High Dramma, and still collaborates with them from time to time. Outside of Philadelphia, Kelly has worked in NYC (People’s Improv Theater), Pittsburgh (Arcade Comedy Club), Montreal (Theatre Sainte Catherine), and Baltimore (Lou Costello Room). This past summer she co-starred in the HBO comedy Crashing, and most recently finished filming a supporting role in a feature film. Visit www.KellyMcCaughanActress.com.

Darlington Arts Center Hosts Holiday Arts Party December 9 arlington Arts Center in Garnet Valley invites the community to a free and festive Holiday Jam and Open House on Saturday, December 9. The entertaining afternoon and evening event begins at 2:30 p.m. with an Art Gallery Opening featuring the work of Philadelphia artist Lois Schlachter. Ms. Schlachter is a spontaneous painter. Her appealing abstract compositions are replete with a labyrinth of defined images and a conglomeration of forms enlivened with vibrant color. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and received her BFA at The Philadelphia College of Art. Lois has exhibited extensively throughout the Northeast. Her collection of paintings will be on display at Darlington through early January. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet the artist, view the work, and enjoy wine and cheese at the reception. “We are thrilled to invite the surrounding community to Darlington and demonstrate the value of the arts to our community,” says Darlington Arts Center Director Eric CarterDarlington Arts Center invites the community to a free Thompson. “We are committed to making available every art and festive Holiday Jam and Open House on Saturday, for everyone and this event is a prime example.” The holiDecember 9. The party quickly transitions to music with Darlington student recitals taking center stage at 3 p.m. Kicking this festive event up a notch is the holiday jam that immediately follows the student performances. The lively musical jam session is truly a fun time and offers opportunities for audience participation to join the musical merrymaking and collaborate in a memorable holiday spirited ensemble. This is the third annual holiday jam following the success of the previous events. Featuring participants of all ages, this eclectic display of musical talents and community camaraderie will be the perfect time and place to celebrate the holiday season. “Our Holiday Jam is a good time celebration and is certain to be a hit with everyone in attendance,” says Director CarterThompson. “We invite everyone to perform and join the festivities to usher in the holiday season.” Director Carter-Thompson also related that Darlington Arts Center just published their Winter/Spring catalog, so there are more great opportunities for engagement with the arts to keep the creative spirit flowing. For those willing to make it a full afternoon and night of engagement with the arts, DarlingPreschool • Religious ton is hosting its December Coffee House Concert at 7:30 p.m. This capstone event features Darlington Teaching Artists performing on a variety of instruments and styles of music. “Our Coffee House Concerts have become a welcome oasis of great entertainment in an intimate setting, says Darlington Director Carter-Thompson. “The performances are fantastic and the up-close engagement with the musicians makes for a special evening of satisfying music. “Do you see what I see” by Brown looks at the juxtaposition between bourgeois Black American Culture and its African counterparts. Judith Jamison (former artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), was so moved in seeing the work she invited Brown to create the powerful dance (Grace 1999) for Ailey. New Conversations: First Look is a deepening of a collaboration between Ronald K. Brown and Grammy award winning jazz composer Arturo O’ Farrill. In 2015, Brown and O’Farrill collaborated on the world premiere of Open Door for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater that explored the connections between African rooted arts in the New World. New Conversations is built on Ochosi – a Cuban Orissa in the Santeria religion that is a hunter and has both male and female appearances. It is set to music by Arturo O’Farill Afro Jazz Latin Ensemble. In Four Corners, Brown was inspired by friend and recording artist Carl Hancock Rux’s lyrics from “Lamentations.” The dance explores spiritual seekers amid four angels standing on four corners of the earth. Brown’s grounded movements portray figures who are burdened by grief but ultimately find solace, peace and freedom with the aid of the angels. Brown, who is also an avid storyteller and writer, expressed his love for poems. “There’s something about the rhythm and richness of the spoken word that goes right to my heart. When I am dreaming about movement, poetry comes out.” Four Corners was commissioned by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2013. Brown observes. “I am a spiritual person. My mother’s side of the family was Pentecostal. No dancing allowed. But I am also from several generations of family churches on my father’s side and down in North Carolina on visits, I was encouraged to dance.” In addition to the performances, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence will be offering two outreach activities – The Student Discovery Series program for schools, Friday, December 15 at 10:30 a.m. and a master class, Friday, December 15 at 1 p.m. at Philadanco, 9 N. Preston Street, Philadelphia, PA. There will also be two post-performance chats that will take place after Friday’s 8 p.m. and Saturday’s 2 p.m. performances.

Congregation Beth Or Art Exhibit Congregation Beth Or presents the featured artist for the month of December, Monique Sarkessian. The community is invited to meet the artist at her opening reception on Friday, December 8, from 6 to 6:30 p.m., immediately before Shabbat services. Refreshments will be served. Congregation Beth Or is located at 529 Welsh Road Maple Glen, PA 19002. Her exhibit will run through January 10. For info: Karen at 267-975-7555.
